“BIG REVEAL”:

What is STRESS?

Stress is a normal reaction the body has when changes occur, resulting in physical, emotional and intellectual responses. Stress management training can help you deal with changes in a healthier way. What is stress? Stress is a normal human reaction that happens to everyone. In fact, the human body is designed to experience stress and react to it. When you experience changes or challenges (stressors), your body produces physical and mental responses. That’s stress. Stress responses help your body adjust to new situations. Stress can be positive, keeping us alert, motivated and ready to avoid danger. For example, if you have an important test coming up, a stress response might help your body work harder and stay awake longer. But stress becomes a problem when stressors continue without relief or periods of relaxation. What happens to the body during stress? The body’s autonomic nervous system controls your heart rate, breathing, vision changes and more. Its built-in stress response, the “fight-orflight response,” helps the body face stressful situations. When a person has long-term (chronic) stress, continued activation of the stress response causes wear and tear on the body. Physical, emotional and behavioural symptoms develop. Physical symptoms of stress include: Aches and pains. Chest pain or a feeling like your heart is racing. Exhaustion or trouble sleeping. Headaches, dizziness or shaking. High blood pressure. Muscle tension or jaw clenching. Stomach or digestive problems. Trouble having sex. Weak immune system. Stress can lead to emotional and mental symptoms like: Anxiety or irritability. Depression. Panic attacks. Sadness. Often, people with chronic stress try to manage it with unhealthy behaviours, including: Drinking alcohol too much or too often. Gambling. Overeating or developing an eating disorder. Participating compulsively in sex, shopping or internet browsing. Smoking. Using drugs. How is stress diagnosed? Stress is subjective not measurable with tests. Only the person experiencing it can determine whether it's present and how severe it feels. A healthcare provider may use questionnaires to understand your stress and how it affects your life. If you have

chronic stress, your healthcare provider can evaluate symptoms that result from stress. For example, high blood pressure can be diagnosed and treated. What are some strategies for stress relief? You can’t avoid stress, but you can stop it from becoming overwhelming by practicing some daily strategies: Exercise when you feel symptoms of stress coming on. Even a short walk can boost your mood. At the end of each day, take a moment to think about what you’ve accomplished not what you didn’t get done. Set goals for your day, week and month. Narrowing your view will help you feel more in control of the moment and long-term tasks. Consider talking to a therapist or your healthcare provider about your worries. What are some ways to prevent stress? Many daily strategies can help you keep stress at bay: Try relaxation activities, such as meditation, yoga, tai chi, breathing exercises and muscle relaxation. Programs are available online, in smartphone apps, and at many gyms and community centres. Take good care of your body each day. Eating right, exercising and getting enough sleep help your body handle stress much better. Stay positive and practice gratitude, acknowledging the good parts of your day or life. Accept that you can’t control everything. Find ways to let go of worry about situations you cannot change. Learn to say “no” to additional responsibilities when you are too busy or stressed. Stay connected with people who keep you calm, make you happy, provide emotional support and help you with practical things. A friend, family member or neighbour can become a good listener or share responsibilities so that stress doesn’t become overwhelming. How long does stress last? Stress can be a short-term issue or a long-term problem, depending on what changes in your life. Regularly using stress management techniques can help you avoid most physical, emotional and behavioural symptoms of stress. When should I talk to a doctor about stress? You should seek medical attention if you feel overwhelmed, if you are using drugs or alcohol to cope, or if you have thoughts about hurting yourself. Your primary care provider can help by offering advice, prescribing medicine or referring you to a therapist.

INGREDIENTS

• 100 g sugar

• 1 1/2 t ground cinnamon

• 90 g cake flour

• Salt, a pinch

• 3 T butter

• 1 1/2 litres milk

• 1 cinnamon stick

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

Mix the sugar and ground cinnamon.

Rub together the flour, salt and butter with your fingers until it is nice and crumbly – the Afrikaans word for this is frummel (verb) or frummels (noun).

Add 3 T cinnamon sugar and continue mixing with your fingers. Pour the milk into a large saucepan and add the

Melkos Traditional

Melkkos is a traditional South African dish made from sugar, flour, butter and milk, flavoured with cinnamon. This is a basic, smooth version made with a whisk, but you can also mix with a wooden spoon if you prefer lumps. Some recipes even add pasta or sago, while others call for Maizena or condensed milk.

cinnamon stick. Bring to the boil. Once the milk is boiling and frothy, reduce the heat and allow to simmer while slowly sprinkling the frummels into the milk, whisking. Reduce the heat and simmer gently, while whisking continually, for about 10 minutes. Turn off the heat, allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving with a generous sprinkling of cinnamon sugar.

Cook Tips: Do not skimp on the cinnamon sugar – if you are cautious with it, you have no business making and serving melkkos. If you like your melkkos more milky, simply use more milk and less flour. Alternatively, if you want to have small lumps of cinnamon dough drifting like tiny islands in a bowl of milk, gently stir with a wooden spoon instead of whisking. Just do what feels right.

Melkkos is not a science, it’s an emotion.

Die Kerk is maar net ‘n

“So sê die Here: Die hemel is my troon en die aarde die rusplek vir my voete. Na my mening is laasgenoemde veel belangriker! (1 Kor. 3:17)

Preparing your garden for WINTER

STODELS GARDEN CENTRE IN CAPE TOWN HAS THE FOLLOWING TIPS FOR WINTER GARDENING:

Trimming - In June fruit trees like apricots, peaches and plums are ripe for pruning. Remove branches and stems on sweet peas to promote strong upward growth. Other trees and shrubs that need to be pruned include autumn-flowering shrubs such as barleria, pride of India, ribbon bush, and wild dagga. Cut back evergreen herbs like rosemary and thyme. Roses need to be pruned after transplanting. Plant and sow - Plant coolseason bedding plants such as alyssum, calendula, dianthus, lobelia, nemesia, pansies, sweet peas, and violas. Azaleas, camellias, and liliums can be planted in dappled shade. Add Brussels sprouts, kale, leeks, onions, radishes, turnips, and members of the cabbage family - broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and spinach - to your vegetable garden. Feed - Remember to do some proper root-feeding before you hibernate. Winter- and spring-flowering seedlings need organic fertiliser every two

weeks, as well as weekly watering during drier spells. Feed lemon trees with a 2:3:2 general fertiliser. Feed bulbs with bulb food once every two weeks and water well. Check the edges of sweet peas. If they’re brown and papery, feed with a 3:1:5 fertiliser. General- Before it becomes too cold and wet to venture outdoors tick off tasks on the to-do list. Move worm farms to a warmer spot out of the rain. Adjust sprinkler systems to avoid overwatering. Get pruning gear ready to trim fruit trees and roses. Sharpen loppers and secateurs and find your gardening gloves. Stock up on a good sealant for protecting freshly cut branches. Treat winter lawns with care. Keep on mowing regularly because if grass grows too tall it can attract lawn fungi. Refrain from lawn dressing at this time of the year to avoid smothering the grass. Boost root mass with a 2.3.2 organic fertiliser.

SA-BUILT HALF-TONNE BAKKIE: VW SAYS ‘THERE IS HOPE’

The head of Volkswagen Group South Africa has ruled out a local launch of the current-generation Saveiro (a unibody pick-up offered in Latin America), but confirmed “there is hope” for a Kariega-built half-tonne bakkie that would slot in below the new Amarok. Martina Biene, chairperson and managing director of Volkswagen Group South Africa, made the comments during an exclusive podcast interview with Cars.co.za video journalist, Ciro De Siena. When asked whether VWSA had any plans to offer the Saveiro locally – a question the German firm’s management has fielded time and again – Biene suggested numerous feasibility studies had been conducted over the years, but each one indicated converting the Latin America-only bakkie to right-hand-drive would be prohibitively expensive. “We’ve done multiple calculations [in an attempt] to get the current Saveiro converted to right-hand drive. Unfortunately, the downside of our Brazilian partnership is that all these [Latin American] countries are left-handdrive countries,” she explained. So, what about building a similar unibody bakkie right here in South Africa? Well, Biene revealed such an opportunity may well present itself down the line, making reference to the mystery 3rd product the German firm’s local division plans to build

alongside the Polo hatchback and the Polo Vivo – at the Kariega plant in the Eastern Cape. In November 2022, VWSA announced an intention to add a new model to its local production line, confirming the vehicle will ride on the same MQB-A0 platform as the Polo and numerous other VW Group products. Internally dubbed the “A0 Entry SUV”, the newcomer is set to be positioned below the T-Cross as part of the Polo family. “The nice thing with this ‘A0 Entry SUV’ is that it provides an opportunity for an even bigger than half-tonne bakkie – so, a 750 kg [payload] bakkie. This is something we are looking into,” Biene revealed. “So, there is hope, but there is not hope for the current Saveiro. But probably for something nice to come in the future.” How far in the future? Well, considering the aforementioned A0 Entry SUV is likely to go into production in 2026 or 2027 (once signed off by Wolfsburg, of course), a half-tonne bakkie spin-off would surely arrive only sometime thereafter. Back

in 2018, Volkswagen unveiled the MQBbased Tarok concept at the São Paulo International Motor Show, suggesting the “lifestyle-oriented pick-up” – which measured 4 914 mm long – would go on sale in Brazil “soon”. Though the unibody double-cab bakkie didn’t ever make it to production and thus failed to materialise in Brazil, it may well form some sort of basis for the model Biene is proposing. Currently, the only half-tonne bakkie on the local market is the long-in-thetooth Nissan NP200, a Rosslyn-built single cab – with a payload of 800 kg

that has managed to outlast every one of its rivals (remember the Chevrolet Utility, Ford Bantam and Fiat Strada?). Nissan has thus had the local half-tonne segment all to itself over the past few years, though the line-up has since been rationalised to just 2 derivatives. Furthermore, earlier in 2023, Nissan SA confirmed to Cars.co.za it is in the

process of conducting a “product feasibility study” on a possible replacement. Nissan’s alliance partner Renault is also edging ever closer to launching the long-promised Dusterbased Oroch, though it’s unclear whether the SA-spec model will adopt a single- or double-cab body style. It’s worth noting VW has offered a small bakkie before in the form of the Mk1 Golf-based Caddy, which traced its origins all the way back to 1978. Volkswagen’s facility in Uitenhage (which has, of course, since been renamed Kariega) produced this model from 1981 until 2007. Also, the German firm currently has an SA-built bakkie in its range, since the 2nd-generation Amarok is manufactured by Ford alongside the Ranger at the Blue Oval brand’s Silverton factory.
