Organizations like the German Accelerator and the STEP program run by the GACC are offering great opportunities to help those young, innovative companies. One such start-up is Speechagain, an app that helps people eliminate or minimize their stutter.

From the Desk of the Publisher On December 7th, 2018, I became a U.S. citizen. It was a peculiar feeling, to walk into City Hall as a German and exiting about one hour later as an American. All of a sudden, this country I lived in for the past 20 years became my country, with everything it stands for. Interestingly enough, New York had already felt like my city the minute I set foot in it, but that’s a New York thing — you either love it or hate it. But back to my story of becoming an American.

For some reason I knew I wanted to live in America since I was 10 years old. I had never been here before nor was I allowed to watch Dallas or Falcon’s Crest (which was conveniently called “Denver” in German).

I have no idea where that dream came from, but it was always there.

During high school, I played with the idea to sign up for an exchange year, but it was quite expensive at the time and I was too involved in my school, my community and, yes, my first boyfriend.

Opportunity came knocking again during my last year in high school when I came across a pamphlet advertising the “Cultural Representative Program” at Walt Disney World Florida. For those who have no idea what that means, I spent one year “schlepping” huge trays of pretend German food and steins of beer through the German Pavilion at EPCOT Center. While work was only mildly stimulating, I had an absolute blast living on the Disney campus with hundreds of other international kids and enjoyed everything America had to offer, including the Florida sun. Needless to say, I was hooked, but first, I had to go back home to finish my education.

A few years later in 1999, destiny had me arrive in New York City with 2 suitcases and a heart full of love. My second time moving to the U.S. was rather unplanned and I had no idea how long I would stay. One visa led to another, one job opportunity to the next, and I picked up a husband on the way, which finally allowed me to become a Green Card holder and start experiencing the “freedom” this land promised so many who came before me and will come after me. Once I was not bound to a specific company anymore due to my visa, my career took off and after my daughter was born,

I took a leap of faith into self-employment. Starting a company is a rather straightforward process in the U.S. with low financial risk and little bureocratic red tape. Keeping it alive is another story which I soon had to learn …

After having a Green Card for five years, I was eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship, however, I saw no initial need to jump through all the hoops. Live was good. My daughter was healthy.

Business was growing and things seemed to move in the right direction. Still, with the political climate changing and immigration topics being at the top of election agendas on both sides of the aisle, I felt the need to solidify my status in the country which I chose out of free will and love for the many reasons that America stands for.

In November last year, I got my interview appointment. I prepared by brushing up on American history and was a bit nervous about what to expect. The officer assigned to interview me was a lovely Russian lady with an accent that greatly surpassed mine.

The conversation would have been quite comical if it wasn’t so serious. An open (but not overdue) parking ticket finally delayed my process by a couple of days, but on December 7th, 2018, I was ready to be sworn in. It turned out to be an emotional event for me which took me by surprise. My fellow new Americans that morning were a colorful mix from over 43 nations, which shows the truly diverse country we all are lucky to call our own. I, for my part, am equally proud to be an American as well as representing my German culture. Publishing a magazine like HEIMAT abroad is the perfect outlet for both.

PUBLISHER Gabi Hegan is originally from Munich and spent her “first” career in the hotel industry.

After her daughter was born in 2009 she founded the NYC based community website www.citykinder.com and in 2017 the annual ICH BIN EXPAT FAIR. In 2018 she launched the new platform www.heimatabroad.com to reach and support German-speaking expats and residents nationwide. She is excited to collaborate with Petra Schurmann from www.german-world.com to co-publish a brand new bilingual magazine servicing newly arrived expats, recent immigrants and German-Americans alike.

CONTENT Sarah Conlon grew up near Leipzig and calls sunny Southern Palatinate her adopted home. She has lived in New Zealand and Norway, and chose Boston as her second home in December 2017, where she now lives with her husband.

After completing her Master’s degree in American Literature, Media, and Communication at the University of Mannheim, she lived in Connecticut as a journalist for 8 months to write for Das Pfalz Magazin from a small house on a lake. At HEIMAT abroad she is responsible for articles and translations.

CO-PUBLISHER Petra Schurmann studied in Heidelberg before working for Bertelsmann AG in Germany and in California. In 2000, Petra and the journalist Alexander Hast founded the website www.german-world.com in L.A. to promote German culture in the US. In 2003 they added the bilingual print publication "German World Magazine". Since 2013, Petra has also been involved in the annual film festival "German Currents", and has been a supporter of the multi-language preschool "Kigala" as well as the Goethe-International Charter School in L.A. and the Steuben Parade in New York.

CONTENT Kathrin Schönberg studied in Cologne and Koblenz and taught elementary school for 10 years. Since 2008 she lives with her husband and 2 daughters in San José, CA. She loves living in the "Golden State”, but still misses Cologne, her family, friends and German bread. In 2015 she started her blog "Cöllefornia” where she takes a good look at the joys and challenges of being at home in two worlds. Kathrin taught German classes at her "Das Fliegende Klassenzimmer” for many years. Now she works at the GISSV in Mountain View and is excited to be a regular contributor to HEIMAT abroad.

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Juliane Tranacher was born in Lübeck.

As a high school student she spent one year in Minnesota, exploring "America's heartland". After studying in Freiburg and Gothenburg (Sweden), Juliane moved to Berlin to work as an editor and communications manager in the financial sector.

From 2015 to 2017 she lived in New York City with her husband, where they welcomed their first daughter. Currently Juliane resides in Hamburg with her family.

DESIGN Conny Gaertner is originally from Dresden, Germany, where she had established her own graphic design and photography business. One of her big dreams was always living abroad, so when the opportunity arose she followed her husband to Bridgewater, New Jersey. While getting settled in the US, Conny enjoyed spending time with her 2 daughters as a stayat-home mum for a while. Now she is happy to use her creativity again as the lead designer for HEIMAT abroad Magazine and other mostly German clients in the US.

Redefining the Indispensable Relationship There is no doubt that the transatlantic relationship that has contributed to peace, stability, and prosperity for more than 70 years is at a critical juncture. The United States and Germany have numerous Knackpunkte – sticking points – which include defense spending by NATO member states, tariffs and trade, and climate change. There are also policy differences on how to bring stability to the Middle East, policy toward Russia, and energy – most notably regarding Nord Stream 2.

There is a danger that these tensions can create fissures in the relationship, allowing strategic competitors like China and Russia to fill this vacuum. And with Germany and the United States both inwardly focused on a variety of issues, it is harder to address the common challenges in a constructive way. But, just because it is difficult does not mean it is not worthwhile.

At the American Council on Germany (ACG), we certainly believe that Germany is our most important strategic partner. It is a valuable relationship – not just for historical and sentimental reasons stemming from the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Airlift, historic speeches by Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, or America’s role in facilitating German unification. We have common interests and share common challenges.

practices, we can develop solutions to common challenges. But, we can also deepen our mutual understanding, overcome differences, address common challenges, and pursue new opportunities.

Our governments will always have political differences from time to time, but our mutual understanding, respect, and cooperation will endure because of the shared values and close personal, social, business, and cultural ties that have been forged over the past 70 years. We must not, however, take the relationship for granted, nor refrain from being critical or questioning certain aspects of the alliance from time to time. That should be a part of every friendship and partnership.

The tensions to the transatlantic partnership that has defined the West for decades may be daunting, but they also create opportunities. Organizations like the ACG can play a key role in shoring up transatlantic ties and in strengthening German-American bonds at this critical time. The ACG has served as a vital forum for dialogue and engagement across the Atlantic for more than 65 years – and our mission is more important than ever. This relationship is indispensable, but it is not indestructible.

The United States may not work with Germany on every issue, but if one looks at the strategic issues the U.S. faces and at all the countries that we collaborate with to address these challenges, Germany is – or at least should be – a critical partner on most issues. Our two countries support one another, learn from one another, and provide important leadership within the European Union and the global community.

As the tide of globalization peaks and the global security and economic orders show new signs of strain, many of today’s challenges simply cannot be contained by national or geographic boundaries.

Migration, urban sustainability, cyber security, digitalization, workforce preparedness, and climate change are just a few of the pressing issues requiring joint action because they impact all of us in our local communities. To tackle these challenges, the U.S. needs allies – and Germany is an indispensable partner in helping find solutions to these complex issues.

Through a range of programs and activities, the ACG invests in the German-American relationship, striving to build and strengthen transatlantic networks in business, government, the media, academia, and other fields. Particularly when there are tensions between Washington and Berlin, it is important to bring together thought-leaders and practitioners from the state and local level. Through the frank and open exchange of ideas and best

NEWS | Germany Frank de Winne, a former Dutch astronaut and head of the astronaut training program at the EAC, added that other exciting projects for the coming years include a robotic mission to Mars, in which a lander would extract ground samples and return those to Earth.

GERMAN ASTRONAUT ALEXANDER GERST DELIGHTS IN “SMELLING THE GRASS” BACK ON EARTH Astro Alex, back on terra firma after nearly six months in space, stressed the importance of protecting our planet for future generations. And as for re-entry, wind and weather feel great after so long in zero gravity.

German astronaut Alexander Gerst brought one central message back from the International Space Station (ISS): the appreciation for our common planet and the need to work together across continents, nations and borders to protect our fragile environment.

Gerst spoke at a press conference at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne on Saturday after having returned from the ISS two days earlier along with his colleagues, Sergey Prokopyev of Russia and Serena Aunon-Chancellor of the NASA. “Astro Alex,“ as he is known on Twitter, said that his return made it clear to him how many sensations humans can only enjoy on Earth: the feeling of the wind that greeted him in the snow-covered desert of Kazakhstan, the rain that hit his face when leaving the plane in Cologne, or the smell of the forest while doing his first exercises to recover after more than half a year in zero gravity.

“Even smelling the grass shows us what a special and important place Earth is for us humans,“ he stressed.

Space exploration: Not just done by astronauts Gerst pointed out that the work of the astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the ISS is often the most visible aspect of space exploration, but is in reality a tiny fraction of a huge collective international effort that makes such research possible. “Without all the planners, instructors, the people at ground control and the thousands of those who have built the modules of the ISS, all of this would not be possible,“ he said. “It is always the result of the cooperation of a large team.

No single country would have been in the position to build such a space station.“ 8 | HEIMAT abroad | SPRING 2019

The future of the ISS and beyond Johann-Dietrich Wörner, Director General of the European Space Agency, recalled that the ISS came about as the “the fusion of two ideas: peace and freedom,“ because “Peace“ was the name of the former Russian space station “Mir“, while “freedom“ was supposed to become the name of a once-planned but never realized US space station. The US space agency NASA eventually preferred to put its research and money into building the ISS, rather than going a separate way.

Wörner also said he does not see the ISS outliving its usefulness anytime soon.

“Everybody is talking about the year 2024, but I really don‘t see the end of the ISS yet.“ He was optimistic, however, that the ESA council of ministers and other international space agencies would soon agree to build a new “Gateway“ space station to orbit the moon.

For 2019, he said that the next ESA astronaut, Luca Parmitano of Italy, would return to the ISS aboard the mission “Beyond. “The idea was that that mission would look “beyond the horizon“—a play on the name of Gerst‘s second space mission, “Horizons.“

Failures and solutions Gerst, who served as ISS commander for the last six months on the “Horizons“ mission, had to face some serious challenges during his stint. First, a sloppily covered tiny hole in a part of the Sosuz spaceship that was docked to the ISS resulted in a loss of cabin pressure. The astronauts were able to fix the hole quickly, but the investigation into how it occurred has not yet been finalized.

Probably more difficult for the commander: A flight of two replacement crew members to the ISS failed after takeoff and the Soyuz capsule had to make an emergency landing.

That incident resulted in a profound change to the time schedule for maintenance work, research projects and scheduled extra-vehicular activities, including the modernization of technical components, such as batteries.

“We had to work a bit overtime,“ Gerst recalled, „and we had to postpone some of the maintenance work. But we managed to make sure the ISS remained in a good working order and, overall, we almost managed to get all of our planned research projects done in time.“ Asked about whether he intended to return to space anytime soon, Gerst pointed out that he is still an astronaut and would be happy to go on another mission, but that it is not on him to decide. There are now other young trained astronauts, too, like Matthias Maurer, who also would like to get their chance. He would support them in preparing for their space flights.

Die Erforschung des Weltalls: Nicht nur Astronauten sind daran beteiligt Gerst weist darauf hin, dass die Arbeit der Astronauten und Kosmonauten an Bord der ISS oft der Aspekt der Raumforschung ist, der am sichtbarsten ist, aber in Wahrheit ist das nur ein äußerst kleiner Teil der enormen internationalen, kollektiven Zusammenarbeit, die solche Forschungen möglich machen. „Ohne die Planer und Ausbilder, das Kontrollpersonal am Boden und die tausenden Menschen, die die Module der ISS gebaut haben, wäre das alles nicht möglich” sagte er. „Es ist immer das Ergebnis der Zusammenarbeit eines großen Teams. Kein Land wäre alleine in der Position, eine solche Raumstation zu bauen.”

Die Zukunft der ISS Johann-Dietrich Wörner, Generaldirektor der Europäischen Weltraumorganisation, erinnert sich, dass die ISS aus „2 Ideen heraus entstanden ist: Frieden und Freiheit”, denn „Frieden” war der Name der früheren russischen Raumstation „Mir”, während “Freiheit” der Name der geplanten, aber niemals durchgeführten Raumstation der USA werden sollte. Die US-Raumfahrtbehörde NASA hat es dann doch vorgezogen, Forschung und Geld in den Aufbau der ISS zu investieren, anstelle separater Wege zu gehen.

Wörner sagte auch, dass er keine Gefahr sieht, dass die ISS bald ihren Nutzen verliert. „Jeder spricht über das Jahr 2024, aber ich sehe wirklich noch kein Ende für die ISS.“ Er war jedoch optimistisch, dass der ESA Ministerrat und andere internationale Raumfahrtbehörden bald dem Bau einer weiteren “Gateway”-Raumstation zustimmen werden, die den Mond umkreisen soll.

Er sagte auch, dass in 2019 der nächste ESA Astronaut, Luca Parmitano aus Italien, zur ISS als Teil der Mission „Beyond” zurückkehren würde. Die Idee war, dass diese Mission über den Horizont hinaus schauen soll: “Beyond the horizon“—ein Wortspiel mit dem Namen von Gersts

zweiter Mission, „Horizons“ (Horizonte).

Frank de Winne, ein früherer niederländischer Astronaut und Chef des Astronautentrainingsprogramms der EAC, fügte hinzu, dass andere spannende Projekte für die nächsten Jahre geplant sind, wie eine Roboter-Mission zum Mars, in der ein Lander Bodenproben entnehmen und diese zurück zur Erde bringen würde.

Niederlagen und Lösungen Gerst, der die letzten 6 Monate als Kommandant der ISS auf der Mission „Horizons“ verbracht hat, musste einige ernsthafte Herausforderungen während seiner Zeit meistern. Zuerst ein schlampig repariertes winzig kleines Lock in einem Teil des Soyuz-Raumschiffs, das an der ISS angedockt war, und einen Verlust des Kabinendrucks verursachte. Die Astronauten konnten das Loch schnell reparieren, aber die Ermittlungen, wie das passieren konnte, sind noch nicht abgeschlossen.

Ein wahrscheinlich größeres Problem für den Kommandanten: Ein Flug mit 2 Ersatzastronauten zur ISS scheiterte nach dem Take-Off und die Soyuz-Kapsel musste notlanden. Dieser Zwischenfall hatte zur Folge, dass die Zeitplanung für die Instandhaltung, Forschungsprojekte und geplante Aktivitäten außerhalb des Raumschiffs, einschließlich der Modernisierung der technischen Komponenten wie Batterien komplett neu aufgestellt werden musste. „Wir mussten ein paar Überstunden machen”, erinnert sich Gerst, „und wir mussten ein paar der Instandhaltungsprojekte aufschieben. Aber wir konnten sicherstellen, dass die ISS weiterhin in gutem Zustand ist und wir konnten zum Schluss fast alle unsere geplanten Forschungsprojekte im vorgesehenen Zeitrahmen abschließen.”

Auf die Frage, ob er vorhat, in naher Zukunft nochmal ins All zu reisen, antwortete Gerst, dass er immer noch Astronaut sei und gerne noch einmal auf eine Weltraummission gehen würde, aber die Entscheidung läge nicht bei ihm. Weiterhin gibt es jetzt andere junge Astronauten, wie Matthias Maurer, die auch gerne ihre Chance nutzen wollen. Er würde ihnen gerne helfen, sich auf die Weltraumflüge vorzubereiten.

He has disputed the allegations that his offspring were not properly socialized, highlighting their participation in various clubs and organizations. He added that he believed the family circle to be the best environment for children.

Dirk Wunderlich said they had considered moving to an EU country in which homeschooling is legal, such as France, but he said they were not allowed to move as they didn‘t have full custody of the children at that time.

EUROPEAN COURT RULES AGAINST GERMAN HOMESCHOOLING FAMILY The court found that German authorities did not violate the parental rights of the Wunderlich family by forcing their children to attend school. Homeschooling has been illegal in Germany since 1919.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled against a German family from the state of Hesse that has been fighting for years for the right to homeschool their children, a practice that is illegal in Germany.

The Wunderlich family had argued that the government had violated Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which guarantees protection for the privacy of home and family life, by forcing their four children to attend a local school.

The court found, however, that the family had not provided sufficient evidence that the children were properly educated and socialized, and that a government removing children from their parents to ensure they receive an education did not violate Article 8.

In their ruling, the ECHR also noted the troubling statement by father Dirk Wunderlich that implied children were the “property“ of their parents.

“The authorities...have a duty to protect children,“ due to “reasonably held concerns,“ the court noted.

The most horrible day‘ „August 29, 2013, as 40 officials stood before our door, was the most horrible day for us,“ Dirk Wunderlich told DW. He said the authorities were contacted by neighbors who claimed he had said he would rather kill his children than send them to school. „What nonsense,“ said Wunderlich, calling the accusations „invented.“ Their children were returned to them after three weeks.

Wunderlich and his wife, Petra, are both gardeners, who themselves graduated from a normal high school, which they attended „not reluctantly,“ Dirk said.

But school has changed since his day, Wunderlich has argued.

He believes that now, teachers do less in the classroom and expect children to do most of their work and learning as homework 10 | HEIMAT abroad | SPRING 2019

Rare exceptions for homeschooling ban Obligatory schooling has been part of German law continuously since 1919, and is enshrined in several state constitutions as well.

“A general exemption from compulsory education for pedagogical or religious reasons is not allowed,“ the Conference of German Culture Ministers (KMK) told DW. The rare exceptions are for severe illnesses, the children of diplomats, and in rare instances for working children, such as child actors.

The KMK said it believes there are between 500 and 1,000 cases of parents homeschooling their children across Germany.

While private schooling exists in Germany, it is far less common than in many other countries; German private schools also broadly follow the curriculum of the state where they‘re based.

DER EUROPÄISCHE GERICHTSHOF ENTSCHEIDET GEGEN “HOMESCHOOLING” -GESUCH EINER FAMILIE Das Gericht befand, dass deutsche Behörden nicht gegen das elterliche Erziehungsrecht der Familie Wunderlich verstößt, indem sie deren Kinder zwingen, eine Schule zu besuchen. Homeschooling ist seit 1919 in Deutschland verboten.

Der Europäische Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte (ECHR) hat gegen eine deutsche Familie aus Hessen entschieden, die seit Jahren für das Recht kämpft, ihre Kinder zu Hause zu unterrichten, was in Deutschland nicht erlaubt ist.

Die Familie Wunderlich hat als Argument angeführt, dass die Regierung gegen Artikel 8 der Europäischen Menschenrechtskonvention verstößt, die besagt, dass die Privatsphäre von Heim und Familie geschützt ist, indem sie deren vier Kinder zwingt, eine lokale Schule zu besuchen.

Das Gericht befand jedoch, dass die Familie nicht genug Beweise erbracht hat, dass die Kinder adäquat unterrichtet und sozialisiert wurden und weiterhin, dass die Regierung Artikel 8 nicht verletzt hat, indem sie den Eltern die Kinder entzogen hat, um deren Schulbildung zu garantieren.

HEIMAT abroad Rubrik NEWS | Germany Im Gerichtsbeschluss hat der ECHR auch die besorgniserregende Äußerung des Vaters Dirk Wunderlich in Betracht gezogen, die impliziert, dass Kinder “Eigentum” der Eltern seien. „Die Behörden…. haben die Pflicht, Kinder zu beschützen”, bestätigte der Gerichtshof.

Er weist die Anklagen zurück, dass seine Kinder nicht adäquat sozialisiert sind, indem er unterstreicht, dass sie in verschiedenen Clubs und Organisationen Mitglied sind. Er fügte noch hinzu, dass seiner Meinung nach der Familienkreis das beste Umfeld für Kinder sei.

Der schlimmste Tag „Der 29. August 2013 war der schlimmste Tag für uns, als 40 Beamte vor unserer Tür standen”, erzählte Dirk Wunderlich DW. Er sagt, die Behörden wurden von den Nachbarn kontaktiert, die behaupteten, dass er gesagt habe, er würde seine Kinder lieber umbringen als zur Schule zu schicken.

Dirk Wunderlich sagte, dass sie es in Erwägung gezogen hatten, in ein anderes EU-Land auszuwandern, in dem Homeschooling erlaubt ist, wie zum Beispiel in Frankreich, was aber nicht möglich war, da sie zu der Zeit nicht das volle Sorgerecht für die Kinder hatten.

„Was für ein Quatsch”, sagte Wunderlich, der die Anschuldigungen als „erfunden” bezeichnete. Die Kinder wurden nach drei Wochen wieder zu den Eltern zurückgebracht.

Wunderlich und seine Frau Petra, beide Gärtner, besitzen Abschlüsse von regulären weiterführenden Schulen, die sie „nicht widerwillig” besucht haben, so Dirk.

Aber die Schulen haben sich seit seiner Zeit verändert, argumentiert Wunderlich. Er glaubt, dass heutzutage die Lehrer weniger leisten und erwarten, dass die meiste Schularbeit und das Lernen sowieso durch die Hausaufgaben stattfinden. Weiterhin weist er darauf hin, dass er und seine Frau deren Kinder mit Hilfe der christlichen Fernunterrichtsschule unterrichtet haben und er den zuständigen Behörden angeboten hatte, das Programm jederzeit zu prüfen.

Seltene Ausnahmen des Homeschooling-Verbots Die Schulpflicht ist durchgehend Teil des deutschen Rechts seit 1919 und ist auch in einigen Verfassungen der Bundesländer verankert. „Eine generelle Ausnahme der Schulpflicht für pädagogische oder religiöse Gründe ist nicht erlaubt”, bestätigte die Konferenz der Kultusminister (KMK) gegenüber DW. Seltene Ausnahmen werden für Kinder mit schwerwiegenden Krankheiten, Diplomatenkinder und in noch selteneren Ausnahmen für arbeitende Kinder, wie Schauspieler, gemacht.

Laut KMK gibt es zwischen 500 und 1,000 Fälle in ganz Deutschland, in denen Homeschooling erlaubt wurde. Private Schulen existieren zwar in Deutschland, sind aber weit weniger verbreitet als in anderen Ländern. Deutsche Privatschulen folgen aber auch weitgehend dem Unterrichtsplan der Bundesstaaten, in denen sie ansässig sind.

GERMAN COMPANIES IN U.S. GROW DESPITE CONCERNS ABOUT FREE TRADE AND WORKFORCE German subsidiaries in the U.S. are growing and investing heavily despite some skepticism regarding the state of free trade and the availability of a skilled workforce, according to the 2019 “German American Business Outlook” (GABO) survey conducted by the German American Chambers of Commerce (GACCs) and the Representative of German Industry & Trade (RGIT).

Despite concerns related to protectionist tendencies in U.S. trade policy, a vast majority (91%) of the surveyed German companies are expecting growth for their own businesses. Workforce remains a vital issue for German subsidiaries in the U.S.: Companies continue to face a lack of skilled workforce (87%), and difficulties in obtaining work visas have increased from 58% to 78% compared to 2018.

“The increasingly uncertain investment environment is a roadblock of this positive trajectory, and the GACCs are here to support German subsidiaries with their continued success in the U.S.,” says Peter Riehle, the newly elected Chairman of the GACC. Key opportunities for German companies in the U.S.—according to the survey—are the 2018 tax reform as well as a reduction of regulations that have had a favorable impact on a broad majority of respondents’ businesses. In addition, companies increasingly focus their growth agenda on mergers and acquisitions (M&A), with one out of five companies planning on expanding their business in 2019.

Key challenges, however, lie in the workforce development and visas: Finding skilled labor and obtaining work visas increasingly worry German companies. 90% of respondents say open markets are rather or very important to their business.

Immediately following the mid-term elections in November 2018, the GACCs and RGIT approached 1,900 senior executives of German-owned subsidiaries in the U.S. with the “German American Business Outlook”. German companies created more than 674,000 jobs in the U.S. and total investments from Germany to the U.S. amount to US$ 373 billion.

TROTZ ERSTER ANZEICHEN FÜR EINEN WIRTSCHAFTSABSCHWUNG WACHSEN DEUTSCHE UNTERNEHMEN WEITER Deutsche Tochtergesellschaften wachsen und investieren immer mehr, trotz Freihandel-Einschränkungen und Fachkräftemangel, besagt die aktuelle Studie „German American Business Outlook“ 2019 (GABO). Die GABO-Umfrage wird jährlich durch die Deutsch-Amerikanischen Handelskammern (AHK USA) sowie dem Delegierten der Deutschen Wirtschaft (RGIT) durchgeführt.

Trotz Sorgen bezüglich der protektionistischen US-Handelspolitik erwartet ein Großteil (91%) der befragten deutschen Tochtergesellschaften Wachstum für ihr Unternehmen. Der Fachkräftemangel bleibt jedoch eine Hauptsorge für 87% der deutschen Unternehmen in den USA. Zusätzlich ist es für Firmen schwieriger geworden, Arbeitsvisa zu erhalten: 2018 haben 78% der befragten Unternehmen dies als Schwierigkeit angegeben, im Vergleich zu 58% im Vorjahr.

„Für diese positiven Entwicklungen sind die sich vergrößernden Unsicherheiten eine Gefahr. Die AHK USA wird die deutschen Tochtergesellschaften daher umso mehr bei ihrem Geschäft in den USA unterstützen“, sagt Peter Riehle, neu gewählter Vorstandsvorsitzender der AHK. Chancen, laut GABO, liegen in den wirtschaftsfreundlichen Reformen, wie die Steuerreform 2018 und die gleichzeitige Deregulierung, die einen positiven Einfluss auf die große Mehrheit der befragten Unternehmen hatten. Der Kapazitätsausbau nimmt weiterhin zu und Firmen setzen bei der Erweiterung vermehrt auf Mergers und Akquisitionen (M&A): Eine von fünf Firmen plant ihr Geschäft in 2019 durch M&A zu erweitern.

Auf der anderen Seite stehen die Herausforderungen im Bereich Fachkräftemangel und Visa: Qualifiziertes Personal vor Ort zu finden sowie Schwierigkeiten beim Erhalt von Arbeitsvisa machen deutschen Unternehmen zu schaffen. 90% der befragten Unternehmen sagen, dass offene Märkte wichtig oder sehr wichtig für ihr Geschäft sind.

Direkt im Anschluss an die amerikanischen Midterm-Wahlen im November 2018 schickten die AHK USA und RGIT die Umfrage „German American Business Outlook“ an 1.900 Führungskräfte deutscher Firmen in den USA. Deutsche Unternehmen schaffen mehr als 674.000 Stellen in den USA; deutsche Investitionen in den USA belaufen sich auf 373 Milliarden US-Dollar.

ICH BIN EXPAT FAIR in New York City

Many major cities like Amsterdam, Singapore and Munich have annual fairs and events for their expat community. With New York being one of the most diverse cities in the world, one would think that it definitely has a similar event. To our surprise it did not – until the HEIMAT abroad team came along and changed that. At least for the German speaking community.

On November 3rd, 2018 the second annual ICH BIN EXPAT FAIR took place at The Mezzanine in downtown Manhattan. It was another huge success with close to 600 attendees, more than 40 exhibitors, talks and lectures, and a kids’ program.

Exhibitors representing industries like education, moving, housing, finance, law, and interior design showcased their products and services throughout the day. The food related booths featuring “quark” by WünderCreamery, cold pressed organic oils by Ulli‘s Oil Mill, and delicious Schmitt Lebkuchen and other imported European sweets

ACG’S MCCLOY AWARDS DINNER Honors Joe Kaeser of Siemens AG and 38th U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker

The American Council on Germany’s 26th annual John J. McCloy Awards Dinner paid tribute to two distinguished leaders who have fostered close economic ties across the Atlantic while celebrating the longstanding important partnership between Germany and the United States.

On December 3, the ACG honored Joe Kaeser, President and Chief Executive Officer of Siemens AG, with the 2018 McCloy Award and Penny Pritzker, 38th U.S. Secretary of Commerce and Founder and Chairman of PSP Partners, with the 2018 Transatlantic Leadership Award at Capitale in New York City. ACG Chairman Ambassador John B. Emerson, Vice Chairman of Capital Group International and former U.S. Ambassador to Germany, was the emcee. David Gill (1992 ACG Young Leader), Consul General of Germany in New York, read a letter from Chancellor Angela Merkel and also recounted the strong impact his experience as an ACG Young Leader had on his career trajectory. ACG President Dr. Steven E. Sokol gave an overview of the ACG’s recent initiatives and moderated a panel discussion with the honorees. About 325 thought leaders, decision-makers, and stakeholders from both sides of the Atlantic were in attendance.

The American Council on Germany is an independent, nonpartisan nonprofit organization that was founded in 1952 to strengthen German-American relations.

Today, through a range of programs and activities – including policy discussions in New York and across the country, conferences, a Young Leaders program, fellowships, and outreach – the ACG addresses the most pressing economic, political, and social challenges of the day to ensure bet-

ter mutual understanding across the Atlantic and across generations.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Kaeser highlighted the importance of dialogue in these times of division: “Today it takes dialogue to unite a divided society. Today it takes courage to speak up against racism, nationalism, and speak up for human rights. Today it also takes, more than ever, people like John McCloy. And last but not least, it takes leaders who show our people the way.” Ms. Pritzker underlined the ongoing importance of German-American ties, saying that “our partnership was and is vital to getting things done globally.”

Both honorees made a heartfelt mention of the pivotal role of the late George H.W. Bush – whom Mr. Kaeser called “one of America’s greatest sons” – in building transatlantic relations and helping to foster Germany’s unification.In the panel discussion that followed, Mr. Kaeser and Ms. Pritzker addressed topics including the roles of multinational corporations in a globalized world, how to address the skills gap and prepare for AI and other technological change, and how best to preserve and strengthen transatlantic relations in the coming years.

Responding to a question on what can be done to support and strengthen the transatlantic relationship now, Ms. Pritzker ans-

wered, “Dialogue and engagement. When you are engaging, you are trying to understand. And when you are trying to understand, you’re not fighting.” Joe Kaeser concurred, saying simply, “Talk to each other and not about each other.”

Musical performances were provided by Suspicious Package, a Washington-based band that boasts one ACG Young Leader alumna and three Pulitzer Prizes.

DIE ZUKUNFT MEINER STADT – THE FUTURE OF MY CITY A project of the University Alliance Ruhr for the Deutschlandjahr USA 2018-2019

Deutschlandjahr USA is in full swing. Our featured project takes a closer look at two regions that are usually only noticed during a fly-over from 35,000 feet above or by driving through them as they still are considered “underdogs”: The Rust Belt in the US and the Ruhr area (Ruhrgebiet) in Germany. In both areas the decline of formerly key industrial towns led to serious changes in the socio-economic, cultural and mental infrastructure of whole regions.

And in both areas communities have worked hard to transform the former conurbations and to create new economic opportunities.

With the project “Die Zukunft meiner Stadt – The Future of My City” the US office of the University Alliance Ruhr, a regional consortium of Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund University, and the University of Duisburg-Essen, invites students as well as experts from the Ruhr area and the Rust Belt to develop joint visions for the future of their regions. On the website www.thefutureofmycity.org, which was specifically developed for the project, students from Germany and the US exchange ideas and get advice from experts. In addition to articles, learning materials, and videos, the website offers virtual learning platforms where participants can stay in touch and discuss sustainable urban development initiatives in their relevant geographic areas.

Currently almost 100 students from both countries signed up and are working on topics like equal access to education, land use, water resource management, and gentrification. Among the submission is the play “Superior Donuts” with a plot that was originally set in Chicago and will now be rewritten and “moved” to Dortmund. The project is supervised by professors of UA Ruhr and US partner universities in addition to outside experts who gain insights into the progress of their teams via the learning platform and can lend support as needed.

At the end of May, all project proposals will have to be submitted to enter a competition. An independent commission will select the best projects and award the winners with, for example, trips to the US and to Germany. The winning teams will have the opportunity to present their projects to stakeholders and start forging longterm relationships with the other regions. It is those emerging relationships that will ultimately foster an on-going exchange between regions that face similar challenges.

DIE ZUKUNFT MEINER STADT – THE FUTURE OF MY CITY Ein Projekt der Universitätsallianz Ruhr für das Deutschlandjahr USA 2018-2019

Das Deutschlandjahr USA ist voll im Gange und rückt mit einem Projekt Regionen in den Blick, die oft nur beim Überfliegen aus 10 km Entfernung oder auf der Durchfahrt wahrgenommen werden und denen noch immer ein wenig der Ruf des “Underdogs” anheftet: Der Rust Belt in den USA und das Ruhrgebiet in Deutschland. Hier wie dort führte der Niedergang ehemaliger industrieller Kernregionen zu nachhaltigen Veränderungen in der sozioökonomischen, kulturellen und mentalen Infrastruktur ganzer Regionen. Hier wie dort wird versucht, die ehemaligen industriellen Ballungsgebiete auf eine neue ökonomische Basis zu stellen.

Ende Mai ist es dann soweit, denn bis dahin sollen alle Projekte vorliegen. Aus ihnen wählt eine unabhängige Kommission die besten Arbeiten aus und prämiert sie, beispielsweise mit Reisen in die USA und nach Deutschland. Dort können die Siegerteams ihre Projekte vorstellen und nachhaltige Beziehungen zu der jeweils anderen Region aufbauen. Aus den Begegnungen, die sich während der kommenden Monate zwischen dem Ruhrgebiet und dem Rust Belt ergeben, soll sich ein nachhaltiger Austausch entwickeln zwischen Regionen, die sich ähnlichen Herausforderungen stellen.

Peter Rosenbaum Das Nordamerikabüro der Universitätsallianz Ruhr (UA Ruhr) vertritt seit 2004 die Ruhr-Universität Bochum, die Technische Universität Dortmund und die Universität Duisburg-Essen in den USA und in Kanada, um die Zusammenarbeit mit nordamerikanischen Partneruniversitäten zu intensivieren und neue transatlantische Kooperationen zu initiieren.

Mit dem Projekt „Die Zukunft meiner Stadt – The Future of My City” lädt das Nordamerikabüro der Universitätsallianz Ruhr, einem regionalen Verbund der Ruhr-Universität Bochum, der TU Dortmund und der Universität Duisburg-Essen, Studierende sowie Expert/-innen aus dem Ruhrgebiet und dem Rust Belt dazu ein, gemeinsame Visionen zur Zukunft ihrer Regionen zu entwerfen. Auf der eigens für dieses Projekt entwickelten Webseite (www.thefutureofmycity.org) tauschen sich Studierende aus Deutschland und den USA untereinander aus und stehen mit Expert/-innen in Kontakt. Neben Texten, Lernmaterialien, Videos und Statements bietet die Webseite auch virtuelle Lernplattformen, auf denen die Teilnehmenden gut miteinander in Kontakt bleiben und an Themen zur nachhaltigen und zukunftsfähigen Stadtentwicklung in ihren jeweiligen geografischen Bezugsräumen arbeiten können.

Angemeldet haben sich bislang knapp 100 Studierende aus beiden Ländern, die zu Themen wie Bildungsgerechtigkeit, Landnutzung, Wasserwirtschaft und Gentrifizierung arbeiten. Auch ein Theaterstück ist darunter, „Superior Donuts“, dessen Handlungsort von Chicago nach Dortmund verlagert werden soll. Begleitet wird die Projektarbeit von Lehrenden der beteiligten Universitäten sowie von Mentor/-innen, die über die Lernplattform Einblicke in den Fortschritt der Projektteams erhalten und ihnen beratend zur Seite stehen.

NEWS | Europe 100 Jahre Frauenwahlrecht in Deutschland

The origin of the suffragette movement lies not only in the right to vote, but also in the very basic exclusion of women from legal acts.

Before 1918, women were not considered legal entities. One example was the so-called gender guardianship: Women were not considered capable of acting per se, but had to be represented by a man. First by their fathers and later by their husbands, or, if they were not married, by a close relative.

Women in Germany no longer wanted to accept this. Before WWI, the suffragette movement was still optimistic due to initial successes.

The outbreak of the war, however, pushed them into the background, but once the war was over, the movement picked up momentum again – and it was stronger than ever. Towards the end of the war the suffragettes considered themselves close to their long-awaited goal.

Introduction of women’s right to vote in Germany In his Easter message in 1917, the German emperor Wilhelm the II. promised democratic reforms – including the right to vote. However, he did not mention anything about the right to vote for women. Activists were outraged by this omission and they were quickly back on the front line. On November 12th, 1918, the legal basis for women’s suffrage was created. This put an end to a decade-long process in Germany in which the moderate and radical middle class as well as the proletarian women’s movement had fought with activism, petitions, and assemblies for women’s rights. In a proclamation of the Council of the People‘s Representative on November 12th, 1918, it says: “All elections for public must henceforth be conducted under the same, secret, direct, and general electoral law open to all male and female persons of at least 20 years of age by virtue of the proportional election system.” A milestone for the women’s movement.

The law from 1918 was central for the women’s fight for equality, however, the wording of article 109, section 2 of the Weimar Constitution still sounded hesitant: Men and have the same civil rights, women in principle. “One could assume: Hey, I they have the same civil rights and duties “in principle”, that means they are equal. Not even close. “In principle” in a legal mindset always means that there are exceptions and those exceptions were interpreted quite extensively”, says legal historian Anna Katharina Mangold.

Complete equality – de jure Only in 1949 was this law revised in the German Constitution. Article 3, paragraph 2 of the constitution determines that men and women are equal. During the early 1990s, the following sentence was added: The state promotes the effective enforcement of equal rights for women and men and works towards the elimination of existing disadvantages.

This second sentence clearly shows that it is not enough to grant the same rights, but that it is necessary to actively enforce them as spelled out in the constitution. And that is basically the stage we are in right now”, according to Mangold.

Even 100 years after women were allowed to participate actively in political life, their struggle for social equality is far from over.

Der Ausbruch des Krieges ließ diese jedoch in den Hintergrund rücken, erst nach Beendigung nahm die Bewegung wieder Fahrt auf - und sie war lauter denn je. Die Kämpferinnen für das Frauenwahlrecht sahen sich kurz vor Kriegsende unmittelbar vor ihrem langersehnten Ziel.

Einführung des Frauenwahlrechts in Deutschland In seiner Osterbotschaft im Jahr 1917 stellte der deutsche Kaiser Wilhelm II. demokratische Reformen in Aussicht - auch im Wahlrecht. Doch über das Frauenwahlrecht verlor er kein Wort. Das empörte die Aktivistinnen und so waren sie wieder an vorderster Front. Am 12. November 1918 wurde die rechtliche Grundlage für das Frauenwahlrecht geschaffen. Dies setzte einen Schlusspunkt unter einen jahrzehntelangen Prozess in Deutschland, in dem bürgerlich-gemäßigte, der bürgerlich-radikale sowie die proletarische Frauenbewegung mit Aktionen, Petitionen und Versammlungen intensiv für das Frauenwahlrecht gestritten hatten. Im Aufruf des Rates der Volksbeauftragten von 12. November 1918 heißt es dann: „Alle Wahlen zu öffentlichen Körperschaften sind fortan nach dem gleichen, geheimen, direkten, allgemeinen Wahlrecht auf Grund des proportionalen Wahlsystems für alle mindestens 20 Jahre alten männlichen und weiblichen Personen zu vollziehen.“ Ein Meilenstein für die Frauenbewegung.

Das Gesetz von 1918 war zwar zentral für den Kampf der Frauen um Gleichberechtigung, doch der Wortlaut des Artikels 109, Absatz 2 der Weimarer Reichsverfassung klang noch zögerlich: Männer und Frauen haben grundsätzlich dieselben staatsbürgerlichen Rechte und Pflichten. „Man könnte meinen: Aha, wenn sie also ‘grundsätzlich‘ die gleichen staatsbürgerlichen Rechte und Pflichten haben, dann sind sie gleichberechtigt. Weit gefehlt. Denn ‘grundsätzlich‘ bedeutet in der juristischen Denkweise immer, dass es Ausnahmen gibt und diese Ausnahmen wurden sehr extensiv ausgelegt“, so Rechtshistorikerin Anna Katharina Mangold Komplette Gleichberechtigung - de jure Erst 1949 wurde dieser Artikel durch das Grundgesetz neu geregelt.

Artikel 3 Absatz 2 des Grundgesetzes legt fest, dass Männer und Frauen gleichberechtigt sind. In der ersten Hälfte der 1990er wird dieser Satz durch einen zweiten ergänzt: Der Staat fördert die tatsächliche Durchsetzung der Gleichberechtigung von Frauen und Männern und wirkt auf die Beseitigung bestehender Nachteile hin. „Dieser Satz 2 zeigt klar, dass es eben nicht ausreicht, formal gleiche Rechte zu gewähren, sondern dass sie auch tatsächlich umgesetzt werden müssen, wie das Grundgesetz es formuliert. Und das ist eigentlich die Phase, in der wir jetzt sind“, so Mangold.

Auch 100 Jahre nachdem Frauen zugestanden wurde, sich aktiv am politischen Leben zu beteiligen, ist ihr Kampf nach gesellschaftlicher Gleichstellung noch lange nicht beendet.

100 Years Women’s right to vote in Germany

Der Ausgangspunkt der Frauenbewegung war nicht nur das Wahlrecht, es ging auch um ganz grundlegende Ausschlüsse von Rechtshandlungsmöglichkeiten. Denn Frauen galten bis 1918 nicht von vornherein als Rechtssubjekte. Ein Beispiel war die sogenannte Geschlechtsvormundschaft: Frauen wurden per se nicht als geschäftsfähig angesehen, sondern mussten immer von einem Mann vertreten werden. Zunächst von ihrem Vater dann ihrem Ehemann, oder wenn sie nicht verheiratet waren, einem nahen Verwandten.

According to the Slow Food Movement, food has to be shared. It has to be clean. It cannot destroy the environment. You have to pay a fair price and a fair wage. The current food revolution is a sign of peace.

Ulrike Sitter started her company out of her own quest for delicious cold pressed oils she knew from growing up in Austria. Today, stuttering affects more than 80 million people worldwide – regardless of language, geography, or ethnicity. In the US, almost 4 million people are deeply affected by this huge impediment to conversation. Blockages and interruptions can occur in every communication experience and the avoidance of social settings is an often-observed consequence.

Therapy sessions cost between $100-$150 per hour and are usually not covered by health insurances. These financial strains in addition to the time-consuming nature of an in-person therapy lead to an overwhelmingly large percentage of people who stutter having no access to an evidence-based therapy method.

Speechagain, a German-founded company, set out to solve this problem by changing the way therapy is delivered. In order to do so, it developed the first solely online stuttering therapy which is based on a proven therapy method. Thanks to its cloud-based nature, the personal software is accessible anywhere and anytime, diminishing the need for long drives to a therapist. Speechagain’s patented technology is based on specialized speech recognition and feedback algorithms. This enables the software to evaluate the user’s exercise and give real time feedback – simplifying and mimicking the work of a therapist.

As Johanna Joch, Speechagain’s US-General Manager explains it: “It was about time that stuttering therapy could profit from digitalization and get a true remake. For that, we collected a library of sound characteristics with real speakers as a basis for artificial intelligence processing. The AI is now able to guide the user towards the correct way of getting into a word. In easy words: You see the word or sentence, you say it into the microphone and instantly see your voice curve. ►► What is your story? How did it start?

One of Speechagain’s co-founders and the therapeutic originator, Alexander Wolff von Gudenberg, drew from his own experiences as a person who stutters in his quest to help and change the lives of others with his speech impediment. Beginning in his early childhood, he got to intimately know the struggle of different therapies. Within just 20 years, he tried as many as 12 different therapies to improve his stutter. This experience led him to later found the Kassel Stuttering Institute, which is now one of Europe’s leading providers in stuttering treatment and the largest institution of its kind in Germany. In order to make the institute’s evidence-based therapy method available to everyone, he joined forces with the Berlin-based company builder Digital Health Factory. This collaboration brought together the experience of a high-quality therapy and a strong passion for digital and user-friendly healthcare innovation to create Speechagain. ►► What are the highlights of Speechagain’s success story?

Speechagain’s American success story started in 2017, when the startup was selected by the renowned German Ac-

celerator Tech program, an official program of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, to received assistance, training and coaching in New York City. The program enables promising German companies with innovative products to receive mentorship and market knowledge.

Later in 2017, Speechagain was selected the winner amongst over 100 participants and received the acclaimed Eugen-Münch Prize for practical applications of innovative health services. The prize included a grant of 20,000.00 EUR. That same year, Speechagain’s innovative concept struck the right chord of the digital health sector and received the acclaimed HIMSS Vienna Startup Slam award at the industry’s largest conference. In June 2018, Speechagain’s crowdfunding campaign together with the GLS Crowd successfully reached its goal of 600,000 EUR in record time, generating the necessary capital to further develop the therapy’s cloud-based solution and to finance the company’s launch in the US market. Additionally, Speechagain was one of the final three nominees for the German American Chamber of Commerce’s Newcomer of the Year Award 2018.

Speechagain’s nature of independent and affordable therapy access makes it an especially attractive tool for people with time constraints, a healthcare budget or just anyone with an affinity for modern technology.

The US healthcare system is built on certain services in the self-payer market to complete the “care bundle”. The resulting high costs of health services and, especially for stuttering treatment, a very restricted access to trained therapists called for a solution to fill the void: Not only are specialized therapists sometimes hard to find, particularly in more rural areas, but also do waitlists often have people waiting many months to even get an appointment. Therefore, Speechagain saw great potential with its low-cost, easily accessible therapy that can adapt to everyone’s personal schedule. The option to train in a comfortable, familiar setting also diminishes a stress point for many people who stutter who are often hesitant to interact publicly.

Rosaweiße Farbenpracht – die Kirschblüte in Amerika Im Frühjahr sieht man in den USA rosa, denn dann ist die Zeit der Kirschblüte. Die „cherry blossoms“ locken Besucher von nah und fern. Vielerorts finden sogar große Kirschblüten-Festivals statt.

Vor allem Japan ist für seine Kirschblüte im Frühjahr bekannt.

Doch auch in den USA können die weißen oder zartrosafarbenen Blüten der berühmten japanischen Kirschbäume in vielen Orten bewundert werden. So etwa in Washington D.C., wo alljährlich für vier Wochen im März und April das landesweit größte Cherry Blossom Festival stattfindet. Rund 1,5 Millionen Besucher zieht es zur Zeit der Kirschblüte in die Hauptstadt, um die Farbenpracht zu bewundern und an den zahlreichen Feierlichkeiten teilzunehmen.

Zelebriert wird nicht nur der Frühlingsanfang, für den die Kirschblüte steht, sondern auch die japanisch-amerikanische Freundschaft. Denn im Jahr 1912 schenkte der damalige Bürgermeister Tokyos der Stadt Washington gut 3.000 Kirschbäume. Die Idee dazu stammte allerdings nicht von ihm selbst, sondern von einer Amerikanerin: der reisebegeisterten Journalistin, Fotografin und Geografin Eliza Scidmore. Bei ihrem ersten Besuch des Landes der aufgehenden Sonne entdeckte sie ihre Liebe zur Kirschblüte – und kehrte mit der Idee zurück, ihre Heimatstadt Washington mit den japanischen Kirschen zu verschönern. und das Jefferson Memorial wurden erst Jahre später errichtet.

Lange Zeit stieß Scidmore mit ihrer Idee auf taube Ohren. Doch sie blieb über viele Jahre hinweg hartnäckig – und hatte schließlich Erfolg. Am 26. März 1912 kamen über 3.000 Kirschen aus Japan in der amerikanischen Hauptstadt an. Einen Tag später wurden die ersten zwei Bäume von der damaligen First Lady Helen Taft und der Frau des japanischen Botschafters, Vicomtesse Chinda, im Potomac Park gepflanzt.

Noch heute sind einige der ursprünglichen Kirschen erhalten. Die anderen wurden nach und nach ersetzt, um das Erbe weiterzuführen. Zahlreiche weitere Bäume kamen über die Jahre hinweg hinzu. Derzeit stehen rund 3.800 Kirschen allein auf der National Mall im Herzen von Washington.

ZEICHEN DES AUFBRUCHS Die Kirschblüte, im Japanischen „Sakura“ genannt, ist eines der bedeutendsten Symbole der japanischen Kultur. Sie steht für Schönheit und Aufbruch, aber auch für Vergänglichkeit. Ihre Blütezeit von Ende März bis Anfang Mai markiert einen alljährlichen Höhepunkt in der asiatischen Kultur, bei dem der Abschied des Winters und die Ankunft des Frühlings gefeiert werden.

Zu den Highlights des Events zählen die Eröffnungszeremonie am Warner Theatre am 23. März, das Blossom Kite Festival am Washington Monument am 30. März sowie die große Parade am 13. April. Im Anschluss an die Parade findet als „Fest im Fest“ außerdem das japanische Straßenfest Sakura Matsuri statt. Dort erwarten die Besucher nicht nur kulinarische Köstlichkeiten, sondern auch ein breitgefächertes kulturelles Angebot.

MACON, GEORGIA Sagenhafte 350.000 Yoshino-Kirschen gibt es in Macon, Georgia.

Was in den 1970er Jahren als Zeitvertreib eines Hobbygärtners startete, ist heute ein wichtiger Teil der Stadtidentität. Zelebriert wird der Blütenrausch mit dem International Cherry Blossom Festival, das dieses Jahr vom 22. bis 31. März seine Pforten öffnet. Schon Wochen vorher finden allerdings Events rund um die rosafarbene Kirschblüte statt. So etwa die Pink Poodle Exhibition am 1. Februar oder das Cherry Blossom Car Painting am 2. März.

NEW YORK Die Kirschblüten sind auch in zahlreichen Parks in New York zu bewundern, etwa im Central Park oder im Washington Square Park.

Am schönsten zeigt sich die Blütenpracht im Botanischen Garten in Brooklyn. Dort findet am Wochenende vom 27. und 28. April 2019 auch das Sakura Matsuri statt, bei dem mit einem reichhaltigen Programm die japanische Kultur gefeiert wird.

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE Rund 1.000 japanische Kirschen sind in Nashville beheimatet. Das feiert die Stadt mit dem eintägigen Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival am 13. April 2019. Das Highlight des Events: der kostenlose Cherry Blossom Walk entlang des Cumberland River in Downtown Nashville.

SALEM, OREGON Auch in Salem findet alljährlich ein Kirschblütenfest statt – dieses Jahr am 16. März. Neben Live-Musik und Bühnen-Shows erwartet die Besucher unter anderem auch eine japanische Tee-Zeremonie und natürlich der Blick auf die 151 Akebono-Kirschbäume, die die Oregon State Capitol Mall säumen.

KIRSCHBLÜTE IN DEN USA Der Höhepunkt der Blütezeit der japanischen Kirsche fällt meist auf Mitte März bis Ende April, je nach Region. Je wärmer es ist, desto früher beginnt und endet die Blüte.

Der zartrosafarbene Traum hält nur rund zehn bis 14 Tage an.

Kein Wunder: Im Alltag sprechen sie in der Regel die Sprache ihres Gastlandes, und sogar, wenn sie Zuhause deutsch sprechen, bleibt das Lesen und Schreiben meist auf der Strecke. Nur wenige haben die Möglichkeit in den Ballungszentren deutsche Auslandsschulen zu besuchen.

Luckily there are summer camps where kids receive German lessons for several weeks in a row to improve their language skills.

This has a few advantages: On one hand, the long summer break in the US can be used in a productive and meaningful way. On the other hand, learning or improving a language is often much easier for children when they are not in their usual environment. In camp they are spending time with many peers who are facing the same challenges. In addition, most camps are in the D-A-CH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), which means kids are immersed in their host country’s culture and language all day long. Also, the general activities are offered in German which helps to acquire vocabulary in a playful way.

Zum Glück gibt es Summer Camps, in denen Kinder und Jugendliche mehrere Wochen am Stück Deutschunterricht bekommen und ihre Sprachkenntnisse verbessern können. Das hat gleich mehrere Vorteile: Zum einen können die sehr langen amerikanischen Sommerferien sinnvoll genutzt und verplant werden. Zum anderen fällt das Sprachenlernen den Kindern und Jugendlichen in der Camp-Atmosphäre häufig sehr viel leichter als Zuhause in gewohnter Umgebung. Denn dort sind sie nicht nur mit anderen Gleichaltrigen zusammen, die vor ähnlichen Herausforderungen stehen. Viele Summer Camps finden außerdem im deutschsprachigen Raum statt – die jungen Teilnehmer sind also rund um die Uhr von der deutschen Sprache und Kultur umgeben. Auch die vielen Aktivitäten werden auf Deutsch angeboten und somit wird Vokabular spielerisch erlernt.

What makes German, Austrian and Swiss people come to America? What do they love about the country and what do they miss about home? In each issue, we will introduce a German-speaking immigrant or expat.

In this issue: the Photographer Karsten Staiger.

On a freezing cold day in New York, I met photographer Karsten Staiger in his office near Penn Station where I was able to witness a very special family reunion.

Karsten’s brother, Alexander was visiting New York for the first time in almost two decades.

The two share a moving family story and during the exciting conversation that ensued I’m sure not only myself, but also Alexander learned some interesting things about his brother’s life and work in New York City.

You arrived in New York in 1995 - did you intend to stay from the very beginning?

At that time I literally was ready to leave Germany for a while. After I had quit my graphics design studies in Stuttgart, I planned to go to Rome where I had already applied for a scholarship as I actually wanted to become a painter. While I was waiting to see if I was accepted, I traveled to New York with a friend – and immediately fell in love with the city.

What did you do when you got to New York?

I started painting and sold my first pictures fairly quickly. But I had to go back to Germany one more time and then returned with 2 suitcases, a guitar, $500 in my pocket and the intention to stay. At first I entered and left the U.S. as a tourist, which went well for a while, until autumn of 1998,

when an immigration officer urged me to adjust my residence status sooner than later. My girlfriend at the time was with me in the cab and on the way from the airport to the city, we spontaneously decided to get married. However in October 1998, I was busy preparing my first exhibition at the German Consulate General so we pushed it until December 1998 when we finally got married.

What fascinates you about New York?

What inspires you as an artist?

I grew up in a small village in the Black Forest and never really fit into the quite structured way of life there. In New York, I felt I was able to truly be myself for the first time. I could reinvent myself, learn a new language, and I didn’t have a country I needed to identify with ... But I never became

an American citizen and am still proud to be German and European.

Do you think that you would have had the same success if you had stayed in Germany?

I don’t think so, although success is relative, of course. I have a different perspective of myself than other people do. I live in "crazy worlds" and get to meet many famous people, but I’m still just Karsten. I am clear about who I am and where I come from. I am grateful for my roots.

I can imagine that today, as an artist, it is more important than ever to sell not only your work but also yourself as a person.

Are you comfortable with that?

It is still hard for me to sell myself and I always hope that my work speaks for itself.

LIFELINES | Lebenslinien Luckily, I have a lot of contacts now and established a certain name for myself in the industry, so I’m always busy. Over the years a lot of projects have come to me via recommendations which I love.

Is that how you came about your big project with the band Foreigner?

Yes, a friend of mine already worked with Mick Jones, the founder of Foreigner, on a project with a full orchestra in Switzerland.

A few weeks later I, too, was on my way to Lucerne and later on tour in Germany. In the past few years I was lucky to experience a lot of new things such as touring with a rock band and documenting them on camera, video and images - which means a lot to me.

Alexander, while you are here, let me ask you: Could you already see Karsten’s artistic talent when he was a kid? Was his talent fostered?

Alexander: Karsten always had a pen in his hand and was drawing things and designed logos, but as a kid you don’t necessarily realize a special talent in your brother. That was just who he was ...

Karsten: My talent wasn’t fostered, because our family situation was difficult.

Our parents died early. We were separated and forced to grow up in different families and were hardly allowed to see each other. So, in a sense, I lost my brother, too. Getting myself out of that place, coming to terms with my own story and transforming it into creativity – that was not an easy road, but creativity also helped me through difficult times. For years, I tried to maintain contact with Alexander, but several people put themselves between us and at some point I had to let him go. We are getting to know each other better again now and are working on putting the past behind us.

Karsten, what are your main projects right now?

I'm always working on “New York Love Story”, (→ www.newyorklovestory.com), a collection of pictures from the rooftops of New

York. I rarely take rooftop pictures right now, but I have accumulated so much material and I plan to turn it into a movie eventually. Apart from that, I am very busy with the documentation and other projects for Foreigner. There is also a lot of material that needs to be processed. Another project I’m involved in is called “The Way of the Rain” (→ www.thewayoftherain.org).

You took pictures from over 100 rooftops in Manhattan. Was that sometimes dangerous? Do you have a few favorites?

Dangerous … yes, of course, but it depends whom you are asking. I’m very “present” when I’m on a rooftop, happy and free.

There are a few buildings and situations I like to think about - like making it onto some rooftops where generally no-one else gets access to or some situations

few people like to be in voluntarily - like hanging out in a window washer’s rig on the 65th floor.

Where is your art currently on display?

A large part of my installations are still on display at 28 Liberty in Manhattan, however, some of them have been brought up to the new restaurant MANHATTA on the 60th floor. I’m also working on a digital wall and planning an exhibit in Germany.

Du bist 1995 nach New York gekommen hattest du von Anfang an vor zu bleiben?

Ich bin damals regelrecht von Deutschland abgehauen. Nachdem ich mein Grafikdesign Studium in Stuttgart abgebrochen hatte, wollte ich eigentlich nach Rom und hatte mich dort für ein Stipendium beworben, denn ich wollte eigentlich malen. Während ich auf die Entscheidung wartete, bin ich mit meinem Freund erstmal nach New York und habe mich sofort in die Stadt verliebt.

WWW.KARSTENSTAIGER.COM An einem eiskalten Tag in New York treffe ich den Fotografen Karsten Staiger in seinem Büro in der Nähe der Penn Station - dabei durfte ich ein Familientreffen der besonderen Art beiwohnen. Karsten’s Bruder Alexander war gerade zu Besuch und das zum ersten Mal seit fast 20 Jahren.

Die beiden teilen eine bewegte Familiengeschichte und es ergab sich ein spannendes Gespräch bei dem nicht nur ich sondern auch Alexander ein paar interessante Dinge über seinen Bruder und dessen Leben und Schaffen in New York erfahren haben.

Was hast du dann zunächst in New York gemacht?

Ich habe erstmal gemalt und auch relativ schnell die ersten Bilder verkauft. Ich musste aber noch einmal nach Deutschland zurück und kam dann kurz darauf mit 2 Taschen, einer Gitarre und 500 Dollar in der Tasche und mit der Absicht zu bleiben wieder zurück. Zunächst bin ich als Tourist ein- und ausgereist, was eine Zeit lang gut ging, bis mir irgendwann bei der Einreise im Herbst 1998 dringend nahegelegt wurde meinen Aufenthaltsstatus zu regeln.

Meine damalige Freundin war mit mir im Taxi und auf der Fahrt vom Flughafen in die Stadt haben wir spontan beschlossen zu heiraten. Im Oktober1998 war ich dann sehr beschäftigt meine erste Ausstellung im Deutschen Konsulat vorzubereiten und im Dezember 1998 haben wir geheiratet.

Was fasziniert dich an New York? Was inspiriert dich als Künstler?

Ich bin im Schwarzwald in einem kleinen Städtchen aufgewachsen und habe in die dortige recht strukturierte Lebensweise nie so wirklich reingepasst. In New York konnte ich das erste Mal wirklich ich selbst sein. Ich

konnte mich neu erfinden, eine neue Sprache lernen, ich hatte keinen Staat, mit dem ich mich identifizieren musste ... Allerdings bin ich nie Amerikaner geworden und bin nach wie vor stolz Deutscher und Europäer zu sein.

Meinst du, dass du den gleichen Erfolg gehabt hättest, wenn du in Deutschland geblieben wärst?

Ich denke nicht, obwohl Erfolg natürlich relativ ist. Ich habe eine andere Perspektive über mich selbst als andere Leute mich sehen.

Ich lebe in “crazy worlds” und komme mit vielen berühmten Leuten in Kontakt, aber ich bin immer noch der Karsten. Ich bin mir klar darüber wer ich bin und wo ich herkomme …

Ich bin sehr dankbar über meine Wurzeln.

Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass es als Künstler heutzutage wichtiger ist denn je, nicht nur seine Arbeit zu verkaufen, sondern auch sich selbst. Wie ist das bei dir?

Es fällt mir nach wie vor schwer mich selbst zu verkaufen und ich hoffe immer, dass meine Arbeit für sich selbst spricht. Zum Glück habe ich inzwischen viele Kontakte und einen gewissen Namen in der Branche, so dass ich immer beschäftigt bin. Das schöne ist, dass seit einigen Jahren vieles über Empfehlungen läuft.

Bist du auch so an dein großes Projekt mit der Band Foreigner gekommen?

Ja, ein Freund arbeitete mit Mick Jones, dem Gründer der Band an einem Orchester Projekt und ich wurde hinzugezogen. Ein paar Wochen später war ich auf dem Weg nach Luzern in der Schweiz und anschließend auf Tournee in Deutschland. In den letzten paar Jahren durfte ich viel Neues erleben, wie es HEIMAT abroad | SPRING 2019 | 29

ist mit einer Rock Band auf Tour zu sein und sie mit Film und Foto zu dokumentieren.

Alexander, wenn ich dich schon mal hier habe, eine Frage an dich: Konnte man bei Karsten schon als Kind sehen, dass er künstlerisches Talent hat? Ist das gefördert worden?

Alexander: Karsten hatte schon seit ich mich erinnern kann einen Stift in der Hand und hat gezeichnet und Logos entworfen, aber als Kind nimmt man das nicht so als besonderes Talent wahr. Das war einfach Karsten.

Karsten: Ich bin nicht gefördert worden, denn unsere Familiengeschichte war nicht einfach. Unsere Eltern sind früh verstorben.

Leider haben sie uns Kinder getrennt und wir sind in verschiedenen Familien aufgewachsen und durften uns kaum sehen. Ich habe also auch meinen Bruder verloren.

Und da wieder rauszukommen, deine eigene Geschichte zu verarbeiten und in Kreativi30 | HEIMAT abroad | SPRING 2019

tät umzuwandeln - das war nicht einfach, die Kunst hat mir aber auch durch schwere Zeiten geholfen. Ich habe jahrelang versucht den Kontakt zu meinem Bruder zu halten, aber einige Leute stellten sich zwischen uns und ich musste ihn irgendwann gehen lassen. Wir lernen uns gerade wieder neu kennen und arbeiten die Vergangenheit auf.

Was sind momentan deine Hauptprojekte?

Ich habe natürlich New York Love Story (→ www.newyorklovestory.com), eine Kollektion von Bildern von den Dächern von New York. Momentan mache ich noch selten Bilder, aber ich habe so viel Material und plane daraus einen Film zu produzieren. Weiterhin bin ich sehr beschäftigt mit Filmen und Projekten für Foreigner. Da gibt es noch sehr viel Material, das verarbeitet werden muss. Und ich bin involviert mit dem Projekt The Way of the Rain (→ www.thewayoftherain.org).

Du bist auf über 100 Dächern unterwegs gewesen für deine Bilder. War das manch-

mal gefährlich? Gibt es ein ein paar Lieblingsplätze?

Gefährlich … ja mit Sicherheit, es kommt darauf an wen du fragst. Ich bin sehr präsent auf den Dächern, frei und happy. Ich habe einige Gebäude, an die ich gern zurückdenke … das aufregendste ist der Zugang auf Gebäude, auf die normalerweise niemand raufkommt oder freiwillig hinauf will, wie zum Beispiel mit einem Fensterwäscher an einem 65-stöckigen Gebäude zu hängen.

Wo kann man deine Bilder sehen?

Einige Bilder meiner großen Installation sind noch bei 28 Liberty und ein Teil davon inzwischen im MANHATTA Restaurant im 60. Stock und ich arbeite gerade an einer Installation für eine digitale Wand. Weiterhin plane ich für dieses Jahr auch eine Ausstellung in Deutschland.

Um auf Nummer Sicher zu gehen, sollte man sowohl ein Gesundheitszeugnis als auch den Nachweis über eine Tollwutschutzimpfung mit sich führen. Letztere wird auf der Webseite der amerikanischen Botschaft in Deutschland als obligatorisch angeführt, obwohl die amerikanische Gesundheitsbehörde CDC auf ihrer Webseite schreibt, dass dieser Nachweis für Hunde aus Deutschland nicht notwendig ist.

Es kann also sein, dass niemand diese Papiere sehen will, da Deutschland und Westeuropa als Gebiet mit sehr niedrigem Tollwutrisiko gelten. Jedoch kann es wirklich nicht schaden, diese Nachweise bei sich zu haben, besonders wenn man auf übereifrige Grenzkontrolleure trifft. Du ersparst dir so jede unnötige und zeitraubende Diskussion.

schen übertragbaren Krankheiten hat, als „free of diseases communicable to man“ ist. ► Die Bescheinigung über die Tollwutimpfung (Rabies Vaccination Certificate) ist ebenfalls ein Nachweis in englischer Sprache. Sie muss den Namen des Hundes, das Impfdatum (Date of Vaccination) und das Ablaufdatum der Immunisierung (Expiration date) ausweisen sowie die Unterschrift des Tierarztes tragen. Das Ablaufdatum ist allerdings nicht notwendig, wenn die Impfung nicht länger als zwölf Monate vom Tag der Ankunft in den USA zurückliegt. Hunde, die zuvor noch nie gegen Tollwut geimpft wurden, müssen mindestens 30 Tage vor der Einreise geimpft worden sein.

Vom Verlobtenvisum

zur GREENCARD

Wer einen Amerikaner heiraten und mit ihm in den USA leben möchte, muss ein Verlobtenvisum (auch K1-Visum genannt) beantragen. Nach erfolgreicher Antragstellung kannst du in die USA einreisen und hast 90 Tage Zeit, um zu heiraten. Nach einer weiteren Wartezeit von rund sechs Monaten erhältst du die Arbeits- und Reiseerlaubnis sowie deine Greencard, die auf zwei Jahre befristet ist.

Der Antrag auf ein K1-Visum 1. SCHRITT – ANTRAGSTELLUNG Zuerst müssen du und dein Partner alle Dokumente sammeln, die beweisen, dass ihr eine echte und aufrichtige Absicht habt, zu heiraten. Alles wird in einen großen Briefumschlag gepackt: Urlaubsfotos mit Beschreibungen, Screenshots von WhatsApp-Nachrichten, Hotelbuchungen, Flugtickets, Postkarten – was immer zeigt, dass ihr ein Paar seid, und beweist, dass ihr euch in den vergangenen zwei Jahren persönlich gesehen habt. Zudem muss jeder von euch schriftlich erklären, wo und wann ihr euch kennengelernt habt. Zu diesen Nachweisen kommen außerdem Kopien von (übersetzten) Geburtsurkunden und Reisepässen, sowohl vom Antragssteller (die deutsche Person) als auch vom Partner. Weiterhin müsst ihr Passfotos mitliefern, die nicht älter als 30 Tage sein dürfen, ein polizeiliches Führungszeugnis, Steuerbescheide beider Partner sowie einen Überweisungsschein von rund 535 US-Dollar. Hinzu kommen verschiedene Dokumente, die du auf der Internetseite vom USCIS herunterladen und ausfüllen musst, und die darstellen, wo du innerhalb der vergangenen fünf Jahre gelebt und gearbeitet hast. Der „Affidavit of support“ darf auch nicht fehlen, unterschrieben vom amerikanischen Partner, dass er für alle Kosten aufkommt, solange du noch keine Arbeitserlaubnis in den USA hast.

Achtung: Hast du in der Vergangenheit bereits eine Zeit im Ausland verbracht, solltest du entweder ein polizeiliches Führungszeugnis aus diesem Land beantragen, oder nachweisen, dass du nicht länger als 394 Tage in dem jeweiligen Land gelebt hast. Hast du alles beisammen, mache am besten Kopien von allem, bevor du es abschickst. So bist du auf der sicheren Seite, falls das Päckchen in der Post verlorengehen sollte.

2. SCHRITT – NOTICE OF ACTION Rund zwei Wochen nachdem du das Päckchen abgeschickt hast, bekommst du die NOA1, die erste von zwei „Notices of Action“ vom USCIS. Das ist eine Bestätigung, dass das USCIS ein Profil des Angtragstellers angelegt hat und nun der ganze Prozess in Gang gesetzt wird. Die NOA2 ist die Bestätigung, dass der Antrag genehmigt wurde. Es ist schwer, hier eine genaue Bearbeitungsdauer anzugeben, denn sie variiert stark von Antragsteller zu Antragsteller.

So kannst du Glück haben und deine NOA2 bereits nach drei Monaten erhalten; es kann aber auch ein knappes Jahr (und manchmal sogar noch länger) dauern. Wenn du Pech hast, bekommst du einen RFE zugesendet, einen „Request for Evidence“. Der bedeutet, dass du weitere Informationen nachreichen oder bestimmte Unterlagen neu einreichen musst, zum Beispiel weil etwas bei den Formalia nicht stimmt. Leider zieht ein RFE eine enorme Verzögerung der Antragsbearbeitung nach sich, da der Antrag wieder ganz unten auf dem Stapel beim USCIS-Officer landet.

Achtung: Seit September 2018 kann der USCIS einen Antrag direkt ablehnen, ohne einen RFE auszustellen. Fehlt ein Nachweis oder ist eine Kopie unleserlich, ist es möglich, dass der Antragsteller sofort abgelehnt wird. Er hat dann keine Möglichkeit mehr, fehlende Unterlagen nachzureichen. Sieh deshalb lieber alle Dokumente dreimal durch, bevor du sie abschickst!

3. SCHRITT – MEDICAL EXAM Hast du die NOA2 endlich in der Hand, musst du einen Termin bei einem staatlich akkreditierten Arzt für eine ärztliche Untersuchung machen. Auch das geht relativ schnell. Du kannst oft schon innerhalb von zwei Wochen einen Termin bekommen; die Untersuchung

EXPAT-Spezial selbst dauert etwa eine Stunde. Auf der USCIS-Seite findest du eine Liste aller erforderlichen Impfungen, die du vor dem Arzttermin aufgefrischt haben musst.

4. SCHRITT – INTERVIEW IM AMERIKANISCHEN GROSSKONSULAT Sobald du die ärztliche Untersuchung hinter dich gebracht hast, kannst du einen Termin im amerikanischen Großkonsulat buchen.

Meist sind innerhalb der kommenden zwei bis drei Wochen Termine zu erhalten. Das Interview selbst dauert in der Regel rund 30 Minuten – häufig musst du allerdings eine Wartezeit einrechnen, die auch mal mehrere Stunden betragen kann. Während des Interviews musst du unter anderem noch einmal alle Dokumente vorzeigen sowie einen Eid ablegen, dass du ehrliche Absichten hast und nicht nur um der Greencard willen heiratest. Auf die Frage „Why do you want to move to the U.S.?” sollte man antworten: „Because I want to marry my long-term partner.“ Alle anderen Antworten könnten als verdächtig gelten und der Antrag kann im schlimmsten Fall an Ort und Stelle abgelehnt werden. Hast du alle Fragen zur Zufriedenheit des Konsulatbeamten beantwortet, bekommst du von diesem hoffentlich den erlösenden Satz “Your visa is approved.”

5. SCHRITT – KOFFER PACKEN! Rund zwei Wochen nach dem erfolgreichen Interviewtermin erhältst du deinen Reisepass mit dem eingeklebten Visum per Post.

Dieses K1-Visum ist 90 Tage gültig. Innerhalb dieser Zeit musst du in die USA einreisen und heiraten. Da es keine feste Zeitschiene für den ganzen Prozess gibt, du also nicht weißt, wann die NOA2 kommt oder wann der Konsulatstermin ist, ist es sehr schwierig, vorausschauend zu planen und zum Beispiel die Wohnung und den Job zu kündigen. Vielleicht kannst du mit deinem Arbeitgeber und deinem Vermieter sprechen und die Situation erklären. Nutze die Wartezeit und verbringe viel Zeit mit Freunden und Familie; sortiere Kleidung und Gegenstände aus, die du nicht mehr benötigst; und sieh mit Optimismus und Aufgeschlossenheit deinem neuen Lebensabschnitt entgegen. Vielleicht kann dein Partner auch mit einem leeren Koffer aus den USA nach Deutschland kommen, damit ihr euch gemeinsam von deiner Heimat verabschieden könnt und du mehr Gepäck am Flughafen aufgeben kannst.

6. SCHRITT – WELCOME TO THE UNITED STATES Mit einem K1-Visum im Reisepass verläuft die Einreise in aller Regel problemlos. Der Security-Officer wird dich fragen, warum du in die USA einreisen möchtest. Antworte, dass du heiraten möchtest, und du wirst, wie auch beim Konsulatstermin, mit einem Lächeln durchgewunken. Auf deinem örtlichen Standesamt kannst du einen Termin für die Heirat ausmachen und deinen neuen Namen festlegen. Mit der Heiratsurkunde und deinem K1-Visum kannst du nun eine Sozialversicherungsnummer beantragen und ein Bankkonto eröffnen. Dann musst du noch einmal ein Päckchen für den USCIS fertig machen und zeigen, dass du innerhalb von 90 Tagen geheiratet hast. Etwa drei bis neun Monate später wirst du zu deinem „biometrics“-Termin eingeladen. Dort werden deine Fingerabdrücke genommen und ein Foto gemacht. Und nach ein bis zwei Monaten

erhältst du deine EAD, die „Employment Authorization Card“, die dir erlaubt, arbeiten zu gehen. Gemeinsam mit der EAD bekommst du deine „Travel Authorization“, mit der du das Land verlassen und deine Familie besuchen darfst. Die Zeit, bis du deine EAD in der Hand hältst, mag dir sehr lang vorkommen, aber nutze einfach die Gelegenheit, um in Ruhe deine neue Heimat kennenzulernen. Mach lange Erkundungstouren durch deine neue Stadt, besuche Kurse in deiner örtlichen Bibliothek oder nimm eine ehrenamtliche Tätigkeit auf. Rund drei bis sechs Monate nach Erhalt der EAD wirst du eine weitere Einladung zu einem Termin bekommen – diesmal für die Greencard. Zu diesem Termin müssen beide Ehepartner erscheinen und eine Reihe persönlicher Fragen beantworten. Auch das kann ganz unterschiedlich ablaufen und kann zwischen 20 Minuten und fünf Stunden dauern. Hast du das auch geschafft, dann erhältst du wenig später die Greencard in der Post und bist nun ein „permanent resident“.

10 TIPPS für einen überzeugenden Lebenslauf in den USA Wer als Neuankömmling oder langjähriger Expat in den USA lebt und Nicht-Muttersprachler ist, dem fällt das Schreiben von Texten im Geschäftsenglisch oft schwer. Das gilt vor allem auch für den Lebenslauf, bei dem es zusätzlich auf einige Besonderheiten zu achten gilt. Wir erklären, worauf es ankommt.

Ein überzeugender Lebenslauf ist das A und O bei der Bewerbung. Doch wie kannst du sicher sein, dass dein Lebenslauf optimal gestaltet ist? Wenn du auf Google Rat zum Schreiben eines Lebenslaufs suchen, findest du über 2,3 Millionen Treffer!

Um dir das Scrollen durch unzählige Artikel zu ersparen, haben wir zehn wichtige Tipps zusammengestellt, die du beachten solltest, wenn du deinen amerikanischen Lebenslauf erstellst.

Füge KEIN BEWERBUNGSBILD hinzu – dazu dient dein LinkedIn-Profil.

Während Bewerbungsbilder in den meisten europäischen Ländern Standard sind, sollten sie in den Vereinigten Staaten in keiner Bewerbungsmappe enthalten sein. Der Hintergrund: Arbeitgebern in den USA ist es untersagt, Entscheidungen zur Einstellung aufgrund von Hautfarbe, Geschlecht, Alter oder ähnlichem zu treffen. Dein Bewerbungsbild sollte jedoch grundsätzlich auf deinem LinkedIn-Profil zu sehen sein.

Füge KEINE PERSÖNLICHEN INFORMATIONEN wie Familienstand oder Staatsbürgerschaft hinzu, aber gib genaue Kontaktdaten an.

Auch hier ist es Arbeitgebern in den USA untersagt, Entscheidungen zur Einstellung aufgrund von persönlichen Informationen zu treffen. Daher sollten Angaben wie Anzahl der Kinder, Familienstand und Nationalität weggelassen werden. Du solltest jedoch deine professionelle E-Mail-Adresse angeben (vorzugsweise eine, die deinen Namen enthält) sowie deine Telefonnummer, wobei eine Handynummer bevorzugt wird.

Versende die endgültige Fassung nicht ohne eine ZWEITE MEINUNG eingeholt zu haben und bitte jemanden, Korrektur zu lesen.

Grammatik- oder Rechtschreibfehler sollten unbedingt vermieden werden. Daher solltest du einen Muttersprachler oder eine Person mit Muttersprachler-Kompetenzen bitten, deinen Lebenslauf sorgfältig zu überprüfen. So kannst du ungeschickte Aussagen, Interpunktionsfehler und andere Feinheiten korrigieren lassen, die du sonst übersehen hätten.

VERMEIDE SCHUBLADENDENKEN durch Zielsetzung – gib stattdessen einen Überblick.

Wenn deine angegebene Zielsetzung im Lebenslauf nicht mit der Zielvorgabe des potenziellen Stellenangebots übereinstimmt, signalisierst du dem zuständigen Manager, dass du kein großes Interesse an der Stelle hast. Ziele begrenzen und verringern deine Chancen als Bewerber. Stattdessen solltest du das Interesse der Leser mit einem aufschlussreichen professionellen Überblick wecken, der sich auf dich persönlich, deine Stärken, Fachkenntnisse und die erbrachten Leistungen erstreckt.

VERMEIDE LANGE LISTEN der Verantwortungsbereiche. Hebe stattdessen deine Wertigkeit durch erbrachte Leistungen hervor.

Eine Auflistung von zehn Dingen, die mit „verantwortlich für“ beginnen, solltest du vermeiden, wenn du deine beruflichen Erfahrungen anführen willst. Kommuniziere stattdessen, welche Leistungen du erbracht hast und welche Auswirkungen diese hatten (etwa „reduzierte Kundenbearbeitungszeit von drei Tagen auf einen Tag durch Umgestaltung wichtiger Prozesse“ oder „Ersparnisse von 800.000 US-Dollar für das Unternehmen durch Neuverhandlung von Lieferantenverträgen“). Nenne nicht nur die Tätigkeiten selbst, sondern unterstreiche, wie sie Ergebnisse lieferten, Änderungen beeinflussten, Kunden zugutekamen usw.

Wenn du nicht weiterkommst, tausche dich mit einem vertrauenswürdigen Kollegen, Freund oder einem Profi aus, der dir mit einer unvoreingenommenen Perspektive helfen kann, deine Erfahrungen auf eine Weise zu kommunizieren, die für potenzielle Arbeitgeber interessant ist.

Gib Geschäftszahlen nicht in Euro, Schweizer Franken oder Yen an, sondern rechne INTERNATIONALE WÄHRUNGEN IN US-DOLLAR um.

Wenn du wichtige Zahlen angibst (etwa den Betrag des von dir verwalteten Budgets oder die von dir gesteigerten Umsätze), solltest du diese immer in US-Dollar angeben, damit die Personen, die deinen Lebenslauf lesen, auch ein Gefühl für die Höhe der Beträge haben. Die Bewerbungen werden oft von den Managern in den USA überflogen; es ist daher wichtig, dass sie schnell und einfach zu verstehen sind. Manager sollten keine Währungsumrechnungen vornehmen müssen.

Denke auch daran, den Kontext für die Kennzahlen anzugeben, um die Auswirkungen effektiver zu veranschaulichen. So ist zum Beispiel die Angabe „Kosteneinsparung von 35 Prozent“ bedeutungslos ohne einen relativen Start- oder Endpunkt, da 35 Prozent 3.000 US-Dollar oder drei Millionen US-Dollar darstellen können.

Sende deinen Lebenslauf NICHT ALS WORD-DOKUMENT, sondern als PDF. Die Funktionen in Word sind begrenzt. Einige Schriftarten, Aufzählungszeichen, Absatzformatierungen und andere Details (etwa Buchstaben mit Akzenten) sehen zwar beeindruckend aus, können aber nach dem Senden nicht übertragen werden - insbesondere, wenn der Empfänger die Bewerbung auf einem mobilen Gerät oder mit einer älteren Word-Version öffnet. Sofern nicht anderweitig vom potenziellen Arbeitgeber erwünscht, sende deinen Lebenslauf deutlich mit deinem Namen versehen als PDF-Datei, um sicherzustellen, dass der Empfänger die gleiche Formatierung sieht wie du.

Für den potenziellen Arbeitgeber ist dein Lebenslauf oft der erste Eindruck von dir; ZEIGE WER DU BIST. Indem du deinen Wert hervorhebst und zeigst, wie du zur Verbesserung und zum Wachstum anderer Unternehmen beigetragen hast, machst du dem Zielunternehmen deutlich, dass du auch dort einen starken, positiven Einfluss ausüben kannst. Wenn du dir darüber hinaus auch die Zeit nimmst, deinen Lebenslauf nach den US-amerikanischen Normen aufzusetzen und sorgfältig Korrektur zu lesen, dann hast du gute Chancen in die zweite Runde des Bewerbungsverfahrens zu kommen.

Gib Beschäftigungen aus der Vergangenheit nicht im Präsens an, sondern gib nur die AKTUELLE BESCHÄFTIGUNG IM PRÄSENS an.

Es gibt zwar Ausnahmen, aber in der Regel sollten abgeschlossene Beschäftigungen in der Vergangenheitsform, und alles Aktuelle in der Gegenwartsform angegeben werden.

Vermeide lange, ausschweifende Formulierungen und Absätze. Verwende stattdessen EINHEITLICH FORMATIERTE AUFZÄHLUNGSPUNKTE. Ein Lebenslauf sollte keine langen Absätze enthalten, da diese schwer zu lesen sind, besonders auf mobilen Geräten. Außerdem können wichtige Informationen in ausschweifend formulierten Aussagen verloren gehen. Optimiere die Lesbarkeit und den Effekt mit klaren, stichpunktartigen Angaben.

GLSC Schreibwettbewerb 2019 Die GLSC (German Language School Conference) lädt SchülerInnen aller deutschen Sprachschulen in den USA ein, am GLSC Schreibwettbewerb 2019 im Rahmen des Deutschlandjahres mit dem Motto “Wunderbar together” teilzunehmen.

40 Years of Working Together for German Language Education 2018 GLSC Professional Development Conference in New York On November 10, 2018 a record-breaking number of teachers, school board members, principals, speakers and sponsors came together for the 38th GLSC Conference at the German House in New York.

The GLSC is the national organization dedicated to the needs of German language schools in the U.S. The weekend started with a warm welcome reception at the Austrian Consulate on the evening before the conference. The conference itself featured twenty workshops covering a wide variety of topics on German language education and administrative concerns. Key presentations focused on the trending subjects of MINT und Medien.

MINT (Mathematik, Informatik, Naturwissenschaft und Technik) is the equivalent of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in the U.S. One of the many highlights of the event was the

keynote by Ulla Schmidt, member of the German Bundestag and the Subcommittee for Foreign Cultural and Educational Policy.

She spoke about the role of German language schools in the U.S. and answered various questions about the German Language Diploma and financial aid for schools.

The full day event ended with a reception at the German Consulate General to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the GLSC. The non-profit organization was founded in 1978 with encouragement from the consulate and a mission to support German language schools.

Karneval Fans from as far away as Berlin and Cologne at the GAMGA Gala in Las Vegas For more than 30 years, the annual gala of the German-American Mardi Gras Association (GAMGA) has attracted German Karneval fans from all parts of the U.S. and Canada, all determined to keep the fun and colorful tradition of German-style Karneval alive. This year, the legendary Rio Hotel & Casino served as the venue for the 2-day event where the Californian “Karnevalsjecken” were joined by delegations from Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, Ohio, Wisconsin, Canada, and Germany!

After the traditional GAMGA Board Meeting and Delegates Meeting, the first event, the Costume Ball, kicked off the GAMGA weekend in style on January 18. More than 700 guests in very creative and colorful costumes had gathered and cheered GAMGA President Holger Claus, the GAMGA Board and Elferrat who crowned this year’s GAMGA Prince and Princess, “Seine Tollität Prinz Karl I. und Ihre Lieblichkeit Prinzessin Tina I.” – both members of the San Diego Karneval Group.

As every year, the dance shows presented by the various clubs, especially their youth groups, were spectacular. Amongst the first-time performers were members of the Los Angeles Turners Youth Dance Group, a recently formed group of six girls between the ages of 5 and 12. After only 3 months of practice with their trainers Delia, Irma Hast and Petra Schurmann, these young enthusiastic dancers awed the audience with their take on “Viva Colonia.” The event was a great inspiration to them since they had

the chance to watch experienced dancers from the Phoenix Club Youth Dance Group who celebrates their 50th anniversary this year, and the almost professional dancers of the Anaheim Karnevalsgesellschaft and the San Diego Youth Dance Group as well as the Canadian dancers of the Karneval Groups from Sarnia and Edmonton.

The following evening, it was time for the traditional festive “Prunksitzung” (Pomp Session) when all Karneval “Royals” (Karneval Prinzenpaare) in their exquisite robes and richly adorned hats march in, surrounded by their “subjects,” all dressed in the official (and often elaborate) attire of their organization, according to the Rheinish Karneval tradition. A special highlight this year was the attendence of the Karneval Prince and Princess from Berlin and the performance of the „Bergheimer Dreigestirn 2017/2018“ and their take of the traditional Karneval song „Eimol em Lääve“ (Once in a lifetime).

Throughout the evening, the guests flocked

to the large dance floor and danced enthusiastically to the music of “Bluebirds,” a popular show band from Southern California.

Time flies when you have fun, and soon Las Vegas could take a deep breath of relief and see the “Karnevalsjecken” leave for their home turf to revel in more Karneval fun until Ash Wednesday, the end of the ‘Fifth Season.’ Looking at the growing number of youth dance groups at the GAMGA Gala, who do not only learn traditional German dances but also stay in touch with their heritage and the German language through fun German Karneval songs, I realized once again the important contribution which the GAMGA Gala and all Karneval Groups make to keep German culture alive in America.

FUN FACTS ABOUT GERMAN KARNEVAL

Karneval goes by many names depending on what area of Europe you are from: Fasching, Karneval, Fastnacht, Fasnet, Carnival and Mardi Gras and are pre-Lenten festivities celebrated in grand style in mostly the predominantly Catholic regions of the Germanspeaking countries.

The Rhineland has its Karneval, Austria, Bavaria and Berlin call theirs Fasching, and the Swiss Germans celebrate Fastnacht or Fasnet. Carnival and Mardi Gras are celebrated by countries like Brazil and in the United States, especially in New Orleans.

Karneval in Germany began in the 16th century to allow commoners to mock the monarchy and politicians without fear of retribution, however, it really took off in the 19th and 20th centuries. Therefore many “official” Karneval costumes copy some of the official uniforms and dresses from that period.

Easter in the USA - Ostern in

There are many different Easter traditions around the world. Germany and the USA have some traditions in common, but others are quite typical for each country.

Easter is the highest celebration of Christians and remembers the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Easter has two origins: the pagan spring festival called Ostara and the Jewish Passover, also called Pesach during the Middle Ages. The word remains closely tied to its Indo-European origins in most languages, with German (Ostern) and English being notable exceptions. An Anglo-Saxon church leader named it Eostro (dawn) for the first time, since Christians were supposed to keep watch until dawn during the Easter night. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the spring full moon in spring and is therefore a so-called “floating holiday.”

►► EASTER FIRE Since the 16th century, in the night of Holy Saturday to Easter Sunday, a traditional Easter fire is built in front of the church. The Easter candle is lit and will burn until the Ascension Day.

►► EASTER LAMB The risen Jesus is often portrayed as a lamb, and it is a tradition in many parts of Germany to bake Easter lambs.

►► PARADES & BONNETS Many cities in the U.S. celebrate with Easter parades, typically on Easter Monday. The parade on 5th Avenue in New York is an absolute highlight. People dressed in colorful clothes roam the streets in flower-laden carriages and celebrate in exuberance. Every year, the imaginatively decorated hats, the so-called “Bonnets”, are an eye-catcher.

►► EGG-THROWING This game exists in different variations, depending on the region. In Bavaria, the egg is traditionally put in a woolen bag and repeatedly thrown until the shell breaks.

The winner is whose egg survives the longest without breaking. In other parts of Germany, Easter eggs are thrown over the roof of a house and a partner is supposed to catch the egg. It is said that the house will now be protected from lightning.

►► EASTER EGG ROLL Since 1878, the Easter egg roll for children takes place in the garden of the White House in Washington. It's about rolling a hard-boiled egg down the hill as fast as you can. The only permitted assistance is using a wooden stick.

Each participant receives a wooden egg signed by the President and the First Lady. ►► EASTER EGG HUNTS Many churches, clubs, and schools organize Easter egg hunts for all ages. Everyone can join and try to find as many candy-filled plastic eggs as possible.

►► EASTER BUNNY The hare has always been a symbol of fertility because of its high number of offspring.

He was the favorite animal and symbol of the pagan fertility goddess Eostre; the Eostre festival took place in her honor. The Christians took over the symbol of the hare for Easter—a sign of life and rebirth. It is believed that German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania introduced the idea of an egg-laying rabbit called “Easter Bunny” to the United States. The children of the German immigrants built nests in which the Easter bunny could lay his colorful eggs.

Today, instead of nests, colorful ornate baskets are often used to gather Easter eggs, chocolate, and other sweets. ►► EASTER EGGS Worldwide, the egg has always had a special meaning for spring and rebirth. In the 5th century, the church recognized the egg as a symbol of resurrection. ►► BOILING AND DYING EGGS The first Easter eggs were dyed in the 13th century. People used to decorate the eggs by tying a leaf to it and boiling it in onion juice.

The leaf left a white spot on the egg. Later, during the Great Lent, it was forbidden to eat eggs and meat. However, as the chickens continued to lay eggs, people boiled the eggs in order to preserve them. To distinguish them from the raw eggs, they colored them.

Deutschland und die USA haben einige Traditionen gemeinsam, andere sind ganz typisch für das jeweilige Land.

Ostern ist das höchste Fest der Christen und erinnert an die Auferstehung Jesus Christus, dem Sohn Gottes. Ostern hat zwei Wurzeln: Zum einen das heidnische Frühlingsfest namens Ostara und zum anderen das jüdische Passah-Fest, das im Mittelalter auch Pessach genannt wurde. Das Wort bleibt in den meisten Sprachen an seine indo-europäischen Ursprünge gebunden, wobei Deutsch und Englisch (Easter) bemerkenswerte Ausnahmen sind. Ein angelsächsischer Kirchenführer nannte es zum ersten Mal Eostro (Morgengrauen), da die Christen in der Osternacht bis zum Morgengrauen wachen sollten. Ostern wird am ersten Sonntag nach dem Frühlingsvollmond gefeiert und ist daher ein sogenanntes “bewegliches Fest”.

►► DAS OSTERLAMM Der auferstandene Jesus Christus wird oft als Lamm dargestellt; daher werden in vielen Teilen Deutschlands Osterlämmer gebacken. ►► EIERWERFEN Eierwerfen gibt es in verschiedenen Formen, je nach Region. In Bayern wird das Ei traditionell in ein Wollsäckchen gesteckt und auf einer Wiese von sich geschleudert. Der Wurf wird so lange wiederholt, bis die Eierschale kaputt ist. Sieger ist der, dessen Ei am längsten heil bleibt und die meisten Würfe übersteht.

In anderen Teilen Deutschlands werden die Eier über das Hausdach zu einem Partner geworfen, der das Ei fangen muss. Es heißt, das Haus solle so vor einem Blitzeinschlag geschützt werden.

►► EASTER EGG ROLL Seit 1878 findet im Garten des Weißen Hauses in Washington das sogenannte Eierrollen für Kinder statt. Dabei geht es darum, ein hartgekochtes Ei so schnell wie möglich den Hügel hinunter zu rollen. Einzig erlaubtes Hilfsmittel ist ein Holzstock. Jeder Teilnehmer bekommt ein vom Präsidenten und der First Lady signiertes Holz-Ei. ►► EASTER EGG HUNTS Viele Kirchen, Vereine und Schulen veranstalten große Easter Egg Hunts für Groß und Klein. Jeder kann mitmachen und die mit Süßigkeiten gefüllten Plastikeier suchen.

GEMEINSAME TRADITIONEN ►► DER OSTERHASE Der Hase ist seit jeher ein Symbol für Fruchtbarkeit, da er besonders viel Nachwuchs bekommt. Er war das Lieblingstier und Symbol der heidnischen Fruchtbarkeitsgöttin Ostara; ihr zu Ehren fand das Ostara-Fest statt.

Die Christen übernahmen das Symbol des Hasens für das Osterfest – ein Zeichen für Leben und Wiedergeburt. Es wird vermutet, dass deutsche Einwanderer, die sich in Pennsylvania niedergelassen haben, die Idee eines eierlegenden Hasens namens “Osterhase” in die USA einführten. Die Kinder der deutschen Einwanderer bauten Nester, in denen der Osterhase seine bunten Eier legen konnte.

Heute gibt es statt Nester oft bunte, verzierte Körbe, in der Ostereier, Schokolade und andere Süßigkeiten gesammelt werden. ►► OSTEREIER Weltweit hat das Ei schon immer eine besondere Bedeutung für den Frühling und die Wiederkehr des Lebens gehabt. Im 5. Jahrhundert erkannte die Kirche das Ei als Symbol für die Auferstehung an. ►► EIER KOCHEN UND FÄRBEN Bereits im 13. Jahrhundert wurden die ersten Ostereier gefärbt. Zu Beginn des Frühlings verzierten die Menschen Eier, banden ein Blatt darauf und kochten sie in Zwiebelsaft ein. Nach dem Kochen blieb auf dem Ei eine weiße Stelle in Form eines Blattes zu sehen.

Später war es während der Fastenzeit vor Ostern verboten, Eier und Fleisch zu essen. Da die Hühner aber trotzdem weiter Eier legten, kochten sie die Leute, um sie haltbar zu machen. Um sie von den rohen Eiern zu unterscheiden, färbten sie diese ein.

DANK does not only offer German classes for kids and adults but also regular exhibits in its upstairs gallery and museum, an elegant atmosphere at the “Sky Bar” on the top level and even a Olympic-size lap pool in the lower level.

Regular events like “Kulturküche” with local German-American chefs, Stammtisch Stammtisch, German movie nights, and „Kaffeeklatsch“make this a wonderful example of how a many decades-old German-American cultural organization can adjust to modern times and be incredibly

DEUTSCHER OSTERZOPF (EASTER BREAD)

This recipe is loved by our German and American friends and very easy to bake. Whether you make it into a straight braided bread or a wreath is absolutely up to you.

It’s very easy to make, but you need to have patience to let it rise properly.

Timeline: 20 minutes dough preparation, 1-2 hours rising, 10 minutes shaping, 20 minutes raising, 20-30 minutes baking.

INSTRUCTIONS

INGREDIENTS

1. Add the flour and sugar into a large mixing bowl and create a little trough in the middle.

2. Pour about half of the lukewarm cream (or milk) into that trough.

3. Sprinkle the yeast onto the milk, mix in a little of the flour and let rest for about 10 minutes.

4. Add the two eggs and the egg white and the remaining cream (or milk).

5. Start kneading the dough in the mixer.

6. Knead for about 10 minutes. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky but if it is too sticky and can’t hold a shape, add a little more flour.

7. Shape the dough to a ball and put it back into the bowl. Then cover the bowl with a damp kitchen towel and let stand at a warm place for 1 – 2 hours or until it has almost doubled in size.

8. Quickly knead by hand and separate intp 3 even sized spheres.

9. Let rest again for about 5 minutes – this will make the shaping and braiding a lot easier.

10. Shape each dough into a string.

11. Place the strings next to each other and start braiding from the middle to one end, then turn it around and braid to the other end.

12. Optional: Shape the braided bread into a circle and work the ends into each other.

13. Mix the egg yolk with the tablespoon of milk and brush it evenly all over the bread.

14. Preheat the oven to 350°F. 15. Give it another 20 minutes to raise again – makes the bread more fluffy and light.

16. Bake for 20 – 30 minutes (depending on your oven).

30 Jahre friedliche Revolution Palmengekrönte Säulen schmücken das Innere der Nikolaikirche in Leipzig. Eine steht allerdings vor dem Gebäude – in Erinnerung an die friedliche Revolution im Jahr 1989: Jeden Montag trafen sich in der Nikolaikirche Andersdenkende, um gegen die vorherrschenden gesellschaftspolitischen und wirtschaftlichen Zustände in der DDR zu protestieren. Im Herbst 1989 verließen sie den Schutz der Kirche und zogen mutig durch die Leipziger Innenstadt. Woche für Woche schlossen sich der Bewegung mehr Menschen an. Die Montagsdemonstrationen läuteten das Ende der DDR und der deutschen Teilung ein. 30 Jahre nach der friedlichen Revolution begibt sich Check-in-Moderator Lukas Stege auf Spurensuche durch Leipzig.

22 Mitglieder zählt das Kabinett des neuen brasilianischen Präsidenten Jair Bolsonaro, darunter sind gerade einmal zwei Frauen.

Frauen in der Politik? Das entspricht eher nicht dem Gesellschaftsmodell der neuen rechtspopulistischen Regierung. Doch eine Handvoll Frauen im Bundesstaat Pernambuco trotzt dem Trend. Sie haben sich zusammengeschlossen, wollen die Politik umkrempeln und teilen sich seit Anfang des Jahres einen Sitz im neu zusammengesetzten Landesparlament.

Zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte Brasiliens wird damit in einem Landesparlament ein geteiltes Mandat eingeführt.

Nach ihrer erfolgreichen Wahl im Herbst 2018 fängt die Arbeit für die fünf Kämpferinnen jetzt erst so richtig an. Ihre Lobby sind Gewerkschaften, Menschenrechtsgruppen und Obdachlosenverbände.

Auch Kultur.21 reist nach Sachsen und besucht die Leipziger Buchmesse. Zum Frühjahrstreff der Literaturszene erwarten die Veranstalter mehr als 2.600 Aussteller, jeder fünfte kommt mittlerweile aus dem Ausland. Das Gastland Tschechien stellt unter dem Motto „Ahoj Leipzig!“ rund 60 Neuerscheinungen vor. Das Kulturmagazin trifft einige der tschechischen Autoren in Prag und Brünn und spricht mit ihnen über ihre Arbeit. Kostüme für Venedig Dem Zauber des venezianischen Karnevals ist Horst Raack 2003 zum ersten Mal erlegen.

Und diese Leidenschaft hat den Kostümschneider aus Enger bis heute nicht losgelassen.

Jedes Jahr macht er sich mit selbst entworfenen und geschneiderten Kostümen auf den Weg von der ostwestfälischen Provinz in die Lagunenstadt und nimmt dort am großen Wettbewerb „Concorso della Maschera più bella“ teil. Im Mai 2017 brachten Sympathisanten der Terrororganisation „Islamischer Staat“ (IS) die Stadt Marawi auf der philippinischen Insel Mindanao unter ihre Kontrolle. Die philippinische Armee brauchte fünf Monate, um die Stadt zu befreien. Angesichts der totalen Zerstörung Marawis schien der philippinische Staat unfähig zu sein, das eigene Territorium zu verteidigen. Militärisch wurden die Gefolgsleute des „IS“ zwar geschlagen, doch ein Propaganda-Coup für das „Kalifat“ war der zermürbende Häuserkampf gegen eine hochgerüstete und von den USA unterstützte Armee dennoch. Die Tatsache, dass die schwarze Flagge der Islamisten 154 Tage lang über Marawi wehte, könnte radikalen Kräften in der gesamten Region Auftrieb geben. Dampfen muss es!

Die E-Zigarette ist derzeit buchstäblich in aller Munde – für junge Leute ein Megatrend, für langjährige Raucher eine vermeintlich weniger schädliche Umstiegsmöglichkeit.

Doch eines ist nach wie vor wichtig: Es muss sichtbar dampfen! Und das wird durch einen Chemiecocktail aus Propylenglykol oder Glycerin erreicht. Geraucht werden kann auch weiterhin Nikotin. Doch daneben werden unzählige Aromastoffe, sogenannte Liquids, angeboten – in exotischen Geschmacksrichtungen wie Gummibärchen, Butterkuchen oder Wassermelone. Während die einen die E-Zigarette als gesunde Alternative propagieren, warnen Lungenärzte bereits vor möglichen Langzeitschäden. Darüber hinaus haben Studien ergeben, dass Dampfer schnell wieder zur Zigarette greifen und junge Menschen möglicherweise erst durch die E-Zigarette zu Rauchern werden.
