THINGS ARE HEATING UP Figuratively and literally, we’ve been living through quite the heat wave here in the Okanagan. It feels like it’s been a long hot summer and summer has just begun. I must say I haven’t’ heard too much grumbling about the heat though, yes, there are those few that it’s always to hot, too cold, too something for, but most of us seem to be taking it in stride and enjoying it for what it is. Let’s face it, winter will be here before we know and we will have no choice but to suffer through that – you know those long brutal days on Big White or Snow Shoeing at McCullough, Snowmobiling up Gray Stokes – damn winter in the Okanagan – ha ha. For now it’s sun, sun and more beautiful sun! Gardens are well ahead of where they usually are for mid-July and the lakes are so warm and inviting, especially my personal favourite lake, the incredible almost surreal Kalamalka Lake. It truly doesn’t get any better than cruising around Kal Lake searching for the ultimate emerald green or turquoise blue pool to jump in. I pity anyone that has never had the chance to swim in that lake, legends say it has healing properties and this I believe. Unfortunately with all this heat comes forest fires and boy are we burning this year; just watch the news

headlines – “BC is Burning”! While many of these fires can’t be avoided, with heat comes summer storms and unfortunately lightning strikes but far too many of these fires are human caused. I’m just going to say it – how stupid do you have to be to throw a lit cigarette out the car window when our province is this dry!! Yes, I know a mystery for the ages. On a lighter note, The Rutland Park Society applied for a Federal grant to be used to make the new children’s playground at Centennial Park handicap accessible and on July 8th our MP Ron Cannan, alongside Mayor Colin Basran and Minister of Transport Lisa Raitt; made the announcement that we had been awarded the grant. Great news for Rutland or should I say more great news for Rutland. When the park is finished and from what I’ve seen, it is going to be an exceptional park, we will have the most modern children’s play ground in Kelowna, accessible to all. Centennial Park will be a spectacular addition to our Rutland Dow n t ow n core and I for

POST-MILLENIAL with GENERATION

Condoms - Why Are We Still Having This Conversation? On May 28th of 2015, Castanet. net, released an online news article discussing the possible selection of local Secondary Schools to take part in a three month pilot project. This potential s t u d y has been proposed by Interior Health (I.H.) primarily in hopes of providing accurate information regarding sexual intercourse, transmittable diseases or infections, teen pregnancy, appropriate contraceptives, and available help and support to youth but, also to increase the distribution and availability of condoms to youth. The project will be the first in British Columbia and if successful (I.H.) has intentions to implement it into numerous schools and eventually integrate or include the services in the standard sexual education curriculum. To the portion of Kelowna’s parental population that I’ve had the pleasure of discussing this topic with, the idea is welcomed and expressed as a positive potential addition to the sexual educational system. Even those slightly hesitant, thinking about their not so young “young” with a pocket full of condoms seemed to feel it was still an overall positive, and an appropriate use of taxpayers’ dollars for a change. However some parents were far from in agreeance, and with a rather negative view on the matter. One individual in particular felt very strongly against the idea saying in a hostile tone “It is blatant encouragement to engage in sexual experimenting at a young age, and every kid with a condom thinks its bullet proof. It is encouraging pregnancy and S.T.D.’s” I could somewhat understand the man’s perspective but I knew that over all his concerns and beliefs were misguided. 6 JULY 2015 │ www.iloverutland.com

In fact research shows the promotion and distribution of condoms to adolescents does not result in earlier or more frequent sexual activity. Studies have shown that condom distribution programs can significantly increase condom usage among already sexually active teens, and result in considerable annual savings associated with medical costs regarding S.T.D.’s and un-expected pregnancies. Furthermore, statistics published by Interior Health Canada show clearly that in 2009/2010 30% of teens aging 15-17, and 68% of teens aging 18-19 reported having had sexual intercourse. In comparison with those statistics that same year, 35% of the sexually active 15-17 year old population reported having had sex with multiple partners. A consensus 5% higher than that of the 20-24 year old population. All that being said, as a lifelong resident of Kelowna, and a student of School District 23 the fact that these statistics are five years old and we are only considering implementing such a program now is concerning. The possibility of such factures taking care of themselves in the previous years is painfully unrealistic in a consistently growing population such as Kelowna. The part of this entire discussion that truly boggles the mind is that we are still discussing this and in fact doing more studies to determine the benefits of providing youth with accurate information, education and resources on sexual health. These issues whether they be moral, financial, health etc. have been studied, reported on, debated and discussed for decades. This is 2015, have we not beaten this dead horse to death for long enough!!

STRAIGHT OUTTA RUTLAND Things are really happening in Rutland and a large part of the positive growth and renewed energy in our community comes from the local businesses and the owners themselves. People that live, work and play right here; what happens here matters and they’re willing to step up and make it happen. One of those businesses has quietly been making Rutland a better place to live and helping a lot of folks in the process. An unlikely story to be sure – a couple friends got together to come up with a birthday gift for a friend, a unique gift for a slightly out of the box individual. What they came up with is what we all know as the “Straight Outta Rutland” phenomenon. Inspired by the Straight Outta Compton cult, it fit our Rutland character to a T! Dale Martell and Greg Greenough are the owners of VCS or Valley Contract Screen-printing located on Leathead Rd., the masterminds behind the scenes. The “Straight Outta Rutland” craze has travelled much farther and had a far bigger impact than Dale or Greg ever imagined, what started out as a birthday gift has become a Rutland legacy and an incredible fund raising tool for various charities and numerous individuals in need. This fall, I Love Rutland will once again partner with Cooper’s Foods, VCS & WS Accounting Services to put on our 3rd annual Fill the Shelves Food Drive for the Salvation Army Food Bank in the Rutland Community Life Centre. To date we have raised approximately $16,000, all of which stays in Rutland. The boys from VCS are there every year, selling t-shirt and raising funds. They donate 100% of their proceeds to the event. This is not unusual for them, they also printed over 40,000 Firestorm t-shirts after the big fire in 2003, raising $396,000 for the Okanagan Mountain Park Relief Fund and in doing so received an official letter of appreciation from the Kelowna Fire Department, they’ve raised close to $30,000 for a fund raiser put on after a tragic snow mobile accident, they have raised money for literally dozens of private fundraiser for people and families battling cancer and other tragedies, donated hundreds of shirts,

Even Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran proudly wears Straight Outta Rutland gear.

hoodies and gear for silent auctions. Virtually all money made on the proceeds of Straight Outta Rutland clothes and accessories are given back to the community in some way. That’s one side of the coin – the other side is the Rutland Pride part of it. Greg and Dale have received pictures from Rutland residents while all over the world. Proud Rutlanders sporting their “Straight Outta Rutland” shirts, hats and gear not only in Canada but as far away as Africa, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, India, China, Cuba, Mexico, to name a few, a restaurant in Malta in the Mediterranean proudly displays Straight Outta Rutland shirts on the wall. VCS, one of many great Rutland businesses, hardworking – they can print up to 1500 shirts a day, creative – amazing in shop art work – if you have an idea, these guys can print it on a shirt or any textile. Giving - in true Rutland spirit, giving back to the community, people just like you and I, making a difference.

FOOD & WINE PAIRING THE EASY WAY Pairing wine to the food you prepare shouldn’t be intimidating. It takes a little knowledge of body and flavour and the courage to experiment. It also takes pluck to ignore what the experts tell you and choose what you most enjoy. People who love to cook very often have a specialty dish. It could be a fiery pot of chilli served during the week or roasted breast of duck reserved for a special occasion. Whatever the food, you will be surprised how easily any dish can be brought to a new level when a well-chosen wine complements the meal. Pair a delicate fish or tender white meat with the bold flavour of a dry Riesling. Or try a Rosé and add aromatic cloves of garlic and caramelized onions into the mix. Do you love salmon or grilled turkey? Lean towards a substantial white wine such as a Chardonnay or Pinot Gris. Hearty beef ribs are delicious when Cabernet Sauvignon is added to the roasting pan, then served alongside. My go to BBQ wine is Marechal Foch – the earthy flavours go perfect with that medium rare steak. Gewürztraminer drizzled over fresh BC poached pears is a wonderful finish to any meal. Choose a Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc to complement lightly seasoned prawns, grilled vegetables, chicken or pork. Finding your wine tastes flat or metallic when you dig into a curry? Try a wine with a sweetness code of 2 or more. This works because the sweetness in the wine complements the spice, coating your mouth in a delicious combination of flavours. Tomatoes, vinaigrette dressings and other acidic foods are some of the trickiest flavours to pair. Matching these foods to the acidity of the wine is worth considering. A lot of times we think first about the meat, and match the wine to that. For example with chilli, people pull out a dry red. That is not always the best bet, as the tomato sauce is actually the primary ingredient in the dish. So you need to balance the high acidity of the tomatoes with the wine you are serving. One way to do this is to pair chilli with a sweet white – seriously, try it and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. A fresh and tangy Gewürztraminer, a sweet Riesling or a sweet blended white can bring just the right ingredient to the table. Don’t forget to pour a generous splash into the pot while the chilli simmers! Fortunately for chefs and wine lovers alike, rules are meant to be broken. Red wine served with roast turkey, instead of a classic white, is just one example. Pinot Noir and Merlot will go down well with chops, burgers and poultry; however a bold Rosé also does the trick. Keep in mind food and wine should be fun. In the end it all comes down to the personal preferences of you and your guests. And the best way to determine those preferences is to

spend a day touring some of the wineries here in the valley. Like chefs, each wine maker has their own way of doing things, so it’s unlikely you’ll find an identical Chardonnay or Foch. And, of course, each winery produces only some of the many varieties of wines available. Then, take two completely different wines, pour half a glass of each and try them individually with your signature dish. See how they taste, and make a note of that on the food recipe for use in the future. Or invite friends over, tell them each to bring a wine, and pour 3 or 4 half glasses for your tasting. You’ll be surprised how different wines can change the flavour of food. Bon Appétit and Cheers to good food, good company, and great wine. Aura Rose is the winemaker at House of Rose Winery, located at 2270 Garner Road here in Rutland. The winery holds several events in the summer, including free music in the vineyard every Thursday evening. See www.houseofrose.ca/ events for more info.

for a Sizzling Summer Adam Holmes Special to I Love Rutland

Summer in the Okanagan! As any local will attest, keeping cool in this sweltering heat is a must! So whatever your stay cool style may be - lounging in the air conditioning, running through the sprinkler, jumping in the lake, or floating down the channel - a visit to Atlantis Water Slides in Vernon is a must! The nostalgia of entering a water park for the first time is not lost on those who have experienced its wonders and there’s never been a better time to enjoy a slip sliding ride at Atlantis Water Slides. With 10 water slides, there’s something for everyone. From the daring to the not so daring, it ranges from double trouble to kiddie slides. For those who would rather have a slightly slower water slide adventure, try Atlantis’ tube ride - this allows multiple riders to ride at the same time which can be great family fun. The enjoyment doesn’t end where the water stops, though; you can opt to stay dry while having fun in the kids’ zone. Robert Barone, the owner and operator of Atlantis Waterslides, is excited to introduce the new “Atlantis Kids Zone.” Built by Orca Coast Playgrounds, a world leader in playground designs and engineering, the Kids Zone provides an alternative for children hesitant to enter the water, or those who prefer to get wet one toe at a time. As noted by Barone, “It’s nice for families to have an option, as there can be a child in the family who might have a fear of water or possibly water sensitive skin. It’s designed to be so much fun that the water-friendly kids will also want a turn at it.” Clearly, everyone is welcome at Atlantis Waterslides! At Atlantis there’s fun to be had in every direction. Amenities include an Ice Cream Parlor, a Concession Stand, private Cabanas where mom and dad can chill while keeping an eye on the kids, a large hot tub, Miniature Golf, a Gift Shop and more. With a top notch safety record and lots of new amenities, Atlantis Water Slides is a must do for summer fun! Vernon’s Atlantis Waterslide is located at 7921 Greenhow Rd. Upcoming events are listed on the website - www.atlantiswaterslides.ca – check us out!

IF IT’S ON THE INTERNET... IT MUST BE TRUE It is a bit like Old Yeller out there. On Facebook I mean, and social media in general. It started out well enough. Getting to see cute posts, photos of family, keep in touch with all sorts of people and participate in groups! Yay! Ah, such fun. But like many things, including lovely, unvaccinated yellow dogs, we seem to have a tiny problem. Facebook appears to have developed rabies. And it is running rampant, passed on in posts that promote hated and fear, intolerance and increased ignorance. Take Islamophobia for example. Can you think of any better way for extremists to succeed than by having millions of people post messages of hatred and intolerance that prove their point that the non-believers must be exterminated? Oh, well done. Would not surprise me in the least to find out that most of the hate and fear inducing things originate from the extremists groups themselves. After all, what better way to recruit than have the very people you hate do your promoting for you? And like the fearful Chicken Little we all run about with our wings a-flapping, terrified the sky is falling and making the entire situation significantly worse, especially for the majority of Muslims who frankly don’t have any use for the extremists either. Get my drift? Somewhere there is an Islamic terror group, geek division, tapping their fingers together gleefully saying “Oh goodness! Look how they are falling for it! Now ALL the Muslim people will join our cause, now that they see how much the infidels hate us!” Criminy. You have heard the term “playing into their hands,” yes? The myriad of angles the entire Islamophobia issue brings up would fill volumes, and I am not here to argue

Nicole Dumontier

the rhetoric of religion. I am, as we all are, horrified and angered by what has been happening in the world. I will say, however, that the posts that bug me most are the ones angled towards, “If you don’t want to abide by Canadian Law, git out!” Such short, convenient memories the masses have. I had coffee the other day, with a First Nations friend, who can clearly recall what it was like to be taken from her family, forced to forsake her language and culture, and beaten if she dared mention any aspect of her own people’s religion. Forced, really, to abide by Christian faith, rather than the one her people had in place for centuries on this very land. What is done is done, but let’s not forget the past couple of centuries of change, murder, theft and devastation that occurred so recently on this continent. Somehow we have once again managed to gloss over the centuries of harm, murder and degradation the Christian faith as perpetrated to masses of people. I don’t know of any faiths, except perhaps Buddhism, that have not committed atrocities at some point or another. But again, I digress. Because my point, and I do have one, is this: Facebook has become a bit rabid, and it is being passed on quickly to many of its members. Our outlook, our morality, out so-called patriotism, all are being affected. Funny thing, that social media creature. We entered into the age of the Internet a couple of decades ago. The original intent, I think, was to make information available to all at the touch of a keypad, to bring us closer together, to create better understanding. We can see what is going on anywhere in the world at any given time. But here is the rub: who do you believe? There are lot of decent, reputable news and information agencies out there providing, as best they can, balanced, thoughtful, informative parcels of information so we can use our powers of rational thought to come to informed, intelligent conclusions. Of course, new information is always forthcoming, and even the best of the best can be misled or given false information. And we will not always agree.

Like our weather, the market in Rutland has been hot! June saw 35 single family homes sell for 97.5% of the asking price with an average sale price of $392,000. And they are going fast with 18 of those homes selling in less than 25 days! With affordable home prices and all our community has to offer it is no surprise so many choose to call Rutland home. If you have been thinking of selling, contact me for a complimentary market evaluation. Statistics provided by OMREB

But then there are the scary ones. The (and I simply cannot call them journalistic) outlets that promote hatred, fear, uncertainty and paranoia. Or just plain stupid shite. If I tried hard enough, argued strenuously enough, perhaps

OFF THE FARM

enhanced a few photos and quoted enough “sources,” I imagine I could convince you all that the real culprits of all war, terror, environmental degradation, social collapse and every other evil out there, are all courtesy of a secret society of people that few of us are aware of yet, led and masterminded by none other than the nefarious, impossible to kill, Grigori Rasputin. Sound far-fetched? Perhaps, but not nearly as far-fetched as some of the tripe I see out there. And I am not just talking about extremist groups now. I am talking about a lot of the stuff that is floating around out there like mines in the cyber-ocean. I swear to the Goddess if I see one more post about Michelle Obama really being a trans-sexual man I think I might scream. Because number one, I think it is idiotic, and number two, and more importantly, if she really is a transsexual man, I don’t care. Again… I digress. And the even scarier part is that there are people who BELIEVE some of this stuff. Because they have proof you know. Verifiable facts. Facts become facts based solely on getting people to believe them. Or are they more like an opinion?

example, the troubles in the Gaza Strip, from a Facebook post, short article, or even a long article, because it, like a great many situations facing our world, is a long and convoluted mess of issues that frankly take a lot of time and study to understand. But don’t let that stop you. By all means, hop on board, push share, click that link and promote hatred, fear, ignorance and intolerance. Play into the hands of terror and prejudice. Because that is your right. As a Canadian. Or, here is a thought: colour me crazy, BUT… what if we stop with the relentless promotion of rabid negativity? Unlike with Old Yeller, social media cyber-rabies cannot be dealt with using a bullet. But perhaps we can find a way to decrease the spread. I am not saying stop reading. On the contrary, I am saying read more. From a variety of sources. And then read more. And more. And while you read, remember. Remember the past. Remember it clearly and without ego. Remember it with clarity and, as best you can, with humility. Remember the good stuff, and remember the bad. Because guess what folks? We are all in this together.

Everyone has one, after all. Take this column. This is what you call an “opinion piece” which gives me the ability to vent and express my opinion freely. A news piece, as a journalist is taught in their first year, must, to the best of the writer’s ability, contain the who, what, when, where, why, as well as the various sides of each story. Your opinion, no matter what the issue, should not leak through.

CANNIBIS IS CANADA READY FOR LEGALIZATION? Adam Holmes Special to I Love Rutland

In recent months, a lot has been said about the use of Marijuana for medical and recreational purposes. Opinions and medical views vary widely and we wanted to share some of the opinions that have been expressed to us. This issue of I Love Rutland as well as the next two upcoming issues - October and December 2015; will feature an article on Marijuana use, one person’s view on the pros, the cons and everything in between.

CRAZE During the past few years, much has been said about the possible legalization of cannabis within Canada, and debate on either side of the issue remains heavy with heated argumentation. Those who have argued in favour of legalization project possible increases in tax gains, a reduction of organized crime, and that further research will detail medicinal outcomes deserving of repeated examination for its healing properties. Alternatively, those who feel the substance is more harmful than helpful suggest that marijuana regulation will lead to impaired mental faculties, prompt possible criminal activity, and ultimately has the likelihood of lifelong addiction for users. Broaching these arguments from both sides calls attention to the fact that much work is required before coming to a conclusion, but on a fundamental level, should the decision to use cannabis, recreationally or not, be left up to the individual? From a historical perspective when, considering medicinal practices, the use of cannabis as a medical substance in the modern era began during the 19th century where its preparations and applications were used in the treatment of muscle spasms and convolutions. By the 20th century, the medicinal use of cannabis decreased due to the unreliability of results capable of being measured, often where each individual case produced various outcomes, though none specifically formed a pattern. Even within the 21st century a centralized assertion surrounding medicinal cannabis use maintains that there is no clinical evidence to suggest that it is safe or effective when treating patients.

CANNIBIS CRAZE

IS CANNIBIS HYPE OR HOPE? Outside of the general argument that medicinal marijuana use provides no tangible outcome, individuals who claim that consistent use of cannabis has drastically improved their lives repeatedly moves to the forefront of recent debate. Often assumed that smoking was the only manner of using marijuana, many medicinal users choose to ingest cannabis in the forms of pills, baked goods, or various applications of cannabis oil, each route less likely to cause respiratory problems. When it comes down to the reasoning regarding how cannabis is helping those who claim that few other medicines are capable of providing the same relief, the personal ailments often listed consist of nausea, physical pain, tumor control, and in more recent cases have claimed to treat ailments such as Crohn’s disease, psoriasis, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, and PTSD. What becomes problematic, even when considering the possible positive outcomes, relates back to the notion that more risk assessment is needed when documenting controlled clinical cannabis use. Another claim of contentious contradiction stands within a market wherein cannabis could be distributed and sold, calling attention such problems as crime, taxation, and the accessibility of marijuana where it could easily be bought. While some argue that legalizing marijuana, through a direct increase in accessibility, would lead to individuals selling marijuana to minors on the street, thereby increasing crime, others suggest that removing its hold from backdoor, black market crime will ultimately provide a safer community with the decrease in street dealers associated with criminal organizations. Additionally, the legalization of cannabis would free up time for police officers to pursue other, more harmful criminal activity. In terms of the financial outcomes, the sale and taxation of cannabis in its many forms suggests the possibility of creating farming and retail jobs, increasing revenue streams, and allowing a safe venue for those who wish to purchase cannabis recreationally or medicinally. A legal age of sale,

of course, would be established among those capable of purchasing the substance, thereby increasing the safety of its distribution and use. Often standing in the foregrounds of these arguments is a moral issue; when does a society decide whether it is ethical for individuals to elect smoking marijuana recreationally? Alcohol, a substance often noted for its problematic usage both behind the wheel and behind closed doors, could be compared to marijuana in terms of the misappropriation for its use and misuse. At what point does recreational use stop becoming recreational? Could the possibility of repeated marijuana use, whether or not physically addictive, be a reminder that it’s important to find something else to do with our time? Perhaps this time could be spent pursuing a new hobby, learning a new skill, or engaging with one’s community? What becomes evident, as the adage goes, is more testing is needed. Where once is an occurrence, twice is repetition, and thrice is a pattern, both sides of this debate have noted that patterns, both positive and negative, are prevalent in marijuana use and legalization. Perhaps the trickiest individual issue here comes down to considering the individuals involved. Where some have claimed that their lives have greatly improved from the use medicinal marijuana and others have claimed that nothing good can come from such a practice, measuring and monitoring individual needs leaves room for further exploration. In the case of recreational use, it becomes important to examine how often a hobby becomes a habit. As with anything that runs the risk of riskiness, safety, sensibility, and repeatedly proven results may cast the die on the future of legalization. So before we let the entirety of this argument go up in smoke, it is important to be progressive towards the possibilities, and discerning with the dangers.

MY WIFE DOESN’T LIVE UP TO MY P@&N FANTASY Dear He said ∙ She said – I’ve watched hardcore porn for years while I was single. Now I’m married to a wonderful person who was attractive in the beginning but she’s let herself go. So I’m watching porn again. Our sex life has suffered. Is it wrong to want my wife to look sexy again? How do I broach this subject without hurting her feelings? HE SAID So let me get this straight, you say she let herself go and she doesn’t look sexy. Are you kidding? Unless she gained 300 pounds and started growing warts I’m trying to see where you would all of a sudden have to revert to porn again… I mean, there is some pretty freaky stuff out there? None of this tame 50 Shades crap either, I mean some really freaky shit. But hey whatever floats your boat. How do you broach the subject… hmmm.. I know… “Hey honey, I love you and all, but can you perhaps look more like the women in my favorite porn video?” May as well throw in role play while you are at it… You can see this is not going to get you far. So your ridiculous fascination with porn along with some grandiose delusions about what a perfect woman should look like has caused your sex life to suffer? Dude, it’s not your wife, it’s you… What pornography doesn’t show is what healthy sex is like, since most pornographers cut out things like kissing, cuddling, other positive kinds of affection, and partners being responsive to each other’s needs and preferences. In real life, real love requires a real person. Research has found that after men are exposed to pornography, they rate themselves as less in love with their partner than men who didn’t see any porn. On top of that, another study found that after being exposed to pornographic images, people were more critical of their partner’s appearance, sexual curiosity, sexual performance, and displays of affection. So dude, switch off the porn, give your head a shake and look at your wife. Talk to her, bring that spark back. Now I’m not saying to give it up, learn to watch it together, on occasion for stimulus and perhaps a new idea or two.

amount of time; women are unique in all ways and some bounce back very quickly after pregnancy while others need time and have to work at it much harder. Chasing toddlers around all day is exhausting and may not be the sexiest time in a woman’s life, but this too will pass. Be very conscious of your partners feelings when bringing this up; be kind, supportive and helpful – don’t bring up the issue without putting some thought into how you can help and support your partner with any changes that need to be made. However, on the other side of this coin, some people just let themselves go after marriage. Men and women alike – just look around Walmart the next time you’re shopping. It’s appalling how little respect some people have for themselves and their mates, hell for the rest of us for that matter. If I never see another man’s gut hanging out the bottom of a too small t-shirt or another greasy pony tail sporting woman in sweats and flip flops again, it’ll be too soon. Yes, we all age and change with time, that is normal and not what I’m referring to. We have the responsibility to ourselves and our marriage to maintain certain standards of grooming and cleanliness and more importantly health and weight. I know not everyone sees it that way, but I do! Anything worth having takes effort – a good marriage, a decent sex life, a healthy body, even a clean house takes effort. If it’s just laziness that has led to this then you may have a problem on your hands, laziness is a trait that’s ingrained deeply in some. As for porn, that is a very controversial subject – some feel it’s healthy in moderation and can be enjoyed by both parties and others think it’s damaging to normal relationships and paints a very unrealistic picture of sex. Sounds like you will be having a long conversation with your wife! Or perhaps it will be the shortest one of your life… Good Luck ….. ! When they’re not arguing with each other, Rutland Girl and C. Dnaltur make up the senior writing staff for I Love Rutland. Ironically, once you get past all the tension, they’re actually really good friends. Just don’t tell them that. With their constant bickering, the two have made it possible to come up with two very different opinions on just about everything. Truly one of them has to be right.

SHE SAID No, it isn’t wrong to want your wife to be sexy again and in fact it’s totally normal – everyone wants and most of us need our partner to be sexually appealing. It’s a large part of what brought you together in the first place. Broaching this subject needs to be done with care and consideration for your spouse’s feelings. However, you haven’t said a lot about your situation; have you recently had a child or children? If this is the case then you really need to give it a respectable I Love Rutland │ JULY 2015 21

THE BENEFITS OF RESISTANCE TRAINING Resistance training is not just about building muscles, the benefits go far beyond muscular growth. More muscle = higher resting metabolism! More muscle and less fat means that you will burn more calories at work, on the couch and while you are sleeping. Research has shown that regular resistance training can increase your basal metabolic rate by up to 15%. For example, if you burn 2000 calories per day, that’s a potential 300 extra calories every day of the week. Do not get discouraged if initially you seem to be staying at the same weight or gain slightly, muscle weighs more per square inch than fat. This does NOT mean that just because you lifted some weights you should reward yourself with extra calories. Having more muscle translates into better functional performance in everyday life, weight training is an excellent way of combating several symptoms we all face as we get a

little older. Resistance training can reduce bone deterioration and build bone mass, preventing osteoporosis. Increased bone density and strength reduces back and knee pain by building muscle around these areas. Weight training is just as suitable for women as it is for men, I hear this all the time, “I don’t want to get big muscles”, this is not the case. Testosterone is a very important factor in the development of muscle shape, so as women have very low levels of this hormone, their muscles develop differently, meaning that a little resistance training will not lead to a bulky physique. Research has shown numerous, less obvious advantages to resistance training: •

Your ability to handle stress is improved due to lower levels of stress hormones.

your heart rate which means that you will also be getting cardiovascular benefits. •

Regular total body weight training can decrease diastolic blood pressure, which in turn can reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Increased muscle strength means enhanced performance of everyday tasks such as lifting, carrying and walking up stairs.

By working muscles through a full range of motion, weight training can improve overall body flexibility.

Proper posture is another benefit to strength training. The way you sit and stand are influenced by the health of a network of neck, shoulder, back, hip and abdominal muscles.

Once you have decided to start a resistance training program, there are many options to consider depending on your available time, fitness level, experience etc. First and foremost, consult a professional before beginning any training program, such as Results 4 Life Fitness. Training programs can be designed as personal, partner or group training. Group fitness classes or local run/walks are a fantastic way to add some cardio to your resistance training program. THE SUMMER GRILL KABOB We love the Okanagan! Yes people, it’s hot... if that bothers you, there are much colder places to live... I know I have no intentions of moving back up north. We are lucky that we live in a place where we can grill every day of the year. So we are outside grilling 3-4 days a week. Rutland Girl loves it and seems to think I’m good at it too! I loves trying new things and having another excuse to be outside! The best part about this recipe is that it is totally customizable. Use whatever veggies and meat that you want. Make them vegetarian, make them all meat, use leftovers, or clean out the freezer….the recipe is really for the marinate that is perfect for summer kabobs! Who knows. Bottom line, Summer means barbeque time. It’s simple, fast, relatively healthy and RG approved. I don’t think it gets any better.

Ingredients: Marinade: • ⅛ cup mirin • ¼ cup soy sauce • 1 tbls olive oil • 1 tbls sesame oil • 1 tsp powdered ginger powder (or ½ tbls fresh grated ginger) • 1 clove garlic, minced

Kabobs: • 2-3 Italian Sausages 1 in pieces • 1 lb steak, cut in 1 in pieces • 2 large chicken breasts, cut in 1 in pieces • your choice of veggies, cut in 1 in pieces (tomatoes, red & green bell peppers, squash, zucchini, eggplant, onion, etc)

Directions: Combine all marinade ingredients in a medium bowl and mix well to combine. Place meat in a large ziptop baggie and the veggies in a separate baggie. Add about ¾ of the marinade to the meat and the rest to the veggies. Mix well to combine. Allow to marinate for at least an hour in the refrigerator. Preheat grill to medium high heat and soak bamboo skewers in water. Place meat and veggies on separate skewers. Place in grill basket (meat toward the back since that will be the hottest part of the grill) or just place directly on the grill. Cook over direct heat for about 7 minutes on each side. Or until meat is done and veggies are cooked. Remove from heat and let rest a few minutes.

Of course, we just couldnt sit down on the patio and enjoy this fabulous dish without cracking a nice bottle of wine. Thankfully, Rutland has some great vineyards and lots of varities for us to choose from. Paired with tonights dish I appropriately chose the Cool Splash from House of Rose. The sister to Hot Flash this is a delightful light and fruity blend of Riesling and Pinot Gris. Off dry, it pairs well with white fish, chicken, salads and is a great summer sipper on a hot day.

THINK YOU DON’T NEED LIFE INSURANCE? other conservative investments such as guaranteed investment certificates and government bonds),

Your hard work and dedication has paid off – the result of a successful business endeavor or a lucrative business that you built. You’ve established a comfortable lifestyle where you enjoy your beautiful home, drive a nice car and maybe even have a nice waterfront property.

Tax-effective wealth transfers to the next generation or from a corporation,

You may believe that your success means you don’t need life insurance because you can self-insure against the unexpected financial burdens life throws your way. But is that really the case?

Additional tax-free retirement income through a series of loans, using the policy cash value as security,

Greater tax efficiency related to charitable giving, and

Estate preservation.

For the average Canadian, life insurance provides protection for the family when there’s a death and the income stops. Life insurance can provide funds to help pay the mortgage or maintain a family’s quality of life when someone dies. But for successful business owners with millions in assets, or well-off people whose home is paid for and kids are grown, is life insurance relevant? The answer is yes – and here’s why. Life insurance does more than protect your ability to earn an income. It also protects your wealth – existing assets, including real estate holdings, investments and your business. Life insurance is key to effective estate, business and lifestyle planning – especially in the getting ready and early stages of retirement. What was deemed a necessary expense or the ‘cost of protection’ in your younger years, now presents a valuable financial opportunity.

Because you’re a business owner or wealthy, your needs may be different from the average Canadian, but your need for a sound financial plan that’s designed to protect and grow your hard-earned assets isn’t. I can help youdetermine how much and what type of insurance you need.

Term vs. Perm... The Difference •

Term life insurance provides coverage for a specific period of time, such as 10, 20, 30 years or until a certain age. It’s an excellent lowercost method to provide money exactly when it’s needed, whether that need is to protect your income or provide funds to support a buy-sell agreement.

Permanent life insurance (including whole life and universal life) provides lifelong protection. It provides the same protection as term life insurance, but it can also help you grow and manage your wealth.

Take term life insurance, for example. For businesses with multiple owners, a buy-sell agreement sets out the conditions – such as disability or death – that give the owners the right to buy the other owner’s share of the business. Ideally, this agreement should be funded in a way that doesn’t cause financial difficulty for the company or the person being bought out – and that’s where term life insurance comes in. If an owner dies, the company or surviving owners (depending on how the insurance is set up) can use the insurance proceeds to buy the deceased owner’s share. Through a buy-sell agreement funded with life insurance, a business owner can help ensure that the business’ successors have the money they need to buy the business for its fair price and can continue the business without excessive debt or instalment payments. With permanent life insurance, a business owner can protect, and often improve, their financial position via: •

The Kite Runner is the first novel by AfghanAmerican a u t h o r K h a l e d Hosseini . Published in 2003 by Riverhead Books, it tells the story of Amir, a young boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, whose closest friend is Hassan, his father’s young Hazara servant. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of Afghanistan’s monarchy through the Soviet military intervention, the exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime. Hosseini has commented that he considers The Kite Runner to be a father–son story, emphasizing the familial aspects of the narrative, an element that he continued to use in

his later works. Themes of guilt and redemption feature prominently in the novel, with a pivotal scene depicting an act of violence against Hassan that Amir fails to prevent. The latter half of the book centers on Amir’s attempts to atone for this transgression by rescuing Hassan’s son over two decades later. The Kite Runner became a bestseller after being printed in paperback and was popularized in book clubs. It was a number one New York Times bestseller for over two years, with over seven million copies sold in the United States. Reviews were generally positive, though parts of the plot drew significant controversy in Afghanistan.
