How do Marvelwood School and the Class of 2011 honor a man like Dr. Walter Kane? A man who attended Stanford University and the University of Washington before graduating from Harvard University with a Ph.D; a man who fought forest fires for the United States Forest Service, was an active nuclear physicist, and was a part of the US Government's Nonproliferation and National Security team which helped to develop nuclear safeguards and arms-control? As if these " accomplishments are not enough, Dr. Kane is also a true Renaissance * man! For those of you who might not be familiar with this term, the Free Dictionary.com defines a "Renaissance Man” as “A man who has broad intellectual interests and is accomplished in areas of both the arts and the sciences.” This is also Dr. Kane: a man infatuated with languages from Gallic to Russian;

* *

during his tenure at our little school on the mountain. Thus, the class of 2011 thanks Dr. Kane for the gift of knowledge. We thank him for broadening our horizons, from timberdoodles and maple syrup to nuclear energy and Russian history. He has reminded us that learning truly Is a life-long endeavor and that the keys to success and happiness in life are as simple as just getting out of bed each morning, greeting the sunrise with a smile, and Despite Dr. Kane’s amazing career and asking one basic question; "What can accomplishments, it is perhaps his third I learn today?" career at Marvelwood School that has been the most challenging and the most - Laurie Doss rewarding for him. It is at Marvelwood where he really became his father’s son and conveyed the knowledge he had acquired along life’s journey to others, It is Dr. Kane’s passion, persistence, positivity, intelligence, compassion. humor, dedication and zest for life that will stay with everyone he has touched an accomplished dancer whose love of music and movement has entertained many at Marvelwood, and a man who cooks a mean pancake laced with maple syrup (which, of course, he makes himself): and a man whose command of the English language has sent both students and faculty to the library reaching for dictionaries to try and understand the wisdom he has just conveyed to them (usually in the form of a story or joke).

Headmaster’s message J

•.S*'/I

• I T6 I

Dear Class of 2011,

Thank you for the memories! I will always remember the Class of 2011, not only because you’re my last as Headmaster, but for being the largest graduating class in the history of the school, and for the significant contributions you have made to the school, academically, athletically and in the arts.

I

Ik

To each of you CONGRATULATIONS! You made it!! To the fouryear seniors Toby, Andrew, Connor, Josiah, Nick, Nixa, Michael, Kassandra, Evan, HoJin (Vanlencia), Chia-Ming (Justin), MengHan (Jacky), Ben, Alex, Anthony and Chase, it seems like just yesterday that you were 9th graders. Looking back at your freshman class photo, it is a reminder of how far you have come. Here’s to you!

I speak for the entire Marvelwood faculty when I say that we wish the Class of 2011 the best of everything. You take with you an experience which will carry you far. Marvelwood would like to thank Scott Pottbecker for six amazing years! One of the highlights of my Marvlewood career was the trip I took to Las Vegas with Scott. I just assumed we would hop in a taxi from the airport and head to the hotel. I had done no research whatsoever on the city and was only vaguely aware it was in the middle of a- desert, but totally unaware it was two hours from any airport. Scott was the perfect gentleman. When we landed at 1:00 am, he stood in line, rented the car. and found the hotel. Naturally I did not bother with anything as pedestrian as a map. If I had been driving, we would still be looking. Thank you, Scott. -Katherine Almquist He put his heart and soul into this great place each and every day. - Brian Hastings

I can not think of any other faculty who literally knows everything about our school. It would not surprise me in the least if Scott could build a new school with his own bare hands, teach all the classes, cook all the meals, coach all the sports, maintain the grounds and still have time to offer advice to those of us who have learned so much from him already. He will be missed. - Dennis White

I

Scott is a great friend to all of us. He has nurtured this little schoofi into the proud place we live and work in today. He will be severely^

missed, but the mark he leaves is forever. - Misty Jordan

-

I was considering leaving Marvelwood prior to Scott’s arrival, due loa the fact that I felt I was not being utilized uuiiuuiiy correctly aiiu and wais was iiui not uivuivcu involved 1 » 1 in ways that I felt were important. When Scott started as Head, he I immediately met with me and reinforced my belief in myself personally :j and professionally. The past six years have been some of the most « rewarding years that I have ever had due to Scott’s leadership and his ‘ , ability to recognize what I had to offer. I cannot thank him enough as . ; a Head and friend for the opportunities he has given me. Scott, I wish i you the best and know that you contributed a great deal to Marvelwood * ; tiiv laui mat i icii i vvaz> iiui uciny

in the years that you led the school. - John Kennedy

Who knew that Scott is one of the best diplomats our country has to offer the world? While traveling in Korea, China and elsewhere, Scott single-handedly puts the foreign service corps to shame. Whether' " taking pictures for tourists, helping someone lift a heavy bag into the overhead compartment of an airplane, aiding an elderly person across > a street, Scott Pottbecker is the new model for Americans traveling j abroad in the post-George Bush era. - Glenn Schwitter 1 I

I

The first time I had a chance to get to know Scott a little was a few months after he started here. He asked me to accompany him to a car dealership halfway across the state to pick up three new Astros. Actually, they were new-used, but it didn’t matter. After transporting students around in old wrecks for years, shiny white Astros looked j like limousines. I remember the way the dealer treated Scott with 4i, respect. I remember thinking: “Hey, this guy knows what he’s doing. The school is in good hands. “ And I was right. - William Bingham

I I

.[

I I I 1

.

I will always remember how cheerful Scott was. He always had a smile and a “Hello Miss/Mr. (insert name here)." It just made my day brighter. - Ftobbyn Ellis

Scott has worked miracles for school spirit. I often thought all that gung-ho stuff was trivial, but it has made a huge difference in the way the students see their school. He invented Spirit Day! Amanda DeMaria

I will miss Scott next year. He was always fair, logical and easy for me to talk with. He is a smart guy and always knew what I was coming to him for. The best part was that Scott understood and knew how important the Strategies Department is for the school. He knew what we do and why we do it, and he was supportive of us. I wish him the very best of luck in his new endeavors. SueEllen Bohning Scott, Marvelwood is a better school because of you. During your tenure as Headmaster, our school has reached new levels in technology, facilities, faculty and student body. Congratulations! Best wishes to you and Amy and Kayla. Colin, Taylor and Sage. - Trisha Barry

What comes to mind is when, over the years, I have had a student who was an advisee of Scott's, he was always very understanding and helpful with my questions/concerns. i.e.,me - "Hi Scott" Scott - "How's my 'son'doing, Marion?" and whatever I told him, he was on top of the situation, pronto. - Marion Smith

The entire school, and I waited seven years for the completion of the new gymnasium, and Scott sa w the project through to the end. The facility is one of the very best, and it has changed my life here for the better in innumerable ways. I am forever grateful. - Glenn Sanchez

It was a moment right before my first interview at Marv when I had locked myself out of my overnight apartment and thought..."Bummer, I've got to bother the Head of the School the night before the interview...ugh..." But I walked over to Scott and Amy's, a complete stranger, and apologized for locking myself out-. He introduced me to his family and we sat at the kitchen table for an hour or so getting to know each other... it was the precursor to getting a feel for the chilled vibe that continues to make Marv unique.... - Mick Barens I first spent time with Scott when he was going through the interview process. He drove up to campus in a snowplow during a blizzard and spent the night with me on duty in front of the roaring Lake Dorm fireplace. As the snow piled higher against the sliding glass doors overlooking the pond, you could tell Scott was beginning to like the place. - Mike Augusta

Scott loved our sports and always he did root, A leader who supports and shows the way. We should have got him in the mascot suit, Creating 'Pack the Gym’ and 'Spirit Day'. -Dana Mason

Scott, thank you for all you have done on our ten-year journey. - Ed Banach

ôenîor Orientation Senior Leadership Orientation 2010 was a huge achievement for the largest senior class in Marvelwood history. With the help of thirteen faculty volunteers, we took to the low elements course with gusto and vigor. Next, we were off for a night of camping. It was nice to see many people who normally don't hang out getting to know one another. The next day was triumphant at three different high element courses around the state. Great struggles and personal victories were the high points of the trip. It is always interesting to see just how glad people were to return to Marvelwood, tired and a little smelly. To the class of 2011 thanks for a great year. Sx a * -1'. 9 Ç^;’*a

Marvelwood’s Thirds Soccer team was revived this year after previously n being a recreational team. As with any new program, we faced the challenges of playing far larger and considerably more experienced ! teams. Senior Captains, Anthony 1 Troy and Chase Yarnell, helped to inspire their team to come together. The team eventually showed great ; improvement as the season progressed.

Marvelwood’s community service program has been one of the most beneficial activities of my high school career. As a transfer student from a public high school, I had never had the opportunity to volunteer to help others before and didn't know where to begin. I just knew I was tired of doing my normal after school sports and clubs and feeling like I wasn’t making a difference. But at Marvelwood, where community service is an integral part of the weekly schedule, I felt a part of something greater than myself. And I actually had fun, too. Even though I never stuck with one activity - I've tried knitting for pre-mature babies, assisting at a daycare, writing for the school newspaper and working at the local Audubon - I know that the different opportunities gave me an even greater sense of accomplishment, and a reason to feel good about myself. I will definitely continue to volunteer my time in college and for the rest of my life, thanks to Marvelwood. - Lizzy Hackney, '11

Community service means a lot to this school and to the people who benefit by it. Even some of the little things, like helping to clear a field of brush or setting up chairs as a group means so much to others. Many activities would be impossible to do without our help. Marvelwood's community service program affects many lives throughout Kent and the surrounding areas. It's just a good feeling to be a part of something helpful and so important to people that are less fortunate than yourself. - Chris Tsien, '11

Evan: Best roommate ever, Period. Thanks for being that guy that successfully put up with me for for three of my years at Marvelwood. Mr. Hastings: My advisor at the start of it all. You paved the way for who I am today and helped me with the craziest time I had at Marvelwood. Mr. Walton: My Advisor for the end of my time at Marvelwood. You helped take up what Mr. Hastings started and turn me into who 1 am today.

Ms. Ellis: Just what I needed to get through until Collage, the best Strategies teacher ever Thank you for putting up with my bad study habits and helping me push through all of my work. Mr. J: Senior Donkey

Everyone Else....You know who you are: This is mostly for the friends that helped me get through the tough times, the people that made my life at Marvelwood that much better. You know who you are. This is also to thank the teachers that I have had over the years, from great times to fights in classes. In closing, Byeee Mason.

We are only human I’ve realized that during my time at the Marvelwood School, I have not always been an angel or really the best at anything. I am only human. I make mistakes, and I have issues in my life. No one is perfect. Ihere are people who accepted me even though I had issues. Ms. Doss was one of those people. TTie first time I met her, I was on a tour with Ellie and Devin, two students who have already graduated. I knew the moment we met that we would have a good relationship. As time went on, we got to know each other, and she let me into her apartment to have talks and cook. Ms. Doss really helped me through those hard times, and I can’t thank her enough for taking me under her wing. As time went on, she in troduced me to multiple people, and in my junior year she introduced to my first girlfriend, Catherine. Catherine, Ms. Doss, and I learned so much together and had so many adventures along our way. We cried. We laughed. We got mad at each other, but in the end, it all turned out ok and we enjoyed each other’s company. Catherine was really a joy in my life and I really do miss her. She showed me the true meaning of love and what it meant to have it. She will always be in my heart no matter where I go. I will never forget her and how much she meant to me, but now I am a senior and I feel ready to finish the year strong and move on to col lege. Then, there was Mr. Hastings. Yes, he is full of himself, and yes, he might be a little crazy at times. He was like an older brother to me though. He watched out for me and made sure I was ok and had all my work done for all my classes. He always had my back when needed, and we laughed and always had a good old time when eating at our advisee table. He knew how I felt most of the time and did some crazy things with me, in cluding running in knee high snow. He also knew when I just to take a walk and talk things out with him. Words can’t describe how much I learned from the people I met and the friends I made. I will be sad when I leave. I know I will have a few tears because Marvelwood has done wonders for me, and if I didn’t have the support of everyone at Marvelwood, I don’t know where I would be or what state 1 would even be in. Thank you Marvelwood for all that you done. I hope to see you in the near future. I am off to a whole new world filled with a lot of new ideas, and now I am ready.

Connor Bachmann Hi, my name is Connor Bachmann ■ ■■ I’m obsessed with steam engines, blacksmithing, and ecology, an odd mix. Anyways, I’d like to get to the point. I started going to Marvelwood in the summer of 2007; I was going to summer school in order to boost my algebra 1 grade. I decided to go for a full high school education after that, I entered my freshman year awkward and with out any acquaintances in the school. I did however find many people who helped me along my way.

My sophomore and junior years were highly uneventful with the exception of the Panama trips which I have attended every year. I love these trips and enjoy doing work with Miss Doss, Dr. Michael Roy, and the various students that come along with us. Mike Esposito and I are the only four year attend ees of this trip. I love this trip and would like to thank all of the good people at CREA.

I have had a difficult four years at marvelwood, as everyone does, I would like to thank many people for helping me through the tough times: Andrew Aldrich, Ben O'Connell, Michelle Howard, Bimala Carijones, Catherine Zhang, John Watros, Thomas Samuels, Dr. Michael Roy, Dr. Kennedy, John Russell, Craig Ough, Laurie Doss, Alex Vincent, Aaron Zweig, Mick Barrens, Dana Mason, Mike Augusta, Marian Smith, Heni Foot, and of course. Sunny Kneissl.

I am supposed to add a picture of myself so here's a picture of me with my favorite anvil
