Jim suffered from severe osteoarthritis in his left knee. He tried cortisone shots and other therapies, but the pain kept coming back. Then he went to the Joint Replacement Center at Broward Health North, where he finally got exactly what he needed: the expertise of his doctors, combined with the precision of Robotic Joint Surgery. The result was a less invasive form of partial knee replacement. Within only days of the surgery, Jim was walking unassisted. And amazed at how quickly he was back in full swing.

Jim never heard of Robotic Joint Surgery. Now he’s thrilled he had it. Robotic Joint Surgery Learn more about this innovative procedure at BrowardHealth.org/BHN or call 954.786.6635

November notes

While putting this issue together, we must have been receiving some subconscious messages from many of our contributors. Teana King McDonald asks "are you really flying?"; Charlotte Sundquist reminds us that air travel is something to remain in awe, and appreciation, of; Jay Ghanem inspired us by sharing some exciting news about flying cars. Well, we thought to ourselves. Perhaps it's time for us to make the leap too - although this was no more than a skip over a puddle compared to a flying car (!) - but you'll notice we've done some redesigning this month. The familiar is comfortable, to us as well as you - but, just like our own homes need a top-to-bottom-cleaning on a regular basis, so, too, do our publications. We hope you like the new look - drop us an email, comment on our Facebook page or website - or send us a Tweet. We're always interested in your feedback! Enjoy November, particularly the early part - the last calm before the storm of holiday festivities. We'll see you next month!

Packing for Two Climates in One Trip Some of you that travel often may have packing for your trip down pat. When you are heading out for a ski trip to Aspen, you stuff your suitcase with ski pants and warm clothes. When you are visiting the sandy beaches of the Bahamas, you throw in bathing suits, shorts, and tank tops. Pretty easy stuff! Not much thought. But what happens when you are going from the frigid Aspen Mountains straight to the sunny beaches of the Bahamas all in one trip? I know that there is that moment of panic: How can I possibly fit it all in—sweaters, shorts, jeans and shoes for every occasion? With the packing tips and tricks below, you can be prepared for any type of weather without incurring additional baggage fees: Tip #1: Dress In Layers When traveling from the tropics to the Arctic over the course of two weeks, layers will be the best way to get the most out of your clothes and the most space out of your suitcase. T-shirts and tank tops are perfect essentials for both men and women. They are perfect for layering and great for any climate. Bring your bathing suit, thermal clothes, and pants, but don’t overdo it. Leave the big bulky jacket at

home and opt for a waterproof coat with a detachable fleece instead. Leggings are great for traveling. They can be folded and stored, they can be layered under pants for extra warmth, or they can help to turn summer dresses into winter looks. Tip #2: Less Is Always More If you are afraid that the recommendations above will leave you with limited outfit choices, it more than likely will, depending on the length of your trip. You will probably have to wear the same thing more than once. Look at the bigger picture: this isn’t as horrible as getting frostbite on your toes because you couldn’t fit your fuzzy warm socks in with the rest of your wardrobe. Tip #3: Shoes: Only Take the Basics It may be a little annoying when you don’t have a pair of shoes for every outfit, but it’s not worth bringing extra pairs at the expense of other clothing that you might need more. Only take the basics – a pair of tennis shoes, simple dress shoes or sandals, and boots that are perfect for staying warm and walking in all environments.

Tip #4: Pick Up Something New also known as "Hello, Italy!" If when you arrive you find that it’s a lot colder or hotter than you expected, you can always buy something new to match the climate. You should be able to find hats, scarves and gloves easily and if they are inexpensive enough, you can donate them or leave them behind for someone else.

And, if it just doesn't fit, pack smart(er) If you follow all the advice recommended above and find there is still not enough room in your suitcase, try rolling your clothes to create more space. This works great and doesn’t wrinkle your clothes. Another option would be to invest in some vacuum-seal bags. Above all, enjoy your trip - because a smile looks good in every climate! //BY ELAINE SIMMONS

Save the Date: Setting the Scene

e found his knee and now you’re over the moon - you want to show & tell everyone just how precious the two of you are with an engagement photo that captures your coupling. Now engagements are a heady time…you may not be thinking exactly straight…what with visions of flowers, cake and reception venues running through your head. But don’t stress over this – it is supposed to be fun – just observe a few guidelines and you’ll be mailing those save-the-dates in no time – cutest couple ever front and center! 1) Be yourself - you may have images of an afternoon of fun and frolic in an open field – swirling and twirling in your cutest sundress…but is that really you and your fiancé? Think about who you are as a couple and choose your backdrop location accordingly. The scene will speak to the theme and outfit choices for the day. 2) Don’t lock yourself in time – beware the trendiest outfit or anything that feels costumey – you will want to look back on these photos and have an air of always and forever - not a feeling of being frozen in time. 3) Flatter yourselves – it may be chilly outside but that bulky scarf does just what it sounds like it does – it adds heft. Keep your dimension streamlined consider a V-neck top – they elongate and flatter everyone. For him – look to the classic button down – the collar is face-framing and the shirt has the same lengthening outcome as the V-neck does for your soon to be bride. 4) Change it up – bring along a change of clothes – don’t be afraid to take pictures with two different looks. If you start your day in your Sunday best – switch it up and finish with a more casual look have him bring a blazer even if you think you’ll only take the laid-back pics – you never know. 5) Color – keep it bright and preferably sans patterns – this mirrors the timeless recommendation and color looks just as good in black and white photos as it does CMYK…the same cannot be said for black and white clothing. Figuring out what to wear for your engagement photo shoot shouldn’t be a chore – if you feel good in what you have on, the more relaxed you will be, and that will shine through at your session.

Why this is a great "Save the date" photo • The pose is relaxed and natural - be yourselves! • The setting has an air of "always and forever" • Her V-neck top and his classic button down. How do you know when you've found "the one"?

R

ecently I was speaking with a woman who was getting married in a week. She was very excited discussing the plans for the reception. I was very happy for her because she seems as if she truly found the “one”. During the conversation she asked how I met my husband.

My husband and I met in college. We had different majors, but happened to cross paths in a science class (astronomy, to be exact). Our first astronomy class came and went, but in the second class I noticed this guy looking at me, but I did not say anything and went about my business. When the third class came I was asked to sit by him and his friends. A few days later we went on our first date; however, I was apprehensive about this venture because he was very different than anyone else I had ever dated.

He was a very nice guy, but he was not the "typical guy" I dated. And I told him that. On our first “official date” he joined me for dinner with my family and then we went out with his other friends to play pool. When the night came to a close he asked me how I felt for him and I told him that he was just not my “type”. He was a very nice guy, but he was not the “typical guy” I dated. He was very upset when I said this to him. A tear actually came to his eye and he said “but I am going to marry you”. I was set aback by this. I honestly thought he was crazy at this point. As our class progressed I still talked to him and in time he persuaded me to go on a second date with him. The rest of the story is history. I realized that even if he wasn’t the typical guy I dated, that did not mean that the he was not the right man for me. If I was not open minded I may have completely dismissed him and made the greatest mistake of my life.

About the Staffords Dr. Gina and Jim Stafford have been married for over 15 years. Throughout that time they had four beautiful children – all boys!!! Over the course of their relationship they have faced ups and downs, especially since three out of the four sons were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Despite the obstacles that came their way, their marriage has grown stronger. People who know the couple always ask how they do it. The answer is that with hard work and faith anything is possible. The couple decided to share their story, their strategies, and their lives with other couples to assist them in building a relationship just as strong as their own. Each month, we bring you their words of wisdom, devoted to helping couples explore the many issues facing marriages today. Read more about this engaging couple at maritalminutes.com.

fter I relayed my story to the woman she said the story of her and her fiancé was very similar. Her next statement really stuck with me: “It is interesting that the person you think you want may not be the person you need.” Since this discussion I cannot get her statement out of my mind because my husband was not the one I thought that I wanted, but he is the only one I could ever imagine being with – he is the one I need!

SCHOOL GRADES: FILING A FLIGHT PLAN Upon receiving the theme “Come Fly with Me”, my first thought went to “what schools have an Air Force JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps)?” followed by “what schools are aviation themed?”. Having already written about JROTC programs in July 2015, I started making a list of aviation themed schools. After completing the list I decided to write about something that impacts more than just a list of schools. It is not uncommon for school leadership to develop a yearly theme to unite and motivate their students and staff. Although I have never worked at a school that used “Come Fly with Me” as a theme, I think it would be a good one; so let’s use it. So now our theme is set and my school is ready to “Come Fly with Me” into the new academic year, but the question is “to where are we flying?” Every year Florida public schools receive a letter grade (A, B, C, D or F) based on a formula provided by the Florida Department of Education. Keeping the school letter grade in mind one can conclude that we are flying toward an “A”. So how do we get there? By and large, school grades, especially for elementary and middle schools, are based on state standardized test scores. High school grades are also

impacted by standardized test scores, but their formula also factors in other performance indicators such as graduation rates, student participation in “college level” classes, and other data points related to high school achievement. This is an oversimplification of the school grading process, but it helps to explain the amount of standardized testing in our public schools. The list below is not a complete list of all the testing along our journey to the “A”, but it highlights our flight path. It is often debated if the standards-based testing approach is in the best interest of our students, but this is not the platform for that debate. However, if you are interested in learning more about the school accountability process, state standardized testing, and the K-12 school curriculum offered in Florida, please visit the links provided. So whether a school is “Soaring to New Heights”, “Sailing the High Seas”, or using our “Come Fly with Me” theme, the perceived success of a school, its teachers, and its students is greatly influenced and determined by factors set forth in this short article. //BY MICHAEL DIPIERRO

A brief sampling of Florida standardized tests: the Air Traffic Control System As students “Come Fly with Me”, they will be challenged with the following tests along their journey to destination “A":

Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) are based on the following: • Florida Standards in English Language Arts (LAFS) and Mathematics (MAFS). Students will take the FSA in English Language Arts in grades 3-11 and Mathematics during grades 3-8. Assessment of the MAFS during a student’s high school journey will be through endof-course assessments for Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. • Other end-of-course assessments are based on Florida’s Next Generation Sunshine State Standards; these assessments include Biology 1, Civics and U.S. History. Michael DiPierro has a decade of experience in education. He currently holds a Master's degree in Educational Leadership and is an Instructional Specialist with Broward County Public Schools.

Kim Spadaro is flying high and loving life

Florida native, luxury fragrance designer, Kim Spadaro has spanned the globe in search for what her soul has needed to survive the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. What does one do after losing their best friend/mother to cancer, ending a 20 year marriage, playing mom to 3 children on her own, recovering from brain surgery, hitting a milestone birthday as a newly single woman and all while maintaining a worldwide fragrance empire in the making? Well...they EAT. PRAY. LOVE very much like Kim Spadaro filling her quest for this most specific soul food. An inspiration to us all on the obvious notion of strength, Kim Spadaro has spread her free-spirited wings and created a new life for herself midlife. Throughout her travels she's absorbed culture, people, and all of the magnificent company encountered along the way. Bottling her experiences up into unique scents that spritz each story, Kim truly represents the spirit of adventure. By loving hard, playing hard and keeping an open heart and open mind without judgment along the way, Kim's storyboard of success has skyrocketed in both love and life. Kim Spadaro captivates every audience she touches. Read more about Kim's many layers of EAT. PRAY. LOVE and what that means as a driving force of success and untamed spirit. She's mastered this formula through the power of travel!

When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to design fragrances? I started my brand out of passion for aromatherapy and perfume. With no prior experience in the field, I started mixing drops of essential oils I would collect from previous trips abroad. I studied aromatherapy to become an aromatherapist. I loved using oils from plants to heal and to aid in giving cancer patients an aromatic uplift to help with their symptoms, such as easing nausea and anxiety. I experimented with home scents, creating individual home fragrances for friends and families. I want to inspire people; I want to transport them to places they have only dreamed of. Once I started receiving orders from friends and family, orders that I couldn’t keep up with, I knew I had something special. So, my vision evolved and my dream began. I immersed myself into hours of research, reading and making critical contacts in New York. I joined every organization you can imagine, networking as much as I could. Every day was a new day to conquer. What inspires you? The world inspires me, people, their culture, food, soil, architecture, and music... I develop each scent based on my life, experiences, and moments in time so lovely that they are embedded in my heart. As a visionary and alchemist, it’s poetic to pull memories together into a blend, a scent, and create a work of art. Just as if I was to paint a scene on canvas, each scent has its own artistic style. Spadaro fragrances are unique, not mass market. I think of them as having a soul, a life, and a living purpose.

When did you realize you had reached your goals as a designer? I am continually setting goals for myself. It’s never ending. My source of strength comes from my roots. Staying focused and always believing in myself keeps me grounded. A predominant milestone was when I launched with Nordstrom Nationally in the U.S. This put Spadaro on the map of fragrances. It was probably the most trying time. Years later I pulled away

write but would certainly need a writer to pull many stories together. The funniest things have happened that you just wouldn’t believe. I have a journal of personal quotes that I keep up with and refer back to. My life is an open book, what you see is what you get. My journeys include love, laughter and friendships…they include adventures, escapades and romances. What a story on you and your brain tumor! You strike us as a woman who always sees the glass 1/2 full or ready for a refill (LOL)...How would you say that incident affected your life for the better? Any advice for others with life-changing health circumstances or terminal illnesses? Last year I was unexpectedly diagnosed with a benign tumor in the lining of the brain. Dr. Wharen and a multidisciplinary team of experts from The Mayo Clinic successfully removed the tumor and saved my olfactory nerve. As an alchemistfragrance designer this brain tumor could have impacted my sense of smell and taste and could have detoured my life…my passion, my career. One year later and my sense of smell is even more sharpened and intensified. I always see the good side in everything. Why think negatively when a positive mind will give you the strength to keep pushing? Never give up. I know we learn this as a young child growing up, but this really comes into play later in life, as well. Follow your passion, your dreams and make the best out of any situation. Something positive always comes into play as we learn from our obstacles. I am unstoppable and continued my journey of healing, self-discovery, relationship building, and research throughout the globe.

from Nordstrom, away from the mass brands and stayed within my niche category, once again staying focused on who I am. This was a big decision for me; the learning experience was one I will never forget and one of the best decisions I have made in my business. What is your favorite product to date and why? Noche Del Fuego was developed from a sexy dance from the Island of Mallorca off the coast of Spain. Moonlit evening, candles everywhere and dark skinned Spaniards dance around stage surrounded by torches, I was pulled on stage to participate as the Spaniards tossed wands of fire. It was a very sensual, erotic dance and thus became my “Night of Fire” (Noche Del Feugo) - deep spiritual scent that turned out to be an aphrodisiac, a lover’s potion. This has been the one closest to my heart. What do you enjoy most about your career? If I can touch someone’s heart, mind and soul, inspire him or her in any way I have done my job. It is rewarding to get emails, letters from strangers about how my fragrance romanced their marriage or how I helped motivate them to follow their hopes and dreams; [maybe it made it possible to take] up a life’s wish of learning a new language, enrolling in cooking school, learning a musical instrument or even possibly transporting them to a beautiful place they only dreamt of and then taking the journey. I am the happiest when I know I have inspired, brought passion back and lifted spirits. Can we expect a book from you? You are not the first person who has asked that. Many requests are coming in. I definitely see a book in my future. I love to

In-Flight Dining

OK so, no - this is not, of course, an image of what awaits you in Economy class. First class meals (on those airlines which offer a first-class cabin) are, in many cases, quite civilized - hot towels and fine china included. In addition, there has been a marked improvement in many major airlines' culinary offerings, although most of us will, of course, have to shell out funds. The food's really not bad, though - honest! And if you haven't flown in awhile, be warned: Many airlines no longer accept cash for in-flight purchase. So come prepared, and enjoy! © miklyxa - Fotolia.com

Come Fly With Me - In My Car!

A

s far back as the 1400s, man has been fascinated by the idea of flying. Da Vinci was inspired and even studied and designed several flying machines. His drawings of birds included notes on lift, stability and steering. He invested years working on a machine but didn’t succeed in having a workable flying machine.

From that time on, man has been looking into the science of flight. There have been many scientists, inventors, investors who have - through an advancement of technology - progressed the science of flight.

20 Pompano Today November 2015

The year 1903 was the lucky year for flight, when Orville Wright - one of the Wright brothers- piloted the first heavier-than-air flying machine. The Wright brothers played an important role and contributed immensely to the science of flight. Imagine, from a bicycle selling and repair business to building a flying machine… now, this is the American dream coming true. Here we are now in 2015, and flying whether for business or pleasure is a no brainer. We even have flown to the moon and back. Yet, many of us would love to have a car that would fly! I remember growing up watching the Jetsons and the Sci-Fi movies showing cars that fly and dreaming of the day where I can walk to my car garage, turn on the engine of my car, decide on a destination, drive a couple of blocks - if needed- unfold the wings and fly away.

There are many predictions that 2017 will prove that if we think it, we can make it. If flying across the pond or over to the next county or state is what we want, then there is hope. Of course, we would have to be rich to afford a flying car.

small airplane. The price of this plane is still not finalized but it will be in the hundreds of thousands of Euros. The company said the car's top speed on the road is at least 99 mph and while flying is at least 124 mph. It can fly for 435 miles before running out of gas.

There are many small companies around the world competing to produce the first flying car to the market. We know that this will be a turning point in the way we drive, the way we fly, and the way we consider distance and proximity. Top two companies come to mind: Terrafugia (pictured above; terrafugia.com/) is a well known American firm that already accepted deposits from customers for their “transition flying” cars. The price isn't set yet but we know that each vehicle will be priced over $100,000. So, we know for a fact that it will be more expensive that the sports car and just below a light sports airplane.

A couple of roadblocks are delaying the flying car presence in our roadways and skies. First, the vehicles have to pass numerous tests to prove they're road ready and fit to fly. Second, getting all the necessary aviation, road and transportation certifications may take some time. Third, these cars have to pass the US aviation and safety regulations. Fourth concern, the drivers/ pilots who are purchasing these vehicles will have to be trained on how to ride/drive/fly and land these vehicles safely. Once all of these hurdles and the cars are ready, we will sure be envious of the rich and famous because they will be the first to be riding in those vehicles. Just remember, one day, I will be calling you to invite you to come, come fly with me!

There are few prototypes in progress, lots are still under research and development or still in the experimental stage but as far as we know, the car will be a two-seater. The style is very futuristic and attractive. Another company, AeroMobil, a Slovakian company (facing page; aeromobil.com/), is claiming to be working on a vehicle that "transforms in seconds from an automobile to an airplane". This vehicle, just like any car, is gas powered, is 20 ft long and has wings that fold, so you can park it in your garage. Their claim to fame is that the car will unfold its wings and take off from any stretch of grass rather than a paved tarmac. It flies through the air like any

your health news from Broward Health North

Why Does My Hand Hurt? Purnell Traverso, MD, Hand Surgeon My finger is painful and it clicks/catches and locks in place. What’s going on? You most likely have a trigger finger although an examination by a doctor will confirm this. What is a trigger finger? A trigger finger (also known as Stenosing Tenosynovitis) is a condition where one (or more) of your fingers gets stuck in a bent position. Many times when trying to straighten the finger out, it snaps open with pain, like a trigger being pulled and released. Why does it get stuck and snap open? There are two tendons that travel together that allow our fingers to bend. The tendons pass under a series of pulleys, like a train going through a series of “tunnels”. In this condition, the covering of the tendon swells at the level of one of those pulleys, and there is more “tendon tissue” going under the pulleys (like a large train going through a small tunnel). There is constant irritation as the tendons rub the sides of this pulley resulting in worsening inflammation at the area.

When can I use my hand after surgery? Usually after surgery you are placed in a hand dressing with fingers and thumb free. I encourage full use of the hands right after surgery while in the dressing as much as possible. Three days after surgery, you take the dressing off at home and use your hand for everything and anything. My only restriction is to keep the stitches clean and dry. You follow-up in the office in about 1-2 weeks post op, the sutures are removed at two (2) weeks post op, and I encourage you to use, use, and use your hand.

During the night, many of us unconsciously sleep with our fingers bent. The tendon becomes compressed in one area under the pulley for a long time. Because the tendon has fluid within it, the fluid is displaced and the tendon swells around the pulley. In the morning, the finger is very stiff as the bump or swelling in the tendon has difficulty fitting through the pulley. As the finger is straightened, the ball “pops” through the pulley causing a clicking/catching/triggering sensation.

Will I need therapy after surgery? Most people do not need therapy, as their normal daily activities will force them to do all the therapy they need. However, some people are still afraid to use their hand and the concern is stiffness and decreased range of motion. Those patients will begin early occupational therapy by a certified hand therapist.

What do I do now? The rationale behind treating this condition is to decrease the inflammation around the lining of the tendon at the area of the pulley. There are various options from nonoperative to operative. What is the least invasive option? If the condition has been present for a few weeks to a few months, usually a cortisone injection is recommended. This helps to decrease the inflammation and swelling of the lining of the tendon, and this may be enough to give long-standing relief. A splint preventing movement of the middle knuckle (the proximal interphalangeal joint), to sleep in during the nights only, for about 3-6 nights, is usually recommended. The steroid may take 4-7 days to begin working. Most times that may be all that is needed. In addition, taking anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. ibuprofen – speak with your doctor to make sure this drug is safe for you to take) is also recommended. Visits to a certified hand therapist for tendon gliding exercises and other strategies such as ultrasound at the pulley may also be helpful in some patients. What happens if the steroid injection does not work? Can I get another steroid injection? Sometimes the inflammation is too much for the steroid to effectively treat well. If that is the case, I do not give another injection for a minimum of three months. Too much steroid can damage tendons, and possibly even cause the tendons to rupture. I am very careful not to put the flexor tendons at risk. If the steroid injection is not effective, and there is marked pain still present, a surgical release may be necessary. This is an outpatient procedure (no admission to the hospital overnight). The procedure itself usually takes about 5-10 minutes, and patients are sedated/asleep. A small incision is made right at the level of the pulley and the tendon is identified. Care is taken not to damage the important digital nerves and vessels close by or the tendons themselves. The pulley is opened and the tendon is freed from being “squeezed”. The tendon itself is NOT damaged during the procedure.

Can this come back after the release? While it does occasionally happen, it is very unusual for a trigger finger to return once it has been surgically released. (THEN) Although this photograph of what is today Pompano Beach Air Park is undated, it appears to have been taken soon after its construction in 1943. The photograph is looking east, with Dixie Highway at the bottom of the image and Federal Highway just above the air field; there is little other evidence of development visible. The air field was built as a satellite field for torpedo bomber pilots training at the Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station (now Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport) allowing them to practice "mock" carrier landings. The City of Pompano Beach obtained the airport from the federal government in August 1947, under the provisions of the Surplus Property Act of 1944. It is one of three general aviation airports in Broward County.

(NOW) In October 2014, Ricondo & Associates and KimleyHorn and Associates presented the Business Plan for the Pompano Beach Airpark (Airport) to the City of Pompano Beach to assist in the planning and programming for capital investment, management, and land use decisionmaking as it relates to the City’s overall strategic plan for the Airport (you can read the full report here: http:// pompanobeachfl.gov/assets/docs/pages/public_works/ PMP%20Business%20Plan%20Final%20clean-USE.pdf ). According to the plan, the Airport’s total calendar year 2013 economic impact was estimated to be approximately $54,643,000. Airplanes are wonderful. Really. Like many people, my job requires that I fly. A lot. So it’s appropriate that I’m currently sitting in Seattle airport typing away on my laptop keyboard and writing about traveling. I like to think that I’ve got the packing skills down to a science, and I always smile at those nice TSA Precheck employees. Little things like not having to take my shoes off going through security make me giddy with delight. It’s so easy to criticize airlines, and get frustrated when your checked luggage goes rogue, only to land in a better city than the one you showed up at. Sure, I’ve had flights delayed for hours, even witnessed many an altercation between testy passengers and unsympathetic employees. And don’t get me started on baggage fees.

will catch up on my reading, and possibly meet a fellow traveler who encourages me to visit a new restaurant in my destination city. Or maybe I’ll take the time to write a thank you letter to an old mentor I haven’t reached out to in a while. So the next time your airline experience starts off on a bad note; take a deep breath, relax, and accept the fact that getting aggravated and complaining will not help improve any situation. Make the best of it, and look forward to all the spectacular things that may happen once the plane stops at the arrival gate.

(Current update to last paragraph: I’m on the plane. We’re in the air, but we were late on takeoff by at least an hour.) But, I’ve decided to make this a positive commentary….at least for the next 400 words or so. With all the aggravation currently associated with air travel, it’s still the best way to get us where we need to go, quicker than any option currently available to the average human without wings. As we left Washington State, it was 52 degrees and overcast. Not a great day to catch some quality tanning time. When I arrive in Phoenix, even with our hour delay, I will walk out the door and it will still be 82 degrees and sunny. I’ve made it a high priority to spend at least one hour poolside before the end of the day. (Airplanes are wonderful.) We let ourselves get upset about so many little things that temporarily disrupt our lives and our schedules. Traffic jams, annoying coworkers, and burnt toast. The experience of air travel is just one other easy target for us to lash out at when we’re having a bad day. In reality, how else would it ever be possible for me to leave Miami, and visit a waterfall in Iceland the next day? (The pilot just pointed out the spectacular aerial view of Mount Rainier off to the left of the plane. Now you can’t experience that when traveling on a bus). For me, what it comes down to is a matter of “whatevertude”. I’ve come to accept that I can’t control everything, so it is in my best interest to make a conscious effort to curtail my tendency to lean toward being a self-described control freak. It makes my flights that much more enjoyable, and I always appreciate that I get to my destinations eventually. It doesn’t come easy, mind you….but it works. Whatevertude requires constant effort. (Excuse me one moment; I’m paying the flight member for the cold Alaskan Amber Ale she has just handed me.) I have to fly to Europe soon, which means approximately eight hours of uninterrupted listening to some of my favorite music playlists. I

It’s also clear that she’s got deep roots in the community (see sidebar), and given the resounding success of her family, we get an inkling of both where that energy came from, and what drives her. A Blanche Ely High School graduate, “Our family has always been about community”, Idella tells us. Indeed. A 100 - year presence in Pompano Beach It's fitting to see Idella sharing a laugh with Mayor Lamar Fisher, above. Both can claim deep roots in our city. Mayor Fisher, of course, is the great grandson of one of the signers of our city's charter. Idella has an equally illustrious family tree, starting with her great grandmother, Addie Holloway, one of the founders of the venerable Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church (founded in 1902). Mrs. Holloway passed away in 1970 at the age of about 107. Yes, 107. Idella’s grandfather has owned a charter bus company for the past few years – 45 years, to be precise. Idella’s uncle is Robert Williams (yes, THAT Robert Williams – see Robert L. Williams stadium at Blanche Ely High School). Just more evidence that “six degrees of separation” holds true - alert readers may remember that we had the good fortune to meet Mr. Williams’s daughter, way back in 2011: pompanotoday.com/2011/10/blanche-elyhigh-school-history-in-our-midst/). According to the Sun-Sentinel, “Mr. Williams earned a spot in Ely's athletic history in 1968 when he led a team with dismal prospects for winning more than two games to its first-ever Broward Athletic Conference title, ending the season with an 8-2 record. That same year, Mr. Williams was named the SunSentinel's first Coach of the Year. (Read more here: articles.sun-sentinel.com/1995-03-02/news/9503010698_1_elyhigh-school-mr-williams-pompano-beach.)

GET SMART

your business working it

Are you really flying? Last month I took a HUGE leap and decided to commit to an office space. Am I crazy, maybe a little yes? But, instead of worrying about the “why nots” I am focused on taking a leap, soaring and flying into 2016 with tons of success. I would like you to jump on this flight with me and ask yourself “are you really flying” or “are you just coasting?” Let’s fly together this month and take small (purposeful) steps into the unexpected and soar like never before. Are you ready?

Is it really acceptable to coast through life, through work or through your business? Is It Ok To Coast? Think about that question. Is it really acceptable to coast through life, through work or through your business? If we allowed people in our lives to just coast through life what would the end result be? It’s not too late to make the shift and start flying. Small changes can result in great rewards. Implement a new strategy, go after a new client or pitch your boss on a new idea. Whatever that small shift is for you to get move from coasting to soaring – do it and do it now. Set yourself up in a position to head into 2016 making the shift to soar. Are You Really Flying? Back in my day there was saying that we all threw around, “don’t believe the hype.” What that means is don’t believe what you hear because it could be smoke and mirrors.

Whether you are an employee, Senior Manager or entrepreneur you know right now if you’re flying. You know if you are doing a great job, if you’re moving in the right direction and if you’re on the journey to meet and or exceed your goals. Some of us “talk the talk” and other “walk the walk.” Decide right now which team you’re on and own it or change it. The goal in life is for each and every one of you to fly and achieve what you know to be your vision and purpose (I know it sounds very Oprahish – but you know it’s true). Fly By Example Are there people watching you? Family members, children, or your employees? What do they see? Are you “flying by example”? The best mentors in my circle always set great examples in life and in business. Keep in mind that the mentee does not have to ask you to be their mentor. They can simply just watch from afar and follow your journey (good or bad). Think about your brand, your image and your legacy and what you want that to look like moving forward. Are you proud of the way you “lead” or “manage” people? If you had to ask five people to say five things about you, what would the response be? Remember to fly high to succeed, fly by example to teach, and that flying solo is lonely. //BY TEANA MCDONALD
