Firstwords These are not new inventions; they’ve been around for over a decade. How great is that? You get to the intersection and you now have the choice to decide whether or not to cross. Chase Jestley Publisher I Love Rutland

To cross, or not to cross? This is the dilemma faced by pedestrians everywhere when getting to an intersection when the light is green. Do I have enough time to make it across the street or will the light change while I’m in the middle of the street? Invariably, I make it just past the centerline before I have to break into a run to get off the street (there’s always that one driver just itching to punch it when the light turns green – and of course that would be the one directly across from me.) There are of course a few solutions for this – wait and cross at the next light (right, unless you are pushing a stroller, nobody does this.) Or, conversely, there are these neat inventions called crosswalk timers.

Admittedly, they do cost more than regular crossing lights, but don’t the benefits outweigh the costs? In studies everywhere it has been shown that pedestrian motor vehicle incidents have decreased significantly in intersections where these have been installed. Researchers Arvind Magesan and Sacha Kapoor of Erasmus University in Rotterdam studied five years of data from Toronto: Intersections with countdown timers had, on average, five fewer pedestrian collisions per month. So this begs the big question – why aren’t these potentially lifesaving devices installed by the City of Kelowna? Oh wait, they are. In fact, I have seen them all over the place in the Mission, Downtown, and Glenmore. Everywhere except Rutland. Is there a reason for this? I do not know but it is a good question. During the last municipal election, Walter Grey did say that Rutland

was a priority for his potential (and now current) administration. Now it is true that there have been a number of improvements, including the new bus exchange that has only one bus stop at it, but I am at a loss to figure out why we can’t benefit from these simple devices also. I’m sure there must be an explanation. Personally I’d like to believe that we don’t have them because the Mayor and Council think we’re better drivers and our pedestrians are smarter than in those other areas of town, and therefore we don’t need them. But who am I kidding? Now to be honest, in that same study, Magesan noted that the number of vehicle crashes did increase by nearly 22%, but he attributes that to drivers seeing the countdown and speeding up to make it through a light that will soon turn red. Tit for tat I suppose. For now, I’m left to wonder why we don’t have these devices as I’m walking down the street. I’ll be the one sprinting through the last half of the intersection because the light changed while I was crossing.

ART FROM THE heart

OUT&about

Pure Joy with CD MAC

I

first met CD MAC as she sculpted and dabbed enamel paint on a mural... one of six...she’d created over the course of a month at the new Rutland Transit Exchange. It was this past September...about a month before the ceremonial opening and grand reveal of Kelowna’s newest vehicular addition—the “Big L’il Bus” for the Rapid Transit program—just unveiled.

Rand Zacharias Special to I Love Rutland

CD MAC is not a new computer gadget...she’s an artist who first started painting murals while living in the Bella Coola valley and up on the Chilcotin...many moons ago. Then, at the Elizabeth Lake Lodge in 2005—she has seven on-going murals she works on each year. She’s a gifted painter who is obsessed with her passion—“I paint, therefore, I am”—could well be her credo of joy that sums up her life. Her life partner also seems to have gotten her attached to fishing...a sign reads “Gone Painting,” but she’s adding “Gone Fishing” to her signage...a nice side hobby for the nature-loving artist who mostly creates wildlife landscapes, sky-scapes and waterscapes with palates that can be calm and soothing or brilliant and vivid—it just depends on her “joy” level. During the course of her one-month labour of love, CD would have passersby comment on her work. “These people actually feed my energy,” says Mac, “who doesn’t like a pat on the back when it comes to one’s life work? These folks added to my research as I tried to interpret the past, present and natural beauty of Rutland.”

OUT&about MAC has taught workshops for young and old alike over the course of the last two decades. She’s taught in the interior and opened the eyes of teenagers and seniors, too. “Let’s go outside,” she tells her classes, “I want you to see that the sky is not ‘one’ colour—it’s a whole rainbow of various colours. Do you see them?” Mac purports it is here when jaws drop and eyes are opened. “People quickly are witnesses to a whole spectrum of colours on the mountains, in the trees and in the sky. It fills me with joy to see their faces light up.” The joy that radiates from MAC is obvious when you meet her...the artist has been CD Mac's murals depict Rutland and the community's historic roots. learning while painting from, and in, Nature since youth...she loves what she does. A New Take on Portable

I

n parks and public places throughout the community, it’s hard to miss the “little blue rooms.” C. Dnaltur I Love Rutland

These portable toilets are provided by the city as a convenience to our citizens, so they can enjoy these public facilities to their fullest. Recently however, it was discovered that someone had a new take on portable with one of these facilities in Ben Lee Park. Being “in need” of the facilities, I ventured into the little blue room only to discover that someone had decided they needed it more. To my dismay, while doing the ever so obvious shuffle in public, I look in to see the toilet seat missing and the paper holder gone, in fact every removable part was missing – even the floor! Now, Interior Portable Rentals and the City have a very arduous task in maintaining these portable toilets and keeping them clean, but one can only wonder what form of grossness happened to be on these pieces when they were removed. It is a public toilet after all, and unless someone is there 24 hours a day keeping it clean, there is absolutely no way anything was completely sanitary there. What can be said – Only in Rutland. he Kelowna- Rutland Lions Club was formed in 1964 and has been serving the Rutland community ever since. Their accomplishments have been nothing less than incredible. They constructed Lions Park on Grey Road and were also a major contributor to the building of Centennial Hall and the surrounding Centennial Park. Mission Creek Regional Park was completed with the assistance of the Kelowna Rutland Lions Club and a cairn exists there in honour of the Lions’ contribution. Wendi Swarbrick I Love Rutland

The club is always willing to step in and help out the community, often supporting some very large projects in the process. Most of us are aware of the Lions Club and the great work they do, and the list of just some of the contributions made by the club over the past 7 of their 50 year history is impressive. To make you aware of just how many people and organizations actually benefit from their efforts we have listed a few: • • • • • • • • •

Over the past 9 years, with the help of BC Gaming Funds, the efforts of the Kelowna-Rutland Lions Club has resulted in $225,000 worth of assistance going into our community. $23,770 was awarded to RSS students in the form of bursaries. In 2012, six Rutland children dealing with physical and mental challenges were able to attend Camp Winfield due to a donation in the amount of $16,500. Overall, Camp Winfield has received $50,500 from the Rutland Lions Club. The Medical Support & Supplies donation through the club paid for medical supplies such as medication,

Overwhelming support for the Food Bank

I

n the wake of the inaugural Rutland Community Food Drive all that really needs to be said is that Rutland is a community to be proud of.

Chase Jestley and Wendi Swarbrick I Love Rutland

The event, our first annual food drive, was in support of The Kelowna Salvation Army Food Bank which is based in the Rutland Community Life Centre. Some of us here at I Love Rutland were not aware of just how Kicking the event off, the Kelowna Pipe many families rely on the Rutland Food Bank (Salvation Band got everyone's attention. Army) and when the actual numbers were brought to our attention, as well as the fact that they were running very low on food, we knew what needed to be done. A few calls later and the first (of many) Rutland Community Food Drive was in the works. Sonia Withers, Community Ministries Outreach Coordinator with the Salvation Army, Al Hamill, Sales Manager with I Love Rutland Magazine, and Dave Perfitt, Manager of Cooper’s, teamed up to put the wheels in motion and the rest just came together. The Army and Navy volunteers agreed to man the barbeque and did so with style and humour, Coopers donated all the food and drinks for the barbeque, the I Love Rutland Team coordinated the food drive, and Bird and some of the guys from the Rutland Chiefs kept us entertained and really did a great job of drumming up more donations! The crew from Straight Outta Rutland sold t-shirts and donated the proceeds to the food bank, Two Small Men with Big Hearts donated a truck to use for the day and the list goes on. Some local businesses donated items right off their shelves while others placed donation boxes in their shops for their customers to fill. Suffice it to say, the community really pulled together and the results were fantastic. Coopers did an amazing job of putting together 200 packages containing staples for a family meal, which made it so easy for people to economically purchase an item that they could donate directly to the food bank and know that they were contributing items that were on the food bank’s wish list. What a great idea! www.iloverutland.com

Also, a loud round of applause for the Kinsmen club for their very generous $500 donation towards the SA food bank! Thank you so much. The community, businesses and individuals alike, came together and raised over $4000 in food to help those in need. Now that’s a good day! While

LIVETOride

The Riding Season Comes to an End Rutland Girl I Love Rutland

W

arning to all Rutland residents, our community is about to be infected with a little known yet very serious and contagious affliction.

This strain has increased in strength in the past few years and unfortunately has been diagnosed in rapidly increasing numbers of the Rutland population. While few of you have heard of it, most have been witness to its devastating effects. It doesn’t discriminate and attacks men and women without mercy, leaving friends, family and caregivers feeling hopeless to ease the pain of their loved ones. The stigma attached to it often keeps the sufferers from speaking openly or seeking any kind of therapy, thus adding to the challenge of finding adequate treatment. Years of research have finally made some headway; it has at the very least been identified as a virulent strain of P.M.S., or “Parked Motorcycle Syndrome”. The symptoms can range from anxiety, panic, night sweats and irritability to classic depression symptoms including lying on the couch watching far too much TV, sitting in the garage staring listlessly at their "baby" and even outright hissy fits. The symptoms generally last for 6 to 7 months; this can vary depending on the individual’s resilience to bone chilling cold wind and the quality of riding gear. P.M.S. tends to strike in early to mid-October (right now, so be vigilant), peaking in January with severe symptoms continuing up until the end of February and finally a reprieve from the most painful symptoms as March rolls around. Long trips to Mexico and Belize in January and February have been shown to provide temporary relief with an early spring proving to be the only cure for the most severe cases. This is a rudimentary list of signs and symptoms of this potentially devastating syndrome, for more information please refer to our website or send us an email with your questions or concerns – we will assist in any way we can. Isurvivedpms2013@rutlandrocks.ca. RUTLAND RIDES! Now, on a more serious and yes sad note, we have to say goodbye to another fantastic riding season. Living in the Okanagan is a blessing in many ways, and no, we do not take it for granted. Take a stroll down your own street and look around to see what your neighbors have in their drive-ways and garages – just don’t get arrested. Everywhere you look in Rutland you see boats, motorcycles, quads, you name it. We are out there enjoying the lakes, the roads and the mountains, not taking anything for granted. Unfortunately it’s that time of year when we have to winterize our bikes (and our other summer toys) and say

LIVETOride goodnight as we put them to bed for the winter (KDSC will show you how to do this if you want to learn). Everyone I’ve spoken to that rides had a great year, the weather was stellar for riding and the number of group rides and bike events was at an all time high this year. Rides that raised funds/toys for charitable organizations (Kane’s), poker runs for fun, runs put on by all the various bike clubs, even family reunion bike runs. This year was the 6th annual event for my personal favourite, Kreater’s annual Ride n’ Rock, always guaranteed to be a blast with a great mix of people and killer music. This year it was 54-40 and they never disappoint! It was impossible not to notice the number of bikes on the road this year, seems like everyone is riding these days – right from the young guys with their crotch rockets to the retired couples with their cruisers and matching intercom/Bluetooth helmets. The old stereo type of anyone that rides (especially a Harley) is a biker, is a thing of the past; now anyone can and does ride. Rutland has a higher than average number of riders and there are a few factors that contribute to that – mainly, Rutland residents have always had their own way to rock and are just a little bit out of the box (we wouldn’t have it any other way), so it stands to reason that we would be ahead of the pack with the popularity of riding. It’s also worth mentioning that Rutland is home to the largest motorcycle training program in the Okanagan and, from the reviews I’ve heard and read, the safest and most comprehensive training program in the Okanagan. The Learn to Ride Program at Kelowna & District Safety Council has become so widely known and respected that they have had to increase the number of classes/programs several times in the last couple years. Well worth checking out for anyone thinking that riding is on their bucket list. Some recent statistics brought to my attention indicate that some of the motorcycle

It wasnt hard to see everyone anxious about the last big ride of the year during the annual Toy Run

class groups are as much as 65% women riders – nice! There are currently about 100,000 riders on BC’s roads; unfortunately, with increased ridership comes increased motorcycle accidents and more fatalities – crashes are said to be up 55% from 2010 and more than half the people killed in motorcycle accidents (this is new) were over 40. With the average age of motorcycle riders being much higher than it was in the past, it serves to reason that today’s riders are considerably more affluent than they were even 20 years ago. Thankfully, BC’s provincial government is paying attention to the changes happening out there on the roads. A recent panel review aimed at making motorcycle riding safer and lowering the number of fatalities, has made nine recommendations. While the majority of them are tougher restrictions aimed at the riders, they have also recommended changes aimed at making vehicle drivers more aware that they’re sharing the road with motorcycles; since the rider was found to be at fault only 25% of the time when involved in a multi-vehicle crash, this, it would seem, is long overdue. Until next spring…………………………………

In an 11-yearlong Harvard Medical School study of more than 3,000 women, researchers found that diet cola is associated with a two-fold increased risk for kidney decline. Kidney function started declining when women drank more than two sodas a day. Even more interesting: Since kidney decline was not associated with sugar-sweetened sodas, researchers suspect that the diet sweeteners are responsible. Messed-Up Metabolism According to a 2008 University of Minnesota study of almost 10,000 adults, even just one diet soda a day is linked to a 34% higher risk of metabolic syndrome, the group of symptoms including belly fat and high cholesterol that puts you at risk for heart disease. Whether that link is attributed to an ingredient in diet soda or the drinkers’ eating habits is unclear. But is that one can really worth it?

drank, the greater their risk of becoming overweight. Downing just two or more cans a day increased waistlines by 500%. Why? Artificial sweeteners can disrupt the body’s natural ability to regulate calorie intake based on the sweetness of foods, suggested an animal study from Purdue University. That means people who consume diet foods might be more likely to overeat, because your body is being tricked into thinking it’s eating sugar, and you crave more. A Terrible Hangover Your first bad decision was ordering that Vodka Diet— and you may make the next one sooner than you thought. Cocktails made with diet soda get you drunker, faster, according to a study out of the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia. That’s because sugar-free mixers allow liquor to enter your bloodstream much quicker than those with sugar, leaving you with a bigger buzz. Cell Damage

Obesity

Diet sodas contain something many regular sodas don’t: mold inhibitors. They go by the names sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate, and they’re in nearly all diet sodas. But many regular sodas, such as Coke and Pepsi, don’t contain this preservative.

You read that right: Diet soda doesn’t help you lose weight after all. A University of Texas Health Science Center study found that the more diet sodas a person

That’s bad news for diet drinkers. "These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it -

YOURhealth they knock it out altogether,” Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology and biotechnology at the University of Sheffield in the U.K., told a British newspaper in 1999. The preservative has also been linked to hives, asthma, and other allergic conditions, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Since then, some companies have phased out sodium benzoate. Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi have replaced it with another preservative, potassium benzoate. Both sodium and potassium benzoate were classified by the Food Commission in the UK as mild irritants to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.

Is it more harm than good?

Rotting Teeth With a pH of 3.2, diet soda is very acidic. (As a point of reference, the pH of battery acid is 1. Water is 7.) The acid is what readily dissolves enamel, and just because a soda is diet doesn’t make it acid-light. Adults who drink three or more sodas a day have worse dental health, says a University of Michigan analysis of dental checkup data. Soda drinkers had far greater decay, more missing teeth, and more fillings.

Reproductive Issues Sometimes, the vessel for your beverage is just as harmful. Diet or not, soft drink cans are coated with the endocrine disruptor biphenyl A (BPA), which has been linked to everything from heart disease to obesity to reproductive problems. That’s a lot of risk taking for one can of pop.

Your October Horoscopes

Aries - Fasten your seat belt, because a wild New Moon in your 7th House of Partners on October 4 can take you and your relationships on a roller-coaster ride. However Plutos influence can incite power struggles and sudden shifts of circumstances and moods. Remaining reasonable when you deal with emotionally inconsistent people and calming your own volcanic feelings can make the difference between war and peace now. The independent Aries Full Moon on October 18 in your 1st House of Personality acts as a reminder to address your own needs before worrying about others. The happier you are now, the more valuable you'll be to those around you. On October 21, rational Mercury's retrograde turn in your 8th House of Intimacy reminds you to back up and renegotiate your relationships. Teaming up with the right people will add power and passion to your life Aries Taurus - Your relationships remain top priority this month, but you encounter unexpected issues achieving a healthy balance between

intimacy and independence. You are also feeling pressure to redirect your life toward reaching more meaningful goals. Unstoppable Pluto can make your job feel oppressive if it doesn't support a higher purpose. You have an urgent desire to make sudden changes at work in order to break out of a rut. Nevertheless, it's difficult to initiate action, and Mercury's retrograde turn on October 21 makes it even tougher to gain the traction you need. Clear your mind and just let it happen Taurus, digging in your heels is futile. Gemini Life should be exciting, inspiring, and maybe even a bit dangerous this month. The urge to open your heart and experience love in different forms can provoke risky behavior with the lovely Libra New Moon in your 5th House of Romance on October 4. Your passion for pushing the limits of partnership is underscored with amorous Venus's move into adventurous Sagittarius and your 7th House of Others on October 7. The love planet tempts you to toss caution to the wind and pursue pleasure with unreliable individuals. October isn’t the easiest time for you Gemini but it promises to be very rewarding. Cancer - Life is taking twists and

turns no one anticipated, but such is the planet Earth at this time. Things have to end for others to begin, and if it were left to our egos to achieve it we would never get where we’re going. You have learned to turn the mechanism of your life over to your higher self and to the extent that you’ve done that, life is accelerating rapidly now. Acceleration is never the easiest experience, but it can be exhilarating enough if you can let go of the uncertainties that always accompany a sudden speed up. Although you cannot deny that these are serious times, the Sun-Neptune trine on October 25 and the Mars-Pluto trine on October 31 give you the courage to smile as you move through these days with unflappable resolve. You know that still small voice that is your heart speaking to you, trust it completely Cancer. Leo - You'll spend a lot of time expanding your mind this month Leo, because October starts with the Sun in objective Libra and your 3rd House of Learning. However, gathering information that clashes with what you already know may create as many problems as it www.iloverutland.com

YOURstars solves. Whatever you perceive you are lacking right now, KNOW that this lack is an illusion Leo – believe in the abundance of the universe over the next three weeks and you’ll be shining brightly. The world needs your light – you are the Sun itself Leo! Virgo Your finances are your primary concern this month as the Libra Sun moves through your 2nd House of Money until October 23. You feel as if you are scrambling to get your cash flow back under control and additional problems with a business partner may be disruptive into mid October. Virgo, while you tend to believe it’s better to understand than to wing it, that is a false belief and impossible to do right now. Don’t over think it, sit with whatever’s in your heart – turns out you’re much better at processing feelings than you would have believed. This could be your exercise of the month Virgo. Libra - If you have a partner, it's time for a refresh to keep this union

interesting; if you're single, you may be ready to take a shot at getting back in the game. The Sun is in your sociable sign when October begins, casting you in a bright spotlight. However, the traditionally moderate Libra New Moon in your 1st House of Self on October 4 is a wild one that has the potential to turn your life upside down. However, as October 16th nears, maintaining your cool isn't easy with tense lunar aspects to demanding Pluto and pompous Jupiter. Sticking with the status quo is, perhaps, your least effective option with this transformative pattern. On the other hand, making radical changes in all aspects of your life this month can free you from boredom and introduce you to new worlds of power and excitement.

is to deliver you to this new inner territory. It probably seems like many fragments of you are coming together, into a much more cohesive whole. Even if you can’t see that yet, it is what’s happening, and this month you will come to understand it much more than you have so far. Emotions are the catalyst, as long as you don’t get caught identifying yourself with them. Nomatter how it feels, and it isn’t easy, you’re at the most expansive moment you’ve seen in a long time Scorpio. Sagittarius Your interactions with others are off the wall this month with the ambiguous Libra New Moon falling in your 11th House around October 4th to 9th. The harmony can be unsettled by mistrust and manipulation as it runs into some rough waters choppy with surprises. Unpredictable Uranus's opposition to this SunMoon conjunction and stressful and secretive Pluto can complicate almost any gathering. As this is the month of the enigmatic Scorpio it is also a great time to explore the mysteries of metaphysics or the depths of your psyche if you are so inclined. The Sun's entry into

Scorpio - More than any other sign, yours is undergoing the most profound p e r s o n a l transformation. It’s so deep and all pervasive you could think of it as a metabolic or even cellular makeover. Of course, with such a huge process going on this month, it becomes all-important not to mess with it, allowing your higher self to accomplish its purpose which

Capricorn - Your drive to succeed professionally is in high gear this month with the strategic Libra Sun moving through your 10th House of Career until October 23. Halloween Trivia & Fun Facts

B

ecause of the unknown, Halloween is the one of the most captivating holidays and is often celebrated by both adults and children. The element of surprise makes it fun and unpredictable. C. Dnaltur I Love Rutland

Halloween Holiday Trivia Halloween is on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday for honoring the dead. Halloween was referred to as All Hallows Eve and dates back to over 2000 years ago. Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death. Jack o’ Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday. Pumpkins also come in white, blue and green. Great for unique monster carvings! Halloween was brought to North America by immigrants from Europe who would celebrate the harvest around a bonfire, share ghost stories, sing, dance and tell fortunes. The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as human.

Bobbing for apples is thought to have originated from the roman harvest festival that honors Pamona, the goddess of fruit trees. Black cats were once believed to be witch's familiars who protected their powers. In 1962, The Count Dracula Society was founded by Dr. Donald A. Reed. To this day, there are vampire clubs and societies with people claiming to be real vampires. There really are so-called vampire bats, but they're not from Transylvania. They live in Central and South America and feed on the blood of cattle, horses and birds. Many people still believe that gargoyles were created by medieval architects and stone carvers to ward off evil spirits. The mask used by Michael Meyers in the movie "Halloween" was actually a William Shatner death mask from Star Trek, painted white.
