RENDRE GRACE D’ABORD…

BIEN DANS LA VICE-PROVINCE…

e rends grâce au Seigneur pour l’expérience vécue. Il y a six ans, le Recteur Majeur, le P. Pascual Chávez, m’avait demandé ce service d’animation et de gouvernement de notre Vice-Province de l’AGL et je l’avais accepté. Je vous remercie, chers confrères et membres de la Famille salésienne, de la confiance que vous avez mise en moi. Pour accomplir ce service, j’ai compté beaucoup sur la grâce de Dieu et la prière ainsi que sur la collaboration de vous tous.

Nous avons une diversité d’œuvres, de présences salésiennes. Selon les besoins et les situations des jeunes et de la population, la Vice-Province est bien insérée dans le travail d’éducation et d’évangélisation comme service aux Églises locales et aux pays où nous sommes présents. Nous avons un bon nombre de candidats à la vie salésienne et un groupe solide de jeunes confrères qui constituent un potentiel pour l’avenir.

Je dis merci pour les joies et les peines de ces six ans. En regardant le parcours de ces six ans, il y a eu des moments durs, c’est vrai, mais c’est la grâce DEMANDER PARDON… de Dieu qui m’a fait tenir le coup ; c’est la prière qui m’a sauvé ; c’est la fraternité et l’amitié qui m’ont Je demande pardon pour les défaillances, les soutenu. faiblesses, les erreurs, les décisions désagréables. Dans ce sens, il est nécessaire de continuer à chercher des vocations solides, de bien discerner et DIRE « MERCI » POUR TANT DE d’accompagner les candidats à la vie salésienne. Editorial l’ordination sacerdotale, il faut pouvoir constater que connaissons, que nous aimons, que nous suivons et nous n’avons pas perdu l’enthousiasme du début. que nous portons aux jeunes. Le Christ doit rester Les jeunes méritent de rencontrer des coadjuteurs le noyau et le sens de toute notre vie. et des prêtres dynamiques, pleins de zèle, joyeux, heureux, enthousiastes et rayonnants. Je tiens à souligner l’importance de notre «présence» au milieu des jeunes ; la volonté de contact avec les jeunes, notre compassion pour les jeunes pauvres, l’assistance salésienne, notre dévouement, notre générosité et le don de nous-mêmes sans calcul… voilà ce qui doit nous caractériser. Il y a certainement tout un travail de consolidation à faire dans la Vice-Province, même si l’expansion ne peut pas être exclue. Notre nouvelle présence auprès des réfugiés à Palabek est un signe fort ! Notre engagement pour une quatrième œuvre au Burundi reste d’actualité. Mais avant tout, nos communautés ont besoin d’une consistance quantitative et qualitative. Il faut travailler avec de bons laïcs bien préparés. N’oublions pas le CG24 : « Salésiens et Laïcs : communion et partage dans l’esprit et la mission de Don Bosco » ! Nous devons nous rappeler que « Don Bosco est à l’origine d’un vaste mouvement de personnes qui travaillent, de diverses manières, au salut de la jeunesse. » (C.5). Notre Vice-Province présente toute une diversité. Un défi important sera de garder l’unité dans la diversité. « La vie communautaire montre qu’il est possible de vivre fraternellement et d’être unis, même là où les origines ethniques ou raciales sont différentes. » (Africae munus, n. 117). Notre congrégation est internationale, interraciale, interculturelle… Elle dépasse les barrières de la région, du pays, de l’ethnie et de n’importe quelle autre appartenance.

LA CONDITION ESSENTIELLE POUR UN RELIGIEUX… Elle concerne l’absolu de Dieu ! Il s’agit de la primauté spirituelle! Il s’agit de notre profondeur religieuse ! Être des hommes de prière! Avoir une profondeur spirituelle! Vivre l’intériorité! Etre fidèle au rendez-vous quotidien avec Dieu ! Etre des contemplatifs dans l’action ! Notre relation avec le Christ est capitale : Lui, Jésus Christ, doit être notre « trésor», notre « frère aîné » que nous 6

N’AYEZ PAS PEUR… AYEZ CONFIANCE… Ayez confiance dans l’avenir de la Vice-Province ! Ayez confiance dans le nouveau Provincial : il est capable d’animer et de gouverner l’AGL. Il ne le fera pas seul : nous sommes tous là pour l’aider ; nous avons le devoir de l’aider. Collaborons avec le nouveau Provincial et son équipe : soutenons-les pour « avancer au large » dans les eaux des Grands Lacs.

CE N’EST QU’UN AU REVOIR… Il y a un temps pour tout : un temps pour commencer et un temps pour finir… et faire du neuf! Depuis fin septembre 2018, je suis avec le P.François Dufour (ancien provincial de l’Afrique du Sud) pour démarrer le Centre salésien de formation permanente pour notre Région Afrique-Madagascar (SAFCAM = Salesian Formation Center for Africa and Madagascar). Je confie l’avenir au Seigneur : que la volonté de Dieu se fasse ! A vous tous, chers confrères et membres de la Famille salésienne, un très grand merci ! Priez pour moi ! Je continue à prier pour vous et je vous confie tous au Seigneur, à Marie Auxiliatrice et à Don Bosco. LES 125 DOLLARS LES PLUS PRÉCIEUX

QUE J’AIE JAMAIS VUS

Je demande aux Salésiens sdb et à toute la Famille Salésienne dans le monde de faire connaître le bien qui se fait partout, que nous faisons, non seulement nous autres, mais aussi tant de gens, de groupes, d’institutions. Nous devons rendre visible le bien qui se fait car le mal et l’égoïsme se font leur propre publicité avec des moyens puissants. Mes chers lecteurs du Bulletin Salésien, Je vous rejoins dans ces pages avec la joie habituelle et, cette fois-ci, avec une émotion particulière en plus. Et voici pourquoi. Durant la période de Noël, l’un des membres de notre Conseil Général, le Conseiller pour les Missions, est allé passer les fêtes en Ouganda, dans deux présences salésiennes très importantes. Dans la première, il a été accueilli par un bon groupe d’enfants arrachés à la rue et qui vivent maintenant dans la maison salésienne. Le second lieu est le camp de réfugiés de Palabek (Ouganda) où les Salésiens sont arrivés le 31 janvier 2018, il y a un peu moins d’un an, quelques mois après l’arrivée des premiers

réfugiés. À l’époque, nous avions décidé que les Salésiens sdb devaient y vivre et partager leur vie avec ces personnes, qui sont 42 000 aujourd’hui, et leur nombre continue de croître. Lors de notre rencontre de ces premiers jours de l’année 2019, le P. Guillermo Basañes, le Conseiller pour les Missions, m’a remis deux enveloppes. L’une venait de Kampala (Ouganda), précisément du projet éducatif « Children and Life Mission », l’autre du camp de réfugiés de Palabek. Ces enveloppes contenaient également un message. Les jeunes de Kampala, arrachés à leur vie de rue, avaient organisé, avec des groupes religieux du April 2019 - Salesian Bulletin No 17

quartier, une collecte pour offrir quelque chose aux pauvres que je rencontrerais à travers le monde (comme si déjà eux-mêmes n’étaient pas pauvres !). Et avec le message, il y avait cent dollars, fruit de leur générosité et de leurs privations. L’autre enveloppe était similaire et provenait, comme je l’ai dit, du camp de réfugiés où il n’y a pratiquement ni argent ni commerce de nourriture, de vêtements et autres marchandises. Certains réfugiés entreprenants élèvent quelques poulets jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient « aptes » à la consommation pour les échanger contre d’autres produits. C’est ainsi qu’ils réussissent à survivre. Mais désirant aider les plus pauvres, des centaines d’entre eux ont décidé de faire une collecte générale. Ils ont vendu quelques poulets et recueilli quelques pièces qu’ils ont placées dans une enveloppe, en plus de tout ce qu’ils avaient réussi à recueillir au cours des différentes Eucharisties célébrées en plein air, sous une coupole d’arbres (car c’est aujourd’hui leur basilique !). J’ai ouvert l’enveloppe avec émotion et j’y ai trouvé 25 dollars et deux pièces de 100 et 200 shillings, avec un court message me priant de mettre l’argent à la disposition de ceux qui en avaient le plus besoin. J’étais seul dans mon bureau et j’ai eu du mal à contenir mon émotion. C’était un moment tellement émouvant et spécial que je ne pouvais pas le garder pour moi tout seul. C’est pourquoi j’ai décidé de le partager avec vous, dans ce message. Je vous avais déjà fait part de quelque chose de semblable lorsque je vous avais parlé de l’offrande des deux alliances nuptiales si symboliques, offertes pour les pauvres de nos œuvres. J’ai pensé au passage de l’Évangile où Jésus montre à ses disciples la pauvre veuve qui jette tout ce qu’elle possède, deux pièces de monnaie, dans le trésor du temple de Jérusalem ; et le Seigneur loue cette générosité parce qu’elle est la plus authentique. M’est venue à l’esprit la fête de Don Bosco de 1874, rapportée par les « Souvenirs Biographiques » de Don Bosco en évoquant « les petites sommes d’argent des jeunes qui, bien que pauvres, montrèrent leur bon cœur en rassemblant 200 lires, soit 113 chez les apprentis et 87 chez les écoliers. » Don Bosco exprima sa grande joie et sa gratitude avant tout parce que beaucoup de garçons lui avaient alors dit: « N’ayant rien d’autre à vous donner, je vous offre mon cœur. » Et c’est ce que je vois dans ces deux dons, dans ces 125 dollars, les plus précieux que j’aie jamais trouvés dans ma vie. Il m’est impossible de ne pas penser au cœur humain, si grand et si bon ! Malheureusement, il semble que le monde n’ait que de mauvaises nouvelles et des menaces voilées contre lesquelles nous devons 8

nous protéger. Mais ce n’est pas ça. Les nouvelles qui nous parviennent sont souvent dues à des intérêts politiques, économiques ou idéologiques. Or le cœur humain vaut beaucoup plus que cela. Et je voudrais sauver de l’oubli et souligner le fait que tant de belles choses se passent chaque jour. Je voudrais sauver de l’oubli tout le bien qui est fait chaque jour dans le monde de manière anonyme. Je demande aux Salésiens sdb et à toute la Famille Salésienne dans le monde de faire connaître le bien qui se fait partout, que nous faisons, non seulement nous autres mais aussi tant de gens, de groupes, d’institutions. Nous devons rendre visible le bien qui se fait car le mal et l’égoïsme font leur propre publicité avec des moyens puissants et seulement dans l’intérêt de certains. Je n’ai pas encore pu visiter le camp de réfugiés de Palabek. Je ne sais même pas si je pourrai le voir personnellement un jour, mais par l’intermédiaire de mes frères Salésiens, j’adresserai à ces personnes mes remerciements et leur dirai que nous ne les oublions pas, qu’ils comptent beaucoup à nos yeux et que nous portons leurs souffrances dans notre cœur. Ces faits, simples et humbles, que je vous ai racontés, me font également penser que les vœux et les mots aimables ne suffisent pas pour changer la réalité de l’injustice, de l’exploitation et de la marginalisation. Ils nous demandent, ainsi qu’à beaucoup d’entre nous, peut-être à vous, mes chers amis lecteurs, une attitude non conformiste et non passive, mais lucide et critique sur ce que « les autres » veulent nous faire croire ou entendre, bien souvent avec des arguments révélateurs de la peur. En ce sens, notre cher Don Bosco était toujours conscient, intelligent et fort dans sa manière de voir les choses, et bien déterminé à ne pas être complice de ce qui ne visait pas le bien de ses garçons et de leurs familles (quand ils en avaient une). Avec une profonde reconnaissance, je salue tous les habitants, les familles et les jeunes de Palabek et de Kampala. Je reste convaincu que leur message et leur geste iront bien au-delà de ce qu’ils imaginaient; et je leur promets que ces 125 dollars ne laisseront pas seulement un souvenir indélébile dans mon cœur, mais que lorsque je les transmettrai à des personnes qui en ont besoin, elles sauront que leur valeur est immense parce qu’ils proviennent d’un endroit si spécial et sont offerts avec une grande bonté et grandeur d’âme. Avec mes sentiments affectueux, je vous souhaite le plus grand bien.

- Come on, Don Bosco, where is your house? - Not far to go now. It’s just after the next bend. You’ll see the roof. The young priest’s teasing did not satisfy the youngsters, who could not wait to get there. What a treat it was for them each autumn to leave the outskirts of Turin and set out for Don Bosco’s Home. There was always a hard struggle with their employers to negotiate these few days off, but for these young apprentice masons, stone-cutters, wood-workers and labourers, nothing in the world would have tempted them to miss this outing. For Don Bosco, too, this was a treasured event. The great outdoors, the hills of the Becchi, dinner with chestnuts, the barn loaned by his brother Joseph – all this was just what they needed. - Tell us about your brother Joseph. Does he look like you? - Just wait and see. And, by the way, he’s stronger than I am! - And what about the other – the awkward one?

- What do you mean – awkward? It wasn’t easy for him, you know. Like you, he lost his mother when he was young. And when our father married again, Anthony had very little more time with him. I was less than two years old when father died, so Tony had to do most of the work. Naturally he wanted to be the boss, but I didn’t let it bother me. Don Bosco never tired of telling those young orphans about his early life – tidbits of family history to compensate for what life had denied them. - Don Bosco, I can see it! There it is! And like a flock of sparrows, they were off! Don Bosco, not to be outdone, hitched up his cassock and joined the chase. His honour was at stake – he would beat them over the distance. He knew the slope – and its pitfalls – all too well. The dogs came to meet them. - Three cheers for Don Bosco, they shouted. By nightfall, amid the smell of hay and the warmth of the earth, each youngster began to appreciate the home where Don Bosco had been a child. A home for each one. You loved to say Questa è la mia casa. This is my home, pointing to your house. A tumbledown cottage, a shed, a shack. A kitchen and two bedrooms. A barn and a stable. But for you it was a palace in the Becchi kingdom. How many Don Bosco Homes you’ve built! But this one is forever your home, an image of all that children need : family and food on the table. A home where each one counted, where the homeless poor were always welcome. The home you had to leave behind, driven out by an older brother’s jealous anger. The home where, at the end of the day, there was always enough to eat, the daily bread, earned by the sweat of each one. Don Bosco, you never forgot your roots. You came here on pilgrimage to tread the family turf. Your

humble spirit seasons your sanctity. You were the first to gaze in wonder at what God brought about through you. Don Bosco, your great heart is large enough, to be a home for all children in need. The youngsters of the Pinardi shed could say, like Mary’s Child, This is our manger, our Bethlehem. Thousands of young people can now say of Valdocco : Questa è la mia casa. And throughout the world today, millions of children, from the shacks of Brazil to the schools of Japan, can say : This is my home. Thank you for all those who have found a new life in your home. Fr Joseph Nguyen, sdb ordained a priest (Cathedral, Diocese of Kasana-Luweero (Uganda), August 18th, 2018)

was born in a traditional Catholic family. We are a big family of ten. I have six sisters and two brothers and I am the sixth in the family. When I started primary school the family moved to the biggest city in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City. Life in the city with this big family was not an easy one. I remember at the beginning of the new school year, my father sold a piece of land so as to pay for our school fees and buy things for school. And outside of school time we used to work. Even I, at that age, after school, had to operate a sewing machine in our house where there was a small workshop with 25 sewing machines. And when I reached secondary school, after school time, I learned how to repair motorbikes. And when I finished the secondary school, my father helped me to open a shop for repairing and selling motorbikes. At that time I also tried to get a degree in mechanics. Since my childhood, my youth was always study

and work together. I had no idea about the Salesians and I never thought that one day I would join that congregation and become a priest. That was totally different from what my father and I were planning for me to become. But everything is the will of God and God was working in me. I used to like playing football a lot. And in a big city like Ho Chi Minh City, finding a free football field was not easy. Everything you had to pay for, even to play football. Some of my friends told me that there was a free football field in the place called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ba Thon Parishâ&#x20AC;?, run by the Salesians of Don Bosco and that was how I came to know the Salesians. I used to fear the priests a lot; to meet them was something beyond my will; I only went to see a priest when I wanted to go for confession. I always kept a distance with them. But when I came to the Salesian house, the priests there were different to the other April 2019 - Salesian Bulletin No 17

Witness priests I met before, I did not fear them or distance myself much. And I was also very surprised to see for the first time in my life a priest playing football. I came to the Salesian house to play football on Sundays. After some months a brother saw me playing and asked me to come and join the “Come and See” group, which I did. I came every Sunday to play and to pray sometimes. Time went on and for two years I was asked to join the aspirants, but I refused, until the third year, when a Salesian told me that I could not stay in the “Come and See” group all my life, and asked if I would try to join the aspirantate. I said I would. And that was how I became an aspirant of Don Bosco. But in my mind I was not really convinced about my vocation to become a Salesian. To become an aspirant, I needed some documents from the parish priest where I was living. I asked my father to go with me to ask for the documents. When we met that parish priest, he told me to go out and he talked with my father. After five minutes, my father came out and told me that he could not give the documents because he did not know me, or I had to join the diocesan vocational group and he would be my spiritual director, and I said no.. And so we went to another parish where the priest did not know me, and I did not know him either, but he said, “let us see how God is working on you”. And I got the document of good conduct from that parish priest, and after that he used to help me a lot in my vocation. After two years of aspirantate, there was a significant moment in my life which left a great mark. In the Salesian houses of Vietnam, we have the tradition of celebrating the solemnity of Mary Help of Christians, In the mass the faithful receive a picture of Mary Help of Christian with some words written on the back. That was Sunday 23rd of May, 2007. During the Mass of Mary Help of Christians for aspirants, we were almost one hundred. I received Mother Mary’s picture with the following words: “Remember where you are coming from and where you are going.” Those words really disturbed me. But my mind said no, maybe those fathers and brothers were trying to convince us to join the Salesians. The next day, on the 24th of May, 2007 I went back to the Ba Thon Parish and joined the Holy Mass of Mary Help of Christian and received a picture once again. I put it away, went back to my place and there I was really shocked because I saw the same words written on the back I had received before. That was really a turning point in my life. I now knew that my vocation was genuine, it was not just love of football; Mother Mary was the one who brought me to Salesian house. From that time onwards I became serious with my vocation. 12

And the process of becoming a Salesian just continued like that, but the idea to become a priest was not there because I had a bad experience with priests. When I was a child, I was in the St. Teresa choir. One time we were passing the priest’s house to go and practice songs; a priest came out and shouted and made me ashamed for no reason; from that time I disliked meeting priests. Later, when I was a novice, I told my novice master that I wanted to become a coadjutor brother, not a priest. He asked me why, I told him about that bad experience I had with the priests before. He said, “no, you will be a priest; that bad experience you had will make a good priest of you like Don Bosco had when he was a child”. That is the reason why I chose to be a candidate for the priesthood when I was in the Novitiate. When I was in my third year of philosophy, the idea of becoming a missionary came to mind, but I strongly rejected it, because I knew that to go to an unknown place, I had to speak another language, that was not for me. But the more I rejected it, the stronger it became in my heart. When I wrote the letter to become a missionary, I found back the peace in my heart and my mind. And that was how I became a Salesian missionary of Don Bosco. I was ordained on the 18th August, 2018. And even the place of ordination was a mystery for me; that was really the will of God. With the consent of my provincial (AGL), having done my theology studies at Utume, Nairobi, I was preparing everything to be ordained in Vietnam. I contacted the Bishop of Dong Nai Diocese, and he was very willing to ordain me and another deacon of his own Diocese. But after one month everything changed. The bishop said that he got some problems with the Government regarding my ordination. I tried other places, everything was negative. At the end, I prayed “God, if your will is for me to be ordained in Uganda, let it be done according to your will; I surrender all to you.” And that is how my Salesian vocation is. I find my vocation like that of the prophet Jonah. When God sent him, he refused but at the end he carried out his mission. When God calls you, there is nothing that can stop it, because he has a plan for you, you have to discover God’s plan and follow it. I would like to close the story of my life, my vocation with the words of the prophet Jeremiah, when he discovered God’s plan for him. “I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for.” (Jeremiah 29,11). My Vocation Journey

y names are Mwebe Joseph Kasinga, born in 1986 and baptized in the same year. When I was reaching school age my parents sent me to a nearby Anglican primary school (Kibuye Primary School), as there were no catholic schools near our home in Makindye. However, the usual clashes between Mum and Dad and the life expenses could not enable us to stay in the city and so my mum decided to take us - the children - to the countryside, Bombo-Bembe. On my arrival in Bombo, I was taken still to a nearby village affordable Muslim primary school (Bembe Hill Primary School), from P3 to P5. Sometimes while at school and at home, I could see white men riding a motor-cycle passing by our home. As young children we waved to them and they responded so kindly. I really admired their kindness. I came to

Waldemar (now working in Sudan). I started frequenting a Roman Catholic Church while in Primary 4. Every Saturday I went for Catechism classes. Very often on Saturday and Sunday I joined in the Oratory for lots of games, musings, beautiful films and music - accompanied by the unforgettable lovely animation of the Salesians. This was the same period that I joined the group of the Altar Servants. I will always remember the picnic that preceded our initiation as Altar Servants at a certain beach in Entebbe. My group ascending to the Altar the following Sunday will never go out of my mind. My desire and petition in the personal childish prayer was to stay at the Altar the whole of my life. For Primary 6 and 7, I got the chance to study in a Catholic school (St. Josephâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bombo mixed Primary School) near the parish church. Witness ronment and the behavior there were really welcoming so much so that I really felt myself at home in a large Christian family; the teachers were so caring and committed to our education and human development. I should frankly say that if it had not been for the restless care and commitment of our teachers, my dreams would not have come true. My sincere gratitude to all my teachers in Bombo mixed. After my primary education, I was admitted together with nine other seminarians as the pioneers of St. Kizito Minor Seminary Nandere in the whole of Kasana Luweero Diocese. For 6 years I stayed in Nandere for my secondary studies and spiritual formation. I can still recall that every year during the long holidays, the Salesians set up memorable youth camps , that is : vocational camps, “come and see” programs, outings and lots of other beautiful and joyful Oratory gatherings that were attractive …. vocation-wise. It was such Salesian environments that interested me. I got seriously interested in reading Salesian literature while in the 5th year of my secondary studies. Indeed, by the end of the 6th year, I was already determined to take the decision of joining the Salesians. The Rector of St. Kizito Minor Seminary-Nandere recommended me to join the Salesians and Fr. Gianni Uboldi welcomed me as an aspirant in January 2007. It is from Fr. Gianni that I first tasted the Salesian way of life, the Salesian culture. I will still remember his words by email while in Bujumbura as an aspirant : Joseph, learn French, work hard and

pray. Throughout the 11 years of my initial salesian formation, I had good moments, some others were really trying but such are the moments that have fashioned me. I will always remember the beautiful moments of my initial formation spent in Bombo and Buterere as an aspirant, in Gatenga as a prenovice, at Rango Novitiate, at Gitarama-Kabgayi Philosophicum, my 2nd year of practical training in Rango community and the beautiful moments spent at Utume Theologicum…I thank God for such moments in my life. I was ordained a deacon 19 May 2017 and a priest on 18 August 2018……To God be the Glory. To our youngsters in AGL I say this : I congratulate you for the most precious gift you have received from God : life. Please be proud of it. Each one of us has a vocation and we should be helped to grasp it, follow it, develop it, let it grow, and let it shine in the mother Church. On our path of life God has put people to help us go forward; our parents, other family members, friends, teachers, religious men and women, and many other people of good will… all such people are to be highly esteemed, respected, valued and honored. I suggest that any youth reading this article out there may learn to make the best use of such guides in discerning God’s will for each one of you; we are here for you. “You have received without paying, so give without being paid” (Matthew 10, 8). VII. SOME POSSIBLE POINTERS TO HOLINESS. Some dynamisms to help young people and all of us on this journey

that they cannot be saints, because they will never succeed in being so in the manner of some saints proposed to them as models. - So, even “small sizes” (Adrienne von Speyr) can, in their own way, be perfect. Paradise is like a garden: there is the humble violet or the sublime lily and the rose. - Every saint is a word of God made flesh. There are no two equal saints. Imitating the saints does not mean copying them. Everyone needs one’s own time and has one’s own path. - What word of God am I? - What does this call me to? - What word of God do I understand the young person next to me is? How to help him/her understand and live it? - Holiness makes one responsible. There is something that only YOU can do.The experience of a “healthy dependence”. The path of holiness is commitment. Holiness is lived together and it generates communion. Saints for sure, but saints together!

- Communion: holiness is experienced and achieved together. Saints are always together (even integrating the male and female component). Where there is one of them, we always find many others. The holiness of daily life makes communion flourish and is a “generator of relationships”. - Creativity and inventiveness of the Spirit. Holiness is never repetitive: the 31 groups of the Salesian Family – and others undergoing recognition – have flourished from Don Bosco, and they have sometimes been able to express very different sensitivities, even if they are converging towards their root. Don Bosco himself drew on this plurality and polyphony of holiness that preceded him: Ignatius of Loyola and Philip Neri, for example, not only Francis de Sales, etc.

VIII. PATHS OF HOLINESS TODAY

- “We must not put into sanctity more perfection than what is really there” (Adrienne von Speyr). That is, heroic Christian living is not heroism; Christian perfection is not superhero perfectionism. - We know that some are holy, but we never know who is holier than somebody else. God alone knows the hearts. There is a special beauty in everything. There are many paths to get to Heaven. One should not ask of a person what he/she cannot and should not give. IV. JÉSUS EST LE BONHEUR QUE VOUS, CHERS JEUNES, VOUS CHERCHEZ ° C’était le grand défi que lançait saint Jean-Paul II au cours de la Veillée de Prière des XVèmes JMJ (Rome 19 août 2000) quand il disait aux jeunes du monde entier : « En réalité, c’est Jésus que vous cherchez quand vous rêvez de bonheur. C’est lui qui vous attend quand rien de ce que vous trouvez ne vous satisfait ; c’est lui, la beauté qui vous attire tellement ; c’est lui qui vous provoque par la soif de radicalité qui vous empêche de vous habituer aux compromis ; c’est lui qui vous pousse à faire tomber les masques qui faussent la vie ; c’est lui qui lit dans vos cœurs les décisions les plus profondes que d’autres voudraient étouffer. C’est Jésus qui suscite en vous le désir de faire de votre vie quelque chose de grand, la volonté de suivre un idéal, le refus de vous laisser envahir par la médiocrité, le courage de vous engager avec humilité et persévérance pour vous rendre meilleurs, pour améliorer la société, en la rendant plus humaine et plus fraternelle. »

V. CHEMINS DE SAINTETE AUJOURD’HUI A LA LUMIERE DE NOTRE HISTOIRE COMME FAMILLE SALESIENNE.

VI. QUE VEUT DIRE : « La sainteté pour toi aussi !» ?

- C’est une chose proche, réelle, concrète, possible. C’est même la vocation fondamentale . - Être saint n’est pas difficile, c’est même facile, et Dieu nous attend au ciel après notre chemin de sainteté. « Ce qui a été dit jusqu’à présent n’implique pas un esprit inhibé, triste, aigri, mélancolique - Le saint est capable de vivre joyeux et avec le sens de l’humour. » (Gaudete et Exultate 122) - Le chemin de la sainteté ne peut pas contourner la dimension de la croix, mais il est aussi plein de joie : « Ici nous faisons consister la sainteté à vivre très joyeux. »

- La sainteté n’éloigne pas de ses devoirs, de ses intérêts, de ses affections. Mais elle les assume dans la charité. La sainteté est la perfection de la charité et répond donc au besoin fondamental de l’homme : être aimé et aimer. L’on est d’autant plus saint que l’on est plus homme parce que «la vie n’a pas une mission, mais elle est mission.» Il y a beaucoup de chemins sur la voie de la sainteté. La sainteté est participation à la vie de Dieu, non la perfection moralement comprise et que l’on prétend obtenir seulement avec ses propres forces ; elle n’est pas non plus un objectif qui ne serait accessible qu’aux « meilleurs » au sens des « plus préparés ». Elle est avant tout un accueil, puisant dans les outils de l’Église, parmi lesquels une vie sacramentelle et une piété solides. - Ensemble, c’est plus facile. La sainteté, c’est marcher ensemble et faire l’expérience de la communion.

VIII. DES CHEMINS DE SAINTETÉ AUJOURD’HUI ? - « Il ne faut pas mettre dans la sainteté plus de perfection qu’il n’y en a réellement. » (Adrienne von Speyr). C’est-à-dire : l’héroïcité chrétienne n’est pas l’héroïsme ; la perfection chrétienne n’est pas le perfectionnisme du super héros.

- Nous savons que certains sont saints, mais nous ne savons jamais qui est plus saint qu’un autre. Dieu seul connaît les cœurs. Il y a de la beauté en toute chose. Il y a beaucoup de chemins pour arriver au ciel. On ne doit pas exiger d’une personne ce qu’elle ne peut pas et ne doit pas donner. Dire cela est encourageant, revigorant. Autrement beaucoup seront convaincus qu’ils ne peuvent pas être des saints parce qu’ils ne réussiront jamais à l’être à la manière de certains saints qui leur sont - La communion : la sainteté s’expérimente proposés comme modèles. ensemble et se réalise ensemble. Les saints sont toujours ensemble (en intégrant aussi la composante masculine et féminine). - Chaque saint est une parole de Dieu incarnée. Il n’y a pas deux saints identiques. Imiter les saints ne veut pas dire les copier. Chacun d’eux vit dans son époque et suit son propre chemin. - Quelle parole de Dieu suis-je? - À quoi cela m’appelle-t-il ? - Suis-je capable de percevoir quelle parole de Dieu « est » le jeune que je côtoie ? Comment l’aider à - La communion ecclésiale. Personne n’est «de Paul, comprendre cette « parole » et à la vivre ? de Kephas, de Barnabas », mais nous sommes tous « au Christ, et le Christ est à Dieu » (cf. 1Co 3,4.23). Être Famille Salésienne ne signifie pas - La sainteté responsabilise. Il y a quelque chose que absolutiser le message de Don Bosco, mais le TOI seul peux faire. valoriser en l’intégrant dans l’ensemble de l’Église. Certaines choses ne peuvent pas être demandées - L’expérience d’une saine dépendance. Le chemin à Don Bosco, parce que Dieu les a données à de la sainteté est engagement. On vit ensemble et l’Église à travers d’autres. On les demandera alors l’on génère la communion. ETRENNE 2019 Après 4 ans où les posters de l’Étrenne avaient profité du talent de dessinateurs professionnels, la solution graphique adoptée cette année remet au centre une photo. Mais pas prise par des professionnels ; plutôt, quelque chose de très commun et près de la réalité quotidienne des enfants et des jeunes, qui, dans le monde entier, appartenant à des cultures et traditions très différentes, tous avec leur ‘smartphone’ immortalisent et partagent les situations de tous les jours. Sur l’image, un vrai ‘selfie’, on voit le Recteur Majeur, une Fille de Marie Auxiliatrice, et autres jeunes et jeunes adultes, ceux qu’on rencontre facilement à l’oratoire. Sur-imprimé sur la photo on trouve le thème de l’Étrenne de cette année, avec des particularités : le slogan mis sous la phrase évangélique « afin que ma joie soit en vous » (Jn 15,11) est représenté comme un ‘hashtag’, dans la forme typique des ‘histoires’ d’Instagram, et il a l’auréole. Sainteté et réseaux sociaux, sainteté et monde des jeunes ne sont pas en contraste, bien au contraire : la sainteté doit être partagée comme un ‘hashtag’ justement : #lasantitàancheperte #lasaintetépourtoiaussi. STRENNA 2019 After four years in which the Strenna posters made use of the talents of professional graphic designers, this year’s graphic solution places at its center an image that is as realistic as can be : photographic shots. But not of professionals, but rather something very common and close to the daily reality of children and young people who all over the world, from very different cultures and traditions, immortalize and share everyday situations they capture with their smartphones. In the image, a true selfie, appear the Rector Major, a Daughter of Mary Help of Christians, and other teens and young adults, like those one easily meets in the oratory. Superimposed on the photo is the theme of this year’s Strenna, with some peculiarities: the motto itself, placed under the evangelical call “So that my joy may be in you” (Jn 15,11) is represented as a hashtag, in the typical form of Instagram stories, and is accompanied by a halo. endant 18 ans, j’ai travaillé au Centre de Formation Don Bosco de la province de BEN (Belgique et Pays-Bas) et les 8 dernières années en tant que responsable de ce Centre. En fonction de ma mission, j’ai été amenée à approfondir le charisme et la vie de Don Bosco. C’était mon travail – avec mon équipe – d’actualiser l’esprit et l’approche pédagogique de Don Bosco et de les transmettre aux nombreux collaborateurs laïcs dans toutes nos œuvres de la Province. Nous l’avons fait avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme et de créativité. Au cours de ces années, Don Bosco est devenu pour moi beaucoup plus qu’un « job ». Peu à peu, il est devenu une vocation et un choix de vie. Rendre service là où on a besoin de moi est ce que j’ai promis à Don Bosco. Ces dernières années, la Vice- Province africaine de l’AGL m’a invitée deux fois, chaque fois pendant un mois, pour partager mes connaissances sur Don Bosco et son système éducatif à travers plusieurs programmes de formation avec les laïcs et les salésiens. Ce furent des occasions uniques de faire connaissance avec cette jeune province en plein développement. Entretemps, j’ai lancé avec eux un projet visant à créer un centre de formation permanente pour l’AGL, adapté aux besoins locaux. Mais il s’est passé encore autre chose… Au fil de la collaboration et des échanges, mon engagement pour l’AGL est devenu un appel de Don Bosco pour m’engager dans un nouveau choix de vie. J’ai réalisé que ce contexte avec son enthousiasme salésien avait besoin de moi. Oseraisje abandonner mon travail, ma famille, mes amis, mes activités et mes engagements, bref toute ma vie en Europe? Pourrais-je, en tant que missionnaire laïque, mettre ma personne et mon expertise acquise au service de cette province en pleine expansion? Ma tête ne le savait pas trop mais mon cœur a dit oui!

le Bureau des projets de l’AGL et m’engagerai également dans la formation salésienne et la communication sociale. La province de BEN me soutient pour que cela soit possible sur le plan administratif et financier : un beau et puissant signe de solidarité et de coopération transfrontalière dans la congrégation. Grand merci, chers frères en Don Bosco!

Le 18 janvier, au cours d’une célébration dans la communauté d’Oud-Heverlee où j’ai travaillé toutes ces années, j’ai été bénie et envoyée en mission. Le 26 janvier, j’ai dit au revoir à ma famille, mes amis, mes collègues et la famille salésienne en Belgique. Le 27 janvier, j’ai été chaleureusement accueillie en AGL, à Kigali, au Rwanda, pour commencer ma mission. Avec la bénédiction de Dieu et la joie de Don Bosco, nous allons commencer une coopération salésienne fructueuse qui incarne le rêve de la Congrégation de Don Bosco de partager pleinement la mission avec les laïcs. À travers des consultations et avec l’aide Je confie ma personne et ma mission aux des deux Provinciaux (BEN et AGL), ce choix a soins paternels de Don Bosco et aux soins maternels été précisé et transformé en une coopération et une de Marie Auxiliatrice, celle qui vient à notre aide. mission concrètes. pimaque Nizeyimana, a student of Lycée de Kigali shared what touched him from the message of our Holy Father pope Francis to the young people as presented by Sr Lumière at the FMA MISSION RUGUNGA It was on 21st October 2018, when we gathered in the mission of the FMA, to receive the great message of our Holy Father addressed to us, the young people. This message gave us a lot of encouragement that wherever we are, we have the mission of sharing the gospel of Christ to everyone. The Holy Father continues : “Life is a mission, do not be inactive”. This touched our minds and hearts as we were listening, and helped us to understand that we were born to evangelize and now it is time to rise, stand firm and go forth to share .This will begin in us, in our families, in our schools and wherever we are. “We want to be the witnesses of Christ and everyone has something to give to others” this was the slogan of everybody who was present. The most interesting moment was the time to move to the groups, where everybody could share freely from the heart, some could say : I feel encouraged that I am a missionary by baptism, so I can evangelize wherever I am and in whichever situation I am, others could say: I feel that this is the best time to put into practice, when many people, especially the young, are carried away by the pleasures of the world. Finally, we say to our Holy Father that he has spoken to us who listen and reflect, we promise him to be faithful young people, and be the channels of the gospel to others in our simple way of life by the grace of God.

20th November 2018 FMA Rugunga met the young people in Mushishiro parish, with the session on vocational discernment; this occasion brought many young people together, those who are in secondary school and with those who have already finished. It was a wonderful and a touching moment to see the youth happy and ready to respond to God wherever He calls them.

FMA News FMA involved in the program of animation with the young people (Animators) who are being prepared to go out to proclaim Christ to the children in the oratory. The animators were very eager to receive the session on animation skills and art & craft. This took place in Gatenga .

The end of the 2018 school year for both nursery and primary in Ecole Privée Marie Auxiliatrice (EPMA), involved all the children of the school together with their parents and the teaching and non-teaching staff. This celebration took place on 10th November for Nursery and 17th November for primary pupils. The theme of the whole day was to give thanks to God for journeying with everyone throughout the year. On 17th we began the program by the celebration of the Holy Eucharist presided by the SDB provincial, Fr Pierre Célestin Ngoboka. The day was colorful. The head teacher, Sr Furaha thanked everyone and reminded the parents and the children that holiday is not only the time to visit friends, watch television, but also to take books and revise. The State Minister of education Rev Mr. Isaac Munyakazi was also in that celebration and thanked everybody, starting from the sisters, teachers and parents for the efforts they put to make the children perform well. He also participated in the price giving to those who highly performed. He gave also the certificates to all primary six who had done graduation that day. Every graduate received a picture of Mary Help of Christians to remind them that Mary will always be there for them. The entertainment took place, all in thanksgiving to the Lord.

On 28th December 2018 on the feast of the Holy Innocents, a good number of children paid a visit to the FMA Rugunga to wish the sisters Merry Christmas; these children are from St Michel parish; they are in the group of “chanteurs à l’ étoile” . The children presented the story of the nativity and different songs of Christmas. The aim of the 28

visit is to share the joy of Christmas with every one through their talents; this initiative also helps them to reach out to other children who are most in need using the offerings they get from this initiative. We thank the Lord for these little ones who evangelize in their little ways.

Histoire « Tout sauf renoncer à voler alors que nous sommes nés pour les sommets ». Dans son commentaire de l’Étrenne 2019 le Recteur Majeur nous offre quelques indicateurs possibles de la sainteté. « Dieu nous appelle à la sainteté à travers de petits gestes, des choses simples. Tout peut nous aider, tout, sauf le renoncement à voler alors que nous sommes nés pour les sommets. Ce que je veux dire est magnifiquement exprimé dans une belle histoire qui parle du dilemme entre se tenir au niveau du sol ou s’envoler vers Dieu, vers la sainteté, vers les sommets.

Voici l’histoire. Il y avait une fois un paysan qui marchait sur un sentier de haute montagne. Voici qu’entre les rochers, près des sommets, il trouva un œuf étrange : trop gros pour être un œuf de poule et trop petit pour être celui d’une autruche. Ne sachant pas ce que c’était, il décida de l’emporter avec lui. Arrivé à la maison, il le montra à sa femme. Celleci avait une dinde qui couvait dans son nid. Voyant que l’œuf avait plus ou moins la taille des autres, elle alla le mettre sous la queue de la dinde. Les poussins commencèrent à casser la coquille, tout comme le bébé dans l’œuf pris en montagne. Et alors qu’il semblait être un animal différent des autres, les différences n’étaient pas de nature à le faire détonner du reste de la couvée, même s’il s’agissait d’un petit condor. Bien que couvé par une dinde, il avait une autre origine. Comme il n’avait pas d’autre modèle pour apprendre, le petit condor imitait ce qu’il voyait faire aux dindonneaux. Il suivait la grande dinde à la recherche de vers, de graines et de déchets. Il creusait la terre et, sautillant, essayait d’arracher les fruits des buissons. Il vivait dans le poulailler et avait peur des chiens qui venaient souvent lui voler de la nourriture. La nuit, il grimpait aux branches du caroubier par peur des belettes et autres prédateurs. Il vivait ainsi, imitant ce qu’il voyait faire aux autres. Parfois, il se sentait un peu étrange. Surtout quand il se retrouvait tout seul. Mais cela n’arrivait pas souvent. En fait, les dindons ne supportent pas la solitude ni que d’autres restent seuls. C’est une espèce qui aime se déplacer toujours en troupeau, qui aime gonfler la poitrine pour impressionner, ouvrir la queue en éventail en laissant traîner les

ailes. Devant ce qui les frappe, la réponse immédiate est une grosse moquerie. La caractéristique des dindons et des dindes est la suivante : malgré leurs grandes dimensions, ils ne volent pas. Or un midi, alors que le ciel dégagé était traversé de nuages blancs, le petit animal fut surpris de voir des oiseaux étranges voler majestueusement, presque sans bouger leurs ailes. Il ressentit un choc dans tout son être, quelque chose comme un appel venant de loin et qui voulait le réveiller au plus profond de ses fibres. Ses yeux, habitués à toujours regarder le sol à la recherche de nourriture, ne parvenaient pas à distinguer ce qui se passait dans les hauteurs. Son cœur fut envahi d’une profonde nostalgie : pourquoi ne puis-je pas, moi aussi, voler comme ça ? Et son cœur, très inquiet, battait la chamade. À ce moment-là, un dindon s’approcha de lui pour lui demander ce qu’il faisait. Il se moqua de lui quand il entendit son histoire, lui disant que c’était un romantique et qu’il devrait arrêter de plaisanter : eux, les dindons, étaient bien autre chose et donc il devait revenir sur terre. Il lui proposa alors de l’accompagner dans un endroit où il avait trouvé beaucoup de fruits mûrs et une variété de vers. Désorienté, le pauvre animal se remit de sa rêverie et suivit son compagnon qui le ramena au poulailler. Il reprit sa vie normale, toujours tourmenté par une profonde insatisfaction intérieure qui le faisait se sentir étrange. Il n’a jamais découvert sa véritable identité de condor. Devenu vieux, il mourut un jour. Oui, malheureusement, il est mort exactement comme il avait vécu. Et dire qu’il était né pour les sommets ! N’ayons pas peur de tendre vers les sommets de Dieu. Celebration of the Strenna of the Rector Major On 5th January 2019 in the morning, members of the different groups of the Salesian family began to arrive at the Provincial house in Kigali. The celebration began at 9:00 am with the prayer from the novices, after which the provincial welcomed all the members and wished them a merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. The festival, massively attended, saw all groups of the salesian family working in AGL represented and from all the three countries that make up the province; Rwanda Uganda and Burundi. Present were the Salesians of Don Bosco, Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, Salesian cooperators, Association of Mary Help of Christians (ADMA), Don Bosco missionary community, old students, Volunteers of Don Bosco and friends of Don Bosco from Namugongo. In his welcoming speech, after wishing participants a happy feast and giving them a warm welcome, Father Provincial explained the term “ Strenna” which he said means a gift or a wish of good luck that is usually given around Christmas time in the Roman culture. So the strenna is a gift from the Rector Major to the Salesian family, he added. To sum up his speech, 30

he gave us the synthesis of the strenna according to him, “the joy of holiness”. He concluded with hints on the program of animation and governance (PAG) wishing everyone to live that joy of holiness. Presenting the strenna which was done in two parts, first the presentation and then the video, the preacher of the day, father Benjamin GAHUNGU sdb formator at the novitiate, said that this gift from the Rector Major is given in two points; “ so that my joy may be in you” John 15:11, and “holiness for you too”. He added that this strenna is inspired by the holy scriptures and the teachings and tradition of the Church and the congregation. He said that it is mostly inspired by the recent encyclical letter of Pope Francis; “Gaudete et Exultate”. He then dug into the tradition of the Congregation and of the Church quoting different popes and different Rectors Major showing how they have always insisted on holiness, to show that this exaltation is not new. Among the popes, he highlighted pope Saint John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis. Rectors Major include almost all the successors of Don Bosco showing how holiness and joy have been at the

heart of the congregation. He added that in the pedagogy of Don Bosco, two words are very important; joy and happiness. He gave the example of Dominic Savio, a student of Don Bosco who saw joy as a means of attaining holiness, who considered joy and holiness to be same, hard to dissociate. This young saint discovered that the source of true joy is the frequentation of the sacraments especially the Eucharist and the sacrament of Reconciliation. Still looking at the tradition, he showed us that “holiness for all” has also been developed in the past by saints such as Francis de Sales who said that we can be saints wherever we are and that anyone can become a saint at any age. For Don Bosco, what matters is holiness, all other things are there to help us attain holiness. As for pope Benedict XVI, many times we contemplate big saints, he says, and we forget the small saints who sanctify themselves everyday, making small steps. Lastly, pope Francis in “Gaudete et Exultate”, paragraph 14 writes; “ to be a saint, we don’t need to be a priest or a religious, we are all called to be saints, accomplishing well our daily duties, everyone can become a saint”. So, who can become a saint? The answer is, everyone can become a saint; educators, workers, children, religious and the faithful. How become a saint? Consecrated or not, live your engagement with joy, be holy wherever you are. Married? Love your spouse. Worker? Be holy accomplishing with all your efforts, honestly, the task that is given to you. Political leader? Fight for the rights of those you represent. We know that in our salesian family holiness is possible and real, salesian holiness is with and for the youths: we sanctify ourselves in the midst of the young people, concluded the lecturer. After this presentation, the video of the strenna was projected and in this, the Rector Major puts it clear that happiness is the dream of everyone today,

tomorrow and in eternity. Don Bosco aims at creating good Christians and honest citizens. Holiness consists of being happy, he added, saying that to be happy is to thank God every morning for the miracle of life, to say that life is worth living despite challenges. He concluded saying that we should never give up on holiness. At 11:00 am, we met in the church of Mary Help of Christians at IFAK for the Eucharistic celebration marvellously animated by the post novices. The provincial, in his homily, insisted on holiness of daily life on a daily basis, living a simple life inspired by the gospel. He also admired the beauty of the Salesian Family. After mass we marched to the dining hall of the school where the reception was organised. Presentations from the prenovices and the post novices contributed to the joy of the day.The provincial delegate for the Salesian family, Father Jean Bosco Ntirenganya made a speech saying that the most important thing is to meet as a family and then to share the gift of the Rector Major (the Strenna). The provincial once more addressed the assembly and this time called for tangible actions of the Salesian family insisting that he does not want people who show up only for the feasts but people who work for the young. The good night talk was given by Sister Delphine, FMA, followed by the blessing from the provincial, which saw us departing back to our homes at around 3:30pm. The day was wonderful and a real success thanks to the provincial and his council, the delegate of the salesian family and in a special way to members of the association of Mary Help of Christians for their selfless giving towards the success of this day and also for sharing with us; “ what ADMA is”. Célébration des vœux perpétuels de quatre Salésiens Des trois pays de l’AGL sont venus parents, amis, connaissances, … de quatre jeunes salésiens, Christian Nsanzumuhire, Dons Kennedy Oyergiu, Pierre Claver Bucindika et Jean-Marie Hitimana qui prononcent leurs vœux perpétuels ce 14 juillet 2018, dans la chapelle Marie Auxiliatrice de Kimihurura/ Ifak. A 10h 15 a commencé la procession à partir de l’ancienne chapelle vers la nouvelle. Arrivés là, le Père Jean Bosco Ntirenganya, au nom du directeur de la communauté, en congé, souhaita la bienvenue aux fidèles. « Que nous offrions nos prières d’aujourd’hui pour nos quatre frères » : nous exhortat-il et puis il demanda au Père provincial Camiel SWERTVAHGER de présider la concélébration eucharistique. Avant de prononcer l’homélie, le Père Provincial fait un bref dialogue avec les futurs profès. Dans son homélie, il dit que les vœux sont un signe de l’amour entre l’Appelant et l’appelé. Le corps et le cœur doivent être donnés au Christ intégralement mais des deux le plus important est le cœur, et Dieu doit y occuper une place de choix pour celui qui s’engage à le servir. Revenant sur les trois conseils évangéliques, il insista sur l’obéissance en faisant référence à l’écoute d’une part de Dieu et de l’autre des Supérieurs. Et cela en menant une vie sobre tout en aimant ses confrères et les jeunes, surtout les plus pauvres. Nous prions pour qu’ils soient animés par le Da mihi animas de Don Bosco, persévèrent dans leur « oui » comme la Vierge Marie et qu’ils restent fidèles à leurs engagements pour toujours. Pour que cela se réalise ils ont besoin de la grâce divine pour être la lumière et le sel du monde. Maintenant vient le moment fort ! Les quatre confrères se prosternent sur le sol pendant le chant de la litanie des saints. Ce geste est un signe d’abandon total à Dieu pour toute la vie. Après ils se sont agenouillés pour prononcer, chacun à son tour, ses vœux perpétuels dans les mains du Père 32

Provincial qui représente le Recteur Majeur, après quoi ils se sont dirigés vers l’autel pour attester les paroles prononcées par leur signature. Ensuite le Provincial récita une longue prière et leur remit la croix que portent les Salésiens à vœux perpétuels. A la fin de la messe, au nom de ses confrères, Christian Nsanzumuhire prit la parole et remercia Dieu; ensuite il remercia ceux qui les ont aidés au cours de leur cheminement : les parents, les formateurs, les confrères, et beaucoup d’autres personnes, sans oublier les organisateurs de la fête de ce jour,…il nous demandait de les porter dans nos prières. L’Eucharistie prit fin vers 13h30 et les festivités se sont poursuivies dans une salle de l’ancien atelier (ATS) où a été prise l’agape fraternelle et où furent prononcés quelques discours de circonstance. Le représentant des parents des quatre profès perpétuels, Monsieur Berchmans Manirabogoye, demanda aux parents de laisser leurs enfants se consacrer à Dieu et ne pas étouffer leur désir de servir le Seigneur. Il ajouta que les jeunes d’aujourd’hui, souvent auteurs de beaucoup de maux et impliqués dans des actes indignes, ont besoin d’un « contrepoids » ; - ce contrepoids pourrait être un salésien -, pour les orienter vers les justes chemins et retourner à Dieu. L’orchestre de Kamuli, de Gatenga et la troupe (itorero) des élèves de Kimihurura égayèrent les invités par leurs chants et danses traditionnelles. Les festivités se clôturèrent par la remise de cadeaux aux nouveaux profès. News SALESIAN SEMINAR ON THE PALABEK PROJECT (GULU). From August 31 to September 3, 2018, a seminar was held in the city of Gulu (Uganda) on the intervention of the Salesians in Palabek, a settlement in northern Uganda that hosts South Sudanese refugees. Those who participated were : Father Martin Lasarte, from the Mission Department (Rome), Father Jose Matthew, Provincial Superior of New Delhi (India), Father Jose Padinjareparampil, in charge of the Salesian work in the Kakuma refugee camp (Kenya), Father George Manemparampil, coordinator of the Salesian mission offices. On the side of the Vice-Province of Africa of the Great Lakes (AGL) participated: Father Pierre-Célestin Ngoboka, Provincial Superior, Brother John Njuguna, Provincial Treasurer, Father Jean-Pierre Turabanye, Provincial Delegate for Youth Ministry, Father Raphaël Katanga, Director of the Planning and Development Office (PDO), Father Lazar Arasu, Rector of the Salesian Work of Palabek. For the AGLdelegation, the main objective of this seminar was to learn from the experiences of others in order to provide a quality service to the refugees. In addition, it was necessary to define the criteria of the Salesian identity in this new work

and to plan its future. On the sidelines of the meeting, participants heard witnesses from refugees On the second day, the Archbishop of Gulu came to talk about the situation in northern Uganda during the civil war and the causes of the insecurity in southern Sudan. He thanked the Salesian Congregation for having accepted to found a work inside the camp. On the third day the participants had the opportunity to visit the settlement; they were made aware of the living conditions and the progress of the construction work of the vocational training centre and the Salesian community. The fourth day was devoted to sharing, decision-making and strategies to be implemented. In the near future, a Strategic Plan and an Action Plan will be developed to guide the work of the Salesians in the camp. INSTALLATION DE

MONSEIGNEUR ANTOINE KAMBANDA COMME NOUVEL ARCHEVEQUE DE KIGALI Dimanche 27 janvier 2019, Monseigneur Antoine Kambanda a été installé comme nouvel Archevêque de Kigali durant la messe qui a été introduite par Monseigneur Thaddée Ntihinyurwa, son prédécesseur, et c’est bien lui qui a dirigé les cérémonies d’installation. La cathédrale de Kigali ne pouvant pas accueillir la foule innombrable de chrétiens catholiques venus des neuf diocèses du Rwanda, la messe fut célébrée dans le stade Amahoro. Débutée à 11 heures, elle fut caractérisée par la grande joie des chrétiens. Le stade Amahoro, qui a une capacité d’accueil de 30.000 places, était plein. On notait un grand nombre de prêtres, religieux et religieuses. D’autres chrétiens, n’ayant pas pu entrer, ont suivi les cérémonies de derrière les murs du stade. La messe a été bien animée par la magnifique “Chorale de Kigali”. Les cérémonies ont été rehaussées par la présence du Président de la République, Monsieur Paul Kagame. A cause de sa présence et de celle d’autres autorités politiques, tout était placé sous la haute surveillance des militaires de la Garde présidentielle et de la Police nationale. Pour actualiser la Parole de Dieu et aider les chrétiens à bien l’assimiler, durant son homélie, Monseigneur Antoine Kambanda a utilisé la langue nationale et la langue de la liturgie de ce grand jour, le kinyarwanda. A l’issue de son installation, le nouvel Archevêque est entré dans une voiture décapotable pour faire le tour du stade et bénir le peuple de Dieu. A son passage les chrétiens l’applaudissaient chaleureusement. Vers la fin de la messe quelques discours ont été prononcés. Prenant la parole, le nouvel Archevêque a donné les grandes lignes de son projet pastoral et a cité, en particulier, le projet de la construction de la nouvelle Cathédrale comme une des ses priorités. de la République, a félicité l’Eglise catholique comme étant une bonne partenaire dans le cadre du développement social et économique ; il a parlé des grandes lignes de sa récente visite au Vatican et il a promis d’aider l’Archidiocèse de Kigali à construire la nouvelle Cathédrale dans « un autre lieu » mais, a-t-il dit, “tout sera le fruit de dialogue et négociation”. News PROFESSION PERPETUELLE DE DONATHA MUKESHIMANA, VDB. Dimanche 27 janvier 2019 a eu lieu, à la maison provinciale, la cérémonie des vœux perpétuels de Mademoiselle Donatha Mukeshimana, Volontaire de Don Bosco. La célébration eucharistique a commencé à 10 heures, présidée par le Provincial de l’AGL, P. PierreCélestin Ngoboka, en présence d’une trentaine de personnes, famille, amis et connaissances de Donatha, du Père Fabien Rutangira, sdb, Assistant ecclésiastique des VDB au Rwanda, des VDB, quelques Salésiens et FMA, certains venus de Goma. Parmi elles on notait la présence de deux membres du Conseil Général des VDB de Rome, Mademoiselle Pina Belocchi, Conseillère pour l’Afrique et Madagascar et Mademoiselle Dagmar Kicova, conseillère. C’est Melle Pina qui a reçu les vœux de Donatha au nom de la Responsable Générale. Il est à signaler qu’au même moment, un autre événement ecclésial important avait eu lieu, à savoir l’installation de Mgr Antoine Kambanda comme nouvel archevêque de Kigali, au stade Amahoro de la capitale. Dans son homélie, en français et kinyarwanda, le Provincial a développé le thème de la « consécration religieuse séculière. » Après la messe, les hôtes étaient invités au réfectoire de la maison provinciale pour des agapes fraternelles; plusieurs personnes ont pris la parole, les deux visiteuses de Rome, le P. Provincial, le P.Raymond, directeur de la Maison Provinciale, sans oublier, évidemment, Mademoiselle Donatha elle-même. Les VDB sont un Institut séculier, fondé par le 3ème successeur de Don Bosco, le bienheureux Philippe Rinaldi. Les membres de l’Institut, des femmes, sont des consacrées qui vivent leur vie consacrée en « plein monde », où elles essaient, avec la grâce de Dieu, de se sanctifier, en se mettant au service de leurs frères et sœurs, surtout jeunes et pauvres, sur les pas de Don Bosco et en vivant de son esprit. Uganda - Inauguration of Salesian Vocational Training Center in Palabek refugee camp On January 31, on the feast day of Don Bosco, the Salesian Province of Africa Great Lakes (AGL) inaugurated a Center for Vocational Training (CFP) in the refugee camp of Palabek, in the north of Uganda, where a Salesian community lives permanently among refugees, assisting them daily. The camp is home to refugees fleeing civil war and violence in South Sudan. There are currently over 34,000, mostly young people. It was a day of great joy for the young refugees, because this CFP will facilitate their autonomy and their social integration. The project of the CFP was conceived as a fundamental element so the Salesian intervention in Palabek be really effective. Starting from the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, various people and organizations of the Salesian Congregation have therefore mobilized to carry out this project. Thousands of refugees, representatives of nongovernmental organizations and a government delegation participated in the opening ceremonies, and several speeches of thanksgiving and encouragement were made by various guests, recipients of the CFP and collaborators. The young refugees demonstrated their talent by singing some specially composed songs in honor of Don Bosco, with which they praised and thanked the Saint of Youth and his spiritual sons. The students of the CFP will benefit from a free formation course of 3-6 months and/or a formation of one year. Everything will depend on the choice of courses and the skills of the individual student. Furthermore, an internal CFP job placement office has already been set up, which will put students in contact with companies, accompany them on site visits and interviews, and help them find traineeship options. Through vocational training these young people will be able to give themselves and their families social stability and improve their living conditions. “We thank the Lord for the realization of this project, through which we will be able to educate good technicians and honest citizens,” the Salesians of the Vice Province AGL say in conclusion.
