Head of School’s Message Congratulations, Seniors!
Ir
2021-2022 can be characterized as a '1I year of a slow but steady return to the i( familiar. It’s worth noting that only 1 h the II ofyou who joined Man ehvood as freshmen remember a “typical” year w ithout the intmsion and inconve li niences of the pandemic. This year, wc\ e celebrated eveiy^ step along the u w^ay as w"e embraced familiar routines like interscholastic sports. Music 1 iS on the Mountain in the dining hall, inter-dorm visitation, musical the ater, in-person school meetings, off-campus w^eekend trips, and even the return of the salad bar! As we emerged from behind masks in the spring ' term, w e re-familiarized ourselves with each other’s faces, expressions, !1 I and -perhaps best of all - the warm smiles of our friends. 4

.loin me, for a minute, in an apt digression into an area of personal pas sion: Shakespeare. Early in Hamler^ which many ofyou studied this year, Polonius sends his son Laertes back to university in France, of fering several pieces of ad\ icc. One of these is about tme friendship: “Those friends thou hast, and their adoption rtied, grapple them unto thy soul with hoops of steel.” This is pretty good advice - know" your true friends, and keep them close. The familiarity of these indhiduals is infinitely valuable, and Laertes will benefit from nurturing his true friends as they face the unknowns and challenges of college life together.

9 MARVELWOOD SCHOOL
This is a golden nugget from Polonius, but he follows it up by caution ing Laertes not to waste time looking for new friends. Now, what kind of adxicc is that? Imagine if the only friends you had were the ones you met in elementaiy school! All along the way, you have naturally sought out those who can be true to you, and to whom you can be true. At Maivelwood, you’ve discovered new friends, at least some of whom you have “grappled to your soul.” dTcy’ve helped you celebrate successes, navigate challenges, and learn about yourself and the world around you. Their familiarity has provided comfort and security. It’s therefore no surprise that your yearbook is dedicated to friendship. There is indeed comfort, safety, and security in the familiar. Each of you has benefited from your familiarity with Man^elwood’s people, places, routines, and expectations, buoyed by the support of friends, family, and caring adults. Now, as you stand poised to venture out into the world you face new, unimagined challenges. To be sure, you’ll rely on your Marx elwood friends, even if they are a far distance away. But don’t lis ten to Polonius; open yourself, as you have before, to the adventures and relationships that await you. There will be new friends to find and new “familiars” to create. Throughout your life, the memories and friends you’ve made here will jostle with new ones for a spot closest to your heart; in quiet moments, you’ll reflect on why and how they are dear to you. And when you feel the inevitable pull to return to Skifi'Mountain to familiar faces and treasured places - we’ll be waiting here to greet you and welcome you home. •)

Yearbook Dedication The “Familiar Faces” yearbook is dedicated to friendship. Yearbooks are about helping us to solidify and later reli\'e the memories of our high school years that follow us on the journeys that we are only just beginning. These memories shape our identities, fill our minds w ith stories, and embody* the entire spcctmm of emotions. One of the crucial reasons for someone’s long-last ing feelings about these years is yes, the II homew'ork loads w e suffered through It II and the teachers w^c had, but also the relationships w^c built as students and V peers. Our acquaintances, our social netw orks, and especially our personal al liances forge our understanding of other people, and are just as impoitant a goal as obtaining our diplomas.

People make the difference in our lives! On our darkest days, friends arc there sharing our pain and making the day a little brighter. On our happiest days, friends are there sharing our 5% joy and transforming the ephemeral moments into memories that last a lifetime, ddie simple knowledge that you matter to someone else, •r that there will be a friendly face in the halhvays, can be the world for US. Dur theme this year is about eelv X a® ^brating life, eelebrating joy and resilienee through sorrow', and i celebrating the people w ho brin s as one and support us through the Dther. Eaeh of us sometimes forgets about just how important the people around us are, and also how' important we are to them. We may not always be able to hug our friends, or ex en get to see them faee to faee, but we should alw ays remember the lox e we hax e for others, and the love that others have for us. Friendship ean be the most important gift that we gix e eaeh other, and aeknoxvledg, crinu: t:> that seems like the best xvav f()r us to doeument our time at Marx elxvood.
