January notes

Happy 2016! Since "New Year's resolution" sounds so, well, 2015, we thought we'd focus on "turning over a new leaf " this month. Yes, we know. Wink, wink. It's pretty much the same thing. However, let's put a new spin on this for 2016 - let's resolve to do better every day, every week, every month. Sound too challenging? Rome wasn't build in a day, as they say. This year, rather than focus on those "big ticket", difficult to attain resolutions, focus on making small changes, little by little. As many times as we've heard that, it's really true that it's much easier to take a series of small steps than a few giant leaps. We've got everything you need for a better 2016, including some new features. Follow Jeff as he eats his way through our burgeoning restaurant scene. Read more about The Foundry, Pompano's newest hip restaurant and watering hole. Spend a few moments with the lovely and talented Sarah Benichou, who's ramping up Bailey Contemporary Arts and, indeed, the whole art scene. And, on a more mundane note, eat your veggies - we've got a recipe that will satisfy the most staunch carnivore. Really. Wherever you go, whatever you do, make this month a smashing success! You can do it - we're rooting for you!

Turning over a new fashion leaf: Don't be "The Purple Lady" Most people discover that they need to turn over a new fashion leaf by accident. One lady told me she realized it when she found out her children's friends called her the "Purple lady". By the time you are in your forties, you would have experienced enough trials and errors to know that you are on the right track. However, that track can very easily turn into a fashion comfort zone, and once you are rooted in it, it can be very difficult to think about turning over a new fashion leaf.

Ask yourself the following questions: 1. Do I have a problem with my clothes? What is the problem with my clothes? Do they suit my body type, my personality, my coloring, my life goals and my lifestyle? 2. Are my clothes, accessories, make-up and hairstyle in style, or are they out of date? 3. Do my clothes, accessories, make-up and hairstyle make me feel and look older than I really am? 4. Are they appropriate for my age, social and business responsibilities? 5. Do they say what I want them to say about me to others?

Take these steps to turn over a new fashion leaf: First, take a long hard look at your clothes, make-up, hairstyle and accessories and figure out exactly what you need to change. To make this easy, invest in a Personal Color and Style Consultation or enlist a trusted friend to help you see things as they really are. Second, imagine the wonderful effects a new image will have on you. Doing this will help you to expand your thinking and explore the possibilities of a new look. Decide on a new look and the impression you want others to make about you; and write down the words you would like them to use when they are describing your new look to others: for example, professional, fashionable, happy, youthful, relaxed, elegant, sexy, energetic, etc. This will help you to visualize what looks to experiment with. Also, make a list with words that describe how you DO NOT want to look. When deciding on your new image, consider your actual personality to guarantee you will feel comfortable with your new look. When you change your style to please others and not yourself, you will find the look difficult to live up to and, before you know it, you will return to your old comfortable look. To get ideas about styles that may be appealing to you, search through fashion magazines for images showing how you wish to look or what you may like to wear. Cut out the images and paste them onto a vision board. Go shopping and try on some of those styles. When you are trying things on, remember that fit is important and proper alterations will make a vast difference in the look of any style on you.

Finally, do not make drastic changes to your look overnight. Focus on evolution, not revolution. Making subtle changes over time will help you and others to ease into your new look. Stylish people coordinate outfits that are in sync with their personality, needs and lifestyle; and they understand that looking current does not mean thoughtlessly following fashion. © dankalilly - Fotolia.com

Baby, it's cold outside The date is inked on your calendar – the venue is set – the photographer, florist and caterer have all been reminded of your must-have lists….now it’s time to think about what to toss in that bag for your honeymoon. Thanks to niche travel companies, arctic honeymoons are getting a lot more play these days. Here are some things to consider if you decide to go this route. 1) Outside activity opportunity – what better way to bond with your newly betrothed than skiing or back-country snowmobiling…depending on where you land – you may even have the opportunity to see the Northern Lights. Comfort and warmth must be taken into consideration – right along with your desire to look good for your new spouse. Thanks to the latest in fiber technology, staying warm does not mean adding a ton of bulk to your ensemble – look for thermal performance in your base layer, as well as your outerwear. 2) Cruisin’ – whether it’s through Alaska or the Arctic Sea – if you are honeymooning aboard ship – then your options are wide open – pack according to your evening opportunities while on the boat and take your day excursions into consideration with a layer, layer, layer mantra. A cruise offers the assurance that you can take your shelter indoors while still enjoying a multitude of activities – in this case you can stuff that suitcase with every flattering sweater and pair of pants you own – right along with your cocktail dresses for dancing the night away. 3) By the fire – you are in a winter wonderland – take advantage of the celestial nature of your backdrop and pack that gossamer, alabaster nightgown – even if it’s not cold weather convenient…you’re sure to find some way to stay warm. Gliding through snow-capped forests or sailing over frozen lakes, you and your beloved will enjoy the trip of a lifetime.

YOUR PERFECT WINTER HONEYMOON WARDROBE Above right: Gloves, a chunky knit sweater, a brightly knitted hat, and you're off to the slopes! Left, top to bottom: Pack a darling nightie for those breakfasts in bed. It might be cold outside, but inside is sure to be toasty! pack your most festive cocktail dresses for those intimate nightcaps. Fireplaces are always delightful. Pack for a casual evening kicking back and you'll be all aglow. // BY BENJAMIN'S FINE ALTERATIONS AND TAILORING.

Making resolutions a family affair

ow – it’s 2016! When I thought about the upcoming New Year this year for some reason I reflected back on Y2K. Who could believe that was 16 years ago? At that time I was still a newlywed and was kid free. That year there was so much hustle and bustle surrounding reprogramming computers and clocks that it is hard to forget that particular year. I remember my New Year resolution that year very clearly and it was to lose weight – so many people have that resolution. It seems as if so many New Year resolutions are focused on weight loss or kicking bad habits.

P

rior to 2015, all of my resolutions were personal in nature (most resolutions are), and very rarely did I attain my goal. I became unmotivated and honestly forgot that I even had a resolution come March. Last year my family and I started a new tradition. We decided not to have personal resolutions, but to make resolutions as a family. We sat around the kitchen table and made a list of five items that we would work on together. We put our list of resolutions on a piece of chart paper and hung it on the wall so that we were always reminded of them. This system worked very well because one of my sons is great at reminding us of what the resolutions are and kept us all on track. We even charted our progress on the goals along the way.

Creating resolutions as a family keeps you focused and brings your family closer together

About the Staffords Dr. Gina and Jim Stafford have been married for over 15 years. Throughout that time they had four beautiful children – all boys!!! Over the course of their relationship they have faced ups and downs, especially since three out of the four sons were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Despite the obstacles that came their way, their marriage has grown stronger. People who know the couple always ask how they do it. The answer is that with hard work and faith anything is possible. The couple decided to share their story, their strategies, and their lives with other couples to assist them in building a relationship just as strong as their own. Each month, we bring you their words of wisdom, devoted to helping couples explore the many issues facing marriages today. Read more about this engaging couple at maritalminutes.com.

S

o now that 2015 has ended, you may be asking if we successfully completed all of the items on our list. Honestly, only some of them. We attained our first goal of moving and the attainment of that goal hampered the attainment of other goals because we ended up being separated for a pretty long period of time; however, the lack of attainment of all of our goals from our 2015 list has not decreased our motivation, but increased it for 2016.

T

his year we have made new goals and plan on working very hard as a family to attain them. Not only does creating these items in a group keep you focused; it also brings our family closer together. I am very excited about seeing the outcomes of our group effort at the end of 2016!

A solid plan to do better next time

F

or most students in the Broward County Public School system second quarter interim reports were issued in November and report cards will be sent home in late January. As a teacher, I can remember using these formal performance reports as a platform to encourage my students to “keep up the hard work” and “do better next time”. In essence, I was attempting to motivate my struggling students to turn over a new leaf, which leads me to wonder what it truly means for a student to turn over a new leaf and what factors contribute to this leaf turning moment. Fittingly, my academic leaf turning moment was connected to a less than stellar report card that I received as a middle school student. To the best of my recollection, this report card consisted of mostly the letter “C”, with a lonely “A” in Art. As I tried to use that “A” in Art to lessen my mother’s disappointment in my academic performance, she told me that Art was not important and that I must do better in the “real subjects”. So the next report card I brought home consisted of “A’s” and “B’s” in the “real subjects” and a “D” in the aforesaid “not important” subject of Art.

indicators that the District is creating and strengthening a framework for students to turn over a new leaf has been the focus on continuous student progress monitoring, student tracking of their own learning, and increased differentiated instruction trainings. Additionally, not meaning to get too specific about discipline, but the District has made a major push to increase student achievement through Multi-Tiered System of Supports and a high quality Response to Interventions Process. Broward County Public Schools is the sixth largest school district in the nation and from my perspective I am impressed that a district so populous is making such great strides to impact each individual student. Last, in case you didn’t now, you can follow Broward County Public Schools on Twitter! @browardschools. //BY MICHAEL DIPIERRO

Michael DiPierro has a decade of experience in education. He currently holds a Master's degree in Educational Leadership and is an Instructional Specialist with Broward County Public Schools.

Needless to say, my Eastern European mother did not find any irony in this new leaf I turned. Needless to say, my Eastern European mother did not find any irony in this new leaf I turned. Subsequently, she explained that this report card proved that I could do well in school and my academic performance was connected to the effort that I was willing to put into my coursework. That “D” in seventh grade art was the last time I ever earned a grade lower than a “B”, and I must mention that this streak managed to somehow survive graduate level statistics on my masters degree journey and advanced statistics in pursuit of a doctorate. I cannot claim to know what the academic leaf turning process means to the over 250,000 students attending a Broward County Public School or what will trigger this experience. What I do know is that our teachers and administrators are tirelessly working and committed to increasing student achievement and individualizing education for each student. This is not an easy process and results are not always immediate or clearly evident, but based on my seven years of classroom experience and four years supporting teachers from the district office, I know good things are happening in Broward County Public Schools. To this point, Superintendent Robert Runcie was named Florida's Superintendent of the Year and the District has a new Chief Academic Officer, whose early actions have revealed a commitment to the success of all our students. COVER STORY

Welcome, guests

photos by Paul McDermott Photography

Rick Hamilton throws open the doors of The Foundry "We don't have customers. We have guests," Rick tells us. "When I open the doors at 4:00, I’m opening the door to my house. When you throw a party at your house, you want to make sure the food’s great, the house is immaculate, the cocktails are ready and you have what people want to drink. We’re throwing a little party every shift. I want guests to walk in and see a smile on their faces...when you dine out, you want to escape the real world." The Foundry doesn't have employees, either. Rick is equally passionate about this. They have associates. "I want someone to come in and take ownership. “What if ” are two of my favorite words. What if we did this? What if we tried that?"

We're pretty sure that if you look up both "earnest" and "selfeffacing" in the dictionary, you'll find a photo of Rick Hamilton. You'd probably see it again, as well - maybe under "driven". Rick is the Operations Director of The Foundry, the newest restaurant to join our nascent restaurant scene. Despite its decor harkening back to simpler, even plainer times, this is no plain and simple establishment. Every detail, from the Chicago brick to the open-air bar seating (outside!) to the beautifully presented dishes is in line with the Foundry's goal to be "The ultimate destination to share great experiences with friends and family." Rick is no stranger to the restaurant business; he got his first job at the age of 13. Fast forward a few years; with over 15 years at Bru's Room (taking them from one location to their current ten), the Foundry is his newest venture, one where his philosophy of what a dining experience should be is clearly in evidence.

16 Pompano Today January 2016

What's the one thing Rick wants people to know about The Foundry? "It’s an overall experience from the atmosphere to the quality of service to the eclectic menu to the fresh beverage and cocktails program. We want to create an overall dining experience, from the quality of service we provide, to the made from scratch menu, to the seafood brought in daily; everything is oak grilled. We do it to the highest degree of quality but with fun and pizzazz and personality. We don’t want to be uptight or robotic or stiff – I’m an old school guy. When you’re going out to eat, you’re celebrating." After a somewhat peripatetic childhood, Rick's been in South Florida since 1996, so he's been an eyewitness to the growth and change throughout the area, and in Pompano Beach in particular. What does he see for the future of Pompano Beach? "I see no reason," he asserts, that "Atlantic Boulevard can't be a dining destination - like Las Olas Boulevard or Atlantic Avenue." Indeed. The future seems so close, we can taste it. And thanks for inviting us to your house, Rick. We had a wonderful time and we can't wait to visit again.

THE DETAILS

The Foundry is located at 2781 East Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach. This is, of course, the site of the old "Mr. Fish," a icon in its own right. The Foundry is open Sunday - Thursday: 4:00 pm - 10:00 pm, and Friday - Saturday: 4:00 pm - 11:00 pm. Call (754) 205-6977 or visit thefoundryfl. com. Photos, clockwise from top left: Rick, standing in front of what is arguably the most original decor for miles around; an associate embodies Rick's "fun and pizazz" approach; there is lovely outdoor dining, at tables and the bar; one of the yummy burgers; while the decor may be evocative of bygone days, the food is worthy of the most sophisticated palate; a delightful sushi stack.

I absolutely love eating the joint’s cinnamon raisin French toast- surrounded by “everything” Elvis. Trust Jeff Eats on this one, if you’re into “mom & pop” diners, you will really enjoy Nelson’s. Jeff Eats has eaten a ton of Nelson’s - breakfasts and lunches and each and every time, right on the money! Nelson’s Diner is a “mom & pop” with 1950s-1960s décor - booth/ table/counter seating/diner. The joint is open Monday-Friday 6am-3pm, Saturday-Sunday 7am2:30pm. Jeff Eats recently did breakfast and really enjoyed the joint. Before I get into the breakfast, I’m thinking that Nelson (or whatever the owner’s name is) must really “love” Elvis Presley…pictures-posters all over the joint. Like I said one second ago…. Thank you very much! So if you aren’t into the King, anyway… You can check Nelson’s menu/prices at nelsonsdinerpompano.com. For you guys who like things handed to you, loads of breakfast stuff, appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, salads, lunch entrees. Now, about that breakfast: Jeff Eats was there on a Tuesday morning around 7:30am and the joint was jammed. Just an eyeball call, but I’m thinking that Nelson’s seats maybe 40…

I've eaten in my fair share of mom & pop diners and Nelson's definitely holds its own against the best of them

Nelson's Diner is a winner. If you live or work in Nelson's neighborhood, give it a shot. You won't be disappointed! NELSON'S DINER 438 South Cypress Road, Pompano Beach, Florida 33060 (954) 785-3646. // POMPANO TODAY WELCOMES JEFF EATS!

A LITTLE ABOUT JEFF: “My name is Jeff. I was born (1949) and bred in Brooklyn, New York. Since 1991, I have lived full-time in South Florida and have eaten in so many restaurants (down here), that I now consider myself to be a FOOD EXPERT. To give you some

Jeff Eats’ party of four ordered a Belgian waffle with bacon ($5.99), country fried steak/2eggs/hash browns/toast ($7.99), biscuits and gravy ($3.99), French toast ($3.99), pancakes ($3-$4.69), western omelette/hash browns/ toast ($6.79)…and I gotta tell you, Nelson’s makes real good breakfast food. Nothing for nothing, I’ve eaten in my fair share of mom & pop diners and Nelson’s definitely holds its own against the best of them. Let me wrap this up for you: You guys know by now, that Jeff Eats is a huge fan of the mom & pop-neighborhood diner “concept”…I really enjoyed Nelson’s Diner. The food was right on the money, the prices were reasonable, the service was pleasant, the décor was “whatever”- and Jeff Eats left Nelson’s Diner knowing that America was built brick by brick by guys like Nelson - or whatever the owner’s name is. By the way, I know, a bit over-dramatic, but hey!last Tuesday was Veterans Day.

idea as to how many South Florida restaurants I’ve been to, as of December, 31, 2014, 441 Italian joints alone have had the pleasure of ringing up my American Express card. Just so you know, I don’t go for the fancy sit-down joints that want you to wear pants and a jacket, but rather places where a pair of shorts, an old tee shirt and a pair of sneakers is considered formal-wear. I don’t know one sauce from another. I also don’t know, or really care, how “dishes” are prepared. What I do know, is when something tastes delicious and I can’t get enough of it.” To read more of Jeff ’s picks, visit http://jeffeats.com. © Mat Hayward - Fotolia.com

8 great things to do for your car

he holidays are over and we all have given and/or received the gifts, we gained a few pounds since we found an excuse to indulge in holiday libations and favorites, we will have to adjust to our daily schedule and with that comes the fact that we will have to turn a new leaf for the new year and start fresh including starting with our New Year’s Resolutions. Research shows that over 50% of our resolutions are abandoned within the first month of the year. So, here is a simple and easy resolution that we can’t afford to abandon - proper car maintenance. With regular basic car care, we will save money in the long run.

is through driver feel - if you notice a vibration, that it takes more force to stop the vehicle, or hear a high pitched noise. If you are in this situation, it is highly recommended to drive very slowly and get to your shop because the brake pads are low and this is a warning sign. 3. Vehicle Fluids: It is very important to have the fluids (such as the antifreeze, power steering, coolant, transmission, wiper fluids…) checked and topped off if needed. Depending on the mileage and the health of your vehicle, a transmission or steering fluid flush would be recommended because after some time and depending on the mileage, or if you are driving in stressful conditions (speeding, racing, lack of maintenance); the fluids deteriorate or lose their potency. Fluids, just like the engine oil, are vital because they keep all the vehicle’s moving parts lubricated. 4. Belts: Depending on the mileage, it is recommended to inspect the belts. Depending on manufacturer’s recommendations, the timing belt is usually replaced every 60,000 miles or so, and your serpentine belt replaced every 40,000 miles, give or take. 5. Tires: If you are having hard time keeping the car straight, then an alignment is the cure. It is highly recommended to have the tires rotated and balanced, and your alignment checked, on a regular basis. This will save your tires. Tires wear evenly and the car will drive smoothly.

It is always best to start the New Year by going back to the basics and getting a general inspection on the vehicle, after the wear and tear of the summer. A new set of windshield wipers for safety and a good clean and wax job would really help with the car paint condition and of course, it is always pleasant to have a nice clean car. So, if we are to have a list of what needs to be checked, we will have the following: 1. Regular oil changes: When it comes to routine maintenance, an oil and oil filter change is an inexpensive service, but it is vital for the health of the engine. Having regular oil changes prevents carbon and varnishes from accumulating in the engine and keeps all the engine components functioning properly. 2. Brakes: Have your mechanic evaluate your brake pads and rotors every oil change to make sure that you are safe on the road. Tires and brakes are what keep the car rolling on the street. For many brake issues, your first indicator

20 Pompano Today January 2016

6. Spark Plugs: Spark plugs can age and the sharp edges will wear down or will be covered in buildup and thus more voltage is required to start the vehicle. If the spark plugs are not generating enough sparks, the battery will get drained, the engine may misfire or surge, the car may not start. So, keep your eye on the spark plugs or have your mechanic inspect and report on the state of the plugs. 7. Air Filters: 2 important filters to mention: The cabin air filter needs to be replaced on a regular basis (depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations). The cabin air filter prevents pollutants from entering the vehicle’s cabin. We really don’t want to breathe the gases that our car is spitting out. The most important filter is the engine air filter. Having a clean filter will improve car’s performance, reduce gas consumption and will keep your engine running smoothly. 8. Battery: Your car’s battery is essential to the life of your car. If you imagine the car as a living product, the engine would be the brain and the battery would be the heart. If the battery dies, the car dies. Most batteries these days are low maintenance. Batteries have a life span and your mechanic will check on its well-being, making sure that there is no leak or mineral or buildup

on the contacts. It is always recommended to have a jump starter in case of emergencies. A warning sign that your battery is going weak is when the vehicle is slow to start or does not start at all; it is a good idea to have the battery tested as soon as possible. Regular maintenance is critical to ensure the safety, reliability, drivability, comfort and longevity of your car. Getting the preventative services done will save you a lot of money in the long run. Experienced mechanics will inspect your vehicle and recommend the services needed. In the meantime, enjoy your ride and have fun.

Turning over yet another new leaf It’s time to do it all over again. That same time each year, I have such great intentions. “I will not kill anything this go around”, I say. I reach out to the same man, hoping that he will come up with a solution that will finally put an end to the maddening cycle. I pick up the phone and the conversation starts the same way it did eleven months ago. Me: Can you come by next week? I need help. Yes, again. Him: What have you done this time? Me: The usual, I just need you to fix it. You know I fail miserably in this area.

"I'll get rid of the evidence, and it will look like nothing ever happened." Him: I’ll be by Monday morning to assess the damage you’ve caused. Don’t worry, I’ll fix it like I always do. I’ll get rid of the evidence, and it will look like nothing ever happened. Me: Thanks. At least I’m consistent. See you then. Him: Maybe we should consider incorporating silk plants this time. The leaves I need to turn over are the ones that I let slowly wither away due to my own irresponsible behavior. It all started three years ago. I had a flourishing lawn, but there were there these pesky moths. So, in order to keep it healthy, I grabbed the brown bottle from the shed and mixed it up to spray those insects away. Within three days, there was not a blade of green, flourishing grass to be seen. Apparently, that brown bottle without the label was not the moth killing agent I assumed it to be. Turned out to be a little chemical named KillzAll.

That was the first massacre. And that’s where my relationship with aforementioned man started. I told him I had a clean slate of a yard, an empty palette for him to get as creative as he wanted to be. During his first visit, he wisely concluded grass may not be for me on the next go around. Mulch…and a lot of it. That was the way to go. Maybe even xeriscape. We had a plan, and scheduled a date of execution. He understandably requested that I stay far away until him and his crew were gone. As if my mere presence could harm the installation of the Xanadu’s and palm trees. I found it hard to argue. So I went off to work. Upon my return, I had a beautiful garden oasis. It was a fresh start. All dead grass had been carted away, and they had replaced it with plants this man thought I could not kill. Things that required little or no effort.

I had such great intentions I had such great intentions. I went outside every day. I plucked weeds, and I picked up leaves. I pinched back the few flowering plants he allowed me to have. But seasons passed. I came out one day to find the first casualty. A Penta had withered and died. It all went downhill from there. So I made that call. And he agreed to come back. Like magic, I left for the day and when I returned, all was forgiven. Everything was back to the original state. That was two years ago. And the next year. And the one after that. Those leaves? I’m just accepting the fact that the best way for me to turn them over is to have my friendly landscape artist plant new ones. I make no excuses, and I know my limits. I just plant more of what managed to survive my neglect. And maybe it is time to consider a few silk palms. //BY CHARLOTTE SUNDQUIST

OUR PICKS FOR THE SOUTH FLORIDA GARDENER While there are many talented gardeners who can coax miracles our of our landscapes, we are not among them. Here are our top picks for the novice - or murderous gardener, clockwise from left: Crown of Thorns - this hardy succulent comes

in both red and white flowering varieties, and survives a multitude of sins. Purslane - the wide-ranging variety of bright and vibrant colors make this a favorite. You may also find this called "Portulaca"; they are close relatives. Lantana - Lantana is ubiquitous in south Florida landscapes for good reason. It requires an occasional watering, particularly when potted. Crown of thorns, © Pat Lalli - Fotolia.com; Purslane © foto 76 - Fotolia.com; Lantana, © beerphotographer - Fotolia.com.

A new day at BaCA

The inspiring Sarah Benichou takes the helm

S

arah Benichou welcomes us warmly into her bright, sunny office. The first thing we notice is that we are surrounded by art – the furniture is a lovely arrangement of beautifully painted chairs, and a table with a tree trunk base. There is, of course, an orchid on the windowsill. We notice Sarah’s chunky jewelry, thinking that - yes - it's art, too. It’s clear that this is a woman who lives and breathes what she does.

What she does, in fact, is, well, everything. "My job," she tells us, "is to create programs that are integrated, available, and sustainable." It seems to us that what this articulate, thoughtful, energetic supporter of the arts is really saying is, "My job is to do what I've done in other cities all over the world," most notably Paris, where she was one of the founding board members of the American Friends of the The Musée d'Orsay, and also chaired the Young Patrons Group.

26 Pompano Today January 2016

Sarah has a seemingly inexhaustible supply of energy when it comes to supporting the arts, and the artists. Since graduating from Boston University, she has spent time managing the photography department (and serving as the in-house photographer) at Madison Square Garden, and was most recently the Education Programmer at the Norton Museum of Art. "I love what I do," she tells us. "It's inspiring."

"Our emphasis is on letting the artists find their creative spirit" She particularly enjoys having interns, seeing it as a way of both giving back and nurturing the next generation. As its new director, we ask her what she sees as BaCA's main purpose. "Its purpose is to serve as an incubator for artists, and people interested in the arts....Art is such an integral part of self-expression."

For the uninitiated, BaCA (Bailey Contemporary Arts) provides relatively affordable studios for artists in residence. It also offers a wealth of programming for artists and the community at large. "Our emphasis," says Sarah, "is in letting the artists find their creative spirit figuring out what they want to say and how to say it. I see it as a safe space for creativity." Sarah is also focused on cultivating the community, through various programming. While BaCA will remain focused on visual arts, the Ali Cultural Arts Center will focus on performance arts It's clear throughout our interview that, in Sarah Benichou, Pompano Beach has found someone whose drive, energy, experience, and enthusiasm, not to mention deep respect for artists and the arts community, will lead our city's arts programs into the future.

This year's event featured a festive variety of craft, from kayakers to the big boys (over 30 feet).

Truth be told, this is one of our very favorite events of the year. It's a signature event for our Chamber, and it's a relaxed, hometown event - our favorite kind. This year did not disappoint. Turning over a new business leaf I remember

back in 2006 I hit a MAJOR crossroads in business. I had to decide to give up the business that I thought I should be doing to dive into the business that actually made sense. Keep in mind this is my experience and not everyone will have the same outcome. There are plenty of entrepreneurs that are successful in business by following their true passions. Then there is a group of us that are having fun and enjoying the “idea” of being an entrepreneur. But are we really following our passions or is it the idea of it all? In 2006, I realized that I loved the idea of being an entrepreneur and all that came with the journey, but the industry chosen did not fit my long-term goals. So, I turned over a new leaf, closed the business, rebranded and was ready for the next chapter! Turning over a new leaf can be life changing in business. Let’s jump right in:

Ask yourself: Am I truly enjoying the work and everything that I am doing? What is the “leaf ” that needs to be turned over? What is “it” that has to change? What’s bothering you? For me, I was tired of fighting that “inner voice” of failure. I came to realize that the “inner voice” was actually not failure – it was intuition, you know - that gut feeling. I knew that I wanted to be an entrepreneur, set my own hours, go to an office, network and all of that good stuff. But was I truly enjoying the work and everything I was doing – no. It was a hard decision to close my business. But, it was the best thing for me. Is there something that needs to change in your current situation? An employee, a shift in the way you do things or a new set of goals to focus on? Figure out what the “leaf ” is and turn it over. Are you willing to “turn” it over? At first, I was not willing to. I fought it much longer than I should have. When my peers, colleagues and close circle of friends started to ask me questions like, “what do you do again?” Or “Can you explain to me how your business works? I don’t quite understand.” That’s when the

bell in my head started ringing louder. There’s always that “leaf ” in your business that must to be thrown away or turned over. Maybe you added a new product or service that’s not working. Listen to what your customers and peers are saying to you about your business. Be willing to listen, digest and turn over that “leaf.”

A major part of your journey is listening to what your inner voice says and not mistaking it for fear, when it's truly your gut telling you what to do. When the “leaf ” is turned… Once I decided to close the business and rebrand with 3E Connections, Inc. the floodgates opened. Everyone finally understood my mission, purpose and service offering. All of the folks that are in my circle were saying – this is exactly what you should be doing. Bravo! The validation felt great but when that “inner voice” went silent - that felt even better. Are you always going to make the right decisions? Of course not! Part of this journey is learning as you go. But a major part of it is listening to what your “inner voice” says and not mistaking it for fear when it’s truly your gut telling you what to do. Turn that “leaf ” and watch what happens next! Trust me, you’ll be amazed! // BY TEANA MCDONALD

HOLLYWOOD CORNER

stars in your eyes news from the west coast

Jesse Pringle: dreaming of more, and living the dream Kill Em All Producer/Creator/Writer Jesse Pringle grew up in the Kansas City area and divides his time between Hollywood and Kansas City. He returned to his hometown to shoot and produce this web series. Jesse decided to film the series in his hometown so that he could involve local actors and musicians who don't normally have the opportunities that are available in Los Angeles.

Before we begin, congrats on your success with "Kill Em All"! When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act, produce and write? Growing up in the Midwest requires a good imagination at times. As a child I can remember watching network television and wanting the life of an actor and show writer because it allowed me to dream of many different lifestyles and story scenarios. What inspires you to act, produce, and write? My biggest inspiration for acting, producing and writing a TV style show is standing on set of a show that I created in my mind and how awesome it feels to see talented actors and crew members make my thoughts come to life. I am also thankful to have some close friends who have been successful in the industry so this gives me inspiration that I will also have success in my craft. When did you realize you had reached your goals as an actor/producer? Anyone that knows me would say that I am my toughest critic. I am not yet where I see myself when I’m finished; however, I am very proud of the series starting from nothing and quickly becoming an award winning show that is watched around the world. What was your favorite role to date and why? Not to be completely biased but I love playing the role of Carson McCullough in the Kill Em All series. This character says and does sometimes the unthinkable; however, his willingness to continue to fight against dangerous adversaries explains why I like Carson so much. In my opinion his story is one of many who are living in a hard reality of being forced to fight against evil and wrongdoers to achieve his goals. What do you enjoy most about your career? Knowing that there is an audience that enjoys my style of writing and stories fills me with energy to continue on the road of entertainment. Can we expect a book from you? This is a great question because before I started filming the Kansas City show I had talks with an award winning author about a series of books based on the online series. Regarding a tell all biography, it’s not time yet… I have also begun designing a comic book series to follow the digital online series. What is the best way for your fans to know what you’re working on? Facebook/ Twitter? Do you post for your own sites or do you have your assistants do the posts?

30 Pompano Today January 2016

With all the social media outlets that are out there, I would say I’m still very connected to my audience via Facebook but I am also doing my best to be more active on Twitter and Instagram. Tell us something new, something bold that you’ve never told any other magazine…news tip :) Although I fight to keep my personal life and professional life separate, I do have the pleasure of while writing, producing and acting in the Kill Em All series I also participate as an assistant football coach on my 12 year old son’s undefeated football team and their goal of a national championship. That same son that was featured in the KC show, Season 1, Episode 4 riding his bike during the end credits as I ran from the police. Lol. ;-) // BY MISTY SCHWARTZ.
