THE HOLIDAYS ARE HERE!

Sparkle FoolProof

The best thing about the holiday season (other than the food, of course) is the many parties, with family, friends and coworkers. Sometimes deciding on what to wear to each event can be a big feat. If you are looking for ways to put together the perfect holiday party outfit, look no further! Here are 7 of my most vital tips on How to Dress up for a Holiday Party. 1. Pay Special Attention to Fit No matter how you will be dressing up for your holiday parties this season, good fit is the most important factor to a successful outfit. Do justice to your shape with the right silhouette, hemline, and overall garment structure – when in doubt, a good tailor can be a girl’s best friend. 2. Add the Right Accessories From black-tie to dressed-up denim, great accessories can take your holiday party look to the next level. Highlight a low neckline with a statement necklace, draw attention to your face with dramatic

10 Pompano Today November 2014

3. Use A Little Sparkle Tis the season for glamor, and what better way to dress up for a holiday party than by adding some sparkle! Use sequins, beading and bling for a stand-out look ideal at a festive event. Just remember, a little embellishment goes a long way, so moderation is key. 4. Play with Color Most of us love wearing black, but the truth is that colorful clothing, accessories or shoes can add instant drama and strong visual appeal to your party look. For best results, balance a splash of color with neutral pieces, and opt for must-have jewel-tones - they are sexy, flattering, and appropriate for any event. 5. Being Comfortable is Crucial So much of looking good is feeling good. Ensure you are radiant at every party you attend by wearing clothing and footwear that is comfortable, appropriate, and well-tailored. Not only will you look great throughout the evening, but you will be able to focus all your attention on having a blast. 6. Don’t Forget Your Hair and Make-up Smooth tresses and appropriate make-up are a must when dressing up for a holiday party. The best part? Have fun with it! Treat yourself to an up-do, add sultry red lips, or go for that smoky eyes you have been dying to try. Either way, do not underestimate the power of beautifully done hair and make-up. 7. Make sure your outfit is fool-proof You will most likely be drinking some holiday cheer, and you may even be dancing. Make sure that your blouse is properly buttoned, or use double-stick tape to make sure that all that should be covered is covered. Dressing up for a holiday party and truly looking fabulous is well within your reach. Just add a bright smile, a great attitude, a few of my favorite style tips, and you will be fierce and fashionable for every event this season.

AMAZING THANKSGIVING TURKEY Simple.Moist.Delish! by Kevin Roth

Food this good deserves extra-festive place settings. Easy-peasy!

Amazing Thanksgiving Turkey Ingredients: Turkey

Ingredients: Vegetables and Seasonings

• • • • • •

• • • •

1 12 to 14-pound turkey, including neck and giblets 1½ tablespoons kosher salt ¼ cup extra-virgin roasted garlic oil* (available at store) 1/4 cup rosemary olive oil * 1/4 cup of blood orange olive oil* 1/4 cup of garlic cilantro balsamic*

*Available at The Heart of the Gourmet

• • • • • •

1 pound carrots, peeled and cut into 2-inch chunks 2 large onions, peeled and chopped into 1-inch pieces ¾ pound celery , rinsed and cut in 2-inch chunks 1 ounce dried porcini mushrooms, crumbled into 1/2-inch piece 1 orange 1/2 apple 1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns ¼ cup extra-virgin roasted garlic oil 1 teaspoon kosher salt, if needed 6 cups vegetable broth

Directions Clean the turkey, washing it thoroughly, removing giblets and all extra fat inside the cavity. Sprinkle the inside with salt, pepper, and add 1/2 cut up apple, and an orange halved and squeezed inside the cavity. Then mix in a bowl the blood orange, rosemary and roasted garlic oil (about a teaspoon of each) and drizzle the mix inside the cavity. Take the remaining oil and lift the skin slightly so you can coat the meat underneath the skin with the oil, then rub more salt, pepper and oil over the entire skin of the bird. This makes it nice and crispy. If you need more oil, feel free to add as desired. Sprinkle some of the vegetables around the pan, pouring a little oil over them so they roast along with the turkey with a sprinkle of vegetable broth so they don't burn. Cover turkey with tin foil and roast In roasting pan according to weight and temperature instructions. (I like the turkeys with the pop up stick which tell me exactly when it is done). After about 45 minutes, juice from the turkey should begin to appear at bottom of pan. I make sure that I take the juice and baste the turkey and veggies all over every 30 minutes. This makes the skin extra crispy. About half way through the cooking process, I remove the tin foil and continue to baste until done. In a separate sauce pan, I use the vegetable broth and cook the remaining veggies. When they are softened, I drizzle two tablespoons of garlic cilantro balsamic, salt, pepper and any remaining oil and serve in a separate dish. When the turkey is finished, remove the oranges inside . Carve and enjoy!

Kevin Roth is the proprietor of The Heart of the Gourmet, which offers free demonstrations at the store located at 816 N Federal Highway in Pompano Beach (Breezeway Shopping Plaza where Zona Fresca, West Marine, and Subway are located, right across from the golf course on the east side of Federal Highway). The Heart of the Gourmet also offers tasting classes Thursday & Friday evenings at 7pm and Sunday brunches at 11:30. Ticket price is $20 per person and includes tapas portions of various menus. And - we offer FREE classes if you purchase two bottles at our store! Once you start using these infused flavored oils and balsamic, you will never go back to chemically filled low calorie dressings for your food. We also offer dips, salts, rubs, and many delicious items as well as furniture from Indonesia for the kitchen and home. Bon Appétit!

FROM HOLIDAY DECORATIONS TO ROOF DAMAGES By: Robert Borowski Allied Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. While Halloween is over, autumn is the official start of holiday season, a time for gathering with your loved ones. There is nothing more charming than welcoming guests with a home fully decorated for each occasion! As you get ready to start shopping for your Halloween essentials, it is important to remember to be extra careful when it comes to sprucing up your roof. © masterOK - depositphotos.com

Beware of the inflatable ghosts and witches! Shingles, metal and tile roofs can be damaged when attaching giant inflatables. Drop the staple or glue gun and choose a less scary approach such as securing your giant fright in your yard.

Frightening footsteps! Your roof is not made for walking, do not be a daredevil and attempt this. Avoid walking on it to prevent wear and tear as well as potential cracks tile or shingle surfaces. The most important thing is safety first - we do not want to see you on the roof as part of the scary décor.

Watch out for excessive lighting There is nothing more lovely than walking up to a home full of lighting to complement this season. There is also nothing worse than cracking tiles or breaking your overhang or gutter. You can go online or call your roofing contractor to learn safe and cost-effective ways to brighten your home.

Found a Contractor - Think Again! Boo Hoo Be wary of contractors and special deals! What happens when you start your roofing project and end up with something other than expect? Complete Horror! If you are in need of a repair or a remodeling, it is vital to do an in-depth analysis on your contractor of choice. Here are some tips on what to check for: • • • • • • • •

Verify licensing - All contractors must carry licensing within the state they work in. You can perform a check for Florida here. Use your resources - check how long a contractor has been in business, go online, read reviews, ask your local community for referrals, contact your potential contractor and ask for samples of work as well as customer references. Documentation - Ensure your contractor is applying for and receiving necessary permits required to complete your remodel or repair. Get everything in writing - this will save you time AND money. Do not forget to inquire about warranties. Payment options - Always follow two rules: Never pay for a roofing project upfront Never make a final payment until work is 100% completed and permits are closed. Choose quality - whether you need a repair or a brand new roof, the workmanship and reputation of a contractor will be the key to restoring your home!

PARTIES Be Prepared and Safe this Holiday Season

By Jay Ghanem

T

hanksgiving 2014 is around the corner.... The air is filled with joy, excitement, parties and celebrations. Good cheer leads many Americans to slip behind the wheel, not realizing that that extra glass of wine or beer has impaired their reasoning.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the title of "the deadliest day of the year" belongs to Thanksgiving. On a typical day, 102 individuals die in traffic accidents. Over 40% of the population travels at least five miles to visit with family and friends during this holiday season. More vehicles create greater conflict potential and this, combined with higher-than-usual alcohol consumption, contributes to its danger. Per a AAA report, the average Thanksgiving road trip is 214 miles, and since Thanksgiving falls on a Thursday, many of us take additional vacation days to enjoy the trip, the family and the festivities. So, to avoid car accidents and to offer a service that is available in most of our cities, a couple of companies started offering a car service where with one phone call, you can have a company come in and drive you in your vehicle to your destination. There is always a car following the driver so that the driver can be picked back up.

© Dudarev Mikhail - Fotolia.com

Another service that is gaining popularity is the "Rent a Driver". This is a wonderful service where you can rent a driver by the hour, the day or for as long as the party lasts. He or she will be dressed according to your specifications (casual, sassy or party attire if requested) and the driver will be at your service - driving you and your guests to any location you desire. So, whether you are planning that bar/party hop or a quiet at home party, the driver will be there to cater to your and your guests' needs. Now, these are wonderful services and the cost is affordable- unless you are requesting a vehicle to go with the driver - then depending on the type of transportation you need, the cost can go up to $1000.00 a day. So, whether you are hosting a party, a wedding, or a special event, just remember to have fun, drink moderately and if you think you need to let loose then make sure you assign a designated driver who will be responsible for your safety and those on the road. Keep your eyes on the prize... Go ahead, spend that $250.00. Order a cab or a car and enjoy the holidays. We are grateful to have you as our friends and customers. From our Family at Auto Tech and Body, we wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous Holiday Season!

news from Broward Health North

SPINE Matthew Moore, MD Neurosurgeon

JOIN US ON NOVEMBER 12TH AT 6PM FOR AN INFORMATIVE LECTURE ON SPINE TREATMENTS AND INJURY PREVENTION! For more information, please call 954.759.7400. Broward Health North is the FIRST and ONLY in South Florida to attain Spine Surgery Certification from the Joint Commission. What does that mean to a potential patient? This accreditation means that the Spine Care Center provides an integrated approach from a multi-disciplinary team including compassionate and caring surgeons, physicians, the spine care center coordinator, nurses and therapists. The Center received this certification for consistently following national standards for best practice in the care of spine surgery patients. This comprehensive approach optimizes patient outcomes in a premier center. What is spinal stenosis? Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the bony canal in your neck or lower back by build-up of bone spurs and thickened ligaments. Who does it affect more, women or men? It affects men and women equally, but is most common after age 50. What are some basic symptoms of spinal stenosis? Most often, people feel numbness, weakness or cramping of muscles in the arms or legs. You

may feel pain down the leg (sciatica), which is relieved by flexing forward or sitting. What test is done to screen for spinal stenosis? An MRI of the spine along with a thorough history-taking and neurologic exam by a neurosurgeon is the most reliable way to make the diagnosis. What are some non-surgical treatments? If there is only mild stenosis, often antiinflammatories, physical therapy with traction, chiropractic care or acupuncture could help. Corticosteroid injections around the compressed nerves may alleviate leg pain for some period. When should surgery be considered and how is it done? Surgery should be considered if the diagnosis is made correctly and a person has not improved with simple measures (above). Surgery should be done sooner if weakness or bowel and bladder control is being affected. Surgery is done while asleep through the back via minimal sized openings to remove/

decompress the lamina (roof ) of one or more vertebrae and ligamental overgrowth. Ideally, patients and their family attend the preoperative Spine Care Center class for optimal preparation and speedy recovery. We found that individualized treatment plans provide the best outcomes. About Matthew Moore, MD: Matthew Moore, MD, FACS, neurosurgeon, is the medical director of the Spine Care Center at Broward Health North. The Spine Center at Broward Health North is the FIRST and ONLY in South Florida to attain Spine Surgery Certification from the Joint Commission. Dr. Moore received an honors degree in Biochemistry from Harvard University and completed his medical degree at Yale University. He then did more than 6 years residency at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Boston, Mass., where he was also the neurosurgery chief resident.

His office is located at 1930 NE 47th Street. Suite 200, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. To schedule an appointment for your back problem please call 954-771-4251.

I'D LIKE TO THINK I DON'T PROCRASTINATE BUT WHEN I DO...

By Charlotte Sundquist

© giadophoto - Fotolia.com

I

’d like to think I don’t procrastinate. In my mind, I am a planner. I’m detail oriented, and am always ahead of deadlines. I write this to get a chuckle from my publisher, as I am currently behind in submitting this article. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t thought about writing it numerous times…

And there you have it, my approach to party and event planning. I hate to admit it, but no matter how many times I break out a timeline or schedule for an event, it never fails; there is always a mad dash to the finish line when the actual day approaches. Now, that’s not to say things don’t get things done in advance.

A dormant over-achiever begins to bubble to the surface It’s just that a dormant over-achiever begins to bubble to the surface. Rather than hire professionals for large soirees, I start to imagine it’s possible to create a dinner menu. And cook it myself. To get a better feel for the ridiculousness of that last statement, one would just have to open the refrigerator door in my kitchen. It currently holds fourteen protein shakes, six eggs, and a large number of half consumed bottles of salad dressing. I could try providing a list of action steps to pull off a successful party that your friends and neighbors will talk about for years to come. But that would be just downright misleading, and maybe even a little hypocritical. Instead, I’d like to share with you Charlotte’s “Five Quick Procrastinator Steps to Creating a Fabulous Evening”. Over time, it’s safe to say I have tested out these techniques and they’ve proven to be very successful.

1

The guests are the most important part of a great event. No matter how small or large your guest list may be, if no one shows up, well, then it’s just not a party now, is it? Be sure to invite people that are entertaining. I find this always helps if there is a lull in the festivities. I can always rely on a friend or two who can tell a great story. And the one thing you absolutely can’t procrastinate about is providing ample notice, date, and location to guests. The rest is easy.

2 3 4 5

If that dinner menu plan proved to be too daunting, make it a potluck event. If your refrigerator looks anything like mine, asking your friends to bring a specialty food item will be much more appreciated. Food will be edible, and won’t appear to have been produced from a can. Pick a theme, any theme. This is where you let the creative side take over. You can encourage partygoers to wear Hawaiian attire. Or host a “Throwback to the Eighties” trivia night.

Provide opportunities for interaction. I’m not talking about those cheesy party games we’ve all been forced into at baby showers, but if you know your guests well, it should be fairly simple to come up with something to spark interest. If your potluck theme was well received, then it’s only fair that you provide beverages. The least you can do is get to the store, buy some bottles and fill up that empty refrigerator. It is your party, after all!

So that’s it! After taking the time to put these tips on paper for all of you, I’m finally ready to host my next party. I think it will be a house-warming event. I purchased my home 14 years ago; I think it’s about time I plan one. Here’s wishing all those fellow procrastinators much success to your future. Cheers!

Right, the Pioneers Club, back in the day.

Around 1950, a few of Pompano Beach's earliest residents established the informal "Pioneers Club." Its rules for membership, however, were rigorous: no one could join unless he or she had been born or arrived in Pompano prior to the beginning of the twentieth century. By the time the city's 50th anniversary was celebrated in 1958, there were only eight members First row (left to right): Betty Warren, Callie Johnson, Loucine Fox, Anna Belle Chapman. Second row: E. E. Hardy, Roland Hardy, William H. McNab. Robert A. McNab.

special to Pompano Today magazine: retaining new teachers

By Michael DiPierro

A

ccording to research released from the New Teacher Center, new teacher attitudes toward their profession start to enter the disillusionment phase between late October and early November. Prior to entering the disillusionment phase, new teachers experience the anticipation and survival phases of first year teaching. The anticipation phase usually starts during the student teaching experience and is marked by a romanticized view of education. During the survival phase, new teachers are bombarded with problems and situations that they have never experienced during their teacher preparation program. During this phase new teachers are struggling to “survive” and are consumed by daily lesson planning for the first time, fulfilling school and district-based requirements, developing classroom management skills, and keeping up with grading. During the survival phase it is not uncommon that new teachers will work 70 hours a week with little time to reflect on their practice or for their personal life. As a new teacher shifts from the idealism of the anticipation phase to the realities of the survival phase, the disillusionment phase creeps in. New teachers know that they have worked hard for the last few months, but feel as though they have not made any progress. They start to question if teaching is the right profession for them and tend to be more inclined to get sick during this phase. Adding to the stresses associated with the disillusionment phase, new teachers are usually faced with their first formal evaluation, back to school night, report cards, and parent conferences.

S F

everal studies indicate that approximately 40-50 percent of new teachers leave the profession within their first five years of teaching. By 2008, about 25 percent of teachers across the nation had five years or less of teaching experience. A new teacher entering the profession in 2015 is about one-third less likely to stay in the profession than a teacher who started teaching in the 1980s. Organizations such as the New Teacher Center work in partnership with school districts to provide induction programs designed to increase new teacher retention and improve student achievement. unded by the federal i3 Grant, Broward County Public Schools has partnered with the New Teacher Center to provide districtbased induction coaches to select first-year teachers. Induction coaches provide specific support intended to help navigate through the peaks and valleys new teachers face. Through collaborative and facilitative conversations, Induction coaches encourage new teachers to reflect on their practice and grow as professionals. In addition to the partnership with the New Teacher Center, Broward County Public Schools offers the New Educator Support System (NESS) to all new teachers. NESS coaches are normally school-based and are another great resource available to new teachers. Thank you to Induction Coach Lori Turner for assisting with this article.

hen did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act? I knew I wanted to act because when I was on stage I felt the most free I ever felt and I felt I finally had a voice. What inspires you to act, produce, direct? The creation of a project and seeing it flourish. When did you realize you had reached your goals as an entertainer? There are certain goals that I have reached but there are lots more to go. What was your favorite role/project to date and why? A little play called "Graceland", where I played the role of Rootie. I loved that character, because of the innocence, the insecurities she developed and the love that was in her heart.

What is the best way for your fans to know what you’re working on? Do you post for your own sites or do you have your assistants do the posts? Best way is on my twitter page or Instagram page. I post my own tweets and photos. I couldn't allow someone else to do that for me because I see that as my voice and would be misleading people if someone else was doing it.

What do you enjoy most about your career? The opportunity to create, to bring something to life. I enjoy the process and seeing the finished project that is when I am happiest.

hether you have a store front or an online boutique, tis the season to start shopping. Each year the trends in shopping change, Black Friday becomes Black Thursday and more stores are thinking of innovative ways to make you spend more sooner. As business owners we always find ourselves (some of us) ill-prepared for the holiday. The good news is yes, you still have time to get the most out of this month and close the year with a bang. It's simple and I know you can do it! K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Silly)

The great news is that you still have time to create a robust campaign. But please keep it simple! Don't go overboard with expensive digital ads, large printing costs or new designs. Think of an impactful yet strategic roll out that will reach the demographic that buys your products or services. Make sure that you are consistent with your campaign rollout. Make sure it's clean and easy to understand. Make sure that there's something in it for your audience. An extra 15% off your purchase if you "share" with a friend and they make a purchase. Make it fun, engaging and useful. Free Tip: Check out picmonkey.com to start creating your digital masterpieces!

Last Minute Shoppers Be prepared for the procrastinators. These are the folks (we love) that ALWAYS wait until the 11th hour to complete all of their holiday shopping. Create a fun and smooth experience for this group to alleviate some of their stress. For example, we can gift wrap and deliver this all to you in two days for this price. Provide last minute discounts for holiday items that you know you will be marking down after the season’s over. For the online businesses, keep your inventory current, and post items that you know you will be discounting to help with a boost in sales. When buyers have options it makes the shopping experience that much more enjoyable. It's possible to close out this year with a bang. Don't go overboard, be strategic and get the most bang for your buck!

You - and your customers can make this a fabulous holiday season!

Extend Those Hours Extend your hours both on and offline. Offer easy checkout, shopping and shipping options. If you have an online store, create a rewards system that allows your customer to shop during a certain period of time. In return the customer receives $50 towards their next purchase over $200 between a certain timeframe. The goal is to keep them coming back for more. You can implement the same strategy in your brick and mortar. You also have the luxury of extending your hours, hosting parties and thinking of creative events to keep the traffic flowing. Welcome to the BaCA Studio Artist Program

BaCA offers affordable private studios to approximately 24 local, national, and international artists each year. Studio Artist proposals for 3-12 months with 24/7 access can be accommodated. Studio Artist leases include private studios as well as access to flexible shared working space. Studio Artists become part of a dynamic community of artists participating in BaCA programming, allowing for exchange and collaborative relationships to develop within the artist community. Artists selected for this program range from emerging to well-established, and work in all artistic disciplines and media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and nonfiction writing, poetry, dance, music, interdisciplinary, social practice, and architecture.

Meet three of BaCA’s studio artists, below! Galen Todd Traxler He is a native of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and is a visual artist, primarily a painter and illustrator. His early training began under the apprenticeship of established South Florida artist, Peter Olsen. His collegiate career was fulfilled at Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Painting. Always having a strong connection with musicians, Todd has intertwined his commercial work with the music industry. He has displayed art and painted live at numerous musical venues, such as Revolution Live in Fort Lauder-dale, and The Filmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater. Todd has presented his portrait work and made collectors of musical icons such as Snoop Lion (aka Snoop Dogg), Steve Aoki, and many others. He has hosted a solo show at the Green Room, Fort Lauderdale, as well as a solo show at Helium Creative in the FAT Village in Fort Lauderdale. For now, Todd finds support and a fan base through musical lovers, family, and friends. Colby DeGraaf ARTIST STATEMENT: I believe canvas is an extension of the painter’s mind and brushwork is a combination of thoughts and desires pushed around in color. Bringing life to my ideas through compositions and formal qualities presents challenges with each piece. I am constantly trying to figure out ways of grabbing the viewer’s attention in a culture that bombards us with imagery. Subsequently, that same barrage makes me feel fortunate to take part in a process that ultimately results in rendering a still moment. In my opinion, representation of the human figure works best for ideas centered on social constructs, so I like to focus on simple gestures in the body or subtle actions by the figure that can illustrate a concept.

Till Next Month

Hope Bruens ARTIST STATEMENT: I have been painting my entire life and always dreamed about becoming a fine artist showing and selling my work. After a 2013 diagnosis of eye cancer, I decided that this is the time to finally pursue my passion. I am painting full time with the goal of making my living in the art world. As you can imagine the possibility of losing all vision in the one eye with cancer is frightening - more so as an artist. With this knowledge I hope you are enlightened as to why this residency means so very much to me.
