Marvelwood s_ academic and residential programs offer boundless opportunities for growth and enrichment. A core of deeply committed faculty and staff, many of whom have spent the better part of their careers at this School, represent Marvelwood’s most conspicuous strength. Their energy, wisdom, patience and good humor sustain our mission. At Marvelwood, students establish a solid grounding in the arts and sciences and develop the secure personal values that will equip them for life in a world of unimagined possibilities.

’/hat can be said about Mr. Cuff that everybody doesn't Eready know? We all know he's a genius in and out of ae classroom. We all know he is a care giver, a great Dok and an amazing teacher. During my three years at 'larvelwood he was more than that. He was my adviser, ny coach and my role model. More than anything he «ias my friend who never gave up on me, even when I »as ready to give up on myself. Whether he was iieaking into my room and hiding five alarm clocks alder my bed when I was having trouble getting to Jass, spending countless hours helping me with 'omework or lending me his ear when I needed someone S' listen, he always found a way to bring out the best in he. He never doubted me and never said no when 1 rade a request. Without Mr. Cuff I would have never ien able to graduate high school and the lessons he jLight me are things that I will carry with me and live by •r the rest of my life. Most people will walk in and out fyour life without having a lasting effect, but bmetimes you get lucky and meet someone like Mr. uff whose compassion for his students has the ability truly change your life. I could fill an entire notebook ith things to say about Mr. Cuff. To be honest I'm not ire words can truly describe my gratitude toward the an. To sum things up, Michael Cuff is the kind of man ho will always put other people before himself and do /erything in his power to support those who ask! Adam Ehrman- Shapiro '11

The student government of Marvelwood is able to communicate across the borders with each and every member in order to maintain a peaceful and comfortable atmosphere. We all share the same passion for the school and hope to create an even better Marvelwood.

Science Chair Laurie Doss, at Marvelwood since 1987, had been leading ecotourism trips to Central and South America since the 199O's to remote locations in Brazil, Costa Rica, Belize and Panama. She wanted to identify an area to which the school could return consistently to do meaningful scientific research so that the data generated would have an impact long-term. Marvelwood is the only high school based in the United States to have established a MoSI ( Monitoreo de Sobrevivencia Invernal) Bird Banding Station in conjunction with the Institute for Bird Populations in the tropics. Each year Marvelwood partners with Conservation through Research Education and Action (CREA), a Panamanian NGO.

"ESL is a fun class. We meet two periods a day and have lots of fun learning English. We learn lots of vocabulary but students would say that the games and the speaking are the best parts of class. I LOVE teaching ESL and being with my kids for so much time. -Ms. Love

Marvelwood's ESL program is committed to developing the non-native English speaker's oral and written communication skills, which are essential to their successful integration into both the academic realm and life on a boarding school campus. Our program facilitates appropriate placement for students with different degrees of English proficiency.

Marvelwood's English teachers like to mix things up by peppering traditional collegeprep literature study with creative, non-traditional alternatives. Students write personal, critical, and analytical essays, but they also put controversial characters on trial for their actions, reenact the .final swordfight from Hamlet, compare their own ideas of utopia to those envisioned by authors decades before, summarize Dickens in rap songs, and relate modern literature to classic film.

Foreign Language- French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese In some sense, Foreign Language is an ideally interdisciplinary subject, as games, audiovisual activities, songs, food, history, geography, literature, art and cultural studies are all fundamental elements of the curriculum and allow for a variety of teaching methodologies. Students at all levels enjoy both feature films as well as training videos and computer-based review in the target language. They learn basic ’ geography and relevant history and discuss cultural differences.

At Marvelwood, we are committed to

the belief that eve^ student learns differently, and that these differences are to be appreciated and accommodated through a combination of intensively targeted efforts on the part of the faculty to make even the most challenging college preparatory curricula accessible to students of all abilities, talents, interests and learning styles. Students at every level of ability are encouraged to participate actively in their studies, practice self-advocacy, and accept guidance from the professionals with whom they interact every day.
