Firstwords who willingly open their doors, creating their own extended families.

Chase Jestley Publisher I Love Rutland

Throughout the year, all through our community, lives are always changed. When we look around at our neighbours, our friends and even total strangers, we can see the little things they do to help out each other, to make that little difference in someone else’s lives. There is the small few however, who really cross over and truly take the big chance, usually changing not only the lives of those they reach out to, but their own as well. These are the extended families… Those who open their homes, for whatever the reason, to (generally) complete strangers, and in the process change the lives of everyone involved. Now, for the young individuals who play amateur sports, this is a fact of life. We see it every day, all these kids really, who leave the comfort of their own homes to live with others so they have the opportunity to be better and to move forward with something they love. We regularly see it, whether it’s for the kids who play for the Okanagan Sun, for the Rockets or even the Chiefs, there is always a call out looking for good, caring, responsible host families to welcome these young folks into their homes for the season. And without a doubt, there are always those in our community

4

On the other side of the coin, we see those who open their doors for the youth in trouble or in need. Without a doubt, this has to be the hardest for everyone. Those who choose to extend their families through the foster care system face some of the stiffest opposition, be it from their neighbours or from the kids themselves. In the end however, it is the simple fact of taking that first step, looking past the faults and distrust that truly makes a difference in both their lives. It is said that the worst mistake you can make in a journalistic setting is to wear your heart on your sleeve – this being the month to remember and to be thankful for the sacrifices of others I feel it is appropriate, regardless. Myself, I was in neither of these situations. I came from an exceptionally small town, and after a certain age, it was necessary for me to also join the ranks of the billeted children in order to continue going to school (there was no schooling available after grade seven, and it was either necessary for my parents to move or for me to be billeted). For the next five years, I spent my time in five different homes, each time joining a new family, sharing with them the good times, the birthdays, the anniversaries, the truly family moments. And with each family I learned a little bit more about myself, as I know they learned more about themselves. Truly, there was the broad spectrum of people whose lives I entered, the banker, the police officer, the teacher, the craftsman, the nurse and

November 2013

of course their own children, both younger and older. In every instance, there were highs and lows. It is difficult to welcome someone new into the family when you have a family of your own, and of course it can breed resentment among the new “siblings”. But after my tenure in each of these instances, I again gained a new family, and new family members which I would hold in my heart for life. What is truly special, I do have one friend in our community whom I have known for the better part of my life. She too was billeted to continue her own schooling. Shortly afterward, I joined her family for a period of time. It is in my heart a different bond that is truly unlike the others – a kindred spirit. I recently had to attend the funeral of one of my “parents.” It truly showed how strong the love that is forever created by the extended family. For every family who opens their doors to bring in another individual, you are making a difference in someone else’s life. If it was for a sports season, a school year, or a life, that sharing is something that will be remembered by everyone.

50 YEARS MAKING A difference

OUT&about

Rutland Hospital Auxiliary Half a century on... November 22, 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of Rutland’s Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop. This is an event worth celebrating and a story worth telling, teh 50th Anniversary Celebration will be held at the store on Dougall Rd. commencing at 10:15. We hope to see all our supporters there!. Back in 1939 two Rutland women, members of the ladies hospital auxiliary, decided to do more to raise funds for the auxiliary and so they procured a small space in the basement of what most of us knew as the Corner Pin Inn, humble beginnings to be sure. Years later when the little shop had outgrown that space and later another rented from Rutland resident Mr. Whitehead, then located behind the current 7-11, the ladies auxiliary reached a milestone. They had raised enough funds to purchase their own building, a small house on Rutland Rd. across from Centennial Park, for a whopping $12,000. This was the official beginning of the “Rutland Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop” Years later the decision was made to build a larger store and the little house was torn down to make way for a new much larger, cinder block building. Rutland’s Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop would operate out of this location for decades to come. One more expansion with an add on to the back of the Rutland Rd. building was necessary to facilitate the little shop that could and was the home to Rutland’s thrift shop until the relocation to the current location on Dougall Rd. in 2005. Rutland Girl I Love Rutland

We have shared some of the history but it’s also important to touch on the day to day or in this case decade to decade operations and mission. At the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop there are no paid staff; the thrift shop is run 100% by volunteers which is not the case with all thrift shops. Not all thrift shops are charities and this is something that people should be aware of, particularly the residents of Rutland. When dropping off your used goods, please choose a charity that will be doing the most good with your donation as not all are created equal. Donating your used items is also a great way to help the environment, in its history this little shop has saved mountains of items from the landfill, which alone is a remarkable contribution to the community. The real success of the Rutland Hospital Auxiliary is in the volunteers, and today’s hospital auxiliary is still filled with that original good will and drive to help. On any given day there are 3 to 7 volunteers working in the store; it takes 55volunteers on staff at all time to keep up with the work load and yes, they are always looking for more help. The average volunteer at the hospital auxiliary is, as they say, “no spring chicken” and while they have recently been blessed with several volunteers in their 40’s and 50’s they would love to see some young people come out and volunteer. It can be a good way to get work experience, feel that community spirit and the company is always good. Plus, volunteering always looks good on a resume for those entering the work force. One of Rutland’s most well known community minded Rutland residents (a Rutland resident since 1951) is in fact a volunteer at the Hospital Auxiliary, none other than the ever modest, very hard working Ben Lee. Ben has been giving his time and energy to the thrift store for the past 10 or so years and his wife, who originally encouraged Ben to help out, has been there much longer. OK, encouraged might be a bit of a stretch, how Ben got started is a funny story and if you come to the 50th anniversary celebration, he may just share it with you.

OUT&about The amount of funds raised by the Thrift Store is staggering; the running total is over $3.5 million dollars and, of the $501,000 recently raised, $250,000 was used to purchase a defibrillator for Kelowna General Hospital as well as $223,150 to purchase 2 immunization analyzer systems. The bursaries donated yearly to two Rutland Senior Secondary students that enter studies in the health care field have increased from $50 at their inception to $1000 currently. They also provide support to the Kidney Dialysis Centre in Rutland. All thanks to the hard work of the volunteers and the support of the community through donations and of course shopping in the thrift store. We can all help the Rutland Hospital Auxiliary continue the good work by being conscientious of what we donate as well as how we do so. Please do not drop off items that are not on the list (sign) of items they do not take, such as couches, beds, recalled baby furniture and items that are not in a saleable condition. When dropping off your donations at the back of the store, please read the sign. Recently someone left an old couch behind the store which someone lit on fire; this item and act cost the store over $7,000 dollars which is a lot of donations and volunteer hours up in smoke so please drop your items off during business hours when they will not be rummaged through, dumped out or lit on fire, and let’s

It takes the efforts of many to ensure things run smoothly.

see if our community can keep this store raising funds for another 50 years. The accompanying photo is of Ben Lee and regular volunteers, Elaine and Loretta. We won’t give away their ages except to say their cumulative years of wisdom equals two hundred and seventy one. Congratulations on 50 years!

A Sh###y Trip

R

ecently, my partner and I were out and about doing some shopping, and, because it was a nice day, we were walking and enjoying the sunshine. Of course the only downfall, I had a case of the stomach flu.

Submitted I Love Rutland

We were headed down the hill near the Dairy Queen when I realized that my ‘mild’ case of the flu was a bit more serious than I thought. With all due haste, I ran, not walked into the lobby area only to find not only a line up for the facilities, but you had to be buzzed into the washroom. After frantically getting the attention of the poor girl who was stuck there briefly alone, I got her to buzz the door open and, through no small miracle, I managed to move myself to the front of the line and through the door. Of course, there were other occupants. One of them informed me that the elderly woman in the other stall was having some issues and she would have to find her husband to assist her, would I mind. No, not at all, I had more pressing issues on my mind.

Montezuma's Revenge

So while I am in the midst of a rather self-conscious moment, I also got to hear the gentleman helping his suffering wife use the facilities next to me… It was all I could do to leave the washroom as soon as possible, and hope no one had actually seen me (let’s not forget the line of people I had previously barged ahead of…).

would either get it over with or just go away. Now this being the world when absolutely everything is automated from the taps to the flusher, I wouldn’t have thought the lights would react the same way. Needless to say, again, in a most self-conscious moment, the lights went out.

With my remaining dignity, we carried on our trip only to make it to the vicinity of the Willow Park Mall when, as misfortune would have it, my flu bug struck again. Running into the McDonalds (again hoping no one would see me) I again ensconced myself into one of the stalls and hoped that whatever was trying to kill me

So, there I was, twice struck, now sitting in the dark, hoping I would be able to escape with some shred of my dignity… Guess I won’t be going back there any time soon… Only in Rutland.

INTHEcommunity

One Community Group Helps Another The YMCA of the Okanagan, or “The Y” as it is referred to, has a 32 year history in Rutland and is an organization and facility that the residents are very proud to have in the Rutland community. The programs and services encompass everything from youth career centres, summer day camps for children, seniors’ socials and fitness classes for everyone, pickle ball, yoga, swimming lessons for all ages, spin classes, fit for life, prenatal wellness and much more. The Y continues to grow and change to meet the needs of the community in its entirety; the current services and facility are a great example of the Y’s ability to evolve. The facility itself is beyond impressive; the pools, the gym, the indoor track. I could go on but I won’t. However, I will say that everyone should take the time to tour “The Y”. Wendi Swarbrick I Love Rutland

This state of the art facility did not build itself; it is the result of thousands of hours of hard work and dedication by a team of volunteers and organizations that worked tirelessly to raise the funds to make it what it is today. The Y relies on volunteers and all types of donors, individuals, organizations and businesses. One of the supporters of the YMCA is the Kelowna Rutland Lions Club. The fine work of the Lions Club can be seen all over Rutland and the greater Kelowna area, so to hear that the Lions Club had once again stepped up to provide a much needed donation was no surprise. It was brought to the attention of the Rutland Lions Club that the Y was in need of an AED, or defibrillator as it is known. The Lions Club came through with not one but two defibrillators. This donation is literally the gift that keeps on giving. Recently, a 19 year old Kelowna resident was working out in the gym and collapsed, not breathing. Doctors later determined that he was in fact technically dead. It has been said that the Y staff handled the situation incredibly, doing all the right things including having two of their life guards perform CPR and applying the AED with practiced precision and the best possible outcome. It was, of course, the first time they had ever used it. That young man has the rest of his life to live because that AED hanging on the wall at the Y was donated by an organization that helps its community, that gives, that really cares and when you bring the actions of two such organizations and its people together, lives are changed and sometimes lives go on to live another day ……….

About 650,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders (the province then still a colony of Britain) had served during the war, beginning in 1914. The last Canadian veteran of the conflict — John Babcock — died in February 2010 at the age of 109.

Decades have passed since World War I, World War II and the Korean War, but the sacrifices of our troops during these wars and subsequent conflicts around the world, most recently Afghanistan, have not been forgotten.

Roast Garlic in its skin until the skin is black and the cloves are soft. (I found about 10 or 15 minutes did the trick). Let cool. Remove skin. In a food processor or blender, combine roasted garlic, crumbled blue cheese, cream cheese, thyme, salt and pepper. Add enough olive oil to make mixture smooth. Transfer to a bowl. – You can do this by hand it’s just a bit chunkier Grill steaks so they are a bit undercooked – I used a seasoned cast iron pan Place in a baking dish and put a large dollop of mixture on each. Transfer to oven. Heat until mixture begins to melt, five or 10 minutes. – Those are the baking instructions – I broil them for slightly less time and they are fantastic! Serve immediately. A MATTER OF perspective

RUTLANDproud

Focus on the good

S

ome days it’s not easy to see the good in all things; everyone has those days, the glass isn’t always half full. Through the internet and our electronics we are constantly connected to social media, news updates, you name it, so we hear everything that goes on or so we think. If you put it in perspective, what we really hear is everything that is talked about or reported or complained about and, whether it’s your friend on Facebook, someone tweeting on twitter or the local reporter trying to grab a few headlines, what they are inevitably talking about is what they determine will garner the most attention at that moment. This is where perspective comes into play and that is one of those things that can easily get lost in our crazy busy day to day lives. Rutland Girl I Love Rutland

There’s too much focus on any bad thing that happens and not enough on the good. If we want to “stay positive” and keep our lives in “balance”, you know those catch phrases we all throw around when bi*@#^ng about things at the end of the day, we have to focus on the good that happens. Any long time Rutland resident knows what I’m talking about; if anything even close to criminal or negative happens in Rutland, it hits the news. If you take the time to look and to listen you will see and hear plenty of good. In Rutland the good things and good people far outnumber the bad but they just don’t garner the same sensationalism. The recent events at Halloween were a perfect example of that. A local resident had her Halloween display stolen from her front yard, it happens everywhere, but the real story was how her neighbors, friends and Rutland residents, some that had never met her showed up and set up a new display in her yard. Recently some local businesses had a very successful fundraiser for the Salvation Army Rutland Food bank and the businesses did a great job. For example, the guys from VCS, or as we know them “Straight out of Rutland”, sold their near famous T-shirts and donated all the proceeds to the food bank, awesome. Also, the donations made by the Rutland residents were incredible. On a smaller note, my friend’s car died in the middle of hwy 33 (she says it’s temperamental). Two young guys stopped and pushed her car into a parking lot, diagnosed the problem, went home and got a tool box and a small part she could not identify, fixed her car and had her on her way an hour later. All they would accept was her thanks. Rutland has actually had a stellar year with a lot of positive change. I bet many of you were not aware that of the

RUTLANDproud Kelowna neighbourhoods, Rutland ranked near the top for home sales. 243 family homes were sold in Rutland compared to 156 in Glenmore, what does that say? It says more and more people know that Rutland is a great place to live and raise a family. New businesses are opening up all the time but we could use a few more. I’ve also heard that many of the local businesses have noticed that the residents are frequenting their stores, shops and businesses more and more – could it be the new found support we are all feeling for our community? It seems to be. Unfortunately we have more work to do. Just last week I was in the bank, won’t say which one, and the teller asked me what my “Straight out of Rutland “ Shirt meant. I told him it was a message that we are sending out, that we are proud to be from Rutland! We are tired of the negative innuendos and insinuations; we want

people to know that good people come from Rutland. His reply was “I’ve never been there but I heard it was a ghetto.” The look on my face must have given away my thoughts because he was quick to reply that he wasn’t from here, it’s just what he had heard. I’m not one to end a story on a negative note so I’m not going to; all his comment did was strengthen my resolve to continue to support my community, to encourage others to work at it and in my opinion sooner rather than later, these type of comments will be a thing of the past. We’re getting close to the end of 2013 and we should all give ourselves a pat on the back; it’s been a great year for Rutland and we should all feel “Rutland Proud”.

WORDSOFwisdom My message is a simple one – if we want Rutland to truly feel like a community, we have to give back. It’s not the same as work, it’s helping out and belonging and we must get the young people involved. The young people are key to the community. My parents told me, get involved with your community and I have always followed their advice on this and now I’m passing it on to my community.

One Question, Two Answers... About a month ago I met this man that is so incredible. We have dated every weekend since we met. He is so good looking and funny and he makes me feel good about myself by always calling me beautiful.

don’t count on his answer to be factual, because how many cheaters are going to admit to it? Bring up why he only calls at night. Tell him it sounds funny to you. Let him know that you deserve to be with someone that wants to be with you on a regular basis and not someone that gets “penciled in.”

The trouble is, every time I call his cell phone, I always get his voice mail. He never returns any of my calls until late at night and then complains about how tired he is and hangs up telling me he will see me on Friday. I know he works for a law firm and that could be stressful, but does this sound funny to you?

I can’t say for sure what his issue is but I have to disagree, these are not the actions of a married man. For starters, married men “never” want to talk on the phone; they prefer e-mail or some untraceable messenger app. They generally have lots of time to talk during the day, but rarely in the evening and they are always busy or not available on weekends and holidays. How many married men do you know that do men’s night out on a Friday – not in the world I live in – ok maybe once a year on their birthday. How many times do you call a guy that doesn’t answer – never more than twice – after that the ball’s in his court and, in my opinion, that’s one call too many. He Said: Wow… Did you think you were dating someone who WASN’T married? I understand it can be hard to find someone who you can truly trust and spend your time with, but really? When did the red flags go up? To call only at night sounds very funny. It sounds as if he has to wait for his little lady at home and possibly his children to fall asleep first before calling you. He may even have a “guy’s night out” on Friday and this is how he gets out of the house. You could always boldly ask him if he is married but

Demistifying Pet Food Labels

W

e get asked every day, “What is the best food to buy for my pet?” The short answer… The one that suites your pets nutritional requirements. Every Dr. Irene Mul dog and cat has Doctor of Veterinary Medicine individual nutritional Okanagan Veterinary Hospital requirements depending on their age (puppies requirements are much different than seniors), breed (some breeds have a predisposition to certain diseases), size, activity levels, wellness or medical conditions. Pet food is the biggest expense incurred in owning a pet. All of these criteria should be considered before you purchase a can or bag of pet food. Some of the information you need to make this decision should be on the label. If your questions cannot be answered by the label there should be a manufactures phone or e-mail. Most companies have whole departments for answering your nutritional questions. Keep in mind most companies can only answer questions about their own food. All pet food companies are required to give you a Product Name, species name (“dog or cat”) Guaranteed analysis, Ingredient list, purpose statement (puppy, adult), feeding direction and their name and contact info. Some labels show an AAFCO emblem. This organization sets minimum standards for food in two ways, formulation or feeding trials. Feeding trials are

20

November 2013

known as the “gold standard” and are more expensive for manufacturers to do. Some companies don’t do them for that reason. These trials document how an animal will perform when fed a specific food. The label will say Animal testing using AAFCO standards. Common terms that we all see on labels can be very misleading. The term “Organic” and “Natural” are not interchangeable. Organic has to be certified organic under certain standards that are the same as human organic under USDA or FDA label claims. Natural only pertains to ingredients that have not been chemically altered. There are no legal definitions for “Holistic” or “human grade”, and any manufacturer can make these claims regardless of content. Many people have concerns about the term “By- Product” and don’t know what by-products are. These refer to ingredients that derived as a result of the production of another product. For example: If a plant is processing chicken breasts and thighs for the day, any other parts including wings will be a by-product. By-products are common ingredients in human and animal food. Chicken wings, necks and backs, chicken stock, organ meats that are highly nutritious such as liver, kidney, and heart, gelatin, beef bouillon are only a few. Almost all pet foods contain some by-product in one form or another. It may not be listed as the first ingredient so it won’t get your attention as quickly. When a label lists chicken as the first ingredient that is going to include all the water in that chicken. That needs to be considered in the nutritional analysis of what you are feeding. Any ingredient must be cooked and processed to be made into a kibble or canned so a concentrate such as chicken meal, lamb meal or chicken by-product meal may carry more nutrients per gram or ounce than an ingredient listed chicken, or lamb. www.iloverutland.com

YOURpets Protein can come from other sources as well. The digestive system needs a balance of amino acids which can come from corn, or grain. Dogs and cats have daily requirements of nutrients not ingredients and these nutrients can come from all kinds of sources. “Corn and Grain” have been given a lot of bad press in the pet world lately but in fact they are rich sources of protein, vitamins A and E, amino acids, omega 6 fatty acids, antioxidants and a great source of energy. All complete pet foods must contain a carbohydrate. This contains fiber, starch and sugar. Some companies will use potatoes, rice or peas for this. Also added are fats that provide energy, essential fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K) that are vital for body functions. One thing that is important in all the ingredients is the source the manufacturer buys from. Are the suppliers selling a safe, reliable and consistent product to the manufacturer? Only the manufacturer can answer and check that. That is a question for you to ask them and how they analyze what is put in their food. A consistent quality control system should be in place in and out of the plant. The label should also show you the amount of calories in each cup or can, if it doesn’t this can be an indication that the food is not the same formula from

Take the time to quickly read the label. Your pet will thank you for it.

batch to batch. In conclusion, please ask for advice from individuals that are knowledgeable about nutrition for the life stage and medical condition of you pet. Nutrition has its own specialty in veterinary medicine. It is complex and constantly changing with new research. These recommendations should be based on science and education with the pet’s best interest at heart. We all want our pets to live forever and be healthy as long as they can. Nutrition is a huge factor in living long, active, healthy lives.

Your November Horoscopes Some Insight Into Why You Are Who You Are Aries - Aries live life head first; after all, those horns on your head are not just for fighting. Your headstrong nature can make you a "battering ram" and woe is the person who stands in your way. Aries in love must learn that ready or not, when its decision time, you have to be willing to go all in or let go, you can’t have it both ways. Aries will not tolerate jealousy in a relationship, Aries must have the freedom to do their own thing and usually believe their way is the best. Taurus - Taurus isn't necessarily like a Bull in a ring with a toreador. You could be more like peaceloving Ferdinand, seeking the gentle meadows filled with flowers, sunshine and natural beauty. It's only Taurus stubbornness that can make you angry enough to charge at someone who is disturbing your peace. Taurus in love, your heart longs for someone who’s willing to take the long road with you to explore the world. You have to let them in and start talking even when

24

you find it difficult, you can’t love who you don’t know. Gemini - Life should be exciting, inspiring, Gemini goes everywhere together, hand-in-hand, symbolizing your dual nature. Our world comes in pairs: good and evil, male and female, in and out, yin and yang -- and you Gemini’s are living proof. Some might say Gemini is an entanglement of paradoxes, but the truth is that Gemini has an easy acceptance of opposites. Gemini world is one of duality. Gemini can like this and that, one thing and it’s opposite. It's like you see your world through a radio and Gemini can tune experiences and points of view in and out as your interests change. Gemini in love has an erotic side they must share but it can be too taboo for some, they need an equal match. A match as stimulating and passionate as they can be but more singularly centered to offset their dual nature.. Cancer - Life is taking twists and turns no Crabs live in the inter-tidal zone of the oceans, where tides rise and fall twice every day. This is the most dynamic and changeful place on earth, but also the most nutrient rich. Because of the constant change, Cancer has developed a

hard outer shell for protection. Cancer can use the hard outer shell of your home as your protection. But it's more than just that. Typically, your sensitive Cancer can hold your feelings quietly behind your own walls. Cancer in love is complex, tough outside but emotional and sensitive inside and very nurturing. Cancer can be one of the most caring and giving partners of the zodiac. Leo - The Lion is considered the king of the jungle, and likewise you Leos have an air of royalty about you. Some Leos even have hair resembling the thick mane of the Lion. But Lions are more than roar, for they are truly magnificent beasts. The Lioness proudly cares for the young, hunts and takes care of survival with relentless intent and ferocity, when needed. And proud are you Leo! Perhaps that's why Leo often chooses work that puts you in the center of stage or in the spotlight of appreciation. Leo in love can be hot hot hot if they put their King sized ego aside, confidence is good but ego can be a negative, learn to keep your egos under control and let your relationships flourish smoothly www.iloverutland.com

YOURstars you can transition your views on love. Virgo - The Virgo is highly discriminating, but not necessarily as prudish at some might believe. In ancient times, a Virgin was a woman who was not the property of man, and therefore had the legal right to just say "no." Now, in modern times, you Virgos are known for your ability to be highly discriminating -especially when it comes to matters of personal desire. When Virgo is ready, however, to say yes, the laserlike focus of your passion is anything but prudish. Virgo needs a partner that stimulates their mind and body in order to love. Virgo commands with authority and clarity, making themselves attractive to many on a mental level, they need a partner that fits into their inner world but once a Virgo loves you, sit back and bask in the warm sunshine of their nature.. Libra - Libra is the only zodiac symbol that's neither animal nor human -but surely that doesn't make you any less human. In fact, Libra is among the most sociable of the signs. As scales of old were really "balances," so too do you seek balance in all that Libra does. You respond to situations with grace as Libra attempts to put others at ease. Artistically, Libra tries to balance form, content, colors and elements, and for this reason can be drawn toward creative endeavors. Libra takes their time to learn the ropes when it comes to love www.iloverutland.com

and relationships, but ultimately they need a deep, truthful love with profound meaning. Libra is charming and sweet yet fiercely independent. The seasoned Libra won’t let one sided love affairs be an option. Scorpio - The Scorpion is one intense little creature, with enough poison in its own tail to disable or kill a much larger opponent. But the problem with this kind of built-in biological weaponry is that it must be mastered in order to be used most effectively. You Scorpios can use your "stinger" for self-defense, using your powerful emotional awareness to render your opponent harmless. But there is a sexual component of poisonous tail also, and until Scorpio learns to control those strong urges, Scorpio may end up in uncomfortable situations. Scorpio in love is very much all or nothing, no half measures here. Love for Scorpio is blood red passion ruled by a fierce single mindedness with an intensity that is unnerving to a more sedate sign. Scorpio must have a self assured partner to take on their seductive complexity. Sagittarius - The Sagittarius is really a centaur -- the lower half is horse, the upper half is a man. The man is holding a bow with an arrow aimed upwards toward the sky. This symbolizes the Sagittarius' drive to overcome basic animal instincts by aiming his thoughts into the

divine realms of the heavens. In other words, Sagittarius is hunting for ideas and experiences that draw you into greater awareness. As such, Sagittarius tends to love adventure, travel and philosophy -- all ways of extending beyond your immediate surroundings. Sagittarius feels love is yet another adventure, outspoken and impulsive, yet a romantic and uncomplicated sign. You are genuine and transparent by nature, Sagittarius is very easy to love and appreciates a brilliant mind as much as an adventurous spirit. Capricorn - The sure-footed Mountain Goat can climb to higher altitudes than any other mammal. And you sure-footed Capricorns are also well-suited for climbing. Capricorn sets high goals for yourself and then you overcome whatever obstacles may appear between you and the top of your personal mountain. As Capricorn climbs the ladder of success, your ambition pushes you forward. Status can be important to Capricorn and often, at the top of your game, you gain personal satisfaction by knowing that others respect you for what you have accomplished. Capricorn in love must be cautious and not wear their heart on their sleeve. They must take the time to know where they stand. Although a very traditional sign in many aspects, Capricorn will increase in sensuality as they age and are known for their very strong libido. Capricorns make the most devoted lovers in the zodiac. Aquarius - The symbol for Aquarius is the Water-Bearer, a universal man

November 2013

YOURstars who is pouring forth water from a jug. This universal man represents the community of mankind. The waters of life flow, like ideas coming from the unrestrained mind. Many people mistakenly think that Aquarius is a water sign, but it is an intellectual air sign. As such, Aquarius can be interested in concepts and ideas. Aquarius can seem somewhat detached from personal emotions. It's not that you Aquarius don't have feelings; it's just that yours are different from most others.

You dance to the beat of a different drummer. Aquarius in love needs to roam unhindered in the freedom of ideas and intellect of a like minded partner. More intellectual than most and never superficial, a need to be different rules the Aquarian, especially in love matters. Expect an unconventional and erotic lover. Pisces - Fish appear to be individuals, but have you ever seen a school of them swimming together? They act as one. Each is part of a greater whole. And you Pisces Fish are more aware of your interdependency than any other sign. It's as if Pisces live in an ocean and the spirit that flows through you is like the one ocean that flows through all fishes.

OASIS

The symbol of the Fish is also the symbol of Christianity, t h e predominant religion during the past two thousand years -- also known to astrologers as the "Age of Pisces." Pisces in love can be very old fashioned yet wildly imaginative as lovers. Pisceans will put themselves in your shoes and are known for their perspective and deeply sensitive nature. While not known to be the most faithful sign in the zodiac their soft nature does make them one of the most forgiving.

Thanksgiving dinners were served on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct 14 by a host of donors and volunteers from across Rutland and beyond. Most of the turkey, dressing, gravy, buns, coleslaw, potatoes, carrots and apple pie dessert were all donated by the community. The Salvation Army kitchen under the direction of Sonia Wither cooked, cut and delivered the donated turkeys. “..the best tasting turkey ever!” said one. “I got two helpings of turkey dinner, then went back for two servings of apple pie” declared a very happy-looking teen. The host church was Rutland United but the event was made possible by the participation of a number of local churches and parachurch organizations. Mainstreet Church pastor, Shonu Ghosh combined with Garret Taylor, head chef at Freedom’s Door to oversee a

delicious, hot meal for all the diners. Other involved churches were Faith Lutheran, Mennonite and Rutland Adventist. Many thanks especially to Garry and Linda Groff, and Faye MaCaulay. It is hoped that the Thanksgiving dinner can become an annual Rutland event.

November Trivia November comes from the Latin word novem which means nine. It was originally the ninth month of the year in the Roman calendar which began with March. When January and February were added to the Roman calendar, November became the eleventh month of the Gregorian calendar. November is one of the four months that has thirty days.

C. Dnaltur I Love Rutland

Many major events happened in the month of November. Here are four well known historical events that took place in November. President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. The end of World War I or Armistice Day was November 11, 1918. President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national www.iloverutland.com

holiday in November 1863. President Lincoln made the Gettysburg address in November of 1863. Its birth flower is the chrysanthemum. November starts on the same day of the week as March every year. In the United States and Canada, it is National Beard Month or Movember. Australians have a similar month were they grow a mustache instead of a full beard. In Finland they call November 'marraskuu' which translates as 'month of the dead' November is the eleventh month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and has 30 days. November in the Southern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of May in the Northern Hemisphere.
