Estamos a puertas de un nuevo año lleno de retos y oportunidades. Desde la Cámara Ecuatoriano Británica, conscientes de la importancia de las alianzas para lograr nuestro objetivo de promover todo tipo de relaciones entre Ecuador y el Reino Unido: comerciales, culturales, educativas, y, de toda índole; empezaremos el 2017 con un acuerdo que permitirá trabajar de forma conjunta a las Cámaras Británicas de Quito y Guayaquil, coordinando actividades, servicios y beneficios para nuestros socios a nivel nacional.
We are about to enter into a New Year filled with challenges and opportunities. From the Ecuadorian British Chamber, we are conscious to the importance of alliances in order to achieve our objective of promoting all types of relations between Ecuador and the United Kingdom: commercial, cultural, educative and all other kinds. We will start 2017 with an agreement which will allow the two Chambers in Quito and Guayaquil to work conjointly in order to coordinate activities, services and benefits for our members at a national level.

We are sure that this union will be favourable to the interests of our members and we will be committed to supporting them during 2017, in order to achieve their goals and objectives; strengthen business and bilateral investment between the UK and Ecuador. This will start with the Commercial Agreement set up by the European Union, which will be put into practice next year and will continue with the different programmes and activities developed by the Chambers in Quito and Guayaquil.

HABITAT III
The Ecuadorian British Chamber at HABITAT III La Cámara Ecuatoriano Británica con el respaldo de la Embajada Británica participó en Hábitat III, la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre vivienda y desarrollo urbano sostenible, que tuvo lugar en Quito del 17 al 20 de Octubre. Durante la Conferencia, se respaldó la presencia de dos instituciones británicas: Gleeds y Future Cities, quienes presentaron sus propuestas innovadoras tanto en los side events, exposición oficial y reuniones mantenidas con el directorio de la Cámara Británica.
The Ecuadorian British Chamber with the support of the British Embassy participated in Habitat III, the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Development, which took place in Quito from the 17th to the 20th of October. During the conference we supported the presence of two British Institutions: Gleeds and Future Cities who presented their innovative proposals in side events, the official exhibition and meetings held by the British Chamber and their board of directors.

For the last four years, Ambassador Patrick Mullee has led the work of the British Embassy Quito, accomplishing great results. Amongst those, increasing the number of Ecuadorean students in the UK to over 200% more, growing UK exports to Ecuador from £234 million in 20082011 to £755 million in 2012-2015, successful public security and renewable energies projects with authorities and organisations in Ecuador, among many other big accomplishments. Millennials El Reto de Nuestra Era ¿Cómo podemos liderar a los Millennials para un futuro mejor?
Hablar de juventud significa tocar el tema de los Millennials, hombres y mujeres que actualmente están entre los 18 y 35 años, y que son altamente digitales, críticos y muy exigentes. A riesgo de quedarnos cortos, porque son altamente competitivos e inteligentes, lo que verdaderamente preocupa es que son muy sensibles a los problemas externos y se deprimen con muchísima facilidad. El problema es que en el 2025 representarán el 75% de la fuerza laboral en el mundo y la distancia generacional con sus jefes no solo está afectando las decisiones sino que les estamos construyendo entornos sin considerar sus necesidades afectivas. Para poder tener Millennials firmes, maduros y conscientes del cambio, debemos comenzar a formarlos ahora, a darles valores que les ayuden a dirigir a la siguiente generación (la Z), mucho más complicada, pues tiene las peores características de la X, con muchas

de las cualidades de la Y, lo que los hace perversamente competitivos, capaces y lapidarios. El primer reto es cambiar la manera de educarlos, no se pueden usar los mismos métodos, pues aprenden más rápido y prefieren investigar en Internet a escuchar al profesor por horas; lo segundo es volver a los hogares tradicionales, con familias estables, que comparten, se dan cariño, se apoyan y más importante, a la figura paterna , necesaria tanto en hombres como en mujeres. Entonces, si queremos mejores ciudades y mejores empresas, necesitamos comenzar por formar a los que las ocuparán y dirigirán, en medio de un entorno de seguridad y cariño que les permita asumir con seguridad y coherencia los retos que les deparará el futuro. The Challenge of Our Time How can we lead Millennials for a better future?
When talking about young people we inevitably touch upon the theme of “Millennials�; men and women who are currently between the ages of 18-35 and who are highly digitalized, critical and very demanding. At the risk of falling short because they are highly competitive and intelligent, the truly worrying this is that they are very sensitive to external problems and become depressed extremely easily.
The first challenge is to change the way they are educated, not to use the same methods since they learn much more quickly; they prefer to do internet research rather than listen to a teacher for hours. The second is to return to traditional homes with stable families who share, give affection, support each other and most importantly to a father figure , which is necessary for both men and women.
The problem is that in 2025, they will represent 75% of the world’s labour force and the generational gap with their bosses is not only effecting decisions but we are building environments for them without considering their emotional needs.
As a result, if we want better cities and better companies we need to start to educate those who will be looking after and managing them, in an environment of security and care which will allow them to take on with certainty and coherency the challenges which the future will bring.
In order to have confident, mature and conscious Millennials, we should start educating them now, giving them qualities which will help them to lead the next generation (the Z); they have the worst characteristics of the X Generation, with many of the qualities of the Y Generation, which makes them viciously competitive and critical.

The UK in Ecuador and Ecuador in the UK Professor David Wilson, Associate Dean International from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton spoke to LINKS Magazine about his experience at “Education is Great Fair” organised by the British Embassy in order to promote UK Higher Education 1. ¿Cómo describiría los estudiantes de América Latina que estudian en Southampton?
1. How would you describe the students from Latin America who study at Southampton?
“Según mi experiencia, las universidades británicas dan la bienvenida a los estudiantes de América Latina por varias razones importantes. Nos parece que académicamente los estudiantes demuestran conocimientos sólidos y normalmente tienen un nivel de inglés alto, que es necesario para estudiar en el extranjero. Además su entusiasmo y su buena ética laboral juegan un rol importante en su enfoque al aprendizaje. Esta actitud positiva contribuye a las actividades extracurriculares y a la comunidad adentro de la universidad.”
“In my experience, UK universities particularly welcome Latin American students for several key reasons. We find that the students are academically strong and they usually have a high level of English, both of which are vital when studying abroad. Furthermore their enthusiasm and excellent work ethic play an important role in their approach to learning. This positive attitude contributes to extracurricular life and the community within the university.”
2. ¿Cómo se adaptan los estudiantes al sistema de educación en el Reino Unido? “Como grupo, los estudiantes de América Latina se adaptan relativamente fácil a la vida en al Reino Unido, dado que hay varios aspectos en común con la vida en las ciudades latinoamericanas. III AUDI British Polo Cup Aunque los inicios del polo datan de mucho antes de la historia documentada, se acepta universalmente que se originó en la Persia antigua. Extendiéndose a Constantinopla, Tíbet, China y Japón, el deporte llegó a la provincia de Manipur, en el noreste de India, donde se convirtió en el juego moderno que conocemos hoy. Hasta 1869, el polo llegó a Inglaterra y después de haber leído un artículo que describía al polo como “hockey en caballo” publicado en la revista The Field, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp y sus compañeros organizaron su primer juego. Hurlingham Club se convirtió en un nombre clave en la sociedad de polo,pues se estableció en 1875 como la sede del juego y adquirió popularidad entre espectadores y jugadores. Además, los miembros distinguidos de la sociedad británica y estadounidense de la época, como tales Winston Churchill, Generals Patton y el olímpico Tommy Hitchcock entre otros, ayudaron a fomentar el carácter legendario del deporte. 1 El desarrollo del polo en Ecuador empezó, tras la fundación del Quito Polo Club en 1905. polo era un deporte practicado por familias terratenientes, cuyos hijos trajeron el deporte del extranjero. El año 1961 fue el mejor momento en la historia del polo ecuatoriano, ya que el Príncipe Felipe de Inglaterra realizó una visita real en el país. Después de hablar con José María Uribe— un miembro activo del Quito Polo Club en esa época— indica que se sugirió practicarlo en el Parque la Carolina. En una entrevista concedida a la revista LINKS, José María Uribe contó: “El evento era cerrado, de ningún manera oficial…y ¡el Príncipe demostró ser un buen jugador!” La Cámara Ecuatoriano Británica busca fomentar este deporte en Ecuador, de allí que ha organizado ya por tercera ocasión el “British Polo Cup”. Este año, la III edición reunió socios, familiares y amigos de la Cámara, British Group y Quito Polo Club Checa en el marco de un torneo internacional con jugadores del Reino Unido y Argentina. Después de una semana de partidos, los juegos terminaron el 19 de noviembre en Checa, donde el evento final fue organizado con el importante apoyo de los auspiciantes oficiales del evento: AUDI, FYBECA, TOTTO, HELM BANK USA, PISO EXPRESS-JADE, JW MARRIOTT, PACIFICARD, REAL ESTATE INVESTMENTS, BUPA, CABIFY, VINESA, BUGGATTI, GENTLEMAN, EXPOFAST, ES BUREAU Y KREAB.

Whilst the invention of polo dates back to much before recorded history, it is universally accepted that it originated in ancient Persia. Spreading to Constantinople, Tibet, China and Japan the sport reached the northeastern province of Manipur, in India, where it developed into the modern game we know today. By 1869, polo had travelled to England and after having read an account of polo being “hockey on horseback” in The Field magazine, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp and his fellow military officers organised their first game. Hurlingham Club became a key name in the society of polo as it established itself in 1875 as the headquarters for the game and it became popularized and highly fashionable for players and spectators alike. Furthermore, distinguished members of British and American society during this time, Winston Churchill, Generals Patton and Olympians such as Tommy Hitchcock amongst others took up polo which continued to foster the sport’s legendary character. 1 The development of polo in Ecuador began relatively late, with the founding of Quito Polo Club in 1905. III AUDI British Polo Cup at this time, polo was played principally by estate-owning families whose children brought the sport from abroad. Of Ecuador’s history of polo, there was a particular highlight in 1961, when Prince Phillip arrived for an official visit. After speaking about his interest in polo with José María Uribe, an active member of Quito Polo Club at the time, a practice in Parque La Carolina was suggested. In an interview in LINKS magazine, José María said: “It was a closed affair, by no means an official event….and the Prince proved himself a very good player!” The Ecuadorian British Chamber seeks to promote this sport in Ecuador, and consequently organised for the third year running the “British Polo Cup”. This year, the third edition brought together members, families and friends of the Chamber, the British Group and of Quito Polo Club Checa within the framework of an international tournament, with players from the UK and Argentina. After a week of play, the games came to a close on the 19th of November in Checa, where the final was hosted with the support of the sponsors of the event: AUDI, FYBECA, TOTTO, HELM BANK USA, PISO EXPRESSJADE, JW MARRIOTT, PACIFICARD, REAL ESTATE INVESTMENTS, BUPA, CABIFY, VINESA, BUGGATTI, GENTLEMAN, EXPOFAST, ES BUREAU Y KREAB.

Bienvenidos al centro Iinternacional de Arbitraje y Mediación Estimados lectores, En mi calidad de Director del CIAM, me es muy grato poner a su consideración los servicios de Arbitraje y Mediación como mecanismos alternativos y eficientes de solución de controversias. El Arbitraje, como requisito previo, requiere la celebración de un convenio o pacto arbitral, mediante el cual las partes renuncian a la jurisdicción ordinaria y deciden someter su controversia a un Tribunal Arbitral. De acuerdo a lo dispuesto por la Ley de Arbitraje y Mediación, un proceso arbitral no puede exceder los ciento cincuenta días hábiles, lo cual representa una ventaja muy importante a las partes en litigio, por la eficiencia del tiempo. Los Árbitros son profesionales, abogados o no, que poseen amplios conocimientos en el ámbito profesional y se dedican de manera exclusiva, en la mayoría de los casos, a un solo proceso arbitral, lo cual garantiza su desempeño eficiente respetando los más altos parámetros éticos. La Mediación, por su parte, -como un proceso voluntario en el que las partes, con la asistencia de un Mediador independiente, exploran la posibilidad de llegar a un acuerdo que concluya el conflicto-, es otro de los servicios garantizados por el CIAM, dada la experticia y capacitación de nuestros mediadores, quienes son profesionales de importante trayectoria en la materia. El CIAM se enorgullece de contar con la capacidad jurídica y operativa para administrar mediaciones y procesos arbitrales nacionales e internacionales y de continuar fomentando la resolución pacífica y eficiente de conflictos. The Arbitrary, as a prerequisite, requires the observance of an arbitral agreement or pact, through which the parties waive ordinary jurisdiction and decide to submit their dispute to an Arbitral Tribunal. In accordance with the provisions of the Arbitration and Mediation Act, an arbitral process cannot exceed the one hundred and fifty working days which represent an important advantage to the parties in litigation for time efficiency. The Arbitrators are professionals, sometimes lawyers, who have ample knowledge in the professional field and exclusively allocate, in the majority of cases, a single arbitral process which guarantees its efficient performance with respect to the highest ethical parameters. Acuerdo Comercial Ecuador – Unión Europea El 2016 termina con una excelente noticia para las relaciones comerciales entre Ecuador y la Unión Europea. El Parlamento Europeo, el pasado 14 de diciembre, dio el visto bueno a la incorporación de Ecuador al acuerdo comercial de la UE con Colombia y Perú. Ecuador de su parte ratificará en el pleno de la Asamblea Nacional el acuerdo, con lo cual entrará en vigencia desde el 1 de enero del 2017, manteniendo de esta manera su acceso preferencial al mercado comunitario. El tratado fue respaldado por 544 eurodiputados. El objetivo es suprimir, en un plazo de 17 años, los gravámenes para el 96% de las líneas arancelarias, aunque a la entrada en vigor del acuerdo la UE lo hará para el 95% de los capítulos y Ecuador para el 60%. 1 Los exportadores ecuatorianos dispondrán de un acceso a los 28 países miembros, con 508 millones de habitantes y PIB percápita de US $31.842 (2015), que beneficiará a sus principales productos como banano, pescado, flores cortadas, café, cacao, frutas y frutos secos. 2 Por otro lado el mercado ecuatoriano se beneficiará de productos europeos a un menor

Commercial Agreement Ecuador – European Union This year has ended with excellent news for the commercial relations between Ecuador and the European Union. On the 14th of December, the European Parliament approved the incorporation of Ecuador into the commercial agreement of the EU with Columbia and Peru. During the plenary session of the National Assembly, Ecuador confirmed their participation in the agreement, which will take effect as of the 1st of January 2017, which will maintain their preferential access to the community market. The aim is to eliminate tariffs for 96% of tariff lines within 17 years, although at the almost immediate introduction of the agreement the EU will do so for 95% of the chapters and Ecuador for 60%. 1 Ecuadorian exporters have access to the 28 member countries with 508 million residents and US$31.842 (2015) per capita, who will benefit from their principle products such as: bananas, fish, cut flowers, coffee, cacao, fresh and dried fruit. 2
This third generation agreement contains 14 chapters and XIV appendices which, amongst themes, include: • Access to goods – agricultural products, industrial and fishing products, commercial defense measures, customs and business facilitators • Access to the services market and electronics trade • Public purchases, intellectual property, commerce and sustainable development • Human Rights Clause and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass-destruction In spite of BREXIT, the market, in the case of the UK, is still a part of the EU in such a way that the Ecuadorian exports to the British market will benefit from this agreement.
