¥ The Class of 1982 dedicates this year's PRISM to Mr. Raydon P. Ronshaugen who, with the steadfast and loving support of his wife Maye, has helped make Marvelwood a special place. We have known him as an upbeat, cheerful, friendly, and caring person who always acknowledged the good in people in spite of their mistakes. He always seemed to find time to talk or say "Hello", and his enthusiasm and sense of humor raised the spirits of the community. His wisdom and understanding gained him the respect and affection of generations of students. His years of devoted service during a distinguished career in education have enriched and given direction to the lives of hundreds of students throughout the world. On behalf of all Marvelwood students who have felt his kindness, we say, "Thank you, Mr. Ronshaugen."

To the Class of 1982: It's particularly gratifying to write in your year book. You are not only my first Marvelwood class; you have been an important and positive part of my first Marvelwood year. You've brought much more to me and to the school this year than I can acknowledge, but I'm grateful to you individ ually and as a group. I hope you remember when you think back to this year that you were called on for a special effort, and that you came through, to your and Marvel wood's credit. You leave us the better for your time here, and full of pride in all your achievements. No small amount of love and confidence will follow you in the years to come. Goodbye — good luck — sayonara! all,

Now must I these three praise What jo^ is in m^ days; one those unpassing cares. No not in these fifteen Man^/ times — troubled ¡^ears. Could ever come between Mind and delighted mind: And one because her hand had strength that could unbind IVhaf none can understand. What none can have and thrive Youths dreamy load, till she So changed me that I live Lalouring in ecstasy And what of her that took All till my youth was gone With scarce a pitying look? How could I praise that one? When day begins to break. I count my good and bad Being wakeful for her sake. Remembering what she had What eagle look still shows While up from my hearts root So great a sweetness flows I shake from head to foot . . . W.B. Yeats. .

A special thanks to Mom and Dad for making my four years at Maruelwood possible I loue you both uery much Future plans are to make a lot of money and go to College . . My four years at Maruelwood haue made me realize what an education is all about. I came to Maruelwood to get a better education, and it was more or less a second chance for me. My first two years, were hard for me to adjust to. At the closing of my second year, school ended a little short for me. That following year I was given a third chance. That's what seemed to me to be. My Junior and Senior were great. Maruelwood was fun and I enjoyed it more than I had ever realized. I learned a lot more about my education when I made a small mistake at the beginning of my senior year, now that's behind me and as the year closes. I know my self. I will miss Maruelwood and al! the friends that I’ue met along the way . . . I would like to thank all of the faculty members. Mr. Bodkin, and Mr. Tacy for all the help ouer the years . . .

The majority of this year's Junior class were returning students. With a good understanding of the school, the Junior class became very active and responsible in all aspects of school life. Along with this, the Junior class built a strong foundation for the Senior class next year. I t I

The Cross Country team completed another season with a winning record of 10-3. Following a frustrating two-loss introduction to the season (Canterbury and Mill brook, with both scores close), the team began a streak of wins against Storm King, Forman, St. Margaret-McTernan, Wooster, Watkinson, Storm King, New York Mili tary Academy, Forman and Wooster. Disrupted only by a loss to Salisbury, the season concluded with a win against St. Margaret-McTernan. A source of strength for the team lay in the Nick Benson, Peter Burke and James Wagstaff trio. In four meets they were able to capture the first, second and third positions, a sequence that automatically wins the event. Loretta A. Wardlaw, Best Wishes Class of 1982 56

4-3 Millbrook 1-4 Watkinson 0-0 Wooster 4-4 Forman 0-2 Hotchkiss JV 5-1 Watkinson Record: 2-6-4

Although this year's varsity team did not have a winning record, those who watched any of the games frequently remarked about the marked improvement of the quality of play. The defense, which played extremely well in most games, was held together by the fine play of sweeper Bram van der Vlugt, Arnheim, the Netherlands. Besides playing tough man-to-man defense, the fullbacks also cleared the ball quickly and kept it under control. In the midfield Bill Hutchings, Locust Valley, N.Y., took over at midseason and gave us more control over loose balls in the midfield. On the frontline, Buster Crabtree, McLean, VA, came in late in the season to play striker, a position he handled very well. Overall, the scores can be somewhat deceptive. While it appears that we may have played defensively quite often, this was not usually the case. Rather, it was the case that the defense was very strong (a 2 goals-against per game average); and that our young forward line was inexperienced and had difficulty capitalizing on all of our scoring opportunities. • F•

The WILDERNESS WAYS program this Fall was based upon the two fundamental concepts of learning outdoor skills and gaining self-confidence. The outdoor skills aspect of the pro gram dealt with common sense attitudes and knowledge necessary to get along in the outdoors without running into trouble. This common sense training involved firebuilding and shelter in all weather situations; the necessity of carrying extra water, food, and proper clothing at all times, as well as map and compass skills. That aspect of the course dealing with confidence building was an ongoing process through out the course that involved group interaction and individual challenges. Hypothetical situa tions involving careful thought, risk, and physical effort were almost a daily part of the program — all directed towards getting a group of twelve individuals to function as one, and simultaneously building the confidence of each member. All told, the goal of the course was to instill a degree of skill, common sense, and confidence in an individual so that he or she could feel at home and enjoy the outdoors in any situation. I feel that each individual that participated this Fall is deserving of credit for a job well done. To Beav, Beau, John, Spuds, Wally, Jenny, Casey, Hikaru, Jim, Amos, Ricky, and Albert — thank you for teaching me. Mr. & Mrs. Thomas C. Burke, The Best to the Class of 1982, Good luck the Burkes

This year's J.V. soccer team became specialists in the art of nerve wracking. Game after game, a hard driving second half followed a disorganized or lethargic first half. Unfortunately, not many games could be won by this strategy There were a number of good games, notably with Darrow, with a strong Watkinson squad, and with Berkshire. Many may think that the girls'soccer team did not have a good season because their overall record was 2-8. To first year coaches Brian Kavanaugh and Lyn Cheney, however, this was both an enjoyable and productive fall. The girls defeated two schools that previously were unbeaten in the history of Marveiwood girls'soccer. They were Berkshire and Canterbury. The Berkshire victory was all the sweeter because it happened to be the girls' first fall Parents' Day contest. There were a number of standouts on this year's squad including the team's high scorer, Ann Wurzer, New Canaan, CT. (10 goals); half back and M.V.P runner-up. Regine Greaux, St. Barthelmy, W.L, and this year's Most Valuable Player, Sarah D'Agostino, Rye, N.Y. Fortunately these three girls will all be returning as well as everyone else on the squad except Weezie Gray (fullback), Cambridge, MA., Campbell Clawson (full back), Peapack, N.J. and Angela Nicholas (wing), N.Y. City. 62

The winter was a disappointment for the Mar velwood Ski Team. Despite a great deal of talent, the members of the team were not able to defeat many of their opponents. A lack of consistency plagued the team this year. Great individual performances were not delivered, by more than one or two team mem bers at a time, and were consequently not enough to carry the day. A convergence of indi vidual peaks would have been more than enough to defeat most opponents. Graduation will cost us many talented skiers. Among them will be MVP Mark Walhimer, Dave Ramazzotti, Dave Ransom, Rick Woods, co-captain Rick Schuessler, Bryan Smith, and Rick Saba

J

j

The returning group of skiers contain an am ple supply of talentz and leadership, and should provide a solid core with which to build a suc cessful team . . .

For the fourth year in a row, the Marvelwood hockey team improved its record from that of the previous season. This year's 6-2 record was the result of a very potent offense, a good defense, and an overall optimistic team attitude. Placed by leading scorer and team MVP Jeff Leech, Providence RI; Chris Arnold, West Simsbury, CT; Corey Cannata, Danbury, CT; Rich Gordon, Hartford, CT and Will Pouch, Irvington, NY, scored more goals than any other recent Marvelwood team. Defen sively, Chris Zimmerman, Rye, NY; Trip Whiting, Winnetka, IL; and Kevin Hanifin, Suffern, NY, were a steady defensive trio, while Buster Crabtree, McLean, VA, played well in goal. The two games at the end of the season clearly represented the team's fine efforts and attitudes. Against the South Kent JV's the team came back from a one goal deficit in the third period to win by scoring the winning goal on a power play with just 17 seconds left in the game. Jeff Leech set up the goal by stealing the puck from a South Kent defenseman in the corner. While falling to the ice, Jeff passed the puck in front to Corey Cannata. Although Corey's shot was stopped by the South Kent goalie. Tripper Whiting shot the rebound over the fallen goalie into the top of the net. Against Watkinson, a team that won by a goal in January, Marvelwood's guns came through. Most of the Blue's shots seemed to find the corners and inside of the posts while Watkinson's shots were turned aside by Buster Crabtree. Jeff Leech and Chris Arnold played very well, each of them scoring four goals. While the graduation of Jeff Leech and Buster Crabtree leave some key spots open, the return of the majority of start ers should mean more good hockey in the seasons ahead. Mrs. Joseph Boden

Good luck.

With only three returning players and a foot and a half of snow on the courts, prospects for a successful ten nis season looked bleak when the team began practice in early April. Nevertheless, the team worked dili gently, under the direction of coaches Paul Gazin and Ken Keskinen, with each player striving to improve his or her skill and enjoyment of the game. That the team finished with a 1-7 record is not a true indication of its success. Throughout the season, indi vidual players formulated goals and met them, providing themselves with improved competence, confidence, and, perhaps most importantly, con sistency, of both attitude and play. Se nior David Ransom was named the Most Valuable Player of 1982 for his fine exemplification of these three ideals.

The girls' softball team finished with a record of 4-6. It was not a winning season yet the girls were happy with their performance. They knew that even when they came out on the short end of a decision that they had played hard and exhibited good sportsmanship and team play Next year's team will miss the service of starting second baseman Weezie Gray and the leadership and fine example of Campbell Clawson. Both graduate this spring. The re turning players; however, believe that the '83 season could be their banner year with eight of this years nine starters returning. The Wilderness Shop 66

The play of this year's J.V. Lacrosse team has been charac terized by tough defense. The fearsome foursome of assis tant captain )tain Chris Beaver, Chris Chr Zimmerman and Dwayne Doran, was led by second year goaltender and captain David Tucker. On offense, the team's most potent threat was high scorer Fred Boardman. He received some help from attack men Alan Johnston and Jeff Wilkins. The team was generally able to dominate faceoffs as a result of the hard-nosed play of Tripper Whiting. The second midfield of Alan Pratt, Beau French and Adam Lustbader played tenacious defense and was ferocious in their play of ground balls. As a team, the J.V.'s compiled a record of 6 wins and 4 losses, their best in recent years.

This year's lacrosse season began with 18" of snowfall that forced the team to practice in a local horsebarn, scooping lacrosse balls and other foreign objects — it ended with a 8-2 record, a big win over South Kent and an exciting overtime sudden death win over Hopkins. The victory over South Kent was the first in twelve years and the pungent odor of Mr. O'Neill's "South Kent Victory Havana Cigar" still lingers in the dining hall. In the final game of the season against Hopkins the score was tied nine different times during the game. With Marvelwood ahead with three minutes to go Hopkins tied the game and with less than two minutes remaining Hopkins went ahead; thirty seconds later Buster Crabteee tied the game with a nifty left-hand shot. With the opening face-off of sudden death overtime David Ramazzotti won the draw, scooped the ball in his patented one-handed way, fed Jeff Leech and Jeff found the net, winning the game and at the same time breaking the school scoring record. Jeff was one of the top five scorers in Western New England and was named to the Division 11 All Star Team. The season was one of the finest in Marvelwood's 25 years of lacrosse, and the team should be proud of their achievements.

White water canoeing is not lazy paddeling, nor is it "running a river". It is the art and science of manipulating the awesome power of rushing water in order that one might maneuver from rock to rock, eddie to hole, shore to haystack, downstream and upstream. As an instructor it was my job to point out where one was to put the paddle in a given situation, how to shift weight, what angle was appropriate for the canoe. But in fact, I was merely the assistant. The real teacher, the master teacher, was the river. One could not ask for a better teacher. It was always present, always correcting, ever explaining. It was capable of comforting its students and making them to feel wanted, welcome and happy, yet it set strict guide lines that had to be followed without question. It would have been unfair for the river to do otherwise; it would then not be teaching. To break the rules set by the river was to be immediately chastized, but the punishment was without malice — no grudge was ever held. The river knew its subject matter well, would tolerate only adherence to its well defined rules, and all the while, was capable of infinite patience and infinite reward. It is a master teacher. This year, the students of the river deserve a great deal of credit for all that they learned about the river, about canoeing and most importantly, about themselves.
