first words

HOT TIME SUMMER IN THE CITY!

We are about halfway through summer vacation, and now the novelty of being out of school has been replaced with ‘I’m bored’. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world; it’s time to take advantage of what the community has to offer. Go to the beach Which beach might matter to you, but it certainly won’t make much difference to your gang. With all the access in our community to beaches, finding the right spot should be a breeze. Go with pails, shovels, and sunscreen. Don’t worry about how the sand will come off. It’s worth it. Go to the Park We are ripe with a host of parks and playgrounds, get out and enjoy them! The waterpark is always a fun alternative for the hot summer days. As well, the City of Kelowna is setting up the Park & Play program right here in Loseth Park on July 14, 21 & 28, Lions Park on July 17, 24 & 31, Gerstmar Park August 5, 12, 19 & 26

and in Ben Lee Park August 8, 15, 22 & 29. A great and free way to have fun with the kids!

the children and buy popcorn, Junior Mints, and an enormous drink. Sit back, relax and enjoy the airconditioning. And the show, too, of course. Want to enjoy a movie outdoors? The Starlight Drive-In is just down the road in Enderby, offering a great movie experience for the whole family.

Go on a boat ride We are so close to four spectacular lakes, getting out on the water is a sure way to have a great day with the family. Camp out

Take the gang out for a night and keep them up way past their bedtime

Pitch a tent, unroll the sleeping bags, and get out the marshmallows. It’s time for the city children to get a little dirt under their fingernails and, sometimes, you don’t even have to leave the backyard. They’ll be begging for more nights under the stars.

Isn’t that the best part of summer? That you don’t have to wake up at 7 a.m. for school the next day? So take them out and bring them home smiling and sleepy — even if you suffer ill consequences the next day.

Go on an athletic adventure

Don’t let the ‘nothing to do’ doldrums hit. Keep the activities light and fun and seize the opportunity to have fun in the warm Okanagan Sun!

Kayaking, hiking on the Greenway, skateboarding, yoga, or sailing. Make sure it’s something different that your children have never done before and aren’t doing in school. Catch a movie On a steamy day (or night), take

letter to the editor

WHO’S SPEAKING FOR RUTLAND? To Editor:

the

I am writing this letter to express my feelings on what is happening in Rutland. I am a long time Rutland resident. My family has deep ties to this community and I feel a strong personal connection to all that is Rutland. I, like many others, have seen the Rutland Centennial Park land and hall become unattractive and have also seen the decline in attendance at local events being held there. I joined the Rutland Park Society two years ago hoping I could make a difference. I have attended every Rutland Park Society meeting I could, including board meetings (where I am not allowed to speak) and I have taken great interest in the so called discussions of ‘selling off ’ Rutland Centennial Park. What is going on

behind closed doors concerns me and I question who is making decisions on behalf of the residents of Rutland, and for whose benefit? I also attend other community meetings and gatherings regarding Rutland. Regarding the five most popular projects chosen to do with the ‘token gift’ of $100,000 from the City of Kelowna, I questioned City representatives, Rutland Park Society members and Rutland Resident’s Association members on how they were determined. Everyone said the public had lots of opportunity to have input and that it was up to the Rutland Park Society, Rutland Resident Groups, URBA and TRUST to let the public know. If I wasn’t involved with two of the groups I wouldn’t have heard any of the details (maybe a flier sent to all the Rutland residents would have helped with the number of people who actually sent ideas in and at the meetings).

My experience is there is very little public attendance at two of the meetings that I attend, with usually eight to 12 people attending. Information being discussed at meetings is not being shared with Park Society members. We haven’t had a public meeting since the AGM last October. At this point I am questioning why I am a member at all? The executive of Rutland Park Society continues to have meetings where members cannot attend because of ‘sensitive matters’. Communication between the board and its members would go a long, long way in putting to rest doubt, speculation and frustration. I don’t see that happening here, and nor do I expect it to change. Sadly, really great things could happen if it did. Gene Cadman Rutland

Rutland High School Classmates of 1964 gathered at the Kelowna Springs Golf Club for their 50th Reunion in June and were surprised by a special guest speaker, Mrs Agnes (Graf) Weicker who was a teacher at Rutland from 1946 to 1970. She is pictured above with a number of her Grade One students. At the banquet, she recounted many stories of Rutland, reminding us of the times when our parents came together and began rebuilding a supportive post war rural community. Her presentation touched on old memories of our first impressionable school days. Rick Preston thanked her, noting that she had been an inspiration in Grade One and once again inspired us with her wonderful stories, although he did indicate that he would like to renegotiate his grade one report card. Mrs Agnes (Graf) Weicker at 90 years young resides in Sydney and has recently published the book ‘A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE‘. The Reunion was supported with many door prizes from local Rutland Merchants and well attended with events at Rutland High School, Ancient Hill Estate Winery and Kelowna Springs.

JUST GETTING STARTED

Recently, Kelowna City Council had a first look at a refreshed brand for Rutland. Todd Sanderson, The Rutland Unified Stakeholders Team (TRUST) board member, made the presentation. Rutland is home to about 35,000 people as a part of the great city of Kelowna, BC. Rutland’s roots run deep in the Central Okanagan and those roots travel back to the turn of the 20th century when settlers with names like Gallagher and Goudie and Rutland first came to pursue their dreams and settle the land. It is after one such settler, John Hope Rutland, that the area was named. And that is the starting point in the Story of Rutland. Men and women coming from continents away, to raise their families in a land which offered peace and respect. And they found it here in the Okanagan Valley. They set about the business of building their community, one that today recognizes the great contributions of generations of families and one that embraces the cultural and religious diversity of those pioneers and those who came after them. Today Rutland is positive, dynamic, ambitious and inclusive with places of worship for over 20 different religions dotting the Rutland landscape. Sanderson says through TRUST and the Uptown Rutland Business Association (URBA) the residents and businesses of Rutland now have an opportunity to take control of their own message. “Unfairly, people to this day speak of Rutland disparagingly, with an undertone of disrespect,” he said. “We want to ask everybody to take another look and learn about the remarkable people and families who have given so much to this community.” Shawn Swail is the President of URBA. He says this refreshed look comes at a time when there is so much

positive change coming to fruition in Rutland. “URBA is working hard with a dedicated board and hundreds of volunteers in an effort to create a united and progressive voice for the future of Rutland,” said Swail. “This new dynamic branding of Rutland is yet another big step forward in this regard and will serve us well for years to come.” Garry Benson, a resident and business owner in Rutland, knows any shift in perception won’t happen overnight, “We know this will take time. It is less about the Rutland of today than it is about the Rutland of 2019 and 2029 and beyond. We know it is an ambitious project and we also know we will need to be disciplined and resourceful over a long period of time before we really see measurable shift in perception.” To follow the progress of the Rutland rebranding efforts, check out their website at www.ourrutland.ca Laurel D’Andrea is the Executive Director of the Uptown Rutland Business Association and Director with the Rutland Park Society. A dedicated community volunteer, Laurel works tirelessly to support and promote the businesses and activities in the Rutland Community. 4 x 6 oz (180 g) each salmon fillets, skin on

3 tbsp (45 ml) olive oil, divided

Place salmon fillets, flesh-side down on greased grill over medium heat, brush with remaining oil. 1 avocado, halved, pitted, peeled and cut into ½-in pieces

2 tbsp fresh lime juice

1 mango, peeled, pitted and cut into ½-in pieces

1 small red onion, finely diced

¼ cup fresh cilantro or flat leaf parsley, finely chopped

pepper,

finely

As soon as avocado is cut, combine with lime juice in medium sized bowl and toss to coat. Add all other ingredients and stir. Let stand at room temperature until ready to serve.

When pairing a wine with this dish, we highly recommend the Red Shoe White from the View Winery. Red Shoe White is a pleasing blend of Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Optima grapes. Fresh aromas of citrus, melon and spring flowers are followed by flavours of pear, white peach and lychee. An approachable, quintessential wine for everyday enjoyment!

SICK KIDS NEED TO BE CLOSE TO HOME Angie Huber Special to I Love Rutland

Imagine having a good job, and nice house with an affordable mortgage, and a wonderful family with a few great, healthy kids.

Now, imagine that one of those kids becomes terminally ill, and you have to quit that good job to travel to Vancouver to get care for that once healthy child. How will you pay that mortgage? Who will take care of your other kids? These are questions too many families have had to ask themselves in this situation, because Kelowna doesn’t have a hospice house for children! Can you also imagine what it’s like for a parent to have a disabled child or one that has 20 seizures a day? How do they try and carry on a normal life and still manage to do things like go shopping for school supplies, or take their other children out for dinner, or do Christmas shopping? Kelowna doesn’t have a respite facility for children either! The Wish Come True Society is going to change that by building a much-needed respite/hospice house in Kelowna where families can get the care and compassion they need in these situations. They are a local, non-profit society that is raising funds to help keep families together during their difficult times, rather than separating parents, siblings, family and close friends because they have to travel to Vancouver for care. Imagine being that child, not fully understanding everything that may be happening, and just wanting to see your best friend from school and have them make you laugh, or pick on your little sister.. just one last time. Help keep our kids here!

Want a great excuse to take an afternoon off from that good job, and raise some money for a terrific cause? Register to play in the 9th Annual Ugly Jacket Classic Charity Golf Tournament taking place Wednesday, July 23rd at Black Mountain Golf Course. Shotgun start at 1:00, and it’s a Texas Scramble (best ball) so you don’t have to be a seasoned golfer! Prizes include $5,000 and $10,000 cash, a brand new Hyundai vehicle, and a week in a beautiful home in Orlando, Florida - right near Disneyworld! Registration fee is $150 and includes 18 holes of golf, cart and dinner. You can also just have dinner for $50. Come out and support the Wish Come True Society in their efforts to raise money to build a children’s respite/ hospice house in Kelowna. Visit www.wishcometruesociety. com to purchase your entry fee today, or email info@ wishcometruesociety.com if you would like to sponsor or donate!

festivals

HOT TIMES AT HOT SANDS C. Dnaltur Special to I Love Rutland

Get ready as the city’s two premier festivals are poised to hit the beach. First up, the Keloha Music & Arts Festival returns for its third year (July 11–13, 2014) to Kelowna’s Waterfront Park, where Wet Ape Productions will transform the area along Okanagan Lake into a tropical island oasis— complete with palm trees, tiki torches and the Lakeside Lounge beverage gardens—for three days of performances by some of the biggest names in indie, rock and alternative music. Headlining acts will feature The Naked and Famous, Local Natives, and Canada’s newest rock success story, Monster Truck. Also included in this year’s lineup is Sky Ferreira, Kongos, St. Lucia, The Mowgli’s, Terraplane Sun, Hey Ocean!, Blondfire, The Funk Hunters, Cayucas, ASTR, The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer, Jon and Roy and many more. Located between the Main Stage and the Sandbar Stage, Keloha’s “Art Ave.” invites the whole family to get creative with fun activities such as the Keloha Photobooth, the Frozen Coconut Chalk Walk and daily sand castle building competitions on the pristine shores of Okanagan Lake. Parents can rock out in the sun to live shows while their little ones enjoy a shaded, supervised retreat at the Nannysitters Craft Tent. Attendees can also enjoy the acrobatics of Okanagan Gymnastics Club or learn a few tricks of their own with drop-in yoga classes hosted by Oranj Dance & Fitness and Chelsea Ray as well as hula-hoop lessons by The Sarong Sistas. Hot Box Yoga will be demonstrating Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) yoga, or, if friendly competition is more your family’s speed, Kelowna Beach Rentals will host SUP races and rentals throughout the weekend on Okanagan Lake. Art installations from

previous years will be showcased and a brand new Keloha-themed interactive art installation will come to life by the hands and imaginations of Alex Flury and Rachelle Braund-Read. Wet Ape Productions follows up Keloha with Monster Energy Center of Gravity 2014 (MECOG) at Kelowna, BC’s City Park from Friday, July 25 through Sunday, July 27. With its biggest lineup to date, some of the hottest names in EDM, hip-hop and live music will be performing on four stages throughout the weekend, including electronic heavy-hitter Calvin Harris, Canadian electrofunk duo Chromeo, hip-hop all-star J. Cole fresh from his U.S. tour (MECOG is currently his only scheduled Canadian stop), and Juno Award-winning indie rockers Tegan and Sara. MECOG retains its strong focus on dance music and has expanded this year’s roster to reflect a variety of genres. With its most well-rounded lineup to date, the festival will feature artists such as Adventure Club, Matt & Kim, Morgan Page, The Glitch Mob (DJ Set), Capital Cities, Chris Lake, Borgeous, Trinidad James, Bro Safari, Dizzy Wright, Robert Delong, and many more. An expected 30,000 festival-goers will also be thrilled by over 150 world-class athletes competing in seven extreme sports: beach volleyball, basketball, freestyle mountain biking, wakeboarding, freestyle motocross, skateboarding and BMX, all while enjoying the beautiful, sandy beaches of Okanagan Lake. Fun is definitely on the agenda at City Park this summer. I Love Rutland │ july 2014 13

rutland proud

RUTLAND PROUD - STEPPING OUT OF THE SHADOW I love this time of year in Rutland and this year even

Rutland Girl I Love Rutland

more so.

Our little piece of paradise has never looked better! There are a few contributing factors to this - the up-tick in the economy means we have more money to spend on our homes and yards and new businesses opening up brings new energy - but mainly it’s our much improved pride in Rutland! Yes, I know it’s always been there; after all Rutland is over 200 years old, a little tidbit that I would guess not everyone is aware of. Despite our long rich history as a hard working decent community there has always been a bit of a shadow over Rutland. Somewhere along the way we became the poor, homely cousin to Kelowna proper. I’ve spoken with some very knowledgeable, elderly Rutland residents with considerable knowledge of Rutland’s history and they have all said even back in their day, Rutland was looked down on and had for some unknown reason developed a bad reputation. Unfortunately, that same reputation continues to unfairly dog Rutland even to this day. Even more inexplicable is that Rutland’s residents have put up with it all these years. Disparaging comments, bad jokes, and snide remarks even come from realtors who tell their clients – “you don’t want to look at houses in that area”. I experienced that scenario myself when I purchased my first of several homes in Rutland. Worse, our own local politicians make negative comments about Rutland. Then there’s the horrendously bad and inaccurate reporting by some of our local media outlets, implying that every little bit of crime that happens in the city has taken place in Rutland. The inaccuracies of these blown out of proportion events is astounding, as is the false figures that are reported

BBQ, Pool & Patio Heater Connections

and called “statistics”. Shame on them! Statistically our crime rate - violent and otherwise - is lower than many other areas in the Okanagan, including Kelowna. There has also been a lot of frustration and anger among Rutland residents over the years, no make that decades, regarding the amount of property taxes we pay and the lack of services and upgrades we receive from the city in return for our tax dollars. The tax base from Rutland’s population is considerable! Someone in the Mission makes a complaint about a pot hole and the city sends a crew out to fix it ASAP; in Rutland it can take 10 years of lobbying to get a sidewalk approved, and don’t get me started on snow removal or should I say the lack of! This type of unfair treatment has to stop. I like to think that all of that is behind us! Of course you can’t get rid of a bad reputation (no matter how undeserving) overnight and it would be naïve to think that the issues that plague us will disappear right away but these problems are being faced head on and chipped away at every day. Our business community has really come together and is working very hard to see some changes come our way. There is a lot of hard work being done by several organizations and many individuals. However, in the long run it’s the residents of Rutland that will be the biggest catalyst to change and to how we are perceived and they seem to be saying enough is enough! Rutland is coming together as a community and in doing so we are realizing our value and worth as a community and that alone is enough to make others stand up and take notice. Rutland is, as I’ve said before, a fantastic place to live, work, raise a family, and start a business! Rutland has a long and interesting history, is very diverse culturally and Continued Next Page

religiously and is home to more amenities than most

Our location is second to none! Minutes from Okanagan, Wood, Duck and Kalamalka Lakes. 10 minutes to the airport, 40 minutes to Big White. Right here in Rutland we have incredible vineyards, wineries and orchards, amazing parks and sports facilities, golf courses, hiking trails galore, Mission Creek Park and Green Way hiking – anyone that hasn’t explored the Green Way really needs to, try the hike South towards Gallagher’s Canyon – that end of the park is very natural and secluded. The Y, the ice rink, BMX tracks, all types of restaurants and pubs, shopping. Tons of stuff for families and kids of all ages, Energy Plex, Gymnastics Club, Grand 10, Scandia, bowling alleys, Ben Lee Water Park, not to mention great schools, public and private, minutes to UBCO and much more … Rutland has received quite a bit of attention recently surrounding the re-branding of our community which entails a new logo and website and a slogan that states “We’re just getting started”. There has been some interesting comments floating around regarding just what exactly that means considering the age of Rutland but I think we need to take it to mean that we are just getting started on our new path of growth

and change – all positive! The re-branding is intended to get our name out there to people thinking of moving here, buying houses, starting businesses or just visiting. Letting it be known that we are a destination worth checking out, and open for business. A couple of the changes currently underway are that Shepherd Rd., (the new transit exchange), is being continued through to Rutland Rd., which means changes to Centennial Park. Yes, some of the parking lot will have to be given up for the road but in exchange the park will be getting some much needed upgrades and improvements. Several options have been presented and it will be exciting to see which one is chosen. The flea market will be moving to Roxby Park, and we will also see some really nice changes to that area (utilizing the $100,000 from the City) with the idea of giving it an outdoor community centre vibe and an area that can be used for all types of outdoor events in the future. One thing I think that needs to be addressed is this - It’s imperative that we have representatives from Rutland on City council and on any and all boards and associations that are making decisions that will affect our community and this is something that we all must take responsibility for and work towards – our future depends on this. Rutland Proud – we were then and we sure as $#@# are now!

MINISTRY CLOSING After 40 years, a charitable fixture is closing

The strength of the ministry was truly shown as they were tasked with coordinating all the donated items during the 2003 Firestorm.

Based on Gerstmar Road, the Adventist Community Services Ministry is saying goodbye to its operations and re-purposing its location for another faith based ministry.

On top of their charitable work within the community, Davis said their little organization has also been responsible for shipping five containers of items such as hospital beds, medical supplies and clothes to third-world countries such as Haiti, Guyana, Rwanda and Ethiopia.

its doors for good.

This, of course, means everything has to go. “I’m calling it a free-for-all,” says program director Thelma Davis, who has been volunteering there since 1989. Back when she started, Davis said the location was known as Dorcas, in reference to the biblical disciple from the book of Acts of the same name. “It was a small place that gave out clothes, quilts and food to people in need.” In 1995 the ministry was changed to its current Adventist Community Services and expanded their operations to include a broader range of items. “We started doing dishes and bedding and anything for a house,” she said. “And everything was always free. Some beautiful pieces came through our doors because those who donated them didn’t want to see them sold.”

But as that is all coming to an end, everything inside will be relocated to the parking lot on July 20th where people can come and get items without question starting at 8 am. For her part, Davis, who is retiring after her 25 year tenure, says that the overwhelming support of the community has been the biggest part of their success. “We want to thank all of the people who have donated over the years to Adventist Community Services,” she said. While what the next ministry in the facility will be is still unknown, Davis said that for sure it will be aimed at helping those in the community in need, just in a different form. TO RIDE OR NOT TO RIDE - THAT IS THE QUESTION Kelowna and District Safety Council (KDSC) is a long time Rutland organization known for its numerous safety and training programs.

Wendi Swarbrick I Love Rutland

More recently, it has become very well known for having the most comprehensive motorcycle rider training program in the province – just one more thing that makes Rutland great! While the learn to ride training program has been offered by KDSC for over 20 years, with the surge in popularity of motorcycle riding it has in recent years gotten a lot of recognition for the quality of its riding program. It’s worth mentioning that over 60% of the new riders going through their program are women. People come from all over BC to take this course, the draw of this course has clearly put KDSC in a “class” all its own. I’ve been hearing great things about the Learn To Ride program for years and from the view of my kitchen I have watched class after class maneuver their way around the pylons, honing their skills in the school parking lot. Spring has come and gone too many times for me to admit where I’ve watched and said “next year I’m learning to ride”. Next year finally arrived and on a wave of impulse I signed on the dotted line on a Thursday afternoon and I was registered for 16 july 2014 │ www.iloverutland.com

the class that started the next day, leaving myself no time to rethink it, or in my case – over think it. I chose to take the full “Ride Safe – Learn to Ride” course which works out to 30 hours of theory, riding skills and the MSA – Motorcycle Skills Assessment, taken over 2 weekends. For anyone considering learning to ride I highly recommend this course. It is very thorough and leaves you feeling confident with your skills and your bike and teaches you a safety aspect that no rider should be without. It’s worth noting that there are discounts on insurance rates for riders that have completed this course. The bikes are provided for the course and the road test if you choose, as well as any gear needed. So all that’s needed is to have the urge to learn to ride and to pick a date and sign up – you won’t regret it. I was quite surprised with the selection of bikes available for use with the course. If you plan on riding a sport bike, you should learn on a sport bike rather than a cruiser. It’s just common sense, right? As someone that had done plenty of riding on the back of a bike but had never so much as started a bike, I was concerned that my lack of riding experience would be an issue. This was not so at all.

on the road The instructors Derek, Bill and Uwe (Dwayne was our class room instructor), divided us into three groups based on level of experience, mine of course being the full “novice” crew. Having taken a lot of courses and seminars over the years, I’m familiar with the standard bio and introduction that usually kick starts a training seminar and this one was no different in that regard. However, listening to the instructors introduce themselves and talk about their riding experience and how they came to be employed at KDSC was not typical. They all expressed a strong love for riding and a huge respect for what it takes to be a good rider. I think we all know that those of us that love what we do are just that much better at it than our counterparts and this was clearly the case with these guys. They all had a very different story, unique experiences and totally different paths that lead them to instructing but were singular in their passion for what they do. The introduction to the bikes in the parking lot was well organized and not at all intimidating. There was a very relaxed feel to the course and enough humour injected to keep things light. Let’s face it – learning to ride a motorcycle is a pretty big deal for some of us and in the wrong situation could be really stressful. The instructor for my group (Bill Downey) Bill Downey - Instructor - KDSC and Wendi Swarbrick. did a fantastic job of making sure we were comfortable with each skill, with our bikes and of course with our own informative course with a huge emphasis on safety, a must abilities, before moving on to the next phase. YOGA SAVED MY LIFE Dustin Warwara Special to I Love Rutland

Since I was a child all I ever wanted to be was an athlete. Yet there I was, lying on a bed in Kelowna General Hospital being told I would never run again. I remember hysterically crying for days, as in one moment all of my dreams, goals and aspirations immediately dissipated. It was the worst night of my life. Nearly 10 years ago, this was my reality. In a snowboarding accident at Big White, my friend and I collided. His snowboard was lodged halfway through my knee right below my knee cap, completely severing my patellar tendon. On the terrifying trip down the hill, the look on every person’s face told me I was in major trouble. Once at the hospital, they drilled holes in my knee cap and shin, attached my patellar tendon with wires, and put me in a full leg cast for a year. That was a terribly frustrating year, being unable to take care of myself. Even worse was the day the cast was removed. I clearly remember sitting on that table telling my leg to move and not being able to move it. It was petrifying. My leg, that used to run, jump, win championships, and walk me through my life, remained perfectly still. I was consumed with grief and thoughts of never being able to walk again. With the help of my family I made it home and so began my long journey towards recovery. Determined to overcome the odds set against me, I began my daily physiotherapy visits to improve movement in my leg. Slowly, the progress began. The day I was able to get my leg to complete a full cycle on a stationary bike was a glorious day, one I will never forget. I was soon able to drive and spent most of the next year at the YMCA swimming and running in the pool. My leg was getting much stronger and I was seeing consistent improvements. I was recommended yoga as the next step in my recovery, something I had never tried. I wasn’t flexible, could barely sit down cross-legged, and was very ambivalent towards yoga. Luckily I found yoga teachers, Sheila Chutskoff and Laura Martini, at Oranj Fitness. I would rarely practice yoga, but with their encouragement, support, and guidance, my practice evolved and I began to see results. Eventually, my yoga practice, swimming, personal training, and my own internal desire to conquer my injury, allowed me to run again. My body was almost fully healed but 18 july 2014 │ www.iloverutland.com

my mind wasn’t. I became bored with my career and found myself moving to Vancouver in search of something more. I found it at YYoga where I fell in love with hot yoga and eventually took my teacher training. There I learned that yoga was not just the physical stretching that had helped with my injury, but rather a lifestyle. Yoga was a way of thinking and living. My life was forever changed. I appreciated the power of controlling my thoughts so they could materialize into actions and affect my life. The concept of Karma now made sense to me. Henry Ford said it best, “Whether you think you can or can’t; you’re right”. Whether you look to the placebo effect in science, the teachings of Karma in religion, or even in the movie “The Secret”, the idea is the same; you can influence your own destiny. Still, millions of people fail to take advantage of this simple tool. Yoga is an exceptional practice that has the ability to repair both your body and mind. It can increase cardio, lower body fat, reduce stress, and improve quality of life.

THE RIGHT FOODS ARE THE KEY You can train as hard as you want but if you are not buying the right foods at the supermarket your fitness gains are sure to come up short. Rhonda Laturnus Results 4 Life Fitness

Healthy grocery shopping starts before you leave the house, with a detailed grocery list that is not deviated from once you reach the store. If possible, avoid grocery shopping when you are hungry; temping food looks much more appealing on an empty stomach, which can set the stage for unhealthy impulse buys. Choose your shopping companions wisely and plan a shopping trip with a friend who has a similar desire to eat better. Make a bee-line to the produce section and load up on nutrients and antioxidants by including every color in the spectrum. Label reading should be a big part of your purchase decisions and be sceptical of jargon like “all natural,” “gluten free” or “cholesterol free”. Read the finer points of the Nutrition Facts label, focussing on products with higher numbers for fiber, unsaturated fats and protein. Don’t overlook the ingredient list, which provides vital information on added sugars, whole grains and lab-derived preservatives. I would like to briefly talk about building a foundation to keep fat off for good! The Fitness Pyramid consists of “Food” at the top, “Cardio” in the middle and last but definitely not least is “Strength Training”, which is the foundation of the entire Pyramid. All three elements must be incorporated if you are trying to lose weight long term or simply to be in the best shape of your life. By gaining muscle with weight training, your body changes in a special way that cannot be obtained through cardio. To keep it simple and short, muscle increases your METABOLISM. Your metabolism is the amount of energy (calories) your body burns to maintain itself at rest. The key

word here is “at rest”. Whether you are eating, drinking, watching TV, or even sleeping, your body is continually burning calories. Gaining lean muscle is the key to permanent weight loss and strength training is the key to gaining lean muscle. Make strength training the foundation to staying fit, use cardio to benefit the heart and lose additional calories, and make good nutrition a daily habit. If you follow these guidelines, with commitment and hard work you will reach your goals. I am very happy to tell you that Tamara is back on track, and has been training with Wendi Swarbrick, which has been a very positive addition to Tamara’s routine. Wendi and Tamara have been pushing themselves through twice a week at bootcamps and are doing amazingly. Having someone to train with has many advantages: Accountability, outside perspective, healthy competition, and celebrating successes together. Tamara is trying to stay in the habit of planning and preparing meals for the upcoming week which helps ward off eating prepackaged processed food. The benefits of preparing a weekly meal plan are endless: it saves money, saves time, less stress, better nutrition, and of course weight loss. THE PERFECT WINES FOR ANY SUMMER EVENT From weekend b a c k y a r d barbeques to spontaneous weeknight gatherings, summer is filled with celebrations that bring friends and family together for fabulous food, drink and fun. Whether you’re unsure of what wines to serve as the host, or the best refreshment to pick as a guest, you don’t have to be a master sommelier to choose the perfect wine pairing for every meal or occasion. C. Dnaltur I Love Rutland

As a general rule, nature has color-coded foods with the wines best suited for their flavors. For example, white wines pair well with light foods, while dark wines usually complement richer fare. Here are some more specific scenarios to help you enjoy the warm weather and good times ahead this summer. Wedding Showers and Celebrations Long summer days are a great time to celebrate big life events - like wedding showers and house-warming parties. Because many of these soirees include an assortment of foods, there are several routes you can take to discover the perfect wine pairing. For guests enjoying fresh, fruit 20 july 2014 │ www.iloverutland.com

salad or tilapia with a mango salsa, consider an herbaceous sauvignon blanc which will complement the fruit flavors with its crisp acidity. For those who prefer a more floral wine, a viognier may be the answer to go alongside any grilled chicken or seafood dish. Al Fresco Events Summer is often marked by cookouts, picnics and other al fresco dining occasions. A top choice among many guests is a vibrant, flavorful glass of chardonnay. This favorite white wine pairs well with crisp summer salads and lighter grilled selections, such as salmon and shrimp entrees. Summer Barbeques and Daytime Events If a sunny, mid-day get together is in your future, there is one delicious pairing option to consider. For hosts who plan to serve a grilled selection, such as pork chops or saucy, smoky ribs, consider pairing the menu with an expressive and fruit forward red blend. No matter what festivities are booked on your summer calendar, this season is full of delightful sips for every event.

THE CHILD OF YOUR EX - CREEPY! I’m a 48-year-old working woman, with no children. I was married briefly, in the mid-1980’s, and my ex-husband and I have remained good friends.

C. Dnaltur & Rutland Girl I Love Rutland

We share many interests and he’s taken me to dinner several times.

Recently, we shared a very long, romantic kiss when he dropped me off at my home. I think I’m falling in love with him, and he with me.

Ok, let me stop unfairly judging you for a second…no, can’t do it. For starters, you’re 48 and he’s 25 – that is not an age appropriate relationship and you should know – he won’t share his X-Box with you! friend

My best thinks I’m trying to recreate my first marriage with a younger version of my ex.

I’m worried about the implications this might have on my friendship with my ex-husband. My best friend thinks I’m trying to recreate my first marriage with a younger version of my ex, but I disagree. The two men have very different personalities and I really think our relationship could work, despite the age gap between us. Your Thoughts?

If the age difference isn’t enough of a deterrent for you - and it certainly should be! - there is the much bigger issue that is this is your ex-husband’s child, and I do mean child. Any even relatively intelligent, pushing 50 year old woman realizes that while a 25 year old male is old enough to vote and drive a car, many are still on the path to adulthood and are often referred to as kids by the rest of us grownups. I do not mean that as an insult in any way to 25 year olds; it’s simply a fact of life that it takes a long time to mature into adulthood and not too many 25 year olds, and it’s more common in males, have quite matured enough to make it there.

He’s since raised a family with his second wife. Their eldest son is 25. He recently moved back with his parents in Rutland after several years on his own.

They do say that men at that age are at their sexual prime, so this could be a great bonus for you. And think about how much fun you can have reliving your youth and exploring the new and exciting things that the next generation likes to do. Plus, think about how his friends will react knowing he bagged an older woman - every young man’s fantasy.

As for your relationship with your ex-husband, who cares? Obviously, if it was meant to be, you would have stayed married in the 80’s. Why dwell on the past? Of course, I would recommend avoiding any conversations that begin with “When I was with your dad we…” Just a word of advice. And secretly, you do get a chance to compare the old version with the new one. That could be fun, too. It’s your life, have fun with it. Presented by

This particular man child belongs to your ex-husband; I don’t care if you have more in common with him than anyone you’ve ever met - and I really doubt that you do - it’s inappropriate , just plain wrong and he should be out of bounds to you. This relationship should never see the light of day and the fact that you and your best friend are sitting around trying to rationalize this as anything less than disturbing says a whole lot about both of you. by Shilpi Somaya Gowda On the eve of the monsoons, in a remote Indian village, Kavita gives birth to a baby girl. But in a culture that favors sons, the only way for Kavita to save her newborn daughter’s life is to give her away. It is a decision that will haunt her and her husband for the rest of their lives, even after the arrival of their cherished son. Halfway around the globe, Somer, an American doctor, decides to adopt a child after making the wrenching discovery that she will never have one of her own. When she and her husband, Krishnan, see a photo of the baby with the gold-flecked eyes from a Mumbai orphanage, they are overwhelmed with emotion. Somer knows life will change with the adoption but is convinced that the love they already feel will overcome all obstacles. Interweaving the stories of Kavita, Somer, and the child that binds both of their destinies, Secret Daughter poignantly explores the emotional terrain of motherhood, loss, identity,

This book has very personal meaning for me. I am adopted. I have always known that fact about myself, it was not a secret in our house, but you still always wonder. Reading about the heartache of giving up a child and the trials of being an adoptive parent has opened my eyes to the pain that my birth parents and my parents have gone through. I am grateful to have learnt this lesson from such a compelling voice. I highly recommend this book to all mothers.

THE MAGIC OF COMPOUNDING Patti and Eric recently got married, and both have started to invest $100 a month in a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). They often worry that they’re not investing enough for a comfortable retirement, but they have just bought a house and have found that $100 a month is all they can realistically afford. Christine Lwowski Special to I Love Rutland

Time is working for Patti and Eric through the magic of compounding. One of the best ways to make your money grow is through the magic of compounding. Compounding means that you earn money on your capital, or initial investment, as well as on accumulated interest. For example, if you hold investments that generate dividends or interest in your RRSP, that money is reinvested. The value of your investments increases, so you are now actually generating income on dividend and interest income you have already earned. As a rule, the more time you have to let your money compound, the faster your savings grow and the sooner you can retire. Plus, the earlier you start, the more you may have when you retire. Check out the numbers Here’s an example of how much you could save with a $100 per month contribution, at 8% return per year: AGE STARTED

TOTAL CONTRIBUTED TO AGE 65

VALUE OF RRSP AT AGE 65

25

$48.000

$322,108

35

$36,000

$140,855

45

$24,000

$56,900

55

$12,000

$18,012

Don’t delay - The earlier you start investing, the bigger your return may be and the sooner you may be able to retire. For example, if you contributed $100 a month to your RRSP for ten years until you were 32, and then stopped - you would have invested a total of $12,000. If that money earned an 8% return, by the time you turned 65 it would have grown to $229,791. If instead you didn’t start investing until you were 32, you would have to invest $49,896 to have $230,128 by age 65. In this example, by delaying ten years you must contribute over $37,000 more to earn the equivalent amount of savings at age 65. Contribute early - By making your investment in January of the current tax year, instead of at the last moment in February of the next year, you’ll have an extra 14 months’ worth of compounding working to your advantage. Monthly contributions - If you can’t make a lump sum contribution early, you can still gain additional income by making monthly contributions. And to make it even easier to contribute regularly, you can choose to have your monthly contribution automatically transferred from your savings/chequing account into your RRSP. Consider an RRSP loan - If you can’t maximize your RRSP contribution, consider borrowing the money. You can use the tax refund to help pay down the loan, and take advantage of the power of compounding. Pay yourself first - Think of your RRSP investment as a regular bill you pay to your future self. But remember to set realistic and attainable contribution goals. Even if there are times in your life when you can’t make a contribution, you can feel good knowing the money you have already invested is continuing to work for you through the magic of compounding.

$48,000 can yield $322,108 - thanks to the effects of compounding and investing over a longer period of time. Can you get your hard earned money to work even harder? There is even more you can do to get the most out of compounding:

SCRATCHING THE SURFACE Dr. Irene Mul Okanagan Veterinary Hospital

Ear mites

Most people have heard of ear mites and know they are a relatively common parasite of dogs and cats. There is, unfortunately, a tendency in the general public to assume their pet’s inflamed ear is due to an ear mite infection, often this leads to inappropriate treatment with over-the-counter remedies. It is important to distinguish an ear infected with yeast or bacteria from one infected with mites. Most ear mite cases are found in cats. Dogs can be infected as well but dogs more commonly get ear infections of other types, or foreign bodies like spear grass in their ears. Ear mites are tiny infectious organisms resembling microscopic ticks and usually must be detected by examination of a sample of ear wax under a microscope. Infection usually produces a characteristic dry black ear discharge commonly said to resemble coffee grounds. The ear mite lives on the surface of the ear canal skin, although it sometimes migrates out onto the face and head of its host. The life cycle (the time it takes for an egg to develop into an adult mite) requires three weeks. Ear mites are inflammatory and they can generate very irritating ear infections. Skin disease can also result from infection by the ear mite.

yourself. If you think your pet has an ear problem, see the vet for proper evaluation rather than jumping straight to an over-the-counter remedy. You will need the right diagnosis before you can choose the right ear treatment product. Fleas There are over 1900 flea species in the world. Pet owners are concerned with only one: Ctenocephalides felis, the cat flea. This is the flea that we find on our pets. A heavy flea burden can be lethal, especially to young animals and older animals that can’t groom themselves or are immunocompromised. Cats can get tapeworms from fleas, so if they are hunters regular de-worming is necessary. Other diseases caused by fleas include: Allergic Dermatitis, Anemia, Feline Infectious Anemia (a life-threatening blood parasite carried by fleas), Cat Scratch Fever/Bartonellosis (does not make the cat sick but the infected cat can make a person sick). In the Okanagan, contrary to popular belief, we do have fleas. Fleas thrive particularly well in the well-regulated temperatures in the home but don’t thrive in Okanagan out door temperatures and dryness. The environmental temperature controls how fast the life cycle occurs. Fleas love to develop in the cracks between the boards of hard wood floors, under base boards and in the carpet.

Ear mites readily transmit from host to host by physical contact; treatment for mites often must include all household pets. Ear mite infection is certainly contagious among cats and dogs. Humans have been reported to develop skin rashes rarely; in general, we may consider that a human pet owner is extremely unlikely to experience any symptoms when their pet is infected with ear mites.

The life cycle of a flea takes on average 3 weeks to develop from egg to adult. After the adult flea finds a host and takes its first blood meal, the female flea begins to produce eggs within 24 to 48 hours and will lay eggs (up to 40 per day) continually until she dies. The average life span of the adult flea is 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the grooming abilities of the host. That makes for a great deal of fleas in your house from 1-2 fleas you brought home on the dog. People
