first words

IF I HAD $100,000 “Rutland has seen some significant changes over the past decade from having the best established systems of parks than any other community in the city, a major hub for sports and recreation activities and a diverse community of citizens with strong local roots, Rutland has a right to boast.” With that statement the City announced that Rutland has $100,000 to spend on improvements. And not only that, the Rutland citizens had an opportunity to say how it was to be spent! So what were some of the suggestions people came up with? There were some really good ones focusing on beautification and urban renewal. These included building statues, more park facilities, community gardens, more outdoor lighting, vendor kiosks, a farmer’s market, sidewalks and crosswalks and more family community events. A lot of these have great merit. In fact any one of them would go a long way to add to the feel and already growing community spirit. And well, with every open forum such as this, there were some less than stellar ideas in my opinion. There was a suggestion for edible boulevards – I was looked at pretty strangely when I lay down in the

grass in the middle of the day for no apparent reason. Can you imagine if I decided to have a snack while I was down there? A couple of ideas were focused on changing the name. Hmmmm, I’m not so sure that was really what the city had in mind when they announced the money. In fact, I’m pretty sure it defeats a lot of hard work that many groups have done. And of course, there was always the “don’t spend the money, lower taxes”. I mean really, the only things that are guaranteed in this world are death and taxes and I really doubt that it’s feasible to expect the government to lower your taxes. In fact, they even tax death. There were even a few entries that were stricken from the list entirely. One of these included placing the red sharps collection boxes throughout the community so people had places to dispose of their needles. Really, do we want to play into the negative (albeit mainly false) reputation Rutland already has? In all seriousness, it’s great that this opportunity was given to us. We are being noticed for what we are, a strong community within Kelowna. But what’s really disappointing about this whole exercise is the apathy with which we approached it. According to the statistics from the survey

company, only 794 people took part in the exercise, and only 99 of them really participated. Based upon the readership that this magazine distributes to, that’s only 6% of the population of the I Love Rutland readership base taking part and 1% actually participating. Considering the opportunity that was given to us, that’s embarrassing. It’s little wonder why we get looked down upon when we don’t seem to even care. Personally, if it were up to me I would love to see the money spent on revitalizing the community and bringing more business opportunities into the area. My vote is for the “Steel Box Vendor Kiosks” but not just for Roxby Park. I’m sure there are a few places they could go. If you’re interested in the survey results, go to http://getinvolved. kelowna.ca/100k-worth-of-ideasyour-ideas-action-change/archived and see all of the ideas for yourself. It’s too late to do anything, but many of the things suggested can be done with a little community participation and without spending $100,000. We just have to get out and work together.

A HEALTHY START TO THE DAY Lori Heczko Special to I Love Rutland

Rutland Road is the worst road in Rutland. Daily, people are darting out in traffic just to access the bus stops on the other side, and some with children. No one likes to stop for any of these people, and when one person does and holds up traffic, the people behind get irritable. Is it because all the roads are T-Intersections that none of the roads between Leathead and Highway 33 have marked crosswalks? There really needs to be more than just the one cross walk, which is located not even half a block from the Highway 33 Intersection. Thank you, Anna We welcome all your feedback. If something is on your mind, let us know. Send us what you have to say to chase@iloverutland.com and have your voice heard!

Since September 2010, a team of volunteers from the Rutland Branch of Interior Savings and Interior Insurance have been taking turns going to South Rutland Elementary School every morning at 8:00 am to provide a healthy breakfast for kids who otherwise might go without. Each volunteer contributes not only with their time but also financially by picking up items such as juice, cereal bars, oatmeal and fresh fruit. The program has grown considerably and the group is very appreciative of support from local businesses such as Cobs Bakery, Costco and most recently Food for thought Canada who receives support from Starbucks. Why do the staff of Interior Savings take time out of their own busy schedules to do this? They can see how appreciative the students are for having them there and they feel good about having made a difference for these kids. School principal, Cathie Mutter, is thankful for ISCU and their

ESCAPING THE PAIN Chase Jestley I Love Rutland

A Rutland man is speaking out about his childhood experience of being bullied. “My parents moved to the Ellison area with me and my two older brothers when I was 3 months old,” said 52-year-old Ralph Morrison. “From grade 3 to grade 9 I was bullied by the same kid on a regular basis. I was also sexually abused by grownups in the farming community.” He says he can no longer sit back and watch bullying destroy lives — like that of Amanda Todd, the B.C. teen who posted a video on YouTube describing her experience of being blackmailed, bullied and physically assaulted. She committed suicide. “It sickens me. The fact someone takes their own life because they were bullied should be a huge red flag in our society that change is needed,” he said. Morrison adds he was so afraid of repercussions that he never told anyone about being bullied, not even his parents. “The abuse I endured took away my confidence and self-esteem,” he went on. “My life was filled with drugs, alcohol, violence and prison.” It only all came out in his recently published book called “The Fear Inside”. He wrote his story in the hopes that someone else wouldn’t lock their fears away inside them and would instead seek out help and support. Morrison is now planning a cross

Canada tour to talk about his bullying experience to students and to raise awareness. “In late March 2014 to early April 2014 I will begin my journey across Canada,” he said. “My hopes are to speak to schools, business leaders and community groups about the subject of bullying. Bringing as much attention as possible to this issue.” If crossing Canada is successful Morrison plans to continue his journey with Europe, Australia and South America. “This is not a small town or big city problem. It’s worldwide, and we all need to come together to bring about change.”

108 YEARS PROUD! Rutland Girl I Love Rutland

March, the month that says winter, is finally behind us and damn I wish I was Irish! There are a few more weeks of good skiing and boarding to be had up at Big White, but for us Valley dwellers it’s safe to say we’ve seen the backside of winter.

And what’s not to like about this time of the year? Well, other than the grit and grime on the roads and a few hundred potholes, but that will be taken care of by the guys with the city in the very near future. Feel free to e-mail or call them if they don’t get right on it, but that’s an article for another day. There’s something about spring that gets the mind working, planning and generally looking on the bright side of life. This spring is a little brighter than the last few and we know that 2014 is going to be a great year for Rutland! All things considered, it should be a great year for Canada as a whole. The sluggish economy is finally moving and that is the wheel that makes the rest of them turn. Here in our little piece of paradise things have been steadily improving within the community and the buzz around Rutland these past few months is that 2014 is going to see much more of that coming our way, with changes

and improvements. More new business start ups and others moving into our community while existing businesses are expanding and renovating; just take a look around next time you walk down Hwy 33. It’s more than just that though – the winds of change that are blowing through Rutland are bringing with it far more than just enterprising individuals and construction. They are bringing a renewed sense of accomplishment, community pride, encouragement, self worth and much more. I know we’ve touched on this before but it’s worth broaching again – Rutland has come into its own, forging a strong uniqueness that can only be “Rutland Pride”. We’re well on our way to burying those old negative stereo types that have unfairly dogged us for far too long. Our Rutland is an amazing diverse community with a long rich history that dates back as far as 1908. A community that has been growing and flourishing for over a 100 years, rich in its people, land, agriculture, enterprise, amenities and community spirit. A community that will take on the next 100 years with the strength of character that makes us - Rutland Proud!

INCREASE YOUR HOME’S ENERGY EFFICIENCY Inspect your roof

Hugh Cairns RHI Special to I Love Rutland

Everyone wants to save money these days, and homeowners are no exception. To reduce the cost of monthly energy bills, many are taking on small, budget friendly, doit-yourself projects that provide big savings down the road. With a few simple tips, you can easily make a home comfortable regardless of the season, while also greatly reducing utility costs. In fact, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, homeowners can typically save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs, or up to 10 percent of total energy costs, just by properly air sealing their homes and adding insulation. Here are a few tips to get your home properly sealed so you can see the energy savings as soon as possible: Seal your ducts, both supply and return

In most homes, about 20 percent of the air moving through the duct system is lost because of poorly connected ducts, holes and leaks. Signs include rooms that are tough to cool or heat; ducts are located in an unfinished basement, garage or crawl area; or you have high-energy bills. The use of a sealant, such as the DAP 3.0 Window, Door, Trim & Side High Performance Sealant, is a cost-effective solution for fixing leaky ducts in your home.

Be sure to give your roof a thorough inspection. Check for loose shingles that can lead to water damage and rot. Also, be sure to seal any gaps around gables, flashing and chimneys. Foam seal exterior wall penetrations

Check to see that all exterior wall penetrations, such as lights, doorbells, hose spigots and dryer vents, are properly sealed to ensure maximum energy efficiency. Seal attic penetrations

Gaps around house fans, attic access doors, exhaust fans and light fixtures send warm air right up into your cold attic, so make sure these areas are properly sealed. Seal rim joists in the basement

Many new products can help you weatherize and make your home more efficient.

If you have a basement, using an elastomeric sealant or foam sealant around the rim joist is one of the best ways to weather seal your home. A foam sealant will fill and seal any large cracks, gaps or voids.

bathtub is on the floor above. If you can see the bottom of the tub, you’re paying good money just to condition the air on the bottom of your bathtub. Seal it up with foamboard and a recommended foamboard sealant.

Fill gaps between the basement and living spaces

Investing a little time and money on properly sealing your home now can mean a big return on your heating and cooling bills down the line.

This can be checked by going in the basement and looking up at where the

HEDLEY RETURNS Caillum Smith Special to I Love Rutland

The Canadian, rockpop group, Hedley made a post-Valentine’s performance at a sold out Prospera Place on February 15th as a part of their “Wild Live”. Opening performances by singer/songwriters, Danny Fernando, JRDN and Alyssa Reid tamed the crowd as anticipation for the BC based band was bubbling. A cinematic adventure film then appeared through the haze, mesmerizing the crowd, allowing the group to sneak on stage and surprise them with the their opening song “Anything” and the sound of 6,886 screaming fans reverberated throughout

Kelowna’s downtown. The intensity continued throughout the night as the band performed their second of a 30-show tour, which spans over 7000km across Canada; from Victoria, BC in the West to St John’s, Newfoundland in the East, it will be their most extensive Canadian tour to date. “We are going to a record-breaking amount of cities this year and we want to see all of your beautiful, shining faces there!” says lead singer, Jacob Hoggard, to his fans. GET BACK ON THE WAGON Rhonda Laturnus Results 4 Life Fitness

We are at the end of our third month of an amazing health and fitness journey. My client has made some very important lifestyle changes including healthier food choices and incorporating daily exercise into her schedule. These essential changes have definitely paid off; my client has lost 33.2 pounds. Receiving numerous compliments and encouragement from others is only a small part of the benefits my client is enjoying. She is feeling healthier and is very happy with her achievements and her decision to commit to her health. Although weight loss is the reason most people decide to make nutritional changes, good nutrition is about more than just losing weight. Finding a longterm set of dietary habits should be based on not only body composition but also improved health. Many good intentions fail when people fall off the healthy lifestyle bandwagon. First off, all of us fall off now and then; it’s normal behaviour.

Accept it, forgive yourself and get back on! The countless benefits of proper nutrition choices may be more obvious to some than the many benefits of regular exercise. Regular exercise can bring remarkable changes not just to your body, your metabolism and your heart, but also your spirits. Exercise has a unique capacity to reduce levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. It also stimulates the production of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers and mood elevators. Challenge yourself to combine clean, real food choices with daily exercise and as your waistline shrinks and your strength and stamina increase, your self- image and self-confidence will improve. Your increased energy will help you succeed in many tasks and the discipline will help you achieve other lifestyle goals. I am very excited about the progress my client has made and am confident and eager to share her continued success.

YOU CAN NOT DIAGNOSE WHAT YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND Three years ago I discovered I am celiac and lactose intolerant. I had spent nearly my entire life with abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea (from the celiac disease) and then conversely painful constipation (from lactose), constant bouts with sties in my eyes, chronic anemia and lethargy, almost non-existent B-12, battles with my weight and on and on.

Stephanie Stevens Special to I Love Rutland

I cannot count how many times I went to the doctor or ER in so much pain I thought I was dying, only to be told, regretfully, they did not know what was wrong with me, so go home. Now, I don’t harbour any ill-will at all towards the docs I did see as, let’s face it, celiac disease in particular has had little if any attention or study in North America until very recently. And they did always try to help, thinking I had IBS perhaps, or something stress related. You cannot diagnose what you don’t truly understand. My diagnosis did finally come about after I spent a week in the ICU at the hospital critically ill with a campylobacter infection. Now, campylobacter is a nasty infection for anyone, however to me, with intestines ravaged from years of inadvertent abuse by myself, it was very nearly a death sentence as I went septic and my organs began to systematically shut down. My husband, by taking matters into his own hands and scooping me up to see my doctor, and my doctor, seeing immediately I was indeed very ill and admitting me right away, quite literally saved my life. Had I been in a city hospital, in a crowd of other patients, I would likely have had to wait hours and would not be telling this story. I will forever be grateful to the incredible team at our local hospital. I get exceedingly irritated at people who complain about our facility for this very reason. But that is not my point.

I may have been able to help myself and help my doctor help me. Not all bodies are created equal. And not all bodies can exist in a strong and healthy manner according to the good old Canada Food Guide. For me, that guide is little more than a recipe for illness and pain. We are just recently beginning to realize that what we put in our bodies can drastically affect our health in so many ways. It is time to start re-assessing what we have always been told is a healthy diet. We know, for example, that fast food is not a healthy choice. But it goes so far beyond that. You have to become a dedicated label reader, study up on what all those ingredients really are and the effect they can and do have on YOUR body. And remember that advertising has one purpose: to make you buy the product. Look beyond that advertising. The other thing to be aware of is how the food is produced. If it was genetically modified, covered in pesticides or some Continued Next Page Diet Makes A Difference

My point, and I do have one, is this: in some cases, a doctor is only as good as the patient they treat. We have to start taking our personal health more seriously, and help those trying to treat us, rather than asking for a prescription every time we see them. If you have had ongoing chronic health issues, and have never been able to resolve them, please, for your own sake, take a good look at what is truly ailing you. It could very well be what you are putting in your mouth. Since I have gone though all this, I have come to realize that had I done some investigation of my own,

DIET MAKES A DIFFERENCE Continued from Page 13

other chemical, it alters the benefits of that food drastically. And how processed is it? Oatmeal is a good healthy choice for many people, but the more processed it is, the fewer the benefits. Just as gluten and dairy are an issue for me, those same foods (assuming you are buying as pure and organic as you can) may pose few or no issues to someone else. The most vital thing you can do for yourself and your health, at least in my opinion, is to listen to your body. The seemingly strangest things can be affected by something as simple as what you are ingesting. I stared at the numbers thinking I had read them wrong. For the first time ever, my red blood cell and B-12 counts were perfect. She and I were both thrilled. No more pills, liquid supplements or injections required. When you think about it, it is simple. Because I had been eating gluten rich food my entire life, my ravaged small intestines were unable to absorb nutrients properly. Often when a person has had an issue like celiac disease, particularly if it did not manifest itself dramatically as a tot, a critical illness like the one I had will kick it into high gear. The celiac symptoms are much more dramatic now if I do ingest it, as are the lactose issues. However, now that I am not living in pain and discomfort all the time, I am just that much more aware of them when they do on occasion occur. But consider all the issues I had, which have all but disappeared simply by listening to my body and changing my diet, and then consider any chronic or recurring health issues you have.

or create an illness, inflammatory issues, pain or just general “I feel awful” symptoms. It takes work, trial and error, study, a determination to feel better, and in some cases, changing your outlook on the medical practitioner you see. I am not saying dump your doc (unless they steadfastly refuse to consider anything other than prescribing a drug instead of considering the root cause, I do have issues with that. In that case, you may want to shop around for another health practitioner), but you can access a variety of other medical and nutritional professionals who can help you with this process. I am not a doctor, I am not saying I know better than they do. But if you don’t try to help them help you, you are not doing yourself, or them, any favours. And I do believe that most doctors, if they see you are trying to help yourself, will be supportive of your efforts and probably have some resources for you to draw upon. If they are not supportive of it, well, again, you may want to shop around. Really have a good, hard look at the food you are buying. I generally skip anything processed now, though there is a gluten free/dairy free pizza I occasionally indulge in that has a few ingredients I am sure are not on my top hundred list of good things to put in your body! But hey, I never said I was a saint. Sometimes you just want that treat, and if I only indulge in a g-free/d- free pizza every couple of months, I can live with that indulgence. You can be your body’s best friend, or its worst enemy, the moment you open your mouth to eat.

It goes much further than lactose or gluten. We are all unique, from our DNA up, but there are some very common foods that will exacerbate 14 march 2014 │ www.iloverutland.com

I woke up to a bit of a cold yesterday and realized that it was the first time I had been sick with a cold or flu in probably two years. Prior to my diagnosis, I caught everything that came my way. My immune system has obviously become much stronger. Perhaps not every health issue can be healed with a change in your diet, but a great many can. Take your time if you embark on a journey of discovering what foods work best for you and which ones are detrimental to you; don’t jump in blindly. This is where the work comes in, through research and label reading and asking. And remember that no one dietary regime is going to work with every person. You are unique. There are a lot of professionals out there willing to guide you because it can be overwhelming when taking something like this on. It is well written, easy to understand and truly seems to give you a wellrounded knowledge of each food included. The hardest part is to look at a food you have always eaten and thought was good for you and consider if it truly is or not. Your body is your best guide. Every now and then I think I could totally murder a big ol’ Pizza Hut stuffed crust gluten filled pizza with extra cheese, but being sick for a week after makes it a far less attractive choice for me. Give it time and have patience. You really have to take things slowly and record how you feel when you take out or introduce a new food. Stick with it. If nothing else, you will discover a new culinary world, and hopefully, you will also discover you feel better.

At this point the focus should be on being organized and on time, ensuring that your accountant or tax preparer has everything needed to correctly file your return. Ideally everyone would know what they need to provide their accountant with but changes in individual and family situations as well as the tax system make this difficult. That’s why a checklist can be a useful tool in ensuring important items are not missed at tax time. Below is a generalized checklist provided to our personal tax clients. It’s also important to ensure that your accountant has current information for you and your family, did you move during the year, purchase your first home, change occupations, retire, get married, have a child etc. When you bring your taxes in to your accountant they should be asking the right questions but in case they don’t, it’s a good idea to make note of any changes in you and your family’s status and if you want your refund direct deposited, provide your accountant with a void cheque before your taxes are filed.

You may be self-employed, have rental properties, complex investments, a disabled family member, a recent adoption, work in a prescribed zone, foreign income and investments, sold a revenue property. BEER - THE NECTAR OF THE GODS C. Dnautur I Love Rutland

There truly is a beer for every occasion. Beer is part of Canada’s cultural and economic fabric and is enjoyed socially and in moderation by millions of adult Canadians on a daily basis. Drinking beer can be part of healthy and active lifestyle when consumed responsibly. After careful study at the Beer Canada Institute and research at many barstools across the country, it became obvious that there was more to beer than first meets the eye. •

Beer was so important in early Canadian culture that by the time of Confederation in 1867, there was already an established brewing tradition in the colonies. Early Canadian drinkers would have thought the term “social drinking” to be redundant: having a pint meant being among countrymen in a public drinking establishment. The increased use of glasses allowed bar patrons to get a good look at what they were drinking, a luxury not afforded by the old pewter and earthenware mugs. This lead to the decline in popularity of porter and an increase in popularity of pale ales and other clear, lighter-coloured varieties of beer. To achieve the ultimate draft pint, pour the beer directly into the bottom of a perfectly clean glass. Continue to pour, letting the foam rise and settle until the glass is full, effectively creating a dense and long lasting head on the pint.

18 march 2014 │ www.iloverutland.com

The head sticking to the side of your pint glass? That is referred to as lacing and is a sign of a clean glass and a good brew.

Amber glass bottles provide excellent protection from light (both natural and artificial) which interacts with hop compounds and can cause beer to have a ‘skunky’ taste.

To clarify a commonly held misconception, cans have no effect on the quality or taste of the beer stored inside them. They also have the advantage of being recyclable and completely opaque, which protects the beer from light.

Canned beer gained consumer popularity with soldiers who had returned home from World War II, familiar and comfortable with cans from their time overseas.

Beer is fat free.

Beer contains protein and carbohydrates.

Did you know that Japanese sake is actually a type of beer, not a wine?

When pairing food and beer, be aware that a hoppy bitter flavour emphasizes spicy dishes.

Your tongue has about 10,000 taste buds, so put them to good work and try out a new beer!

This St. Patrick’s Day, take the time, enjoy a cold beer and remember, with this much tradition and importance, there’s really nothing wrong with a good beer.

DATING AND STILL ONLINE I’ve been dating my wonderful boyfriend for almost two and a half years. We met online. I recently discovered that he (unlike me) has kept his online profile this entire time. C. Dnaltur & Rutland Girl I Love Rutland

I used his computer to look up a recipe since it was on the kitchen table and I saw that he still receives emails from the site recommending matches -- and he reads them! I don’t believe he is actively using the site and I know he’s not cheating on me. We’re very happy together. But am I wrong to be a little weirded out by this? HE SAID: Simple answer is yes... you are wrong in more ways than one. First off, you’re going through his emails. What’s next, do you read his text messages and what he receives on Facebook? If you’re so sure he’s not cheating on you, then why go through things like that? Or do you maybe have doubts? Secondly, if you’ve ever signed up for something online, getting rid of the annoying spam emails that inevitably keep coming is damn near impossible. I mean unless you thoroughly go through every single checkbox and click here and there you never get rid of the damned things completely. And in the words of “Sweet Brown” Wilkins, “ain’t nobody got time for that!” (well, except maybe for you). Thirdly, sometimes it’s downright hilarious to see what the “ever-so-wise” computer matched you up with. I am quite happily in a relationship with a wonderful woman I met through more traditional means (ok, one of my lady friends felt sorry for me showing up stag to all the parties and leaving with someone of less than upstanding virtues, and introduced us) and still received the matchmaking emails for specifically that reason. But then of course, had I been

completely honest with my answers, I probably would have g o t t e n different matches. A n d sometimes I go on and change my profile a little bit just to see what kind of responses I get. The best ones to date were when I went on to say I was an unemployed, half blind man of a diminutive stature and a prosthetic leg. It took the computer a few days, but it found me a few matches, proving that there is indeed someone for everyone. Actually, sometimes after a few glasses of wine, my girlfriend and I go on and see what kind of ridiculous matches we can make the computer come up with. Long story short, there is no reason to go off the rails without cause; chill out, have a glass of wine and just see it as the joke it most likely is. Or quit whining to everyone and just ask him. And I would suggest the profile changing game, it’s really quite fun. SHE SAID: Your “wonderful boyfriend” seems to have a less than wonderful side to him! Furthermore, and I have to flat out correct you, having an account, receiving and reading the e-mails is considered Continued Next Page Open Your Eyes

actively using the site. You are not wrong to be weirded out; in fact you seem to be minimizing the seriousness of his actions. This is not about the rules or guidelines that go with new relationships, it’s not about the “when should I delete my profile” dilemma or any of that. It simply is not acceptable on any level to be on a dating website when you are in a committed relationship and, to most people, it is a form of cheating. The implications of his actions are very serious and you need to take a look at what he is actually doing here and more importantly - who he is

deep down. On most sites he would have had to make a conscious decision to renew his subscription repeatedly in order to still be on there after two and a half years. This is not a minor indiscretion; ask yourself the tough question, why is he doing this? It’s not as if you’ve been married for 20 or 30 years, yours is a relatively new relationship and this does not speak well for his commitment to you or your relationship and says so much about his character. Open your eyes and do it quickly. The Bottom Line - He is presenting himself to the world as a single available man and actively exploring his options for greener pastures.

When they’re not arguing with each other, Rutland Girl and C. Dnaltur make up the senior writing staff for I Love Rutland. Ironically, once you get past all the tension, they’re actually really good friends. Just don’t tell them that.

Never a dull moment for you, Leo, even in times of responsibility. It’s not your imagination that it feels like everyone has lost their sense of humour. Make the most of Venus in the shadow of your sign; tackle things with a new approach to commitment and long term goals, ask yourself the right questions, even the tough ones – you just may find that you have the answers, Pisces! People who were born in March are said to have very attractive personalities and be very affectionate. They are honest and trustworthy by nature. They also get a lot of enjoyment out of peace and serenity. They love to serve others as long as others appreciate their kindness. They are very good people to talk to because they are great listeners. They love to travel. Although they have lots of good qualities, they do possess negative ones. They are often moody and secretive. They are pretty easy to anger and love to get attention. They often make decisions too quickly.

st patrick’s day

ST. PATRICK’S DAY TRADITIONS C. Dnaltur I Love Rutland

St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday known for parades, shamrocks and all things Irish. From leprechauns to the color green, find out how symbols we now associate with St. Patrick’s Day came to be, and learn about a few that are purely American invention. THE SHAMROCK

The shamrock, which was also called the “seamroy” by the Celts, was a sacred plant in ancient Ireland because it symbolized the rebirth of spring. By the seventeenth century, the shamrock had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism. As the English began to seize Irish land and make laws against the use of the Irish language and the practice of Catholicism, many Irish began to wear the shamrock as a symbol of their pride in their heritage and their displeasure with English rule. IRISH MUSIC

Music is often associated with St. Patrick’s Day—and Irish culture in general. From ancient days of the Celts, music has always been an important part of Irish life. The Celts had an oral culture, where religion, legend and history were passed from one generation to the next by way of stories and songs. After being conquered by the English, and forbidden to speak their own language, the Irish, like other oppressed peoples, turned to music to help them remember important events and hold on to their heritage and history. As it often stirred emotion and helped to galvanize people, music was outlawed by the English. During her reign, Queen Elizabeth I even decreed that all artists and pipers were to be arrested and hanged on the spot. Today, traditional Irish bands like The Chieftains, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem are gaining worldwide popularity. Their music is produced with instruments that have been used for centuries, including the fiddle, the uilleann pipes (a sort of elaborate bagpipe), the tin whistle (a sort of flute that is actually made of nickel-silver, brass or aluminum)

and the bodhran (an ancient type of framedrum that was traditionally used in warfare rather than music). THE SNAKE

It has long been recounted that, during his mission in Ireland, St. Patrick once stood on a hilltop (which is now called Croagh Patrick), and with only a wooden staff by his side, banished all the snakes from Ireland. In fact, the island nation was never home to any snakes. The “banishing of the snakes” was really a metaphor for the eradication of pagan ideology from Ireland and the triumph of Christianity. Within 200 years of Patrick’s arrival, Ireland was completely Christianized. CORNED BEEF

Each year, thousands of Irish Americans gather with their loved ones on St. Patrick’s Day to share a “traditional” meal of corned beef and cabbage. Though cabbage has long been an Irish food, corned beef only began to be associated with St. Patrick’s Day at the turn of the century. I r i s h immigrants living on New York City’s Lower East Side substituted corned beef for their traditional dish of Irish bacon to save money. They learned about the cheaper alternative from their J e w i s h neighbors.

Did You Know? The color traditionally associated with St. Patrick was blue, not green.

THE LEPRECHAUN

The original Irish name for these figures of folklore is “lobaircin,” meaning “small-bodied fellow.” Belief in leprechauns probably stems from Celtic belief in fairies, tiny men and women who could use their magical powers to serve good or evil. In Celtic folktales, leprechauns were cranky souls, responsible for mending the shoes of the other fairies. Though only minor figures in Celtic folklore, leprechauns were known for their trickery, which they often used to protect their much-fabled treasure.

pet health

DENTAL HEALTH & YOUR PETS Dr. Irene Mul Okanagan Veterinary Clinic

March is dental awareness month. Poor oral hygiene can cause serious health risks, both to people and pets. Bacteria from tartar can enter the bloodstream and be transported to organs where they can cause infections and organ failure. Have you noticed that your pet has a foul odor coming from the mouth? This could be due to plaque and gingivitis and can be treated. Your veterinarian will be able to evaluate if your pet needs a dental cleaning. There are different stages of dental disease, grade 1 to 4. Grade 1 means that your pet has mild plaque build up and possibly some associated gingivitis, grade 4 means that the plaque has caused such severe infection to the teeth and gingival (gums), and some extractions might be necessary. Grade 2 and 3 are the stages in between. If a grade 1 is left untreated it will eventually turn into a grade 4 which is more time consuming, and so more expensive to treat and involves extractions. I often hear the comment from clients when we talk about an extraction “but how can he chew without that tooth?” An infected tooth is painful (just like it is for us) and a source of bacteria. You will be amazed how much happier your dog or cat will be when this pain source is taken care of. He probably wasn’t using that tooth to chew because it was painful; if a tooth is infected it is better to take it out than leave it in.

Owners naturally are concerned when anesthesia is required for their pet. However dental cleaning in an unanesthetized pet is inappropriate for the following reasons: Dental tartar is firmly attached to the surface of the teeth. Scaling to remove this tartar is done by use of ultrasonic power scalers plus sharp hand tools. Even slight head movement while using these tools could result in injury of the oral tissues. Professional dental scaling includes scaling under the gumline, just like with humans. The tartar that you see on the surface of the tooth is only a fraction of the total amount and most of the tartar is located under the gumline. Without an anesthesia, a proper scaling below the gumline is impossible. You can’t tell your pet to sit still and not move their head. Removal of dental tartar on the visible surface of the teeth has little effect on a pet’s health and is purely cosmetic. Anesthesia ensures the animal cooperates with a procedure that could be painful. If he was awake during this procedure he could bite, become head shy or develop a fear which makes future oral health impossible. A complete oral examination is not possible in an unanaesthetized patient, areas of disease especially in the back of the mouth or inside of the teeth could be easily missed. Dental x-rays to evaluate the root health and extractions can only be done while the animal is sleeping.

Another comment often heard is that they found someone that can do the teeth cleaning without anesthetic.

Although anesthesia will never be 100% risk-free, modern anesthetic and patient evaluation techniques used in veterinary hospitals minimize risks; millions of dental scaling procedures are safely performed each year. To minimize the need for professional dental scaling procedures and to optimize life-long oral health for dogs and cats, daily dental home care is recommended from an early age. This should include brushing the teeth, dental diets and chew materials, combined with periodic examination of the patient by a veterinarian and dental scaling when indicated. We would be happy to discuss your pet’s oral health further with you, contact our clinic for further details. Good oral health has been proven to extend lives.

Joining us from Okanagan Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Irene Mul studied veterinary medicine at the Utrecht University in the Netherlands. She graduated in 2005, where she worked as a locum veterinarian in Holland and volunteered in clinics in Venezuela and Aruba. She has a special interest in internal surgery and ultrasonography. WINE & DINE

UNCORKED THE PERFECT PAIRING

RACK OF LAMB WITH GUINNESS® AND MUSTARD

When looking for the perfect wine to accompany your lamb, a red or white wine will work. with this recipe we recommend the Pinotage from The View Winery. Pinotage’s two ancestors - Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, give this wine the personality of a more robust, more rustic Pinot Noir. This is something special. It looks stunning when finished and it’s really easy to make. Have it on a quiet night in with someone special and you’re sure to impress or even better, persuade someone special to cook it for you. Ingredients •

1 French trimmed rack of lamb (ask your butcher to do it for you)

Herb breadcrumbs (you can buy them ready made)

½ can Draught

Dijon Mustard

of

GUINNESS®

#1-2287 Ward Road 250.860.0742

Preparation Put the lamb and the GUINNESS® into a bowl, cover and allow to marinate in the fridge for 6 - 8 hours. Take the lamb out and coat it with the mustard. Then press the lamb into the herb breadcrumbs. The crumbs will stick to the mustard and make a nice crust.

But while we are really proud of our Rutland wineries, let’s face it, this recipe screams “Serve it with a Guinness!”

Then simply roast in the oven at 200° C for 20 - 25 minutes. Serve with roast vegetables and champ potato. Delicious. GUINNESS® is the only beer that really makes this work. The glaze on the lamb is as rich as you’d expect from red wine.

HEATHER’S PICK OF THE MONTH

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. It is an oldie, but a goodie. For those of you who haven’t experienced Follett’s greatest work to date, I highly recommend it. This book has something for every reader.

Everything readers expect from Follett is here: intrigue, fast-paced action, and passionate romance. But what makes The Pillars of the Earth extraordinary is the time: the twelfth century; the place: feudal England; and the subject: the building of a glorious cathedral. Follett has re-created the crude, flamboyant England of the Middle Ages in every detail. The vast forests, the walled towns, the castles, and the monasteries become a familiar landscape. Against this richly imagined and intricately interwoven backdrop, filled with the ravages of war and the rhythms of daily life, the master storyteller draws the reader irresistibly into the intertwined lives of his characters: into their dreams, their labors, and

their loves. Tom, the master builder; Aliena, the ravishingly beautiful noblewoman; Philip, the prior of Kingsbridge; Jack, the artist in stone; and Ellen, the woman of the forest who casts a terrifying curse. From humble stonemason to imperious monarch, each character is brought vividly to life.

The building of the cathedral, with the almost eerie artistry of the unschooled stonemasons, is the center of the drama. Around the site of the construction, Follett weaves a story of betrayal, revenge, and love, which begins with the public hanging of an innocent man and ends with the humiliation of a king. On first glance it is an intimidating book at almost 1000 pages long. Once you start reading, however, you will be surprised by how fast you get drawn into it. I was amazed at how quickly I finished it. I actually didn’t want to finish it. The characters resonated too deeply with me. All I can say is, thankfully he wrote a follow up. World Without End, an equally good book.
