Dear Reader, On October 3rd, 2018 Germany celebrated the 28th anniversary of the German Unity Day. I had the honor to attend a commemorative event at the Loeb Boathouse, one of my favorite spots in New York City’s Central Park. About 2,000 guests from politics, business, science arts and culture joined senior consulate staff and invited dignitaries for a grand evening event. After a few conversations with some East Germans about their experiences before and right after the fall of the Berlin Wall I tried to remember where I was or what I did during that time as a teenager in West Germany. It was one of the most significant events happening during my lifetime right in my own country, however, for me personally the true significance only truly sunk in decades later. When the Berlin Wall finally came down on November 9th, 1989 I was 16 years young living a sheltered live in a Munich suburb. Yes, we heard that the wall was coming down, of course we knew that the regime was shifting and we were thrilled watching on TV how people in Berlin finally crossed the border changing the destiny of their lives … But for me as a teenager I had much more pressing issues to worry about: when is my next test, where is the best party, and who can I copy homework from, all while navigating my first relationship. Living far from the border in West Germany absolutely nothing tangible changed for me and my friends. Fast forward 25 years in New York City - a friend and I attended a screening at the German Consulate of the documentary “Das Wunder von Leipzig - Wir sind das Volk” (The wonder of Leipzig - We are the people) about the Monday demonstrations in Leipzig showing the events leading up to a spontaneous peaceful march of 80,000 people “fighting” for their freedom. The film shows the determina-

tion, lucky circumstances, acts of civil courage and controversial decisions that led to an end of a restrictive regime without violence. Only then and there did I begin to understand the magnitude of the event that allowed the will of the people to result in a peaceful revolution. No shots were fired while a whole regime crumbled within days. Lives significantly changed that day making room for new beginnings and bright futures for many, but also shattered existences of others who were part of the system and struggled with the challenges that came with free labor markets, democracy and freedom. After the movie screening my friend and I looked at each other in awe and disbelief with tears in our eyes. 25 years later, the magnitude of the event and it’s international consequences finally had sunken in. I asked her what she knew of the Monday demonstrations in Leipzig and what she remembered of the summer and fall of 1989. I was slightly relieved and slightly ashamed the same time, when she said “homework, tests, boyfriends, parties…. - and yes, far off in Berlin the wall came down”. Today we are building more walls again than we are tearing down, most of them invisible between communities, people, religions and countries. Germany and the US are looking back at several decades of friendship, mutual respect and prosperity which I’m sure most people on both sides would want to grow and continue. Many Germans - myself and most of our team included - have found a welcoming home in the US either as expats or immigrants and we are hoping to contribute just a teeny tiny bit by bridging our two cultures with our bilingual magazine HEIMAT abroad. THE DAY OF GERMAN UNITY On October 4th the Loeb Boathouse in Central Park was filled with diplomats, military and various dignitaries as well as representatives of German business, arts and culture in New York City to celebrate the Day of German Unity. The elegant event was hosted by the permanent representative of Germany to the United Nations Christoph Heusgens and the Consul General of Germany David Gill and their wives. The event was as usual very well attended and is a lovely opportunity to see many old and new faces in the ever changing German community in New York. Washington D.C also hosted a major event celebrating the day and officially kicking off the “Deutschlandjahr - Wunderbar together”. You can find more info on pages 20/21. PUBLISHER Gabi Hegan is originally from Munich and spent her “first” career in the hotel industry. After her daughter was born in 2009 she founded the NYC based community website www.citykinder.com and in 2017 the annual ICH BIN EXPAT FAIR. In 2018 she launched the new platform www.heimatabroad.com to reach and support German-speaking expats and residents nationwide. CONTENT Sarah Conlon grew up near Leipzig and calls sunny Southern Palatinate her adopted home. She has lived in New Zealand and Norway, and chose Boston as her second home in December 2017, where she now lives with her husband. After completing her Master’s degree in American Literature, Media, and Communication at the University of Mannheim, she lived in Connecticut as a journalist for 8 months to write for Das Pfalz Magazin from a small house on a lake. CO-PUBLISHER Petra Schurmann studied in Heidelberg before working for Bertelsmann AG in Germany and in California. In 2000, Petra and the journalist Alexander Hast founded the website www.german-world.com in L.A. to promote German culture in the US. In 2003 they added the bilingual print publication "German World Magazine". Since 2013, Petra has also been involved in the annual film festival "German Currents", and has been a supporter of the multi-language preschool "Kigala" as well as the Goethe-International Charter School in L.A. and the Steuben Parade in New York.

CONTENT Kathrin Schönberg studied in Cologne and Koblenz and taught elementary school for 10 years. Since 2008 she lives with her husband and 2 daughters in San José, CA. She loves living in the "Golden State”, but still misses Cologne, her family, friends and German bread. In 2015 she started her blog "Cöllefornia” where she takes a good look at the joys and challenges of being at home in two worlds. Kathrin taught German classes at her "Das Fliegende Klassenzimmer” for many years. Now she works at the GISSV in Mountain View and is excited to be a regular contributor to HEIMAT abroad.

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Juliane Tranacher was born in Lübeck. As a high school student she spent one year in Minnesota, exploring "America's heartland". After studying in Freiburg and Gothenburg (Sweden), Juliane moved to Berlin to work as an editor and communications manager in the financial sector. From 2015 to 2017 she lived in New York City with her husband, where they welcomed their first daughter. Currently Juliane resides in Hamburg with her family.

ENTERTAINMENT AND LIFESTYLE Stephen Fuchs is a first generation German-American, born in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up deeply involved in the local German community, he witnessed a generational shift that called for a reawakening of the German-American culture. To appeal to his generation and the ones that follow, Stephen started German Pulse, an online platform for Americans of German descent to discover the modern German culture. He still lives in the Chicago area and continues to play an active role in the German community.

American States, European Partnerships, and The Value of Clean Energy Collaboration

Recent decisions by the U.S. federal government have understandably diminished America’s reputation regarding renewable energy and climate awareness. What many outside the U.S. may not realize, however, is that American states have created their own policies in the absence of federal leadership. As a Massachusetts State Senator, I have been a proud advocate for clean energy in my state over the past two decades. In 2008, I sponsored the Global Warming Solutions Act, which requires Massachusetts to reduce CO2 emissions to 25% below 1990 levels by 2020 and 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. My colleagues and I in the legislature have adopted various measures since then such as An Act to Advance Clean Energy, which we passed this past July, to increase our offshore wind, battery storage, and renewable portfolio. We still have plenty of progress to make, but Massachusetts remains as dedicated as ever to transitioning into a clean energy future. Massachusetts is not alone. California is also fighting to achieve its own ambitious goals by requiring energy companies to generate 33% of retail electricity from renewable sources by 2020, and 50% by 2030. California’s $2.45 Trillion GDP accounts for 14.3% of the entire U.S. economy. If it was a country, its GDP would rank as the 5th largest economy in the world - above France, India, and the U.K. State progress has the potential to drastically reduce emissions and inspire others to upon economic opportunities. These state initiatives have been influenced in part by clean energy efforts in Europe. In the process of developing renewable opportunities for Massachusetts, I have explored clean energy initiatives in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Portugal, and Denmark. Partnerships between EU nations and state leaders have proven to be dynamic educational tools that generate valuable opportunities for collaboration. Constructive dialogue often leads to business partnerships and capital investments that benefit parties on both sides of the Atlantic. Business leaders, higher education institutions, financial establishments, and entrepreneurial developments all have crucial roles to play in our global clean energy transition. By working with state leadership and developing international partnerships, we can achieve our overall climate goals and, together, embrace a clean energy future.

Senator Marc R. Pacheco is President Pro Tempore of the Massachusetts State Senate. He is founding chair of the Senate Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change and co-chair of the Council of State Government’s Eastern Regional Conference’s Energy and Environment Committee. He is a Senate delegate to the New England Board of Higher Education and serves on the National Conference of State Legislature’s Task Force on Energy Supply. Tausende protestieren in Berlin gegen rechtspopulistische Politik

On an absurdly hot and sunny fall day, Berlin welcomed an estimated 240,000 people demonstrating against racism and calling for solidarity against the rise of far-right populism across Germany.

A 5-kilometer (3-mile) stretch of the capital city‘s center, from Alexanderplatz through the Brandenburg Gate to the Victory Column, had to be closed down to accommodate the huge parade, which was united under the hashtag #unteilbar (“indivisible“). The crowds were punctuated by 40 trucks mounted with loudspeakers, some delivering political messages, others pumping out music of all genres, including a Techno truck surrounded by semi-clothed dancers. The march was bookended by two concert events.

This decision was announced after the CDU had to accept very disappointing results at the state elections of Hesse where the CDU will continue to form a government with the Green Party but had to accept the big losses. Although Angela Merkel has always been convinced that the head of the governing party in Germany should also be the head of the Federal Government, she will not resign prematurely from her position as Federal Chancellor but fulfill her full term until 2021. This constellation, Merkel stated in a press release, had never existed in Germany but she considered this move the best solution for the party and the country right now. As of 2021, she would not seek any other political assignment either. It is a very dignified withdrawal from politics in well measured steps. The most powerful woman in Europe – retiring from it all. The member states of the European Union (EU) showed mixed reactions with regards to Angela Merkel’s decision. DAS ENDE EINER ÄRA Europa ohne Merkel – geht das? Es muss, denn Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel kündigte überraschenderweise am Montag, 29. Oktober, 2018 an, dass sie auf dem CDU-Bundesparteitag im Dezember nicht mehr für den Parteivorsitz kandidieren würde. Diese Entscheidung kam nach einem für die CDU enttäuschenden Ergebnis bei den Landtagswahlen in Hessen, wo die CDU zwar weiter mit den Grünen regieren kann, jedoch herbe Verluste hinnehmen musste. Und obwohl Angela Merkel immer die Meinung vertrat, dass der Vorsitz der Regierungspartei und Kanzleramt zusammen gehören, ist sie jedoch bereit, die Regierungsgeschäfte bis zum Ende ihrer Amtszeit 2021 zu führen. Diese Konstellation, so Bundeskanzlerin Merkel in einer Ansprache, habe es in Deutschland noch nie gegeben, aber sie halte es für das Beste. EU ON HIGH ALERT ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE: Stricter car emissions cut needed by 2030 European Union countries have agreed to pursue a 35 percent cut in emissions of new cars and vans by 2030, as part of global efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and limit global warming. Concern over a UN report on global warming released on October 8, 2018, led EU environment ministers to meet in Luxembourg, where they talked for more than 13 hours in search for a compromise. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report warned that the world was “running out of time” to avoid a „climate catastrophe“ and that it will need to take „unprecedented“ steps to avoid a dangerous rise in temperature.

Germany, which has large auto sector, backed an EU executive proposal for a 30 percent reduction in vehicle emissions by 2030, compared with 2021 levels. Berlin has warned that if targets are set too high, it would hurt exports and threaten jobs.

Jewish families in the U.S. who fled Nazi-Regime seek German passports As Brexit approaches, figures show that Germans who made Britain their home are increasingly applying for repatriation. The majority are the families of those who fled because they were persecuted by the Nazi regime. An increasing number of people living in the UK have applied for repatriation to Germany since the June 2016 referendum result for Britain to leave the EU, according to government figures. Individuals who were persecuted by the Nazis and their descendants made up the majority of those applying, said a recent report. Of the 3,731 applications since 2016, 3,408 referred to the German Constitution‘s Article 116. Under the article, former German citizens who were deprived of citizenship on „political, racial, or religious grounds“ — and their descendants — are entitled to have citizenship restored. Tens of thousands of Jews fled Germany for the UK before and during World War II. They included some 10,000 children who were evacuated as part of the so-called „Kindertransport” between December 1938 and August 1939, most of whom never saw their families again. SHARP RISE IN APPLICATIONS The number of people applying for repatriation increased significantly after the UK‘s Brexit referendum, according to figures published by the Funke Mediengruppe newspaper group. In 2015, there were only 59 applications, while in 2016 — the year the UK Brexit vote took place in June — there were 760. In 2017, 1,824 applied, and 1,147 applied in the first eight months of 2018. The Funke Mediengruppe figures were obtained in response to a parliamentary question from Germany‘s pro-business Free Democrats (FDP). Aside from Jews, many other groups fled Germany and the Nazi regime, including members of the Roma community, homosexuals and political opponents. ‚NOT SURPRISING’ According to FDP interior affairs spokesman Konstantin Kuhle, the development showed that many UK citizens were keen to retain „the benefits of European citizenship“ within the EU. „This is not surprising given the British government‘s chaotic Brexit negotiation line,“ Kuhle said, adding that the EU should not forget „that many people in the UK feel close to the EU.“ g Source: Deutsche Welle - DW.com

Jüdische Familien in Großbritannien, die einst vor den Nazis flohen, wollen nun den deutschen Reisepass zurück Je näher der Brexit rückt, desto mehr Menschen, die einst aus Deutschland flohen und nun in Großbritannien leben, stellen Anträge auf Wiedereinbürgerung in Deutschland. Beim größten Teil der Antragsteller handelt es sich um Familien, deren Vorfahren zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus verfolgt wurden und fliehen mussten. Seit dem Referendum vom Juni 2016, bei dem Großbritannien dafür gestimmt hat, die EU zu verlassen, hat die Zahl der Menschen, die die Wiedereinbürgerung in Deutschland beantragen, stark zugenommen. Laut einem aktuellen Bericht wurden die meisten Anträge von Personen, die von den Nationalsozialisten verfolgt wurden, und deren Nachkommen, eingereicht. Von den 3731 Anträgen, die seither eingegangen sind, wurden 3408 unter Berufung auf Artikel 116 des Grundgesetzes gestellt. Demnach haben „frühere deutsche Staatsangehörige“, denen die Staatsangehörigkeit aus „politischen, rassischen oder religiösen Gründen“ entzogen wurde, das Recht, die Staatsangehörigkeit wieder einzufordern. Dieses Gesetz betrifft ebenfalls ihre Nachfahren. Zehntausende deutsche Juden flohen vor und während des Zweiten Weltkrieges nach Großbritannien. BMW TO RECALL 1.6 MILLION VEHICLES WORLDWIDE OVER FIRE RISK

SPRUNGHAFTER ANSTIEG DER ANTRÄGE Der Anstieg der Anträge auf Wiedereinbürgerung hat nach dem Brexit-Referendum erheblich zugenommen, berichten die Zeitungen der Funke-Mediengruppe. Wurden 2015 lediglich 59 Anträge auf Wiedereinbürgerung eingereicht, so wurden 2016 bereits 760 Anträge gezählt. 2017 waren es 1824 und von Januar bis September diesen Jahres waren es 1147. On October 23, 2018, German carmaker BMW announced that it was expanding a recall to over 1.6 million vehicles worldwide due to possible fluid leaks that could result in a fire. BMW stated further that in some diesel vehicles coolant could leak from the exhaust gas recirculation module, part of the emissions reduction system. The leaks could combine with soot at high temperatures and lead to a fire. The Munich-based company had already decided to recall 480,000 vehicles in Asia and Europe after fires were reported in South Korea. No injuries were reported. Further examination led to an expansion of the maintenance action. The recall covers some vehicles made between 2010 and 2017; a company statement said that customers with affected cars would be contacted. Some 54,700 vehicles are affected in the U.S. and Canada.

BMW HOLT WELTWEIT 1,6 MILLIONEN FAHRZEUGE WEGEN BRANDGEFAHR ZURÜCK Am 23. Oktober 2018 gab die BMW-Geschäftsleitung in München bekannt, dass sie weltweit 1,6 Millionen Fahrzeuge zurückrufen, da bei diesen Brandgefahr durch austretende Flüssigkeiten bestünde. Dabei handelt es sich um das Kühlwasser, das – als Teil des Emissionsreduktionssystems - bei einigen Dieselmodellen durch die Auspuffanlage wieder zurück zirkuliert wird. Das Wasser könnte sich mit den Ablagerungen bei hohen Temperaturen verbinden und so ein Feuer auslösen. Der bayerische Autohersteller hatte sich schon entschlossen, 480.000 Fahrzeuge aus Asien und Europa zurückzurufen, als die ersten Brände gemeldet wurden. Verletzte gab es bisher nicht. Nähere Untersuchungen veranlassten den Autokonzern, die Rückholaktion weiter auszudehnen. Die Aktion betrifft Fahrzeuge, die zwischen 2010 und 2017 hergestellt wurden. Laut Konzernmeldung werden die jeweiligen Kunden kontaktiert. In USA und Kanada sind 54.700 Autos von der Rückholaktion betroffen.

STEUBEN PARADE Each September during German-American Friendship months New York hosts to a multitude of events celebrating German culture and the long-standing relationship between both countries culminating in the annual Steuben Parade.

Each year, on the third Saturday of September, the German-American Steuben Parade is held on Manhattan’s famous Fifth Avenue. The aim and purpose of the Parade is to provide Americans, including the nation’s statesmen, with a visual of the great role played by Germanic immigrants in the development of the United States. The Parade instills in all Americans with roots from German speaking

countries a deep-rooted sense of pride and accomplishment. The most recent census reveals that one in four Americans is of Germanic decent. In addition to many local groups, schools, businesses and organizations, there were 24 different groups from Germany and Switzerland marching this year. The parade is followed by the “Oktoberfest in Central Park” with well over 5,000 participants. On

the Friday beforehand the community get’s together for an elegant Gala Dinner to honor the Grand Marshalls and help the fundraising efforts for the parade. This year’s Grand Marshalls were reknown architect Helmut Jahn (above) and Dr. Peter Beyer. Next year the parade will take place on September 21st, 2019. Save the date!

Founded in 2008 by a group of motivated students, it is now the largest student-led conference in the U.S. As the GAC was celebrating its 10-year anniversary, I listened to inspiring discussions and ted talks on US-German relationships, politics, and innovations in academia and media. The annual ﬁlm festival GERMAN CURRENTS at the legendary Egyptian Theater in Hollywood has always been one of the highlights each fall for the German-American community and for fans of European cinema alike. This year’s edition presented by the Goethe-Institut L.A. in cooperation with its long-time partners American Cinemateque and Friends of Goethe as well as ARRI and media partner Deutsche Welle, offered an especially diverse and well-balanced selection of award-wining German movies. This is certainly in a large part thanks to the new Festival Director Lien Heidenreich-Seleme who has been also at the helm of the Goethe-Institut since March 2018.

While her predecessor Fareed Majari often chose a veritable audience shocker for the Opening Night, Heidenreich-Seleme opted for the quirky road movie “Magical Mystery or The Return of Karl Schmidt” which brought memories of danced through techno-raves of the 90ies back to the mind. With excellent acting by male lead Charly Huebner and female lead Annika Meier, who had come to L.A. to represent this tragicomedy directed by Arne Feldhusen, this was an entertaining kick off of the festival.

The opening night movie was followed by a party at the Egyptian Theater’s unique courtyard where guests enjoyed Warsteiner beer, Underberg and Asbach Uralt Brandy while noshing on yummy German specialties created by the restaurant Julie’s Alps in Thousand Oaks. The festival continued on Saturday with a showcase of German short ﬁlms and three feature movies, among them a real shocker, “Blue My Mind,” the directorial debut by Swiss writer-director Lisa Brühlmann (Winner of three Swiss Film Awards), and director Thomas Stuber‘s acclaimed “In the Aisles” (Best Actor German Film Awards), as well as

My favorite day was the third festival day which opened on a family-friendly note with a Kids’ Matinee showing “The Legend of Timm Thaler” followed by the highly acclaimed feature film “3 Days of Quiberon” about the last interview of famous actress Romy Schneider – excellently portrayed by Marie Baeumer. While the interview by German magazine “Stern” actually happened, the script and dialogues of the movie are mostly fictitious as German-Iranian director Emily Atef from Berlin explained during the Q&A after the movie. Baeumer copied the mimic, mannerism, inflection and accent of the late Austrian-born actress so well that I often caught myself thinking that I was looking at Romy Schneider herself. The following feature “The Silent Revolution” (Das Schweigende Klassenzimmer) was another excellent production telling the true story of a class of students in 1956 in East Berlin who showed support to the participants of the Hungarian Uprising in Budapest that year and suffered severe repercussions. With its message of celebrating civilian courage, this movie was a very timely choice with regards to the current political climate in the U.S..

The festival ended on a high note at the theater of the Ace Hotel in Downtown L. A. where the audience was invited to the US premiere of KREATUR, a movie about and by the highly acclaimed ballet company Sasha Waltz who also attended the premiere in person along with two of her producers and several of her dancers. In addition to the festival’s film programming, the annual filmmaker brunch presented in cooperation with GABA Film Initiative and this year sponsored by the Oscar-winning animation and special effects company PIXOMONDO, has become one of the highlights during the festival. This year, a tribute was paid to famous German actress Veronica Ferres who sat down with Hollywood Foreign Press Association member Dierk Sindermann for an extensive interview and talked about her new movie “Berlin, I love you” which will come out in the U.S..

The Centenary of the Founding of the Republic of Austria Austria celebrates the 100th anniversary of its founding on November 12, 2018. The military defeat in World War I resulted in the break-up of the Habsburg monarchy and the creation of an independent, much smaller state. The same day the new republic was proclaimed by parliament, women were granted general and equal suffrage, a critical step towards gender equality. As the Republic of Austria celebrates these positive events, it also commemorates more tragic moments in its history, in particular the “Anschluss” of Austria to Hitler Germany in March 1938 and the subsequent November pogroms of Jews, exactly 80 years ago. A majority of Austrians welcomed Adolf Hitler and more than 200,000 were cheering when he proclaimed the "Anschluss" of Austria to the "German Reich" on the “Heldenplatz” in the center of Vienna. Violent antisemitic acts followed immediately in the weeks after the “Anschluss”. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of the horrors of World War II. Two other noteworthy anniversaries are being remembered this year: 1948, when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the UN General Assembly; and 1968, the year of the "Prague Spring", which shed light on the fragility of the Soviet empire, eventually leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. As the former Austrian president Dr Heinz Fischer puts it: “All of these events are linked to and influence each other. It is important to know history in order to better understand these connections and, most importantly, you have to know the history of your own country in order to detect worrisome developments early.”

Today, Austria, like many other European countries, is experiencing a resurgence of nationalistic right-wing tendencies while dealing with the constant flow of migrants from Africa and the Middle-East. The current chancellor Sebastian Kurz from the ÖVP (Österreichische Volkspartei) formed a coalition government with the FPÖ (Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs), a party on the right edge of the political spectrum. The fact that Austria recently rejected the UN Migration Pact moves the country further to the right margins of the European Union and distances Austria from its partners in the international community. “WUNDERBAR TOGETHER” – THE YEAR OF GERMANAMERICAN FRIENDSHIP Beginning October 2018 and lasting through the end of 2019, the year of German-American Friendship will take place across the U.S. The campaign will feature over 1,000 events to convey a multifaceted image of Germany in the U.S. and to strengthen German-American ties. “Wunderbar together” is the motto of the Year of German-American Friendship which is organized by the German Federal Foreign Ofﬁce, the Goethe-Institut and the Federation of German Industries (BDI). Numerous events and projects in the ﬁelds of economics, politics, education, culture and science will be held all across the country. The initiative aims to raise people’s awareness about the importance of the continued transatlantic friendship between the U.S. and Germany. Especially in the face of the current politically charged time, marked by isolationism and protectionism and growing nationalism on both sides of the Atlantic,

it is necessary to highlight the strong ties. “We can feel that the U.S. and Europe are drifting apart. The nearly complete overlap of our values and interest that deﬁned the transatlantic relationship for more than two generations is waning,” announces the organizer of the Year of German-American Friendship. Therefore, it is high time to reassess the partnership, not to leave it behind, but to renew and preserve it. By organizing diverse events the campaign intends to focus together on transatlantic issues and to provide opportunities for people to experience how close Germany and America actually still are. “We want to have new conversations with Americans about the nature of our relations, and what we could make of them” explain the event organizers on their website. Furthermore, their ambition is not only to reach people in big cities as New York, Washington or Los Angeles, but also those in other parts of the country, where the coasts are far away and Europe is even further. In conclusion the event organizer adds: “If we can achieve this, then we will, indeed, be wunderbar together.”

The Striezel Market is one of the oldest and prettiest Christmas markets in Germany, named after the original Dresden Christmas stollen (traditional German fruit cake), the Striezel. The market is ceremoniously opened by powering the world’s largest Christmas pyramid at 46 feet high. There are many other highlights during the Dresden Christmas season: The fairytale house, the Christmas bakery, the gingerbread and the „Stollenfest”. TRAVEL | Reisen Der Striezelmarkt zählt zu den ältesten und schönsten Weihnachtsmärkten in Deutschland. Benannt ist er nach dem original Dresdner Christstollen, dem Striezel. Der Markt wird feierlich mit dem Drehen der 14 Meter hohen und damit größten Weihnachtspyramide der Welt eröffnet. Darüber hinaus gibt es noch viele andere Highlights in der Dresdner Weihnachtszeit: das Märchenhaus, die Weihnachtsbäckerei, das Lebkuchen- und das Stollenfest. Dabei wird am 8. Dezember ein riesiger Stollen vom Zwinger über Semperoper und Frauenkirche zum Striezelmarkt gebracht und dort feierlich angeschnitten und verteilt.

Die Veranstalter legen großen Wert auf Tradition und seit jeher gibt es hauptsächlich Handwerkliches zu erstehen. Ein besonderes Highlight ist der 30 Meter hohe Christbaum mit 2500 Lichtern.

About His New Role as Consul General in New York What brings Germans, Austrians and Swiss to America? What do they love about this country and what do they miss about their old home? In each edition we are excited to introduce interesting expats or emigrants. This time: David Gill, German Consul General of New York and former State Secretary and Head of the Office of the Federal President. David Gill held many different positions during his career: he grew up in Oberlausitz, as the son of a pastor and went on to study theology until he became Chairman of Normannenstrasse Citizens’ Committee at the headquarters of the Ministry of State Security (Stasi) and then Head of Administration and was later part of the Parliamentary Special Committee for the dissolution of the GDR Ministry of State Security/Office of National Security. After the reunification he was Spokesman and Head of Division of the Federal Commissioner for the Files of the State Security Service of the former GDR. Shortly after, he returned to academia to study law at the universities of Berlin and Philadelphia. After that he worked for the Federal Ministry of the Interior and with the Office of Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Berlin and was the Deputy Representative of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) to the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union for 8 years. The highlight of his career so far was State Secretary and Head of the Office of the Federal President from 2012-2107 in the Joachim Gauck administration. Since August 2017 he serves as Consul General in New York.

Mr. Gill, what brought you to New York? In my previous position as Head of the Office of the Federal President,foreign policy became more and more important to me and I enjoyed to grow, maintain, and strengthen relationships between Germany and other countries. That was one of the main impulses that led me to switch career paths to the Foreign Service.. It’s not too surprising that we ended up in a city in the US. In the past 20 years, I not only cultivated strong business relationships but also personal ones – my wife is American. What are your duties as consul general? Consulates have 3 main duties. First: regular consular services like visa applications, passport renewals and support with citizenship issues. Second: We talk about Germany and try to make our country more

accessible for Americans by explaining political developments and their reasons, and also to represent German economy and culture. And third, we try to understand America and paint a realistic picture for the political decision makers in Germany. The country is a lot more complex and multi-leveled than conveyed by the media. To demonstrate the complexity of your host country is one of the essential tasks of all diplomats in the Foreign Service. What’s a typical day for you? There is no typical day. And there is rarely a day when I spend the whole day in the office. There are just too many events and meetings I need to attend. It becomes very clear when you look at the past few days in my calendar: I gave the opening speech for the expansion of the German International

David Gill hatte bereits viele Ämter und Rollen inne: Aufgewachsen in der Oberlausitz als Sohn eines Pastors, studierte er zunächst Theologie, bis er 1990 Vorsitzender des Bürgerkomitees zur Auflösung der Zentrale des Ministeriums für Staatssicherheit in Berlin wurde. Nach der Wiedervereinigung war er als Pressesprecher der neugegründeten „Gauck-Behörde“ tätig. Wenig später ging er zurück an die Uni, um in Berlin und Philadelphia Jura zu studieren. Danach arbeitete er als Referent beim Bundesministerium des Innern und als Referent der Berliner Beauftragten für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit. Von 2004 bis 2012 war Gill als Stellvertreter des Bevollmächtigten des Rates der Evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland tätig. Den Höhepunkt seiner bisherigen Karriere bildete seine Arbeit als Staatssekretär und Chef des Bundespräsidialamtes unter Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck von 2012 bis 2017. Seit August 2017 ist Gill Generalkonsul des Deutschen Generalkonsulats in New York.

Herr Gill, was hat Sie nach New York geführt? In meiner früheren Tätigkeit als Chef des Bundespräsidialamts wurde mir die Außenpolitik immer wichtiger und es hat mir Freude gemacht, Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und anderen Ländern aufzubauen, zu pflegen und zu stärken. Das war einer der wesentlichen Impulse, die mich dazu bewogen haben, in den Auswärtigen Dienst zu wechseln. Dass es schließlich in eine Stadt in den USA gehen würde, lag aber auch nahe. Denn in den vergangenen 20 Jahren habe ich nicht nur beruflich enge Beziehungen zu Amerika gepflegt, sondern auch privat – meine Frau ist Amerikanerin. Welche Aufgaben haben Sie als Generalkonsul? Die konsularischen Vertretungen haben drei Hauptaufgaben. Erstens: die typischen konsularischen Dienste. Wir bearbeiten Visaanträge, stellen Pässe aus und helfen bei Fragen zur Staatsbürgerschaft. Zweitens: Wir dürfen von Deutschland erzählen und den Amerikanern unser Land greifbarer machen, indem wir politische Entwicklungen und deren Hintergründe erklären, aber auch über die deutsche Wirtschaft und Kultur sprechen. Und drittens versuchen wir, Amerika zu verstehen und für die Politik in Deutschland verstehbar zu machen. Das Land ist ja viel komplexer und vielschichtiger, als es die Medien gemeinhin vermitteln. Diese Vielschichtigkeit aufzuzeigen, ist eine wesentliche Aufgabe aller Diplomaten im Ausland. Wie sieht ein typischer Tag bei Ihnen aus? Den typischen Tag gibt es nicht. Und vor allem gibt es höchst selten einen reinen

Bürotag. Dafür finden viel zu viele Veranstaltungen und Termine statt. Das wird anschaulich, wenn man einen Blick in meinen Kalender der letzten Tage wirft: Ich habe eine Eröffnungsrede zu einem Erweiterungsbau an der Deutschen Internationalen Schule New York gehalten, war zum Abendessen beim Gouverneur von New Jersey eingeladen, hatte ein Treffen mit dem neuen Präsidenten des American Institut of Contemporary German Studies, war gemeinsam mit der Bundesvorsitzenden der Grünen bei einer Gedenkveranstaltung zu 9/11 und hatte die in New York ansässigen deutschen Journalisten zu einem Pressegespräch zu Gast. Zudem planen wir momentan zahlreiche Aktivitäten rund um das Deutschlandjahr. Auch dafür bin ich unterwegs. Würde ich nur im Büro sitzen und jeder Tag in etwa gleich aussehen, dann würde ich definitiv etwas falsch machen. Sie sind in der DDR aufgewachsen, einem Land, in dem ein offener Anti-Amerikanismus herrschte. Welches Bild hatten Sie persönlich von Amerika? Die Jugendlichen in der DDR unterschieden sich in ihren Wünschen und Vorlieben ja wenig von denen in Westdeutschland: Sie wollten Jeans tragen und Rock- und Pop-Musik hören. Sie waren genauso fasziniert vom amerikanischen Lebensgefühl wie die jungen Leute im Westen. Und im Wesentlichen wussten sie auch mit Propaganda umzugehen. Man darf nicht vergessen: Auch in der DDR schauten 80 Prozent der Bürger Westfernsehen. Für mich persönlich kam noch hinzu, dass ich nicht aus

LIFELINES | Lebenslinien School New York (GISNY), was invited for dinner by the governor of New Jersey, had a meeting with the new president of the American Institute of Contemporary German Studies, attended a memorial service for 9/11 together with the national chairman of the Green Party and held a press conference for New York based German journalists. In addition, we are currently planning numerous activities around the “Deutschlandjahr". That also keeps me on the move. If I just sat in my office with the same everyday routine, I would definitely be doing something wrong. You grew up in the GDR, a country which openly propagated anti-americanism. What image did you personally have of the United States? Young people in the GDR weren’t that different from their counterparts in the West when it came to their wishes and dreams: tnihey wanted to wear jeans and listen to rock and pop music. They were equally fascinated by the American way of life as young people in West Germany. And essentially, they knew how to deal with the constant propaganda. And don’t forget: about 80 percent of GDR citizens watched West German TV programs. Personally, I had the added benefit that I did not grow up in a typical GDR family. My father was a pastor in a small Protestant church, the “Herrnhuter Brüdergemeinde” (Herrnhuter community of brothers) which was founded in the 18th century in my home town and had also spread to North America. Even in the most restrictive times of the GDR regime, we always had visitors from all over the world, even from America. These personal encounters probably shaped the view of my country more than official propaganda. In the nineties you lived in Philadelphia to study law. What attracted you to the US at that time? During the GDR, America has always been the land of my dreams. When I had the chance to travel to the US with different transatlantic organizations in the nineties, I knew that I really wanted to live in this country at some point. With my studies in Philadelphia, 32 | HEIMAT abroad | FALL 2018

I was able to fulfill this dream. And on top of that, I was able to earn a Masters of Law –a degree that’s quite valuable in my field. What was your first impression of the country? I traveled to the US for the first time in 1991. And I have to admit, I was completely fascinated. I was very lucky to be invited for a 3 week round trip with the German Marshall Fund. During this trip, we got a glimpse into the multi-faceted layers of this country – the beautiful sides, but also the challenges: from the highly political Washington D.C., to the abundant green of Minnesota, the Golden Gate Bridge and to the colorful Bronx dealing with immense social problems a that time. These insights have remained with me since. Since 2017 you live in New York. What do you like most about this city? The diversity of the people who live here and the variety of the cultures who share this city. There is a rich cultural life and the architecture is quite fascinating. I have been living in New York for over a year now and could still just walk for hours through the city admiring the buildings and streets. And what have you learned to appreciate about Germany while living abroad? The social balance. Even though the divide between rich and poor grew in Germany as well, Germans don’t experience such drastic differences in income, health insurance, and education between the socio-economic classes or between city and country populations, which can be attributed to our social security system. That’s something we Germans can be very proud of. In America, the general conviction is that you can do anything if you work hard – no matter where you come from. When you look at your own life – how much of your professional success would you attribute to luck and coincidence and how much to hard work and dedication? Coincidences certainly play a crucial role in everyone’s life and career. Sometimes you are just at the right place at the right time. At the same time, I believe in the saying “von nichts kommt nichts” (trans:

nothing comes from nothing). Growing up in a parsonage in the GDR, for example, taught me a lot that helped me later in life. I learned to speak up, tackle issues head on, get involved and think politically. Also studying law – which I only started at age 26 by the way – definitely didn’t hurt my later career path. You grew up in a dictatorship and now you live in America, the self-proclaimed “Land of the Free”. What does freedom mean for you and what role does it play in your life? Freedom is the lifeblood of each emancipated human being. It is the absolute foundation for anyone who wants to shape and positively change society and the environment in which he or she lives. At the same time, I believe that even in situations of oppression, everyone can create a certain amount of freedom if you have strong personal beliefs and find like minded allies.

einer typischen DDR-Familie kam. Mein Vater war Pfarrer einer kleinen evangelischen Kirche, der Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine, die im 18. Jahrhundert in meinem Heimatort entstanden ist und auch in Nordamerika Verbreitung gefunden hatte. Selbst in tiefsten DDR-Zeiten hatten wir immer Besuch aus aller Welt, auch aus Amerika. Diese persönlichen Begegnungen haben meinen Blick auf das Land letztlich viel stärker geprägt als etwaige staatliche Propaganda. Sie haben in den Neunzigerjahren bereits ein Jahr in Philadelphia gelebt und Jura studiert. Was hat Sie damals an Amerika gereizt? Zu DDR-Zeiten war Amerika immer ein Sehnsuchtsland für mich. Als ich dann in den Neunzigerjahren die Chance hatte, die USA mit verschiedenen transatlantischen Organisationen zu bereisen, war mir klar, dass ich unbedingt einmal in diesem Land leben möchte. Mit meinem Studium in Philadelphia konnte ich mir diesen Traum erfüllen. Und obendrein auch einen Master of Law erwerben – einen Abschluss also, der für Juristen durchaus wertvoll ist. Wir war Ihr erster Eindruck von dem Land? Das erste Mal habe ich Amerika im Jahr

1991 bereist. Und ich muss sagen: Ich war rundum fasziniert. Ich hatte damals das große Glück, eine dreiwöchige Rundreise mit dem German Marshall Fund machen zu dürfen. Auf dieser Reise wurde uns das Land in all seinen Facetten gezeigt – mit den schönen Seiten, aber auch mit den schwierigen: vom politischen Washington über das grüne Minnesota und die Golden Gate Bridge bis hin zur bunten Bronx mit ihren damals großen sozialen Problemen. Diese Einblicke haben mich nie ganz losgelassen. Seit 2017 leben Sie in New York. Was gefällt Ihnen besonders an der Stadt? Die Vielfalt der Menschen, die hier leben, und die Vielfalt der Kulturen, die hier aufeinandertreffen. Es gibt ein breites kulturelles Angebot und die Architektur ist einfach faszinierend. Ich lebe nun schon seit über einem Jahr in New York und könnte noch immer stundenlang durch die Stadt laufen und die Gebäude und Straßenzüge bewundern. Und was haben Sie an Deutschland zu schätzen gelernt? Den sozialen Ausgleich. Auch wenn die Schere zwischen Arm und Reich in Deutschland weiter aufgegangen ist: Die

In Amerika ist das allgemeine Bewusstsein davon geprägt, dass man alles schaffen kann, wenn man nur hart dafür arbeitet – ganz gleich, woher man kommt. Wenn Sie Ihr eigenes Leben betrachten: Wie viel Einfluss hatten Zufall und Glück auf Ihren beruflichen Werdegang und wie stark beruhen Ihre beruflichen Erfolge auf Leistung und harter Arbeit? Zufälle spielen sicherlich auf jedem Lebensweg eine gewisse Rolle. Manchmal ist man einfach zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort. Gleichzeitig ist an der Redewendung „von nichts kommt nichts“ auch etwas Wahres dran. Dadurch, dass ich in einem Pfarrhaus in der DDR aufgewachsen bin, habe ich beispielsweise vieles gelernt, was mir auch später weitergeholfen hat. Ich habe gelernt, den Mund aufzumachen, Sachen in die Hand zu nehmen, mich zu engagieren und politisch zu denken. Auch mein Jurastudium – das ich übrigens erst mit 26 Jahren aufgenommen habe – hat mir sicherlich nicht bei meinem späteren Werdegang geschadet. Sie sind in einer Diktatur aufgewachsen und leben nun in Amerika, dem selbst proklamierten „Land of the Free“. Was bedeutet Freiheit für Sie und welche Bedeutung hat sie in Ihrem Leben? Freiheit ist das Lebenselixier eines emanzipierten Menschen. Es ist die absolute Grundlage für jeden, der die Gesellschaft und das Umfeld, in dem er lebt, mitgestalten und positiv verändern möchte. Zugleich glaube ich, dass man sich sogar in der Unfreiheit einen gewissen Raum von Freiheit schaffen kann, wenn man innerlich stark ist und einige Verbündete findet. Denn Schwangerschaft und Geburt können je nach Verlauf sehr kostspielig sein und viele Versicherungen wollen diese Kosten schlichtweg nicht tragen. Auch Reisekrankenversicherungen, die in der alten Heimat abgeschlossen wurden, übernehmen in der Regel keine Kosten, die durch Schwangerschaft und Geburt entstehen. Zum Glück haben viele Expats die Möglichkeit, in eine internationale Krankenversicherung aufgenommen zu werden, zum Beispiel die Allianz Worldwide Care. Diese Krankenversicherungen haben in der Regel ein sehr umfassendes Leistungsangebot – sind allerdings auch entsprechend preisintensiv.

FLUG UND EINREISE Wenn du schwanger umziehst, solltest du bedenken, dass Fluggesellschaften schwangere Frauen nur noch bis zu einer bestimmten Schwangerschaftswoche mitnehmen. Viele Airlines nehmen Schwangere ab der 34. oder 36. Woche nicht mehr mit. Manche Gesellschaften verlangen schon deutlich früher ein Attest, das deine Flugtauglichkeit bescheinigt. Bei Mehrlingsschwangerschaften ist das Mitfliegen oft bereits ab der 32. Woche nicht mehr erlaubt. Erkundige dich daher so rasch wie möglich über die Bestimmungen der jeweiligen Fluggesellschaft und nimm das Attest, wenn erforderlich, im Handgepäck mit.

MEDIZINISCHE BETREUUNG Während Frauen in den USA für Routineuntersuchungen zum gynecologist gehen können, übernimmt die medizinische Betreuung während Schwangerschaft und Geburt ein sogenannter OB/GYN. Die Abkürzung „GYN“ steht für „gynecology“, die Abkürzung „OB“ für „obstetrics“, was übersetzt soviel wie Geburtshilfe bedeutet. Der OB/GYN ist also nicht nur Gynäkologe, sondern zusätzlich auch auf dem Gebiet der Geburtshilfe – einschließlich der Durchführung von Kaiserschnitten – ausgebildet. Neben OB/GYNs bieten auch Hebammen (midwives) Schwangerschafts- und Geburtsbegleitung an. Zu unterscheiden ist hier zwischen certified nurse-midwives und direct entry midwives. Bei Erstgenannten handelt es sich um Krankenschwestern, die zusätzlich eine Ausbildung zur Hebamme absolviert haben. Letztgenannte sind „Direkteinsteigerinnen“, also midwives, die keine Krankenschwester-Ausbildung vorweisen können.

GEBURTSORT Anders als in Deutschland legst du dich in Amerika mit der Wahl des OB/GYNs oder der midwife auch immer auf das Krankenhaus fest, in dem du dein Kind zur Welt bringen wirst. Der Hintergrund: Gynäkologen und Hebammen haben in den USA nur in bestimmten Krankenhäusern Belegbetten. Entsprechend können sie nur dort entbinden. Für dich bedeutet das: Du solltest dich frühzeitig informieren, mit welchen Krankenhäusern dein Wunscharzt beziehungsweise deine Wunschhebamme zusammenarbeiten. Oder, wenn du ein Wunschkrankenhaus hast, in Erfahrung bringen, welche Ärzte vertraglich an dieses Krankenhaus gebunden sind. Neben dem Krankenhaus gibt es in den USA außerdem Geburtshäuser (birth centers oder auch birthing centers), in denen du entweder mit einer Hebamme oder einem Arzt entbinden kannst. Auch Hausgeburten sind in Amerika grundsätzlich möglich. In einigen Bundesstaaten ist es Hebammen jedoch verboten, Hausgeburten durchzuführen.

EXPAT-Spezial: Schwangerschaft

KAISERSCHNITT, PDA UND ANDERE EINGRIFFE In den USA werden Geburten deutlich häufiger als in Deutschland hormonell eingeleitet (induced). In Deutschland können Schwangere in der Regel bis zu zwei Wochen „übertragen“, sofern keine medizinischen Gründe dagegensprechen. Amerikanische Ärzte hingegen lassen nach Erreichen des errechneten Geburtstermins meist nur eine Woche vergehen, bis sie die Geburtseinleitung nahelegen. Auch bei anderen Eingriffen ist man in den USA weit weniger zögerlich als in Deutschland. Während in Deutschland der weit überwiegende Teil der Gebärenden auf eine Päriduralanästhesie (kurz PDA) verzichtet, erhalten in amerikanischen Krankenhäusern oft über 85 Prozent der Frauen eine sogenannte epidural. Etwas anders sieht es bei Kaiserschnitten aus. Lange Zeit hatten die USA eine erheblich höhere Kaiserschnittrate als Deutschland. Doch in den vergangenen Jahren ist auch in der Bundesrepublik die Rate der Entbindungen per Kaiserschnitt deutlich gestiegen. Inzwischen liegen Deutschland und Amerika nahezu gleich auf: Etwa jedes dritte Baby kommt per Kaiserschnitt zur Welt (in der BRD sind es 30,5 Prozent, in den USA 32 Prozent). Möchtest du eine Schnittgeburt möglichst vermeiden, solltest du das unbedingt im Vorfeld mit deinem Arzt oder deiner Hebamme besprechen und im birth plan festhalten. In diesem Geburtsplan wird festgehalten, wie du dir die Entbindung vorstellst und wie deine „Wunschgeburt“ aussieht.

GEBURTSBETREUUNG In Deutschland muss bei jeder Geburt eine Hebamme anwesend sein – auch im Krankenhaus unter Aufsicht eines Arztes. In den USA ist das nicht erforderlich, meist sind im Kreißsaal nur Ärzte und Schwestern anwesend. Wenn dir die Anwesenheit einer Hebamme wichtig ist, solltest du deshalb unbedingt frühzeitig klären, ob dies grundsätzlich möglich ist, und dich gegebenenfalls um eine eigene Hebamme kümmern. Neben der Betreuung durch eine Hebamme ist auch die Unterstützung durch eine Doula möglich. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Geburtsbegleiterin, die auf die emotionale Hilfe der Frau vor, während und nach der Geburt spezialisiert ist. In den USA sind Doulas sehr weit verbreitet. Die Vorteile: Frauen, die eine Doula an ihrer Seite haben, brauchen oft weniger wehenfördernde und schmerzstillende Mittel, sie haben durchschnittlich eine kürzere Geburt und die Zahl der Eingriffe mit Zange oder Saugglocke sowie die Kaiserschnittrate verringert sich dramatisch. Der Nachteil: Eine Doula ist nicht ganz günstig und in der Regel werden ihre Leistungen nicht von der Krankenkasse übernommen.

BESCHNEIDUNG Während in Deutschland die wenigsten männlichen Babys nach der Geburt beschnitten werden, ist die Beschneidung in den USA nicht die Ausnahme, sondern die Regel: Rund 80 Prozent aller männlichen Babys werden beschnitten. Wenn du nicht möchtest, dass dein Junge auf dem Cookie Cutter (ja, so wird das Gerät, mit dem die Jungen beschnitten werden, tatsächlich genannt) landet, solltest du dies in deinen birth plan aufnehmen und dein Baby zu allen Untersuchungen im Krankenhaus begleiten oder durch deinen Partner begleiten lassen.

WOCHENBETT UND NACHBETREUUNG Nach der Geburt bleiben Mutter und Kind in der Regel zwei Tage im Krankenhaus, bei Schnittgeburten fünf Tage. Danach ist die frischgebackene Mutter weitgehend auf sich allein gestellt. Denn anders als in Deutschland kommt in den USA keine Hebamme für die Nachsorge nach Hause. Erst vier bis sechs Wochen nach der Geburt findet eine Nachuntersuchung durch den Arzt statt. Wenn du nicht auf Unterstützung während des Wochenbetts verzichten möchtest, solltest du dir überlegen, eine Doula für die Nachsorge in Anspruch zu nehmen. Wie die Hebamme in Deutschland steht sie dir bei allen Fragen zum Stillen oder zur Babypflege zur Seite und unterstützt dich, damit du dich von der Geburt erholen und die erste Zeit mit deinem frisch geschlüpften Baby genießen kannst. Bereitet dir das Stillen Schwierigkeiten, kannst du außerdem eine Stillberaterin (lactation consultant) kontaktieren. Introducing the German Language School Conference (GLSC) The GLSC was originally founded by representatives of German language schools in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania with the support and encouragement of the German Consulate General New York. The goal was and is to provide an organization for the sharing of experiences and best practices geared to the unique needs of language schools, particularly in the field of heritage language education. Since its founding, the GLSC has grown to include the majority of German language schools across the U.S. and is the only national organization dedicated to the needs of these schools.

What’s a German Language School and how effective are they? GLSC member schools are community-based language schools that typically operate as Saturday schools, but some offer after-school classes during the week as well. GLSC schools foster German language education in the U.S. by preparing students for the German Language Diploma (Deutsches Sprachdiplom or DSD) conducted and evaluated by the Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA) in Bonn. This diploma certifies that a student’s command of the German language is sufficient for study at a German university. However, in addition to the DSD, many

of the students of the GLSC’s member schools also participate in the National German Exam administered by the American Association of Teachers of German. Here, our students outperform their non-German language school peers on each level of this exam. In 2018, the total mean score on level II was 11.4 points higher for German language school students, 16.6 points higher on level III, and 19.9 points higher on level IV.

Are the schools for kids only? In many schools parents can take separate adult classes at the same time as their children to learn or brush up on their German.

The Annual Conference of the GLSC The GLSC’s Annual Conference in November is dedicated solely to the needs, issues, and concerns of the community-based German language schools, their teachers and administrators. The all-day conference offers participants five separate strands of workshops: for pre-K and elementary grades, for teachers of adults, high school and advanced students, testing and test preparation, as well as best practices and organizational and administrative topics.

First German Grundschule (lower school) Opens in Manhattan German School Manhattan (GSM), the first German-English bilingual school in the borough of Manhattan opened in September 2018 with an inaugural Kindergarten class. WHAT ARE GERMANS READING RIGHT NOW? Impressions from the World’s Largest Book Trade Fair Who said print is dead? Each year in October, the largest book fair in the world opens its doors in Frankfurt, Germany – the self-proclaimed “world capital of ideas”. Over 250,000 book fans, journalists, authors, and cosplayers visit the “Frankfurter Buchmesse” each year to celebrate one of the greatest inventions ever.

The book fair (“Buchmesse”) was first opened in 1949 and is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. The fair is not just an exhibition of the newest, most influential books but it’s a giant cultural festival with people from all over the world pouring into the great halls. One specific country is always chosen to be the guest of honor. This year, Georgia, its culture and language will be the focus of international media attention. The Frankfurter Buchmesse is one the world’s most important stages for current debates across nations and cultures. The fair always encourages lively, constructive dialogues on different world views and new ideas. In the end though, it brings together people who all have one thing in common: Their love and passion for stories. The German Book Prize was awarded for the first time in 2005 and is widely considered to be the most prestigious prize for German-language literary fiction. Six authors – four women and two men – made it on the shortlist this year. Since the submission process began, the seven members of the jury had to read 199 titles and choose the most impressive pieces of literary art.

Deﬁnitely not an easy decision! This year, it seems to be the case that historical and political ﬁction is especially prominent these days, reflecting the importance and influence of politics in our everyday lives. There’s a book about the 1970s Argentinian junta (1), there are stories from an immigrant from Prague to West Germany (2), a novel about the Soviet oppression of Georgia (3), a family history on the Canary Islands (4), a story about cult-like devotion to a mythical being (5), and a drama about China’s opium wars of the 1840s (6). The novels nominated for the German Book Prize 2018 were: 1. María Cecilia Barbetta, Nachtleuchten (Night Lights) 2. Maxim Biller, Sechs Koffer (Six Suitcases)

Inger-Maria Mahlke ﬁnally won the German Book Prize for her novel Archipel, which tells the story of the once influential Bernadotte family in Tenerife. Mahlke, who lives in Berlin, has become one of Germany’s most acclaimed novelists over the last 8 years. Literary critic Christine Loetscher quoted William Faulkner in regards to the book fair and its chosen books when saying “The past is never dead. It’s not even past”. As a kind of unspoken motto for the book fair, this quote summarizes the signiﬁcance of historical events, of mythical and suspenseful stories and, what the jury calls, “the sensuousness of another time, which always evokes ours”.

Thanksgiving ist in den USA der wohl bedeutendste Feiertag des Jahres – noch vor Weihnachten. Denn als weltlicher Feiertag schließt er Zwar ist auch Amerika ein christlich geprägtes Land. HAM ROAST Thanksgiving is all about Turkey in America, but we wanted to highlight another holiday tradition that’s a lot easier to prepare and definitely speaks to most German taste buds as well - Ham Roast!

DIRECTIONS INGREDIENTS

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (about 175 C)

• one 14-16-pound bone-in smoked ham • 1/2 cup whole cloves, or enough to cover the ham • 1 tablespoon cinnamon • 1 tablespoon allspice • 1/2 cup Dijon mustard • 1 cup brown sugar • 1/4 cup honey • Juice from 1 orange • Juice from 1/2 lemon • 1/4 cup ginger ale soda

Score the ham’s outer layer of fat (=make a criss-cross pattern) and stick the whole cloves all over it, about 1 inch apart. In a small bowl, combine cinnamon and allspice and coat the fat of the ham with the spices. Cover with aluminum foil and bake I the oven for 30 minutes.

While the ham bakes, heat the Dijon mustard, brown sugar, and honey in a small saucepan and whisk to combine. When the sugar has melted, thin it out with the orange and lemon juice and add the ginger ale so that it is thin enough to spread but thick enough to stick to the ham. Remove the ham from the oven and glaze it all over with the honey-Dijon mixture. Continue to cook uncovered, glazing every half-hour, until the inside of the thickest part of the ham registers 120 degrees, about 20 minutes per pound.

The magic of “Silent Night” has remained uninterrupted for 200 years. It marks the festive moments when the lights in church are dimmed or the family gathers around the Christmas tree. A song that promises consolation and gives hope. Over and over again. For centuries, the song connected people no matter of their personal background, age or religion but not many know of its origin: 200 years ago, Joseph Mohr, a priest from Salzburg, and Franz Xaver Gruber, a teacher from Upper Austria, sang the song for the very first time at the St. Nikola Church in Oberndorf near Salzburg. Joseph Mohr wrote the original poem and commissioned Franz Xaver Gruber to compose the melody. Only a few years later, singing families from the Zillertal valley carried the song from Austria into Europe and to the rest of the world. A MUST READ: Interview with Last “Weisse Rose” Survior by “Der Spiegel”

The German news magazine “Der Spiegel” met with Traute Lafrenz, the last survivor of the “Weisse Rose” (White Rose), a student resistance group during the Hitler WWII. Two of the most prominent members of the “Weisse Rose” are the siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl, featured in many books and movies, who were executed for treason against Nazi-Germany in 1942. Traute Lafrenz was Hans’ girl-friend in 1941 and very close to the Scholl family. Being from a well-to-do family in Hamburg, she studied medicine in Munich where she met Hans. One of the most poignant statements that Lafrenz made in conversation with “Der Spiegel” is that the Weisse Rose was not a highly political group from the

start. It all began with a few friends reading Kafka, Dostoijewski and other works forbidden during the Third Reich. After being drafted to the front, Hans Scholl and his friends saw what was happening at the Eastern Front and at the Warsaw Ghetto. What they saw was in tune with what they heard on the radio station BBC which also aired Thomas Mann’s speeches in German. They were so appalled that they decided to act. Looking back, Trude Lafrenz is still amazed how much importance has been given to the “Weisse Rose” in history books. “We only distributed a few anti-war and anti-Nazi flyers,” she said. “Anybody could have done that.” According to police reports, however, Lafrenz herself was instrumental in saving many lives during the years of Nazi terror which led to imprisonment until she was freed by the Americans. Traute Lafrenz also points out important parallels between the Third Reich and what is happening right now in Germany and in the U.S. An important read that should not be missed. TV TIP “Apocalypse” on DW-TV On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the end of World World I, Deutsche Welle (DW-TV), Germany’s official broadcasting station, produced an excellent two-part documentary about the years following the end of WWI and its impact on Europe during the next decade. While WWI ended with Germany’s formal surrender on November 11, 1918, which stopped all active fighting, the peace treaty terms were being negotiated for months afterwards and resulted in the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. As a consequence, the German Empire lost substantial territories and is obliged to pay huge reparations. The Austro-Hungarian monarchy disintegrated. The Russian empire slid into a civil war – resulting in the creation of the Soviet Union.
