SWARBRICK

SEE YOU ON THE ROAD I’m in disbelief that another year is almost over; it seems like just yesterday I was talking about all the things I wanted to accomplish this year. I put a pretty good dent in that list. How time flies when you’re having fun and working hard. Fortunately I can look back on 2015 with a fond reflection, not regret. Life is good, my kids are beautiful. As life would have it, no one knows what the future has in store for us, we choose our path and off we go. We are all embarking on a new year, with endless possibilities, opportunities and hopefully starting out with a good dose of enthusiasm. 2016 here we come! Let’s try to remember some of those life lessons we’ve learned along the way, recall a few of those gems of wisdom that have been bestowed upon us over the years. Let’s dig into this new year with energy, vigor and hope! Life is good, keep it simple, and keep it real. Love those in your life that are there with you and for you, enjoy each day as if it was your last. Make your mark on your endeavors, be remembered for the impact you made on those you crossed paths with. Hug your kids, sing like no one is listening, get outside and enjoy nature. Try something new; explore something you’ve always been curious about. There are no age restrictions on enthusiasm and adventure. Live large – this doesn’t require money or assets, just an attitude and a state of mind that says, I can do this, I want to do this! I went on some spectacular motorcycle rides this year and I have to share my thoughts on this – it is virtually impossible to be in a bad mood while riding and enjoying the incredible, indescribable sights, sounds and smells of nature. I would assume the same holds true for any type of riding, hiking, paddling etc. To put this in perspective, we live where people from all over come to vacation – think about that. I guess what I’m saying is, don’t dwell on the past, it’s gone, don’t worry about the future, it tends to work itself out. Enjoy the here and now and if at all possible, spend as much time as you can outside. You will be a better, happier, healthier more balanced person for it! See you on the road, lake, trail ……

DIVERSITY MAKES US WHO WE ARE It’s always uplifting to look around your community and see good things happening! Rutland is home to thousands of exceptional, giving, charitable people. This may come from our humble working class roots, our long history. Rutland was founded by hard working farmers, orchardists, and business men, families whose Rutland roots can be traced back as far as 1902. With social media, it’s easier to get a feel for the pulse of your community, to keep up with what’s being said about current events and how people and organizations are feeling about various topics, then it was in the past. Following the Syrian refuge crisis on social media brings together world news and peoples perspective on the events being reported on. Rutland , like most other communities in Canada, has a lot of diversity of nationalities, languages, faiths and beliefs. Diversity is after all, what makes us who we are; unfortunately it can at times bring problems. Our community rarely sees this type of conflict. However; some disturbing stories have made the rounds on the news as well as Facebook and such. Stories about intolerance, racism, fear mongering and even violent attacks. Is our community immune from this or is Rutland bracing for the onslaught of Syrian and Iraqi refugees? Will all form of economic and religious problems ensue? Are we prepared for these terrorists, criminals and job stealing rapists that will tax our medical system and steal government funds right out of our pockets? These unwelcomed guests that will be receiving more government assistance than our senior citizens will? Why are these hate mongering, dangerous untruths being repeated on our so called news channels? It would be a lie to say we haven’t all seen the Facebook posts daring us to share these posts if we feel Canada needs to help Canadians first, end homelessness at home first etc. We’ve seen them, read them, but did we share them? Quite the opposite, they are being deleted not passed on and the posters shamed. The amount of talk out there about this crisis and the desperate situation of the refugees is incredible. It’s in the hearts and on the minds of everyone in this community. Conversations about their plight are at the forefront of gatherings within our community organizations, churches, businesses and around the dinner tables in our homes. These are not the conversations that we see on foreign news outlets, these are real people asking how can we help. How many families can we bring into Kelowna, how many children can we save? What can we as a people do to get these people out of harm’s way? Rutland may not be the most affluent community but we clearly have the biggest hearts and strength of character second to none. To quote Anne Frank - no one has ever became poor by giving. As Always - Rutland Proud!

A DAY OF REFLECTION AND RENEWED HOPE This spectacular Okanagan fall day was a melting pot of renewed patriotism, pride and hope. There was no one factor that resulted in this, it wasn’t just the weather, the people, the events of late; it was a culmination of many things both good and bad. Tragedy is all around these days, turn on the news and you are besieged with stories and images of death and destruction. Parts of our world are living through horrors we here in Canada cannot imagine. Turning on the TV to see pictures of toddlers lying on the beach, their lives over, is almost too much to bear. So why are we smiling? It’s a day of tradition observed every year by my family and friends, not a celebration by the definition of the word, but an event we enjoy just the same. A day off from work and school much needed time spent together as family and friends. A day of social interaction catching up with each other, food, hugs, and laughter. This year was different …. Even Mother Nature felt it. No bone chilling gales off the lake, no morose grey skies. It was November 11th, 2015 Remembrance Day, an exceptional day on many levels. The sun warm on the faces of the larger than normal crowd, golden leaves rustling in the breeze, drifting down around us, almost surreal, picturesque. The sounds of the pipers carried through the air on the winds of change. The traditional crowds were different, not just the size, but the attitudes. Remembrance Day is generally a very somber event and while there was the traditional ceremony, reflection, speeches and moment of silence there was an undeniable air of hope and optimism. All in attendance marked the event with the dignity and respect that it rightfully deserves, we spoke of the struggles our families faced in the past, the lives that were lost to protect our freedoms. The horrors of war that we must never forget, but this crowd was uncharacteristically happy.

This new wave of war and horror has once again, opened our eyes to just how lucky we are to live in this great country. It has renewed in most of us, what our values must be to continue to be what defines us as Canadian. We are a peaceful giving nation, full of decent hard working, charitable people. There has been a lot of concern regarding the state and role of our military. Concern that we have strayed too far from our values. Has our decision to choose a new government played a role in our renewed sense of worth as a Country? There does seem to be an unmistakable wave of pride sweeping this nation. The outpouring of love and support from all levels of Government and citizens alike, for the incoming refugees is truly Canadian! We are garnering global attention for our ability to welcome the refugees to their new country in such a sincere and loving manner. Talk around the family table has turned from bitching about our secretive, untrustworthy government representatives to our bright new leaders, new policies, and renewed values. We find ourselves wondering how we can do more to help, to improve Canada and implement change abroad. Our true Canadian roots, our diversity, our values and class are shining through brighter than ever! Look at our actions through the eyes of a refugee and you will know why we are smiling. Sometimes we must look to the past to see our future …..

CIOPPINO An incredible flavorful shellfish stew for when you’ve just had enough of Turkey! This dish is one of my favourites and it’s so easy to make, your guests (if you share), will think you are a rock star in the kitchen! Ingredients: – this is a small batch – double if you are cooking for more than 2 or 3. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 large onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes – I use more to spice it up 1/2 bay leaf 1 cup dry white wine for the recipe – 2 cups for the cook – Sauvignon Blanc works well 1 (14 ounce) can diced tomatoes with juice 1 cup clam juice or fish stock Salt and ground black pepper to taste 6 mussels, scrubbed and debearded 6 clams, scrubbed 1 (4 ounce) fillet halibut - cut into 2-inch pieces 10 small scallops 3 crab legs, cracked 6 tail-on shrimp 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Directions: Heat olive oil in a heavy large Dutch oven or large pot over medium-high heat; cook and stir onion until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic to onion; cook until garlic is fragrant, about 2 minutes. Stir 1/4 cup parsley, basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, and bay leaf into onion mixture; cook and stir until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add wine to seasoned onion mixture; bring to a boil. Cook and stir mixture until most of liquid evaporates, about 10 minutes. Pour tomatoes with juice and clam/fish stock into seasoned onion-wine mixture; simmer until flavors blend, about 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Stir mussels and crab legs into tomato mixture; cover Dutch oven with a lid and simmer for about 2 minutes. Add clams to mixture; simmer about 2 more minutes. Add halibut, scallops, and shrimp to mussels-clams mixture; cover Dutch oven and simmer until mussels and clams break open and halibut and scallops are cooked through, about 2 more minutes. Always discard any mussels or clams that don’t open. Divide cioppino among serving bowls; sprinkle with 2 tablespoons parsley. Serve with crusty bread – I like serving parmesan cheese toasts with Cioppino.

Cioppino is one of those versatile dishes that pairs well with red or white; however; just like its French cousin bouillabaisse, it is best served with a dry Rosé and the French know their wine. Thankfully our misconceptions of Rosé are finally being debunked. A quality Rosé is exceptional with or without food.

There are several wineries in the Okanagan that make a great Rosé and we have listed a few to make your selection just a little easier. Sandhill 2012 Rosé, Quails’ Gate 2013 Rosé, JoieFarm 2013 Rosé, Tinhorn Creek 2013 Oldfield Series, 2 Bench Rosé, I Love Rutland │ WINTER 2015 11

SHORTBREAD THUMBPRINT COOKIES I love this cookie..My Mom made this exact recipe every Christmas...but..she rolled them into balls and then rolled the balls in crushed walnuts..then thumbprinted them then filled them with jam... Ingredients: • • • • •

1 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup white sugar 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1/2 cup any flavor fruit jam – I use raspberry Chopped/crushed walnuts – optional – chop finelyand roll balls in walnuts

Directions: Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add sifted flour, and mix well. Shape dough into 1-inch balls and place on cookie sheets. Imprint your thumb in the center to make a 1/2-inch indentation – the end of a wooden spoon handle works too. Fill with your favorite jam – or experiment! Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown at the edges.- watch closely – I don’t usually bake mine this long If you use unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt to the cookie dough

CHOCOLATE FUDGE Ingredients: • 2 3/4 cups sugar • 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate • 3 tablespoons butter, plus more for greasing pan • 1 cup half-and-half • 1 tablespoon corn syrup • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract • 1 cup chopped, roasted nuts, optional – walnuts are always good Directions: Grease an 8 by 8-inch pan with butter. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the sugar, chocolate, 1 1/2 tablespoons of the butter, half-and-half, and corn syrup. Over medium heat, stir with a wooden spoon until sugar is dissolved and chocolate is melted. Increase heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to mediumlow, cover, and boil for 3 minutes. Remove the cover and attach a candy thermometer to the pot. Cook until the thermometer reads 234 degrees F. Remove from the heat and add the remaining butter. Do not stir. Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes or until it drops to 130 degrees F. Add vanilla and nuts, if desired, and mix until well-blended and the shiny texture becomes matte. Pour into the prepared pan. Let sit in cool dry area until firm. Cut into 1-inch pieces and store in an airtight container for up to a week. 12 WINTER 2015 │ www.iloverutland.com

THE NEW YEARS RESOLUTION Its that time of year again, a time when everyone plans to use the new year as a landmark to eat healthier, exercise more, lose weight, the list is endless. Studies show this resolve starts to waver in the third week of January. This pattern shows how difficult it is to make a new habit stick, its said that it takes about 66 days to form a habit. Lets make a commitment to stick to our resolutions for a minimum of 66 days and see what happens. Setting a specific goal is more effective than vague vows to get healthier. A new habit should be realistic enough to be reachable but challenging enough to be worthwhile. Many people fail their resolution not because of their dedication but because of their surroundings. 1. Make your home temptation free – Cook all your healthy meals at once to last you for the week, when you have plenty of healthy food in the fridge, you

have to eat them before they go bad. Toss out the junk food, it forces you to eat healthy. It no longer becomes a question of weather you re going to have a banana or those chocolate cookies. The decision is weather you are going to eat a banana or nothing at all. 2. Delegate Discipline – A common mistake is that people leave it up to themselves to have the discipline to succeed. This can be solved in different ways depending on your lifestyle. Leave the discipline to someone else such as committing to a twice a week fitness class or hiring someone you are accountable to. Sometimes when the money is spent that is motivation enough. If that doesn’t work for you, get an accountability buddy. Delegate your discipline to a friend of

OUR GOAL IS TO GIVE YOU RESULTS TODAY, RESULTS 4 LIFE

yours that is going to make sure you are actively making progress on your goals. 3. Surround yourself with the right people – Take a hard look at the people you interact with on a daily basis. Ever had that friend who always puts you down when you tell them about your big goal? Those may be the people in your life that get jealous for you wanting to do something that they have given up on. Find a group of ambitious friends and support each other. 4. Don’t be afraid to fail – To achieve your personal best, to make the impossible possible, you can’t fear failure, you must think big and you have to push yourself. When the rewards of success are great, embracing possible failure is key to taking on a variety of challenges. Remembers not to be afraid to step outside you comfort zone. Results 4 Life Fitness would love to help you succeed not only in the first 66 days but for the rest of the year and help you achieve results for life. You can delegate the discipline to us with personal training, partner training or join one of many grouptraining classes. Visit our website at www.results4lifefitness.com for class schedule or like our facebook page for nutrition info, weekly workout challenge or fitness tips of all kinds.

I made the mistake of my life, and I want it fixed! I’m 27, and after six months of being showered with attention, sexy messages, and dinners, during which I was constantly told how beautiful I was, I gave in and slept with my boss (a 50-year-old charmer who all the girls in the company are absolutely crazy about, and he chose me!). But since then, he’s been avoiding me. It’s very uncomfortable. I love my job and I want to stay, but I feel like a fool! Should I tell him that his attitude hurts me? —Totally Lost It HE SAID Ahk! Banging the boss was bad, but blubbering to the geezer about his “attitude” apropos the bam-bam...will bury your career. Instead, here’s your plan: •

Work like a banshee.

Become his boss.

Make him feel uncomfortable.

Also, in case he starts to freeze you out, deny promotions, or pass you up for special projects, keep a log of your interactions with him should you need to consider transferring out of the division, slapping him with a lawsuit, and so on. Meanwhile, to remove the dark heart of postcoital pestilence you both created, seize the next moment you’re alone with him, smile, and say archly, “Mr. Humpy [or whatever his fatuous name is], we enjoyed an electrifying night. One that will live

in infamy. I’m glad we’ve both put it behind us and are moving Smockster Inc. [or whatever your beloved company is called] toward its glorious future.” SHE SAID Somethings just can’t be “fixed”, I must say, to think this was going to go any way other than this was rather naive on your part. I could see it from a 19 year old but by 27, unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last decade, you should have known better. How do you see this conversation going? Excuse me Mr. boss man – since we did the dirty you’ve been ignoring me at work and it hurts my feeling?? Clearly he is a player and was only looking to get some, unfortunately you didn’t figure that out. You have options though - get over it, forget about it and get back to work. It won’t be easy, you will feel foolish at times, your hurt feelings won’t magically disappear, but they will diminish over time. You’ll still have your job but it will never be the same and you’ll get a front row seat to his behavior and the next version of you. Can you live with that? Unfortunately it sounds like you have developed feelings for him and they are not being reciprocated. You may want to look at this as one of those life lessons you just couldn’t predict. Best move - Start looking for a new job and put this nasty event in your past.

TAX UPDATE FOR THE 2015 YEAR Note to Business Owners – be proactive not reactive! Don’t wait until your year-end has past to meet with your accountant. Your options for tax planning are very limited after your year-end is up.

proposed to be increased to $8,000 from $6,022 and indexed annually for inflation. The amount available for those living in the intermediate zone will increase to $4,000 from $3,011.

With a new Liberal Government there have been some proposed changes to finance and our tax system. Below is a summary of the changes as laid out in the Liberal party platform:

Home Buyers Plan – Flexibility to be increased for those that have experienced sudden and significant life changes (i.e. job relocation, death of a spouse, marital breakdown etc.).

PERSONAL TAX Personal Tax Rates – The federal personal tax rate in the 2nd bracket, (approx. $45,000 to $90,000) will be reduced from 22% to 20.5%. A fourth tax bracket will be introduced to start at $200,000 with a tax rate of 33%, 4% higher than the highest bracket at present. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has indicated that his first order of business is to pass these rate changes. Family Tax Cut – This credit, introduced last year, will be eliminated. Contrary to the misinformation the Conservative party was alluding to during the campaign – the Pension split tax credit will remain. Canada Child Benefit – The Universal Child Care Tax Benefit, National Child Supplement and Child Tax Benefit will be rolled into this new benefit. A base amount of $6,400 per child under 6 and $5,400 per child aged 6 to 17 will be paid. The payments will be reduced based on a percentage of family income level. No reduction will occur for income below $30,000. Amounts will be nontaxable. Per the Liberal campaign materials, the break-even point compared to the previous regime is family income of $150,000. (i.e. Families under $150,000 should fare better under the Liberal platform and vice-versa.) The Benefit will be fully eroded at approximately $200,000; however, this will vary depending on the number and ages of children. TFSA – the annual contribution limit will revert to the $5,500 level in 2016 CPP Benefits – Increases to benefits are being contemplated. EI Premiums – To be reduced from $1.88 to $1.65 per $100 by 2017. Increased availability and flexibility to be introduced. RRIF – The reduction to the minimum withdrawal rates to be maintained in accordance with the 2015 budget. Teacher and Early Childhood Educator School Supply Tax Credit – This proposed refundable credit is planned to be effective for t2015. The credit is to be valued at a maximum of $1000 x 15% = $150. It is uncertain whether receipts would be required or not. Guaranteed Income Supplement – The supplement is proposed to be increased by 10% for single, low income seniors. Northern Residents’ Deduction – The deduction is 20 WINTER 2015 │ www.iloverutland.com

Deduction for Stock Options – Consideration has been given to a cap on the 50% deduction; however, the $100,000 annually would still qualify. Labour-Sponsored Venture Capital Corporation Tax Credit – To be reinstated. Under the Harper Government this Credit was scheduled to be phased out by 2017. Education and Textbook Credits – To be cancelled in favour of increasing student grants. The Tuition Credit will remain. This is a very unpopular change! CORPORATE TAX Small Business Corporate Tax Rates – The decrease to the small business tax rate from 11% in 2015 in stages to 9% in January 1, 2019 will proceed as proposed in the 2015 Federal budget Small Business Deduction Eligibility – “We will ensure that Canadian-Controlled Private Corporation (CCPC) status is not used to reduce personal income tax obligation for high-income earners rather than supporting small businesses.” The Liberal government has also made the additional comments – “We will make the Canada Revenue Agency fairer, more helpful and easier to use.” – Canadians need to do the their part and hold the Liberals to this promise, the CRA and their systems have become increasingly less user friendly and very complicated for many people, seniors in particular. “We will also invest an additional $80 million, over four years, to help the Canada Revenue Agency crack down on tax evaders.” So those of you that haven’t filed in a few years or are under reporting your income – may want to set up a meeting with your accountant and have a frank discussion. It sounds like CRA will be getting some new resources to utilize. “Modernize the rules governing the charitable and notfor profit sectors”. This is one of those areas that has been ignored for too long and CRA will be implementing new policies and enforcing existing rules governing these sectors. “We will conduct a review of all tax expenditures to target tax loopholes that particularly benefit Canada’s top one percent.” “Removing all GST on new capital investments in affordable rental housing”.

MANAGING MARKET VOLATILITY Why planning matters While there’s no guaranteed way to completely protect your investments from the ups and downs of the market, you can moderate the impact of market downturns by putting a plan in place that considers your: •

long-term goals,

comfort level with investing, and

tolerance for risk.

By discussing your concerns, we can ensure your investment plan aligns with your long-term goals and isn’t impacted by short-term decisions based on fear. Managing the highs and lows

A decade ago, you could have bought 100 shares of Disney for around $2,200. Today, those shares would be worth about $11,000. Over the same 10-year period, Blackberry shares went from about $25 to a high of $139 and are now around $10 per share. Markets have always fluctuated up and down. Some lows are minor dips, while others, like the great depression of 1929 and the financial crisis of 2008, are more significant. In any case, ebbs and flows in the market have become more common. Trying to predict the market to capitalize on market movements is difficult, if not impossible. But careful planning can help you participate in the market and minimize your losses. Let’s review some of the fundamentals of market investments. Bulls vs. Bears You’ll hear financial analysts talk about the market or a particular stock being “bullish” or “bearish.” But what does this mean? Simply put, a bull market refers to a market that’s on the rise. It’s characterized by a sustained increase in market prices. During these times, investors have faith that the uptrend will continue in the long term. Typically, the country’s economy is strong and employment levels are high. A bear represents a market condition where stock prices are falling and widespread pessimism causes the negative sentiment to be self-sustaining. As investors anticipate losses in a bear market and selling continues, pessimism only grows.

You can moderate the impact of market fluctuations by selecting a mix of investments to reflect your needs. Below are two strategies that can help you do this – asset allocation and dollar cost averaging. Asset Allocation One of your best defences against volatility is diversification. By investing in a variety of: •

equities and bonds;

international and domestic;

guaranteed and market-based; and

large and small companies,

you can protect yourself from feeling the brunt of large market swings. If you’re not interested in actively managing your investments, you can choose an asset allocation portfolio that matches your comfort level of risk and goals. The asset allocation funds undergo regular reviews, and are adjusted if necessary based on market conditions. Dollar cost averaging In addition to lump sum investments, you can make regular monthly contributions. When the markets are down and prices are lower, your regular contributions purchase more units. When prices rise, you’ll purchase fewer units at the higher price. The average cost per unit could end up being lower than if you purchased them all at once. A volatile market may make you anxious about your investments. I’m here to help ensure your investment portfolio stays on track to meet your long-term goals and tolerance for risk. Together we’ll create a plan that helps you retire your way, with confidence.

Remember, a gain or loss is only realized when you sell your shares of an investment. Even though dramatic market changes may compel you to sell your investments, it’s best to guard against emotional decisions. A review of historical market behaviour shows that periods of growth often follow market downturns. I Love Rutland │ WINTER 2015 21

YOUR STARS ALIGN with MISS

PAIGE

THE STARS ALIGN FOR YOU IN DECEMBER ARIES

March 21 - April 19

It’s time to trust the laws of attraction Aries, put your thoughts out there and enjoy this period of new encounters and increased friendships. Important contacts may be forged this month and your energy is magnetic, with Venus strong and direct, the path of success should be an easy walk. The weeks ahead will provide you with the clarity you’ve needed since early December, focus and change are yours for the taking Aries. You are starting a new year with sumptuous opportunities. TAURUS

April 20- May 20

As the weight of November fades December could feel like a walk in the park. Recognition, rewards and prestige will be enhanced greatly, and you; Taurus, deserve it! Your often unseen, practical nature is truly a gift at times like this and tangible results will materialize. Do what you feel is right, your taste for the unusual will be matched only by your Taurus spirit. While it feels like you really have the edge on most aspects of your life, don’t let your health get in the way of the important strides you are making, overwork can lead to depression and injury, shine on, balance and perspective must be maintained in order to keep that edge Taurus! GEMINI

May 21 - June 20

You’ve dealt with some highs and lows recently that have left you weary, even disillusioned; you need to be reentered in order to move into a new phase Gemini. Be kind to yourself, Mercury, your ruler has thrown more than a few snags your way recently, don’t make any life altering decision in the coming weeks, hold off a little longer. Put the finishing touches on

the things you feel you must, but don’t sign off on anything until after the 28th. Remember, knowing our own nature is a gift, you Gemini’s have a tendency to act and react automatically, so be aware, your need to be cautious now is clear cut! CANCER June 21 - July 22

You are known for your emotional depth and strong intuition, a sensitive, romantic water sign. Unfortunately, your constant focus on relationships is sometimes not in your best interest, Single Cancer’s may be finding themselves craving companionship during this period, it may feel like romance is everywhere for everyone else, slow down, patience is a virtue! Partnered Cancer’s could find themselves reveling in a period of heightened emotional connection with their partner, communication and a willingness to resolve past issues comes easily, the current Mercury Retrograde will help maintain calm in the sometimes dramatic and “crabby” Cancer’s relationships. Poorly matched Cancer’s will be sensing the return of the emotional roller coaster, and while you loath change in love, and would always prefer to hold onto it, your intuition knows your depth and devotion must be matched. Strong ties to your own family have formed your values, values few will mirror to your satisfaction; this is a testament to your character, not a flaw. You may feel the pull to break out of your comfort zone near the end of January – explore these feelings, it could be well worth it Cancer. LEO July 23 - August 22

Your ego is often at the forefront of your success, especially in love relationships, which, for male Leo’s are ultimately more important than work

26 WINTER 2015 │ www.iloverutland.com

and life relationships. Fortunately for both sexes, you are entering a period of attentiveness and diplomacy that is affecting many aspects of your life, a welcome change from your mindset in past weeks. Caring for those in your life will come with ease during this new phase, you find balance effortlessly and those resentments and feelings of lack of support are slipping away. You’re positive, enthusiastic Leo side is purring instead of roaring, you find yourself able to hold your tongue even with those that normally frustrate you to no end. Enjoy where you are at Leo and despite your urge to dive into one of your many interests and projects, don’t take on more than you can handle – this period of contentment in an otherwise challenging life, is worth your focus Leo. VIRGO

August 23 - Sept. 22

You love the challenge of each New Year as it rolls around, you see it as an opportunity to fix and reevaluate things. Work your magic Virgo, but avoid changes that will affect you financially, you are still in need of restraint and caution financially, quick decisions, particularly in the “lending” department, a past problem for you, have to be avoided. Don’t mistake your honest motives for the motives of others, maliciousness is out there. Your very active Virgo mind is going a mile a minute and as always, you want to take on a full load, but recognize your need to rest, by about the 25th, the time of the full moon, your desire for rest and renewal will be overwhelming, do yourself a favour, break away from the grind Virgo! LIBRA

September 23 - October 22

You may have noticed thIt’s not your imagination that you are feeling a sense of urgency that you have to get things in order now! In December Mars turns

retrograde in your sign and will remain until late January, with action and energy about to hibernate, this is your time to make things happen! Around the time of the full moon you could be called on to offer some much needed assistance to a close friend, don’t let yourself feel like they are burdening you, Libran’s have always been known for their ability to put themselves in another’s shoes, to see the world through someone else’s eyes. This is not the time to think of yourself, use your easy going nature and ability to sooth and calm, to bring harmony and balance to someone else’s life. The admiration for your selflessness will be a priceless reward Libra. SCORPIO

October 22 - November 21

Scorpio’s path is a challenge, particularly in romance and a true Scorpio wouldn’t have it any other way. A deeply intense sign where there is always more than meets the eye. You Scorpio are entering a period of great illumination and fulfillment. Professionally your achievements could be in the spotlight, you take your work very seriously and your persistent drive and undeniable magnetism is shining! Incredible progress is on the horizon for you Scorpio, take the time to recognize the gifts that your hard work and determination are about to offer you. For Scorpio when the stars align, love and success come hand in hand, you may have recently met your match, likely another water sign or found a new level of depth with your existing partner, Let go of that Scorpio restraint and revel in the sun! SAGITTARIUS

believed was dealt with long ago has resurfaced around the 29th, bringing with it anxiety and confusion, address this demon once and for all, don’t lose the momentum and good fortune you started December with. Your vibrant, expansive personality needs to feel free, not contained. You are entering a period of optimism and looking to the future, dreaming like you haven’t been able to do in your recent past Sagittarius. CAPRICORN

Dec 22 - January 19

The planetary alignments for January may see you face some tough challenges Capricorn. However, you will find the energy and enthusiasm to tackle most of what comes your way and that fog of indecision you felt last month is lifting. Stop questioning your powers of attraction and value. Your inner strength is beginning to shine through and reflect outwardly, the positive effects on your relationships at a personal level are undeniable, particularly in matters of love, the timing couldn’t be better for you Capricorn! But remember Capricorn – life is never just black and white AQUARIUS

brought on by the positives of your love life with have a profound effect on how you deal with most things this month. Someone in your life is searching for guidance and looking to you; don’t miss this opportunity to use your logic and intelligence for the greater good Aquarius. PISCES

February 19 - March 20

This could be a favourable month for those of you with a creative mind, and many Pisceans are blessed with envious creativity. In January you may feel a pull to explore your individuality but quickly realize that you swim much better in a school than alone, don’t look at your interdependency as anything other than a gift. As January progresses you will enter a phase of heightened personal awareness, take the time to explore your nature, understanding ourselves guides us on our daily paths - Pisces are spiritual, emotional and often overly sensitive – these can be positive traits but also potentially dangerous, keep your foundation of reality strong Pisces, you may find yourself very much in need of it in the month ahead, don’t drift!

January 20 - February 18

You begin the month in a position of personal power Aquarius, with the Sun in your sign (until the 28th) you can anticipate fulfillment in a love relationship and the return of true romance. Other aspects of your life may find you questioning recent choices – your ingenuity and intelligence will push those nagging doubts aside and the enthusiasm

November 22 - Dec 21

You are feeling a return of control in your life this month, particularly in financial matters. Possibly because Sagittarians seem to be guided by luck, good things happen to Sagittarians and this is often because of your optimistic outlook and positive disposition believed by many to attract good fortune. However; not all aspects of life will be guided by luck, you may find a matter you
