HAPPY

FROM THE TEAM

December

WELCOME TO DECEMBER 2014! December is party time!

Last month, we warned you that it was holiday prep time! Are you ready? We hope so, because ready or not, the holidays are here! This month, check out some surprising gift ideas. Be the star of the show (in a good way!) at the holiday office party, by avoiding the seven deadly sins of...holiday office party dressing. There's some weighty subject matter this month, too - ponder the two sides of "No Child Left Behind," or the three Bs of business. But above all, be safe, and have fun!

Yes, that's Daughtry, captured live at the inaugural concert at The AMP, by photographer Amy Pasquantonio. What is this "AMP," you ask? Why, it's the Pompano Beach AMPhitheater, of course! It's back, and better than ever - stay tuned for more!

Have a great December! Dawne Richards, Publisher

Pets as Gifts

Should animals be given as gifts? By Dawne Richards

W

e'll guess that your first response to this question is a resounding, "No, no, no!" We'd also guess that your response is based on your utter certainty that you've had lots of personal experience with this, and that you know of many horror stories about the fate of an animal, a family, a relationship that received an adorable kitten/parakeet/puppy/and so on under the tree, on the third night of Hanukkah, etc., etc., etc. Well. As is often the case, the facts, surprisingly, indicate that it might be time to question our (no doubt long and dearly held) beliefs about this. Many organizations, including PETA, strongly recommend against giving pets as gift, although they do condone giving a gift certificate to the local animal shelter.

What's most interesting is published scientific research. Of the 71 reasons for returning an animal given in a recent academic study*, "unwanted gift" was the reason for - wait for it - less than one-half of one percent of the animal returns. In fact, in another study, "dogs that were received as a gift were at significantly decreased risk of being relinquished". ** Wow! What's going on here? Are those of us who answered "no" just, well, delusional? Probably not. There are certainly common sense guidelines to giving a pet as a gift. Based on personal experience, first and foremost is "let the recipient choose the animal him- or herself." Duh. While we didn't look for scientific evidence of the importance of this, we will defend this advice to the death. Sometimes, commons sense really does trump all.

Years ago, we decided that our husband really deserved to have a cat. He is definitely a cat person, and he'd cheerfully (and not-so-cheerfully) put up with the dog, fish, birds and turtle in our continually growing menagerie. Not only did we not believe in just handing him a cat that he had no say in choosing, but we thought (and we were right!) that it would be way more fun to surprise him with the cat of his choice. His birthday morning arrived. The children, all young, could barely contain their excitement. After breakfast, we blindfolded said husband and put him in the car (the passenger seat, of course). Ten minutes later, we arrived at the shelter and told him to take off his blindfold. The expression on his face when we said, "OK! Time to get out of the car so you can choose your kitty!" was absolutely, positively priceless. Bonnie came home with us that morning. The resulting drama that ensued had nothing to do with the fact that Bonnie was a gift, and everything to do with...well...that's a story for another day. And while of course it's way more dramatic to have a puppy pop out of a stocking, or a kitten appear on the third night of Hanukkah, trust us. Just...don't. So, if you're determine to get a pet for that special person on your list, be sure to pick up a blindfold first. Really. It's one of our favorite memories ever. * Weiss E, Dolan ED, Garrison L, Hong J, Slater M. Should Dogs and Cats be Given as Gifts? YOUR LIFESTYLE || FASHION FORWARD

The Seven Deadly Sins of Holiday Office Party Dressing By Elaine Simmons This is the season for gingerbread-flavored lattes, phone calls from relatives and friends you haven’t heard from in a while, and a tradition we look forward to the most – the office party! As your social calendar begins to fill up, you want to make sure you’ve got some dynamite outfits that are totally appropriate for get-togethers with your coworkers. The one thing to keep in mind is exactly what not to wear.

doesn’t mean you should reach for your Saturday club night attire.

Here are 7 Holiday Office Party DON’Ts:

DON’T #3: Too-Casual Attire Just because you’re out of the office doesn’t mean it’s time to let all of your welllearned work attire rules slip away. Unless the staff is ringing in the holiday with a trip to a basketball game, your jeans and t-shirt combo is a no-go for party day.

DON’T #1: Serious Cleavage While you may be tempted to show your fun side a little more at a work party that takes place outside the office walls, don’t get too carried away with the low-cut numbers. Just because there’s a dance floor in the room

BAD IDEA! You knew that, right????

DON’T #2: Holiday Colors Feel free to deck the halls—not yourself! Reaching for a bright red dress or a shimmery green number won’t get you into trouble, but trust me and stay away from pairing the two, lest someone gets confused and starts to wrap a garland around you.

THE HOLIDAYS ARE HERE!

About the Author Elaine Simmons is an Image, Etiquette and Body Language Consultant, offering image consulting services to individuals and groups.

DON’T #4: Holiday Themed Sweaters We can’t tell if you’re secretly still holding on to that Santa sweater your grandmother knitted for you that year, but do yourself a favor and keep the festive knits for Christmas day with your family. DON’T #5: Wrinkled Clothes You’re making a social splash at the party—being funny, well-spoken, confident you. But all of your networking will be for naught if you show up in that wrinkly dress you pulled from the corner of your closet, no matter how cute it might usually look. If you have any questions about the condition of your outfit, just say “yes” to a quick preparty iron. DON’T #6: Too Tight, Too Short Dresses Keep yourself on hemline patrol when suiting up for your office party. Remember: Just a couple of inches too short (or a couple of sizes too tight), and you’ll wind up shattering your professional reputation, while being the talk of the evening. And I don’t mean that in a good way. DON’T #7: Festive Garb I’ve already suggested a no-no to the Christmas sweaters and holiday color schemes, but make sure you know that applies to all of that stuff you stick in a box the other 364 days of the year. That includes antler headbands, mistletoe pins or that battery-powered menorah necklace. After all, people are going to be taking pictures at this thing—don’t make a choice you can’t undo! If you've committed any of these don'ts in the past, DON’T worry – it’s okay! Just keep them in mind for your next holiday party. Wishing you all the best for the Holiday Season and a prosperous New Year. Photo © Focus Pocus LTD - Fotolia.com

eaching two “palates” in one experience: Wine glass painting & pairing class - a wonderful gift giving idea!

There is something beautiful about enjoying a favorite glass of vino served in an original hand painted wine glass. Imagine sipping & savoring your wine with a delicious cheese, baguette and fruit all drizzled with infused flavored olive oil and balsamic glaze. Can you imagine anything more unique, and so easy to create? You become the artist of two palates. Quick, and easy. In our store, the Heart of The Gourmet, we started teaching all about infused oil and balsamic pairings when we opened three years ago. We teach how a simple pairing or drizzle can make anything ordinary taste extraordinary in seconds. Literally. Being an entrepreneur, I am always looking for new ways to enhance the food experience. One day my father brought in a dozen wine glasses he painted and asked me to sell them. He was a wonderful artist who not only was a painter but was also an award winning landscape designer. I too am an artist (like father, like son?) and this © Dustin Dennis - Fotolia.com past August, I decided to offer classes in both wine 12 Pompano Today December 2014

glass painting and pairing. Teaching two palates at once! The response was tremendous. Nancy Hittman, who has worked at our store for two years, leads the art classes. The evening (we also have day time classes) begins with wine sampling, along with baguette, cheese, fruit and other surprises all drizzled with flavored oil, balsamic and specialty rubs. Inspired by delicious flavors and ideas, the painting then begins! We are amazed at the amount of talent in Pompano! Even those who claim they can’t paint use beautiful stencils to start with, and end up improvising from there. These classes are great “Girls Night Out”, “Date Night” and “Home Party” experiences. Come in and find your own inner Rembrandt or Julia Child at The Heart of the Gourmet.

Remember: if it comes from the heart, it has to taste good! Pompano Today.com

INDULGE Ten holiday gifts that go "Vroom!" By Jay Ghanem There are excellent car deals during the holiday season. One of the main reasons automakers offer great discounts because they are anxious to get rid of the current year's car models to thin out their inventory to make space in their showrooms for the incoming models and boost their sales figures. Add to it the charm of the gift giving season since many are excited to surprise their loved ones with a special gift such as a car, and we have a winning combination. This year's best Holiday Car deals are predicted to be the following: - Acura MDX: A midsize crossover SUV that can seat up to eight passengers. It is elegant, dependable and fairly priced. - Acura ZDX: This odd fish-shaped crossover SUV is essentially an Acura MDX beneath the skin; unfortunately it trades off certain elements of utility for the sake of its coupe-like profile. Still, it’s a solid performer and certainly stands out in a crowded parking lot. - BMW 550 Gran Turismo: A 400-horsepower V8-powered version of what is essentially a hatchback alternative to BMW’s coveted 550 sedan. It combines wagon-like versatility with a sleek coupe-like roofline, though it finds fewer buyers in the U.S. than the rest of the 5 Series line. You’ll find similar incentives on the 443-horsepower 2013 BMW 650 Gran Coupe, which is the (misnamed, we think) four-door version of the 650 coupe. - BMW Hybrids: the ActiveHybrid 3 is the best bet here, with lively driving dynamics and at 25/33 mpg city/highway, the best fuel economy of the bunch, with the larger and costlier ActiveHybrid 5 a close second at 23/30 mpg.

- Cadillac SRX, Chrysler 300, and Lincoln Navigator: If you want to opt for an American luxury beauty with efficiency on gas and mileage then you have a winner with the latest models, redesigned styles and gorgeous interior of any of these vehicles. - Jeep SRT8 Grand Cherokee: Which is a guilty pleasure with its truly quick 6.4-liter 470-horsepower V8 engine. The rest of the Jeep line isn’t too shabby, either. - Land Rover Range Rover: The venerable Range Rover got a major makeover. This is the luxury SUV and ultimate 4x4... This vehicle has its own commanding, depending personality. - Tesla S: This the ultimate electric and luxury car. The founder wanted to add "Sex" to the car's appeal as well as name- thus Tesla's new car S3X isn’t too far off, come to think it. Predictions are made that this vehicle will catapult Tesla into mainstream car culture in a sudden, historic and irreversible way when it debuts. - Lamborghini Veneno Roadster: with a starting price of $4.5 million and only 9 copies of the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster in 2014. Among many other innovations its lightweight body design makes extensive use of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer. With a top speed is 221 mph, this will be the ultimate gift anyone can receive. Of course, if money is not a problem, then why not! Go ahead and spoil yourself or others… It is the holiday season after all... Just remember, the best of all gifts around is the presence of happy family and friends all wrapped up in each other. Happy Holidays from our family to yours!

news from Broward Health North

PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE Robert Jimenez, MD Vascular Surgery

What is Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)? Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) occurs when the arteries become narrowed by atherosclerosis and restrict the flow of blood to organs or tissues. It is the same process that causes heart attacks or strokes. For instance, heart attacks occur when arteries to the heart are narrowed, while strokes are caused when arteries to the brain are narrowed. What are the symptoms of PAD? The symptoms vary depending on which arteries are involved. Most commonly, the arteries to the legs are affected. A key point to remember is that the process occurs everywhere in the body at about the same rate. If you are at risk of having a heart attack or stroke, then you’re at risk for PAD. What are the risk factors for PAD? Age, gender, smoking history and medical history are risk factors for PAD. Most patients with symptomatic PAD are over the age of 70. Men are affected more frequently than women and at an earlier age. However, as women age, the incidence of PAD becomes equal. Smokers develop PAD approximately 10 years earlier than the rest of the population. Other risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and kidney disease. In general, PAD can be managed by controlling your risk factors. Manage your blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol. Also, be sure to quit smoking.

Do people’s legs hurt or ache because of PAD? The most common complaint from patients is pain in their legs while walking or exercising. Typically, the pain develops in the calf or thigh with exertion. The pain is relieved with rest and reoccurs when walking the same distance. Other symptoms of PAD include a wound on the foot, heel or leg that won’t heal or heals very slowly. Also, any infection involving the lower extremity raises suspicion for PAD. What test is done to screen for PAD? If your doctor suspects you have PAD, he will refer you to a vascular surgeon. The first test is a simple, physical exam. Also, your doctor may ask you some questions that may confirm you have PAD. The next step is to obtain an ultrasound. What are some non-surgical treatments? Most patients with PAD do not need surgery. Usually, the first step is to begin an exercise regimen. When should surgery be considered and how is it done? The decision for surgery depends on what arteries are affected and the severity of the damage. If you have an ulcer, an infection or pain (even while at rest) you will benefit from surgery.

If surgery is needed, the procedure is done through a hole approximately 2-3 mm in diameter, which is about the size of the ink filter in your pen. The patient generally goes home the same day and there are no restrictions in your activity 24 hours after surgery. About Robert Jimenez, MD: Dr. Robert Jimenez received his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health in Columbus, Ohio. He completed his general surgery residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, Fla. and his Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Maimonides Medical Center in New York. His office is located at 3467 W Hillsboro Boulevard, Suite B in Deerfield Beach, Fla. To schedule an appointment, please call 561-483-3989.

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, DO UNTO OTHERS

A

By Charlotte Sundquist

s I am driving through my neighborhood watching the city workers install Christmas wreaths on telephone poles, I have decided. There will be no holidays in my household this year, at least not in our current traditional sense. You see, my interpretation of recent traditions has become clouded by visions of stampeding crowds, high credit card statements, and blurry lines between when shopping ends and the actual holiday celebrations begin. You might even say I'm boycotting. This is a year to attempt to refocus. I will not lament about the deterioration of the true meaning of what the holidays should be; instead I will make a personal commitment to take responsibility regarding my methods of celebration. For the month of December, it comes down to this: I am going to do something every day to make mom proud. I will not create any future financial hardship. I will not curse at the individual in front of me, who clearly cannot drive. It is my mission to be nice, do thoughtful acts, and exhibit my own version of peace on earth and goodwill to all mankind. And animals. I can't forget about animals. That's it, those are my rules. With any luck, and thirty-one days of practice, maybe it will be possible to make it a permanent habit.... While devising my plan, I had a thought briefly go through my head that I was getting old. (Gasp!) The more decades you pass though, the easier it becomes to say "it's just not the same as when I was a kid". Still, there are some things that can never be erased. I would venture to say that gift cards are here to stay. And I don't see the possibility of the $4.00 latte ever disappearing. But having empathy and being considerate are human traits that still also exist all around us. We just may have to look a little harder to find them in recent years. So what are acts that I can do to make my mom proud? I'm referring to an act that produces one of those huge ear to ear beaming smiles. Or maybe tears of pride and joy? This may be tough.

I started searching the internet, and wow! There are lots of people out there in cyber world that offer ideas on how to bring a smile to someone’s face...let alone just mom's. I thought I’d share some here to get started:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Go to the pediatric unit at your local hospital and bring coloring books and new crayons for the children Put post it notes with positive messages on mirrors (e.g. You're awesome!)

Donate your old cell phones to a local domestic violence shelter program Hand write a thank you note to a high school teacher that made a significant impact on your life.

Spend time with abandoned dogs or cats at a shelter Read to kids at an after-school program

Babysit for a single mom, for free. Do the dishes without being asked.

There you have it! Apparently this will be easier than I thought! It doesn't take bucketfuls of money. And on a selfish note, I expect it will have huge benefits to my own well-being. Until the new year, I want to wish everyone a wonderful and safe ending to 2014, and an even more rewarding new year!

THEN: COTTAGE STYLE

We often think of Kester Cottages as small one-story wooden structures, and at first they were. William L. Kester's initial development of beach cottages in 1937 proved so popular that he later began to have larger "cottages" constructed. Like the one-story Kester cottages, the two-story buildings were located on the beach, toward the northern end of what is today Pompano's public beach. In the late 1950s and 1960s all the beach Kester cottages were removed for new development, but whereas many of the one-story Kester cottages were moved to new locations, it appears all of the two-story structures were demolished.

special to Pompano Today magazine: a look at No Child Left Behind

By Michael DiPierro The discussion over the merits of increased accountability, annual standardized testing, and “teaching to the test” have grown significantly since the implementation of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation in 2002. At its heart, the legislation increases the federal government’s role in education in part by attaching federal school funding to the yearly administration of state developed standardized tests. As the year 2014 draws to a close, we should reflect on how public schools educate our children and the idea that according to goals set by the No Child Left Behind Act the year 2014 was the intended target for 100% of students to demonstrate proficiency on state reading and mathematics assessments. The purpose of this article is not to promulgate an opinion on NCLB or add fuel to a burning topic; in fact it would be foolish of me to relegate such a complex and important discussion to a mere 500 words. My goal is to simply reflect on the last decade-plus of NCLB and encourage readers to think about the future of education in America. The rest of this article will merely present some of the ideas surrounding the NCLB discussion, which will hopefully lead to further research, not just on NCLB, but on the greater topic of educating our future. Many proponents of NCLB argue that high stakes standardized testing holds teachers and school systems more accountable for the successes and failures of their students. Advocates of NCLB contend that the standardsbased curriculum provides educational equality for all students and that

NCLB will close existing achievement gaps. Supporters of the Act point out that it provides students with school choice and free tutoring. Additionally, friends the Act cite that scores on national tests, such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), have been positively impacted by NCLB. Detractors of NCLB will note that high stakes testing leads to “teaching to the test”, lowering of standards, and the penalization of high-need schools. They argue that “one-size does not fit all” and that the legislation neglects to incentivize pushing gifted and advanced students past the minimum expectations. Many opponents to the Act claim that only a very small percentage of students take advantage of the school choice options and tutoring. Furthermore, opponents point out that American students do not score well enough on international tests such as the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). How to educate the future is a difficult question to grapple with because it has personal and public implications, has become a local, national, and global issue, and the question must consider the diverse social and economic realities facing our students. Additionally, we are preparing students for many jobs that have yet to be created and for a future that is still undefined.

Jeff Bornstein: "I LOVE to perform!"

By Misty Schwartz

When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to do magic and act? When I was ten, my parents bought me a magic kit and every Saturday I would perform magic shows for family and neighbors. What inspires you to act, produce, direct? My driving force is life, to amaze people, to make them laugh whether in front of a camera or on stage but the biggest kick I get, if I screw up on camera, CUT... Back to “ONE”, on stage, there is no going back... That’s my drug, I LOVE to

perform.

When did you realize you had reached your goals as an entertainer? I’m always reaching new goals, I never see myself sitting in a chair one day saying, “reached all my goals, now what?”. I need to stay green... Green is good, ripe you rot! What was your favorite role/project to date and why? I have quite a few but the few that come to mind: • As a stuntman, literally getting knocked out by Sylvester Stallone in the movie “The Specialist”. It was an accident but hey, that’s what we get paid for but the best part... I have a story! • As an actor, I don’t really have a favorite role, as of yet. I do get cast mostly as the mob boss or “THAT GUY”. • As a magician, my favorite project would have to be when I entertained the troops in the Middle East, we did 32 shows in 23 days... AMAZING! What do you enjoy most about your career? My career is a “I GET TO”... Every day I get to wake up and do what I love to do... Entertain. Can we expect a book from you? Nah... At least that’s not in the master plan however I

think a documentary on my life would be interesting... Just

Keep up with Jeff online!

putting it out there.

his is not the end; it’s just the beginning! Every time we get to this phase (end of the year) of our professional and personal lives we reflect on the things that we did not accomplish, the goals we did not meet and the long road ahead to get to where we really want to be. Stop the madness and mindless chatter. Let’s talk about the three B’s.

Your Business Some of us are closing out the year with a bang, while some of us are closing the doors forever. It doesn’t matter if you’ve succeeded or failed. What matters is what you’ve learned during the process that will carry you through the next phase of running your business or starting something new. With each experience you’ve tried new things, you’ve taken risks and you’ve figured how to navigate through the rocky entrepreneurial waters. Did you make it out on top, maybe you did and maybe you didn’t. But, I guarantee that you’ve picked up several invaluable lessons that will carry you through the next year. Don’t focus on the business; focus on how you’ve grown from the business. Balancing Act We all played this game this year, didn’t we? How many times did you fail while balancing several different projects, activities and events? How many times this year did you overbook, double book or triple book yourself? How many times were you really present? I

mean really present and not thinking about the thousands of other meetings, tasks and commitments that you had to take care of? Do something BIG in the New Year, stop playing the balancing act! Make a choice to do what matters, what counts and what makes sense. Does it make sense for me to blow off my son’s football game if I have the opportunity to meet with a lucrative client and close a deal? The answer is yes! That new client will help pay for many more seasons of football, right? There is no such thing as balance. Make a choice and stick with it. This will allow you to set clear boundaries, be present and create a positive shift in your professional and personal life.

Keep it real and ask yourself those though questions Stop The BS! Need I say more? The business and the balance are BS if you are not clear with your mission, vision, passion and purpose (ok, I’m getting a little Oprah on you- I know). I always urge you to “keep it real” and ask yourself those tough questions about your business. As an entrepreneur you MUST have a vision for what this business and this life will look like. Just like you have a vision for what a size 4 or 6 looks like, right? Stop the BS, ask the tough questions and do what it takes to get on track and create the life and the business that you know you deserve. If the vision is not having a business, then figure out the next phase of your life.
