June CELEBRATIONS © vlad61_61 - Fotolia.com

"All June I bound the rose in sheaves, Now, rose by rose, I strip the leaves." - Robert Browning It's Aquarium month! Jacques Cousteau was born on June 11, 1910, and what better way to celebrate than to enjoy the glorious "aquarium" all around us? According to the American Gem Society, June actually has three birthstones - the pearl, the Alexandrite, and the moonstone. The Alexandrite actually changes color depending on the light source, and the moonstone comes in a variety of colors. The June flower is the rose.

IT'S JUNE! THAT MEANS...

Hurricane Season Get your pets ready! By Dawne Richards

M

ŠGstudio Group - Fotolia.com

ost of you probably know that ready.gov contains a wealth of information on emergency preparedness. (You're ready, right? Right???)

Please note that many shelters do NOT take pets. It is IMPERATIVE that you have a plan in place well before hurricane season - like, today!

What you may not realize, however, is the extent to which those of us who have pets must also plan for their care, feeding and shelter should really bad weather (we just can't bring ourselves to say the "H" word yet) come our way.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc. gov), "As persons are displaced from their homes into evacuation centers, they often wish to bring companion animals with them. Having a pet nearby may serve as a source of comfort to someone who has lost their possessions and, perhaps, family members. Unfortunately, many disaster evacuation centers (and specifically Red Cross evacuation centers) cannot accept pets because of states' health and safety regulations. Pets kept at human evacuation centers can sometimes pose a risk of disease or injury to other shelter inhabitants. In fact, service animals that assist people with disabilities are currently the only animals allowed in some evacuation centers."

Luckily, the site has everything needed to prepare our four-legged, feathered, acquatic, and other friends for such an emergency. Read on for more. According to ready.gov, you can best plan for pet needs during a disaster by doing the following: •

•

•

• •

Identify shelter. For public health reasons, many emergency shelters cannot accept pets. Find out which motels and hotels in the area you plan to evacuate to allow pets well in advance of needing them. There are also a number of guides that list hotels/motels that permit pets and could serve as a starting point. Include your local animal shelter's number in your list of emergency numbers. They might be able to provide information concerning pets during a disaster. Take pet food, bottled water, medications, veterinary records, cat litter/pan, manual can opener, food dishes, a first aid kit and other supplies with you in case they're not available later. Before you find yourself in an emergency situation, consider packing a "pet survival" kit which could be easily deployed if disaster hits. Make sure identification tags are up-to-date and securely fastened to your pet's collar. If possible, attach the address and/or phone number of your evacuation site. If your pet gets lost, his tag is his ticket home. Make sure you have a current photo of your pet for identification purposes. Make sure you have a secure pet carrier, leash or harness for your pet so that if he panics, he can't escape.

10 Pompano Today June 2014

If you are NOT in an evacuation zone and are riding out the storm at home, be sure to remember the following (thanks again to ready.gov): • • •

•

Bring your pets inside immediately. Have newspapers on hand for sanitary purposes. Feed the animals moist or canned food so they will need less water to drink. Animals have instincts about severe weather changes and will often isolate themselves if they are afraid. Bringing them inside early can stop them from running away. Never leave a pet outside or tied up during a storm. Separate dogs and cats. Even if your dogs and cats normally get along, the anxiety of an emergency situation can cause pets to act irrationally. Keep small pets away from cats and dogs.

For so many of us, pets are members of the family. For your pets' sake. be sure that you're adequately prepared to take care of every member of your family should we have to utter the dreaded "H" word sometime in the next six months.

BEACHWEAR DON'TS

Don't be caught looking like a...well...you know By Elaine Simmons

T

Photo © James Stafford Photography

8 BAD BEACHWEAR IDEAS

About the Author Elaine Simmons is an Image, Etiquette and Body Language Consultant, offering image consulting services to individuals and groups.

he most popular water adventure in Florida is the beach. As summer approaches the only thing we think about is what swimsuit we will wear. It doesn’t matter whether you like to show off your curves or hide them. Big Shirts

High Heels

There’s a time and a place for high heels, and a day at the beach is never one of them. No matter how many cute high heel shoes you have in your collection, you must have many more sand-appropriate footwear options. Ladies, wouldn’t you have more fun in flip flops?

Speedos

This one is for you guys. Please don't wear those tight little Speedo's to the beach. I've never met one person who thought they looked attractive except maybe the guy wearing them. Give us a break and keep a little more of yourself to yourself with swim trunks that won’t make us blush when we look your way.

Boots

There are so many things to love about boots. They have become very popular to wear with shorts and can give an everyday look a classy or interesting or sexy twist. But at the beach, they are sand buckets.

Ladies, a big t-shirt at the beach doesn't hide anything except that cute swimsuit underneath. If you're feeling a little self-conscious about your body and don't want to show a lot of skin invest in a cute cover up that shows off your best assets and draws attention away from those areas that you don't feel comfortable showing.

Lots of Bling

I can never figure out why women come to the beach wearing lots of jewelry. Not only do you run the risk of losing your jewelry in the sand; after being in the sun for a couple of hours jewelry can get hot and cause nasty burns. If you want to add a little sparkle to your beachwear, leave the bling at home and show off your glamorous side with a pair of rhinestone studded shades, sparkly sandals or a shimmery swimsuit.

Leather

Leather is a bad idea at the beach. You’ll sweat like nobody’s business, and when you peel off the offending garment, it’ll turn into a sand magnet. Have fun getting it back on when it’s time to go home.

Street Clothes Socks

Surfers, you’re the only ones excused from this rule. Go ahead and wear your special surfer socks when you’re riding the waves. Everyone else, lose the socks.

12 Pompano Today June 2014

There is nothing comfortable or attractive about wearing your street clothes while taking a dip in the ocean. Sand and seaweed get caught in the weirdest places and your clothes weigh a ton. Not to mention that when the day is over you have to wear them home. If you're planning on heading to the beach this summer take a few extra minutes to grab a swimsuit.

YOUR DINING || WE’LL DRINK TO THAT

Chemistry Lesson! Why beer is a great summer choice - and yes, you CAN make your own! by Harry Patel

A

s you struggle to find ways to hydrate in the summer heat, beer is a great option. Beer is made up of 95% water by weight. What better way to get the additional water you need in the dog days? Great beers start with great water.

Maltingandbrewing.com has simplified the language of the very complex chemistry of water in the beer-making process. Water impacts beer in three ways: 1. 2. 3.

Mashing process – impact on enzyme efficiency and flavor of wort (the liquid that is extracted from the mashing process). Hop utilization – water pH effect on hop utilization. Beer flavor – water adds flavor directly to the beer itself.

Beer styles can benefit from minerals (or lack thereof) in the water. While a bit technical, it is interesting to show how very different beer styles depend on water to bring out their core characteristics. Lager beer • Soft water with low mineral content, low carbonates • Calcium ions are important at levels > 30 mg/l. Pale Ales • Bicarbonate < 60 mg/l • Calcium > 125 mg/l • Sulfates > Chloride to bring out the bitter flavors Mild Ales and Stouts • Carbonates < 60 mg/l • Calcium > 75 mg/l for mild ales • Calcium > 30 mg/l for stouts

© photosil - Fotolia.com

If the connection hasn’t happened for you yet, this is the reason why certain parts of the world are best know for their incredible beers. Dublin, for example, has very hard water (lots of calcium). Hard water makes for good stouts (hence Guinness). Pilsen in the Czech Republic has very soft water, idea for making lagers (known as Pils). In England, the water is rich in gypsum (a sulfate), which is great for the production of Pale Ales. For some domestic examples, take the Russian River where Lagunitas Brewing Company sources water for their beer. High in sulfates and calcium, the Russian River allows breweries using its water to create award winning Pale Ales and IPAs (India Pale Ales), typically bitter in their expression. Coors Brewery in Golden Colorado was a Gold Medalist in the American Premium Lager category (2004 and 2009) at the Great American Beer Festival. Coors has built its brand around its “taste the Rockies” slogan. Where the Coors Brewery is located (about 20 minutes drive west of Denver), the Rocky Mountain spring water provides soft water with relatively low mineral content, allowing the brewery to consistently brew its award winning beer. You too, however, can create award winning beer despite your being surrounded by only salt and/or swamp water. Home brewing kits can allow you to customize the mineral content of the water you use for your home brew. Do some research on the type of beer you would like to brew, and the chemistry it requires. Armed with that knowledge, you can create your main ingredient consistently each time you want to make a beer batch. And if all this sounds too complex, and you just want a damn beer, then grab one off the shelf at your local store and enjoy. The hard work has already been done for you. Remember always to hydrate responsibly, and we’ll say “Cheers to that!”

About the Author: The intrepid Harry Patel is at the helm of The Vega Company (formerly Pompano Beverage), a family owned and operated business in the Harbor Village Shoppes since 1986. The Vega company has grown to include a wine & spirits retail store (Vega Wine & Spirits), a cigar retail store (Vega Cigars), and a lounge featuring live music and an extensive cocktail and spirits selection (The Vega Lounge). Harry reminds us that “We are always here to meet your needs when it comes to fine wine, spirits, and cigar goods.”

hen athletes and spectators come to stay and play in Florida, they know it’s a given there will be sunshine and warm temperatures 12 months of the year. And, as the sports world evolves into the 21st century, the Sunshine State has done its best to stay ahead of the curve in an industry that is now a $44 billion annual benefit to the state, attracting 13 million visitors and supporting over 430,000 jobs statewide. The state of Florida can boast of many sports facilities attracting championship events from Pensacola to Key West. Recent feathers in Florida’s cap include 42 NCAA Championship events awarded to the state between 2014 and 2018 and the 2017 College Football National Championship Game, which will be played in Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium. In the last five years, several state-of-the-art venues have been constructed to attract international prominence to Florida for years to come.

Surrounded by bodies of water, Florida is also known as a fishing and boating paradise. Fishing and boating shows can be found year round in various parts of the state to satisfy the newest equipment needs of the millions of fishing enthusiasts in fresh and salt water and thousands of boats of all shapes and sizes. Finally, who can forget the Florida Golf Industry? On over 1,100 courses statewide, golfers can choose from a variety of forgiving courses to ones as challenging as the professionals experience. While the casual golfer tries out the latest equipment at the PGA Merchandise Show, held every January in Orlando, the world’s top golfers experience some of the best courses in the world when they play in one of the five PGA Tour stops held in Florida each year March through May. Along with the opportunity to compete in all 12 months of the year, it is no surprise that sports leaders from around the world have taken notice of the innovative thinking and ideas happening both on and off the field, further solidifying Florida’s reputation of “Where The World Comes To Play.”

ALL YOUR DREAMS CAN COME TRUE By Jay Ghanem

We all know why we love to live in Florida - the sun, sand, and seashore. Tourists from all over the US, South America and the world make Florida- especially South Florida- their destination for vacations, spring break or to stay for few months out of the year. I am sure we all know a snow bird or someone who is trying to move to Florida and make Fort Lauderdale or Pompano Beach their permanent home. We are on a sensory overload in South Florida. Besides the natural beauty along with the manicured lawns and the clean highways, we have tidal flats, teal water and beautiful sunshine most of the year. South Florida is famous for many things including having many newer style cars as well as fast cars coupled with luxury lifestyles. Of course, for the regular consumer, a Toyota, Cadillac or Honda will do, but for the consumer that is thinking of adventure- maybe that tourist who is imagining himself in an exotic sports car driving through some of the most beautiful roads in the country, such as A1A, then it is the excitement and the adrenaline-filled drive that they would like to experience. So, let’s run through some of the greatest cars that Jay Ghanem has hand picked for us today: 1.

2.

2014 Lamborghinis Gallardo: Aluminium double-wishbone front and rear suspension system, anti-roll bar, anti-dive and anti-squat, electronically controlled rear spoiler, intake and exhaust continuously variable valve timing, electronically controlled and with a speed that will turn heads. 2014 Ferrari 458 Spider: This is a hardtop convertible version of the 458 Italia coupe which offers “the wind in your face” experience along with the loud Ferrari exhaust. The V8 has 562 horsepower and a staggering 9000 rpm and 398 lb-ft of torque at 6000 rpm. It moves from 0 to 62 mph in less than 3.4 seconds.

3.

4.

5.

2014 custom Aston Martin Q Option: This is one of the rare cars that has unibody car construction. This technique is called coachbuilding and it has become a nearly extinct art, but Aston Martin is reviving the spirit of the coachbuilt car. You will be able to get a custom designed (i.e. you alter, modify or customize almost any portion of the car to your desires and specifications). Of course, this will be a pretty costly endeavor. But if money is not an object, then why not decide on every aspect of your ride? 2014 Porsche Boxster S: The Porsche has its own glory, tradition and it is a legendary car. It is the symbol of virility, youth and power. In conjunction with an intelligent lightweight construction, this arrangement delivered outstanding agility and cornering dynamics due to the fact that the weight of the car is uniformly distributed between the front and rear axles. Thus, the Boxster offers a smooth ride whether you are speeding on the Florida roads and highways or just taking a ride along the beach. This fun car runs at 315 horsepower at 6700 rpm and goes from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds. 2014 Maserati GranTurismo: Other than speed and beauty, the Maserati packs Italian exotic design and luxury style. It evokes passion and envy. The trims can be customized to your liking and with V-8 power under the hood, the 2014 Maserati GranTurismo ticks off just 4.7 seconds on the way to 60 mph. Its up to 454 horsepower of sonorous speed is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed ZF automatic transmission.

So, if you are seeking the most stunning ride, the fastest car, the most expensive or the most talked about car in South Florida, you can always get it if you are ready to spend $75-250K. Whether you are younger or older, male or female, have a dream of having an adventure whether it is in the water or watching the water from your dream car, it is all possible in the beautiful Florida Sunshine. May all your dreams come true.

HEALING POWER OF YOUR STEM CELLS John Malloy, DO, Orthopedic/Spinal Surgeon

What are stem cells? "Stem cells" refers to cells which have the unique ability to differentiate or change into other cells as needed depending on the environment they are in. These cells exist in early embryologic development and differentiate into cells necessary to perform tissues and organ systems to create a human being. The body however preserves some of the cells in their early form. These cells are then reserved by the body for later use in the event of tissue damage or injury. They then essentially become the reparative cells that allow a body to heal itself. What are the benefits in using your own stem cells? Currently, stem cells are available from two sources. They can be harvested from the embryos or placentas of other humans, which we refer to as allogeneic stem cells. The other form of stem cells are those preserved within a person's own bone marrow. These are termed autogenous stem cells. The advantages of using a patient's own stem cells are improved biocompatibility and decreased risk of disease transmission. Who is the right candidate to use their own stem cells? Stem cells are currently utilized in several ways. They may be used to aid in bone formation for spinal fusion or fracture healing. They can also be used to augment tissue healing during surgical repair or they may be used in isolation to help heal injured or damaged tissue, ligaments, muscle or bone. What kind of pain is needed in order to use stem cells? Patients often benefit from stem cell treatments for injuries such as fractures, sprains, strains and other musculoskeletal degenerative conditions such as arthritis. Many of these conditions are traditionally treated with corticosteroid injections. However stem cells, unlike cortisone, not only decrease inflammation and alleviate pain but also have the added benefit of the potential to heal and reverse the injury process. What does the procedure look like? A small needle or trocar is used to aspirate bone marrow. The stem cells are then isolated from the bone marrow using a mechanical process to separate them based on their known mass and density. Once the cells are isolated and concentrated they can be reintroduced via a small needle into the injured or affected region

requiring treatment. Many people are familiar with the term “getting a cortisone shot." The stem cell injection is similar—the difference being that the patient is not being injected with cortisone but rather their own stem cells. About Dr. John Malloy: John Malloy, DO, is board-eligible in orthopedic spine surgery and was fellowship-trained in spine disorders at John Hopkins University. He specializes in the treatment of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine degenerative conditions with an emphasis on minimallyinvasive spine surgery techniques. He completed his medical degree at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia and his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Pinnacle Health Hospital System in Harrisburg, Penn. Have you seen anything interesting while you were out? We’d love to hear about it! Drop us a line (info@pompanotoday.com) and send us a high resolution photo, and your submission could appear in a future issue of Pompano Today! Please note all submissions become the property of Pompano Media Group, LLC.

THEN: I-SPY A SCHOOL!

Pompano’s first public school opened on October 2, 1899, with nine students. At that time most settlers lived near Lettuce Lake (today's Lake Santa Barbara) and the schoolhouse was located in that area, near the present-day intersection of S.E. Fifth Street and 25th Avenue. Mary Butler served as Pompano's first teacher, for which she received $40 per month. That same year, a similarly small school was opened in Fort Lauderdale, with Ivy Cromartie serving as its first teacher. These were the first two schools in what is today Broward County.

INSIDE THE WORLD OF THE PUPPET GUY

This month, Charlotte delves into the world of puppetry, specifically the world of Jim Hammond. This age-old art is alive and well right here, and The Puppet Guy's got big plans. Read on to learn more about turning stones into hunters, bones into deer, and city managers into puppetry fans. © giadophoto - Fotolia.com

One

Story and Photo By Charlotte Sundquist

of the greatest advantages of being involved in the South Florida Arts Community has been the opportunity to meet so many unique individuals. Creative people intrigue me. There is something about their passion towards their chosen path that I seldom experience when talking to an accountant, a banker, or a lawyer. No disrespect to any of those particular professions (or any other for that matter), of course!

This month, I wanted to share an interview with my friend and colleague "The Puppet Guy" (I took the photo of his studio on Page 28). His real name is Jim Hammond, but “The Puppet Guy” has always been the best way I describe him. Other phrases that come to mind? Passionate Dog Lover. Starbucks Addict. Insomniac. Animal (the Muppet character) Lookalike. I could maybe even throw in a reference to the Tasmanian Devil, as I picture him whirling insanely around the Bunker creating stage props at 3:00 am. Let’s take a moment to learn about his world... When I planned this interview, the one thing I decided NOT to ask you was what got you interested in puppetry. I really want to know how puppetry has brought you to where you are now. I readily acknowledge Puppetry is an unusual career path for sure. Passion for and devotion to this art form has allowed me to live in a world where any object can become any character in any story. A stone can become a hunter. A bone can become a deer. A feather can become a wise storyteller communicating the mysteries of the ancients. When immersed in this perspective of the world, every day to day moment can become what you make it. That philosophy aside, Puppet Arts and Theatre Design (and an insanely busy work schedule) have brought me to a successful career in the South Florida arts scene. Over most of the last two decades, I have developed ancient winged Sumerian gods for Miami Theatre Center, talking chairs for Boca Bargoons TV ads, rebuilt the menagerie of 230 animals from Broadway's "The Lion King" and filled the streets of Fort Lauderdale with 15-foot tall skeletons for our interpretation of the Dia de los Muertos international traditions. This event started as an idea among a few artists, accompanied by a $2000 grant from Broward County. Now in its fifth year, the Florida Day of the Dead Celebration is now a month-long event from October through November 2nd in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. Last year, we had over 2500 participants in the Skeleton Processional and over 9000 at the festival on November 2nd, and we received $40,000 in funding from the Knight Foundation. Our design firm Puppet Network’s creative and financial successes have allowed our team to refocus our mission from the fabrication and design of theatre and live entertainment props, costumes and scenery into the world of creative consulting and media development over the last few months.

THE SECRET

My Unforgettable Water Adventure

N

By Jahlisa Harvey othing is more intriguing than a secret- the mystery and allure that surrounds something treasured and kept away. So let me let you all in on a little secret: tucked away on a secluded highway miles away from the main road and swirling past a mile hike of gravel and trees lay a booming cascading waterfall with a 40 foot drop from the top. We have come to label this as ‘The Waterfall’. You can see we spent a lot of time on that one. This waterfall, however, is not like any other. The water does not simply thrust itself off of the rocks and fall to the giant pool underneath as all the others do. This waterfall has surging streams of water bellowing from the tip on the flattest rock and pouring its heart into the waiting and almost anticipating base. To watch this act of nature is to feel mighty and tranquil all at once. Jumping the falls was a rite of passage when I first ventured into the wild and wonderful; now it seems almost like a part of the adventure. That first trek through the brush and stony path seemed to go on for hours and when I finally laid my eyes on it, it was instantly worth the hike. There were no words or thoughts present, simply emotion and feeling. I still remember standing at the base looking up with wonder and amazement, mouth open, palms tingling and fighting the urge (while battling some hesitation) to climb, run and lunge forward off the landing. It was a strong desire to mix and become nothing but sound with the booming echo of the water colliding with the lake. This may have been the moment that I knew I had found the right place to advance my education. Good ole Virginia.

I took a deep, petrifying breath, took two steps to the edge... and let gravity do the rest After remembering my mild fear of heights once I reached the top, I couldn’t look like a coward. I let the good kind of peer pressure allow me to do something that may have taken me a while to muster on my own. I took a deep, petrifying breath, took two steps to the edge, bent my knees, threw myself into the air and let gravity do the rest. I was free falling with no one to catch me and I couldn’t have been more at peace. Hitting the water and sinking down into the marshy pits felt great. Letting the cool, thick water wash over me and lift me gently to the surface was refreshing and exhilarating. The only down side was the tons of water I swallowed because I couldn’t keep my mouth shut from smiling so big.

These are the memories I can carry with me These are the memories I can carry with me into adulthood even after leaving the fine institution of Bluefield College. The memories you treasure the most are the ones that took the most courage, and involved the people you didn’t think would be there years later. My first trip to The Waterfall remains the most fantastic water adventure I have ever been on, and is one that will not easily be forgotten.

stars in your eyes Touré Roberts: On Living Life with Purpose

What inspired you to write a book about purpose? A couple things, I realized how widespread this question is. There are so many people from many different beliefs that are questioning what their purpose is. I wanted to connect with people across the faith lines. I experienced the way that discovering my purpose brought fulfillment and significance to my own life. I want to see that happen for others. Is your book for every type of believer? Meaning Christians and non-Christians? I think the theme of purpose is a “universal” theme. People from all walks

will be inspired. Non Christians have given me very positive feedback about the book and how it even challenged some of their thinking. I want to de-mystify Christian spirituality. It isn’t as exclusive as some people think. There is a lot in there that re-brands some of the Christian themes. Do you feel our country has enough about “religion” and purpose in it? I think that when you have billions on a planet, you have billions of perspectives and experiences? Religion will always be around. People need something greater than themselves to connect with. There is a movement trying not to use the term “religion”, and is rather focusing on spirituality. This is what I mostly identify with. You can’t ever have enough books on purpose. As long as you have people pursuing purpose you’ll never exhaust the need for books about it. Each writer will express purpose in a different way allowing various people to be enlightened on the subject. What inspires you? I like to see people made better, more whole and complete. I believe in people. I’m inspired when I see people get their life upgraded (delivered from fear, and enjoying an abundant life). What inspires me the most is seeing people’s lives enhanced by identifying with their purpose. What have you enjoyed most/least about your career? The most is seeing miracles happen, lives changed. I started the church with no members, to see it grow to multiple thousands of people has been amazing to behold. What is least enjoyable is being misunderstood

from the Christian world for my non-traditional approaches. When you don’t do it a way it has always been done it ruffles feathers. What was your favorite speaking engagement to date and why? I think the best was an engagement to empower women, believe it or not. It is pretty common to see women empowering women. It is another thing to have a man do it. It was an amazing event. I even gave a heartfelt apology for how some men don’t support women. Awesome to see the women receive my apology and become healed and empowered. Very humbling. Can we expect another book from you? I am already working on my next book now. I have to sell it to my publisher, and then hopefully release middle/end 2015. What is the best way for your fans to know what you’re working on? Facebook/Twitter? Do you post for your own sites or do you have your assistants do the posts? I manage all of my sites including Toureroberts.com; I’m very active on Facebook and Twitter. I love love love Instagram... Tell us something new, something bold that you’ve never told any other magazine… I had a few ideas: I want to encourage people to be free, I think that one of the greatest breakthroughs that has radically changed my life has been being delivered from being obsessed with the opinions of others. So many people can’t find happiness because they look constantly for approval from others. Life begins when you free yourself from the need for the next person’s approval.

Charlotte's Web, continued from Page 29 Our most recent illustrations of this include new positions developing programming on the Creative Minds Committee for the Broward County Centennial Celebration and working with the City of Fort Lauderdale City Manager's Office developing marketing and grant presentations. On the puppet video front, several projects are in production or development with various partners for new media platforms.

And where exactly are you now? It's hard for me to keep up. The life of a successful artist is often filled with many projects on a plethora of fronts - this means often working in several locations. Our main base of operations is an 8000 square foot studio on the Pride Center Campus in Wilton Manors. Most of our design and construction daily operations occur here, along with some of our community educational workshops. Our primary summer and educational location is at ArtServe, where we have two programs and venues. Now in its 2nd year, Broward ARTrepreneurs is a summer program where high school students seeking careers in the arts are trained to open their own theatre companies and funded to do so. Our NEW program, Puppet Arts Media Moguls (PAMM) gives kids ages 9-14 a chance to produce their own puppetry videos for mobile and web distribution. ArtServe has been a great partner in these educational endeavors, co-producing these programs. ARTrepreneur classes and presentations are in their auditorium, and PAMM classes will be in the ArtServe Green Screen Studio, which is currently under construction. The BEST way to stay atop our events and operations is on FaceBook at Puppet Network, Broward ARTrepreneurs, Florida Day of the Dead Celebration pages or just following Jim Hammond's Page. To hear more details, contact Jim at jim@puppet-network.com. You're familiar with the cultural development plans in the City of Pompano Beach. Do you see potential for the Puppet Network to have a presence in North Broward in the future? We have been in discussion with Pompano Beach to connect with the community on two fronts. In the short term, Puppet Network is planning to work with BaCA and other cultural institutions to bring puppetry workshops and programming to the city in the upcoming years, including Day of the Dead Mask workshops and puppet shows as early as the 2014-15 season.

looking at the large scale projects a few weeks or months down the calendar, but knowing how to break the big projects into manageable smaller pieces it important in managing the process. From a personal motivation standpoint, there are two main factors that come to mind. First, my father passed from cancer at the age of 41 when I was a child. This illustrates the brevity of life and importance to fill it with as much personal value as possible. To me, that personal value is measured by collective creativity. Second, in my personal landscape, is my relationship for the last 22 years with my spouse, Shelly. She has embraced the roller coaster of a life married to an artist and "my success" is "our success". Her support gives me the freedom every artist would cherish as an emotional impresario. This motivates me to keep pushing my own expectations of the creative work. Do you have an example of a situation when your art impacted someone in an unexpected way? In our third year during the actual Florida Day of the Dead Celebration final event, while we had thousands of folks at the venue and I was running around dealing with logistics and giant puppets, a family pulled me aside when the event was about half over. An older woman, shorter than 4'10" tall, grabbed my arm and started speaking to me in Spanish (which I'm embarrassed to say I don't yet speak). She looked into my eyes and spoke from the heart softly. From behind her, a young man in his twenties said "Do you speak Spanish?" I said no. He translated, "My grandmother wanted to thank you so much for what you have done with this event and for the Mexican community. She has not felt so much at home in Florida until tonight where you helped recreate this festival from her childhood. Thank you from our whole family for this. You are so special for doing this". His grandmother gave me a long hug and they wandered back into the crowd. Art revealed its importance at that moment.

From a long term discussion standpoint, developing and opening the Puppet Arts Center of the Americas (PACA) has been a personal goal for the better part of a decade, but we have not confirmed a specific municipal partner to date. In Pompano Beach's Cultural Arts Master Plan, PACA is slated as a prospective partner over the next decades, although we are in the early stages of discussion to develop the museum and education center.

Who is your favorite famous puppet? Tough question. Of course, being born the same year that Sesame Street launched, I have a natural allegiance to all things Jim Henson and if I were to pick a favorite Muppet it would be Animal - the wild haired drummer monster whose passion for drumming and chaos supersedes everything. If I were to name my favorite famous puppet of all time, it would probably be Yoda from the early Star Wars films. I didn't realize this until I saw the CGI version of Yoda in the more recent films, jumping around like a frenzied comical cartoon. This CGI animated version was painful to me primarily because it was lacking any humanity at all. In Frank Oz's puppet performance from the early eighties, there was a simple richness of character and movement that I still hold with me today.

Do you feel it's important to have cultural programming and events in our local communities? Culture is the lifeblood of a community. It is the spark in the eye of the child learning how to view the world; it's the rebellious thoughts of a teen rethinking the status quo; it's the hope of a middle aged worker seeking illumination; and it's the playful wisdom from a senior citizen looking to inspire. So YES! Cultural programming is imperative to make a community a cohesive community of promise.

You know I have always wanted to create a giant spider puppet, and parade it through the streets of South Florida. Will you help me with that? We have discussed this for years and 2015 will be our year for sure. This is in part because we are developing a new street festival with 3J Entertainment and the Revolution Live Entertainment Complex to produce Florida Swarm - a wild event with a giant black light insect puppet parade. Your "Charlotte Spider Puppet" MUST be a centerpiece.

Today more than ever, real-time in-person cultural events offer a piece of humanity that gets lost when we seem trapped online, in social media and on mobile devices. To go to a play, musical performance or gallery opening reveals the purest sense of what makes humans social animals - gathering together to share creativity.

And now for my last, thought-provoking question. Over the years, many creative arts have been lost. Do you think it's possible to keep future generations interested in puppets? This was a question my class of students grappled with while I was in graduate school at University of Connecticut for Puppet Arts Design in the nineties. The film Jurassic Park had hit theaters a few years prior, and it illustrated the advances of CGI technology. There was a buzz in the puppetry community that this was the "Death of Puppetry" in film and television. Amazingly enough, the deeper we advance with technology, the more audiences seem to crave the visuals and sensibility of something handcrafted like puppetry. Directors like Guillermo del Toro have returned to live action makeup and puppet/creature effects as an integral part of the look of their films in part because they just look and feel "more real".

Do you own Starbucks stock? No, but you'd be amazed how often I get asked that - Quite often by my baristas... What motivates you to keep such a crazy schedule? I'd call it "CREATIVE MADNESS". When a collaborative project inspires, when the artistic muse speaks to me personally, or even when a client commissions us to build a work at the 11th hour, I find that my brain shifts into "Production Mode" and I will do whatever it takes to get the project done on time. You could kinda say I'm addicted to my work. I'm lucky it's fun work. Having a profession in the arts can't be easy. Other than the coffee....what keeps you going? I have always had big dreams. These big dreams have developed through a series of little moments. It's easy to be overwhelmed by

Ultimately, though, puppetry shall never be lost. Every time a child picks up a toy and brings it to life over the back of a couch to tell a story for family and friends, puppetry has a future. That child's imagination is illustrated through the words of that character. Many of us who are puppeteers started as kids performing living room shows for family. And I am quite lucky to still bring characters to life as I did back then...

hen I think of adventures in business, I think of one of my favorite movies from the 90s, Adventures in Babysitting. For those of you who haven’t seen the movie, it’s a must see. It’s about a babysitter who watches four kids for one night. It sounds simple, right? The babysitter’s best friend attempted to run away from home, arrived in downtown Chicago in the middle of the night, and was terrified and wanted to come back home to the suburbs. The only problem was that the friend had no way of getting home- she was broke. So, what’s a BFF to do? That’s right! Load the kids in the car and start on her adventure in babysitting (while getting a flat, dodging gangsters and getting robbed). Now that you have a better understanding of one of my favorite movies, let’s talk about how this relates to your business. It’s simple - when you thought of the idea, signed on for the challenge, or decided to take the journey, it started out as a fun and exciting adventure. As things began unfolding, you started to realize how much work it really is, how much of a financial investment and time investment it’s going to be. So, it’s your turn to load all of the “kids” (aka business baggage) in the car and start off on the real adventure in business (aka downtown Chicago). Are all adventures in business good? Is the adventure worth it in the long run? When is the adventure going to be fun again? These are just a few of the questions that cross my mind on a daily basis. Let’s talk about the adventure: GUIDANCE When you set out on this adventure, what was the force that was guiding you through the process? Was it motivation? Was it money? Was it a job loss? Whatever it was, you made the decision to take a dive into the entrepreneurial waters and now you’re swimming, treading water or sinking. The good news is that even the most successful business owners experience the swimming phase – where everything’s great and they love the journey. Then before you know it, things take a turn. Lost

clients, unexpected money problems and employee turnover, which all equates to the treading water phase. Finally, you have reached the point where you just want to throw in the towel and you’re questioning why you made this decision in the first place, which puts you in the sinking phase. Surprisingly, all of the networking you’ve been doing pays off, and you’re back to treading water on your way to swimming again. It all happens that quickly when you are a business owner. INSPIRATION This is the pill that all entrepreneurs take. We are inspired to do it differently, to do it better or to just do it. We solve for a need and see something bigger than us. Inspiration is what keeps us moving towards our dreams and ultimately allows us to become the visionary for our brand. Our adventure should be full of inspiration – if it’s not, it won’t work. We have to be inspired to try again, to risk again and to learn again, and again, and again. Be inspired to continue this adventure and see where it takes you. It may not turn out the way you envisioned but it will all work out in the end if you are inspired to continue. SUPPORT In the beginning, the babysitter felt like she was alone. She was the one that had to think for all of the kids and get them home safely before their parents came home. But what happened during the process is that the kids started to work together as a team to get home safely and support the babysitter so she wouldn’t take the fall. Think about your support system inside and outside of your business. When things get tough like they always do- go to your support team and ask for help. Whenever I have doubts, concerns or business dilemmas, I reach out to my support team (yes, sometimes it’s my mom or my husband– but mostly it’s other business owners). You can’t do it without your support team. It makes the adventure that much easier when you have a team of people to rely on.

Who Loves Us, Baby?

This season, we're running a different kind of contest. As we all know, there are many companies doing business in Pompano Beach. What you might not know is how many of those companies give back - and give back - and give back - to our community. For this contest, we've partnered with Philanthropia and Thorson Strategic in what promises to be our best contest ever!

Let's show our local businesses that we love them back! Think about the companies you do business with - whether personally or professionally. Think about the ones who go above and beyond - we know there are many! As you may have guessed, the theme of this contest is "Who Loves Us, Baby?" And that's what we want to know. What business gets YOUR vote for "the company that loves us the most?" Drop us a line (actually, 50 words or less) telling us who in our community, in your opinion, deserves this honor. You can send us an email at info@pompanotoday.com with "Love 2014" in the subject line, or drop us a note at 3304 SE 4 Street, Suite 6, Pompano Beach, FL 33062.
