CHRISTMAS IS AROUND THE CORNER!

Visiting a Weihnachtsmarkt (Holiday Market) with your family, friends or even co-workers is a “must-do” for every German to get into Holiday mood. For the lucky ones who get to travel to Germany, we showed you a short list of our favorites. There are plenty of Christmas markets all across the US, so no need to miss out if you are staying state side. We put together a list of famous markets For a full list check out our Website www.heimatabroad.com. For local events you should also check with your nearest German school, church or local community. Many of them organize one-day or weekend options as well!

RARE DIRNDL LAUNCHED KRAMPUS COLLECTION

Erika Neumeier from Rare Dirndls is taking her design skills to the next level. In addition to a highly unique Dirndl selection the Chicago native recently launch her new design line around Krampus, a figure from the central European folklore who punishes children who misbehaved around Christmas while St. Niklaus rewards kids who were well-behaved. Check out here new designs https://raredirndl.com/ collections/the-krampus-shop which make a perfect Christmas gift!

Of course a new Holiday outfit from Rare Dirndl would also be great Holiday treat.

200 years “Silent Night”

THE ORIGINS OF THE FAMOUS CHRISTMAS SONG

The magic of “Silent Night” has remained uninterrupted for 200 years. It marks the festive moments when the lights in church are dimmed or the family gathers around the Christmas tree. A song that promises consolation and gives hope. Over and over again.

For centuries, the song connected people no matter of their personal background, age or religion but not many know of its origin: 200 years ago, Joseph Mohr, a priest from Salzburg, and Franz Xaver Gruber, a teacher from Upper Austria, sang the song for the very first time at the St. Nikola Church in Oberndorf near Salzburg. Joseph Mohr wrote the original poem and commissioned Franz Xaver Gruber to compose the melody. Only a few years later, singing families from the Zillertal valley carried the song from Austria into Europe and to the rest of the world. Today, the song is performed in over 300 languages and dialects.

GERMAN DELIGHTS IN NEW YORK

New York City transforms Union Square and Columbus Circle into Holiday markets with lot’s of local and international vendors. We love the story of Ingo & Maria founders of German Delights who take out several months of their lives each year to run several booths at those 2 markets selling imported goods from Germany and offering delicious Bratwurst. Good news for Weihnachtsmarkt Fans: For the first time this year they offer original Gluehwein (yes, the real deal) and beer to keep warm inside and out.
