In honor of Valentine's Day, we bring you some of our favorites, from some terrific shows at the AMP to a great way to while away an afternoon to the best place to fuel up for your day (drive through coffee? Yes please!) Enjoy.

START YOUR DAY AT CHEZ CAFÉ We've been big fans of this local hangout for several years. Anywhere that offers good great coffee at the drive through? Terrific breakfasts, lunches, and smoothies too? We're in. But do yourself a favor - stop and smell the coffee, and sit for a spell. Chez Café's a great place to dine in too! We happen to have had the pleasure of conducting some of our favorite interviews in this intimate space. There's something about feeling like you're in your living room (except it's immaculate, and people are waiting on you) that brings out the best in folks. All that, and delicious food and drink? We're in. Located at 1631 South Cypress Road in Pompano Beach, Chez Café is open Mon - Fri: 7:00am - 4:00pm; Sat: 8:00am 3:00pm, and closed on Sundays. chezcafe.coffee/.

DO A LITTLE SHOPPING - OR A LOT! Next, mosey on over to Glam, Sparkle n' Glitz in Lauderdale by the Sea. Don't be fooled by its near the beach location, or the "Glitz" in its name - this is about the most fabulous local shop we've ever seen, and we've been to countless beach shops throughout the country. Owned by a local couple, Bill and Karen Glazer, the "Glitz" in the name comes from the Swarovski crystals that Karen, the better half (ok, we took some editorial liberty there), works with - "She stones anything that doesn't move," jokes Bill. Seriously, though: "We try to do everything uniquely and differently," he continues, and we can attest to the fact that everything in the store is, indeed, unique and different in the best possible way. While there are, to be sure, a festive selection of sparkly things (and who can resist those?), the store carries a vast assortment of items just perfect for the beachside lifestyle, and more. Need a scarf for those chilly days, or over air conditioned theatres and restaurants? Check. Fantastic flip flops to pair with that darling beach cover up? Got it. Lovely local artwork/ doormats/serveware/drinkware/plates? Yep. Crushable, packable, adjustable, UV-infused hats? We'll take one, thanks! Many of the items carry Bill and Karen's original "Lauderdale by the Sea" logo (hmmm, this gives us some ideas for our own city shops). And that serveware! Oh my! "Because we're by the beach," Bill explains, "we can't have a lot of glass." The plates, glasses and serveware are primarily acrylic and melamine - and we dare you to tell the difference between these and that pretty china and glassware that you've got, gathering dust, while you head for the beach. Really. In fact, you can come to our home, where we now own an embarrassing amount of Glam, Sparkle & Glitz products. It's all dishwasher safe too! Washable, usable art! We're in. Bill and Karen work with several artists around the United States, and are the exclusive retailers for many of their products. Don't miss the Michael Aram products. And - we saved the best for last - the newest arrival is "Get Waisted." This "wearable carryall" is the brainchild of Bill and his longtime friend and business associate, Rob Lembersky, and it's indescribably fabulous. According to Bill, it's "a sleek, fashionable belt that zips around the waist, with a pocket to hold a smartphone, two zipper pull compartments and an outlet for easy headphone access. Get Waisted is manufactured with high-quality, washable lycra fabric and is

10 Pompano Today February 2016

lightweight but strong enough to hold phones, keys, money and other personal items while a person is on the go." According to us, it's amazing. Before you start your day at Chez Café, grab your Get Waisted in one of several colors, and in goes your phone, your keys, your money, your headset - and go! We now own an embarrassing number of these, too. Glam, Sparkle n' Glitz is located at 211 East Commercial Boulevard in Lauderdale by the Sea. glamsparklenglitz.com/. To "Get Waisted", you can also visit getwaisted.info/.

CATCH AN AMAZING SHOW AT THE AMP You've been to the amp recently, right? Right??? Caught the incredible Little River Band? Enjoyed the legendary Englebert Humperdinck? If not, well, get with the program! Specifically, the programming at the amp. The Pompano Beach Amphitheatre (the amp) has come alive once again, with a great lineup of shows this season. Recently, we were lucky enough to attend two such performances, the first of which was a great evening of music and fun with Ambrosia, Player, and the Little River Band (read our review at pompanotoday.com/2016/01/a-rocking-revival-of-thespirit-at-the-pompano-beach-amphitheatre/). We also had the honor of interviewing Little River Band's Wayne Nelson. Read on for more... Tell me about growing up in Rome, Illinois, and how you got interested in R&B. Growing up in Rome was very simple. There was corn and there was a grade school and literally everybody walked to school. Central Illinois country roads. My graduating class had 16 or 17 people in it. The community was very new and very small and the neighborhood I lived in was new and small school didn’t even have a gymnasium. We practiced basketball outside in the winter in a parking lot. When we played a school that had a gym we thought, “We’ve arrived.” It was the mid-50s, a simpler time; you put your coat on and waked to school. For me, the biggest leftover of that time was one of those times walking back from school I got caught in a blizzard and caught a case of mild frostbite. When we play outside and the temperature is in the 50s, I lose the feeling in the tips of my fingers so I’m playing from muscle memory. [But] my best friend lived down the street; everybody knew everybody. It didn’t matter if you were in 1st grade or 8th grade, everybody played together. [As to my interest in R&B], I can’t attribute it to any one thing. Along with local bands, I think [it was] the intensity of R&B as opposed to what other rock and roll music was about – the groove and the feel of it – I was exposed to a lot of classical music and marching music. My dad was a drum major. That consistency and that groove – as soon as I was exposed to Motown and other R&B artists from NY and urban bands – I was not in an urban environment, I was very much from suburban and farm territory. It came at me all of a sudden, if you will, and I was just instantly drawn to the solid bass and drum and just fell in love with it. And in that rural environment, I wasn’t a musician – and it wasn’t until I moved into the Chicago area that I was much closer to that kind of music, so learning how to play – the influence was all around me at that point. I think if I’d learned how to play at an earlier age, it might not have come as

easy. Musically, I was in the right place at the right time for my growth. How old were you when you first picked up an instrument? Probably right around 16 or 17. I picked up someone’s old guitar with rusted strings; I was learning how to play chords with literally my fingers bleeding. My parents didn’t want me playing guitar so I had to play at night after they went to sleep. I was so familiar with bass lines, standing with my dad in the church choir. I was in a local band and telling the bass player, “No, it’s lower”, or this or that. Finally, the drummer of the band said, “Why don’t you play bass; we’d probably all be better off.” I’m still a heck of an acoustic guitar player but that’s when I turned to bass. What church did you grow up in? It was an Episcopal church in Peoria that was made into the central Illinois district cathedral, so we went from a smallish church to a cathedral with this massive pipe organ and more formal music and ceremonies. Where do you live now? What’s that like? Delray. We fell in love with Delray Beach immediately. We’ve been chasing the right climate for health reasons for my wife for years. Nashville wasn’t good, so we moved to Vegas because we thought the dry air would be good. While we were in Vegas we got exposed to the other side – great food, and great entertainment all week, which is great for me because I work on weekends so you never get to see the bands you want to see. Delray on a small scale is very similar. You can’t walk ten yards without hitting a restaurant. It’s similar to Las Olas. It’s a great feeling to know that people are coming to your area. The beach is beautiful, unincorporated, protected. On top of that, there is entertainment in West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, wherever you want to go. Our booking agent is here and he asked us, “Why don’t you come check it out?” We didn’t think we could go from dry air to humidity but it turns out that the crosswinds are exactly what we needed. We couldn’t be happier. We’ve never lived anywhere for more than two years and we've been here for five. We are settled and happy. [Ed. note: Our interview continues online at pompanotoday.com.]

The second show of the weekend brought us the incomparable Englebert Humperdinck. All we can say is "Oh, my." Actually, we can say a lot more. We can even - yes! - gush. What an outstanding performance. "Humper," as he is affectionately known, is a showman without equal who retains the voice of an angel and the sex appeal that made him - and keep him! famous. We were treated to an incredible evening of music, laughter, and romance in our beautiful gem of a concert venue. If you missed either or both of these, well, there's always next time! Enjoy the photos below and on page 29, and on our website, too! Looking ahead, there's a full slate of artists headed our way this season. You're welcome. Below: Englebert Humperdinck, during his stellar show at the amp

Body Language: A Gal's Guide to Flirting this Valentine's Day

M F

en are programmed as ancient hunters, and are especially alert to movement. When you are in their presence, the goal is to get their attention, so that they would move closer for your evaluation. You can do that by staying active, moving with quiet confidence and pride.

The movements of that language are more effective when they are smooth, graceful, and feminine. Move slowly and confidently, acting as though the place and the guys all came out just to watch you. Arrange your belongings, straighten your clothes, swish or fondle your hair to get it just right. Keep active, look good, appear available, and let all the guys know you are there.

ind somewhere to sit where you can see all the men, and more importantly, where they can see you. Spend the first few moments getting “organized.” What you are really doing is MOVING with your special female flirting body language, making sure that you will be noticed!

Watch for guys who have placed themselves where they can see all the women. Those guys are hunters in search of a mate. They’re going to be watching for appealing body language indicating that it’s okay to approach. Men are afraid of being rejected in front of other men, so they will be careful to pick a woman who appears available and safe to approach.

A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO THE ANCIENT ART Select the man YOU want and follow these steps, as if you are the world's greatest actress: 1. Catch his attention as he looks around the room. Make direct eye contact. When your eyes meet, smile and hold the connection longer than normal. This is a very special look and it packs a powerful body language message. 2. When you are looking at him, think these thoughts so that your face will be inviting to him, and it will help you time your gaze: "Come here, Prince Charming, I am the unique woman you want and I am all yours! All you have to do is come to me." 3. If he maintains eye contact with you, smile and drop your gaze DOWN to your lap or the table.

Looking for love in all the right places

4. In a few seconds, glance back at him to see if he is still looking your way, and let your eyes meet again for even friendlier eye contact. Keep the gaze for a slightly longer time, then smile and look down.

While it is, of course, possible to meet "the one" anywhere, that old advice about widening your circle remains as true as ever. Sure, you could meet them online (Tinder, anyone?) but we think that getting out there in the real world is still a great way to meet new people. Getting outside of your comfort zone - and just getting out of your home! - remain important, and maybe even more so in the digital age. Clockwise from top, left:

You have done this ancient mating dance correctly so far; now wait for him to approach you. This eye contact and looking down approach has been well studied by researchers in sociology. If he hasn’t come over to you in 10 to 15 seconds, shyly look back to see if he is still interested. He’s probably working up his courage. This time your look and your mental thoughts are going to be saying, "I don't understand why you are not coming over to approach me. I would like to meet you!" Thinking these thoughts will help to automatically form the correspondent look on your face.

your lifestyle fashion: the goods

Take note! 7 occasions that (still) call for pen and paper Ah, the handwritten note – with the accessibility of the internet and omnipresent connectivity , why not just dash off an email or a text to communicate? Because manners should not become extinct – we will be sorry. Someday, in a land far away your letter recipient will extract your note, written in your hand, and it will mean more than opening their email to see a typed missive. Handwritten notes are treasures. Get with the program – invest in the necessary materials – personalized stationery, stamps and a good pen and – not complicated but appreciated nonetheless.

1) You have received a gift. The giver took the time to pick out a gift for you…for heaven’s sake make the extra effort and write them a note. 2) You were a guest in someone’s home. Your host and/or hostess opened their home to you…they may have even wined and dined you – sit down and thank them…you’re likely to get the nod again. 3) You were treated to a meal. This one may be one you did not expect on the list, but just as your fortuitous free meal was unexpected…jot down your gratitude. 4) You are replying to an invitation. In this case, you only have to break out your stationery if the invite comes with no reply card – it is a lovely, lost practice…providing you the opportunity to send your best wishes or impart your regret that you are unable to be with them on their big day. 5) You are sending condolences. I can’t imagine this needs any

A FLORIDA ORIGINAL: RIFLE PAPER COMPANY

explanation…it is one thing to fire off a quick text or email to immediately let someone know you are thinking of them – but by all means follow it up with a handwritten note stating your sympathy. 6) You want to offer congratulations. One of those occasions where your note may be kept – odds are if you are committing the time to acknowledge an accomplishment in writing, the receiver is enjoying a special moment in life – always good to honor those. 7) You need to apologize. Despite the stickiness of this issue it is an important one to address – if you sincerely want to offer a heartfelt apology – in writing and genuine – forgiveness is sure to come. Whose fault is it, anyway?

C I I

hildren today are very different than the children of yesterday. Today it appears as if all motivation is extrinsic and that there is a lack of personal responsibility amongst our youth. I grew up believing that a person should be good and act responsible because it was the right thing to do, not because they would be rewarded for doing so. do not understand how our culture has changed so rapidly. Things weren’t like this when I was growing up. I know I am getting older, but I am not that old. What are the causes for these changes? Are the changes in the children’s motivation society’s fault? Are we setting positive examples? When I sit back and think about it, I have to say that it is society’s fault that the belief structure of our children has changed. n society, there is a complete lack of personal responsibility. Every time someone gets hurt, they are suing someone. Pain seems to equate to dollar signs in today’s world. Although some lawsuits may be justified, there are many that are completely frivolous. These frivolous lawsuits are another example of how there is a lack of personal responsibility amongst us.

If each of us works to instill positive core values in our children, we will be able to mold the children of tomorrow into responsible, productive citizens.

About the Staffords Dr. Gina and Jim Stafford have been married for over 15 years. Throughout that time they had four beautiful children – all boys!!! Over the course of their relationship they have faced ups and downs, especially since three out of the four sons were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Despite the obstacles that came their way, their marriage has grown stronger. People who know the couple always ask how they do it. The answer is that with hard work and faith anything is possible. The couple decided to share their story, their strategies, and their lives with other couples to assist them in building a relationship just as strong as their own. Each month, we bring you their words of wisdom, devoted to helping couples explore the many issues facing marriages today. Read more about this engaging couple at maritalminutes.com.

O

ur lack of personal responsibility has now impacted our children. If a child makes a poor decision, it is never his/her fault. There is always someone else that is to blame. How can we change this attitude? How will our children be successful with this attitude? How will our society flourish if personal responsibility is lost? I think each of us can make a difference. I am instilling my values in my children to make a change. If each of us works to instill positive core values in our children, we will be able to mold the children of tomorrow to become responsible, productive citizens. //BY DR. GINA STAFFORD

Why I loved being a classroom teacher This article is very topical for me because in the next few months I will be changing career paths and leaving Broward County Public Schools. Therefore, I apologize in advance that this article is more of a reflection of my past eleven years as an educator than a topical piece connecting the theme of love to education. However, I maintain that many teachers can relate to the experiences I am about to describe, and while I clearly do not speak for every educator, I hope the following words give insight into why I loved my time as a classroom teacher.

As an educator in the classroom, I had the ability to directly influence the lives of my students. As an educator, I had the ability to directly influence the lives of my students both inside and outside of the classroom. I remember walking into a Tijuana Flats and seeing one of my students being interviewed by the store manager, so of course I walked up to them and gave an in person recommendation. Bobby got the job and is now United States Army Military Police, but I am pretty sure both events do not constitute a cause and effect relationship. On another occasion, I used one of my contacts to help a student get a summer clerical job. Charlotte earned a Master’s degree in Social Work and is now a foster care social worker in Louisiana. Again, not a cause and effect relationship, but nonetheless it still demonstrates why I love teaching. As a teacher, I was able to help my students during a small snapshot of their life and then get to see them pay it forward as they journey into adulthood. Inside of the classroom I always tried my best to let each student know I cared, and in the words of Dr. Rita Pierson, “every child deserves a champion, an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection”. Simple acts such as showing up at a sporting event, remembering something unique, or just standing at the door and shaking hands with a smile can have a huge impact on a student. It is these little things that I miss most about teaching because I can’t remember what most students earned in my class, but I can recount countless stories and picture students waiting to enter my classroom.

Ruth. She said that I was her favorite teacher because I always listened to the students and allowed them to express their own voice; in her letter, Ruth epitomized my philosophy on education. By listening to students and giving them a platform to express their ideas, they grow into lifelong learners. This is not to say that their ideas were not challenged, as playing devil’s advocate and encouraging my students to do the same was a regular part of my class. While this article does not fit the typical mold of love in the month of Saint Valentine, it does accurately depict why I loved my time as a classroom teacher. I strongly believe that most teachers love their profession, and at least for me, my students have shaped and influenced who I am today as much as I have them. Broward County Public Schools has been very good to me, from the students to my professional mentors. That being said, I should thank Dr. Louise Ball for always pushing me in the right direction and being a great role model for me. //BY MICHAEL DIPIERRO

Michael DiPierro has a decade of experience in education. He currently holds a Master's degree in Educational Leadership and is an Instructional Specialist with Broward County Public Schools.

Before writing this, I read letters my students wrote me when I left my role as a classroom teacher for a district position in 2012, and it’s amazing that I can still hear some of their voices and see some of their faces as read their letters. For the purposes of brevity, I want to share just a few words that really stood out. Ana, whose native language is Portuguese, wrote that I gave her the confidence to speak English in public because of the support I gave her in class. Alex, and many other students, were glad that I made history relevant to them and went beyond the textbook. Lastly, I think one of the most moving comments was from

Go Italian, or local, or both, this Valentine's Day

Valentino's Italian Cuisine Jeff Eats loves Valentino’s Italian Cuisine. The joint’s pizza (sort of like a hybrid between a Chicago pie (deep crust) and a New York pie (thin/crispy slice-sweet sauce)) is absolutely off-thecharts delicious! By the way, everything that Valentino’s cooks-up is real good. Trust Jeff Eats on this one, you definitely wanna eat at Valentino’s - that’s assuming you wanna eat great stuff!

Stinger's Bar and Pizzeria Not gonna name names, but a long time reader (Jon G) who “knows his stuff ”has been telling Jeff Eats for almost-forever that I had to try Stingers Bar & Pizzeria!

beach…based on what I saw - the crowd is a mix of locals- and tourists that inhabit the hotels/motels that dot the beach landscape. I’m thinking that Stingers does a ton-of hotel/motel deliveries, but that’s just Jeff Eats thinking!

Long story short, last night Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats gave Stingers a shot…and the man once again- was right on the money…real good- burger/French fries, meatball pizza and philly cheese steak sub!

Stingers has indoor table/booth and outdoor table seating, a separate bar area, and tons of flat screen TVs… like I said 1.5 seconds ago, it's a real casual joint. Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, if you wear anything “more” that a tee shirt/ shorts/flip flop ensemble you’re gonna look pitifully overdressed!

Just so you know, Stingers Bar & Pizzeria is a neighborhood/sports bar that has been around for something like 21 years - and is as far from being fancy as can be! The joint is located in a small strip center - right across A1A from the

I was born (1949) and bred in Brooklyn, New York. Since 1991, I have lived full-time in South Florida and have eaten in so many restaurants (down here), that I now consider myself to be a FOOD EXPERT. To give you some idea as to how many South Florida restaurants I’ve been to, as of December 31, 2014, 441 Italian joints alone have had the pleasure of ringing up my American Express card. Just so you know, I don’t go for the fancy sit-down joints that want you to wear pants and a jacket, but rather places where a pair of shorts, an old tee shirt and a pair of sneakers is considered formal-wear. I don’t know one sauce from another. I also don’t know, or really care, how “dishes” are prepared. HEART HEALTHY INFORMATION Andre Landau, MD, FACC Interventional Cardiology Director Join us February 10th at 2pm for our SENIOR VALENTINE’S DANCE Party! To RSVP or for more information, please call 954.759.7400! What can a person do to maintain a healthy heart? Be aware of risk factors that cause heart disease. Specifically, 1. Stop Smoking. 2. Check your cholesterol profile (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL good cholesterol, and LDL bad cholesterol), and fasting blood sugar. 3. Perform aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes, five times per week. This could include anything from walking to taking zumba classes. 4. Check your body mass index (BMI). 5. Always consult your physician before making significant lifestyle changes to find out what’s right for you. Does aspirin really help the heart? Yes. Aspirin is a blood thinner that reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke, also known as brain attacks. Ask your doctor if you should take aspirin. What are big no-no’s for a healthy heart? First and foremost, don’t smoke. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption (more than two drinks per day). This adds unnecessary calories, raises triglycerides and damages the heart muscle in the long term. This is especially true of beer. What should someone do if they are experiencing chest pain? Cardiac chest pain is usually specific. It is dull, located in the central or front part of the chest, lasts a few minutes, occurs generally with moderate to severe exertion or severe psychosocial stress, and is relieved by rest. It may mimic indigestion. Always seek medical attention. What are good foods for the heart? Mediterranean diets, those that are rich in grains, nuts and olive oil, are heart healthy. Maintain a low carb diet, and reduce the amount of bread, rice, potatoes and pasta you eat. Are there routine medical tests that should be done for the heart? No medical test is considered routine. Based on your risk factor profile and symptoms, your doctor may order specific tests. These include: 1. Fasting cholesterol profile if you have a family history. 2. Chest X-ray for smokers. 3. A stress test and chest X-ray for those experiencing chest pain. 4. Lipid profile, fasting blood glucose and kidney function for the overweight, or those with high blood pressure or diabetes.

February is Heart Month! Make sure you take care of it! What heart-related services are provided by Broward Health North? Broward Heath North provides many services at the hospital’s cardiology department. Basic heart services are available along with stress testing, echocardiography, Holter monitoring, tilt table testing, cardiac catheterization and stenting. Patients can also have their current pacemakers evaluated and new ones put in or changed. The same goes for patients with defibrillators.

About Andre Landau, M.D.: Dr. Landau, MD, FACC, is a board-certified cardiologist and has been on staff at Broward Health North since August 2010. He received his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School in Johannesburg, South Africa. We'll say it. Red roses are trite. It’s the month of love! And hearts, and chocolate, and all things romantic. So what do you have planned for your sweetie to sweep them off their feet? Nothing you say? How about a little out of the box thinking and avoiding the restaurant crowds. And red roses? I may be speaking out of turn here, but… they are so predictable. And expensive. And they die. It may be time for some quick brainstorming. I will go over some of my favorite cars for 2016. Most of these cars are unique, have exquisite design and are high tech. We will start with the most expensive to the most practical. 1. The Jannarelly: this is a new car made from a steel tubular frame enveloped by fiberglass and carbon fiberhas a 3.5 L V6 engine delivering a 371 Nm of torque. This car will weigh just 710 kg and will hit 62 mph in 4 seconds. There is already a waiting list of buyers interested in being the first drivers. It was recently announced that this will be selling at about $55,000 and ready for sale this summer of 2016. 2. Bentley Continental GT: base price at $226,000, this V8 S convertible is equipped with a standard 6.0L, 8 cylinder engine that achieves 21 mpg on the highway. Many Bentley owners are fascinated with the new attractive sleek design and owning such a car is a status of success, wealth and power. 3. Ferrari 458 Spider: this 2-door, 2 seat convertible will cost you around $260,000. With a 4.5 L 8 cylinder engine and a sleek, curved and attractive design, this car is here to command attention and so is its driver. 4. McLaren 650 S: At a base price of $260,000 with 3.8L V8 with an engine that achieves 22 mpg on the highway, this car is a head turner. You will see more of the McLaren in Europe than in the US. 5. Lamborghini Aventador: base price of $390,000, this is the ride for many of our hip- hop artists and our rich and famous. This 2 door 2 seat coupe is equipped with a standard 6.5 L, 12 cylinders and an engine that achieves 18 mpg on the highway. It is pure race toy for the affluent! 6. Mercedes S65 AMG: priced at $230,00 with 6.0L V12 621 hp engine twin turbo with airbags including knee and overhead airbags. It has airbag occupancy sensors, airbag child seat sensor and automatic air conditioning. It is top of the line in technology, including the Distronic Plus distance pacing and driveline traction control. 7. Chevy Corvette Stingray: base price at $55,000 with 460 horsepower and a 6.2L V8 and a curb weight of 3298-3362 lbs, the Chevy has been the most desired car in the U.S. It caters to the speed lover in us, from a driver oriented cockpit to the purposeful design, Xenon HID lights and high tech interior. The Corvette will always be our favorite. 8. Porsche: Porsche has expanded its brand from just a pure performance sports car to include luxury large cars and SUV such as the Panamera, the Cayenne and Macan. Porsche continued with the tradition of opulence and design along with the technology that is demanded and expected from its customers. The Porsche that I will choose to feature will be the Porsche 911 priced at a base of $84,000 with 560 horsepower and 4.0 L 6 cylinders.

9. Buick Cascada: starting priced from $33,000, this is a convertible luxury car. Its soft top is making a come back for Buick (after 25 years). The top folds in 17 seconds, has a 1.6 L turbocharged direct injected 4 cylinder engine producing 200 horsepower, and it has a Wi-Fi hotspot for connecting to the internet. 10. Cadillac ATS-V: starting at $60,000. This is a muscle car. The V versions are considered high performance limited production. With a 3.6L V6 engine and 464 horsepower, this car can reach 60 mph within 3.8 seconds and can attain 189mph speed. It also comes equipped with a performance data recorder which allows the driver to record high definition videos and share them on the web. Now, there are many more cars that are worth mentioning like the Audi S8, the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the Acura NSX (priced at $100,000), the Chevy Camaro and the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT. Let’s not forget the Ford F150, which earned the Best Truck Brand Award for its strength. For a truck, the Ford F150 has proven that it is worth every penny spent on it. The new 2016 Ford F150 has a high dose of luxury along with the high tech connectivity features. Starting at $26,000, this truck has a towing capacity of 5000-9000 lbs and has 385 horsepower with a 5.0 L V8 engine. It is durable and has more safety, towing and hauling power of any truck of its kind. Now why don’t you lay back, close your eyes and just imagine owning and driving one of these cars. It is doable. You may even start by renting one of these cars and taking it for a drive, and you will then decide whether this will be your dream car or not. Remember, driving is not about the destination, it is about the journey, so enjoy the open roads and make it your goal to own one of these cars one day. Welcome to the open roads!

The feast AND famine phases?

When we hear the phrase “feast or famine” we think of abundance and lack, right? All businesses experience one or both of these. Of course the goal for any business owner is to “feast” or to be profitable all of the time. On the other side there’s the “famine” phase. Don’t think of the term “famine” as described in the Good Book being associated with starvation, droughts and lack of supplies. Think of “famine” as lack of planning, preparation, tools and resources.

SMARTER. BOLDER. FASTER. Whether you’re buying, selling or renting, contact us for real solutions to your real estate needs.

Every business goes through peaks and valleys also known as “feasts” or “famines.” Let’s jump right in and break open the stereotypes that this phrase implies. What does feast or famine mean? Before we break down the stereotypes, don’t we have to understand the definition? It can be either too much (feast) or too little (famine). That seems simple enough to digest and in my opinion carries no negative implications. Both terms can impact your business in a positive and negative way. For example, extra payroll dollars being spent (famine) is a result of an increase of sales and customers (feast). Your mission is to balance these two out and adjust your business model and processes when needed. What if I’m always “feasting?” That’s great! Give yourself a huge pat on the back. But while your business is flourishing, I guarantee that there are several areas that are suffering from “famine”, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Are there customer complaints? Are you constantly running out of product? Is your staff working effectively and efficiently when scheduled? Ask yourself these important questions. It’s great to have a booming business, but don’t let all of the profits cloud the fact that there “may” be other areas that need attention. What if I’m always experiencing “famine?”

I’m here to tell you the truth: it’s not good. When I had my children’s accessories business (which is closed), I was always experiencing famine. Money was going, product wasn’t selling (as fast as I wanted it to) and things were definitely not working in my favor. I had moments of “feasts” but they didn’t last long enough to sustain the business and recuperate from the financial loss (famine). When I took a step back and evaluated what was wrong, I realized that the product was too expensive to produce in the U.S. and I did not have the means to expand overseas. If

your famine or lack of sales, clients and success is consistent for a fair period of time, take a deeper look and discuss your options with a professional. There’s good news! The good news is that you have options! You have the option to seek out professional help or assistance to help you better understand your business. You also have the option to try new things and see if there’s any improvement. Some of us are visionaries and that’s ok; the downside is that we’re seeing the big picture and not taking into account the smaller pieces of the puzzle that should be in place to run the business.

Every industry has cycles; the trick is to navigate through these Every industry has cycles. The difficult part as an entrepreneur is to navigate through these cycles and understand how they impact your business. Too much (feast) or too little (famine) can work together in business if you understand what the cause and effect of each are by incorporating solutions and processes that make sense.

Scott L. Schwartz: the ultimate nice guy Scott L. Schwartz is most recognized as the “Ultimate Bad Guy” from his acting career including: Ocean’s 11, 12 & 13, Starsky & Hutch, Fun with Dick and Jane, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Star Trek Voyager, and many more feature films. But most fans don't know that Scott cherishes the role of the “Ultimate nice guy” the best … Scott L. Schwartz has been visiting children’s hospitals worldwide for the past 12 years after losing his sister to lung cancer in 1998. After that he realized the value and impact in making a lasting impression on these children with cancer and how important it is to make each child feel special and cared about. Scott enjoys visiting the cancer centers and bringing what joy he can into the lives of every child he visits, they are always smiling when he leaves the rooms and usually begging him to return soon.

Before we begin, congrats on your recent film "The Pizza Joint”. Tell us more about this project and what you did to prepare for it... "The Pizza Joint" was a hard film to prepare for. I play the part of an immigrant from eastern Europe. Wait......let me check my p.c. handbook and make sure I can say that. In my country, I dreamt of being a great chef. However, as luck would have it, I ended up at a pizza parlor! I had to come up with an eastern European accent. I had to work with a bunch of zany, and extremely skilled, actors, so that part was pretty comfortable for me. One of the hardships was the fact that we were working in an actual pizza parlor - in Houston! The temperatures were 90 degrees in Houston at the time - combined with the extreme heat from the kitchen! Well in excess of 100 degrees! But, at the end of the day, we all had fun, and gave the director and producers what they wanted. A win/win for everyone! When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act? I think that when I was a kid, starring in my family’s home movies, I was kind of a "ham". The camera fascinated me in some way. I never knew that it would work out to this extent, but it did. Once I got into professional wrestling, I really loved the camera. Once I started getting roles in Hollywood, I got bit by the "bug". The rest, as they say, is history! What inspires you to act? I think that if you want to break it down into its simplest rational motive, above all, it would have to be creativity! If you are a child, and you draw a picture, usually you throw it out within a couple years-if that. When you contribute to the creation of a film, you are immortal in its perpetuity. When you think about how many millions of people have watched you, and how many will watch you, you'd best be on your "a" game! When did you realize you had reached your goals as an actor? Well, when you have played one "type" of role.......for instance "a typical bad guy".... That’s cool. But when you play a variety of roles including a father, a brother, a police detective, a Hispanic gang member, in the hood, a Russian mafia kingpin, and even a pizza chef, and you are "believable" in all of them, you really have something there! And then, to top it off......to earn the praise of your peers.... that is a nice "icing on the cake". What was your favorite role to date and why? Well....I think every role is special to me. I remember once, my daughter asked me: "daddy, why are you always the bad guy in films"? I looked at her and replied: "someday honey, you'll understand the concept of paying a mortgage! Ha! I think the roles in which I played a Russian, and spoke Russian (in honor of my grandfather, who was a Russian Jew), or as the Hispanic gang member, in which I spoke Spanish were my favorites for the creativity of the roles. The "ocean's trilogy were a lot of fun, working with a Hollywood legend, Jerry Weintraub......making a film is similar to eating in a restaurant for the first time. There are lots of things you like. What do you enjoy most about your career? My career has afforded me the luxury of doing what I want to do, travel, and all the while, remaining drug, alcohol, and tobacco free! Can we expect a book from you? I have written some notes, but do not know. Who would want to read about me? Anyone that has ever met me can tell you that I am humble. I don't want to "brag" about myself! What is the best way for your fans to know what you’re working on? Facebook/Twitter? Do you post for your own sites or do you have your assistants do the posts for you? I do it all myself. I enjoy meeting my fans and interacting with them.
