Robotic-Assisted Joint Replacement Jim suffered from severe osteoarthritis in his left knee. He tried cortisone shots and other therapies, but the pain kept coming back. Then he went to the Joint Replacement Center at Broward Health North, where he finally got exactly what he needed: the expertise of his doctors, combined with the precision of Robotic-Assisted Partial Knee Surgery. The result was a less invasive form of partial knee replacement. Within only days of the surgery, Jim was walking unassisted. And amazed at how quickly he was back in full swing. Learn more about this innovative procedure at BrowardHealth.org/BHN or call 954.786.6635

Jim never heard of Robotic-Assisted Joint Replacement. Now he’s thrilled he had it.

Whatever it takes.

December notes

Ahhh, the holidays! Some of us look so forward to this time of year, and others, not so much. We will, however, take this opportunity to wish ourselves a happy birthday our very first print edition was in December 2011, so this month marks four years in print and just over five years as Pompano's premiere monthly publication. In those five years, we've grown and changed, and seen the city grow and change too - it's an exciting time to be at the helm of this magazine, and as your neighbor, I can say unequivocally that it's a very exciting time to be in Pompano Beach! This month, our cover story features a festive guide to just some of the many holiday events going on in our environs. Get some great tips on dressing for the holidays without either (a) sweating in true winter gear or (b) overdoing the bling. Not a fan of the traditional holiday swirl? Charlotte Sundquist's right there with you - and she's got some encouraging words for the humbugs among us. Whatever you do this month, take a moment to celebrate our good fortune for living in this great city. Enjoy!

A Festive Saturday in December

December 12 Big Makk at Club Cinema Born and raised in Kissimmee, FL, Big Makk was introduced to the DJ scene at a very young age where he began to take up spinning records at the age of 13. From there it evolved into actually experimenting and learning to make hip-hop beats which evolved into what he is today. Down the road he eventually teamed up with a group of like-minded individuals and started a night called Shake N Bass which is still run to this day in Orlando, FL. This party was able to push a new sound and eventually cause national attention with blogs like THUMP writing an article about the party. From there Big Makk was able to take the sound and experience around Florida and eventually the country. On the music side of things his skill level and talent has resulted in releases on some of the most prominent labels in the music scene today including Main Course, Mad Decent, Dim Mak, T&A, Sol Selectas, and Slow Roast. His style of production can be heard across wide array of different genres with really no boundaries. His different styles of music plays into his sets as well providing a little bit of something for everyone in the crowd. For more information, visit facebook.com/OfficialClubCinema.

Holiday food, decorations, and pets: a not so festive combinaton Tinsel and cats: no, no, no While tinsel is not poisonous to cats, it is very dangerous. Cats who ingest tinsel are at grave risk and may - at best - require extensive surgery. If you've got kitties, your best bet is to have a tinsel-free tree.

That puppy may be eyeing the ham bone Yes, we know, they're adorable. What's not so adorable, though, is if Fido gets ahold of the ham bone - or chicken bone, or drumstick, or any other sort of bone. These can splinter once eaten, with exactly the consequences you'd expect. Best to keep your pet's diet as normal as possible during the holidays, in any event.

Dressing in the spirit of the winter season We won’t find anyone that will feel sympathy for us as we gather for our hometown holiday celebrations in Pompano Beach, where a cold day is considered around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. But how can we stay true to those holiday-season traditions like leather boots and fur winter coats? Do you ever miss them? Fear not, there are warm-weather alternatives that can be substituted for their cold-weather counterparts: SCARVES Choose a silk or cotton scarf instead of a cashmere version. They can be worn in festive colors, over long flowing layers. THE SWEATER DRESS Swap that sweater dress for a floaty fabric maxi or mini. This is where materials matter here, and so does a light color. Black is usually a staple color during most of the year, but during the holidays it may not be the best choice. Opt for colors like burgundy, blue, gold, green, or red. For a more hip, unique look, wear a silk slip dress with a long cardigan and belt. Pair the look with masculine looking shoes, like a tough looking, high-heeled bootie. FUR WEATHER COAT Substitute the thick fur jacket for a lightweight pea coat in red, black, plaid, or even tan. A crop jacket in tweed or brocade is also a nice choice, worn with everything from jeans to skirts, and it can go from day to night.

BOOTS Boots, especially of the short, ankle variety, are all the rage during the season. Wear a pair of skinny jeans tucked into a pair of ankle booties that come in a floral print or patent leather. Peep toe booties are a perfect substitute for Uggs. Other choices to use as substitutes for winter boots are platform granny heel boots with ribbon laces, floral combat boots, and utility boots with plenty of extra buckles. ACCESSORIES Add a chunky colorful or crystal statement necklace to black clothes or on top of colors. When you wear it with a T-shirt and jeans, you will look fabulous for any hometown holiday party. This is a great substitute for adding flare to outfits with embellished sweaters. Refrain from wearing your chunky necklaces every day. Reserve them for special occasions; they are focal points and can really make a statement. LEGGINGS Leggings are a staple in most wardrobes and can be a great alternative to a pair of jeans. Most of us can’t live without them, even in the heat. Opaque leggings can look edgy and fresh, but sheer tights are sleek and sophisticated and are better for the warm weather. Sequins and lace leggings are great during the festive season and can be worn with a longer T-shirt or jacket.

The month of December can bring about some pretty amazing things and is considered the most wonderful time of the year. Families gather, gifts are exchanged, meals are shared, and parties are thrown. The annual soirée can be fun and a little chaotic, but no matter how hectic your festive season turns out to be (or whatever celebration you have planned for the holidays), always remember—there IS an outfit for that!

More beautiful ways to dress for the occasion...

Special Thanks to Body & Soul Boutique In preparation for this feature, we whiled away a good hour on a stormy Saturday afternoon, combing through pretty much every item in this lovely shop. The items pictured above were our favorite picks for festive holiday dressing. Stop by the store, open Monday-Saturday, at 2430 North Federal Highway in Lighthouse Point. Enjoy! 12 Pompano Today December 2015

All that glitters

ll that glitters is not golden… I’m all for a little well-placed dazzle but there are times that you need to step away from the sparkle, dangle and shine. Believe me – I get the saying, she who leaves a trail of glitter is never forgotten. But there are times you need to dull your light – figuratively of course – never spiritually!

1 2 3 4

On the job – save those stunning, flashy heels for another time of day. The office environment – regardless of the casual, funky nature – is really not the venue for shimmer – save it. First dates – okay – this one is dicey – he asked you out because he likes who you are…but head to toe sparkle is a little much. You can throw in a piece here and there – maybe pair the sequin skirt with a more casual top or dial in the flashy heels - but keep your ensemble neutral and muted. Meeting the in-laws….you may think – hey, they should get to know the real me – why try to hide my light….well, I get the thought process – but consider things from their perspective and tone it down. A funeral – leave the dangly earrings at home – this is a somber occasion and not the time to insist on drawing attention to yourself. Unless you are celebrating the zeitgeist and style of the deceased because they believed that there can never be enough glitz and glamour….just don’t.

I know, I know – every girl was born with glitter in her veins and we should never, ever let anyone dull our sparkle. Every now and again we need to self-edit our own sheen – shimmering is always preferable to gaudiness.

The skinny on sequins Sequins are the embodiment of the "less is more" philosophy. The scarf, left, is the perfect accent piece for a plain white shirt - it's a nod to a festive occasion that doesn't overpower. According to the Smithsonian, these shiny disks go all the way back to King Tut and, for a time in more recent history, were made not of precious metals but gelatin. Yes, really. And yes, they were subject to melting.

A good marriage: past, present and future

R M

ecently my family went on a mini-vacation. We were at the beach and I was able to spend a large amount of time with my husband and kids completing my favorite activity: Shelling. Well, while shelling, there is an abundance of time to talk. Although that weekend there was much talk about current happenings, there were also reflections shared from the past.

y husband and I shared the story of how we met with the children (a story they have heard many times before). We reflected back on the birth of the children, and told the children of events that occurred when they were babies. The children were all very interested in the stories and asked many questions so the stories went on and on.

I realized that although there have been bad times, we have had way more good times.

O

n our last day on the beach I thought about the conversations we had that weekend. I realized that although there have been bad times, we have had way more good times. I felt very fulfilled after this realization.

About the Staffords Dr. Gina and Jim Stafford have been married for over 15 years. Throughout that time they had four beautiful children – all boys!!! Over the course of their relationship they have faced ups and downs, especially since three out of the four sons were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Despite the obstacles that came their way, their marriage has grown stronger. People who know the couple always ask how they do it. The answer is that with hard work and faith anything is possible. The couple decided to share their story, their strategies, and their lives with other couples to assist them in building a relationship just as strong as their own. Each month, we bring you their words of wisdom, devoted to helping couples explore the many issues facing marriages today. Read more about this engaging couple at maritalminutes.com.

How does one know whether or not they have a good marriage?

I

always have asked myself: How does one know whether or not they have a good marriage? Not all times will be good - all marriages need work. My husband said that his measure was provided by his grandfather – if more than 50% of the days are good then it is a good marriage. While I think there is truth in that estimation, I think that I have another measure: Stories.

A HOMETOWN HOLIDAY: THE EDUCATION STAYCATION A few months ago I wrote about educational staycations and I think it would be appropriate to build on the staycation idea for this month’s theme of A Hometown Holiday. After all, I can’t think of many better gifts than spending the holidays with people we care about while enjoying some of our local attractions. For most students in the Broward County Public Schools system, their Hometown Holiday starts December 21st, with classes resuming Monday January 4, 2016. In hindsight, when I wrote about educational staycations I should have provided some sort of learning activity to complete at each location. In this article, I will not make the same mistake. Since there are so many wonderful places to visit, the learning activity provided is general enough to use at most locations, yet designed to make each location meaningful. When I taught Social Studies I used a powerful strategy that required students to make the following connections as they read: text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world. My goal for using this strategy was for students to make a deeper and more authentic connection to what they read. Accordingly, I built on the aforementioned text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world reading strategy to create a tool for you to use on your Hometown Holiday learning experiences; just replace the word text with whatever the location is. For example, when your travels take you to the Hillsboro Lighthouse you can experience the location through: Lighthouse-to-self, Lighthouse-to-another location, and Lighthouse-toworld. I love the Hillsboro Lighthouse and for the sake of good teaching, I want to

quickly take you through how to use the strategy or in “teacher language”, I want to model the strategy. When connecting the Lighthouse-to-myself, I wanted to add a picture to my local adventure’s photo album. Accordingly my wife and I climbed the stairs to the top of the lighthouse and took a “selfie”. To us, taking a “selfie” during our travels has become a big part of our memory making, thus connecting the location to self, although the most memorable part of that day was the near panic attack my wife had halfway up the staircase. I am fond of the Barefoot Mailman story, so when connecting location-to-location, I connected the Barefoot Mailman statue at the lighthouse to other locations I visited that had a Barefoot Mailman statue. I encourage you to learn more about the Barefoot Mailman story if you don’t already know it and then look for the statues yourself. Without giving too much away, there is a statue at the Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area on Hypoluxo Road and one in front of the Town of Hillsboro Beach Police Department on A1A. Lastly, connecting the Lighthouse to the world, I learned that in the late 1800s Congress deemed construction of the lighthouse necessary to safely guide vessels through the Florida straits into the Gulf of Mexico and the light was kept off during World War II. As you can see, applying this strategy to my Hillsboro Lighthouse visit made it more meaningful and a deeper learning experience for me. I know this seems simple, so why not try it? It will make your visit a more meaningful learning experience. //BY MICHAEL DIPIERRO

Michael's Top Three Fun Family Outings, and where to find more Now that you have a learning activity, the next step is to figure out where to visit. Since I have already dedicated an article to recommended locations, I am just going to give my top three and a link for you to discover your own places to visit. My three recommendations are: • • •

the Kester Cottages at Founder's Park in Pompano Beach the South Florida Railway Museum in Deerfield Beach the Hillsboro Lighthouse in Hillsboro Beach.

For more ideas, spend some time searching Broward County's website, which lists a treasure trove of local resources: brow ard. org / A r t s / R e s ou rc e s / Cu ltu r a l D i re c tor y / Pa ge s / ListByDiscipline.aspx?discipline=Historical%20Societies.

Michael DiPierro has a decade of experience in education. He currently holds a Master's degree in Educational Leadership and is an Instructional Specialist with Broward County Public Schools.

smiling faces

ď ľď ľa delightful morning at K.I.D.S Early Learning Experience

Joanne Charles (photo, left) greets us with a big smile and infectious enthusiasm. In the background, we hear children break into sound - and a sweet sound it is. Born and raised nearby (she's a Pompano Middle and Northeast alum), Joanne's been at K.I.D.S Early Learning Experience for seven years. As the school's director, she's very proud of their Apple Accreditation and Broward County Five Star rating. But what is obvious from the minute we arrive is that what Ms. Charles is most proud of is the smiles on the faces of every child we see. K.I.D.S. Early Learning Experience accepts children from the age of six weeks to five years (they are a VPK provider). Her personal tagline, she tells us, is "Making kids happy...I wake up wanting to make kids happy." "I can't stress how much I love our teachers," she tells us, as we embark on a tour. Some of the teachers, she notes, have been with the school since it opened. The school's brochure mentions that "Our teachers are nurturing, dedicated and patient and have a great rapport with children and parents." Indeed, every interaction we observe among both Joanne as well as the staff - from children to prospective parents calling to inquire about the school, to moms, dads and grandparents dropping children off - is unfailingly positive and, one might say, joyful. In every classroom, in the playground, and at lunch - these are some happy, engaged kids. Just take a look at the faces below. We dare you not to smile. K.I.D.S. Early Learning Experience is located at 132A SE 11th Avenue in Pompano Beach.

Smart Holiday Car Shopping his time of year, many of us are busy decorating our homes, buying and wrapping gifts and opening our homes for family and friends. Many of us are also either decorating our vehicles for Christmas, adding a wreath or bow on the grill, putting a Christmas fragranced potpourri in the car or just thinking of gifting ourselves or a loved one a car for the holidays.

T

Honda vehicles dominated the market, demonstrating consistent reliability and performance. We also have some domestic cars that have been worthy of mention. Here are today’s most noteworthy cars to purchase. Notice, we mentioned the family/brand of car but the best one would be the one we deem best to purchase. Happy Hanukkah!

Whatever you celebrate, let's make 2016 the year that we embrace peace on earth, and goodwill to all.

your city charlotte's web

The true meaning of the season Ah....the holiday season. Since I am usually in the habit of writing commentaries, I feel that in this instance I should put a disclaimer before you read my article this month. (*Note: The musings on this particular page of Pompano Today are reflecting the thoughts and ramblings of Charlotte only. We believe that most of the population will generally not agree with her, nor do we expect them to.) When I think about holidays, Norman Rockwell images come to mind. Children sitting underneath Christmas trees, glazed hams perched in the center of a large dinner table, and a plethora of other images depicting a general aura of happiness and good cheer. Bah. Humbug. I just don't buy it anymore, so stop trying to convince me. While I love the idea and the concept, it seems to put an awful lot of pressure on all of us nontraditional people. I moved to South Florida 30 years ago, beginning a new stage in my life when I thought I would act like a grown up. I packed the few possessions I had into a Volkswagen Rabbit, and made that long drive down the east coast of the United States. Being in such a transient area, many of you can relate, I know am not alone. It meant that I left my friends and family members 1,500 miles behind me in the rear view mirror. I wasn't thinking about six months into the future, and what my plans would be for Christmas day. I was just excited to get to my college dorm and unpack. That first year away, I did not have the good fortune of going back to my hometown to spend time with my family. Frankly, I'm not even sure what I did. But somewhere along the line, my hometown became wherever I was. While I originally felt like I should have been participating in one of those picture perfect paintings during the last few months on the calendar, I began to appreciate what I had, and the people who surrounded me and supported me at those times in my life. Reflecting back, I attended a holiday party with a pink theme, only because the hosts thought "the colors red and green were so played out". I have spent one on one time with friends sitting on the beach sharing too many bottles of wine. I have been invited to many different religious and non-religious ceremonies, and appreciated and respected the individuals who had invited me to participate. I have danced in drum circles, and sung out of key while standing next to a piano played by a man wearing a gold sequined vest. I do not participate in Black Friday buying frenzies, and have never felt the need to run up my credit cards, only to experience that buyer’s

remorse after the onset of the coming of the new year. These are new trending traditions that I don't feel the need to latch on to. My holiday this year I will be able to welcome my mother, my stepfather, and their dog into my home. We may cook something. We may not. Maybe we'll decide to go out to a restaurant and let someone else do it for us. I may even make a couple of handmade cards to express how happy I am to have them with me.

As with all the seasons before this one, I plan to appreciate the moments as they happen, enjoying the time with whomever is in my life at that time. But does it really matter? I've never given it much thought. As with all the seasons before this one, I plan to appreciate the moments as they happen, enjoying the time with whomever is in my life at that time. My holiday wishes will be simple. A little less pressure to replicate a traditional holiday, and a simple request to not let it rain if we end up at the beach.

Happy Holidays to you, however you decide to spend them!

Hayley Gripp is a multi-talented natural red headed all American Actress, brand ambassador and philanthropist. She made her debut in the industry in 2012 as a print model, landing national ads for brands such as “Verizon Wireless” and “As Seen On TV.” As an actress, Hayley has shot multiple commercials, has been a celebrity taste tester on Cupcake Wars, landed prominent roles on: “CSI: Las Vegas," the Lifetime original series “Killer Kids” and a role in the Lionsgate feature film “The Vatican Tapes”. She is set to begin filming “The Kodex” in Toronto in early 2016. Gripp is a nationally published writer, with her most recent article published in “Simply Gluten Free” Magazine. In her free time Hayley is also a professional holistic vegetarian chef, and her cooking has been featured on live cooking segments, including the San Diego Channel 6 News. Hayley prides herself on her philanthropy work and many charitable endeavors that include: the title of Youth Ambassador and a Young Adult Board Member for the “Tourette Association America”, the title of Female National Spokesperson for “The Stop Bullying Now Foundation” and in her home town of Los Angeles, Hayley avidly supports “The Covenant House California” and “A Place Called Home”. Hayley has spoken to over 45,000 people across the country about the bullying epidemic with our youth, and played a prominent role in getting the I.D.E.A. Act passed in Washington DC. As a representative and brand ambassador for “The Organic Face” cosmetics, Hayley has collaborated directly with the CEO Noreen Diani to help empower young girls through the education of healthy skincare as well as positive self-esteem. Hayley is also currently working as brand management and blogging as “The Organic Ginger” for The Organic Face, in the hopes to educate others about the brand and the health benefits of living an organic sustainable lifestyle.

Before we begin, congrats on your success with "The Kodex", recent billboard covers and philanthropy work. Tell us more about these projects and what you did to prepare for them and how they have changed your life... When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act? Have you ever just known you were meant to do something? As a child, every time I saw a camera, I knew I belonged in front of it. Some of my earliest memories were putting on skits for family and friends. What inspires you to act, produce, and write? Everything around me inspires me to be creative. I write every day. I think it keeps me sane with my busy schedule! Producing is definitely fun because you get to see everything behind the scenes that goes into a project, as for acting that is where my heart is. When did you realize you had reached your goals as an actor? I think I am still growing and evolving as an actor every day. Once I reach a goal in my career, I reach for another one. This keeps me driven. What was your favorite role to date and why? It will sound funny, but I loved playing a possessed girl in the Lionsgate Film “The Vatican Tapes”. It was incredible to challenge myself as an actor and put myself outside of my comfort zone. What do you enjoy most about your career? I love that my career brings me new experiences. No day is the same as the last, and that is an incredible gift. Can we expect a book from you? Currently I am writing a comedic coffee table book for adults, but you won’t see a book on my life story until I have a few more adventures. What is the best way for your fans to know what you’re working on? Facebook/Twitter? Do you post for your own sites or do you have your assistants do the posts? I have to be honest and say that I cheat on twitter with Instagram! When things get crazy, I have extra help for certain tasks. But I always handle my own social media, as I love the personal interaction with fans. Tell us something new, something bold that you’ve never told any other magazine…news tip. My hair is natural red. I refuse to dye it for any role. To keep it vibrant I do an at home remedy (1TBS organic cranberry juice + 1tsp apple cider vinegar. I place in a spray bottle, spray on my hair and lie in the sun for two hours).

GET SMART

your business working it

Yes, you deserve a holiday I know that you don’t want to believe it (nor do I) but the holiday season is here! It’s really officially now. Last month they were teasing us with holiday displays, lights and ideas but now it’s 100% full throttle. As a business owner, I am excited about this holiday season because for the first time EVER I am taking an official holiday (as they say overseas) – like everyone else does. Did you know that your business would survive if you take some time off? Did you know that if you prep your clients in advance that they will understand? Did you know that you could delegate (I know it’s tough) some tasks to your employees? Let’s jump in and get you on a much-needed holiday!

You’ll Be Happy You Did The guilt will slowly start to fade and so will the stress and worry. You’ll get to a point when you start to realize that it’s out of your hands now. Trust that things will be fine and that your clients are being serviced. Use this time to reflect on what you want and spend time doing just that. Before you know it you’ll be back in the office and back to the grind. Sit back, relax and enjoy what little time you do have during this holiday season. Trust me, you’ll be happy you did! Plan To Succeed If you don’t start planning now, it will never happen. Solopreneurs get your work done ahead of time and let your clients know that you are taking some time off and will be available for emergencies only (be clear on that). Entrepreneurs start prepping your employees on their roles and responsibilities while you’re away. Write lists; create reminders, processes and tasks. Do whatever is necessary to have a little piece of mind. Let them know that you will be available for emergencies only (be clear and stick to it).

are fearful that you will be missing out on an important email, text or piece of information – schedule 1 hour during each day during your holiday to check in with work and peruse your emails. Make it clear to those around you that this is the only time you will be doing this and stick to it. Try and do it earlier in the day before everyone gets up or at lunch. Be firm, be fair and be respectful of others around you.

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) Yes, it’s difficult not being able to check your phone every 5-10 minutes but it’s necessary to be a better person, a better boss and to keep your sanity. If you //BY TEANA MCDONALD
