FASHION IS AN ART FORM CLOTHING AS CANVAS By Elaine Simmons

Fashion is an art form - you can call it decorative or applied art instead of fine art, but what's the difference? The same amount of artistic expression goes into clothes. The designer is an artist and the medium in which he or she works is clothing, just as the painter works on canvas, the composer through musical notes or the sculptor with stone, metal and marble. Art is any self-expression that is consciously made and displayed. What a person wears can be seen as art if it is meant to express inner self and outer flair. Fashion can be used as a form of self-expression and hence can be considered art….especially when the lines are used effectively. Examine any garment and you will discover its internal line and design features. Design features within the internal garment include; pockets, lapels, collars, darts, zippers, buttons, texture and pattern. The shape, location and size of these features will all have an impact on your apparent height, weight and body proportions. Chosen well they can work minor miracles in camouflaging figure challenges. The internal garment is the area to which design features are added to enhance and give interest. It is the area which has the most impact on apparent weight, height and shape and where most women make their mistakes. This is the place that a designer can best express his artistic abilities.
We may not look at fashion in a frame on the wall, but fashion accomplishes many of the same things as art: Horizontal Influence Any design line or feature that causes the eye to move in a horizontal direction (e.g., boat necklines, most hem lines, horizontal stripes, pockets placed on either side of the body, belts, etc.). Horizontal influence decreases apparent height by breaking up length and emphasizing width. Circular Influence Circular design features include scooped necklines, ruffles, puff sleeves, flounced hems, swirly design lines and patterns, polka dots, rounded pockets and most floral designs. Use round lines to balance the body where one area is larger than the other. Triangular Influence
Triangles fall within the diagonal category and are one of the most common design elements within fashion, e.g. 'V' necklines, collars, lapels, 'V' shaped button placement on a double-breasted jacket or a chain and pendant. Triangles can be used high on the body to capture attention. hile we typically think of polka dots in candy colors, spring and summer pastels and stripes can harken back to the days of Audrey in her summer boat neck sweater – these two prints are easily translated to fall fashions.
It may seem obvious, but truly the trick is to move into the next season gracefully – taking color and pattern into account. This fall, fashion goes for stripes, dots and stunning graphic prints – they are everywhere from ready-to-wear to accessories. 1) News flash - what’s black and white and red all over... stripes! Break the story in big, thick magic marker prints. 2) Stroke of genius – horizontal and vertical are certainly still on trend but a stripe can take the form of chevron or zebra – rock this out in unexpected color combinations – just by removing white as the base color you transpose the look for fall. 3) Dot, dot, dot – don’t think Julia at the polo match in the ubiquitous brown and white dress – switch up the polka dot in
contrasting hues – here again when white is extracted from the palette in polka dots you’ve opened the door to this pattern’s wearability in the cooler seasons. 4) Spot on – polka dots do not have to be an all-over pattern – try a solid sweater with a smattering of dots – groupings of three will make your point. 5) Circle up – try the polka dot trend in an outerwear piece – what better to brighten a gray day than a swing trench featuring droplets of color.
There you have it – stripes and polka dots aren’t going anywhere because they are classic – so just like you no longer pack away your white jeans when the clock strikes midnight on Labor Day – with the right cut, color and pattern configuration you can wear these timeless prints year-round.

reflect back on my childhood, I can remember numerous first days of school. I remember I was excited because I was going to be in a new class, I had new stuff, and I knew that “this year” was going to be great. Not all of my friends have had the same reaction when the first day of school approached. I remember several of them being nonchalant about the whole situation, and I had other friends who actually threw up the night before the first day of school every year. As a mother, I utilize these memories to try to empathize with how my children feel at this time of year. As the first day of school approaches every year, my children seem to be excited. Because I do not want the excitement to turn into anxiety or fear, I try to make school preparation fun for them. I do not simply collect the school supply lists and go out and purchase what they need. I actually have my kids play an active role in the
purchasing of supplies. Having my children be active participants in the school preparation process seems to make them more excited. With four children, buying and organizing school supplies can get a bit hectic. To streamline the process, we make two lists for each child. The first list is for their personal school supplies (back pack, pencils, glue, etc.). The second the list is for classroom supplies (tissues, sanitizer, etc.). An item does not “officially” get checked off our lists until it is purchased and put in either the book bag or the classroom supply bag. When all items are checked off of each list, my sons feel a sense of accomplishment and are even more excited to start school and use their new supplies. Doing simple things such as actively including my children in the back-to-school preparation process makes the experience memorable for them. If I remember my first days of school, they most likely will remember theirs as well, and I want their memories to be positive.

Enriching Social Studies through the Arts

Last month,
I highlighted the many piano accomplishments of Parkway Middle School student Quin Nardonne at the State Piano Competition. This month I would like to recognize Parkway Middle School music teacher Melton Mustafa. This talented Broward County musician and educator is a quarterfinalist for the Music Educator Award that will be presented February 2016 during GRAMMY week. While it is not surprising that such musical accomplishments are associated with a Broward County Public Schools Performing and Visual Arts magnet program, I want to write about a more surprising setting for the Arts. Being a life long lover of music, dance, and art, Broward County Public Schools Social Studies Staff Developer Marie DiRito made demonstrating to other educators how to teach Social Studies through the Arts a priority of hers. With the help of Instructional Specialist Tina Swanton, this professional learning opportunity for social studies teachers came to fruition this past summer. The Arts and Social Studies have a strong and longstanding history with each other, for through culture societies define their values, beliefs, philosophies, and themselves. The Arts are directly influenced by the social, political, and economic experiences of a culture. Using the Arts in a social studies classroom helps students make a physical and emotional connection to the content, which deepens their understanding and piques their interest.
Through visuals, audio, and multimedia sources, students are provided with many opportunities to construct meaning from the past. Whether, students are examining dolphin frescos in their Middle School World History class or listening to WWII era music in High School U.S. History, the Arts greatly enhance the Social Studies curriculum. Modeling what they expect from their participants, Marie and Tina immerse them in what the student experience should be from the time participants enter the room. As teachers enter the room classical music from Marie’s iTunes is playing and an image from the Renaissance is prominently displayed to spark curiosity. Throughout the day participants are challenged to write and perform a song related to a historical topic, compare works of art using a magnifying glass so not to miss even the smallest detail, and many other educational and engaging activities. I initially wanted to continue writing about the Broward County Public Schools Performing and Visual Arts magnet program, which undoubtedly enriches the lives of many students through curriculum rich in music, dance, theatre, and visual arts. Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Charles Catoe, CHT/CHWS, Hyperbaric Safety Officer What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy? Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBOT) is a mode of therapy in which the patient breathes 100% oxygen (O2) at pressures greater than normal atmospheric (sea level) pressure. The patient is exposed to the same kind of pressure a SCUBA diver would experience at similar depths. How can Oxygen (O2) be a drug? The elevated pressure and increased percentage (100%) within the hyperbaric chamber results in a 10-15 fold oxygen increase in blood absorption, which help new blood vessels grow and helps the body’s own defenses fight infections that it normally could not. Why does the therapy take so long? TIME is our dose. The deeper you go and longer you stay, the more oxygen is absorbed into your tissues. It takes time to get to the pressure and only then does your treatment time begin; after you finish, we have to decompress back to the surface. What does it feel like? After the door closes, you will hear gas hissing, like a lot of wind, and feel pressure on your ears. The patient must “clear” this pressure by holding their nose and blowing air back through the nose or swallowing some water or tilting your head back. Just like a SCUBA diver or the same sensation you feel on an airplane, prior to take off. Once you reach the max pressure, you will no longer have to clear your ears and may now relax, watch TV, a movie, or even go to sleep. Are there any side effects? Some patients experience changes in eyesight. If your eyesight changes for the better or gets worse; not to worry, this too will return to pre-treatment levels around 3-4 weeks after your treatments end. Please keep all glasses or contact prescriptions the same.

Will I get claustrophobic? Our Sechrist 41” chambers are the largest single person chambers made in the world!!! They are constructed in the USA, of thick clear 1.5” acrylic with 3” steel plates and piping that have a pressure capability of 66 feet of sea water. Do not worry; water is not used in our chambers since they are compressed with 100% oxygen. The constant flow of oxygen gives the patient O2 to breathe, cools the chamber, and removes exhaled byproducts of respiration. Once on the bottom, we can control the flow to make it warmer or cooler, you get to decide. So please, tell us if you are hot or cold and we will adjust accordingly. What do I wear or bring to the center? Clothing will be provided to you once you arrive and we ask you wear only cotton undergarments with no perfumes or colognes. No makeup, lip gloss, hair gels or sprays are allowed either. Alcohol or petroleum products are not allowed in the chamber. Basically, we need you right out of your bath or shower!! This is for your safety as well as our staff. No electronics are allowed in the chamber. Please leave them at home or silence them off vibrate while you are in the chamber. Tasteful movies are allowed and we ask your respect for others when making your choice. What if I want to get out of the chamber? You are the boss; if at any time you wish to come out of the chamber, tell the staff immediately and you will be removed. However, it does take a few minutes to get you out, so please talk to staff while we bring you out and understand your safety is our main concern. How many treatments will I need? Everyone heals differently and the standard course is 20 treatments or one month; we then reassess your progress and decide how best to proceed, some take 60.

lthough the Pompano Beach area has not been hit by a major hurricane in almost a decade, large Atlantic storms have frequently caused significant damage here. The most devastating for Pompano Beach were probably the hurricanes that struck South Florida in 1926, 1928 and 1947, but others have left destruction in their wake. See here is clean-up efforts at the Beacon Light Shopping Center on North Federal Highway following Hurricane Cleo, a Category 2 storm that passed over Pompano Beach on August 27, 1964.

GIRL, NOTICED By Charlotte Sundquist

The arts are something I live, sleep, eat and
breathe. Creativity surrounds us in South Florida, and I have always been inspired by my friends that make their living in the visual and performing arts. While a great play or a live musical performance can be entertaining, art can also serve for a positive social purpose. Throughout the past year, I have witnessed local artist Lori Pratico develop a project known as Girl Noticed. I first heard about it over lunch one day. I loved the concept, and thought this month’s article would be a great way to notice her for a change. Lori is a local visual artist that I had met years ago through my involvement with the South Florida Artists Association. She is a phenomenal portrait artist who also uses her talents to create large scale murals. This project combined both of those talents and emphasized recognizing the strength, courage, talents and tenacity of females throughout the United States. In her words: “I’m creating something you have no choice but to notice. Art has always been where I have found my voice, and I aim to be heard.”
There is a window of time to "notice" the artwork Her goal is to travel to each of the 50 states within the next few years and create detailed charcoal murals on exterior walls that depict a specific woman or girl within that community. Lori states “The idea is, weather conditions and time will naturally and quickly fade away these images. There is a window of time to “Notice” the artwork that has been created, thus representing the message: “when an individual’s talents, intelligence, and character are left
unnoticed, they may fade away, disappear, and never be seen or developed into their full potential.” Each individual chosen will be photographed alongside their portrait and these photos will comprise a book to be published at the completion of the project.
What I see is the effect this has had on those involved And while the art itself is interesting, what I see is the effect that the project has in the individuals who have been involved. I see videos being created by women and girls on the social media page that capture them listing their personality traits and their talents, with the last phrase being “notice me”. It’s not only empowering for the individual, I see it inspiring moms to encourage their own daughters to do the same. And through this process is how Lori has come to find her individuals for the murals. She has captured women who courageously battled cancer, who have run marathons, and most importantly, shy little girls that would otherwise sit by themselves in a corner. With each one, she makes them larger than life, within their own communities, so that they are seen and heard. IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING By Misty Schwartz; photos © Kweisi Gharreau When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act? Acting sort of fell in to my lap. But with it, I was able to heal. I was able to vent what I had been bottling up inside my heart for such a long time. I had gotten into a lot of trouble in a near death car crash that literally changed my life. Long story short, acting became the vehicle, ironically, that saved me. I spent my teen years hiding my tears, seeking to please others and worrying about being accepted and associated with the unpopular. It was an alter ego that gave me a bubble in which I hid and protected myself. doing bad things was easier to handle than being depressed and feeling like I wanted to commit suicide. How did I get there? By numerous ways in which I was bullied when I moved here from Brasil at twelve years of age without knowing the language. So when acting fell into my lap years down the line, I wasn't trying to pursue it at first. But I was able to process and come to know myself through it. I wasn't judged, I was perfect in my imperfection and for the first time in my life I was able to feel again and be true to who I really was. That's when I decided I was going to do this for the rest of my life and nothing else
matters. It has been all due to my elective class in high school (drama), where I had to audition for one of the school plays as a requirement for the class I was coerced to be in. I booked my audition and got a leading role in A MidSummer Nights’ Dream by Shakespeare. I fell in love with the stage and acting. But I didn't have a clue as to what I was doing. Honestly. I was apparently good because I continued to book almost every other play my high school produced for the remainder of my time there. I did join the drama magnet program at Dr. Phillips High, and got some basic knowledge and training. I auditioned for Universal Studios Orlando, and at my first attempt, I got hired into the Entertainment Department. I began doing films, commercials, industrials, etc. I did join different acting schools, like Zoe And Company, Inc., Acts III, Universal Studios (many different classes), etc. I say all this to say, that although I did go to acting schools, have taken workshops, joined different theaters and all, and have even had the privilege of studying with Richard Brander (Kevin Costner’s acting coach and friend for decades and one of the biggest acting coaches in Hollywood) - so even though I've had much

point. I don't ever want to be in such a place because I believe in growth. I believe in teaching the wise and he becomes wiser. There's much more to conquer ahead. What was your favorite role to date and why? When the TV show Power came out on breakdown for casting, my agent submitted my headshot for consideration and they denied me the opportunity to audition. So she called casting directly and insisted on them seeing me. After begging, literally. They said that I could put myself on tape for it. I didn't come to find this out till after the fact. I got the usual call from my agent about putting myself on tape for an audition like other times. Goes to show how much an agent that believes in you is critical. So I put myself on tape for the role of Julio. I had to do that two times before actually getting called in. The second time was only to apply a note. Well, that got me called in for a general audition. What a process just to get in the door! Long story short, I ended up auditioning for Ruiz next, then they gave me Nomar.I went through the regular process of callbacks, waiting for the producer to review the taped audition with the casting director and then they called and made us an offer for Nomar. Usually they don't do that. If they don't like your audition or don't find you fitting for the role they are seeing you for they don't give you further opportunities. So Power was special for me right from the get go. I'm very grateful for it. It humbled me in so many ways as well. I had been on an upstream for a minute and my body of work was very fitting with the context of what the show was about. I almost felt like saying, we are straight offer only on this one! Had I done that, I would not have worked on the show at all. I didn't initially see how great the show was from the writing to the actors involved because I had no knowledge of any of the above. I got the sides only for the characters they were throwing at me and that was that. Nomar gave me the opportunity I had long waited for as an actor. He was the typical gangster that I had done numerous times before, but he was not only a pedophile but he was young and a human being with so many different colors. I wasn't even a part of the main story line. I was supposed to be the back story only, almost like a featured background. But I kept giving them so much, I remember Courtney Kemp Agboh saying on the set to me one day while next to Lela Loren (who plays Angela Valdez on the show), she said, we just loved everything you were doing, so we kept giving you more. So much so that Nomar became so much a part of the main storyline that he is still talked about in just about every episode continuously still after being killed off on the first episode of season two. There's so much more to say about this role and that’s why it's one of my favorite thus far. I could write pages and pages on it. But I'll just end by saying this: my participation in Power and my role as Nomar in it has taught me so much more than I could have ever expected from an opportunity as such, the one thing I take away from it that has changed me drastically and my approach to every other role and why I loved it so much is that every piece of my involvement from beginning to today on training that I could boast about, I feel that most of my craft was Power has taught me in practice that humility is really the key to being exalted. Like most gifts, you can misuse it, abuse it, and waste it. But there's no gift like the ability to engage with someone’s thinking and feeling and through that channel, to draw them out of their reality and into another. It's liberating. That's what acting provides. It's serving the human spirit. I feel the weight of this honor as a privilege. I love to serve at the end of the day and that's what inspires me the most about it. We need to dream and imagine and I believe that acting ushers us there. I love people. Performing is my way of staying connected with them. I can't imagine myself doing anything else. When did you realize you had reached your goals as an actor? When you are named the fastest rising Latino talent on TV today, then you are given a humanitarian award for helping people get to where you are as well without asking for a penny in return and at the same time having an international Network like Globo doing a special documentary on your life and career that's about to be launched internationally. That's how I know that I'm doing right by me. I know where I come from, so for me it's not so much about these things mentioned, but to where I'm going from here. You see, I'm not worried about what I have, or don't have, but where I come from and what that means for others who aspire to do what I'm doing. That’s the significant thing about my journey that keeps me grounded and affirmed in my process. THERE'S A REASON FOR THE SEASON
Do you know yours? By Teana McDonald We all know that there are four seasons, right? Winter, spring, summer and fall. Do you honestly know which seasons are the most lucrative for your business? If you own a restaurant, retail space or travel agency it’s easy to determine your business cycle. What if you own a consulting company or sell products and services? Are you able to determine your seasons or cycles? Yes and no. Let’s jump right in to the reason for the season:
You can be consistently busy during all four seasons if you start to understand the rhythm of your business Even Disney has a season! The busiest, happiest place on Earth has a season. We all know that summer, holidays and spring break are the worst times to go see Mickey. Some of us venture out and take on the chaos and others wait until the cooler months. The same rules apply for your business; there are peaks and valleys. Your job is to determine what those are and figure out how to stay busy during the “slow times” and maximize the “busy times.” You can be consistently busy during all four seasons if you start to understand the rhythm of your business. For my company, the summers are always slow and that’s when I ramp up my networking efforts, speaking engagements and one-on-one sessions. This allows me to make up for the lull during the

summer. Think about the activities that you can take part in to increase revenue. What Are the Reasons? Taking a look at your sales from the previous season will paint a great picture for you. Start making notes that explain why your sales were up or down. For example, shopping mall construction caused less traffic, Publix opened next door and that increased traffic, a new product launched or maybe you attended more networking events that brought more business. Whatever the reason for the peaks or valleys, get in the habit of looking at your numbers and making notes. This will be an eye-opener for you when you’re setting your sales goals. Understanding the reason behind the sales or lack thereof will create a robust and strategic plan that will set you and your employees up for a successful season. Get Creative! Posting to social media, running an ad or having a sale does not mean that the customers will come. Unless you’re Macys and can run commercials about your storewide savings, nobody cares. Get creative and use the seasons to your advantage. If it’s back to school, tax-free week, international beer day, whatever it is make it work for your business. Plan out unique marketing tactics that will connect you with your ideal customers. Stick to what’s trending and use it to your advantage. Football season,

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! PETER PAN DELIGHTS AT THE WICK This summer, the beloved J.M. Barrie classic Peter Pan took flight at The Wick Theatre as the final production of their inaugural summer series. The Tony Award-winning Broadway spectacular made its debut in 1954 and has been enchanting audiences ever since. Margaux Cutler was lucky enough to interview Shanon Mari Mills (who played Peter Pan) and Broadway veteran Robin Hayes, who played the roles of Captain Hook and Mr. Darling. Read on for more. A few minutes with Shanon Mari Mills Tell me how you first got involved in show business. I went and saw a friend in Peter Pan at age seven, and I turned to my mom and said “I want to do that”, and in the fall I started in a children’s theatre company; every Sunday I would go to rehearsal. I didn’t have any formal training. And the first role I played was Jane in Peter Pan! What’s your dream role? I played the understudy of Glenda the good witch for Wicked’s national tour for a year and a half.
What advice would you give to aspiring actors? You know I think, to learn what your strengths and weakness are and go with them and learn more about them. Know that that’s never a reason to give up; if this is something you want to do you must continue to do it; never give up. What is the most stressful and most rewarding part of being an actor? This really isn’t that stressful, I think the most stressful part is trying to create my own Peter Pan and not be an imitation as well as relearn things that are similar but not exactly the same, sort of shutting off auto pilot and doing my own thing, as well as knowing I’m carrying the entire show, but making sure it’s a good show
What is it like as a woman to play Peter Pan? It’s always been played on stage by a woman, but you get in touch with your inner little boy and you don’t have to worry about being ladylike and can jump on
things and climb all over and you get to have fun; it’s not easy. Boys are lower to the ground and a little more rough and tough and don’t stand up straight but once it’s there it’s easy to tap back in to. Who did you originally audition for and what was your reaction when you were cast for this part? I did not audition. I’m local to LA, and somehow they got my headshot and my agent called me saying they wanted me to play Peter Pan. What do you do in your free time? I used to teach at a children’s facility. But I stopped for Wicked, since then, I’ve been at home, being a wife. I have two dogs and a cat and enjoy just being home and relaxing.

The most rewarding, is sort of the same thing, to create my own Peter and as well as – this company is really incredible and strong - and it is really fun to come to rehearsal every day; they are positive and hard working and makes this process so much easier. Do you still get nervous? If so, what do you do to calm your nerves? I do still definitely get nervous, sometimes it’s [as if I’m] super scared and sometimes it’s as if I’m excited and I take it and use it and turn it into a positive. Being nervous is an energy and I allow it to help, not disintegrate my character. What would you like our readers to know? Come see Peter Pan, because it’s going to be amazing! (Ed. Note: Margaux did in fact have the opportunity to attend a performance, and she did in fact find it amazing! This season, get thee to The Wick. Margaux, no stranger to professional performances, mentioned that The Wick itself, as well as the show, felt like being at a Broadway play – on Broadway.)

A few minutes with Robin Hayes Tell me how you first got involved in show business. My parents are actors; I went to school to be a chemist, on a full scholarship and at the same time, participated in theater. I ended up changing majors and transferring to the University of Washington, where I became a drama major. What is it like to play the villain? I’m a really nice guy but I’ve made my living playing bad guys… I’m tall and have a deep voice….They’re fun to play. Mr. Darling can be ridiculous and Hook is the dark side of Mr. Darling, it really kinda works and it’s so much fun!!! Who did you originally audition for and what was your reaction when you were cast for this part? I worked with the director, Michael Ursua, in “My Fair Lady” a long time ago and he suggested me for the role of Captain Hook. It’s my dream role! What do you do in your free time? I have kids, and a family and not a lot of free time. I work at in IT department at law firm in between jobs to pay the bills. I also play the guitar. I was forced to pick an instrument in school, and I chose the guitar, which I played in the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
What advice would you give to aspiring actors? Read Audition by Michael Shurtleff; if you need to do this, then don’t let anything stop you. What is the most stressful and most rewarding part of being an actor? The whole thing is so rewarding because the whole role is so fun and I love characters like this that are outrageous - that are big, fun, wild characters - and

Michael has really encouraged me to have fun as I please, it’s important that we all be grounded and that it serve the play at the end. I love the whole cast; they are so sweet. There’s always stress but there’s not one thing that’s exactly stressful – probably only that we just have a little over two weeks to rehearse. Did you have to do anything extra to get more into character either physically or mentally? I’ve had to deal with the idea of having a Hook instead of a hand… it’s on the left side so I can use the right hand for the sword fight at the end. Do you still get nervous? If so, what do you do to calm your nerves? Yes, but I try to focus on the task at hand; acting is a process of making decisions and you need to make them each night so it’s the illusion of the first time - there’s a lot to think about. The best thing is to focus on being with the other actors. Acting isn’t something you do; it’s about interacting with other people. Peter Pan is also for adults, it’s not just a silly kid show. There are some serious themes and humor that the adults will enjoy. I saw it when I was fully grown on Broadway. What’s the one thing you want our readers to know? First of all it’s just fun, so much fun but to me it really speaks to the world today… When I look around I see cynicism; when you look at pop culture it encourages
bad behavior…that’s not what this is about.. This is about fun, youth and freedom and the childlike innocence; that childlike sense of wonder that we all need to have and hold on to! Even as Captain Hook! Mr. Darling and Hook are both fun and outrageous! I’m disappointed that I don’t get to fly… I’ve never done that for a part before… I’ve sky dived but wanted to fly. I had to reread the book for this play. The flight director is very very good!

Small hotels and inns that win the coveted White Glove Award do so only after achieving a 100-percent perfect score from rigorous annual surprise inspections that can last for hours. It’s an award that all of Beach Vacation Rentals’ multi-unit cottage and apartment complexes have won consecutively for the fourth straight year. They include Cottages by the Ocean, Bahama Beach Club, Sunny Place, Pineapple Place and Pelican Place. “Cleanliness is a traveler’s top priority when needing to stay overnight away from home, and my staff and I take that very seriously,” said Elaine Fitzgerald, President and CEO of Beach Vacation Rentals. “So many of our guests are here to visit friends and family locally in Pompano Beach, and we make sure that our rental apartments and cottages are every bit as clean as their own homes.” Fitzgerald said the Superior Small Lodgings inspector pulled apart the bedding to check the quality of the sheets, mattress pads and pillow protectors. She looked for any dust on the light bulbs. She measured the sizes of the soap and towels. She pulled all of the furniture from the walls to look behind. “She checked everything including the silverware, pots and pans and toilet seats,” said Fitzgerald. “She inspected our places for several hours. It was intense; but in the end, we scored 100-percent.” “The White Glove Award is our organization’s highest recognition for housekeeping achievement,” said Scott Rizelli, executive director of Florida’s statewide Superior Small Lodging Association. “Honorees receive their awards at our statewide conference in October.” The tough guidelines for Superior Small Lodgings inspections go far above and beyond the State of Florida annual inspections that are required of all hotel properties.
