first words

GOOD HELP IS HARD TO FIND If you’re a manager or a business owner, you may have made the statement ‘It’s hard to find good help.’ Now first, before I go any further, I want you to notice that the statement is a conclusion. And, if you’ve read or listened to any of my information before today, you’ll know that when we come to a conclusion, we block out all other possibilities. Now, the need to find good help is not limited solely to the business world. Throughout our community, there are a host of organizations which are always looking for good people. They are looking for a special kind of person: volunteers. One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Unpaid volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. However, volunteering is a two-way street and it can benefit you and your family as

much as the cause you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network and boost your social skills. OK, maybe you don’t have time to volunteer -- that’s totally reasonable. Between work and family, it can often seem like there just isn’t a spare minute. But in many cases, volunteering is something you can do with the family. And you don’t have to think of it as a massive time commitment. Most places are thrilled -- and extremely appreciative -- to get an hour or two of your assistance. Skip one episode of Duck Dynasty, and maybe a little time on the PS4, and you’re all set. For the overscheduled person, your job can be an excellent resource for volunteer opportunities -- sometimes during work hours. It’s also not a bad way to impress your higher-ups. And, hypothetically speaking, let’s say you’re... we’ll call it... underemployed. It can get pretty demoralizing after a while. The sweatpants, couch, flat-

screen, bag of Cheetos -- all very tempting. Volunteering is a terrific way to take up some of those empty hours. You can renew your sense of self -- your sense of purpose. And really, who had a more fulfilling daysomeone mindlessly staring at an Excel spreadsheet, waiting for 5 o’clock, or the person sorting donations at the local Food Bank? Who made more of a meaningful impact? Hint: It wasn’t the Cheetos guy. The right match can help you find friends, reach out to the community, learn new skills and even advance your career. Volunteering can also help protect your mental and physical health. Take a moment and find out what you can do. With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are enormous to you, your family and the community.

NEW MEMBERS URGENTLY NEEDED New members are necessary, so that our club can continue to provide much needed, financial support to the Rutland community. In the past nine years we have given over $225,000 in financial aid to numerous organizations and under privileged individuals in the Rutland and Kelowna area.

DIGGING OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD The Creative Writing students of Nancy Holmes’ Editing and Publishing class at the University of British Columbia have been preparing a community activism project focused on the community of Rutland. Affiliated with the Welcome Wagon, this package will include: a graphic novel, chap books, a book of poetry, a magazine and creative guides which will all be distributed to the front doors of new inhabitants of Rutland.

As a student, and a part of this project, when I moved to Kelowna three years ago for University, I was told not to live in Rutland. Rumors on campus were that it was dingy, dangerous, and generally not a pretty place to choose a home. It wasn’t until gathering my inspiration this year for my magazine project for DYN throughout Rutland, that I uncovered the community’s true colors. Scattered with beautiful orchards and ranchers that look out onto mountains and fields of horses, Rutland has turned out to be everything beautiful that Kelowna is known for. This is why, for my project being a lifestyle magazine in particular, I played with the different ways that I could create an attractive sense of place in Rutland, exploring aspects of the community such as personal style, home architecture, and local food and drink. I want my readers to realize the

connections that my piece has to their own lives, as well as admire the beauty that their neighborhood holds. I believe that it is important to be proud of your neighborhood, in order to be truly happy in your home. The authors of DYN Rutland have shaped their poetry, songs, and stories for this year’s project through history lessons from museums, family stories from members of the community of Rutland, and letters and pictures found in archives. We hope that our stories touch your heart in the sense that they resemble some of your own stories about family, community, mystery and laughs. In partnership with the Welcome Wagon, artsVest BC, the Eco Art Incubator, Lake Publishing, and URBA, Dig Your Neighbourhood will open up a dialogue about the way in which we see and experience this community.

WHAT’S NEW IN “R” TOWN? Laurel D’Andrea Special to I Love Rutland

The great thing about spring is new growth, brighter days and people are generally happier and healthier. I am happy to report that Rutland is enjoying new growth, brighter days and people really do seem to be smiling a little more. So what’s new in “R” town? The businesses on Asher Rd have experienced some new growth; URBA would like to welcome Stylize Hair Studio and Naughty Girl Essentials. These two businesses both have something unique to add to our neighbourhood and they are definitely worth checking out. If you’re looking for a new spot to try when it comes to food you can wander down Rutland Road South and check out Swankies Gourmet Hot Dogs or the Wing n it Pizza Place. Both places are busy and people love the food, location and options available. For those of you who frequent Willow Park Plaza, you have noticed the sign saying “coming soon?” The old Mosaic Book Store will be the new home to Wings Pub and Grill. I don’t have an opening date for you but I am sure it will be worth the wait and URBA is thrilled to have them in “R” town. The warmer weather, bright sky and longer days make some of us want to renew our commitment to fitness. Rutland does have a few great spots to go for a nice walk: Ben Lee, Lion’s Park, and the dog park by the YMCA. With that being said I am eager to see what the “Our Rutland Project” with the City of Kelowna will be presenting to the public. People were asked what they wanted to see the $100K to go towards. Once the survey was done,

the top five choices were put back up on the City of Kelowna website for people to narrow down. The top five choices in no particular order were: •

Roxby Park Enhancements

Fitness/Urban Movement Park

Public Market Space

Aurora Park Enhancements

Community Mural Program

Lives in Rutland Specializes in Rutland

Once we know what proposed projects residents prefer, the city will carry out a feasibility analysis to determine detailed costs and ensure the project can be realized by September. I hope each and every one of you went to the city website and had a look and or made your wishes known. This project is for all of us so if you don’t tell us what you want we will never know. So why are people in Rutland smiling more? Personally I think it’s because they are happy with what is happening when it comes to the changes and future growth coming our way. I think it’s because businesses like Cooper Foods in Rutland are a finalist for Corporate Citizen of the Year. Dave and the staff at Cooper’s have been there and help anyone they can and I am proud they are part of “R” town. I also think people are happy because Easter is on its way, the Vaisakhi parade is gearing up for 26th of April and the May Days Celebrations are just around the corner. For me it’s simple: I am happy when the members of URBA see that we are busy trying to make Rutland’s town center a place people want to enjoy and also that new businesses want to be part of Rutland’s continued growth, because we really do have great retail shops, restaurants and many services to offer.

BUSINESSES TRADE BODY SLAMS TO HELP KIDS

On a warm autumn evening last October something special was happening at the Rutland Centennial Hall. Local businesses joined forces to put together an event that raised over $16,000 for the BC Children’s Hospital; a place that helps thousands of children from the Okanagan every year. What kind of event? It’s not what you might expect. It was a family friendly professional wrestling show dubbed the ‘Kelowna Invasion’. Mike Chisholm Special to I Love Rutland

Event masterminds Mike Rizzo, General Manager of Costco Kelowna (who has dabbled in the past as an independent pro wrestler), and Mike Chisholm, born and raised in Rutland and one of the partners of World Financial Group here in Kelowna, never had a doubt. “People love to be entertained and when done right, a live professional wrestling show can entertain better than any concert, movie or circus. We believed that if we could get the people out there that the community would love the event,” Chisholm said. Turns out they were right. Hundreds of people showed up to see the 7 match spectacle that showcased local wrestlers like Scotty Mac, Collin Cutler, and Kyle Sebastian, as well as wrestlers from the lower mainland, and even WWE legend Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake. Rizzo also ended up being on the wrong end of “The Barber’s” famed shears, and had a new haircut at the end of the night to show for his troubles. “Whatever it takes to help the kids, I’m usually game for. If we can entertain the fans, and raise some money to help sick kids and their families, then a few bumps and bruises, and an unexpected haircut are really a small price to pay,” said Rizzo. “I’d make that trade in a heartbeat.” Over a dozen local businesses stepped up to sponsor the event. When all was said and done, over $8000 was raised that night. With corporate matches from both Costco Wholesale and World Financial Group, that number has ballooned to over $16,000, with all of that money going directly to the BC Children’s Hospital. The event was such a hit with the fans that the duo is constantly being asked when the next show will happen. “It was amazing to see people who attended the show transform before our eyes” Chisholm added. “Some were timid at first, not knowing what to expect. But by the end of the show they were standing, cheering the good guys, and booing the bad guys! The atmosphere was unbelievable!”

Taking a pounding all while raising money to help sick children

Rizzo and Chisholm recognize a good thing when they see it, so they are giving the fans of Rutland what they want. ‘Kelowna Invasion 2: …Straight Outta Rutland…’ will take place Friday May 2, 2014, once again at the Rutland Centennial Hall. Net proceeds from this event will again be donated to the BC Children’s Hospital. They plan on putting on an even better show this time around, with more twists and turns than the first one. Former WWE superstar Val Venis will headline the card, which will also feature tag team sensations “The Bollywood Lions” Gurv and Harv Sirha, from Surrey BC taking on the Amerikan Guns. The event will also include some of the top independent wrestlers in Canada, including local stars Kyle Sebastian & Collin Cutler (aka Cougar Meat), Scotty Mac, The Black Dragon, and KC Andrews. Also appearing will be “ECCW Champion “Ravenous” Randy, “Loose Cannon” Kenny Lush, “Streetfighter” Tim Flowers Jr., “Dastardly” Danni Deeds, and many more. Tickets are now available at World Gym, Packing House Pub, and Lorenzo’s Barber Shop on Rutland Road. This event is expected to sell out, so be sure to get your tickets early to avoid missing out on a great evening of family entertainment in the heart of Rutland. Advance tickets for the event are $15 each, or 4 for $50. At the door, all tickets are $20 each. Doors open at 630pm and the first bell rings at 730pm. This is a general admission show, so get there early for a great seat.

A CLASSIC REVIVAL Callium Smith Special to I Love Rutland

I don’t shoot indoors often but when I Love Rutland Magazine contacted me to shoot the pioneers of progressive rock, YES, at Prospera Place, it’s hard to say no. The British rock group has achieved worldwide success over their 40 years of crafting music, producing 20 studio albums since 1969. Known for their esoteric lyrics and spectacular live performances, the band set the scene for an evening of ethereal sounds with their twenty minute song, Close to the Edge, sending the crowd into a dreamy state of nostalgia until the fizzle of a magic spark could, or couldn’t, be seen flying

off the end of bass player, Chris Squire’s finger at the end of each song. Seeing these artists play with the youthful rock n’ roll intensity, despite their relentless years of success, was apparent; two guitars draped around Steve Howe, a massive triple neck bass held over the head of Chris Squire, the psychedelic sounds of Jon Davison and Geoff Downes’ epic organ solo during the encore song of choice, Roundabout. If you’ve never heard of these guys before, it’s about time you raid your parent’s vinyl collection, dust off the record player and explore the sounds of your of mind.

THREE MONTHS IN & THE RESULTS ARE SHOWING Rhonda Laturnus Results 4 Life Fitness

I am very excited to introduce to you my client: Tamara Henderson. Tamara has been doing amazing with her dedication to a healthy lifestyle. Tamara’s commitment has paid off in a huge way; her results are incredible. Since our first meeting on Nov 27/13, Tamara has lost 41.6 pounds and a 9.9 percentage drop in body fat. This percentage is made up of a loss of 61 pounds of body fat and a gain of 19.4 pounds of muscle. A person’s body fat percentage is simply the percentage of fat your body contains, which will tell the story of a person’s overall health and fitness level. How much we weigh is not the key; rather, what we In the beginning are made up of is the key. In order to reduce body fat a person must increase metabolism by building lean muscle (weight training); proper nutrition is also a vital piece of the puzzle for losing body fat, avoiding processed food and eating fresh whenever possible is imperative for success. So before you decide how you are going to “lose weight”, remember to consider that “weight” consists of both lean body mass and body fat. Try to keep your weight loss goals realistic and remember, keep the calorie-burning muscle and lose only the fat. As you can see from Tamara’s photo taken at the end of November as compared to the photo taken recently, the progress is amazing. She not only looks fantastic but more importantly her physical and cardio health is greatly improving. We have set a long term goal (Christmas 2014) as well as monthly short term goals which follow the SMART mnemonic: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time based. Tamara is continuing to add more real food and less processed food into her diet; we are trying to do less calorie counting and more chemical counting. Tamara’s

After three months

workout plan includes a minimum of 30 minutes of cardio each day as well as at least 3 days of resistance training. The resistance training is very important for decreasing body fat percentage. An increase in muscle tissue causes an increase in our metabolic rate. When we cut calories without exercise we can lose muscle as well as fat. I am extremely proud of what Tamara has accomplished and am very confident she will reach her long term goal. Tamara is already looking towards joining Results 4 Life Fitness in upcoming events such as Run for the Cure and the Terry Fox Run. I very much enjoy working with Tamara and am looking forward to sharing her further successes with you. Results 4 Life Fitness has several training locations available including a newly expanded fitness facility in Black Mountain. I am looking forward to the upcoming spring boot camps; please text, call or message me on Facebook for details. Book now for a free fitness consultation.

PROUD TO BE A PART OF THE CHALLENGE This is the third installment in our weight loss challenge that we introduced in our December issue and while each installment has been filled with positive results and inspiration, the current energy and momentum surrounding the challenge has taken on a life force of its own!

Wendi Swarbrick I Love Rutland

Our I Love Rutland family is really getting excited with the progress. The challenge itself has many individuals and factors involved, none of which would make a bit of difference, without the amazing strength and spirit of Tamara Henderson – Rutland’s Challenger!

Recently, the magnitude of what Tamara has taken on while selflessly agreeing to allow us to track her progress, has really hit home. Nothing is more personal than how we feel about ourselves as human beings, and for her to agree to open herself up to the community she lives and works in is incredibly brave and shows us and everyone what she is made of! We are very impressed with the amount of work, determination and dedication shown by Tamara each and every day and by the quality of training, expertise and motivation her trainer Rhonda Laturnus, owner of Results 4 Life Fitness, has brought to the challenge. This is about so much more than weight loss; this is a life altering experience that we are all so proud to be a part of!

HELLO RUTLAND! I am starting to see some serious results and loving it! Rhonda has managed to keep me motivated and as time goes by she challenges me to push myself that little bit farther and make it count. She is a real godsend and she trains with so much heart. Tamara Henderson I Love Rutland

I may have been a bit shy at the start, but now it feels good to show my face and show off the progress I have made! On top of the weight loss I am enjoying the benefits of a stronger, more flexible, fitter body. I met one of my personal mini goals of being able to wear high heels without doing myself in by the end of the day. I can break into a jog without breaking a sweat, and Rhonda has me doing exercise moves I never imagined I could be doing so soon. I fit into the Easter goal dress my mother bought me a full month early! And I had the confidence to buy a new goal dress for the winter holidays that is 8 sizes smaller. I am so excited to be on this journey and to know that I have Rhonda there to help me back up when I fall. It’s two months until my birthday, and I am on track to weigh less than I’ve weighed in 8 years. I know I can do it and I know the hard work will be more than worth it.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO TAKE YOUR CPP? Wendi Swarbrick I Love Rutland

I have a lot of clients ask me this question, and there is no one answer that fits all. Many people have their theories about the CPP system and its viability and those people seem to think that you should take it as soon as you can. Their thoughts are who knows what will happen with the government run pension system – get it as early and for as long as you can. Others realize that they may not have the longevity of others and feel if they are only going to live another 10 or so years, they may as well get what they can while they can. The truth is that there are some very real consequences to taking it early and the reduction in your overall payment can be fairly significant. Statistically, the average payout from CPP is less than the maximum Old Age Security payout and in 2012 less than 10% of people on CPP received the maximum monthly payout of $986.67. The reasons behind this are that they haven’t contributed enough throughout their working years to qualify for the maximum. To qualify for the maximum monthly amount from CPP you have to have contributed the maximum for 39.5 years, between the ages of 18 and 67. Actually much more difficult to do than it sounds. There was a time when a person got a good job and stayed there for 40 years, maxing out their contributions and hopefully getting a company pension as well. You don’t see that very often anymore, people tend to change careers as many as three times in their lives statistically and spend more years in school and retraining in the process. The CPP system allows you to drop

7 of your lowest contributing years from the equation but if you’ve taken years off for school, to raise children or were just between jobs, it’s very easy to end up well below the maximum level. For 2013 you would have to earn $51,000 to reach the maximum pensionable earnings. It’s also worth noting that the maximum pensionable earning amount of $51,000 is above the Canadian average annual salary of $48,250. Taking your CPP before the age of 65 reduces your monthly payment. The new rules are such that your monthly payout will be reduces by 31.2% if you take it at age 60 and that will keep going up each year until it hits the maximum reduction of 36%. If you wait longer and don’t take your benefits until the age of 70 you could see your benefits go up by 42%, so the difference between taking your CPP at 70 vs 60 is significant – a potential increase of 78% more income. Your CPP maximum is capped at the maximum you’re entitled to when you first begin drawing your CPP, plus inflation adjustments. If you took your CPP at 60 in 2003, your maximum cap is $801.25, if you waited until 2013 when you turned 70, your cap would be $1012.50. A higher cap can be very important if you need to claim CPP survivor benefits. The decision on when to take your CPP is not an easy one and everyone’s situation is unique. How important is the amount you receive and how long will you live? No one really knows the answer to that but it still has to be given careful consideration. Don’t make the decision without having your facts straight and do the math.

In the first stage of adult life, you leave high school, college or university and enter the workforce. Your career is just getting underway. Personal insurance is even more important if you’re starting your own business or working in a contract position that doesn’t offer a benefit package. You’ll want to review your life insurance needs, for you and your partner. If you’re buying a home, think about the advantages of purchasing life insurance, rather than mortgage insurance. If you haven’t yet investigated long term care and critical illness insurance, you should do so now. Products can be adjusted to help ensure the success of your plan while at the same time allowing you to save adequate funds for your children’s education, perhaps through RESPs. Empty nesters

At this stage, your children have left home and gone out on their own. Your career is beginning to peak and retirement is just around the corner. Your discretionary income has grown now that the expenses of raising your children have all but disappeared. You’ll have the capital to pursue financial investments that can further enhance your retirement plans. You may have questions about your and your partner’s RRSPs, or if you should make adjustments to the investments in your portfolio. You can protect your retirement funds with long term care insurance. Retirement

Finally, it’s time to turn your retirement plans into reality. You’ll move into new financial products that will provide you with a comfortable living, in a tax effective manner. You’ll look at income options such as annuities and Registered Retirement Income Funds (RRIFs). It’s important that you develop and maintain a specific financial plan so you can enjoy your new life of leisure. It’s also time to get your estate in order to ensure that after all of your hard work your wishes will be carried out as you planned.

OUR PEOPLE Dejan (D.J.) Rasovic is remembered as a great family man and community leader. A local contractor, Rasovic, 40, tragically died last month in an industrial accident on his property in East Kelowna. DJ moved to the Okanagan about a dozen years ago with his family from Vancouver, and was very active within his church and the local Serbian community. Leaving behind a wife and three children, DJ will be greatly missed by everyone who had the opportunity to know him. “There are so many words to describe such a large, pure, unique, and special soul. There is no replacing a son, a brother, a father, or a friend like DJ. My heart aches for all who were close to this gentleman, but in the same way, our hearts should also glow with pride simply for knowing such a phenomenal character.” Condolences expressed by a friend. Having had the experience to meet DJ, we truly miss the passing of a good friend and community leader. Godspeed my friend.

TOP 5 EASTER TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD BERMUDA: Bermudians celebrate Good Friday by flying home-made kites, eating codfish cakes, and eating hot cross buns. According to Bermuda-Online. org, the tradition is said to have begun when a local teacher from the British Army had difficulty explaining Christ’s ascension to Heaven to his Sunday school class. He made a kite, traditionally shaped like a cross, to illustrate the Ascension. The traditional Bermuda kites are made with colorful tissue paper, long tails, wood, metal, and string.

NORWAY: Norwegians have an interesting tradition for the season known for “Easter-Crime” or Paaskekrim. At this time of year, many around the country read mystery books or watch the televised crime detective series on national television, according to The Norway Post. Many families escape up to the mountains for the vacation week beginning the Friday before Palm Sunday and ending the Tuesday after Easter Monday. When spending time in a ski cabin in the mountains, a popular past time is playing Yahtzee. EUROPE: In parts of Northwestern Europe large bonfires, called Easter Fires, are lit on Easter Sunday and Monday. While there are various explanations for the origin of the Easter Fires, the most common Saxon tale is that Easter is a time when spring becomes victorious over winter and the fires were to chase the darkness of winter away. Today, however, the meaning of the fires is simply to bring communities together. The nights are festive with heavy consumption of gin, lager, and snacks. SWEDEN:

country of Sweden, Easter is celebrated with meals of eggs, herring, and Jansson’s Temptation (potato, onion and pickled sardines baked in cream). The most interesting tradition to come out of Sweden is that in the days leading up to Easter Sunday, children dress up as Easter witches, wearing old and discarded clothes. Traveling from home to home in their neighborhoods, the children trade paintings and drawings for sweets. HAITI: In Haiti, Holy Week is marked by colorful parades and traditional “rara” music played on bamboo trumpets, maracas, drums, even coffee cans. The holiday is a mixture of Catholic and Voodoo traditions. Voodoo believers make an annual pilgrimage to the village of Souvenance. In the photo below devout voodoo believers hold a goat head and other parts, as offerings to the spirits, during a ceremony in Souvenance village, Haiti. Showing devotion to the spirits, the celebration is marked by drumming, chanting and animal sacrifices.

A WHOLE LOTTA LOVIN’ I’m a 27-yearold guy who registered for an online dating service about two months ago after seeing all the ads about people meeting their life partners there. C. Dnaltur & Rutland Girl I Love Rutland

I met a girl on the website and we started chatting online and eventually on the phone. She was smart and funny, and we connected really well. She expressed apprehension that I might not like her when I saw her, but we became friends on Facebook, and in her pictures she appeared to be goodlooking. When we met for dinner, I saw that she was overweight. I realized the pictures on Facebook were mostly close-ups. However, our first date went well. We’ve been on three dates now, and she’s a marvelous human being: caring, sweet and smart. I know that just by asking you this question I come off as a really shallow person, but I can’t seem to find the physical attraction. There is this voice in my head that tells me to appreciate the physical side of her, too, but I can’t do that. Should I discuss this with her? Big Love HE SAID:

Now when you say overweight, are you saying ‘dip your ice cream in gravy’ obese or could stand to lose a pound or 40? But seriously, she knows she’s fat and that being heavy is not a selling point in the dating market. Thus her close-up photos on Facebook and her hints that you might not like her when you met. If you want to kiss her off because you know you’ll never want to kiss her, it’s early enough that you can simply say you’ve really enjoyed getting to know her, but you don’t see this heading toward a romance. She’ll probably guess why you dumped her. But if she asks you point blank, then

Highway 33 AutoPro 160 Highway 33 East

be honest and say you’re not into her because she’s fat. You’ll probably really crush her already low self-esteem, but hey – you told the truth right? Don’t worry; she can always drown her sorrows with a bucket of ice cream. However, I think you’re writing because you don’t want to stop seeing her, which is confusing you. Someone either inflames your desire or doesn’t. You’re attracted to this woman’s mind, her personality, even her face. But dating someone who is overweight is outside your comfort zone. So maybe you should try to expand your zone. My ex-wife struggled with weight issues for a long time, but with some hard work, strong support and healthy lifestyle choices, she was able to lose a lot of weight and gain a lot of self-confidence. Are you man enough to be in that kind of relationship? Or are you just afraid that your friends will label you as the ‘chubby-chaser’? Remember, big girls need lovin’ too. SHE SAID:

First off – no, this doesn’t mean that you are shallow, only human. Human nature is fickle and we are all individual and unique in many ways and yes that includes who and what attracts us. I’m sure we’ve all heard those romantic stories about people Continued Next Page Only Human

learning to love someone despite any initial attraction; for the most part, they are just stories. Physical attraction is one of several important aspects of a viable relationship, and it sounds like that just isn’t there. It could be that this would have happened even if she were slimmer. Not all relationships are destined for romance. It’s great that you enjoy her company and like and respect so many things about her; unfortunately, physical attraction isn’t one of the benefits of this relationship and likely never will be. Since this is not the type of relationship either of you were

ultimately looking for, there is little point in continuing. In fact, it’s best to be upfront as soon as possible, before her feelings get any more involved than they already may be. You’ve stated that you really like a lot of things about her so I’m sure you will have the decency to end this as respectfully and decently as possible, and this should go without having to be said, but I will say it anyway – there are many ways that you could tell this woman that despite how well you get along, you don’t feel romantically inclined towards her, without ever mentioning her weight.

YOUR HOROSCOPES Horoscopes by Paige I Love Rutland

Aries

This month brings the beginning of what could be a long period of self improvement with many highs! Your courageous Arean nature ensures you will continue on, unhindered by any obstacles in your path. However, this is not the time to make irreversible, life changing decisions; this is a time to build on your strengths. And yes, respect is coming your way, Aries! Taurus

Not your time to sit back and watch, hard work is staring you in the face. Don’t ignore the feeling you’re having – you know some tough decisions will have to be made. Venus, the ruler of Taurus, ensures that you are in a privileged position. Despite the hard work, you will remain optimistic and your natural obstinate nature means you will be constructive and ultimately prevail, Taurus! Gemini

Don’t get ahead of yourself, Gemini; tie up

those last few loose ends. The people you usually count on in times of change may prove to be uncharacteristically unreliable. Be prepared to forge ahead on your own. You are filled with exuberance and energy during this period and that alone will get you there. Your Gemini charm is unstoppable! Cancer

You are in better spirits than many at this time, Cancer; despite a few glitches here and there, luck is on your side. No denying it – this is a good month for you especially in love and relationships. Venus, the planet of love and harmony, is in a configuration of splendor. You may find yourself unusually sentimental and emotional but remember, love can be complicated and you don’t always have to learn things the hard way, Cancer. Leo

You’re enjoying the sense of contentment you are feeling right now, partly because you’ve made a point of setting aside time for yourself and your thoughts. Despite your natural tendency to want to rule the world you are enjoying some privacy and calm. Even the great Leo’s energy

has its limits and quiet reflection has its benefits. This is your time to keep your feet on the ground, Leo – accept it for what it is. Virgo

Sorting things out for you will take persistence and it doesn’t help that you keep changing your mind and ultimately resetting the goals. You can’t be uncooperative and uncompromising and not expect consequences. You may want instant gratification but your actions are causing the opposite result. continue on this path – you have the ability to think big and aim high to get great results in the months ahead, just find your focus and stay the course. Libra

This month could prove to be a game changer for you, Libra! Yes, you are always well regarded at work, but keep caution close at hand over the coming month. Your circumstances are changing and some of those changes need to be handled with tact and kindness. Ultimately you are looking to the long term, Libra. Your engine is revving, you have no interest in old patterns and less tolerance for anything you feel is holding you back! Personal contentment is key to you these days and despite finding yourself in a period of amazing, unusual and out of the ordinary intensity, if you curb your impulses, your actions can result in the changes you need.

Sagittarius

This is a romantic time, with plenty of attention coming your way, and you are in fine form! Deeper connections bring on adventurous and exciting times romantically. Unfortunately, life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows; you will experience family harmony and contentment but also disappointment and some strain. Your finances will continue to be solid; generosity from an unexpected source may come your way. April could find you acting impulsively and while luck is on your side, caution is wise, Sagittarius.

Scorpio

You’ll be trying to keep your head down and work hard but diversions and distractions are proving to be too much; focus can be an elusive concept. You’re in your own groove these days, Scorpio, and not so open to being

Capricorn

Your fair and disciplined nature is shining through, and those around are receiving you with enthusiasm. On the darker side your tendency to be secretive and controlling, even with

those closest to you, makes it difficult to understand what is going on with you and can lead to misunderstanding and resentment. Don’t lose patience with them, gain personal insight and avoid the issues in the first place. Aquarius

Watch your approach for the time being; don’t fall into your helter-skelter mode, Aquarius. Not everyone approves of your methods. Your drive for freedom and your insistence on your rights is pressing and leads to confrontation. Try staying calm and open minded. Work on your people skills, a little effort goes a long way sometimes. Don’t let the day to day details obscure the big picture – use your visionary insight to see what really matters. Pisces

This is a time when you will need to “walk the talk” and stand by your beliefs and convictions. You will have a lot on your plate and much of it will pertain to money – both for immediate needs and future plans. Money matters become important or at least the main focus, but smart moves have to be thought out. Be sensible – caution and restraint are a must. Beware of possible conflicts surrounding jointly held possession.

READING, RITING, RITHMETIC & RELATIONSHIPS? OOPS!! I think they forgot one. When did we get training on how to be in relationships: family, friendships, marriages, parenting and work relationships? It always amazes me that one of the most foundational aspects of living well has not really been systematically taught and not always modeled well in our schools, families, churches or businesses. Without going into all the statistics on divorce, work conflict, loneliness, depression etc., we are all aware of the relational challenges friends, family or ourselves frequently face. Garth Walker, MA, RCC Life Choice Consulting

There are bright spots in each of these learning contexts in recent years. I do catch wind now and again of some excellent work being done in some schools today with courses like the Heroes program and Roots of Empathy. A few parents are taking courses on parenting. Some couples are taking premarital coaching opportunities or going on marriage enrichment retreats to keep learning how to relate. Some churches are offering courses like “Boundaries” that have helped many, including those who don’t normally attend a church. Companies are becoming more proactive in offering seminars on communication, conflict management and are helping with counselling costs. As a counsellor who spends a lot of my time journeying with clients who have relational issues, one of the missing pieces for most people is that of not knowing how to communicate well. In this first article on communication, we will cover just a few of the skills needed to relate well with others. 1. Learn to listen well. Shut off the TV, turn off your cell phone and IPad, move the newspaper off of the table, put down your work.... get rid of the distractions and pay attention. Also shut off the chatter in the back of your mind after you have listened to one or two sentences – those thoughts focused on building your reply or rebuttal (the “BUT ...”). You probably don’t have the whole story yet. You cannot fully listen and be building a reply at the same time. What will show that you are truly listening is if you ask more questions to clarify what you think the other person is trying to say. We have all experienced the frustration and hurt when people don’t listen to us – so learn to give the gift of a listening ear. Now I have to admit that this had been a challenging one for me as I am highly distractible outside of my office. My dear wife helps me refocus when she realizes I am hyperfocused in on something else or distracted in thought when I need to be tuned in to listening to her or my grandchildren (yes, I am getting up there and I might be a little ADD to boot). 2. Ask questions about what you can observe – the body

language and tone of voice. Do not assume you know what they mean! I cannot say this enough – DO NOT ASSUME! We see smiles and hear laughter from a distance, we see someone roll their eyes or hear the volume go up. We don’t necessarily understand what it really means. When it is interpreted negatively, our emotions kick into gear and we react – setting in motion a circular chain of emotions and choices that spiral downward into hurt and conflict. Imagine that this chain can often be broken with a simple observation and question! Example: If I ask my granddaughter to take out the garbage and she rolls her eyes at me, how will I interpret that? Probably, that she does not want to do it. What emotion might that trigger in me? I can think of a few. But what if I paid attention to the body language and became inquisitive about it. What if I asked “Sweetheart, help me understand why you just rolled your eyes at me when I asked about taking out the garbage?” and she replies in a slightly frustrated tone “grandpa, grandma just asked me the same thing in the kitchen and I haven’t even had a chance to do it – give me a break.” My granddaughter has now given me critical information that I needed to understand her “rolling of the eyes” and the conversation can now de-escalate quickly in a helpful direction. And it works with adults too. 3. Reflecting – Putting into your own words what you think the other person is saying. We often attach different meanings to words or we filter the ideas through our own grid or way of processing. A “reverse reflecting” question can also be helpful by asking “What do you hear me saying?” In our early marriage, when I was in the construction industry, Saturdays were my day to pick up supplies and order materials. I would say to my wife at 8:00 am “I am heading out to go to Beaver Lumber, the Tool Place and Windsor Continued Next Page Working Together

lifestyle

WORKING TOGETHER Plywood. See you later.” She filtered my words to mean “three stops, he will be home by noon”, but did not share those thoughts. I would then go run my errands and remember another 5 or 6 other errands (that I had forgot to plan or mention to my dear wife) and show up at 4:00 pm. Guess who was not impressed? And these were the days before cell phones. Well, we eventually figured out how the other processes (quite differently) and learned to reflect what we were hearing more and about our interpretations, like:

Continued from Page 25

Wife – “So I am hearing that you have 3 stops and am guessing you will be home by noon. When do you plan to be home?” Me – “Well – let me go through my list and see if I have everything. Do you need me home by a certain time?”

Wife – “Yes, I was hoping to take the kids to the park with you this afternoon.” Me – I do have a few more errands that I forgot about but I will be home by 1:30 so that we can get to the park. Will that work for you?” Communication clarity can be achieved with just a few words or the right questions and paying attention to one another. It is not rocket science but it does take a lot of intentional thought and practice. For most of us, it takes a gradual rewiring of our minds and emotions. When done well, it helps to keep our emotions and our relationships thriving. Stay tuned for more ideas to come.

HEARTWORM & TICKS C. Dnaltur & Rutland Girl I Love Rutland

Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a fairly large worm that grows up to 14 inches long. In adulthood, heartworm lives in the heart and pulmonary arteries of an infected dog. Dogs acquire this infection through mosquito bites as mosquitoes readily pick up larval heartworms from infected dogs or coyotes and carry them to other dogs. Some geographic areas have severe heartworm problems while others have virtually none. In order for the parasite to establish itself in an area, the following conditions must be met: •

Types of mosquitoes capable of carrying larval heartworms must be present.

The weather must be warm enough to allow heartworm larval development within the mosquito. Above 10 C at night.

There must be infected dogs or coyotes in the area.

There must be vulnerable host dogs in the area.

When these conditions come together, an area becomes endemic for heartworm disease. Heartworm preventive medications are used to periodically kill larval heartworms that have managed to gain access to the dog’s body. At this point, the products available are intended for monthly use. This means each time they are given they kill all the heartworm larvae (if any) that have accumulated in the past month. There are many topical and oral choices. It is more difficult and can be very dangerous to your pet to treat the adult heartworms which is why annual heart worm prevention is so important. The season in Kelowna is from MayOctober, but if you travel south with your pet in the winter, you probably should use heart worm prevention all year long. If medication has been missed or you have not treated in the past, testing is available at a reasonable cost before you start medication. Ticks are skin parasites that feed

on the blood of their hosts. Ticks like motion, warm temperatures from body heat, and the carbon dioxide exhaled by mammals, which is why they are attracted to such hosts as dogs, cats, rodents, rabbits, cattle, small mammals, etc. The bite itself is not usually painful, but the ticks can transmit diseases (Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever) and it can cause tick paralysis, which can eventually paralyze all muscles including the breathing muscles and cause death. Tick control is important, removing the ticks leads to rapid improvement of the paralysis. It takes several hours for an attached tick to transmit disease, so owners can usually prevent disease transmission to their pets by following a rigorous grooming schedule after exercise to remove ticks. What are the best ways to deal with these blood-sucking parasites? Prevent Ticks from Attaching: Revolution (selamectin) is a spot on product that can be applied to the skin once monthly and will kill the tick as soon as it bites. Advantix (Imidacloprid/Permithrin) keeps the ticks from attaching at all. This product is a pesticide and is not to be used on or around cats.

Environmental Control: Treating the yard and outdoor kennel area. There are products that can be used to spray the outdoor area. If ticks are indoors, flea and tick foggers, sprays, or powders can be used. Inside, ticks typically crawl (they don’t jump) up and may be in cracks around windows and doors. A one-foot barrier of insecticide, where the carpeting and wall meet, can help with tick control. DEET, found in many over-thecounter insecticides, is toxic to pets

and should not be used Check your dog for ticks after a walk: The best way to find ticks on your pet is to run your hands over the whole body every time your pet comes back from an area you know is inhabited by ticks. Ticks attach most frequently around the pet’s head, ears, neck, and feet, but are not restricted to those areas. The safest way to remove a tick is to use a pair of tweezers or official tick tool. Do not use rubbing alcohol on the tick as this could cause the tick to release its toxic contents into the dog. Use the tweezers to take hold of the ticks mouth parts as close to the dog’s skin as you can; pull slowly and steadily. Try not to leave the tick’s head embedded in the dog’s skin. Don’t squeeze the tick because it might inject some disease-causing organisms into the animal during the process. Do not apply hot matches, petroleum jelly, turpentine, nail polish or rubbing alcohol because these methods do not remove the ticks and they are not safe for your pet. Once you have removed a live tick, don’t dispose of it until you have killed it. Put the tick in alcohol or insecticide to kill it, don’t crush it. If you want to submit them for analysis put them in a baggie, seal it well and bring it to us. We will call the Lyme Disease Society for that and we don’t get result back on individual cases. After you pull a tick off, there will be a local area that could look red, crusty, or scabby. A mild antibiotic, such as over-the-counter triple antibiotic ointment can help, but usually is not necessary. The inflammation should go down within a week. If it looks infected or if you are not sure if the whole tick was completely removed, please contact your veterinarian.

The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon ‘The dog was lying on the grass in the middle of the lawn in front of Mrs Shears’ house. There was a garden fork sticking out of the dog.’ The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time is a mystery quite like no other that you have read.

The “detective” and narrator is an oddly strange young man, Christopher John Francis Boone. Christopher is 15

and has Asperger’s, a form of autism.

He can tell you all the prime numbers up to 7,057, but very little of human relationships. He loves lists, patterns and logic. He detests the color yellow and being touched. He has never gone further than the end of his road alone, but when he finds the neighbor’s dog murdered he begins a journey that will forever change his small world. Christopher is a character that you will not soon forget and Mark Haddon has depicted his world in a deeply moving, often humorous novel that will keep you engaged until the last page.
