ANTERIOR HIP REPLACEMENT

YOU HAVE A CHOICE

Every day, people with limps, walkers, canes and wheelchairs come to an important realization - the pain is just too much. Choosing to have any elective surgery is no easy decision; even when you know the end result is saying goodbye to your pain and hello to your life. While total hip replacements have been one of the most successful surgeries since they began, deciding to have the procedure has always come with its costs, until now. Orthopedic surgeons at the Joint Replacement Center at Broward Health North offer an innovative new approach to hip replacement surgery - anterior hip replacement using the specially designed hana® table. Patients who choose the anterior approach to hip replacement as opposed to the traditional posterior approach don’t just say goodbye to the pain, they say goodbye to the restrictions as well. Patients receiving anterior hip replacement experience none of the precautions related to traditional hip replacement, including no post-op dislocation precautions, no restriction of postop activity, immediate use of normal toilet height, no post-op abduction pillow (between the knees) required, cross legs as desired, no shoe lift requirements and no post-op sexual activity limitations. “Approximately 375,000 Americans undergo hip replacement surgery each year,” says Dr. Bruce Janke, Medical Director of the Joint Replacement Center at Broward Health North. “With this number expected to almost double over the next 25 years due in part to the aging population, it is important that people know they have a choice in the type of procedure they undergo.” With the anterior approach, a small four inch incision is made just below and to the outside of the groin. Two muscles are then pushed aside, giving the surgeons access to the hip socket to perform the replacement. No muscles

at any time during the procedure are split or detached. For the patient, that results in a faster recovery, less pain, smaller incision, less blood loss and less scarring. “The outcomes are incredible,” says Dr. Steven Naide, Medical Director of Orthopedic Trauma at Broward Health North. “Within weeks our patients are getting back to golf, tennis, yoga, whatever it is they enjoy doing that became impossible due to pain.” The Joint Replacement Center is the recipient of the Florida Hospital Association 2011 Celebration of Achievement in Quality and Service award for Innovation of the Year in Patient Care. The Center is also first in Broward County to be Joint Commission Certified for Hip and Knee Replacement.

Our experienced surgeons at Broward Health North have performed more than 2500 anterior hip surgeries using the hana® table. Why live in pain when you can choose to put the fun back in your life?

Steven Naide, MD, Medical Director of Orthopedic Trauma & Bruce Janke, MD, Medical Director of the Joint Replacement Center.

October

WELCOME TO OCTOBER 2014!

October! It's time to make some joyful noise! Our theme this month is "music" - and wow, are we developing a great local music scene! Check out the local scene at BaCA (on our inside front cover, and our back cover, too!) or a host of other local hotspots. This month, Charlotte Sundquist ponders what your taste in music says about you, and the awkward conversations that may occur when you reveal your deepest musical tastes. Read all about cars as status symbols in the music business, courtesy Jay Ghanem. Whatever you're doing, find your favorite tune and blast away - and enjoy!

It’s Adopt a Shelter Dog month! The October birthstone is the opal, which comes in a variety of beautiful hues. Fun fact: The name "opal" derives from the Greek Opallos, meaning "to see a change (of color)." To learn more, visit americangemsociety.org. The flower is the marigold, pictured above. Note: We’ve not had luck with these here in South Florida, but if you’ve got tips, let us know!

The Model T The date is up for debate, but according to The Ford Motor Company, In October 1913, mass production of the Model T began at Ford's Highland Park, Michigan, Assembly Plant. Henry Ford had previously organized men and components to enhance Model T production, but the moving assembly line quickly improved chassis assembly speed from 12 hours and eight minutes to one hour and 33 minutes.

It's My Party Day By the way, Lesley Gore was just 16 when she debuted this song on American Bandstand, in May of 1963. Whether this day itself celebrates this iconic song or not remains up for debate.

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871. This year’s theme is “Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month” To learn more, visit nfpa.org.

In 1718, the school was renamed “Yale College” in gratitude to the Welsh merchant Elihu Yale, who had donated the proceeds from the sale of nine bales of goods together with 417 books and a portrait of King George I.”

October 18 Zombie Rush

Zombie Rush 5K ++NIGHT RUSH++ is the next level of fun and fear in this pre-Halloween event. This is a Zombie themed 5k night run, filled with hordes of the undead to chase after you. When we say full immersion that means participating in a heart pounding, non-stop, and action packed adrenalized experience. We will take you on a one of a kind trip, navigating the post-apocalyptic aftermath through dimly lit zombie zones full of fog and lurking zombies. Once you leave the safe confines of the compound, you will experience surprises around every corner. Each zombie zone will be uniquely themed and sure to get your heart racing. Touted as one of the most exciting, safest and well-organized races out there! The chase starts in the compound area from our signature start line. It is protected from the zombie infested quarantine zone by barricades of chain link fence, tires, pallets and whatever else our team finds. Your objective is to traverse through the apocalyptic aftermath and zombie zones. The zombies will be in the chase zones and this is where you will have to sprint, dodge, jump, and roll or do your best zombies juke! You will have health

flags that the zombies really, really, really want! Finish the race with at least one health flag and earn the coveted “Survivor Medal”. Lose all your flags and you will have one chance to gain a health flag back at our revive station, but it won’t be easy. Finish with no health flags, you are considered infected and receive no medal. There’s that awesome apocalypse after party, which only Zombie Rush knows how to throw! Enjoy our activity filled venue while jamming out to the beats of our in house D.J., straight out of Miami! This crew can definitely bring the party when it comes to music and spinning the latest and greatest. No other race throws an after party like Zombie Rush. ATTENTION! There will be a breach in the perimeter fence by incoming zombies during the event! Listen for the emergency broadcast followed by the zombie sirens. This is sure to send chills down your spine as a live horde of zombies spill into the compound area and move swiftly toward their human targets…you. Not to worry, our Zombie Rush Outbreak Response Unit will be alerted and respond to the invasion not a minute too soon. Stand back and enjoy the show as they take down the horde of zombies and save your hide! You really want to have your cameras out for this one. Note: all spectators will be ushered behind a safe line. This is a live performance, which involves large moving vehicles, special effects smoke and a cast of actors. Our Charity: Zombie Rush 5K has partnered with a local charity Kendra’s Kisses. The “Kendra’s Kisses Foundation” was founded by Marc Vermont, a Lieutenant with Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue, in honor of his daughter who died from a cancerous brain tumor in 2007. YOUR LIFESTYLE || FASHION FORWARD

Stand tall! Project! Articulate! You've got this! By Elaine Simmons

When you communicate, you want to convey confidence and credibility, and you want people to feel compelled to listen. Considering that a lot of what is communicated is non-verbal, body language and vocal inflection can miscommunicate your real message. Use these tips to increase the effectiveness of your communication and ensure that you always get your point across. Recognize the Power in Your Posture Your communication starts with the stance you choose when you speak. Whether you are talking on the phone or you are in a meeting, it is always best to stand up when you speak. To really get your point across pull your shoulders back to slightly exaggerate your posture and open up your diaphragm. Do not play with a pen, fidget or cross your arms and legs when you speak. Using open body language conveys that you mean what you say and are open to the input of others. Project Your Voice Recognize that the purpose of the volume of your voice is not exclusively to ensure that the listeners hear you. Volume adds authority to your vocal presentation and it is important to speak up to project the volume that demands attention. Be Articulate The most prevalent challenge in everyday communication is the lack of clear articulation in conversation. Every time you use a speech filler as in “ah” or “um” or “you know” or “so,” you are detracting from the confidence you want your words to convey and you diminish the power of your message. Ask a trusted colleague to tell you what your speech fillers are and work to eliminate them. You can also record a few of your phone conversations; you will be surprised at what you hear.

SING A SONG OF CONFIDENCE

About the Author Elaine Simmons is an Image, Etiquette and Body Language Consultant, offering image consulting services to individuals and groups.

Remember to be clear about the message you are delivering. Do not cloud the issues you are talking about. Pay Attention to Your Pace Everyone has their own natural pace for speaking. When we are nervous many people really speed up. When we talk too fast we convey a lack of experience, and we do not allow time for our listeners to comprehend what we are saying. Pay attention to your pace, be sure to breathe and do not be afraid to pause. Keep In Eye Contact Another huge challenge many people have when they are talking is that they look everywhere except at the people to whom they are speaking. Do not let that be you. When you avoid looking at people, they may subconsciously feel that you are not telling the truth and you are also more likely to lose their attention. Staying in eye contact makes people feel like you are speaking to them personally rather than just speaking out loud. Be Consistent Keep your message consistent. Do not contradict yourself from one communication to the next, or be inconsistent in your words on the same subject to different people. This can quickly put people in the position of distrusting you. Consistent communication is key to building confidence. Every time you speak, you solidify or confuse the effective image you have been working hard to create. Identify which of these communication areas need the most attention from you and get started today. Your communication is the cornerstone of your image. Make sure yours is working for you.

Split Pea Soup with Ham Hock Ingredients

Directions

• • • • • • • • •

Fill your crock pot 3/4 full of water, which should be 7-8 cups of water. Add all the ingredients, and put crock pot on "low" and let cook until you come home. When you are ready to enjoy the soup remove the ham hocks, and cut the meat portion into small pieces, add the ham back into the soup and serve.

1 bag of split peas (about 7-8 cups of water) 1-2 ham hocks 2 stalks of celery, diced 1 med yellow onion, diced into small pieces 2 tablespoons of garlic powder 3 carrots, sliced into 2 inch pieces 2 tablespoons of Garlic Cilantro Balsamic* 1 tablespoon of Rosemary Olive Oil* Salt and pepper to taste

Chicken with Carrots and Celery Ingredients

Directions

• • • • • • • • •

This is a wonderful fall crock pot dish. Get a small-medium whole chicken. Wash thoroughly and place in crock pot. Fill crock pot until the water covers the chicken, but not too full. Add ingredients, put on "low" and when you get home, remove the chicken. Put chicken in colander so all the water drains off. Let it cool and then begin to take the meat off the bones and add back into soup. Yum!

One whole chicken 7-8 carrots, sliced into medium size pieces 4 celery stalks, cut into medium size pieces 2 small-medium sweet onions, sliced into small pieces 2-3 tablespoons of Tuscan Farmhouse Herb Mix * 2 tablespoons of Roasted Garlic Olive Oil* 1 tablespoon of Rosemary Olive Oil* 2 bay leaves Salt & pepper to taste

*Available at The Heart of the Gourmet

These are two of my favorite recipes. They are so simple, they are a joy to make.

J LYTLE:

THE LOVE ARTIST

O

An interview with Dawne Richards nce again, a chance meeting led to even more serendipity than we thought the universe held. This time, it came by way of a supremely talented, magical artist by the name of J Lytle.

We won't bore you with the details of how we met (actually, we're DYING to tell, but there is only so much space on a page; drop us a line if you're interested in the rest of the story). At any rate, we were both delighted to have made each other's acquaintance, and agreed to sit down for a longer chat one day soon. The days turned into weeks, and the weeks turned into...well, you know how that goes. Finally, one bright Saturday morning in September, we made the pilgrimage to J. Lytle's abode. This inspiring creative (who the legendary David Ogilvy called a "trumpeter swan", high praise in the creative world look it up) greeted us nattily attired in pink sneakers (with HEARTS!) - side note here: J Lytle repaints these hearts each week, for breast cancer awareness. Be still OUR hearts. He escorted us to his lovely home/working studio, where classical music plays in the background, and objets d'art abound, both the perfect delicate counterpoint to his laced-with-gravitas British accent.

with their non-dominant hand, then their dominant hand, and instructs them not to move the marker until they can visualize their name (note: we're desperate to ask if we can try this, but we maintain professional dignity. Sort of.).

This man is in constant motion. Right now, he's teaching over 500 (!) students, ranging in age from four to 88, some of whom are on the autism spectrum. Leaping up to get a brush, he demonstrates how when you close your eyes and paint, "the brush becomes almost an extension of your heart." Indeed.

He speaks movingly of the students who have truly touched him, including a nine-year-old autistic boy whose family did not believe he was capable of performing this exercise. To everyone (except J Lytle's) surprise, he wrote his name beautifully, eyes squeezed tightly shut. "The beauty of the human spirit....I am blessed," he mentions, and we are both fighting the lumps in our throats. Yes, yes we are.

His students begin by choosing their favorite color marker and, interestingly, their non-dominant hand. He has them close their eyes and write their name first

After a peripatetic childhood which included stints in New York, the Lytle family settled in Pompano Beach. J Lytle is a walking encyclopedia of the history of the

18 Pompano Today October 2014

barrier island; he's got an incredible memory and fascinating stories about our current environs. He lived on Riverside drive from 1957 - 64, and calls it "the happiest time of my life." This prolific artist is also an author, and has also been a jingle writer, creative director, and much, much more. He's got three children's books in the works, and one is about "A Berry, Berry, Berry good day" - oh, that voice! We think to ourselves. Just in case you're curious, he has now achieved 1,052 consecutive "sunrises of prayer"; his 1,000th, in fact, was celebrated at the Ebb Tide, which is the day we met at that very place. Serendipity, indeed. We're grateful that life has led him right back here. Welcome home, Trumpeter Swan.

10 Common Signs That You Need Roof Repair or Roof Replacement

A

Robert Borowski, Allied Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. s a home or commercial building owner, learning to recognize the signs that your roof is in need of repair or replacement can help you avoid unexpected costs and inconvenience. If you have ever discovered a mysterious puddle on the floor or felt the cold wet splatter of a drip from your ceiling, you would probably agree that these are some of the most obvious signals that it is time to call a roofing contractor. Very often people are totally unaware that their property needs roof repair until this point. However, an active leak is usually the result of damage or deterioration that has been developing over time. Fortunately, there are ways you can identify evidence of a roof leak or other roofing damage before encountering this type of scenario. Early detection of a problem will allow you to be proactive when it comes to the maintenance of your roof.

Many tell-tale warning signs of a roof problem will be visible to you from inside your home or business. These symptoms are usually caused by moisture resulting from water intrusion and should always be addressed immediately. Indoor Signs of Roofing Issues: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Brown spots on your ceiling Mold or mildew on your ceiling or walls Peeling wallpaper Cracked or peeling paint Discoloration of wallboards

In addition to what you can see from inside, outdoor inspections of your roof can alert you of problem areas that can be fixed before becoming more advanced and requiring more costly repairs. Exterior Signs of Roofing Issues: 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Missing or damaged flashing Missing shingle granules Curling shingles or broken tiles Finding granules in storm gutters Wet insulation in the attic

Determining Whether to Repair or Replace Your Roof Once you have identified one or more signs of a roofing issue, you will need to determine if the problem can be repaired or if it is time for a new roof. When deciding whether to repair or replace, consider the age of the roof and how many times it has previously been repaired. It is also a good idea to be mindful of whether your roofing materials are within their warranty period. Common indications that a roof should be replaced are: • • •

leaks that persist after numerous repairs leaks occurring in multiple locations a roof that is more than 20 years old

Although it is important to know how to spot a problem with your roof, in some cases these signs become visible only once leaks or other damage has occurred. It is advised to also have a professional roofing contractor conduct biannual inspections of your roof.

BREAST HEALTH Aza Abdalla, MD Internal Medicine, Broward Health North

***NEW PRACTICE OPEN FOR DR. AZA ABDALLA offering Same Day Appointments – call now!*** 3896 N. Federal Highway Lighthouse Point, FL 33064 T – 954.933.9600 F - 954.781.9828 What is breast cancer screening? Doctors use this screening to check the breasts for early signs of cancer in women who have no symptoms of breast cancer. The goal is to find cancer as early as possible. What is a mammogram? A mammogram is the main test used to screen for breast cancer. It is a special kind of X-ray exam of the breast. There are two types of mammograms: 1- Screening: Performed on women with no clinical symptoms or complaints. The purpose is to detect early stage, treatable breast cancer. Earlier detection does not necessarily ensure a cure, but a screening mammogram is the best available way to detect breast cancer. 2- Diagnostic: Performed on women who have pain or an abnormal breast issue, such as a palpable lump, nipple discharge or have had an abnormal screening mammogram in the past. Who should be screened for breast cancer? According to the American Cancer Society, women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. Women at high risk for breast cancer (for example, women who carry genes that increase their risk of breast cancer or those with a family history of breast cancer) should be screened at a younger age.

How often should I have a mammogram? Depending on individual risk, women should have a screening mammogram every one to two years. What if I have breast implants? Women with breast implants should also have mammograms when indicated. Be sure to tell your doctor and the radiation technician about your implants. What about breast exam? Your doctor will do a breast exam on a regular basis. Some women prefer to do self-breast exam. In general, you should 1-LOOK 2-FEEL 3-SQUEEZE. Stand in front of a mirror with arms at your waist. Look for skin changes, such as dimpling, discoloration, changes in the nipple or contour of the breasts. Feel for a lump using your left hand to examine your right breast and vice versa. Squeeze your nipple gently and look for discharge. If you find anything abnormal, report it to your primary care physician. About Aza Abdalla, MD: Dr. Aza Mohamed Abdalla is a physician specializing in internal medicine at Broward Health North. Her treatments and services include general internal medicine and preventive medicine, in- and outpatient management, acute and emergent care in the intensive care unit as well as rapid response,

Before your mammogram: Here are some important reminders: • To reduce discomfort, avoid scheduling your mammogram just before or during your period when the breast is more sensitive and swollen. • If you have breast implant or if there is any chance you are pregnant, tell your physician and the mammography facility. • Don’t use underarm deodorant or powder on the day of your appointment.

HOT CARS Cool Rides for the Moguls of the Music Biz

By Jay Ghanem

F

rom the first car ever produced, cars have been linked to the level of success of an individual. With the development of the music industry, hot cars, second only to hot women, have been a staple of the music video since the medium's early days. From Van Halen and Whitesnake to Rihanna and Kelly Clarkson, cars play a special role in their music videos… There are even songs about driving or cruising in their cars…

So, as we look at some of the wealthiest hip hop artists in the music business, we see that they have been mirroring their fortune to the vehicles they drive. Now, we will also confess to having a sweet spot for luxury cars, so we wanted to share with you the kind of cars the rich and famous rappers drive. Listed in order of their ranking: Sean Combs a.k.a P. Diddy - with a net worth south of $580 million- drives the most expensive Rolls Royce at $443,000. He also owns an exclusive Maybach 57 valued at $360,000 and a Lamborghini Gallardo along with a 1958 Corvette. Jay-Z - with a net worth of $430 million - is one of the few people who own the $8 million Maybach Exelero. Also part of the million dollar club is the producer’s $1.8 million Pagani Zonda, and a $2.4 million Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport. Andre Young a.k.a. Dr. Dre - with a net of $350 million- keeps a low profile.

© Dudarev Mikhail - Fotolia.com

On rare occasions however, the Doc has been spotted in a modest $53,000 Hummer H2, although it is public knowledge that he also owns a $280,000 white Bentley, gifted to him by Eminem. Bryan Williams a.k.a Birdman - with a net worth of $150 million- is a car enthusiast. Just like Jay-Z, Birdman splurged and ordered the $8 million Maybach Exelero. He also owns the $2 million Bugatti Veyron, the $2 million Maybach Landaulet, and has recently reserved the 4.6 million new limited edition Lamborghini Venemo. Curtis Jackson a.k.a 50 Cent - with a net worth of $125 million- drives a $320,000 Ferrari 599 GT Fiorano, a $550,000 Ferrari F50, a $300,000 Rolls Royce Phantom, and a Pontiac G8. And the list goes on… There is more money invested into cars among these artists that can feed a small nation for a year... So, whether you like music, art, fast cars or just a nice ride, just remember, it is a style and it represents you… So, the question is: Do you drive a Beemer, a Fiat or a Ford… What are your priorities? We know that these music moguls drive for “the show” and to prove that they made it in the world… Enjoy the music while riding along the beach in our beautiful Pompano Beach.

THE WHITE-MISKELL ACT: A SIGNAL THAT FLORIDA CARES By Florida State Senator Maria Sachs

W

ater sports is a thriving business and an exciting entertainment sport for all who enjoy our coastline. Ensuring the safety of all water sports is of paramount importance. For more than a decade the Florida Legislature had been gridlocked in regulating this most popular water sport. It wasn't until I teamed up with Representative Gwyn Clarke-Reed, Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher and other community leaders, who made it their mission, that we finally passed this landmark legislation. The law is named in memory of Amber May White, a Belleview teenager who died in August 2007 after her parasail line snapped and she hit the roof of a Pompano Beach hotel, and 28-year-old Kathleen Miskell, a Connecticut tourist who died in August 2012, after plunging nearly 200 feet into the ocean, also in Pompano Beach. Gwyn Clarke-Reed and I championed the White-Miskell Act because tragic accidents over the years have emphasized the need to create basic safety regulations for this popular recreational activity. Knowing that several legislators had previously failed in their attempts to create safety measures in the parasailing industry, we knew a unique approach had to be taken. Throughout the past year, we worked with parasail operators, industry representatives and state officials to create prudent measures which maximize safety without creating unnecessary burdens on parasail operators.

Pompano Today.com

Representative Clarke-Reed and I (pictured above) want to recognize Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher, who had the difficult task of consoling the families after the tragic parasailing accidents. Mayor Fisher has been a strong supporter of the legislation and during the legislative session he traveled to Tallahassee to testify during a committee hearing on behalf of the bill. The law will prohibit commercial parasailing during sustained winds of 20 mph or higher, when gusts are more than 25 mph, when visibility diminishes to less than a half mile or lightning storms are detected within seven miles. It will also require operators to maintain a valid license and carry a minimum insurance policy. Prior to this legislation, the industry had remained largely unregulated. Passing this bill into law is a clear signal that Florida cares. It will save lives. The safety of Floridians and the many tourists who visit our state is paramount, and the White-Miskell Act will prevent parasailing tragedies from occurring on the shores of our state.

WHAT DOES YOUR MUSIC SAY ABOUT YOU? PLENTY!

M

By Charlotte Sundquist

© giadophoto - Fotolia.com

usic - now there's a controversial topic. The mere utterance of one wrong band or singer's name can lead a conversation down a slippery slope. Just like religion and politics, individuals have a tendency to be very passionate about their musical preferences. One slip up in the wrong social setting, and it's possible to be branded a troublesome head-banger for life.

Imagine, if you will, the scenario of a new law firm intern attending his first important company gathering. There are impressions to be made, and one wrong move can make or break the future of the overly eager young employee. New pinstripe suit? Check. Haircut? Check. Thirty dollar bottle of wine for the hostess? It's covered.

What is it about music's ability to classify us, or transport us to a different time and place in our lives? It can conjure up visions of the girl who ripped out your heart in high school, or a road trip through the mountains in that rented red Mustang convertible. Happy and sad, songs can trigger emotions long since forgotten. Ironically, prior to writing this, I had spent weeks transferring my music CDs to an online account. As each disc was uploaded and then stacked into a pile, I went through memories of my trip to Jamaica while listening to Ziggy Marley, spending summer vacations on my father’s boat with the Beatles White Album, and dancing nights away in Miami clubs that have long since closed. Now, while listening to this music, it did bring me to think about the transition of audio collections and how many of my old songs have become lost along the way. I smile to myself when I think of the records, 8-tracks and cassette tapes I've owned in my lifetime.

The night rolls along smoothly for the young man. He sips his bourbon, but knows better than to drink too much too quickly. He charms the senior partner's wife by complimenting her on the meal, and eventually a small group retires out on the balcony of the penthouse to enjoy the view of the Intracoastal.

And what about the ever important mix tape? If you ever received (or put one together) you can relate. A quote by John Cusack in the movie High Fidelity comes to mind…"Now the making of a good compilation tape is a very subtle art. Many do's and don'ts. First of all you're using someone else's poetry to express how you feel. This is a delicate thing."

The discussion topic turns to what was the best concert they'd ever attended. Someone mentions Buddy Guy. Another remembers a spectacular performance with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant at Wembley stadium in London. A parrot head reminisces about Jimmy Buffett in West Palm Beach. And then it's the young man's turn to speak up. As he searches his memory, the end result….."I've got to say my all time favorite was the Beastie Boys at the Bonnaroo Festival in 2009." Uh oh. And then the moment of awkward silence ensues.

Can you be judged by the music that you enjoy? And does it really matter? I personally don't think I would hold it against that young man when he mentioned the Beastie boys. However, it may have been more fun if the older gentleman next to him was also willing to confess he attended that same festival. And who am I to stereotype anyone? Dean Martin, Adam Ant, The Misfits and Creedence Clearwater Revival all live together in harmony in my CD tower.

Right, the Pompano Mercantile Company, 1935. Dating from the mid-1920s, and located on Flagler Avenue, the Pompano Mercantile Company was the main purveyor of just about anything that a farmer or contractor might need, from a hammer to dynamite. If you were a customer, the odds were good that you would be dealing with a Tarbett. E. E. "Charlie" Tarbett began working at the Pompano Mercantile Company in 1926 and managed the store until his death in 1966. His son, Henry, began working at the store following his return from the Army in World War II and after his father's death took over the management until he passed away in 1985. Today, the building is occupied by the Holy Cross Medical Group.

By Michael DiPierro or me, one of the most interesting aspects of living and working in Broward County is the diversity of its people. According to the 2010 census, about 32 percent of Broward residents were born in another country, up seven percent from the 2000 census. This statistic is alive in our school system; the 340 Broward County Public Schools serve students from over 200 countries and who speak 130 different languages. Imagine the opportunities and challenges of entering the public school system as a limited or non-English-speaking child. Our dedicated educators are instrumental in providing our culturally diverse population with rich learning opportunities. When Ana entered the public school system at five years old, she spoke no English and had few resources at home to help her learn the language. Ana’s parents worked minimum-wage jobs and struggled to make ends meet. Ana grappled with learning English

during the day and speaking only Portuguese at home. During her time in school, Ana became proficient in English, attended Florida State University upon graduation, and is now a public school administrator. Ana attributes her success story to teachers that were sensitive and responsive to her needs, and a loving family. Throughout her career Ana has been an advocate for all students, but holds a special spot in her heart for students with similar stories to her own. Stories such as Ana’s are becoming increasingly more common in Broward County and across the nation. The Center on Education Policy indicates that one in five students speak a language other than English at home, with a majority of these students learning English as a second language in school. For more information on the Broward County Public Schools English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) department, visit esol.browardschools.com. The ESOL department services ELL (English Language Learner) and LEP (Limited English Proficient) students and can be seen proudly wearing purple shirts that read “ELL YEAH!”

NEWS FROM THE WEST COAST

stars in your eyes

McKinley Freeman: Making it Happen Tell us more about your character and how you identify with him. Derek is relentless. On or off the court, he’s a guy that’s going to give it his all, even if it’s the wrong choice. Go big or go home haha. I can relate because at the root of that mindset is passion. I firmly believe that if you’re not passionate about it, you shouldn’t do it. Life is too short to waste time. When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act? I was working for IBM at the time and I would have conference calls with marketing and sales teams around the world. If I had a call at 6am my time, I’d be up at 5:50ish. When I’d get early call times for acting (i.e. 6am), I’d be up at 4:30, workout out, showered, said a few prayers, called my grandparents haha. But it’s true! Going back to the passion point, my actions kinda showed me where my heart was. Bobby Q Photo courtesy What inspires you to act? Living and people. Being able to wake up and do exactly what my dream is, is a blessing I never take for granted. I say “people” because we all are so infinitely different but so fundamentally the same. We come from different countries, religions, regions, family and structures that make us different, yet there are fundamental “human” things that connect us all...love, understanding, companionship, etc. that connect us all, no matter the language. When did you realize you had reached your goals as an actor? I’ll let you know when I get there (smiles).

What was your favorite role to date and why? I’d say the role of Derek because it’s been a creative process. I got a script and a team of folks said, “go make something out of these words” (laughs). Very humbling, frightening, and exciting at the same time. What do you enjoy most about your career? Everything...even the jobs I don’t/didn’t get. This career reinforced my firm belief that you just have to have faith and continue chipping away, and one day, something will happen. There’s no blueprint for progress or roadmap for success. You simply have to believe you can do it, and set forth about the business of making it happen. Can we expect a book from you? Yes! I’m publishing a book of poems this summer titled, “@McKinleyFreeman Vol. II”, that’s inspired by random words from my twitter followers that I used as a springboard for the original poems I wrote. What is the best way for your fans to know what you’re working on? Facebook/ Twitter? Do you post for your own sites or do you have your assistants do the posts? The easiest and best way is through Instagram and Twitter (both are @ McKinleyFreeman). I do my own posts, responses, and typos lol. Tell us something new, something bold that you’ve never told any other magazine…news tip :) I once beat up the Kool-Aid man....I’ve said too much....lol. Photo courtesy James Lee Wall

By Teana McDonald

t’s always music to my ears when my clients are happy, when new clients are rolling in and business is just as it should be – growing! If business could always be this way when you’re a business owner- life would be a dream. When the stars are aligned you’ll have that special song playing in your ear, you don’t need that extra shot in your daily cup of coffee and you definitely have a noticeable pep in your step, right? The minute that the “you know what” hits the fan and clients are complaining, business is slow and you’ve taken your last business breathe, the happy music stops. Trust me, I’ve been there. The bigger question is, “how can you keep the good music in your ears?” Let’s dive right in!

The Visual Time Machine What is the visual time machine? It’s what you use when you are feeling unmotivated, defeated and ready to shut the doors. Whatever the issue is – rely on the visual time machine. Take a few minutes to take a look back on what you have done right in your business to get where you are today. For me, it’s taking a peek at my press book where I see all of the magazine, newspaper, TV and radio spots I’ve secured for clients. It’s perusing down my client feedback and recommendations on social media (LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook) or it could be looking at a handwritten thank you note. Think about

the successes that you’ve had in the past and take a moment to stay in that place (by strolling down memory lane) to get the “happy” music playing again. Been There, Done That Person We all have at least one successful person in our circle that we admire and look to for guidance and mentorship. I call that the “Been There, Done That Person.” It’s the person that has built a successful business but went through quite a few hurdles for it to happen. It’s that person that has it altogether and whose business is working for them – not the opposite. Set up a time to have coffee or a phone chat to express your concerns and ask for advice. I guarantee they will provide a ton of golden nuggets, a few laughs and a plethora of “been there, done that” moments. Are You Doing Enough? Really sit down in a quiet place for a moment and ask yourself this question. Are you doing enough to grow your business? Are you networking enough? Are you cold-calling enough? Are you marketing/selling enough? Sometimes entrepreneurs think, if I open a new restaurant, boutique or online company people will come and buy. I’m here to tell you, it’s not going to happen. Those days are gone. You cannot sit behind a desk and expect your business to prosper. No one will know about your business but you. After you’ve asked yourself this question this could be an amazing opportunity to try new tactics and invest in new strategies. The music will always be playing in your ears (whether it’s your happy tune or not). The goal is to focus on the kind of music you like to hear in your ears and take the necessary steps to keep that “happy” tune playing.
