The secret to cultivating a healthy relationship with money is how you feel about it – if money doesn’t bring you joy, you may unconsciously push it away.
That’s according to Japan’s bestselling author Ken Honda. Honda shows people how to create a life of abundance by changing their relationship with money. His book sales have surpassed seven million copies since 2001.
“Most people, whether they realize it or not, are already in a deeply committed, unhappy relationship with their money,” Honda says. “We are in a flow of either Happy Money or Unhappy Money. Depending on which flow you choose, your life and the outcomes in your life will vary …”
He shares his work with English-speaking readers in the United States and beyond. His latest book is called Happy Money: The Japanese Art of Making Peace With Your Money (June 4, 2019, Simon & Schuster).
Now he is kicking off his “Happy Money Hawaiian Tour” from October 29 to November 11, including an evening on Maui on Thursday, November 2 at the Makawao Union Church.
So what does Honda mean by “Happy Money?” Honda asserts that it is possible for anyone, no matter their current financial status, to live more easily in their relationship with money.
According to Honda: “All the money circulated with love, care, and friendship is Happy Money. Happy Money makes people smile and feel loved and cared for deeply.”
“It is in many ways an active form of love.
Money circulated in frustration, anger, sadness, and despair is Unhappy Money. This kind of money makes people stressed, desperate, aggravated, depressed, and sometimes violent. It deprives people of their dignity, self-esteem, and gentleness of heart. Whenever you receive and spend money, and you do so with negative energy, it becomes Unhappy Money,” he says.
“There is another way of living your life, especially around money,” says Honda. “Clear the fog of anxiety around financial issues. Worry is not good for your health, and you can be free from financial worries. When you feel more relaxed about money, you can trust your future
more. And if you start trusting your future more, you have a lot more fun.”
According to Honda: “People who live ‘in love’ with money are doing what they love and make enough money. They may not be rich, but they truly have everything they need. They put what they love in the center of their life. They are financially comfortable, so they don’t feel stress around money in everyday life.”
He said Hawaii is interesting because there are a lot of entrepreneurs and people working several jobs to make ends meet. He said this can sometimes cause unhappy money because it makes people jump from one gig to another instead of “finding what you love and appreciating and respecting who you are.”
Honda notes that confusion about what money is and what it means is often closely linked to a feeling.
“We may feel used, discarded, or taken advantage of. We feel like life is unfair. We feel unworthy and diminished. We feel that others have more than we do. A lot of these feelings result from the three functions of money: exchange, saving, and growth,” he says.
Additionally, he offers simple tips, including giving small gifts (to associates and friends), doing what you love, and making sure to “arigato” (thank) your money.

Here are some of my hints for gaining more energy, health and abundance! First, read John Gelert’s excellent suggestions on page 5.
1) Surround yourself with high vibrational people who love and support you. Eliminate or reduce your time spent with critical, negative people who constantly dredge up the past and bring you down. Remember, you are who you are now, not who you were then. If you encounter negative people at work that you cannot avoid, don’t interact or react. Put up your “psychic shield” and ignore them. Self-forgiveness is key for past mistakes, and attempt to practice forgiveness for others and their errors.
2) Change your diet to include healthy portions of vegetables every day. Reduce portions of foods that weigh you down.
3) Take organically sourced multivitamins with probiotics. Even if you don’t quite eat right, they will help boost your immunity, and nourish your micro biome. Where and how do you spend your energy? What saps your energy? How do you waste your energy? What do you do to conserve and replenish your energy?
With the current challenge of rapid change and upheaval, it’s more important than ever that we protect and nourish our Vital Energy.
We can’t afford not to because how we feel affects our clarity and abundance. An abundance and quality of energy is the real gift. That gift gives us the fuel we need in all our endeavors. Without clear energy, nothing works.
So how do we plug into an energy that replenishes us and gives us the most impact? Yoga, meditation, qi gong, dance, music, hiking, swimming, creative explorations of all kinds – the list goes on. The problem is that, unless you have made a pursuit your main thing, these “energy cultivators” are squished between jobs or work.
“Jobs” can take up a lot of our day. So, cultivate something useful to others, and that you genuinely enjoy doing. Endeavor to master some area of expertise so you grow your gift. And share it, even while cultivating it.
Your job is to do what lights you up and brings you joy.
Consistently sharing knowledge and wisdom feeds our collective and individual souls.
The mainstream narrative is only a thin slice of our reality. We must not be hypnotized or controlled by manufactured information. Raising our energy vibration gives us good health and higher energy. Positive things happen to us, and we interact more easily with people. We are inspired, creative, motivated, and laugh and smile easily.
When our vibration is low, we experience constant stress, tension, anxiety, depression, paranoia, and poor health. We tend to complain often and have negative relationships.
To increase the energy, start by moving our bodies to clear out the stagnant energy. Yoga can help, but aerobic exercises are best for this, and the endorphins can make us feel high.
Eat healthy high-vibrational foods, especially organic vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, and fermented foods! Dark chocolate is good! Cut back on low-vibration foods like sugar, soda, white flour, red meat, dairy products, and deep-fried foods.
It is especially important to avoid GMO corn, soy, canola, sugar, and cottonseed, which are contaminated with the poison Roundup, and so are wheat and oats. If we must eat these, they must be organic. Avoid artificial ingredients and processed food.
Positive thinking is essential. Be optimistic and speak positive affirmations! Talk with a friend about what is bothering you, so you can let go of the negative to be replaced by good. Always look for something good in what appears to be bad!
Meditation and breath work aid positive development and help us feel centered and grounded. They calm the body, boost immunity, and reduce stress. Take slow, deep breaths all the way in and all the way out for a few seconds each.
Practice self-love! Make time to be good to yourself and focus on what you need! Get plenty of sleep each day to keep your energy level high! When you love yourself, then you can love others.
Gratitude is essential to create the big things in life that you want. Feel gratitude in all things, and write them daily in a gratitude journal!

What do you feel when you read this: ‘We’re gonna die, and we don’t know when. Everyone and everything we love and care about will die, and we don’t know when. The world may be dying. How and whether we use this information will shape the course of our lives, our relationships, and our attunement to the sacred. It will shape who we are as a community and how we care for each other now and when we are dying.’
I’ve asked groups of people, ‘How many of you know you’re going to die and you don’t know when?’ Everyone raises their hands and looks at me with a ‘that’s a silly question, everyone knows that’ look. I don’t think that’s true. Everyone knows that other people die, they see that. But
when I look around, I rarely see people acting like they know they’re going to die, and they don’t know when. It’s just another piece of information in our heads, not something that has traveled deeper into understanding, realization and embodiment in a cellular way. It hasn’t become an actualized day-to-day truth that affects how most of us live, and that’s where it can transform our lives.
Why do you think that is? How do you distract, turn away and avoid thinking about your approaching death? Imagine that these are the very things keeping you from living a vital and awakened life. What if engaging in some preparation for your approaching death is the most powerful, spiritually transformational practice to shake you out of the default, cultural hypnotic sleepwalk we often find ourselves in? How ironic that preparing for your approaching death brings you into more aliveness than you’ve ever experienced!
Why do we hear that people often feel more fully alive sometime after they’ve been given a terminal diagnosis? Throughout the ages, people have asked these fundamental questions: “Why am I here? What is the relationship between me and the Divine?” Spiritual practice brings us to the understanding that we were birthed out of the intimate embrace between Consciousness and energy. That dynamic interchange, that intimacy of love, creates life; it is love doubling back on itself. Realization is living in that union in our own lives, with a heart wide open. To discover life’s true purpose and meaning, we must stop looking for it in what we perceive as outside of us. We must find that resonance of union inside and hold onto it, moment by moment. Ask yourself: “Am I living in joy?” Most people would say that joy is fleeting. Our ability to stay in contact with the simple fullness of the heart tends to fade whenever our minds or emotions tell us we cannot live in and extend love depending on conditions. But the expression of love must be unconditional.
If you get still inside, you will find your love for the ineffable and its love for you. Finding that same clarity and simplicity in our relationships and life frees us from conditionality and dualistic thinking. Then we can open our hearts and extend into the dynamics of life
while remaining established in that simple, profound love. This is how life becomes a celebration of abundance.
Your life is perfect because perfection has nothing to do with conditions. Life is not a negotiation; it’s a participation in the overflowing of simple abundance in the heart. When you find yourself doubting that, become very still in your heart. That is where we find love doubling back on itself — the intimacy between us and the Divine who dwells within us as our very Self. That union, that inner resonance of joy, is ever-present.
A profound shift occurs in understand-
ing that we infuse joy into the dynamics of our life rather than perpetually seeking it. You may think, “It can’t be possible that I could simply live in joy.” But that very thought limits your capacity to experience it. Spiritual practice is about transforming our perceptions.
The fundamental choice is this: Do you want to live a life of joy or not? We get to choose whether we live in the unconditional joy of freedom or in the pain of not knowing we are one with the Divine. If we want true fulfillment, whatever we must surrender seems petty in comparison. Surrender is simply letting go of all that binds us.
Infinite, unbounded plentitude is accessible to us at every moment. Imagine how different life would be if we lived from joy and fullness instead of seeking it. Then everything in life is sacred. Living from that clarity is a conscious choice. Choose wisely. Choose the highest in life. Choose to live in the experience of freedom, pure joy, and unconditional love. Choose transformation and liberation. Choose to live in depth every day. Choose it repeatedly, again and again.

We have two minds, our conscious mind and our subconscious mind. Our conscious mind is the part of our mental processing where we can think and talk rationally. How does acupuncture work? Great question!
Before each session, I educate my patients on Chinese medicine’s elegance, energy and science. And I’ve never had anyone tell me to stop! I enjoy explaining what’s happening physiologically as the needles are inserted.
The acupuncture points stimulate the Central Nervous System (CNS), which releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord and brain.
As soon as the first needle superficially penetrates the skin, your body says “invader”. There’s a foreign object sticking into it that it wants to heal and kick out, like a splinter. Your immune system kicks into high gear to heal that foreign object. Getting regular acupuncture raises your immune system.
The next process that kicks in is your autonomic nervous system. You can be in two places, “rest and digest” or “fight and flight.” Most of us are usually in the latter. The needles force your body into rest and digest to heal. This is when you begin to feel relaxed.
Lastly, you may feel a little pain when the needle is inserted. Your body protects itself from pain by giving you a chemical release from your brain stem of dopamine and enkephalins. When the session is complete, most patients state, “I’ve never felt so relaxed,” or even better, “I woke myself up snoring!”

Cultivating your energy requires perception and focus. What acts like a carrier wave is energy that follows thought and requires focus. We are beings of energy.
You can only live in a reality that you perceive. It matters that you realize you have a choice to perceive reality that gives energy, and drive, which determines the frequency you choose to be and live in that reality. The more focus you put into it, the more you get out of it, and the more you cultivate your choices, determining the frequency.
So above, so below, so within, so without, etc. This cultivation you choose vibrates the energy of health and abundance. If you can’t perceive the reality of living in health and abundance, underlying conflicts cloud your perception of living in that reality.
There are many approaches, and I offer people the ability to resolve conflicts. These conflicts are biological and imprint in the past and start the program, and the next time it comes around, it clouds the perception of moving forward only for primitive survival reasons to deal with the conflict and shut off to focus on what you want to experience, as in health or abundance.
For example, if you are moving toward health and wealth, but it brings up a situation where you may make the same mistake in the past that feels similar, it may show up again. Biologically, this will disturb your cortisol, potentially shutting down the drive at the moment of the trigger.
This is a mechanism that causes fatigue which involves the adrenal gland.

Crystals empower the physician within.
In my practice as an energy worker, I have found that the healing properties of crystals can be gentle, yet powerful, when coupled with positive thinking and the will to change one’s life. I have countless clients tell me how their anxiety, depression, stress, and anger deescalate when they pick up their crystals, take deep breaths, quiet the mind, and come back to the present where they can use their free will and choose to let go, forgive, and bring in peace and happiness.
What are healing crystals? Crystals are living beings from the mineral kingdom. They are natural solids baked in the opu (belly) of Mama Aina (earth). As there are many different types of plants and animals, each crystal has its own color, shape, and size due to its precise and repeating atomic arrangement. Some are very old, created during the age of the dinosaurs. Some are younger, bred with fallen meteorites from other planets, or born out of Mother Earth’s volcanic eruptions.
How do crystals work? Crystal healing is “vibrational medicine,” a term coined in the 1970s by IBM researcher Marcel Vogel. It happens within the human energy system – the mana, prana, chi, chakras, meridians, nadis, and auras. Some believe certain stones can alter the vibration of the body’s molecules by attuning and entraining
The stones I love to work with during the summer toward the fall season are associated with the astrological sign of Cancer and Leo. They usually are yellow, orange, and red, which are colors related to the root, sacral, and solar plexus chakras. The summer’s sun reflects the warmth of these stones, from which their crystalline properties can help balance the chakras. The colors and crystals are also associated with our connections with family, loved ones, and community, as well as with Mother Nature and the diverse parts of our Inner Selves.
Cancer and Leo stones: Golden calcite, center sphere, helps improve fertility, the reproductive system, bone growth, and calcium deficiency. It brings stability and balance.
Citrine, pointers, is considered the money stone that brings abundance and wealth. It is good for the digestive system, as well as helps bring positivity and helps raise your self-esteem and confidence.
Carnelian is one of my “energy” stones that gives me motivation and creativity. It helps with study, memory, inspiration, and speech, and is also good for live performers. Singers like Adele put Carnelian in their bras to help with confidence, protection, and grounding down.

them to the flawless energetic perfection of the crystals. Crystal healing occurs further through an electrical charge within the physical body. The focused thought and intent of the one facilitating treatment can direct this: such as a Reiki practitioner, as requested and intended by the receiver: the client. A basic rule of thumb: Crystals must be used only for one’s highest good and with permission from the client.
Most often, people use crystals for self-healing. I often place a Herkimer Diamond, Lemurian, or fluorite over my third eye to clear out blockages and to get clarity on a situation. I see it as allowing the crystal’s sacred geometry – beautiful patterns that never atrophy – to retune brain waves, thoughts, and vibrations that are out of sync with peace, joy, and happiness. It’s an energy tune-up. We all live in flux, influenced by how we think and feel.
Often, we slack off or tighten up and get out of tune. It’s like using a tuning fork for our chakra petal strings, bringing back harmony, balance, and good health. Crystals help us with shining our light from within, and entraining with our Higher Self.
As a working psychotherapist for nearly 20 years, I’ve witnessed the importance of talk therapy. I also enjoy energy healing by meditating with crystals. My clients who do mindfulness techniques with me have improved even beyond what talk therapy can offer, as they trust the vibrational medicine from the Aina to help them override negative thoughts and stuck phantom energies in their painful bodies and looping minds.

When I first started my private practice in 2010, I went from food stamps and massive debt to being able to take time off work and travel in a year. I knew it should be possible to make money doing my soul’s work, but I had to let some deep old patterns die and align with a post-capitalist feminine witchy style of business guided by my soul. Because I experienced such a profound 180 firsthand, I’ve always been drawn to working with the subconscious to shift our money experience.
I have a visualization to share that came to me in a session with a client back in San Francisco many years ago. He was a CEO trying to sell his startup. More than anything, he didn’t want to be a “failed CEO” who lost money on the venture and would have been happy to make even a $1 profit. In our next session, he jubilantly told me not only did he sell for an 8-figure profit and pay his investors, but he could also take home a 7-figure profit himself!
Maybe you’re not set up to take in an extra million from the universe at the moment, but hopefully, it can support a nice little boost for you of whatever you’d like more of.
*I highly recommend having someone else read the visualization out loud to you, slowly, so that you can be fully receptive to each step.* Start by closing your eyes and visualizing a faucet. It can look however you want. Let it just float before you, a magic faucet pouring out abundance.
Take a few breaths into that scene. (You
can learn a lot from how you first visualize this scene. I’ve had folks imagine this faucet in another galaxy… you can imagine how this guy’s finances looked!
Next, if it’s not there already, float the faucet over your lap so that it is pouring its abundance (whatever that looks like to you) onto your lap.
Keep taking breaths into your belly until this feels easy to imagine.
Now reach your hand and turn up the faucet so that it is pouring more into your lap. Take some deep breaths and relax into this scene of your lap, filling with the abundance of (whatever you want more of).
Take your time here and let your nervous system calibrate to this increased flow. You can play with decreasing and increasing the flow if that helps you relax into an increased flow.
Once you are breathing deeply into this generous flow of abundance pouring into your lap, see yourself zooming out a bit from this scene so that what you see is all happening in the center of your chest. That faucet, flowing abundance into your lap, is a scene happening in a golden bubble in your heart center.
Take a few breaths into that.
All of the past few minutes, the faucet and your calibration with it, were all happening in the center of your being. Your settings for abundance are within you, and you can access them.
Do this as frequently and as slow-paced as you need to feel a shift.
The more you work on relaxing your nervous system doing this exercise, the more you’ll get out of it. That’s why having a second person talk you through it is ideal. Take turns and hold space for each other! And let me know if this calls in some miraculous synchronicities for you!

I reflect on many years writing for Maui Vision Magazine, and all the different changes in my life.
I was born Catholic, and as an adult moved into a hippie lifestyle, which brought Eastern philosophy into my view. Then when I found Unity Church on Maui, I stepped back into a Christian way of life in a softer overtone.
When I started fostering children, I started to attend Christian churches, and I was recently baptized with my son. I truly am enjoying my reconnection with Christianity, finding an understanding that I was not “still” enough to hear, but now I know my Father is always with me.
In the church I am now with, Grace Bible Church in Kahului, the congregation is reading a book called The Bait of Satan, by John R. Bevere, and this book is blowing my mind! It is based on the belief that taking offense to someone for something is what keeps us separate from God, from what Our Father has to give to us, our good. Our thinking thoughts about being offended by someone keep us from receiving our gifts from Our Father. Many teachers have taught me: “Your thoughts create your reality, Change Your Thinking Change Your Life,” (including my teacher, Louise Hay).
And now I hear it in a way that tells me the exact thing that causes me to be unhappy and feeling out of sync is being resentful to someone, or a situation or their actions towards me. And here is the clincher: It doesn’t matter if I am rightfully offended, or just think I’m rightfully offended; I am harming myself by not letting go of the offense. Sometimes we have to be inconvenienced by someone’s behavior or actions towards us, to learn something, to gain something, bottom line, to be blessed!

Our spines are the bridge from brain to body, housing and protecting the precious spinal cord that is made out of neurons – just like your brain. Within the realm of consciousness exploration and understanding our physical bodies, a fascinating aspect that demands attention is the concept of the liquid crystal matrix. Considering the neuron-rich, structured water in the extracellular matrix of the fascia, we uncover an even deeper understanding of our body as a conscious light vehicle.
The fascia is a complex network of connective tissue that surrounds and supports our muscles, organs, and other structures. Within the fascial matrix, structured water exists in a highly organized and coherent state. Drinking adequate amounts of water and consuming a diet rich in nutrient-dense fresh fruits and vegetables can support the vitality of this matrix. Develop Movement and Body Awareness . Engaging in mindful movement practices, such as yoga, tai chi, or dance, can help to promote the optimal flow of energy and information within the liquid crystal matrix. Developing body awareness through these practices allows a deeper connection with the fascia and its inherent consciousness.
