admit it, I’m a slave to public transit.

When I go somewhere, it’s generally by bus. I have time to reflect on the day, catch up on what has happened in the world, look at my Facebook page, and let someone else worry about the driving… it’s actually kind of relaxing. And to make it even better, the new Rutland Transit Exchange has the barricades off and the buses will soon be rolling through! It is a beautiful facility, complete with ample seating, nicely manicured lawns and even statues of children portraying the famous “See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil” pose (we will get back to them). Then I picked up my newest copy of the Rider’s Guide, your surefire way to find out when the bus is SUPPOSED to be there. To my dismay the schedule is, for the most part, the same. You still have to make sure that you have everything planned to the microsecond at least an hour in advance (I’ve ridden the bus here for many years; it really does take planning well in advance). In fact if you pull out a microscope, the new Rutland Exchange hasn’t even made the map…. Food for

4

Speak no evil, hear no evil, see no evil... colourful and in place at the Rutland Transit Exchange

thought – does part of the 4.5 million dollars spent include printing? (Remember those statues?) Back to the timings… I admit it must be difficult figuring out the nuances of when to send a bus, what route it should take and when it should arrive there. But if you have ever been standing out in the rain and your bus is 45 minutes late (it happened to me recently), you can’t just blame traffic. Currently, we have a total of three buses coming in and out of Rutland and taking us either downtown or further north; perhaps with the new transit exchange being opened, the schedules will continue to evolve to a point where it can be a true commuter service for everyone (don’t try to plan a trip via bus on a Sunday – I can attest that it took me three hours to get from Rutland Road to the Hospital, and one particular route has been known to be a tad bit unreliable so I’ve been told – oops, remember those statues).

September 2013

In all fairness though, public transit is a great alternative to driving and can provide you with many opportunities to prepare for your day, unwind after one, or to make sure you get home safely regardless of your situation (remember the statues). The people who really deserve our thanks are not the planners or the city officials who bring us such things as the new transit exchange (it’s really worth checking out), but the bus drivers – they are the front lines who have to deal with the irate passengers who stood out in the rain because the bus was late or heaven knows what they get to experience on a daily basis. It takes but a second to say thank you for putting up with each and every one of us, no matter what our mood. (I think there is an elementary school song along those lines). Though it really does make me wonder, why did they choose those particular statues? www.iloverutland.com

iving in a land of plenty, it is easy to forget those who need our help the most.

As we sit in the comfort of our lives, we are unaware of the efforts that surround us. The Rutland Community is working to give back to the community, and with your help, we want to eclipse that effort and show how strong and proud we are. Walking through the shelves of the Rutland Community Food Bank, it is clear where the need is. In our society, some turn a blind eye to the many of us who turn to such outreach programs for a helping hand. In a visit of less than an hour, no fewer than 18 families passed through the doors, humbly admitting their need. And though the shelves were starting to get bare, not one was turned away, with a line up of more standing behind them; all of which receiving something, making sure that no one spends the night hungry. “When our shelves are empty like this, it raises the stress levels of our staff and volunteers much like that of the clients we serve,” said Sonia Withers, Outreach Coordinator of the Salvation Army Community Life Centre on Rutland Road. ”Imagine knowing that you have hundreds of people coming to you looking for food assistance, and the shelves are empty and there is nothing to put into the hamper. But that doesn’t quite compare to the parent who doesn’t have food in the cupboard for their children.” The amount that the community food bank assists with is quite phenomenal. In 2012, they assisted an average of 129 families a month.

An Eyeful Submitted I Love Rutland

My work requires me to drive all over the area, many times a day, and I do see many interesting and unusual things in my travels. This particular trip, it is a beautiful sunny Spring day in Rutland. I am coming out of Quigley making a left onto Hollywood Road. I look left, and notice a young man coming toward me, jauntily breezing along, arms swinging, shirt off and hanging from his waist, enjoying the sunshine. I look right; all clear. I look left again and now he is closer. Double take. OMG!! It’s not a young man but very obviously a young woman! My jaw drops and I step on it, putting some distance between this

rare sight and my red face! I look in my rear-view mirror and notice two cars coming along behind me. I chuckle as I think what their reaction is going to be. All I can say is I hope that very gutsy (or foolish) young lady stayed safe that day!

BEYOND THE stereotypes

RUTLANDproud

A Great Place to Live and Work Rutland Girl I Love Rutland

W

hat do people see when they drive through Rutland neighborhoods – do they see well kept homes on nice big lots, beautifully manicured yards with flowers and amazing vegetable gardens? Do they see our thriving businesses, numerous schools, amenities etc.?

Do they then go back to their communities, turn on the news or pick up a newspaper, and see headlines that read “Drive by Shooting in Rutland” or “Rutland Residents Get Blaze for Breakfast”? Listening to the conversations of our residents, it quickly becomes apparent that most are acutely aware that our community is being unfairly portrayed by the media. There are no headlines if a duplex in the Mission burns down. The report of a few break-ins does not become “Crime Spree in Glenmore”. A little research quickly sheds light on the inaccuracy of many of the statistics that are published. Per capita, Kelowna is not the crime capital of the country and Rutland is not the armpit of the Okanagan. It is, in fact, a great place to live, work, run a business and last but certainly not least, raise a family. There have been many positives in Rutland lately, maybe that’s why so many of us were angry with the coverage of the drive by on Hein Rd.; the media was once again blowing it out of proportion. We all know that drive by shootings have happened in Kelowna with far more serious results, even multiple murders, and if you looked into the statistics you would likely be surprised at just how many have actually happened in Kelowna, a city that is not immune to gun violence. However, the majority of these occurrences were in Kelowna, not Rutland. As a matter of fact, there are areas all around Kelowna and the surrounding area with higher crime rates than Rutland. So why does the media feel the need to constantly point the finger at Rutland – sensationalism, laziness? Rutland, and more

RUTLANDproud specifically Hein Rd., has certainly had its reputation over the years but anyone that has lived here for any length of time knows that it all began with one notorious family, many years ago. That family basically took over the street and turned it into their own little crime ridden slum. Those times and that family are long gone. Hein Rd. does have its share of low cost rental units but it also has a lot of decent, hard working people and proud owner occupied homes and townhouses – it is not the Hein Rd. of years gone by. Unfortunately there is still a landlord or two, or as the term goes – slumlord, that is not conscientious about who he rents to so unfortunately, the hard work put forth by the owners and residents to clean up the area and improve the reputation is setback, again and again. Many members of our community may not be aware of the role the city has taken on with this issue. The city has been very supportive with helping out the home owners and the tenants on Hein Rd.; one quick call and they are there to enforce the by-laws on keeping properties clean and free of garbage and vehicles, they issue warnings to the landlords, tow vehicles and send clean-up crews if the landlords don’t take the necessary action in a

Rutland from the Bench

timely manner. They have planted new trees and seem to be genuinely interested in helping improve the area. Many of the residents have personally put real effort into property improvements including yard work and planting flowers and gardens. A visit with one of the residents (a tenant in one of the townhouse units) of Hein Rd. was a pleasant surprise, her townhouse was newly renovated and very well kept, the back yard like a little oasis – trees she had planted herself for shade, a rock wall built around her vegetable garden, roses, flower beds, vines, strawberries, a beautiful lawn , cedars hedges along the fence line–

nicer even than many yards in so called more desirable areas. So, while we are out there doing our best to rid ourselves of those old Rutland stereotypes and enjoying our community, let’s not forget the decent hard working people of Hein Rd. and the surrounding area, that are trying, as we are, to belong to and to build up our beautiful unique community. At times like this we all need to work together and realize that this negative media coverage affects our entire community, we need to offset it with our continued hard work in bettering all of Rutland. Remember – Rutland Proud!

BACK TOschool

New School Year Can Feel Stressful And Exciting Lisa Simone I Love Rutland

September can be a very exciting time for many students, parents and teachers. It means back to a regular routine for many or excitement to see our friends, getting a new teacher and all those brand new school supplies and clothes. For others it might not be so exciting; there may be some fear of the unknown. Especially if you are going to a new school, the stress might be overwhelming at first. These are all normal thoughts and fears but I have a few tips that might help you get through the first few weeks or so. I always tried to look at it as an adventure and something exciting, and within a few weeks it was like I had been there for years. In fact, my daughter is a high school teacher; she is starting to teach at

a new school this September as well. She has the same fears and excitement as she is planning this year to teach English for grades 10 and 11. I know she will do well and will embrace the change and the challenge to create a wonderful year for her students and herself.

excited about a new beginning or a “fresh start”

If you are attending your regular school, I hope you will reach out and welcome the new students into your circle of friends and activities. This will make the learning year go so much better for all, so you can enjoy the year together and support each other.

Some of the things that you might worry about when starting at a new school are:

Going to a new school can feel like starting all over again. Here are some helpful tips and tools you may want to try. You may feel: angry and sad about leaving your old school or friends

nervous about having to meet new people All of these feelings - and many others - are normal reactions to starting a new school.

Fitting in Most kids worry about fitting in at their new school. Sometimes it takes longer to fit in than you would hope. It’s common for a new kid to feel like an outsider for the first few weeks of school. Although this can be lonely, you can help yourself fit in by being friendly and approachable. Even if you are nervous try to smile, say hello and ask questions. It can be scary to meet new people, but remember what it was like

BACK TOschool when you started your old school — your friendships did not develop overnight. As you adjust to your new school it will become easier and easier to fit in. One of the challenges about fitting in is trying to meet new people. Here are a few places you might meet friends in a new school: The classroom: Look around you, is there anyone who sits near you who you can talk to at lunch or after school? Do you participate in group activities in class? If so, try to join a new group every time. This can be a great way to get to know people who you have never spoken with before. Clubs: Think about the activities that interest you. Is there a club at your school that reflects these interests? If so, join it! If not, consider approaching a teacher to start your own club. Sports: Most schools offer a variety of team sports and some offer different levels of sports that you can try depending on how competitive you want to be. Try joining intramural or varsity sports. You don’t need to meet all of

your school friends at school — you might also meet people in your neighbourhood. Join activities at your local library or recreation centre. No matter where you meet people, it’s much easier to talk to someone if you share a common interest. You may feel nervous about finding your way After the first day of school, the sunshine brought out Jeremiah Fabas, Lucas Gaubert around your new school. & Tony Cornell for a bit of fun and exercise If you can, take a tour of the school to help you get in math or languages. PEThealth

Obesity in Pets Side Effect of Obesity Arthritis The over-weight animal has extra unneeded stress on joints, including the discs of the vertebrae. This extra stress leads to the progression of joint degeneration and creates more pain.

Dr. Irene Mul Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Okanagan Veterinary Hospital

Respiratory problems

Obesity has become an extremely important health problem in the Western world, not just for humans but for dogs and cats as well. Recent estimations suggest that 35-55% of dogs and cats in Canada suffer from obesity Obesity in pets is associated with joint problems, diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory problems and decreased life span.

The obese pet has a good inch or two of fat forming a constricting jacket around the chest. This makes the pet less able to take deep breaths. Areas of the lung cannot fully inflate, so coughing results. The pet also overheats more easily. Many cases of tracheal collapse can be managed with weight loss alone. Diabetes Extra body fat can lead to insulin

resistance just as it does in humans. Weight management is especially important in decreasing a pet’s risk for the development of diabetes. Reduced Life Span A study of age-matched Labrador retrievers found that dogs kept on the slender side of normal lived a median of 2.5 years longer than their overweight counterparts. Increased Surgical/Anesthetic Risk Obesity poses an extra anesthetic risk because drug dosing becomes less accurate. (It is hard to estimate a patient’s lean body mass for drug dosing if it is encased in a fat suit.) Furthermore, anesthesia is inherently suppressive to respiration and adding a constrictive jacket of fat only serves to make proper air exchange more challenging.

PEThealth Why is my pet getting so fat when he really doesn’t eat that much? A cup of food depends on the cup (a cup is a cup)When food packages refer to a certain number of cups of kibble being appropriate for a certain body weight, they are referring to an actual measuring cup. This may seem obvious but many mugs, coffee cups, and other scooping cups may not be equal to a cup measure. The package guidelines are just guidelines Many packages of food include on their label a feeding schedule that indicates how much food should be fed to a pet of a certain weight. The problem is that each pet is an individual and these guidelines are meant as a starting point only. If your pet is too fat on the recommended feeding schedule, then you should reduce the amount of food or change to a diet less calorie dense so that a satisfying volume of food can still be eaten without adding calories. Some animals simply have the genes that predispose them to obesity. Dog breeds with genetic tendencies towards obesity include the: Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, Dachshund, Beagle, Shetland

Sheepdog, Boxer, Cairn Terrier, Basset Hound, Cairn Terrier, and Labrador Retriever. Some pets do not burn calories efficiently; they simply have a slow metabolism. This might be genetic as mentioned or it might be the result of a disease such as hypothyroidism or Cushing’s disease. Testing for health problems such as these is helpful to get the best treatment for resolution of the obesity. Pet treats are often high in calories and four or five treats readily converts into an extra meal’s worth of added fat. Free feeding of dry food encourages the pet to snack as well; meal feeding represents better calorie control. Spaying and neutering does not automatically cause weight gain but the procedure causes a change in the hormonal balance which typically slows metabolism, so your pets food regime should be adjusted after neutering What to do to help my pet in get to a healthy weight •

FREE

Feed a prescription diet made for weight loss (typically “lite” or “less active” diets are meant

to prevent weight gain, not actually cause weight loss). Your veterinarian has several choices to suit your pets needs. •

There must be control over what the obese pet eats. Free roaming/ having food out all day won’t be an option, feeding in meals makes it much easier to control the food intake and in multiple pet households pets should be fed separately.

Commit to regular weigh ins. Know what the goal weight is and how long it should take to reach this goal/or how to tell if the pet is on target.

Consider interactive toys that can be used when you are not home or where your own participation is minimal. With a cat, feeding in a few different places will make him search out food and move around.

A good start to obesity management is to consult your veterinarian to rule out any underlying health issues that might specifically cause obesity and they can help you set up healthy weight loss plan for your pet.

YOURstars

Your September Horoscopes Aries – March 21 to April 20 As usual, others are easily charmed by your warmth and sincere approach to the world and once again, a good mix of work and pleasure is in your forecast. The 5th - 7th are very strong for new beginnings in a sixth house pursuit, which can be about work, service, self-care, or health. Beautiful energy is with you for creating something new, moving a project forward, and for romance near the middle of September. Although for you Aries, it’s time you brought something new to your work methods or environment. The best approach in September would be the rational one. Taurus – Apr. 21 to May

21 September promises to be an active month, dear Taurus, and family members are demanding more attention and energy from you. Romance can come full bloom this month. The 5th - 7th brings great energy for communicating your intentions and for starting fresh. A commitment made to or with a partner can be part of the picture around the 18th. It may be time to take a relationship to a new level of responsibility. The Sun will be in Taurus’ house of eroticism until September 22nd 2013, so you can expect a richer love life, but also some opportunities to start a new affair, if you want to. September will bring success to Taurus – in relationships, career and personal accomplishments. Gemini – May 22 to June 21 Even though you have a lot to do and get done this month, dear Gemini, you are bound to be feeling especially domestic with the Sun and Mercury spending time in your family and home sector. You may already sense that changes are necessary on the home front, and around the 5th – 7th, new plans can emerge. Then your career or reputation hits a high note around the 19th. You are thrust into the spotlight and called

24

upon to perform. Work matters push forward around the 20th. Also, in Gemini’s house of love there will be some big fuss. You’ll be sexier, sweeter, more desirable, and it’ll seem that you fully enjoy the pleasures of the senses. Gemini thrives in September. Cancer – June 22 to July 22 A sociable and energetic month is in store, dear Cancer, with plenty of activity. You have big plans and plenty of fire in September, surprising those around you. You are feeling especially independent and spirited, and you receive an energetic boost from the cosmos that helps you to accomplish much from the 5th – 7th. Whatever is a priority to you, it’s a great time to tackle it now as you’ll be amazed at how much ground you can cover. However, a serious discussion may occur around the 18th. While it can renew your focus, it can also bring dissatisfaction to light in a relationship, particularly a romantic one. Later in the month Venus enters Cancer’s house of love, and ensures love prevails for Cancer. By the 28th the events of September have taken their toll on Cancer’s energy – it’s time to rest and regroup. Leo – July 23 to Aug 22 While energies are high all month, Leo, generally speaking, emotions settle in September up until the last week, when the pace quickens again. In September, an altercation or event may make you wonder if you have a guardian angel. Leo’s ability to see things realistically feels right and also empowering. Meeting www.iloverutland.com

YOURstars your responsibilities is important now. Work matters intensify from the 20th. While power struggles might emerge, you are feeling more equipped to handle problems than ever. Vitalizing trends in your life make September a strong month for Leo’s intense character, although with Mars in your sign all month, it’s also important that you avoid pushing too hard or too fast. Mars is also troublesome, rash and careless. Don’t take big risks Leo. Virgo – Aug 23 to Sept 23 September is your month for making an impression Virgo, but you are not necessarily ready to make your intentions known. That will come more naturally when Mars enters your sign in midOctober. While you may be feeling misunderstood at times, you are nevertheless getting noticed and appreciated, even if it’s simply admiration from afar. On the other hand, your intellectual qualities and the things you’ll say or write will stimulate the interest of the opposite sex. There can be a strong need to get organized with your money midmonth and some of you could be making an important purchase or commitment. Revelations in close partnerships could be either exciting

or rattling around the 18th – 19th. Either way, they prompt a desire to change your whole outlook on life and the way you relate to the world. You are ready to kick bad habits, start fresh, and present a more self-assured “you” to the world in September.

Scorpio - Oct 24 to Nov 22 A wonderful feeling of renewal is with you this month, Scorpio. The 5th – 7th is especially strong for your social life. Your personal projects begin to move forward and a sense of relief contributes to a hopeful mood, especially after the 20th. Venus in your sign from the 11th forward is a strengthening force for existing relationships and also for attracting what and who you want into your life. Romance blooms and creativity reaches a satisfying peak. As for the rest of September 2013, expect an interlude of great emotion and sensuality between the 17th and the 19th with a happy event in the last decanate. September is a magical, strengthening time for magnetic Scorpio.

Libra - Sept 24 to Oct 23 September can be a pleasant month if you take extra time to relax, listen to your intuition and avoid pushing matters, Libra. A lot is going on in the background, connections are being made and while at times life may seem as if it’s slowing down, it’s a good time for allowing things to emerge naturally. Venus in your sign until the 11th boosts your powers of attraction, so that your personal magnetism soars even while you are slightly unavailable and insular. Some of you will find your relationships experiencing extra passion, sentimental gestures will be more demonstrative and interaction is more enthusiastic. From the 22nd, ideally you have rid yourself of worries and guilt that have been holding you back, and you experience renewed confidence in September. You seem to intuitively know your next move, Libra!

Sagittarius - Nov 23 to Dec 21 September is a time to shine on a professional or public level, Sagittarius. The more responsible side of your nature is awakened, and others more easily place their faith in you. It’s a good time to go out there and reach for what you want; the 5th – 7th is excellent for moving projects ahead. Being in a position of responsibility or authority is something you place

YOURstars a high value on this month. Mars is helping you out all month and this means you can assert yourself naturally and confidently, and you can pursue your goals more directly, save for some potential obstacles on the 9th. You’ll be better than the previous month; even as September nears the end of the month, you’ll have more energy and feel it’s your time, which will improve your morale. But you shouldn’t neglect your health; Saturn can silently undermine that, Sagittarius, so take care of yourself, spare yourself and treat even the smallest indispositions seriously! Finish September positive and healthy, Sagittarius. Capricorn - Dec 22 to Jan 20 Capricorn could be entering a spirited month. You may be searching for more exciting or involving experiences now, but at the same time, your famous determination and perseverance are applied to goals and projects. While your appetite for adventure has taken over around the 5th – 7th, let caution prevail around the 10th – 12th, a reality check may be in order. Expect good mid-September, interesting reunions

and talks around the 19th and happy events nearing the end of the month. Sexual magnetism, enhanced in past years by Pluto’s stay in Capricorn, will reach maximum values in September 2013, due to Venus’ presence, the ruler of Capricorn’s house of eroticism, located in Scorpio. Saturn, Capricorn’s ruler, is located in Scorpio all throughout the year 2013; a very good time for Capricorn. Aquarius - Jan 21 to Feb 19 You can cover a lot of ground in your endeavors, personal and professional, this month Aquarius; you are more focused and willing to put in the effort. If a relationship can benefit from a new beginning, the 5th – 7th is the time for starting fresh. It’s also a good period for managing finances, work and research. Your close personal relationships can be fiery, demanding, and stimulating with Mars in your partnership all month. Nearer the middle of September, you may encounter an obstacle and a strong urge to fight back when your better bet is to choose your battles wisely. The lull you may have been experiencing in your career will start lifting as September nears the 29th. More importantly, you regain

the confidence to take charge and to move forward. Intuitive Aquarius can sense the changes coming their way in September. Pisces - Feb 20 to Mar 20 With Jupiter in Pisces’ house of love, between the summer of 2013 and the summer of 2014 an astrological context will form that will favor the appearance of a new passion in your life. Your close relationships with others come into strong focus in September with the Sun and Mercury in your partnership and intimacy sectors, Pisces. It’s a time for taking charge of your relationships. Even so, you’ll have more work to do come mid-October. This can also be a period for fresh starts or new beginnings in the relationship department. Personal charisma skyrockets around the 10th and then again on the 13th – 14th. Love and relationships are forefront for Pisces in September. Make an emotional declaration; don’t hold back if there is something you’ve been building up to. Love could find its way to you easily this month, Pisces, and your confidence and powers of seduction will not go unnoticed in September.

ANAF UNIT 376news

September Back to Regular Hours Lisa Simone I Love Rutland

It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of summer. Soon the Army Navy Air Force Unit 376 will be back to regular hours and busy events 7 days a week. Even with shorter summer hours, the Unit was busy all summer with various activities and outings; some of the August events are described below. Membership is building and the ANAF always welcomes new members and guests to visit and join in our activities. You do not need to be a veteran or have served in the military to join. However, you do need to respect our veterans to be a member. On Sunday, September 1st, the Unit 376 hosted a Celebration of Life for Betty Robinson, a long-time member of ANAF Unit 376. Betty will be missed and remembered by all. ANAF hosted a very fun and successful Family Picnic at Ben Lee Park on August 18th. This fun event was organized by Pat Calado along with her helpers - Fred Kammerer cooking burgers and hot dogs, Sandy McErlean, Rod Tompkins, Eldon Chase, Harley Stregger, Jackie D and Jean Bigler. Thank you to all that helped and supported this fun summer event. It was great to see so many families with young children at the picnic; it was a wonderful family www.iloverutland.com

event with enough activities to keep everyone busy and smiling. Another event this summer was when the ANAF Unit 376 joined with Bench I apartments to have a Garage-Yard Sale with a pancake breakfast and later burgers on the BBQ. Thank you to all who made this event successful. On September 13th there was a Big Western Night, where you could wear your western clothes including hats. This event included a pig roast and entertainment by the band Blaine Alexander f r o m Calgary. Signs are now posted up to register for the fall pool and dart leagues. T h e s e leagues are great social fun for all ages from 19 years to 119 years. New members welcome. In a few weeks you will see many of the members

of the Army Navy Air Force Unit 376 at the various malls around Rutland selling Poppies in support of November 11th Remembrance Day and the various programs for our veterans that have served our country over the years. Please help out and show your support with a generous donation and a thank you. These wonderful people volunteer to help others that need our support. Together, we can make a difference and change someone’s life. May we never forget!
