How does acupuncture work? Great question!

Before each session, I educate my patients on Chinese medicine’s elegance, energy and science. And I’ve never had anyone tell me to stop! I enjoy explaining what’s happening physiologically as the needles are inserted.

The acupuncture points stimulate the Central Nervous System (CNS), which releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord and brain.

As soon as the first needle superficially penetrates the skin, your body says “invader”. There’s a foreign object sticking into it that it wants to heal and kick out, like a splinter. Your immune system kicks into high gear to heal that foreign object. Getting regular acupuncture raises your immune system.

The next process that kicks in is your autonomic nervous system. You can be in two places, “rest and digest” or “fight and flight.” Most of us are usually in the latter. The needles force your body into rest and digest to heal. This is when you begin to feel relaxed.

Lastly, you may feel a little pain when the needle is inserted. Your body protects itself from pain by giving you a chemical release from your brain stem of dopamine and enkephalins. When the session is complete, most patients state, “I’ve never felt so relaxed,” or even better, “I woke myself up snoring!”

Treatment from an experienced acupuncturist has many proven benefits, like relieving pain. However, there are also subtle benefits, such as aiding in releasing nitric oxide at the insertion site, releasing emotions, decreasing stress and improving cognitive issues, and many more.

The biochemical changes you receive from an acupuncture treatment stimulate and strengthen the body’s healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.
