THE SCENE

photos by Paul McDermott Photography

An evening of world-class performances at the Amp On a cool, almost rainy Saturday evening in March, an outstanding lineup took the stage at the Amp. From the opening performance by Yärdij to the late evening guitar wizardry of Coco Montoya, the crowd was spellbound. It's impossible to choose a favorite from this incredible lineup. In case you missed it, here's a brief rundown of the evening. More photos at pompanotoday.com. Yärdij (below, left), featuring lead vocalist Deja Elyze, opened the evening with a high energy set. Learn more about this fabulous group of young musicians, most of whom are Florida natives, at yardij.com/. Betty Fox (top, right) - where do we begin? What a powerhouse of a voice, accompanied by her guitar as well as a stage full of great musicians. Blues, soul and funk at its best. Treat yourself to more at bettyfox.net/. Next, Lauren Mitchell (page 11) and her incredibly talented band took the stage. Lucky for us, we got to spend a wee bit more time with Ms. Mitchell, having interviewed her the week before the show. Thank you, Lauren, for sharing your amazing gift with the world. Our interview with Lauren begins on page 11. Learn even more at laurenmitchellband.com/. Sean Chambers (right). Oh my. We ran into a couple (dad is a musician in his own right) who made the trek from Naples, toddler in tow, so as not to miss this remarkable guitarist. Clearly well worth the trip! Have a listen at seanchambers.com/. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, Eric Gales (bottom right) took the stage. "Guitarist" does not do Mr. Chambers justice. The music was, in a word, mesmerizing. If you do one thing today, get yourself some Eric Gales music, and find out where he's playing next. Wow. ericgalesband.com/. And then - yes, there's more! Coco Montoya (below) closed out the evening. Who knew that a guitar could do that, or that, or that? To call Mr. Montoya a magician is not too much of a stretch. Find more magic at cocomontoyaband.com/.

Micanopy

EXPLORE

text and photo by Jim Stafford

Real Florida: Take a trip to Florida's oldest inland town Micanopy, established in 1821, offers a wealth of fun and history, from the canopy of majestic moss-draped oaks to unique and varied shops. William Bartram, a noted author and naturalist, visited the area in 1774 and described it as an Edenic land of “Elysian fields and green plains.” The town also has links to President Taylor, who built a fort in the area during the 2nd Seminole War in 1835. Recent archaeological findings have uncovered the locations of two forts as well as two battlefields dating to the conflict. Micanopy was rebuilt after the Seminole war and by the 1880s the area became known as the leading orange and vegetable growing area of Florida. Many of the larger surviving homes (see below) reflect this previous era. The historic district encompasses 38 buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Micanopy is located just south of Gainesville, east of I-75, and is a must see for anyone looking to discover the Real Florida! For more information visit: micanopychamber.com. Read more below, courtesy Visit Florida, visitflorida.com/en-us/cities/micanopy.html: "Micanopy is Florida's self-proclaimed antiques capital. Named in honor of a Seminole Indian chief and settled in 1821, this Alachua County town – about 15 minutes south of Gainesville – features dozens of antiques shops, many on tree-lined Cholokka Boulevard. The street also is the site of the town’s annual Fall Harvest Festival – think music and crafts. The scene is heavy on greenery, making it a pleasant spot to while away an afternoon beneath the oaks. In addition, the nearby Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park allows you to spot bison (yes, bison!) and wild horses from a 50-foot-high observation tower."

Mess O'Blues, from p. 9:

Presents Marketing Materials Created by the Public Communications Office

A few minutes with the incomparable Lauren Mitchell Lauren Mitchell is charming even via email. When we asked if 10:00 am was too early for an interview, we were treated to her throaty laugh and proclamation that she expected to be "sufficiently caffeinated" by then. And, indeed, she was. Tell us a little more about growing up in a musical family. Wow! It was pretty amazing. I remember hearing my grandparents (on my mom’s side) they always had an organ in their home and Grandma could play and Grandpa could play a little bit - church songs, old hymns, and both of them and my mother sang in our church choir in Ohio, so that seemed the most natural place to play in front of humans for me. I remember [the first time I sang in public]; I was 7 or 8 years old. I remember being nervous but you’re in a church and you know everybody and they’re all smiling at you and they love you. Do you remember thinking at the time, “I can do this”? I don’t remember but everyone would praise me and compliment me. It’s always been a very natural thing for me to do. I started voice lessons at the age of 9. My mom put me in voice lessons when it became apparent that I had some ability and I enjoyed doing it. As a child it was definitely – everything was musicrelated in one way or another. All different kinds of dance, lots of ballet and that kind of thing. I found that I had an affinity for tap dance. I still like to watch it, I still love it. I took piano lessons; I played a clarinet. Theater classes. Everything seemed to revolve around performance and one way or another, music was involved.

Do you have siblings? Yes, I have a younger brother; he’s 2 ½ years younger than me. He’s a visual artist; he does graphic design. Where do you live now? What’s that like? Sarasota-Bradenton. It’s really wonderful over here we have such a great music scene all the way up and down this coast. There’s a wonderful blues and soul scene and also a wonderful cultural scene with the Sarasota Opera, [which is] amazing, and we’ve got a great ballet over here. If you could meet one musician from the past, who would it be? Oh. You can stop right now. It would be Etta James, hands down. Whenever I get asked that question, that is always the answer. She was one of the finest soul singers ever to walk the face of this earth. That personality – she didn’t take any baloney from anybody and I would have loved to have met her back in the day.

Beat the heat! Looking professional in the summer months

Y

our image is always on the line in any professional setting, no matter what the temperature is. What is the answer to looking professional while living in the heat of summer? You CAN look professional and appropriate while staying cool and in style!

The relentless tropical climate is no excuse for you to lose your credibility by baring it all, and destroying your

professional image. It is already being sabotaged, to some degree, by the current trend of “business casual.” There are several ways that you can maintain your image and comfort, while looking polished and professional. Bare shoulders, low-cut tops, naked upper arms and legs will never be perceived as professional for women in the office. A sleeveless dress works well, with a jacket to throw on for a more polished © look. Men can also achieve a professional look in the office by adding a jacket for meetings or presentations, taking their jackets off and rolling up their sleeves just above the elbow when at their desk. Investing in appropriate office wear with good quality, loose fit, and a cool fabric will give you the ability to layer, and will certainly enhance a cool attitude.

quality, non-lined jackets have specially finished seams and will not ravel. By incorporating these tips, you may see dynamic changes in how you are perceived by others in the workplace, and you are more likely to get the results you want every day!

#staycool

Summer is the time when you should reassess the way you dress. Lean more toward a suit with an A-line or flip skirt. Remember that blouses may be worn as jackets and pants should be unlined and have a slightly loose fit. While in fashion, at the moment, figure hugging tops and body suits are not as cool as garments which allow air to flow freely past your skin. Cotton, wool, linen, and silk are just a few natural fibers that promote comfort in extreme temperatures. Garments made from these fibers breathe, acting as a natural form of climate control and relieving your body of accumulated heat, thus reducing the risk of excessive perspiration. Of course, the weight of any material also has to be taken into consideration, which means that any of the fabrics mentioned above as “cool” need to be lightweight and loose fitted, if they are to be comfortable in hot weather. Beating the heat means choosing clothing styles that reduce bulk and maximize your professional appearance. That translates into single-breasted jackets, short-sleeve blouses, medium-low necklines, less structured garments, sheer hosiery, and minimal accessories. I suggest wearing jackets that are short sleeved and either unlined or partially lined to reduce heat. Even if the outer fabric is cool, when the lining is synthetic, it will be hot and uncomfortable to wear. Be sure to always buy the best quality you can afford, as high

Dealing with "Uncle Denny" Wedding season, and the opportunity to see our favorite- and not so favorite relatives - is fast approaching. In preparation for our May Weddings issue, take a moment to ponder and practice your tact and diplomacy if you are "lucky" enough to sit with Uncle Denny. We all have that relative – you know – the one you dread being seated beside at a family dinner...the one you avoid getting stuck talking to at the holiday gathering – and perhaps most abhorrent of all...the one you do not want to be seated anywhere near at the Cousin Ernie’s wedding. For kicks and giggles – let’s call him Uncle Denny. What to do when you find yourself astride this family pariah? In life as in sport – a good offense is the best defense. Walk right up to Uncle Denny and extend your hand – say hello, ask how he is, ask about his garden/ golf game/latest hobby you can think of and then fall on the sword and invite him to sit with your family. Yes, you find big D obnoxious and can’t bear the thought of suffering through this lovely ceremony seated beside him... but what about the bride and groom – ya think they’ve thought about the blasphemy that might come out of this man’s mouth on their most perfect day? You bet your corsage they have! Once you are seated with Uncle Denny, employ a strict method of engage and distract. You may be bored hearing about how Uncle Denny doesn’t give a flip what the insert expletive club pro recommends – he is not participating in the Play It Forward campaign, blah, blah, blah – he’s been playing from the champions’ tees since he was a young buck and he’s not moving to the blankety, blank ladies’ tees now for man nor beast! Fine – you are bored...and he is cussing – but you are setting him up for the quiet kill before this exquisite uniting of two people begins. The distraction

ploy can be trickier and you may feel like a juggler but you can do it. When the voluminous relative walks by – drop your handkerchief, ask about his new shoes – you get the gist....distract, distract and then distract some more. The final, most precarious step is the real hook and it takes a little psychological jump on your part – so bear with me - why is Uncle Denny the way he is? Is he really rude? Does he know he’s being that loud? Does he miss Aunt Marge so he fills spaces of silence with bad-mannered jibber-jabber? You get the drift? So the hook - you’ve engaged and distracted and you can hear the hush coming over the room – the first chords of the wedding march trickle down from the organ....take Uncle Denny’s hand and say, “isn’t this beautiful? I just love the silence and reverence of a wedding, don’t you? All of us here together as a family – celebrating – so happy to see you, Uncle Denny – can’t wait to talk to you some more when we get to the reception.” Happy Hushing! // BY BENJAMIN'S FINE ALTERATIONS AND TAILORING. Dealing with the diagnosis

W

hen my first two sons were three and one years old, my husband and I received the diagnosis that my oldest son had autism. As parents, we were initially crushed. We went through a period of disbelief and were depressed. I did not understand how this could happen to “my son”. We were so scared that our younger son also had autism. When he continued to progress without signs of the disorder, we were ecstatic. A few years later my husband and I decided to try for a girl (although we would be happy with a healthy baby of any sex) and when I was just a few weeks pregnant, I received the shock of my life when I was informed that I was carrying twins. Seven months later (yes, they were preemies) two beautiful boys were born. Yes, four boys!!! When the twins were two years old, we were advised that they had autism as well. Again my husband and I were in disbelief, depressed and could not understand how three of our children had autism. Most parents of children with autism go through similar emotions when they first receive the diagnosis. We were fortunate that when we received the diagnosis for the twins we already were familiar with this disorder and knew where to turn and what treatments to begin. All of our sons went to various therapies, and when they were three, began school. When dealing with the diagnosis, it was hard to find support. Our families did support us, but they did not understand autism so they really could not provide us with advice throughout

I do not think there is anything that is "typical" when speaking about autism

About the Staffords Dr. Gina and Jim Stafford have been married for over 15 years. Throughout that time they had four beautiful children – all boys!!! Over the course of their relationship they have faced ups and downs, especially since three out of the four sons were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Despite the obstacles that came their way, their marriage has grown stronger. People who know the couple always ask how they do it. The answer is that with hard work and faith anything is possible. The couple decided to share their story, their strategies, and their lives with other couples to assist them in building a relationship just as strong as their own. our journey. The greatest form of support we have received is from parents of other children with autism. It is comforting to speak to someone that understands the disorder and how it impacts everyday life. The funny thing I have learned talking to parents is how different the disorder is for every child. Yes, there are some commonalities, but overall I believe that the disorder manifests itself so differently in each child. I do not think there is anything that is “typical” when speaking about autism. If your child has received this diagnosis, my best advice to you is talk to people: your family, your friends, and others who have children with autism. I have seen many parents try to deal with this diagnosis in isolation. You should not try to embark on, or continue, this journey yourself. We write frequently about autism. If you have any questions about autism, please do not hesitate to contact us. //BY DR. GINA STAFFORD

Take the kids camping - or at least on a day trip to a state park One of my favorite things to do is travel across Florida to discover all of the state’s hidden gems and spotlighted places. I have found that visiting state parks are a wonderful way to experience Florida’s natural beauty and connect with its environment.

Florida has over 150 state parks; in 2013, our park system was recognized as the best state park system in the United States Open year-round and with over 150 state parks, there is no shortage of fun and educational activities to keep the calendar full. While each park offers its own menu of activities such as kayaking, swimming, horseback riding, and camping of course, the state parks are consistently well maintained and visitor friendly. In 1999, 2005, and 2013, the National Recreation and Park Association recognized the Florida State Park system as the best state park system in the United States. Several of our state parks are home to National Natural Landmarks, but to visit one will require a short road trip. A short trip west to Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park in Collier County will reward you with a view of cypress forest from the Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk. My wife and I visited Weeki Wachee Springs State Park on our honeymoon and a few years later we ventured to Silver Springs State Park to celebrate our anniversary. Now I live just 18 miles north of Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park and I can’t wait to visit it. I appreciate the beauty that the Atlantic Ocean brings to the South Florida landscape, but for a change in scenery that rivals the ocean, visit one of these springs.

Park in North Palm Beach. Renting a kayak and experiencing the park from the water is an enjoyable way to beat the heat during the hot summer months. As for camping in one of Florida’s state parks, you will find RV camping, cabins, lodges, primitive camping, boat camping (yes, boat camping!) and equestrian camping. For more information on our state park system visit floridastateparks.org/. Lastly, please check with your local school to find out what summer camp options are available for your child. A list of Broward County Public Schools can be found by visiting browardschools.com/School-Info.

Camp! And More!

Pompano Beach Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts: Serving Up Camp, Fitness, Fun and Culture 24/7/365 OK, maybe not "24". But it's sure close, and it's definitely 7/365! We first learned of how awesome our Parks and Recreation department is when we moved here ten years ago. Summer camp is how much for residents? Oh, that's per SUMMER??? And it's a great, old-school camp where kids get to play in the park, go on the occasional field trip, make new friends, and generally have a fabulous summer? We're in.

1

As our son got a little older, we discovered even more opportunities that our city offers to our youth - from tennis to Junior Lifeguard Camp to golf to fencing to art to drama to...ok, you get the idea. In the intervening decade, as our son has grown into a young man, Parks and Recreation has grown too - and, in fact, is now "Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts." And they don't just serve kids - or even humans! The Canine Corner Dog Park is another of our favorite haunts, and there are riding stables, too! Want to go boating? Trailer up and head to Alsdorf Park. Looking for a few minutes of quiet solitude with an amazing view? Check out Harbor's Edge Park (warning: blink and you'll miss it!) - one of our favorite spots to while away some time looking at the wide-open vista of Lake Santa Barbara.

2

Interested in history? Check out Indian Mound Park. Kids getting antsy? There's a playground near you. Catch a play at the Curtain Call Playhouse at the Skolnick Community Center. Catch a free movie at the Great Lawn on the third Friday evening of every month. Looking to get back in shape? Sign up for Jazzercise, yoga, ballroom dancing, and more. There's a Kid's Culinary Camp and an Adult Cooking Workshop. Quilting. Adult and Kids' Karate. Clearly, we could go on and on and on... For this coming summer, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts offers several summer camps throughout the city, ranging from week long tennis camp (or you can sign up for multiple weeks) to season-long summer camps. Junior Lifeguard Camp also includes a "Grommets" program for campers ages 7-8, while the Junior Lifeguard program includes campers ages 9-17. The city also offers a three week "Beauty and the Beast" performance camp at the Emma Lou Olson Center. For more information about this and all of the great opportunities that await you - and the kids! - visit Parks, Recreation and Cultural arts online at pompanobeachfl.gov/index.php/ pages/parks_rec/parks_rec. Photos, from top: 1. How adorable are these? Kids love these "make and take" activities 2. Dawn Palughi, Recreation Leader, with just some of her tools of the trade. It's clear that she "loves" her job. 3. Another darling student creation. Clearly, we can't get enough of these.

Venture north to Nick's 50s Diner: A top-notch mom-n-pop experience!

For our purposes we’re gonna call Nick’s 50’s Diner an “out of sight, out of mind” diner joint! Jeff Eats first told you guys about Nick’s 50’s Diner way-back on December 8, 2008 - that “story” is reprinted down below…until yesterday morning, Jeff Eats hadn’t been back to Nick’s. Why the hiatus?- (back in 2008, I loved the joint’s food/service/ prices, table/booth/counter seating, 50’s decor), like I said a few seconds ago, I’m kinda thinking “out of sight out of mind.”- Something like, I live in Boca Raton and Nick’s is in West Palm Beach! Anyway…Yesterday, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats did breakfast- and the joint totally killed! Delicious western omelette and scrambled eggs/bacon toasted sandwich. Super pleasant service. Constantly filled coffee cups (for what it’s worth, Mrs. Jeff Eats said that I should tell you guys- that the coffee was absolutely delicious). Long story short, if you’re into top-notch “mom & pop” diners- then you gotta try Nick’s 50’s Diner!

Nick’s name says it all…50’s diner…well almost, Nick’s has been around something like 25 years, so you do the math. Anyway…check Nick’s website at nicks50diner.com for menu/loads of pictures and you’ll know exactly what this joint is all about. Nick’s is a great place for a “diner” breakfast or lunch. Nothing fancy…good food - good prices - pleasant wait-staff. The menu is loaded with breakfast-stuff, salads, soups, burgers, sandwiches, meat/seafood/chicken entrees, shakes/malts/ice cream/ desserts. My personal favorites, grilled cheese with bacon, chicken fried steak, double cheeseburger and the meatloaf.

If 50’s-diner “look and food” is your bag (it’s mine)…you will really enjoy this joint. Nick’s is open for breakfast-lunch… Monday-Saturday 7am-3pm and Sunday 8am-2pm.

Since 1991, I have lived full-time in South Florida and have eaten in so many restaurants (down here), that I now consider myself to be a FOOD EXPERT. To give you some idea as to how many South Florida restaurants I’ve been to, as of December 31, 2014, 441 Italian joints alone have had the pleasure of ringing up my American Express card. Just so you know, I don’t go for the fancy sit-down joints that want you to wear pants and a jacket, but rather places where a pair of shorts, an old tee shirt and a pair of sneakers is considered formal-wear. I don’t know one sauce from another. I also don’t know, or really care, how “dishes” are prepared. What I do know, is when something tastes delicious and I can’t get enough of it.” To read more of Jeff ’s picks, visit jeffeats.com.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Alonzo Mourning by Paul McDermott

An unforgettable hero

Recently, famed Hall-of-Fame basketball player Alonzo Mourning attended a photo shoot for the 2016 Warren Henry Auto Group marketing campaign. Warren Henry Auto Group is South Florida's premiere Luxury Auto Group. As part of the campaign, various programs will be organized by the Warren Henry Auto Group with all proceeds to benefit the Mourning various non-profit organizations - the Mourning Family Foundation, Inc., Honey Shine, Inc. and Overtown Youth Center, which are designed to help Miami’s most at-risk children by making an investment in the future of our community. Pompano Today was lucky enough to sit it on the shoot, and Mr. Mourning was gracious enough to spend some time with us as well. Photo courtesy Rogers & Cowan. Read on for more...

How old were you when you first picked up a basketball? I was eight years old, and I retired at 38. The Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School has quickly become one of the most highly regarded schools in the country. To what do you attribute that? Good staff, good leadership, Lisa Garcia is an amazing leader and she’s put together an amazing staff and provides all of the necessary direction and creates the best atmosphere for these kids to be productive and flourish. You and Tracy must be very proud of Trey, who’s at your alma mater. Was he always interested in languages? His [high school] alma mater is Ransom Everglades. He goes to Georgetown. Portuguese and Spanish are two of his favorite languages. You have one daughter, Myka – what impact do you think Tracy’s community efforts, such as Honey Shine, have had on Myka? When we think about our kids, they’re influenced by all of our actions. Me and my wife, what we do; they’re influenced by that because they’re around it on a daily basis. They understand the importance of giving back, becoming active participants in making the community better, because we made that part of their lives. From the Honey Child perspective, my wife works with the young girls to help them understand the importance of taking care of their bodies and making the right decisions as young women. That has definitely been an influence on my daughter as well. Alijah is just six – as the youngest child, does he get spoiled as the “baby” of the family? All of our kids are spoiled and we have a pretty sizable family so all of them are spoiled but they also have their priorities straight and understand the importance of being humbled and the importance of being thankful. What’s your favorite thing to do when you have downtime – if you have any? When we have downtime, we like to spend time at the beach. And we travel a little bit. What’s your favorite place to travel? The Caribbean. It’s right in our backyard, so we love the Caribbean. What is your once piece of advice to a young basketball player just starting his NBA career? Go to school! Basketball isn’t guaranteed. I know there are a lot of kids out there that have professional aspirations. But you have a better chance of being a team doctor or team attorney or team broadcaster than you do of becoming a professional athlete. Never stop aspiring to be a professional athlete, if that’s what you want to do, but also understand that you create other options for yourself to still be connected with professional athletics by going to school and getting an education. As a professional athlete sometimes things happen that aren’t to our control. I know Chris Bosh is going through a similar situation to what you did. What is your advice for him? My only advice is to prioritize your health more than anything. Basketball, again, is temporary. He’s got a family to raise. That’s our focus right there. Just to make sure he’s healthy.

Tell us a little bit about the Mourning Family Foundation. The Mourning Family Foundation was established in ‘97 and the focus is to provide educational opportunities for children and families from very low socioeconomic areas, taking a holistic approach towards the development of these young people, understanding that all of these kids have the ability they just don’t have the resources, and trying to provide as many resources as possible. Of your many incredible accomplishments, both on and off the court, what are you most proud of? I’m most proud of the work we do with our foundation; it’s significant work because we’re changing lives for the better. Basketball, again, is temporary. Obviously it opened up opportunities and created a pretty comfortable lifestyle for myself and my family. But basketball is not forever. I think that the legacy that we leave through the support we provide to young people and their families – that’s what we want to be remembered for, that’s the legacy we want to leave, because it’s something that they’ll never forget and hopefully it’s somewhat like a cycle – you give to others and they won’t forget it and it encourages them to make a difference in someone else’s life. Have you always thought that that was your main purpose? I did. So basketball was sort of a part time thing? It is; very much so. That’s a healthy perspective. It is. What do you love most about being here in Miami? The weather, beautiful people, good food. How would you complete the sentence, “Alonzo Mourning is….”? [Thinks for a minute] A leader. A provider. A motivator. Thank you so much again for taking the time to meet with us today. It was a pleasure - quick and painless; I appreciate it, guys.

AROUND TOWN (this old house)

Only a handful of structures in Broward County have survived for 100 years, and in 2016 the Sample-McDougald House joins this select group. Constructed in 1916 by Albert Neal Sample, the house originally was located on the Dixie Highway, just south of today's Sample Road. In order to preserve the landmark, in 2001 it was moved to its current location (450 NE 10th Street, Pompano Beach), where it was restored and the four-acre grounds, designed as Centennial Park, landscaped.

Camping, redefined in the best possible way When I think of camping, the first thing that comes to mind is lobster in Maine. Growing up in the northeast, I never realized that the majority of the population in the United States considered lobster to be something most often ordered in restaurants on special occasions. I took it for granted that was what families brought along on camping trips to kick off the first night of the adventure.

Is it even possible to go on a weeklong vacation without Wi-Fi connectivity anymore? Once the pop up camper was set, my grandfather would get out the portable gas stove and start a pot of water boiling. It was just what we did when I was a kid. Once dinner was ready, we all sat around a fire and happily devoured those little crustaceans, along with corn on the cob, and sometimes even littleneck steamed clams that were dipped in melted butter. The rest of the meals included the usual hot dogs, toasted marshmallows on a stick and such…but I’ll always remember the lobster. I don’t go camping anymore, so thoughts of those times now provide me the memories of quality days spent with relatives that are now either long since gone, or those that I don’t currently spend nearly enough time with due to geographical distance between us. And it makes me a bit melancholy, if I’m honest. Because even if we attempted to recreate such an event, it’s likely that such moments would never equal the original times spent together. I do yearn for the occasional nostalgic moment. Is it even possible to go on a weeklong vacation without Wi-Fi connectivity anymore? Or leave the laptop and iPad on the desk at home?

be interpreted to loosely translate into time when we break away from the norm. If it gets us away from our daily routine and provides us the opportunity to create wonderful times to reflect on what’s important, well then, let’s just say we’re camping. Haven’t been able to find the time or money to rent that cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains? No matter. Why not pick up a pop-up tent and pitch it on the beach for a couple of hours when the sun starts to set? Bring a deck of cards, a blanket and teach your daughter how to play “go fish”. The point is don’t wait for the sun and the stars to align themselves to provide that special moment in time that will be remembered for years to come. Too many days can pass us by, and then they quickly turn into years if we let them. Choose to make time that you will fondly remember twenty years from now. Just don’t wait any longer and put it off to one day soon. That one day soon is now. So make it happen. And on that note, I’m off to call my uncle to see when we can arrange a lobster date and talk about those good old days on the Cape.

//BY CHARLOTTE SUNDQUIST IMAGE © THE CHAD / ADOBE STOCK

Sure, I know that millions of people still go camping on a regular basis. But it’s not MY idea of camping, so in my mind it’s just not ever going to be as good as it was when I was a kid. We went to so many different places, and explored territories that no one had ever ventured to. My cousins and I climbed hills in the woods better than any mountaineer, we barrel-rolled down sand dunes on the Cape, and washed our hair in icy cold streams. Idyllic, but then again, these are all selective details I’ve kept in my head. Maybe the territories had actually been ventured into before. And maybe the barrel rolls weren’t such a good idea, since it took us three days to wash all that sand out of our hair. One could argue that those times can’t be recreated. But now consider that they don’t have to be. If camping could just

GET SMART

working it

Sizzle this Summer Summer can be great for your business IF you plan to succeed. Forget about what the competition is doing and focus on the things that will give you a jumpstart and make you “sizzle this summer.” Let’s dive in and talk about a few solid tips: •

The Holidays Already? Yes, already. As a business owner you always have to think several seasons ahead to plan appropriately. Think about how the 2015 holiday season went. What could you have done differently? How could you have made

SMARTER. BOLDER. FASTER.

a bigger impact with your products and services? What would you like the upcoming season to look like this year? Create a lessons learned checklist and use those items as a roadmap for planning your 2016 holiday season. •

Set aside a budget and see which option works best for you •

Host or Sponsor Networking/Mixers If you have the space to host a regular networking event or mixer - do it. This will increase foot traffic and give you the opportunity to network and meet new people. If you don’t have the space to host the event then pony up a few dollars and become a sponsor of a networking event. The sponsors are normally given 5-10 minutes to address the crowd and talk about their company. Set aside a budget for your summer networking adventures and see which option works the best for you.

House Cleaning It’s time to get things in order. File those papers, make those repairs, update that website, send out those newsletters and the list continues to grow. Use this time to wrap up all of those “things” that you had to put off during the year. You know, that pile of papers on your desk that keeps growing or those 35 flagged emails that need to be handled. Use the summer to get organized and clean that house.

Special Client Events Celebrate that list of special clients that have reached various milestones with your company. Have they had their 100th purchase or visit? Have they spent a certain dollar amount? Have they referred friends and family to your company? These special clients are the ones that support you all-year round and they deserve a thank you. Spend some time on retention and give a summer shout out to a few special people.

I’m sure that these are all things that you’ve heard before, right? It’s just like when your mom tells you something over and over again – on the fifth time it finally sinks in. Every once in awhile, a life-changing product comes along. You know the kind - the kind that makes you slap your forehead (at least metaphorically) and think, "Really? I couldn't have thought of that?" You probably could have. But you didn't. Thankfully, Bill Glazer and his partner, Rob Lembersky, did. Get Waisted's tagline is "Free Yourself....." and this is not hyperbole. Really. We take ours everywhere - so long, purse! See ya, crossbody! Imagine - phone, keys, money, cards, and - look ma, free hands and a slim silhouette! Get Waisted is life-changing. Stop by Glam Sparkle n' Glitz and see for yourself. It comes in several festive colors including basic black. Oh! It can go under your shirt, too. Amazing.

GET THOSE PANTS HEMMED. Those sleeves altered. You know you need to.

We'll pay $1,000 (ok, $1, but still) to any reader who can prove to us that there is not one.single.thing. in his or her closet that couldn't use a little fine tailoring. We know. You have a sewing kit. So do we - three, in fact. How long has that blouse been sitting there? Those pants? Hmmm? It's ok. Thankfully, we have Benjamin's. We have never, ever, ever looked so put together as when the outstanding folks at Benjamin's work their magic. In fact, we're fighting the compulsion to buy more clothes (!) so we can go back.

Camping, but not - meet the luxury RV Where does your mind venture out to when you hear camping, summer camping or just a camper? What was your experience when you went camping as a child? Was it with family members, friends or with the Boy/Girl Scouts? If you have never experienced the camping adventure… you are really missing out on so much. Camping tend to inspire many of us to appreciate nature. It is during camping that we value the outdoors physical activities, to take in the fresh air and the scenery and to forget about our life back home. It is during that trip that we spend quality time with our camping companions. Connecting together over a camp fire, enjoying each other’s company instead of spending our time in front of a computer or on our phones, is the reason to step out of our comfort zone and plan a camping trip. Did I get you excited? Are you ready to take a summer camping trip? Is so, here is what you will need - to start with, if you are the outdoorsy kind, then a tent, a sleeping bag, some warm outdoor clothing (just in case it gets cold), a good sun block, dry food, utensils, first aid kit, a lantern and bug spray. These are the basic supplies you will need. As for a camping site, there are so many beautiful sites all over South Florida. You just have to do your due diligence to pick a campsite that will fit your needs. These days there are many campsites equipped with cooking grills, toilets and showers, and many times they have firewood that you can buy for your campfire. Now, you can always take your car to the site, set up a tent and you can live on the rough side… back to basics! Or if you are like me and want to be comfortable while camping then the choices are limitless because you can always go RVing and yet it is still camping. You may rent a small camper and hook it to your vehicle or rent

an RV. Depending on the budget, you can go as low cost all the way to riding and RVing/ camping in style in a state of the art camper/RV. The RV offers the freedom to drive anywhere anytime you please in a leisurely manner. You can park, get to sightsee, to bike, to hike, to cook delicious meals, to shop anytime and not to worry about perishable food since you have a fridge in the RV. Remember, you are not fighting off the bugs at night. Yet you would enjoy star gazing in a romantic setting. You would be sleeping in a comfortable bed. You can also go tailgating with your family and friends. During all these activities, the world fades away. This can be your home away from home. When it comes to RVs, the choices are based on your budget. Before you purchase an RV or a trailer/camper, try to rent one or go on a trip in one so that you can have a feel of what you like and what you don’t like. Many companies will custom design your RV of choice. Even if you are not planning on purchasing an RV, try to visit an RV dealership. You will be impressed with all the different kids of travel trailers, 5th wheel, folding pop up trailers, hybrid trailers, class A or C Motorhomes. There are even RVs priced at $2.5 million where you have a sports car garage on the deck.

The most expensive RVs - usually owned by the ultra-rich and famous - are a vision of beauty. They are the following: • The Vantare Platinum Plus: a custom RV with Swarovski crystal and built-in car garage valued at $2.5 Million dollars. • Unicat Amerigo Series: a heavy duty RV. Designed to handle any adventure its owner would like to go on. It is valued at $500 K. • Country Coach Prevost: this is a diesel RV designed for comfort and luxury in mind. Priced at $1 million. • Victorinox Airstream: this is a travelling RV, it is a limited production RV and is priced at $60K. • Airstream Classic Limited Edition: looks like the classic RV, yet the interior is luxurious with a skylight, bay window and an outdoor shower. Priced at $150K. • Feast your eyes on the Featherlite, pictured here and on facing page. Photos courtesy Featherlite Coaches; learn more at amadascoach.com/ and FeatherliteCoaches.com. Now, these RVs are for the jetsetters but you can always order one if the price is right for you! In the meantime, you can always check out the basic campers or RVs starting at $10K. Whether you are using a tent or riding in an RV, try to get away from civilization, and enjoy nature while appreciating the camping experience. Remember, we all need to take a vacation, a break from reality. A day or two in nature will be good for your body and soul. So, venture out, breathe clean air, smell the earth, plants and trees, take pictures and share these memories with your loved ones. //BY JAY GHANEM

The Multitalented Louis Mandylor

For close to two decades Australian-born Louis Mandylor has steadily worked in the highly competitive entertainment industry, where thousands strive but few thrive. A one-time professional boxer and soccer player turned accomplished actor and filmmaker, Mandylor has starred opposite such renowned talents, new and legendary, as Jeremy Renner, James Coburn, Burt Reynolds, Lainie Kazan, and Harvey Keitel. Mandylor has also recently garnered a reputation as an award-winning director and independent filmmaker following the establishment of his independent production company Krakatau Films.

Before we begin, congrats on "My Big Fat Greek Wedding and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2" and your other recent projects. When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act, direct and produce films? Well, it happened in stages, first it was the acting, then the directing and now producing as well... I came here for about 9 months in ‘89 and went home gave up on the dream actually, had a nightmare once home and got on a plane and came back the next week, it just felt right...at that point I studied with the wonderful Janet Ashanti, and hence it all began. What inspires you to act and produce films? If you wake up loving what you do you are such... I really love acting and the rest to boot! What inspires me? All [that] I see around [me], it could be the wonderment of watching a web being woven masterfully by a spider or the will of a prize fighter to endure punishment and come back and win!!!! When did you realize you had reached your goals as an actor? I have not reached my goals as an actor or film maker yet! What was your favorite role to date and why? Friends… Joey’s twin... could’ve gone on for many episodes, was supposed to, ha!! Why? Because he was dumber than Joey!! What do you enjoy most about your career? I enjoy the never ending journey, the unknown in the character, and working again!!!!! Can we expect a book from you? Yes...A book is en route - “5 Pound Kid” is my book title. What is the best way for your fans to know what you’re working on? Facebook/Twitter? Do you post for your own sites or do you have your assistants do the posts? I have Facebook – there is an official Louis Mandylor page (facebook.com/LouisMandylorOfficial/) and Twitter (twitter.com/ louismandylor; @louismandylor); I am becoming more active at this point in time. What are you working on at this time? I am traveling to promote “Fat 2” (yay) and soon to follow promotion and premier of “Daylight’s End,” a William Kaufman film!!! A few other nice things but I can't mention as of yet!! Tell us something new, something bold that you’ve never told any other magazine…news tip :) Come on… Well…they call me the 5 pound kid!!! My parents went to have me aborted and my father who happens to be very, let’s say, fickle, was quoted 40 pounds for the procedure. Once there, my mom was all locked n loaded. The doc said “John, I need an up-front cash payment.” John said “Okay, Doc.” The Doc said 45 pounds, my father reminded him of the 40 pound quote, hence an argument broke out and my father asked for my mother’s removal: "Doc get my wife we are having the kid”!!!
