“I was suffering from severe ongoing neck pain, arm numbness and weakness - I couldn’t even put on mascara, let alone do my favorite thing in the world –walk on the beach.” After an MRI discovered Susan’s herniated discs were causing spinal cord compression which can lead to permanent damage and loss of mobility, Dr. Matthew Moore, Neurosurgeon and Medical Director of the Broward Health North Spine Care Center, suggested Susan have spine surgery. An anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) was performed to restore strength and sensation in her limbs and rapidly improve her quality of life. “After having the surgery, I have increased my beach walking to more than two miles. The entire team at Broward Health North was wonderful. Spine surgery saved my life.” The Spine Care Center at Broward Health North features private patient rooms for your comfort. Our team of compassionate experts consists of experienced surgeons as well as specially trained nurses, therapists and technicians - all working together to help you dive back into life!

SIX MORE MONTHS AND SUSAN WOULD HAVE BEEN BOUND TO A WHEELCHAIR FOR LIFE.

May 13-17 The 50th Annual Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo The Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo began fifty years ago in 1965, as a Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce event. The intention of the tournament was to keep winter tourist in South Florida longer than the winter months and to bring attention to the local charter boat business. Since its inception, the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo has been a two-day fishing tournament which occurs annually on the third weekend of May. The tournament has been known as the Rodeo since it began and is called such as it ultimately resembles a "roundup" for the most popular species. The tournament has grown over the years, and in 1978, was incorporated as a non-profit corporation. Through the years, the event has welcomed spectators, anglers, sponsors, advertisers and anyone else who has wished to participate in a South Florida tradition. The tournament is also proud of its yearly support as a benefactor to many saltwater conservation programs and marine education projects. The third weekend in May continues its long standing tradition as "Rodeo Weekend," and officially kicks off on Wednesday evening with a party and captains meeting. Thursday, as anglers prepare all over South Florida for fishing, there is one last chance to register for the tournament or make changes to existing entries. Friday and Saturday morning, millions of dollars worth of boats with hundreds of anxious anglers check out of Hillsboro Inlet determined to "roundup" fish to win the prizes and glory of the tournament. Fishing Saturday is only until noon allowing anglers time to weigh in their fish, go home, clean their boat and themselves, and then return for a fun filled Awards Party. Similarly, the swim can take place in any body of water – a pool, a reservoir, or an ocean. USA Triathlon’s Youth Splash and Dash Aquathlon Series will feature a swim/run combination. As an athlete progresses and depending on water conditions, a traditional aquathlon may either feature a swim/run or a run/swim/run combination. The USA Triathlon Youth Splash and Dash Aquathlon Series will be returning for its third year and is open to athletes ages 7-15. There will be forty five (45) events in total with events in each of the ten (10) USA Triathlon regions. The focus is on PARTICIPATION rather than competition. The series will expose youth participants to USA Triathlon and the exciting world of multisport! Timing will not be required at each event, although it is acceptable. All events within the series will be USA Triathlon sanctioned. For more information, visit usatriathlon.org/.

YOU CAN TAKE IT WITH YOU How to pack your executive wardrobe into a carry-on

Photo © James Stafford Photography

By Elaine Simmons

A

long with your successful career comes the potential for travel. Savvy executives do not want to wait for their bags to come off the carousel or risk their luggage getting lost. It is possible to pack everything you will need into a carry-on for maximum efficiency in travel. Use these tips to learn how to pack your executive wardrobe so you are always ready to grab your carry-on and go.

W W

(IT'S IN THE BAG) hen you begin packing for your trip, make sure that your bag is large enough to fit all of the items you need to bring, as well as fitting in the overhead bin of the airplane.

ost airlines allow you to have a carry-on that is 45-to-50 linear inches – meaning the dimensions of the width, length, and height cannot total more than that when added together.

Photo © dmitrimaruta - Fotolia.com

Create a List Make a master list of everything you may need for your trip, and refer to the list as you pack. Only take with you what you will need – nothing more. Remember this mantra as you pack: “Less is more.” Also keep a folder of your travel documents: your airline itinerary, your boarding pass, hotel and rental car information, etc. Roll with the Punches Rolling your clothes will take up much less space and will also help minimize wrinkling. Consider the fabrics you are packing as well. Typically synthetics are less likely to wrinkle when packed, and will not need ironing when you arrive at your destination. Color Coordinate Build your wardrobe around one versatile neutral and one other color from your palette. You can mix and match everything else around these

8 Pompano Today May 2015

colors. Do not over pack on shoes. One statistic suggests that the average female carries five pairs of shoes when she travels. To save space, opt for two pairs of shoes: one pair of flats and a pair of heels, both coordinating with your color scheme. If you want to bring your workout shoes, consider purchasing a compact pair just for travel. Prepare Your Accessories Select appropriate accessories for each outfit, and put them in a Ziploc™ bag. If you are carrying a garment bag as your carry-on, hole punch the accessories bag in the top corner and hook it to the hanger of the outfit with which you plan to wear it. If you are not carrying a garment bag, still pack the accessories for each outfit together in a Ziploc bag so getting dressed is easy and efficient.

Layer Your Bag Start with the heaviest items, such as shoes, on the bottom of the bag and lighter items, such as shirts and toiletries, on top. Fill in the nooks and crannies with your socks, accessories, and underwear. Do not forget to use yourself to pack. Wear a jacket on the plane so it does not take up critical space in your bag. Your jackets will be the biggest space consumers. See if you have any untailored jackets in your executive wardrobe – those take up less space.

(OFF YOU GO!) Your next executive trip will be a breeze with these tips. Remember to make a list when you start and only pack what you need – nothing more. Keep your wardrobe simple and ladies: pack only two pairs of shoes. You will soon find packing everything into a carry-on will happen with ease.

TEE IT UP!

© ClaraD - Fotolia.com.

Summer's a great time to get out on the links the snowbirds are gone, off-season prices may be in effect what are you waiting for? Fun, facts, and musings from your local tailor

In golf, technology has changed both the way a player plays, as well as the way we look. The game of golf demands that style blend with functionality. You can look fabulous in that crazy ensemble – but can you play? Assuming you want to be able to hang with your foursome, you will want to take a look at what you are wearing on the links. Throughout the evolution of golf fashion – think Hogan in a sweater vest to Fowler in his Sunday orange – for the amateur, the spirit of golf attire has remained the same: businesslike. First, you will want to make sure you are complying with the rules of the course you at which you are playing. Once your tee-times are made, take a look at their website; there will be clear instructions regarding dress – this typically prohibits denim in any form – which is amusing…who can swing in a pair of jeans? Think about who you will be playing with – are they close friends? Business associates? Potential clients? Take into account the weather conditions; bring along layers in cooler climates and your raingear on the day you’re playing with the friend who won’t give up in any conditions. Ladies: at most courses women are asked to wear blouses with sleeves or sleeveless blouses with collars, but at most courses, the polo shirt remains the standard. You don’t have to feel like you are in a style rut – there are so many great-looking options out there today – you can comply with the etiquette and still show you are a fashionista while sinking that putt! Last, but not least, the most important item you should include is sunscreen. Men: even if you are wearing a hat, be sure to load up and remember the tops of your ears!

MARITAL MINUTES

By Dr. Gina Stafford

Our Mini-Vacation: 45 minutes from home and a world away

Last week was a normal week. There were no birthdays, holidays, or celebrations coming up. I was going about life as normal until Thursday night when my husband told me that he arranged for us to go on a mini vacation. He advised me that he booked a baby sitter and a pet sitter and we were going to go to an undisclosed location from Saturday until Sunday. I was in shock and was nervous because I never left all four of my children with someone else before. My husband and have not gone away together in over five years. Because of work, children, pets, and money there was always a reason not to go. He did not tell me where we were going until we were on the way. He was so creative and picked a place I never visited before. It was amazing because we only were 45 minutes away from home. It was far enough (and foreign

enough) to feel like we were truly on a vacation, but close enough so that if there was an emergency we could get back to the children pretty quickly. The close proximity also made the trip very economical. The whole vacation only cost us about $150-$200. We had a great time exploring the foreign city. We were able to talk and strengthen our bond. We thoroughly enjoyed all of the peace and quiet we had, but I do have to admit that it felt somewhat awkward having limited noise for 24-hours. Although our day went by fast it was well worth it. My husband did such a wonderful job planning. His attention to detail minimized the amount of anxiety I had leaving my kids for a night. Even if it was only one night, it was our night. I feel so blessed!

fun summer learning experiences

By Michael DiPierro ust because school is out does not mean that the learning has to stop. A summer staycation can be both fun and educational. The following article highlights some wonderful locations around Pompano that will contribute to a summer staycation filled with Pompano history, excitement, and learning.

Pompano offers some great historical locations that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Travel back 1,000 years and connect with the Tequesta tribe at Indian Mound Park. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, this location is a rare opportunity to visit a prehistoric Native American burial mound in Broward County. While at the park you can learn some Tequesta history while walking the trail and enjoying the day. First illuminated in 1907, and also on the National Register of Historic Places, the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse makes a beautiful backdrop for a picnic or some fishing. Visitors can learn more about the lighthouse by visiting the Hillsboro Lighthouse Museum and Information Center or by touring the lighthouse. Rounding out the list of Pompano locations on the National Register of Historic Places is the Sample-McDougald House built in 1916. Although moved from its original location, a tour of the Sample-McDougald House will still provide visitors an authentic representation of Pompano history. Although not on the Register, the Kester Cottages built in the 1940s, similarly tell the story of old Pompano Beach. Visitors can tour a cottage complete with historic artifacts.

The Ely Educational Museum celebrates the contributions of Blanche Ely, former principal of the school that now bears her name, to education in the Pompano community. Keeping with the education theme and worth the drive just south of Pompano is the Old Dillard Museum, which was once the first school for AfricanAmerican students in Ft. Lauderdale. Held the first Friday of designated months, the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center Destination presents “Destination Fridays”. According to their website, at Destination Fridays, one can “Enjoy the attractions, fun, music, signature delicacies, and tourism highlights of exotic places all at one location!”; Friday May 8th is Cinco de Mayo. If you get hungry during your Pompano summer staycation, you can eat at Cap’s Place, which is Broward County’s oldest restaurant and located in Lighthouse Point. (THE DETAILS) Clockwise from top left: This is, of course, the Hillsboro Lighthouse as seen from Inlet Park, which is open late and - even better - always enjoys a comfortable breeze, particularly in the evening, even during the dog days of summer. It's just about our favorite cookout spot ever. Middle: From the very same Inlet Park, one can spy the "secret cove" in the distance. We suppose you could swim over, but we prefer to approach it by land, although it is a tiny bit of a hike from the public beach. Either way, it's worth it! Bottom: One of the several pocket parks that line the Intracoastal Waterway on either side, these are all great spots to grab a little solitude.

TAKE CARE

your health news from Broward Health North

Spine Surgery Deborah V. Appleyard, MD, MPH, Orthopedic Surgeon Broward Health North is the FIRST and ONLY in South Florida to attain Spine Surgery Certification from the Joint Commission. What does that mean to a potential patient? This accreditation means that the Spine Care Center provides an integrated approach from a multi-disciplinary team including compassionate and caring surgeons, physicians, the spine care center coordinator, nurses and therapists. The Center received this certification for consistently following national standards for best practice in the care of spine surgery patients. This comprehensive approach optimizes patient outcomes in a premier center. What is a laminectomy? A laminectomy is an operation to create more space in a crowded spinal canal. As we age, arthritis of the spine joints and wearing out of the intervertebral disks (the shock absorbing cushions between the spinal bones) can gradually reduce the volume of space available for the spinal cord and/ or spinal nerves. A laminectomy simply removes some of the bone from the back of the spinal canal to make room for the nerve tissue and thereby decrease the pain and disability associated with nerve root or spinal cord compression. What is a discectomy? A discectomy, also often referred to as a "micro-discectomy" is a small operation to remove a portion of an intervertebral disk that is out of place and pushing on a nerve root causing pain, numbness and/or weakness. It is a very common operation and most people are in and out of the hospital within 24 hours. What is a spinal fusion? A spinal fusion operation is done when there is either abnormal motion or deformity of the spine. A spinal fusion operation is intended to correct the deformity or stop the abnormal motion by causing the spine bones to heal to one another and stop moving. This can be done in a variety of ways - each of which is tailored to a patient's particular needs. A spinal fusion can be as small as two bones or most of the spine in the case of a larger curve (scoliosis). How long will I have to wear a neck brace after cervical surgery? This depends on what kind of surgery you have. Thanks to advances in the surgical techniques and implants many patients don't have to wear a collar at all. In other cases a collar may be worn as short as 3-6 weeks post operatively, all the way up to 12 weeks for more complicated cases. How long will I have to wear the back brace after lumbar surgery? This depends on the preference of your surgeon and the specific operation performed. After a small surgery, like a micro-discectomy, you may not be asked to wear a brace at all. For spinal fusion operations, depending on the level of the operation and the number of segments fused, you may

Pompano Today.com

be asked to wear a brace from 6-12 weeks. Fortunately, the use of the brace is often entirely up to the individual since newer surgical techniques and implants provide strong enough internal support for the bones and external support is not an absolute requirement. How long will I have pain after surgery? Generally people who have spine surgery go into it already having endured a significant amount of pain due to their spinal problem. Many times this means that patients actually have a significant decrease in overall pain after surgery. There will be some post-surgical pain, which is normal, but this recedes gradually over 3-6 weeks. Should I avoid physical activity after spinal surgery? You should always follow your doctor's advice that is individualized to your particular situation. In general, spine surgery is done to allow people to return to a more active lifestyle and therefore activity is encouraged. Almost everyone will be out of bed to walk the day after elective spine surgery and this is important to help prevent blood clots. From there specific restrictions on activities like lifting, driving, and sports will be individualized to each patient. How long will I be out of work after surgery? This is highly dependent on the type of surgery and the needs of the individual patient. Some patients are well enough to go back to light work within a few days of a small operation, where others may need 6 weeks or more to feel up to going to work. An individualized treatment plan will take into account your preoperative status, job requirements, and the specific nature of your surgery. A return to normal activities and a full life is expected for almost all spine surgery patients as the goals of surgery are to decrease pain and restore function. When I can I drive again? This will be decided on an individual basis and will depend on the type of surgery you have. As a general guideline expect to be out of driving for a minimum of 3-6 weeks. Ultimately the patient will be responsible for determining whether or not it is safe for them to get behind the wheel of a car.

JAY'S PICKS

BUY - OR JUST RENT! YOUR DREAM RIDE The Urban Dictionary defines a Staycation as "A vacation that is spent at one's home enjoying all that home and one's home environs have to offer”. So, if we aren’t flying or walking from one place to another, we will be taking our vacation driving around using most probably our vehicle. There is also another choice: Rent a fun car for the day, week or month!! C’mon, it is our vacation after all. Not all cars have to be practical. In fact, a lot of the time the most fun cars to drive are anything but. Of course, 'fun' is a relative term, and it means different things to different people. Some enjoy a casual cruise in the country, while others find the adrenaline surge that comes from attacking a mountain road - and then there are those who are most happy when they are driving by A1A and admiring the beach, the sunset or the beautiful views…. Now, there are some that thrive to race, like to take their car to an area where there are no roads at all. So, to buy or rent one of those fancy cars- exotic, fun, sexy, luxury, sporty or whatever you want to call it can cost you a pretty penny. We all work hard, so we deserve it! The price can vary from $100000 up to $279000 dollars. To rent it can run you can rent it from $250.00/ day and up. You have the choice. My favorite cars are the following: 2015 Aston Martin Vantage Roadster: This is classy, chic

and speaks for itself. It is luxuriously curvy on the inside and out. I personally like the black or gray in color and it drives very smooth and with its 420horse power, V8 -7 speed semi automatic transmission, it can drive you around time in any speed you wish. Imagine, with the top down and with all eyes on you…well, on the Aston Martin… but who cares, you are the one driving. You will be the envy of your friends and neighbors. 2015 Bentley Continental GTC: My favorite would be convertible, black exterior and red leather interior with gray mahogany accessories covers. This ride is comfortable, powerful, exciting and comes with 550 horse power engine, Twin-Turbo W12 luxury. It is at $200,000 price wise, but would cost less than $500.00 to rent it for the day. 2015 Audi R8 Spyder: Audi has called this model “the Modern Super Car”. It has an understated and yet stylish exterior. It doesn’t scream mega money and yet it is priced over $170,000. It is rockets the R8 to 60mph in under 3-and-a-half seconds, yet its handling - when you want it to be - can be positively relaxing. It competes with the Lamborghini Gallardo for speed and ease of drivability. 2015 Lamborghini Gallardo, Aventador, Huracan or Gallardo Spyder: these 4 cars are not only for the rich and famous, they are also works or art and engineering. Believe me, you will feel rich and famous in any of these rides. If you are to purchase any of these cars, price would vary between $170,000 to

$420,000 and if you are to rent one and money is not an issue, then I would recommend the Lamborghini Avetador with burnt orange exterior and all black interior. The nearly 700-hp motor and sub-3s 0-60 time will make you forget about the price and the gas mileage (11mpg). It rides and handle so smooth that you will agree with me that it is the epitome of luxury. 2015 Ferrari California, Ferrari 458 Italia, Ferrari Spyder or the Ferrari 458 Italia Spider: with prices varying from $229,000 to $326,000, you can’t go wrong with a Ferrari. Just the name inspires magnificent beauty and power. My top choice would be the Ferrari 458 Italia Spyder with red exterior and tan interior. It is considered the best car Ferrari has ever made. It is the most expensive Ferrari with 562 horsepower V8 convertible and 196 top speed, you will be the center of attention and you will be the most attractive driver on the road.

By Jay Ghanem I hope that my choices of cars - which I have rented and driven in the past- will give you an idea that although you are staying home, in South Florida, you can still disconnect from the daily grind of driving your car, going to work and just enjoy the open road with a car that will turn heads. You are the discerning, sophisticated resident of our beautiful town, city and state and you are worthy of relaxing, soaking up the sun behind the wheel of the most beautiful car ever. Whether you want to impress, confirm your status, or just feel the breeze and cruise around town, you have the choice of renting a car that is most fitting for your fabulous style. Once you rent/buy or just borrow any of these luxury cars, I want you to stop by our facility and show it to me. I would love to know which car called your name first. Happy Cruising!

WINTER'S OVER, SUMMER'S HERE: THE KARMA OF TURNABOUT

By Charlotte Sundquist

© giadophoto - Fotolia.com

Massachusetts: apparently, they had quite a winter season this year. Living in South Florida, most everyone I know remains blissfully detached from the misery of friends and family residing in the northern states. We do not slip on black ice. We do not shovel heaps of snow. Nor do we use car seat warmers more than once, possibly twice, in the month of January. This is the story of a recent winter "stay-cation." I moved to Florida as soon as I graduated from high school, perfectly happy in my decision to live in the land of central air conditioning and royal palm trees. When the phone calls rolled in to tell me how awful the weather was in other parts of the country, I mustered as much empathy as I could, and then quickly jumped in the jeep to head off for breakfast by the beach.

My parents, who had recently retired, set up camp for three months This year, alas, it was a bit different. My parents, who had recently retired, decided to take me up on my offer to get away from the winter wonderland in which they lived...otherwise known as Massachusetts. Shortly before Christmas, the folks and their little bundle of furry joy set up camp. Settling in for three months. Yes, I said three months.

I know what you may be thinking. I had many a horrified reaction when I mentioned the plan. I admit I was even a little concerned if we would make it through and remain standing. This was to be a stay-cation not to be defined by the usual parameters....a true test of love and patience would ensue. Most importantly, would our dogs live together without fighting over squeaky toys?

I'm thrilled to report a happy ending This time has come and gone, and I'm thrilled to report a happy ending. For three months, my stepfather cooked dinner every night, and I never made a trip to the grocery store. Hallelujah! I took a week long Caribbean cruise while they watched over the homestead and my dog, Casey. They helped me build and research props for my art events. Despite all those "relatives from hell" stories I heard, I truly enjoyed every moment that they were visiting. I can only hope that they felt the same.

I hear Massachusetts is great in the summer

And now, it's payback.

A BAR FOR ALL SEASONS

C

onstructed in the late 1930s, the Casino Bar was located on the northwest corner of Atlantic Boulevard and North Ocean Boulevard. It was associated with the oceanfront "Kester Cottages" that extended north along Highway A1A. Unlike many beach establishments, the Casino Bar remained open during the summer months. In the early 1950s, the Casino Bar was purchased and remodeled into Pal's Restaurant. The property changed hands several times and was eventually demolished for the construction of a Howard Johnson hotel. Today a temporary beach parking lot occupies the site.

GET SMART || YOUR BUSINESS

THIS SUMMER'S MANTRA:

L.E.A.D.

I

By Teana McDonald

t’s finally summer! The time of year where business slows down (for some), vacation time ramps up and our customers aren’t as consistent as they usually are due to family obligations. It’s perfectly fine, though; use the next few months to L.E.A.D. this summer. Learn, Execute, Accomplish and Discover what’s next for your business. Let’s dive right in!

Learn Use this downtime to learn how you could improve on aspects of your business that may not be working. What processes and procedures can be implemented that will streamline the flow of business, reduce overhead or attract new customers? Attend conferences, workshops and events that will bring new ideas and some fresh perspective.

Accomplish This is not about goal setting but more about accountability. Ask yourself: did you accomplish what you set out to do? Take stock after each month and check in with your list of top five items that you’d like to execute. If you fall behind, don’t get frustrated. Jump right back into the flow and continue to accomplish those tasks at your own pace.

Execute Write down the top five items that you’d like to roll out over the summer months. A new website, a new app that will increase customer service or an emphasis on re-training your employees on business trends, processes and innovative ideas that you’d like to improve upon. Then map out a strategy over the summer months to roll these five items out successfully.

Discover Use the summer to discover new opportunities outside of your business that will contribute to your overall growth and success. Activities such as speaking engagements, business mentoring or writing an article or column for a local magazine are great opportunities that you can discover. The goal is to ensure that each new discovery or venture relates to your industry or business.

Jimmy Della Valle: Promises Kept

By Misty Schwartz

Jimmy Della Valle aka The Brooklyn Buddha has been a National Headliner since the 90’s who has done over 5,000 shows nationally and internationally with many TV/film credits. Jimmy Della Valle is a personable guy, who’s like a “breath of fresh air. With his streetwise edgy flare and mix of macho and vulnerability, you will understand instantly why people love him on or off the stage. This good looking “Character Actor/Comedian grabs the attention of his audience and keeps them on the edge of their seats with his stories. Jimmy also discusses his life’s experiences from what it was like to grow up in a dysfunctional blue collar family where he was kicked out of Catholic school in the 5th grade. Jimmy's had a gambling problem since he was three, as well as many experiences with women before being married to his crazy Latina wife, Vanessa, who is the love of his life. Jimmy pushes his audience’s humor button to the next level with surprising one-liners, impressions, and weird anecdotes as well as audience interaction and amazing improvisation off the audience’s responses. He is constantly writing new material and would complement any show with headlining performances that are always on the edge.

When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act? In 1999, my manager forced me from standup comedy into the acting business. He thought it would be an easy transition, but it wasn't; it took many years and acting classes to get where I am at in my career now. I was a stand up comic but in the acting business it is all about a look and I had the look of an actor.

I got kicked out of Catholic school in the fifth grade and forced to go to public school. They said I was the devil. What inspires you to do comedy? I just love it! I always loved making people laugh since I was in elementary school. I got kicked out of Catholic school for being the class clown in the 5th grade and forced by the nuns to go to public school. They said I was the devil.

When did you realize you had reached your goals as an actor? I never took my career seriously until 2009, right after my dad died of lung cancer. As he died in my arms in the hospital bed, I told him I would make him proud and all the sacrifice was going to be worth it. I then started to focus 150% on my acting and comedy career. I have made a living as a comedian and actor since the late 90's but after 2009 my career went to the next level in writing, acting and income.

What was your favorite role to date and why? I am the lead role in a movie called Rivers 9. It is a casino heist movie starring Vinnie Jones, Jamie Kennedy, Thomas Downey, Elizabeth Rohm, C. Thomas Howell and Ed O'Ross. I shot for two weeks straight almost 12 to 14 hours a day. It was an amazing experience being on set and sustaining a character for the whole film. I never even auditioned for the role; I only met with the director Chris Freeman in a coffee shop and he said he was writing a part for me. Next thing you know the phone rang and I was at the table reading for the part of Bruno who plays Vinnie Jones’s right hand man. What do you enjoy most about your career? I enjoy being able to create my own destiny with roles and also my stand up act. I don't really have a boss like a 9 to 5 job. If I want to work I work; if I want to go on vacation, I go. I don't have to answer to anyone really. Can we expect a book from you? I wrote an idea about a book for a self taught chef who only cooks meat and is now a huge foodie. I have just been so busy I haven't been able to finish it. Tell us something new, something bold that you’ve never told any other magazine‌news tip :) I just created and filmed my own sitcom where I star in it – I wrote it, produced it, and cast it; it’s directed by Eddie Velez. It is called Not For Nothin' and it is being pitched to networks as we speak.

The theme for the evening will be “Let the Chip fall where he may!” with plenty of good-natured jokes and jabs coming from his friends and colleagues. Chip grew up in Broward County, graduating from Northeast High School. Following graduation from Boston College, he returned to South Florida and entered the construction field. In 2005 he was elected to serve on the Lighthouse Point City Commission and in 2010 won election to the Broward County Commission, representing District 4. Chip is president of LaMarca Construction and is married to the former Eileen Dorrego; this year they celebrate their twentieth wedding anniversary. The event will take place at the Deerfield

Beach Doubletree Hotel, 100 Fairway Drive, Deerfield Beach. Cocktails will be served at 6:00 PM, with dinner beginning at 7:00 PM. Tickets for the event are $150 per person, with special tables available at $1,500, $3,000 and $5,000.00 levels. The event’s Master of Ceremonies will be the William J. Gallo, chairman and CEO of Gallo Herbert Architects. Roasters include David Di Pietro, attorney and member of the North Broward Hospital District Commission, Allen Papp, Director of Sales for Darioush Winery, Dr. Brian Rask, DMD and Guy LaMarca, Chip’s brother. The Roast is being organized by a volunteer committee that is co-chaired by Shirley Farris and Susan Gallo. Funds raised by the event will be used for programming and ongoing preservation of the 1916 Sample-

McDougald House, one of Broward County’s landmark structures. The house was moved in 2001 to its current location in Pompano Beach’s Centennial Park (450 NE 10th street, Pompano Beach) and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
