AIR TRAVEL WITH PETS

Get ready for... a semi-thorough journey through the "guidelines" By Dawne Richards

A

s we've warned you countless times before, the best and the worst of our virtual travels through the internet is the myriad opportunities for complete distraction from the task at hand.

ŠGstudio Group - Fotolia.com

to say “clear guidelinesâ€? but ‌well‌there are guidelines, and they vary from airline to airline, never mind country restrictions when traveling internationally. Some airlines ONLY take cats and dogs. Others have breed restrictions. And so on.

One level of service actually ensures that "your animal will receive priority boarding"

The research for this month's column was no exception. We controlled ourselves, mostly, and began with the mother of all travel preparedness sites, i.e. the TSA. The TSA, not surprisingly, has an entire page about traveling with your pets (tsa.gov/traveler-information/traveling-pets). In case you were wondering, this is our favorite quote: “You may walk your animal through the metal detector with you. If this is not possible, your animal will have to undergo a secondary screening, including a visual and physical inspection by our Security Officers.

Just FYI, “checked luggage is NOT the same as “cargo. No, indeed. In fact, one airline has a program that in some ways is eerily similar to a frequent flyer program. One level of service actually ensures that “your animal will receive priority boarding. Wow!

Remember that this is something people do every single day

What, exactly, IS one's liability? What, exactly, is one’s liability in the case of a less-than-friendly Fido? Or Fifi? The words “physical inspectionâ€? and “our dogâ€? bring chills to our spine. Uh-oh, there it is, plain as day: “You are responsible for your pet during the screening process.â€? How unfortunate. This makes us wonder if there is a companion piece, “Traveling with childrenâ€?, that says “you are responsible for your children - not only during the screening process, but from birth to ‌â€? If there isn’t, there should be.

For those of you thinking this – we know, we know! “NEVER send your animal as checked luggage! Barbarians! How COULD you! - we ask that you set aside those thoughts for the moment. This IS something people Do. Every. Day. So it behooves all of us animal lovers out there to ensure that anyone thinking of traveling with a pet be prepared, understand the rules and restrictions, and do their very best to ensure a smooth and safe travel experience.

Oooh! There IS a page about “Traveling with Children. We opted to skip that fascinating read, due to lingering childrearinginduced PTSD.

If all else fails, check out Animal Land Pet Movers (petmovers. com). “With offices on 5 continents, Animal Land specializes in coordinating pet travel to anywhere in the world.

Each airline, of course, has its own guidelines about traveling (whether in-cabin or “checked) with your pet(s). We were going

ACCESSORIES! NEUTRALS! SHOES! You can look great while traveling - really! By Elaine Simmons

Photo Š James Stafford Photography

PACKING FOR YOUR TRIP

About the Author Elaine Simmons is an Image, Etiquette and Body Language Consultant, offering image consulting services to individuals and groups.

Go Reversible Reversible clothing is a great option for traveling. It gives you twice the look without taking up much extra space. When purchasing reversible clothes make sure both colors and, of course, the overall style are flattering to your coloring and shape. Choose a Color Palette Pick two main colors that go together for your wardrobe, plus an accent color. At least one of your two main colors should be a neutral: black, brown, tan, or navy. All of your main pieces of clothing should be one of the two main colors. Scarves and belts can be brighter accent colors. This means that all of the clothing in your suitcase can be mixed and matched to look great together. Pack Lots of Accessories

L

ooking great while living out of a suitcase is not easy. You will find that your clothing tends to wrinkle and it is usually impossible to pack enough outfits to wear without having to find a Laundromat if your trip is more than a few days. For many, what to pack to look good while traveling is a huge dilemma.

Below you will find tips for packing to look great while you travel. Follow these tips and you won´t have to lug three suitcases with you. Looking great while on the road does not have to be difficult at all. Avoid Pure Cotton Cotton wrinkles rapidly and it is one of the worst fabrics to pack when traveling. Instead, look for clothing that is either supposed to be wrinkled (think crinkle fabric) or which is wrinkle-resistant. A good way to pack your clothing is to roll, rather than fold. This eliminates lines and helps keep clothes nice and smooth. If you roll the more delicate items with a thin towel or washcloth in them, it will help smooth them out even more.

12 Pompano Today July 2014

Earrings, necklaces and belts take up very little room, yet can change your look in just seconds. A pair of dangly earrings will dress up a basic blouse for daytime, while a set of pearl earrings and choker turn that same blouse into the perfect evening wear. Bring a couple of different belts and scarves as well, since these can drastically change how an outfit looks on you. Stick to Three Pairs of Shoes A casual pair of shoes, such as sneakers that are very comfortable for walking, is a good idea if you plan to go sightseeing. Dress shoes are ideal for a dinner out with friends or family and, if you are near the beach or plan to enjoy some warm weather, sandals can look nice and still let your feet breathe. If you go with neutral colors, the three pairs that you bring will match anything in your travel wardrobe. Plan your travel wardrobe out ahead of time. Be sure to try on everything before you pack it and be sure to only include clothes that fit great and that you find comfortable. Looking great is far easier when you are comfortable with yourself and your clothes. Follow these tips before your next trip and you will be sure to look stunning wherever you find yourself.

Enjoy! Pompano Today.com

Kevin's Indonesian Kungi: A delicious and satisfying Coconut, Ginger, Rice & Chicken, Shrimp or Tofu Dish Ingredients

Directions

One can of coconut milk (liquid - not solid) Fresh ginger (about two tablespoons), diced One package of Uncle Ben’s Instant Jasmine Rice Coconut Balsamic* Persian Lime Olive Oil* 1/2 block of firm tofu or one cooked chicken breast or 1/2 cup of cooked shrimp - whichever you desire *Available at the Heart of the Gourmet

• • • •

Prepare rice as directed. Presto! It's done. Cut the tofu (or other choice above) into small bite size pieces and put into bowl with rice. Cut the ginger into tiny small pieces, about 1-2 tablespoons’ worth, and add to rice and tofu. Next, pour 1/2 cup or more - whatever you desire - of the Coconut Milk into the mix of rice, tofu (or chicken or shrimp) and ginger. Make sure it’s just moist and not too soupy. I like to add a little at a time so I don't go overboard. Serve on plate and drizzle one teaspoon of Persian Lime Olive oil and 1-2 tablespoons of Coconut Balsamic over dish. Voila!

Fruit and Yogurt Pizazz Ingredients

One cup of plain Greek yogurt Balsamic flavor of your choice* Fruit of your choice * Suggested Balsamic flavors available at the Heart of the Gourmet: Fig, Lemon, Strawberry Peach, White Honey Ginger or Chocolate Raspberry

Directions This is a great tasting desert or snack time dish. • Drizzle two tablespoons of your favorite balsamic flavor over the yogurt. • Add some of your favorite fruit and give your taste buds a whirl.

"When I have my tasting classes at my store, this Kungi is the most requested meal. It is a dish that can be served hot or cold, as a cereal or a dinner. It's easy, and delicious, and nutritious!"

YOUR DINING || WE’LL DRINK TO THAT

The Traveling Oenophile Adding a wine destination to your travel itinerary might vastly enrich your next trip by Harry Patel

O

ne of those most rewarding aspects of being a wine enthusiast is the travel opportunity it affords you. Wine can not only take you to some of the most breathtaking sites in the United States, but can take you to some of the most beautiful places on earth. Wine vacations and wine travel allow you to not only discover great producers around the world, but also allow you to see more obscure and less traveled areas than you can on your average trip. In this article, I wanted to mention some great destinations you might consider. Napa Valley, California – Although this is seemingly one of the first destinations travelers think of when they think wine travel, it is impossible not to mention. A mecca for U.S. wine producers and consumers, Napa is not only famous for its wine, but for its restaurant renaissance. Since 2005, Napa Valley’s downtown has seen a resurgence of new restaurant concepts from the likes of Morimoto, Tyler Florence, and Graham Zanow (French Laundry). If you have never been to Napa, or it’s been a while, this constantly evolving food and wine lovers’ paradise is worth a visit. Harvest is in late fall, so plan your trip accordingly as tours might be limited.

© photosil - Fotolia.com

in Maipú infuses house-made olive oil into almost every dish on its Tuscany-meets-California menu. In Mendoza city, Siete Cocinas is chef Pablo del Rio’s forum for refined cuisine from Argentina’s primary food regions, while Maria Antonieta, three blocks from the city’s main plaza, is a bistro with sidewalk tables and good breakfasts. Languedoc, France – as a part of the Languedoc-Roussillon, Languedoc is one of the world’s largest and most popular wine producing regions. Located in the South of France (known for its sunny climate and pristine location bordered by the Mediterranean Sea), Languedoc is a beautiful destination for both wine travel and general exploration. While visiting the Languedoc, one might be more apt to stay at the winery or a small chalet while entrenched in the tours. Here are some suggestions on where to taste from the Wine Enthusiast:

Mendoza, Argentina – Mendoza sits about 700 miles west of Buenos Aires, and has developed into not only a famous wine region for Malbec, but has become a very popular wine destination. Because of the increased wine tourism, Mendoza has new and improved hotels, upgraded wineries, and quickly developing culture of wine and gastronomy. Wine Enthusiast recommends these dining destinations if you pick Mendoza as a travel destination:

In Lattes, the Mas de Saporta showcases over 400 Languedoc wines and the knowledgeable staff will happily answer questions and make recommendations. In Saint-Chinian, the Maison des Vins’s dispensing machines allow visitors to try 32 wines (red, white and rosé) from across the appellation for a charge. The shop stocks more than 300 wines. Florensac co-op’s Vinipolis visitor center offers an informative, multilingual experience (buy a bottle and enjoy it in the adjoining Bistrot d’Alex), while Faugères producer L’Abbaye Sylva Plana’s tasting room and restaurant are open year-round. In Montagnac, Côté Mas has a tasting room and restaurant showcasing wines from seven Domaines Paul Mas estates. Down near Fitou, the Mont Tauch co-op has an excellent visitor center, interactive displays and free tours.

Mun @ Casarena is a new winery-based Pan-Asian restaurant in Vistalba run by the Korean-American sushi chef Mun Kim, who also offers makeit-then-eat-it cooking classes. Pan y Oliva at the Familia Zuccardi winery

There are certainly more local and affordable adventures to be had when it comes to wine travel. When planning your next trip, consider adding a wine destination to your itinerary to add to the adventure.

About the Author: The intrepid Harry Patel is at the helm of The Vega Company (formerly Pompano Beverage), a family owned and operated business in the Harbor Village Shoppes since 1986. The Vega company has grown to include a wine & spirits retail store (Vega Wine & Spirits), a cigar retail store (Vega Cigars), and a lounge featuring live music and an extensive cocktail and spirits selection (The Vega Lounge). Harry reminds us that “We are always here to meet your needs when it comes to fine wine, spirits, and cigar goods.”

Who Loves Us, Baby?

This season, we're running a different kind of contest. As we all know, there are many companies doing business in Pompano Beach. What you might not know is how many of those companies give back - and give back - and give back - to our community. For this contest, we've partnered with Philanthropia and Thorson Strategic in what promises to be our best contest ever!

Let's show our local businesses that we love them back! Think about the companies you do business with - whether personally or professionally. Think about the ones who go above and beyond - we know there are many! As you may have guessed, the theme of this contest is "Who Loves Us, Baby?" And that's what we want to know. What business gets YOUR vote for "the company that loves us the most?" Drop us a line (actually, 50 words or less) telling us who in our community, in your opinion, deserves this honor. You can send us an email at info@pompanotoday.com with "Love 2014" in the subject line, or drop us a note at 3304 SE 4 Street, Suite 6, Pompano Beach, FL 33062. In July, we'll be tallying the results and announcing a very special prize for the winner! To learn more, visit pompanotoday.com/love.

news from Broward Health North

PROTECTING YOUR SKIN DURING THE SUMMER Melanie Hecker, MD, MBA Dermatologist What is the best SPF to prevent skin damage? Most sunscreens with an SPF — or Sun Protection Factor — of 15 or higher do an excellent job of protecting against ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, the rays that burn or darken skin. SPF is a measure of a sunscreen's ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. Here's how it works: if it takes 20 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using SPF 15 theoretically prevents reddening for 15 times longer — roughly five hours. Another way to look at it: SPF 15 filters out approximately 93 percent of all incoming UVB rays. SPF 30 keeps out 97 percent and SPF 50 keeps out 98 percent. These may seem like negligible differences, but if you are light-sensitive, or have a history of skin cancer, it will make a difference. No sunscreen can block all UV rays. For South Florida residents who have high levels of exposure to the sun for 11 months of the year, I recommend daily use of SPF 50 on sun exposed skin. I also recommend sunscreen reapplication after swimming or excess sweating. What are other ways that I can protect my skin? Look for sunscreens in which zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are the main ingredient. They are pure blockers, have no chemicals and fewer allergens, so they tend to work more effectively. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends several ways to avoid sun damage besides the use of sunscreens. One way is to wear sun protective clothing that has been specially designed to filter out harmful ultraviolet rays. Sun protective clothing that has an SPF rating of 100 or above has been found to be extremely effective against the sun's harmful rays. In addition, wearing a hat with a four-inch brim, as opposed to just a baseball cap, protects the scalp, face, upper chest and neck from excess sun exposure. If you enjoy swimming, walking on the beach or any outdoor exercise, it is important to avoid the peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Remember, it is not sufficient to only use sunscreen when at the pool or beach, but to make sunscreen application part of your daily routine. The AAD's additional recommendations should be used in conjunction with sunscreen. How prevalent is skin cancer in South Florida? Summer is here, and with it comes additional sun exposure, as residents and tourists flock to the Sunshine State's beaches and pools. With skin cancer rates rising annually across the country, dermatologists encourage daily use of sunscreen and cover-ups. According to the Florida Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States and Florida has the second-highest rate of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. How do I know if I have skin cancer? We stress the importance of routine skin screenings to be sure suspicious lesions are not being overlooked. Many times, people come to my office with concerns about one lesion when it's actually a different lesion that may be the problem.

Pompano Today.com

If you have a new lesion that does not look like the other moles on your skin or if a known mole has changed and it is now bleeding, itching, or changing color, it is best to show these lesions to your dermatologist. How often should I be checked for skin cancer? While dermatologists recommend annual skin cancer screening examinations, if you already have had a history of skin cancer, like melanoma, basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, then the skin cancer total body check should be every three months. About Dr. Melanie Hecker: After earning a master’s degree in business administration, Dr. Melanie Hecker entered medical school at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, completed an internship at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and her dermatology residency at New York City’s Mount Sinai Medical Center. IT'S PARTY TIME!

Event Planning! Italian Ices! Party Supplies! And more!

R

By Dawne Richards ecently, we spent some time with three Pompano CRA Business Resource Center clients who were kind enough to take the time to meet with us.

From the whirlwind behind Black Swan Special Events to the unassuming couple running Archie's Italian Ices to the almost-civil engineer(really)-turned-party-rental-king, this is an impressive group.

Business: Black Swan Special Events Owner: Revella Hadley Quote: "We want you to be a guest at your own event." At 9:00 am, Revella Hadley of Black Swan Special Events (http://www.blackswanspecialevents. com/) is a bundle of energy and a vision of royalty in a gorgeous purple, gold and black dress. We wonder how anyone who is up late every night (which we assume an events person would be) could possibly be so energetic and pulled together (a strand of pearls complete the ensemble) at this hour (Ed. Note: we, on the other hand, were going for the “war correspondent” journalistic look, minus the awesome photographic equipment). Back in 2007, Revella tells us in her rich, melodic voice, a layoff gave her “the opportunity to follow my passion,” which, as it turns out, was to

24 Pompano Today July 2014

take an old family recipe for barbecue and turn it into a catering business and an events company and perhaps someday a restaurant. While raising four sons. And occasionally singing backup (I will NOT do solos) in her husband’s band. Whew! It’s only 9:10 am! Have mercy! Revella comes from a long line of entrepreneurs; the soon-to-be-famous, we’re sure, barbecue recipe is “low and slow,” and was served up by her father at the family business, a restaurant on the site of what is now Betty’s Soul Food in Fort Lauderdale. Her decade of experience in management at an enormous fast food company gave her formal foodservice training; her tenure at JM Family allowed her “to see the process of business being done. She is particularly enamored of the Business Resource Center, because “this is all about business being done… Susan [Kores] and Andy [Cherenfant] keep me focused on my business plan.” “I always knew,” she tells us, “that my ultimate love was food.” The recipe, by the way, is a dry rub recipe, and she began by delivering ribs because she saw an unmet need. “You can’t find anyone that delivers ribs, so we deliver ribs!” Indeed. Black Swan Special Events is focused on Pompano because “there is so much going on here.” Yes, yes there is! The company can – and has – served from “one to one thousand, inside and out.” Revella is always looking for contract opportunities (think feeding the reservists) and the stability such contracts bring. In addition, she’s got her eye on mass producing the ribs for retail sale. Well, of course she does. There are, after all, 24 hours in a day. Side note: we would be remiss if we did not mention Mr. Revella (ok, his real name is Derrick Hadley, but you’ll forgive us the journalistic

license), and his band, “The Motowners.” Yes, they’re exactly what you’d think they are. You can find them on YouTube; they’re fabulous. What’s the one thing Revella wants folks to know about Black Swan? “We want you to be a guest at your own event.”

Business: Archie's Italian Ices Owners: Archie Allen and Judy McClam Quote: "Archie's Italian Ice is here! If you need us, we'll be there." In direct contrast to Revella “the whirlwind” Hadley, Archie Allen and Judy McClam are two of the quietest people we may ever have met. At first, it’s hard to imagine the modest, soft-spoken duo serving up Italian ices, but once we start talking flavors, it’s clear that they are passionate about what they do. Several years ago, Archie, a truck driver, saw an ad for the Italian ice business, and figured it was a good way to supplement his income. Fast forward to today, where Archie, Judy and the festive “Archie’s Italian Ices” can be seen all over town. Both are Ely grads (class of ’79, FYI); they are also huge fans of the Business Resource Center, which is helping them to grow their business even more. OK! But back to the important stuff – Italian ice. Archie’s serves up 19 flavors – all of which, by the way, are made locally. Even better, they don’t have a lot of sugar (win!), contain no dairy, and are fat-free (if it sounds too good to be true – sometimes it really IS true). The biggest smile Please turn to page 34

THEN: I-SPY A SCHOOL!

One of the early schools for Pompano's black students was destroyed in the 1926 hurricane. The Broward County Board of Public Instruction (School Board) subsequently budgeted for a new school in Pompano’s black community – it opened in 1927 as the Pompano Colored School at 718 NW 6th Street. Mrs. Blanche Ely was selected to be the school’s principal. In 1954, this facility was renamed Coleman Elementary School, in honor of Rev. James Emanuel Coleman, pastor of Pompano’s Mount Calvary Baptist Church. The building was demolished following the opening of additional schools in the area.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHAPE YOUR SOUL

This month, Charlotte reminds us that travel broadens our horizons in sometimes unexpected ways.

L

Story and Photo By Charlotte Sundquist

© giadophoto - Fotolia.com

et's try an exercise. And I promise, there are no right or wrong answers. There is no self evaluation at the end, nor is there a pop quiz. For a moment, let's imagine that you have just been introduced to yourself. It may have been through a friend, or maybe you met poolside, at a party you really didn't want to attend. The conversation branches off to the topic of travel. Where you have been, experiences you've had, and the people you have met along the way. It turns out to be a great discussion filled with colorful details, heartwarming anecdotes, and even an unfinished story that leaves an odd, hollow feeling in your heart. A few days later a friend enquires how your week has been, and you proceed to relay the story of your chance meeting. How do you describe yourself, this person you've only just met? Do you use adjectives like spiritual? adventurous? giving? driven? confident? Or maybe even reckless...or perhaps lost? I've been told more than once that I can be brutally honest, and that I evaluate situations based on logic rather than emotion. So in what was a rare moment of reflective thought recently (which may or may not have involved a good Chardonnay), I considered how we ultimately come to be the people we are. It would be difficult to dispute that when we are young there are individuals that shape our character or impact our lives, for better or worse. But I truly believe that where and how we travel shapes our lives, leaving snippets of life's lessons that are only acquired through personal experience. I made my first solo trip outside of the United States when I was 21; I chose to go to England and Scotland. The logical side of me rationalized that since they

spoke the same language; I would be able to clearly communicate phrases such as "take me to to the American embassy" in the event I was arrested, or "the queen is expecting my arrival" when I tried to break down the guards in front of Buckingham Palace. I grew up in a small New England town, and at the time most of my family members had never flown on a plane. If you asked me what my influences were to take that first trip, I honestly couldn't answer. I had a backpack, a Lonely Planet guidebook, and the phone number of a pen pal that I hoped would answer the phone when I called. I never made a hotel reservation, and I convinced myself to go where the journey took me. That approach allowed me to wander through Scottish pastures (without getting chased by angry landowners), explore empty medieval English castles, and spend my 22nd birthday in a remote village bed and breakfast.

W

hile traveling alone with no itinerary may not be for everyone, it has become one of my favorite ways to explore our world. It has taught me to evaluate situations so that I am reasonably safe, while encountering people and places that wouldn't have been possible had I not taken a risk and chosen to walk off the well traveled path. I drank Kava in Fiji, hitchhiked to Mayan ruins in Guatemala, and studied Byzantine mosaics in Italy. These events have sparked my interest in art and culture, and have encouraged me to be open minded when meeting someone with ideas and ideals that may differ from my own. So make another date to get together to talk with that person you met. Relive some of those memories that make you the person you are. There are chapters still yet to be written. With every person you meet, every door you open, every hotel you check into...there is another opportunity to shape your soul. And do make a plan to find out how that unfinished story ends.

THE 2015 MODELS ARE OUT, AND WOW! By Jay Ghanem

With all the specials deals that are out there, consumers are getting excited over the new vehicle models with all the bells and whistles manufacturers are supplying for cost to get their cars sold. Imagine, in some ways it feels like we just started the year 2014, and yet the 2015 car models are hitting the market. Here are some of the favorites: 1. 2015 Audi S3: Slightly smaller than the Audi A4 four-door, the S3 will come with around 300 horsepower from Audi’s ubiquitous 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine, Quattro all-wheel-drive and the requisite suspension and interior trim upgrades. 2. The 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe: is expected to be powered by the same four- and six-cylinder engines as the sedan. The only difference is that this car is a high-performance ATS-V Coupe with a 400 horsepower twin-turbo V6 and is ready to take on the new BMW M4 Coupe 3. The 2015 Mustang comes with a 3.7-litre V6 or a 5.0-litre V8, but the real news is you can order one with the phenomenal 2.3-litre EcoBoost fourcylinder. This ultraefficient engine features direct injection and a twinscroll turbocharger. Ride and handling are said to be vastly improved as the car now has a fully independent rear suspension. A convertible version is to be rolled out at the end of the year. About the Author:

4. 2015 Jaguar F-Type Coupe: The all-aluminum F-Type Coupe V6S is an example of Jaguar’s new design language. The car retains the traditional front-engine, rear-drive formula, but styling has been ramped up and modernized. The F-Type sports a supercharged 3.0-litre, 380-horsepower V6 under its shapely hood with 332 pound-feet of torque. Mated to an eight-speed transmission, this coupe will sprint from 0-100 kilometres per hour in 4.9 seconds. Highlights include an active sport exhaust system, Dynamic Launch, and a sport suspension with Adaptive Dynamics. 5. 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray: the convertible version of this dream machine is ready for market, and this sleek droptop will compete with any luxury sports car there is. Now in its seventh generation, the Stingray Convertible shares its mechanicals with the coupe, including its 6.2-L, 455-hp V8 with 460 lb.-ft. of torque. The Stingray has an impressive performance, and a great structural integrity. It is the ultimate driving machine.

So,

if money is not an issue and you are ready to shed tens of thousands of dollars to become the envy of the neighborhood, Happy Shopping, and Happy Driving!

on the verge

VIRTUAL TRAVEL A book can take you anywhere

N

By Jahlisa Harvey It’s summer! The days are longer, the nights are warmer and for some odd reason the people seem happier too, despite the heat. In the midst of July, when the sun is shining and the music is sweet, people are always looking for things to do. In Pompano, the beach is always waiting and calling your name, the movie theaters are always playing box office picks, and the parks are always buzzing with people enjoying various leisure activities. While all these are fun and great ways to pass the time, there may be a thing as too much vitamin D. So when you’re all burnt out, lobster red, and peeling from places better left unsaid, a great way to beat the heat and keep cool indoors is waiting for you just around the corner at your local library.

You never really outgrow eeny-meeny-miny-mo Cliché coming from a writer, I know. I promise this isn’t a scheme to get you to read more or to join the ladies in a wine circle discussing Mark Helprin’s new romance novel (though they are good). To tell you the truth, book clubs were never my favorite. I never liked being forced to read a restricted amount of pages in a given amount of time. Sometimes I would read ahead, sometimes I would fall behind; it wasn’t really for me. Lately, however, being homebound and full of countless minutes and nothing to fill them, I found myself walking the aisles at the Pompano Beach branch

library, stopping to read almost all of the covers, not able to decide on which to start first. If ever you are in need of having a problem, this is the most ideal. So, being the mature adult I have grown into, I finally resorted to closing my eyes, running my fingers along the titles, and counting to ten before opening them and choosing whichever my hand was on. You never really outgrow eeny-meeny-miny-mo. When you become an adult, you lose touch with the little things. You forget to slow down and take some time for yourself. For me, I like to find myself while taking a trip in someone else’s shoes. Live their joys and cry their sorrows. Take a trip to Forks and run with the vampires or a walk through the English meadows hand in hand with Mr. Darcy. Kick your feet up and immerse yourself in the captivating words and dramatic settings of authors known and those who are waiting for their chance to stand in the sunshine.

I like to find myself while taking a trip in someone else's shoes Apart from the readers’ angle with the many libraries that connect our community, there are other things that may tickle your fancy. Events range from family movies, character readings, technology classes, DVDs galore, and video game tournaments - there are many options to fill your time. So next time your girls bail on you, or you’re tired of doing the same old things, stop by the library - never more than a few miles away - and check out some titles that may someday become blockbuster hits.

She is “absolutely obsessed” with the Twilight saga, and has hooked her family on it as well. Now that she has graduated, Jahlisa, who can no longer call herself "The (almost) graduate", is continuing to fulfill her passion for writing, and hopes to influence others to see that “words aren’t just for nerds.”

NEWS FROM THE WEST COAST

stars in your eyes Stephanie Drapeau: Inspired and Inspiring

By Misty Schwartz

Born in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, but having grown up in Chico, California, Stephanie Drapeau fell in love with the stage at an early age, taking part in theater throughout her childhood and adolescence. Attending college at California State University, Chico, Drapeau earned her Bachelors degree in psychology and Masters degree in Social Work, graduating magna cum laude and with honors. After college, she worked for some of the largest U.S. corporations and as a mental health counselor, but in spite of her success in these fields, she left it all to pursue her original love of the arts. Since arriving in Los Angeles, she has performed in over 20 films including Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, Cross, and Closure and TV series Medium and Castle, also working with legendary actors such as Morgan Freeman in Wish Wizard. Drapeau serves on the board of The Boulevard Zen Foundation and is the EVP of the One World Foundation.

Before we begin, congrats on your success with "Wish Wizard". Tell us more about your role and what you did to prepare for it and how it has changed your life... Wish Wizard has been one of those lifechanging films on so many levels. It was a project that [serendipitously] landed on my lap through a director and friend, Andre Gordon. A friend of his from the Make-A-Wish foundation approached him and asked if we would help grant the movie-related wishes of four of their kids.

We co-wrote the screenplay and produced it from start to finish. I played a cameo, but the kids were the stars!

It’s such an anomaly. I just love it. Even when I hate it, I love it… and that inspires me to dive in deeper.

What struck me the most with the entire process was how many people banded together to help us make their wishes come true, from Morgan Freeman on the talent side, to Garry Marshall as a mentoring producer, to one of the wish kids, to the countless cast and crew who donated their time, creativity, and heart to the film. It was such an honor to usher the process along (to learn more, visit wishwizard.wordpress.com). When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act? I knew without a doubt when I was a kid, but life took a detour and it wasn’t until my 20s that the certainty arrived, solidified, and remains. It was my husband who re-inspired me to dive back in. Sometimes we just need one fan to get back on track. He’s been that fan for me from the beginning. What inspires you to act? I’ve had the “acting bug” since I was a kid. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to act, though I did ignore it for some time. I just feel like it’s a part of me… like this is where I was meant to be. The challenge of acting also inspires me. It’s rewarding to dive into a set of circumstances that aren’t actually happening in my life… but are happening on the pages of a screenplay … and to make them real. It’s a visceral experience. This requires an undefinable balance between having complete control over yourself while simultaneously surrendering reality as you know it. It’s much harder than it looks and yet each time I reach a new level of creativity, it gets much easier than it looks.

And I can’t leave out the people who keep my inspiration alive… my husband Christian who is my anchor and my love inspires me toward my greatest heights… and Tom Ardavany, my acting coach, lights a fire under my *&$% to reach my highest creative potential. Without them, my loved ones, talent team and spiritual mentor, I’d be one gal trying to run an entire operation. I couldn’t do it without them. Our interview with the lovely Stephanie Drapeau continues online. Visit pompanotoday.com for more.

It's Party Time! continued from page 24

of the morning from both Archie and Judy comes when I ask about their favorite flavor. Passion Fruit, hands down, although mango is the top seller. What’s the one thing they want folks to know about Archie’s Italian Ices? “We provide excellent service.” And – who knew! – they do private parties. How much fun would THAT be? As far as Pompano Beach goes, these near-natives (Archie moved here at the age of six; Judy, at 13), remind us that “It’s growing; it’s a nice town; and it’s a nice place to visit!” Yes, yes it is! Interestingly, summer (which we all think of as “slow”) is their best season, given the refreshing nature of Italian ice. But no worries! Give them a call and find out what all the buzz is about!

Business: LaBelle Rental Party Supply Owner: Emmanuel Toussaint Quote: "If you don't say 'Wow!', I'll give you a $200 refund." A few minutes after the appointed time, an animated Emmanuel Toussaint comes flying in the door. We’d guess this unlikely event planner/party supply rental entrepreneur/father/master of surprises (his planned career path was Civil Engineering – more about that later) comes flying in the door A LOT. So would you, if you maintained the breakneck pace of this young man (actually, we think he just LOOKS young – must be all that energy! - since his overall demeanor and subject matter knowledge are more befitting of, say, a 50 year old). Upon emigrating to the United States from Haiti, Emmanuel had every intention of continuing his Civil Engineering studies, and enrolled at MiamiDade College. Family responsibilities intervened, and he soon had to leave school to work fulltime. While on his job search, Emmanuel ran into someone who had picked up part-time weekend work for a family-owned party rental business; the business needed more help, so he figured it was a good way to start earning money right away. At his first job that weekend, the setup crew ran late. Really late. Emmanuel, not one to spend time idly sitting around, figured he could make the time go faster if he just set everything up himself. All of it. Tables. Chairs. Linens. The works. Eventually, the owner of the company arrived, and was flabbergasted. Emmanuel was offered an immediate full-time position. Fast forward eight years, during which time Emmanuel had decided to go back to school. Once again, though, life – and a home purchaseintervened. By now, he was managing the party rental operation and realized that, at a familyowned business, he’d pretty much hit the glass ceiling, and he decided that the only way to create a

Italian Ice +Kids +Summer =Winning solid future for himself and his family was to open his own company. Tapping into his by now vast network of contacts, he was off and running almost immediately. “It’s a business that I know,” he tells us, “and lots of people know me.” What’s his favorite kind of event? All of them (no surprise there). Actually, he DOES have a favorite; it’s “when a client says, ‘Just surprise me.’” Wow! Imagine having so much faith in a party planner that you have no idea what he’s got in store for you, and you trust him anyway. We tell him, “Boy, that must be fun,” which gets us the biggest smile of our interview. For any event Emmanuel plans, “If you don’t say ‘Wow!’ I’ll give you a $200 refund.” Now, that’s confidence! “I treat every event as if it’s my first,” he tells us. His advice to budding entrepreneurs? It’s pretty simple, but it bears repeating: • Be on time • Plan! • Communicate – if you know midweek that you won't have something, let the client know right away.

• • •

Do whatever you need to do to make it work. Always put extra effort into the job. “I like to impress myself,” he smiles. “I want it to look perfect.” When your business is how you feed your family, there is no margin for error.

What’s the one thing Emmanuel wants people to know about LaBelle? “We give you the same or better quality for a better price than the big guys," he tells us, and then pauses. "There's an expression in Creole, 'Sa wou pèdi Nan longè wou tire-l Nan lagè'," Emmanuel notes. (WARNING: this is likely not to have a direct English translation.) He continues, "It means "What you lose in length, you get back in weight," or, more commonly here in the States, "You always get back more than you give." We're sure he's thinking back to that fateful weekend gig, where the simple action of setting up for the party led him to where he is today: a successful businessman, feeding his family.

hy is Sheryl Sandberg “Leaning In”? Why is Gloria Steinem still fighting for women's rights at 80 years young? And why are we still trying to break barriers that we clearly should've demolishe d? The simple answer is that we do business much differently than men. This is the age of the woman who’s not afraid to say, “Balance is BS”, "Give Guilt the Finger" and “Stop Trying…Start Flying.” These are the phrases that women entrepreneurs are sharing during their talks. These are the messages that they want the millennials to hear. Let's face it, if men were to use these terms it would be considered acceptable, right? But, when we say them we're considered…well, you know that famous “B” word. There is a new breed of women that are sharing these fun, bold and meaningful messages. These women use their mouths as their BEST asset and can definitely go head to head with the best of them. Women used to play it cool and get along with the “good old boys" in business settings. It's a new day and women are using their best asset to spread their message. Can you guess what our best asset is? Our mouths... that's right! It's a fact that men do business differently. Free of guilt and

emotion. Women do business (for the most part) with people they like. Is that so bad? Yes, it is (at times)! A smart man once told me, “Poor people hold grudges." When I first heard him say that I thought he was a big jerk. But, a few years later, it really started to make sense. Why should we play it cool? Yes, it would be nice to like and enjoy all of the people that we do business with. At times we can make those solid choices. However, there are the times were we shouldn't play it cool. If the other party understands how to be professional and co-exist peacefully, then what does liking them have to do with making money? You said it: nothing. Several magazines - from INC. to Forbes - stated that 2014 will be the year of the woman. According to research conducted by Zenger Feldman and discussed in Forbes Magazine, “Women make better leaders than men. They build better teams; they’re more liked and respected as managers; they tend to be able to combine intuitive and logical thinking more seamlessly; they’re more aware of the implications of their own and others’ actions; and they think more accurately about the resources needed to accomplish a given outcome.” After reading this, it makes me start thinking of the famous Katy Perry song, “Eye of the Tiger.” We're not going to keep it cool this year and they are going to hear us roar (ok I'm off of my soap box). It's a great day to be a woman and to be in business. The list of successful entrepreneurs that we have as role models is amazing. Do you really think that Ellen DeGeneres played it cool when she decided to “come out”? She took a huge hit and finally fought her way back. Do you think that Sheryl Sandberg took a hit when she told women to “lean in” and grab a seat at the table? Oprah Winfrey took a huge hit when we all heard that she was leaving her comfy talk show to start her “own” network. Look at her now. All of these women and countless others are the reason why 2014 will be the year of the woman. And my motto is "Don't Keep It Cool!”

ArtHall: Teachers as Artists

Haven’t we all

had an educator that inspired us? Showed us a new direction? Opened our minds and hearts? This month ArtHall features the work of Andrea Huffman and Simone Spade, art educators and artists in their own right. Join us on July 16, 2014, 50 NE 1st Street, Pompano Beach, from 5:30 – 8:00 pm, to enjoy the work of two who have motivated, moved and encouraged the next generation of artists in our community. Come view the artwork, meet the artists and enjoy the music and refreshments. The public is encouraged to visit the Business Resource Center, Mon-Fri, 9-5 to enjoy the artwork for the month long duration of each exhibit. For more information call 954-586-1111. Andrea Huffman has been an Art Educator for 31 years in Broward County. She earned a Master’s in Art Education from FIU and now works as a full time artist. “The unique beauty of Florida wildlife is a driving force in my work as a fiber artist. Fiber offers tactile and dimensional qualities unlike other media, while essentially maintaining a two-dimensional surface.” Ms. Huffman has exhibited at the Lee Wagener Gallery, Everglades National Park, the Redbone Gallery, and will be at the Anne Kolb Nature Center this December. She is the recipient of a Broward County Creative Investment Grant, and one of only two art educators selected for the first State Teachers Artist in Residence program. She continues to share her passion for art through new teaching opportunities, including Art in the Workplace classes and as an instructor at Bailey Contemporary Arts Summer Camp. Finding Connections Andrea Huffman I am intrigued with the small nuances in nature, the interdependence within every aspect of the natural world and its relationship to humanity. I create works of art on fabric to connect viewers to my personal experiences and observations of Florida’s environment. The unique beauty of Florida wildlife is a driving force in my work as a fiber artist. Transplanted to South Florida from New York City 40 years ago, I have sought to find a vibrant, personal connection with my adopted home in the tropics. Florida’s natural environment, unlike any other, became my muse, inspiring the artwork that I hope will offer the viewer, a glimpse of this breathtaking beauty. Fiber offers tactile and dimensional qualities unlike other media, while essentially maintaining a two-dimensional surface. My work draws upon both fine art and craft traditions, as well as contemporary innovations. I integrate various media, including drawing, painting, printmaking and digital imagery, with machine and hand stitching to embellish each image in a way that will emphasize and convey to the viewer, my initial fascination with my subjects. Through this process I seek to actively engage each viewer in a visual dialogue about our connectedness to the natural world and the desire to preserve its beauty. Simone Spade (whose work is featured on our back cover) has a BA in Studio Art and a Florida Teaching Certificate in Art, K-12. “As an art teacher, I am constantly learning how to improve and understand my own artwork while teaching students how to do the same.” Ms. Spade is dedicated to art education and in 2008 established Studio Spade Kids Art, a private studio offering classes to children ages five through high school. Studio Spade is recognized by and listed in the Broward County Cultural Division’s Artist Directory. As an active Board Member and Education Committee Member of the Broward Art Guild, Ms. Spade oversees the Guild’s annual Quick Draw event, and has developed and implemented art programs at Gilda’s Club and the Children’s Diagnostic Center. Ms. Spade shows her artwork regularly at the Hortt 44, Art Florida, ArtBRAVO, Parker Playhouse, ArtHall and Bailey Contemporary Arts.
