avier had received some good news: he’d just got the promotion he’d been waiting for. It was time to pack his bags and embark on his new adventure. However, he couldn’t leave Barcelona without first saying goodbye to his friends and his favourite place: La Taperia at El Nacional. It’s a hidden gem in the heart of Passeig de Gràcia, serving exquisite tapas with verve and gusto. For Xavier, it was ideal for a send-off so he wouldn’t forget the flavours of our creations made from the freshest produce: fideuà with alioli, Acorn-fed Iberian shoulder ham, razor clams, San Sebastian style, shrimps from Huelva… “And, of course, I couldn’t say goodbye to Barcelona without ordering my favourite tapas: the Barceloneta Bomb”, he remarks wistfully to his friends.
Start by bringing the chickpeas to the boil in spring water. The aim is to preserve all their flavour and tenderness. When they have increased to three times their original size, remove them from the heat. Plate up and dress with a vinaigrette and Modena vinegar. Chop a selection of favourite vegetables into small cubes and mix them together. Finish by laying the slices of confit bonito on top. Consumers will have to pay a 20 pence deposit (26 cents) when they buy a drink, which will be returned when they hand in the bottle or can for recycling. Goodbye to petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 —Adiós a los vehículos de combustión en 2030 ☛ Vehicles powered by internal combustion engines will cease to be used in Amsterdam from 2030. That’s the measure announced by the city’s local authorities as part of their plan to cut air pollution. Nero’s Sphinx Room is discovered —Descubren la Sala de la Esfinge del emperador Nerón ☛ A team of archaeologists working on the restoration of the Domus Aurea, the large palace complex belonging to the Emperor Nero, have made a chance discovery of a chamber that had been hidden for 2,000 years. The Sphinx Room, as they have named it, is richly decorated with mythological figures; it can only be viewed from the top of the vault as the rest of the room is still buried. Growth hormone’s role in learning is revealed —Descubierto el papel de la hormona del crecimiento en el aprendizaje ☛ Researchers at the Neurosciences Division at the Pablo de Olavide University and the Biomedicine Institute, both in Seville, have shown that an increase in hyper-secretion of growth hormone, together with other factors, improves neurocognitive functioning and long term memory during adult neurogenesis. The results of this study could lead to the therapeutic use of growth hormone to counter the effects of ageing and a range of health conditions. ☞ Investigadores de la división de Neurociencias de la Universidad Pablo de Olavide y del Instituto de Biomedicina, ambas de Sevilla, han demostrado que el aumento de la hipersecreción de la hormona de crecimiento junto con otros factores mejora las funciones neurocognitivas y la memoria a largo plazo durante la neurogénesis en el adulto. A Bermuda Triangle in the Mediterranean? ¿UN TRIÁNGULO DE LAS BERMUDAS EN EL MEDITERRÁNEO? TEXT GEMA LOZANO
The flight was proceeding normally until that point. Neither the pilot, nor the co-pilot, nor any of the crew members could understand what was happening right before their eyes. A series of red, green and white lights were playing around in front of the plane. Fear of colliding with another aircraft led the flight commander to request information and help from the control tower. Their radar, however, detected nothing out of the ordinary. So the pilot resorted to his skill at the controls to avoid a head-on crash with whatever it was. But the manoeuvre didn’t work. The strange lights mirrored the plane as it gained altitude. It seemed like they wanted to dance. This bizarre situation became increasingly dangerous or, at the very least, precarious. The pilot then took what was at that point an unprecedented decision in Spanish commercial aviation: he requested an emergency landing due to a UFO sighting. After receiving permission, the plane came in to land, by which time the lights had already disappeared. The extraordinary event was baptised The Manises Incident, named after the airport in Valencia where the plane was forced to touch down. The flight had set out from Austria and, after making a stop in Palma, was scheduled to land in Tenerife. Those freakish lights prevented that from happening just as the plane was flying over what many people refer to as The Triangle of Silence, an area traced from the Peñon de Ifach (Calpe) to the south-eastern coast of Mallorca and the Ibizan islet of Es Vedrà. Many legends claim that birds become disoriented when they fly over this area of the sea. Some even speak of ships lost forever after sailing these waters. All of them cling to the idea that the energy in these parts creates a kind of Mediterranean-style Bermuda Triangle. Of its three vertices, Es Vedrà is perhaps considered to have the most powerful telluric energy, acquired — apparently — when the island separated from Ibiza, which it was attached to various millions of years ago. Since then, no small number of fishermen and sailors have claimed (and still claim) to have heard strange sounds or have seen lights emerging from the waters that lap the islet’s shores. And while the accounts continue to pile up, the rock stands impassive to the legends surrounding it, gazing across to the southern coast of Ibiza.
El vuelo transcurría con normalidad hasta aquel momento. Ni el piloto, ni el copiloto ni ningún otro miembro de la tripulación entendían lo que estaba aconteciendo ante sus ojos. Una serie de luces rojas, verdes y blancas jugueteaban frente al avión. El temor a chocar contra otra nave llevó al comandante a pedir información y ayuda a la torre de control. Pero sus radares no detectaban nada extraño. El piloto recurrió entonces a su destreza a los mandos para evitar un choque frontal con lo que quisiera que fuese aquello. Pero la maniobra no funcionó. Las extrañas luces imitaron al avión cuando este se elevó. Parecían querer bailar con él. La extraña situación se tornaba cada vez más peligrosa o, cuanto menos, incierta. El piloto tomó entonces una decisión hasta ese momento inédita en la aviación comercial en España: solicitar un aterrizaje de emergencia por el avistamiento de un ovni. Tras conseguir el permiso, el avión tomó tierra. Las luces ya habían desaparecido. El extraño suceso fue bautizado como Caso Manises al tomar prestado el nombre del aeropuerto valenciano en el que aterrizó. El vuelo procedía de Austria y tras hacer una escala en Palma se disponía a arribar en Tenerife. Algo que aquellas extrañas luces impidió justo cuando el avión sobrevolaba el que muchos conocen como el Triángulo del Silencio. Una zona delimitada por el Peñón de Ifach (Calpe), la costa suroeste de Mallorca y el islote ibicenco de Es Vedrà. Son muchas las leyendas que aseguran que la aves se desorientan al volar sobre aquella franja de mar. Incluso las que hablan de embarcaciones que se perdieron para siempre tras surcar sus aguas. A todas ellas se aferran los que consideran que la energía que desprende la zona la convierten en una especie de Triángulo de las Bermudas en el Mediterráneo. De sus tres vértices, quizás es a Es Vedrà al que se le atribuye mayor poder telúrico. Dicen que lo adquirió cuando se desprendió de Ibiza, con la que conformaba una única isla hace ya unos cuantos millones de años. No son pocos los pescadores y marineros que a lo largo de este tiempo aseguraron (y aseguran) haber escuchado sonidos extraños y ver luces procedentes del fondo de las aguas que lo bañan. Y mientras los testimonios se suceden, el peñón permanece impertérrito a su leyenda, mirando cara a cara a la costa sur de Ibiza.

Tribute to the first female university student. A young woman leans against the wall as if she were waiting for someone, holding her books in her hand. It could be anyone, but Julia, as this bronze statue is called, has a story. Created by the sculptor Antonio Santín, this work pays tribute to the first woman who set out to study at university in Madrid. To achieve her goal, she had to disguise herself as a man. Some people believe that the figure represents the lawyer, writer and activist, Concepción Arenal. Located in the Malasaña neighbourhood, the statue leans against a wall of what, in the 19th century, was Madrid Central University, now the headquarters of the School of Vocal Arts.
Homenaje a la primera mujer en la universidad. Una joven se apoya en la pared como si estuviera esperando a alguien, con los libros sujetos en una mano. Podría ser cualquiera, pero Julia, que así se llama la estatua de bronce, tiene una historia detrás. Voyeurismo ilustrado Hemos viajado a Suiza en una misión de espías para responder a una pregunta: ¿cómo mira quien mira un museo? De todas las formas posibles de visitar un museo, escogimos el voyeurismo. Dos fotógrafos, Orietta Gelardin y Fosi Vegue viajaron por los once museos de arte más importantes de Suiza con un objetivo: espiar el espectáculo humano que sucede delante de los cuadros. Se dieron cuenta de que la arquitectura, la luz, la forma de componer el espacio expositivo y la actitud de los visitantes al observar podía cambiar el significado de las obras. Imaginen: un Picasso, un Paul Klee, una fotografía, una pieza de diseño gráfico, un fragmento de historia egipcia; todo mutando una y otra vez con cada vez que una persona se acerca y vive un rato delante de ellos. Hay visitantes que foguean con sus cámaras, que no ven nada si no es a través de la pantalla. Hay jóvenes que se sientan en el suelo y toman notas y tratan de arrancar el secreto de cada pieza. Hay niños que, de pronto, sin tener conceptos ni prejuicios en la cabeza, ven las figuras y los colores y sueñan. Vegue y Gelardin ejercieron de degustadores de arte y de creadores; eran agentes dobles. he dish of sfougato can be found across much of mainland Greece and the Aegean Islands, including Mykonos in the Cyclades. This is a kind of vegetarian omelette, often with the addition of courgette, although spinach is a common alternative.

A vegetable-based diet is the tradition on the Greek islands, where meat was once hard to come by and fish a supplement rather than a basis. A look at some of the classic Greek recipes will confirm this: vine leaves stuffed with rice (dolmades), bean soup (fasolada), peppers stuffed with rice (gemistá) and the age-old spinach and cheese pie known as spanakopita. One famous meat dish, keftedes, also has courgette (kolokithokeftedes) and tomato (psepftokeftedes) based variations.

Finding out the origins of these dishes is complicated by the historical comings and goings around the Mediterranean of Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs, and more recently Spaniards, Venetians, Genoese, British and French. In fact one possible origin of sfougato is Sephardic cookery, brought by Jews expelled from Spain in the late 15th century and spread around the Mediterranean. This, at least, is the thesis of the researcher Vasiliki Kravva, an expert in Sephardic food, in her article Food as a Vehicle for Remembering.

According to the Encyclopaedia of Jewish Cookery, sfougato is linked to the quiche family of recipes, given that both are mixtures of vegetables and cheese that are bound by egg, which sets when cooked.

These days, with plant-based diets on the rise, the inns of Mykonos, where sfougato is commonly offered, are proud to offer a traditionally vegetarian and local dish. However, until innovation can create a version without either eggs or cheese, it will be forbidden fruit for vegans.

The most peculiar stairway in Spain LA ESCALERA MÁS PECULIAR DE ESPAÑA TEXT ENRIQUE ALPAÑÉS
S
taircases are architectural glue, links made out of steps connecting different realities and heights. Stairs lift us up from the earth’s crust, elevating the frontiers of the domestic, the urban and the human. But enough of the philosophising, stairs are also prosaic, unremarkable, commonplace. They are a means to an end, a practical solution to a human need and seldom do such practical solutions achieve the status of a work of art. However, as soon as you see the old Dominican convent of San Domingos de Bonaval in Santiago, you’ll realise it’s one of these rare examples. The triple spiral staircase designed by Domingo de Andrade at the end of the 17th century is among the finest in the world. This incredible stone vine has three independent coils providing access to each of the three floors of the building, which is now home to the Museo do Pobo Galego (Museum of the Galician People). Normally, when you go up stairs, you keep your eyes planted firmly on the ground to avoid tripping up. Here, however, the risk of an accident is a small price to pay for admiring what’s above your head. The handrails look as if they are coiled together like elegant wooden snakes. The light that gushes in from the skylight seems to flood everything with an unreal luminosity (that’s when the sun comes out, because remember it’s Galicia we’re talking about). At first sight, it’s hard to grasp the arrangement of the three staircases that fuse together, as if trying to strangle a zenithal eye of light. It’s only when you begin to climb their steps, one by one, that you start to understand Domingo de Andrade’s work. His creations transcended the discipline of architecture: his legacy was not just the creation of buildings, it was the style of a whole city. De Andrade was the main figure in the Galician transition to the Baroque. He first worked as a surveyor, then as general contractor on Santiago’s most famous icon: its cathedral.

Las escaleras despegaron al hombre de la corteza terrestre y lo elevaron; expandieron en altura las fronteras de lo doméstico, de lo urbano, de lo humano. Pero abandonemos las interpretaciones filosóficas; lo cierto es que las escaleras son prosaicas, cotidianas, casi vulgares. Son la solución práctica a una necesidad humana y raramente las soluciones prácticas alcanzan el estatus de obra de arte. Basta echar un vistazo al antiguo convento dominico de San Domingos de Bonaval, en Santiago, para constatar que este es uno de estos raros casos. Las escaleras helicoidales de triple hélice que diseñó Domingo de Andrade a finales del siglo XVII se encuentran entre las más bellas del mundo. Esta enredadera de piedra consta de tres rampas independientes que dan acceso a cada uno de los tres pisos que conforman el edificio, hoy convertido en el Museo do Pobo Galego (Museo del Pueblo Gallego). Normalmente, al subir unas escaleras, uno mira al suelo, no vaya a ser que trastabille con un peldaño; pero aquí vale la pena jugarse la integridad física y alzar la vista al cielo. Las barandillas parecen enroscarse sobre sí mismas, como si fueran elegantes serpientes de madera. La luz que cae a borbotones del techo parece bañar el conjunto en una luz irreal (cuando hace sol, recuerda que estás en Galicia). A primera vista cuesta entender la distribución de estas tres escaleras que se funden en altura, pareciendo querer ahogar un ojo de luz cenital. Es solo cuando recorremos, una a una, las tres escaleras, cuando empezamos a entender el trabajo de Domingo de Andrade. Es este un creador que superó los corsés de la arquitectura pues no solo construyó edificios, sino el estilo de toda una ciudad. De Andrade fue el principal promotor en Galicia del tránsito al barroco. Fue primero aparejador y después maestro mayor del edificio que mejor define Santiago: su catedral.

However, the stairs of San Domingos are his most original work. The set of Baroque staircases is an ingenious solution that makes the most of the only available space. The stairs, a single piece, are built into the wall and are only held in place by an outer rib in the shape of a logarithmic spiral. The effect is something wider and more stylised than it really is, stretching up to the sky in a virtuoso example of architecture.
Pero es, sin embargo, en las escaleras de San Domingos donde ejecuta su trabajo más original. Su conjunto de escaleras barrocas supuso una solución ingeniosa para aprovechar el único hueco disponible. Stairs can be used to go up and down the floors without using the lift. As simple and mundane as that. However, beholding the stairs of the Museo do Pobo Galego as you climb them, you can dream of more artistic interpretations and more philosophical ends. Stairs, we could say, are there to reach loftier places. Sometimes in more than one sense of the word.

raffiti’s not everyone’s thing. And the authorities aren’t into it at all. Thomas Dambo knows that much from experience: “I got sick of running away from the police and that no-one appreciated the effort I put in to making the city more beautiful.” Like many other graffiti artists, Dambo considers that the reason for this rejection is a lack of understanding. But this Danish chap wasn’t resigned to accepting that street art isn’t to everyone’s liking. It was just a question of finding a formula that even his grandma would grasp. And he found the answer right there, at home. Not at his gran’s place, but his mum’s.
El grafiti no gusta a todo el mundo. Y a las autoridades, menos. Thomas Dambo lo sabe por experiencia: “Me cansé de huir de la policía y de que nadie apreciase mi esfuerzo por embellecer la ciudad”. Dambo’s mum had always loved birds. She could spend hours and hours gazing through the window, watching them fly past. In recent years, though, she’d observed their numbers drop steadily in her city, Copenhagen. Dambo set out to change this negative dynamic. And along the way, to show that those who believe street art is synonymous with vandalism are mistaken.

His initiative started out from the theory that birds were abandoning Copenhagen because they no longer considered it their home. So why not create houses specifically designed for them? Perhaps then they’d feel the city was theirs once more.

As with his other creations, Dambo used recycled materials to build the nests. A factory gave him enough pallets to create a sizeable housing development for birds. The artist also managed to persuade a paint brand to donate a whole batch of unsaleable product.

With all of this material, he launched the Happy City Birds project in 2006. Since then, the number of bird homes Dambo has built across Copenhagen and other cities such as Beirut totals over three thousand.

aría Prandi was an active woman, passionate about mountaineering and nature. One of her greatest loves was to pick up her backpack and put on her hiking boots to enjoy the fresh air and a trek in the countryside. Coger la mochila y calzarse las botas de trekking para disfrutar del aire libre y de las caminatas por el campo era una de sus mayores pasiones. Pero en 2015, un cáncer de mama la obligó a dejar de lado durante un tiempo su gran afición.
The treatment with chemotherapy, through effective, was extremely tough. Her body felt exhausted, drained of energy, and there were moments when she thought that nothing would ever be the same again. She searched out information, though, and discovered that exercise could help recover her vitality.

After María read this information, mountaineering came straight back to mind. It was time to get back to nature.

One of the recommendations doctors give to breast cancer patients, once they have recovered, is to protect their arm and shoulder from any kind of pressure or weight so as to prevent lymphedema. Traditional backpacks didn’t meet this new requirement and María wasn’t prepared to let other people carry her gear.
Una de las indicaciones que los médicos dan a sus pacientes con cáncer de mama, una vez recuperadas, es que deben proteger el brazo y el hombro de cualquier presión o peso para evitar la aparición de un linfedema. La mochila tradicional no facilitaba esa prevención y María no estaba dispuesta a echar sobre otros el peso de su equipaje de viaje.
“When you finish treatment, they tell you that you have to do sport, physical exercise, and without a backpack that’s often impossible,” explained María Prandi in an interview. “You can’t go on trips, hiking… It’s also important emotionally to feel independent, free, strong like before, and the backpack helps you to achieve that.”
“Cuando acabas el tratamiento, te dicen que tienes que hacer deporte, actividad física, y sin mochila, muchas veces, es imposible”, comentaba María Prandi en una entrevista. “No puedes ir a hacer excursiones, caminar… Es importante, también, emocionalmente, sentirte independiente, libre, fuerte como antes, y la mochila te ayuda a conseguirlo”.

pressure that area where she’d had surgery. And as she couldn’t find anything in the market, she decided to design one herself. The result is Woman’sBack, backpacks designed for women who have lived through breast cancer and don’t want to sacrifice their freedom or self-sufficiency. Prandi and Lali Costa are the cofounders of this brand, in collaboration with another small group of women. From their workshop in Barcelona, the team customise backpacks produced by other brands (Alpina is one of them) to the needs of each user. This is done according to the back and breast measurements of each customer, depending on which arm is affected and the level of outdoor activity they plan to undertake. These backpacks substitute one of the shoulder straps for another located underarm, which is connected to the waistline at the opposite side. To improve the fit to the woman’s back, they are also secured at the waist. In this way, the weight is distributed proportionally and the backpack is both stable and comfortable to carry. Since their launch a few months ago, the Woman’sBack designs have gradually improved. Thanks to an agreement reached with the Sant Pau de Barcelona Hospital, the company has been able to test their backpacks among other patients at the centre. Suggestions from these women, who trialled the packs at Nordic walking classes together with their physiotherapists, have allowed the firm to improve the fit and make the backpacks even more comfortable. This collaboration with Sant Pau Hospital has also led to a commitment from Prandi and Costa’s company to donate part of the profits from the sale of these backpacks to support research into lymphedema carried out at the centre. The Woman’sBack website (womansback.com), where the backpacks can be purchased, also aims to provide a support community for women affected by breast cancer to recover as soon as possible from the exhausting treatment process.

Prandi y Lali Costa son las cofundadoras de esta marca, en colaboración con otro pequeño grupo de mujeres. El equipo se encarga de hacer la adaptación de las mochilas de otras marcas (Alpina y Montane) a las necesidades de cada usuaria en sus talleres de Barcelona. Lo hacen en función de las medidas de espalda y pecho de cada compradora, según sea el brazo afectado y según la actividad outdoor que se requiera. La mochila sustituye una de las dos tiras del hombro por otra que se sitúa debajo de la axila y que se engancha a la cintura del lado opuesto. Para mejorar la sujeción a la espalda de la mujer, va sujeta también a la cintura. De esta manera, el peso queda repartido proporcionalmente y resulta más estable y cómoda. Los diseños de Woman’sBack han ido mejorando desde su lanzamiento hace algunos meses. Gracias a un acuerdo que alcanzaron con el Hospital de Sant Pau de Barcelona, han podido testar sus mochilas en otras pacientes del centro. Las sugerencias de estas mujeres, que las probaron en algunas clases de marcha nórdica realizadas junto a sus fisioterapeutas, han permitido precisar el ajuste de sujeción para hacerlas aún más cómodas. Fruto de esa colaboración ha nacido el compromiso de la empresa de Prandi y Costa con el Hospital de Sant Pau para donar parte de los beneficios que se obtengan de la venta de estas mochilas a la investigación del linfedema que se lleva a cabo en ese centro. La página web de Woman’sBack (womansback.com), desde donde es posible adquirir estas mochilas, pretende ser también una comunidad de mujeres afectadas por el cáncer de mama que quieran recuperarse lo antes posible de todo el duro proceso del tratamiento.

Bringing farmers’ markets back from the brink MERCADOS GRANJEROS DE PRAGA: LA RECUPERACIÓN DE UNA ESPECIE EXTINTA TEXT ESTEBAN ORDÓÑEZ
T
he proliferation of farmers’ markets in Prague has been devised by following the same philosophy as saving species in danger of extinction. “Under Communist rule, farmers’ markets didn’t exist in our country. There were only vegetable markets, which started to disappear after the Velvet Revolution and completely vanished during the 1990s,” says Jiří Sedláček, the chairman of the Archetyp association of farmers’ markets.
La proliferación de los actuales mercados de granjeros en Praga se preparó al calor de la misma filosofía que se seguiría para reimplantar una especie en riesgo extremo de extinción. «Durante el comunismo, los mercados de agricultores no existían en nuestro país. Solo había mercados de verduras, que comenzaron a desaparecer después de la Revolución de Terciopelo y se esfumaron del todo en los 90», cuenta JiÐí SedláÐek, presidente de la asociación de mercados granjeros Archetyp.
In 2008, a study was carried out in order to find niches within the urban ecosystem that would be favourable for the reintroduction of these markets and, little by little, parts of the Czech capital have taken on the scent of the countryside.

The most popular of these new affairs is the Nápkavka Market (Saturdays): “It is usually very busy. The location is right in the city centre near the River Moldau, and from the site there is a wonderful view of Prague Castle and Charles Bridge,” says Sedláček, who also has complimentary words for the Kubánské Square Market (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) and the Řezáčovo Square Market (Saturdays): “these are quieter but the produce is just as good. What is more, you can buy snacks to take away. They have a good atmosphere and feel more like local markets,” he advises.
El más conocido de todos es el de Nápkavka (abre los sábados): «Suele haber mucha gente. The activity of these markets goes beyond just browsing for vegetables: they have become social occasions, for enjoying a leisurely moment and a chat. “People visit throughout the day, maybe for brunch or a coffee, or a glass of wine or a beer. They come to talk to their neighbours.” This rare species, which had disappeared from the city, has not returned through a taste for the picturesque or the decorative, but rather through a realization of the benefits that these markets offer communities, as well as a chance to give something back to farmers. “This arrangement gives producers a place to sell goods at a fair price. It removes the

The vitality of these urban fairs is supported by a change in mentality. “People are slowly going back to their roots, they are realizing the value of traditional agriculture. They want fresh produce, without the additives,” says the association chairman.
La vitalidad de estas ferias urbanas se apoya en un cambio de mentalidad. «La gente está volviendo lentamente a sus raíces, está empezando a darse cuenta del valor de la agricultura tradicional. Ahora se buscan productos frescos, sin aditivos», reflexiona el presidente de la asociación.
Sedláček sends a clear message to decision-makers: “Politicians need to support small companies and local farms, and turn their backs on the big agricultural firms. Young people are really concerned about what they eat, and in the last ten years marketing campaigns have started to focus on them. However, often the big campaigns are all just a pretence, there is nothing real behind the message.”
SedláÐek lanza un llamado silvestre a las altas instancias: «La política debe apoyar a las pequeñas empresas y granjas locales, y dejar de dar dinero a las grandes empresas agrícolas. Los jóvenes se preocupan por la calidad de lo que consumen y, en los últimos diez años, las campañas de marketing también se han enfocado en ello; aunque, lamentablemente, a veces, es solo para simular que apoyan el mensaje».
“Look after nature” is a motto that only makes sense superficially. After all, it implies that we could choose to do otherwise, yet ultimately this is impossible because we are nature. “We have to start with ourselves if we want to save the environment and stop species from dying out.” If a new hubbub of buyers and sellers has appeared in certain places around Prague, several times a month, this is what it is all about: to normalise a healthier way of relating to nature, through what we eat.
Apoyar a la naturaleza es una frase extraña, porque incluye la posibilidad de no hacerlo y, al final, la naturaleza somos nosotros: «Debemos comenzar por nosotros mismos si queremos salvar el medio ambiente y detener la extinción de especies». De eso trata, según SedláÐek, el barullo que se instaura en distintos puntos de Praga varias veces a la semana; de normalizar una forma de relacionarse con la naturaleza a través de lo que comemos.

Londres, Praga y Copenhague London is a city of parks; every neighbourhood has its own and Carolina enjoys them all, just as much as she likes browsing in the British capital’s many second-hand shops. Noemi also likes to wander, but in the cobbled streets of Prague. A trdelnik with chocolate helps to keep her strength up. Ana prefers to explore the streets of Copenhagen by bike, admiring the town houses and other historical buildings with their colourful facades. London, Prague and Copenhagen: it was love at first visit!
Londres es la ciudad de los parques. Hay varios en cada barrio y Carolina disfruta tanto de un paseo por ellos como regateando en una de las muchas tiendas de segunda mano que hay en esta ciudad. Noemi también camina, pero por las calles adoquinadas de Praga, eso sí, con un Trdelnik de chocolate para reponer fuerzas. Y Ana prefiere la bici para recorrer las calles de Copenhague y disfrutar más de los palacios, castillos y fachadas coloristas. Londres, Praga y Copenhague, amor a primera… visita.

London
Carolina recalls her years in London and her visits to its many parks with nostalgia. A favourite habit when she is in the city is to buy a coffee at one of its numerous coffee shops, take a stroll, find a quiet corner to sit on a wooden bench (“In memory of…”) and watch the ducks, squirrels and even foxes, if there are not many people around. “Wandering the different parts of London always offers surprises: looking at the Victorian houses with their colourful doors and the little gardens out the front. And of course all the charity shops, which always smell a bit stale but you can find some great bargain or other.”
Carolina recuerda con nostalgia sus años en Londres y los paseos por sus múltiples parques. Disfruta sentándose en cualquiera de sus bancos de madera "In memory of ..." , tomar un café recién comprado en cualquiera de sus múltiples cafeterías, echar a andar, encontrar un rincón tranquilo y observar los patos, ardillas e incluso zorros si hay poca gente alrededor. “Dar una vuelta por los barrios de Londres siempre me depara sorpresas: observar sus fachadas victorianas, sus puertas de colores, los pequeños jardines a la entrada y por supuesto sus tiendas de segunda mano (Charitys), donde siempre huele a rancio y hay una ganga que comprar”.

When Noemi walks the cobbled streets of Prague with a warm chocolate trdelnik in hand she feels as if time has stopped and that at any moment a horse-drawn carriage will appear around the corner. “Now that the weather is warmer, I like to remember the special feeling you get when the city is under the snow and all the noise is muffled. The cold is bearable, particularly when you know that at the end of your walk you have a beer spa waiting for you. The city has quite a few of them: you relax in a wooden bath and there is a beer tap just for you… it’s a special treat on a wonderful trip.”
Cuando Noemi paseaba por las calles adoquinadas de Praga con un Trdelnik de chocolate calentito en las manos se sentía como si el tiempo se hubiera detenido y en cualquier momento al doblar la esquina fuese a aparecer un carruaje de caballos. “Ahora que empieza el buen tiempo, a mí me gusta recordar el toque especial de esta ciudad bajo la nieve, con todos los ruidos amortiguados. “El frio es soportable sobre todo cuando sabes que lo que te espera para finalizar el viaje es uno de los muchos spas de cerveza que hay por la ciudad, donde te relajas en una bañerita de madera y un grifo de cerveza a tu entera disposición… sin duda, la guinda de un viaje increíble”.

Copenhagen is so flat and clean and there are so many bicycle lanes that Ana can’t imagine any other way of seeing it than by bike. She says that two wheels is the best introduction to its streets and canals, lined by stately town houses. There are colourful buildings, some of them very old, mansions and even a castle. There are also green areas and the famous sculpture of the Little Mermaid on the waterfront. “Although I had been told about it I was struck by how small it was. Also, you can get very close, almost close enough to touch it.” One thing worth leaving your bicycle for is a canal trip, another way to get to know the Danish capital. “Water is such a big part of this city.”

Seeing Rome through The Great Beauty UNA CAMINATA A TRAVÉS DE ‘LA GRAN BELLEZA’ ROMANA TEXT DAVID GARCÍA | PHOTOGRAPHY VERA ERESTA

ome has everything it takes to flood the senses and overpower them: history, excess, power, conflict, decadence and the most extraordinary beauty. These are elements that have been taken up by the film director Paolo Sorrentino as his language, extracting the essence of classicism and sprinkling it with the strongest flavours of that unreal realism that has always reigned in the moviemaking of this transalpine country. Paolo Sorrentino is a Neapolitan, and if you know Naples you will understand a little of what that means. Yet it is he who has helped create the image of 21st-century Rome, using the ingredients that have characterized the city for the almost three millennia of its existence. The Italian filmmaker has created a very Roman film, all structured around a roster of snobs and beautiful people who live removed from mundane reality. The Great Beauty is an extravagant homage to Federico Fellini’s La dolce vita and is, above all, a visual delight whose scenes might have been carefully selected by the Rome tourist board. Our route begins on the Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, the site of an equestrian statue of one of the founders of united Italy. There on the statue pedestal is the motto which Garibaldi coined and his soldiers lived out in their commitment to take the peninsula’s ancient capital: Roma o morte, “Rome or Death”. Garibaldi looks out over the city from the top of a hill, so the route starts with a descent to the nearby Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, known by Romans as Il Fontanone, 500 metres away. A part of the film’s tour de force opening scene strokes our eardrums with the gentle sounds of the fountain’s waters as a female choir sings from its central balcony. Three minutes further down the hill, by the Spanish Real Academia, is Bramante’s Renaissance masterpiece, the Tempietto. In Sorrentino’s film, the protagonist, Jep Gambardella, has a confrontation with his past here.
La imagen se dio cuenta de que Roma tenía todo lo que necesitaba para invadir los sentidos como un torrente: resistencia, eternidad, exceso, desafíos, decadencia y la belleza más absoluta. Quizás porque así es Italia, Paolo Sorrentino decidió que ese sería su lenguaje, el que extrae la esencia del clasicismo y lo espolvorea con los sabores más saturados de ese realismo irreal que invadió hace un siglo el país transalpino. Paolo Sorrentino, napolitano él –y quien haya visitado Nápoles ya sabe todas las connotaciones que el origen conlleva–, ha construido el imaginario de la Roma del siglo XXI a través de ingredientes que nunca han dejado de estar en la ciudad de los 28 siglos. El italiano ha plasmado todo en ese catálogo de snobs abstraídos de la realidad mundana que es La gran belleza, su extravagante derivada de La dolce vita de Federico Fellini y, sobre todo, una delicia visual cuyos escenarios pudieran parecer gustosamente escogidos por la entidad responsable del turismo romano. Vamos a comenzar la caminata en la Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, donde la estatua ecuestre de uno de los padres de la Italia unificada explicita en un pedestal el lema con el que adhirió a su causa a un buen número de soldados dispuestos a tomar la ciudad: Roma o muerte. Garibaldi contempla desde las alturas de una colina, así que comenzamos el descenso hasta la cercana Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, a unos 500 metros, conocida por todo romano como Il Fontanone. La fuente acaricia los oídos con el sonido de agua en la escena que abre la película de Sorrentino con un coro femenino en su balcón central. A tres minutos cuesta abajo, junto a la Real Academia de España en Roma, se encuentra el Tempietto di Bramante, otro de los lugares en los que Jep Gambardella se enfrenta a su pasado. El paseo continúa escaleras abajo, de callejeo por el Trastevere, donde el bar San Calisto, en la plaza del mismo nombre, sirve de refugio al escritor protagonista de La gran belleza en pleno duelo sobrevenido. La cinta de Sorrentino consigue, además, un milagro: elimina de la ecuación del San Calisto a los bulliciosos jóvenes que conviven con la fauna autóctona de la tercera edad, más de salita interior que de terraza. El bar es un viaje al pasado que, como siempre ocurre en Roma, nunca se hará en soledad. Quizás por eso, Jep Gambardella diga en la película que “los mejores habitantes de Roma son los turistas”, porque siempre están ahí y, en algún momento, se despiden y se van. Un romano como Gambardella no sale nunca de Roma.

The route takes us down towards the river and into the narrow streets of Trastevere. Here stands the Bar San Calisto, in the square of the same name, which acts as a refuge for Gambardella in his mourning. In The Great Beauty, Sorrentino blocks out the sound of the bar’s punters: a group of rowdy youngsters who share its space with the elderly regulars who use the bar as an extension of their sitting rooms. The bar sends Gambardella, once again, back into his past. As always happens in Rome, this is not a journey that you undertake alone. This is perhaps why Jep Gambardella says, in the film, that “Rome’s best inhabitants are the tourists”, because they are always there until the moment arrives when they say goodbye and go. A true Roman like Gambardella never leaves. Now we leave Trastevere, walk for 25 minutes and climb another of Rome’s seven hills, the Aventine, up to the Monastery of the Knights of Malta. Its garden is enclosed, but a peek through the keyhole of its gate offers a surprising view of the dome of St Peter’s. You will know where to go by the queue of people waiting to take a photo through the lock. Close by is the Basilica of Santa Sabina and the Savello Park, sometimes known as the Orange Garden, famous for its orange trees and its classic view of Rome, with the Tiber at your feet and the Vatican as a backdrop. Back down into the city, about half an hour on foot, takes you to Imperial Rome. Here, the film’s main character has his modest little apartment, complete with terrace and views of the Coliseum. 1.5 kilometres towards the Piazza Venezia is the Capitoline Museum. This, the world’s oldest museum, houses the gigantic ancient statue of Marforio, one of Rome’s six talking statues and shown on the film poster of The Great Beauty. 15 minutes away, in the direction of the famous squares of Rome, is the Palazzo Spada, known for its legendary optical illusion designed by the architect Borromini. Here he created a gallery that plays with perspective in such a way as to fool us into thinking it is much longer than it appears. The longest walk is left for the end. Three-quarters of an hour will bring us to the National Etruscan Museum, in the film the venue of a photography exhibition that will trigger Jep Gambardella’s brush with time. And ultimately, that is what Sorrentino’s tale is all about. The main character, talking about the past, says that “Rome makes you lose a lot of time, it distracts you.” For this reason, he didn’t start a second novel after his first success, 40 years previously. Gambardella said that he wouldn’t write again until he found the great beauty. All the time it was in front of his eyes, but always seeing it, he stopped appreciating it; something that should never happen to any of us.

Toca salir del Trastevere, caminar unos 25 minutos y subir otra de las siete colinas de Roma, la que sostiene en su cumbre el Priorato de la Orden de los Caballeros de Malta. Su jardín está limitado por una puerta a través de cuya cerradura se consigue la vista más peculiar de la cúpula de la Basílica de San Pietro. Sabrán el sitio exacto por la cola de personas ávidas de hacer una foto a dicha cerradura. Unos metros más allá se encuentra la Basilica Santa Sabina de Aventino y el Giardino degli Aranci, un jardín repleto de naranjos en cuyo borde se encuentra uno de los pósteres más espectaculares de Roma, con el Tíber a los pies y el Vaticano al fondo. 25 minutos de paseo cuesta abajo nos llevan a la Roma Imperial, donde el protagonista de La gran belleza tenía su pisito con terraza y vistas al Coliseo, una cosita modesta. 1,5 kilómetros en dirección a la Piazza Venezia se encuentra el Museo Capitolino, la casa que da cobijo a la colosal estatua del Marforio, una de las seis estatuas parlantes de Roma y la que se muestra en el cartel de la película de Paolo Sorrentino. Tras 15 minutos de callejeo en dirección a la Roma de las plazas míticas, se alcanza la Palazzo Spada, el lugar de mayor troleo conocido a cargo de Borromini. El arquitecto creó una galería que juega con la perspectiva para dejar la mente del visitante tiritando a causa del verdadero tamaño del lugar. La caminata más larga queda para el final. 45 minutos hasta el Museo Nacional Etrusco, en cuya galería se muestra la exposición fotográfica con la que Gambardella se estrella contra el paso del tiempo. Porque, al fin y al cabo, de eso va la fábula de Sorrentino. Dice el protagonista de la historia que “Roma te hace perder mucho tiempo, te desconcentra”. Y que por eso no emprendió una segunda novela tras su pequeño éxito 40 años antes. Jep Gambardella decía que no escribiría hasta que no encontrase la gran belleza. La tenía ante sus ojos pero, de tanto verla, dejó de apreciarla. Y eso es algo que no debería ocurrir nunca.

olfgang and Rocio were adulterers but in an innocent kind of way. They’d met through a famous internet dating service and, for some reason, both had lied about their place of residence and stated “Paris” when they filled in the online form. Probably because they both loved their respective partners in Berlin and Madrid. And probably because they didn’t want to complicate life beyond a bit of fun from which they were looking to gain no more than the odd butterfly in the stomach. But things got more complicated. It’s common knowledge that these apps use algorithms to provide users with contacts who live within a certain radius of kilometres from their homes. Both Wolfang and Rocio knew that if they wrote “Paris,” and if their profiles aroused someone’s interest, then that someone would live in the City of Light. The fact that both were studying French for various reasons also contributed to this improbable chain of events unfolding. And if that weren’t enough, the pair were both ardent fans of classic black and white cinema, regular attenders at the screenings organised by the film clubs in their respective cities. Of all the movies from that period, there was one which fascinated them both; it wasn’t long before they discovered it while chatting on the app. The film in question was Hôtel du Nord, directed in the 1930s by the now almost forgotten Marcel Carné. In fact, Wolfgang had chosen as his nickname on the app Annabelle85, the female lead. Rocio, meanwhile, had opted for Louis_Jouvet, who in the movie plays the protector of an enchanting prostitute linked to the hotel. Transcribed below are some fragments of their virtual conversations in the chat, which give a more precise idea of the atmosphere in which their virtual relationship developed before their first physical contact. Annabelle85: To mention Hôtel du Nord is to recall the exquisite decadence of the Canal St. Martin… Louis_Jouvet: But don’t forget that the protagonists meet up there to honour a suicide pact which doesn’t work out, thanks to which the whole plot develops in different directions. Annabelle85: It would be great to visit the real setting, don’t you think? I love how the film exudes poetic realism. Louis_Jouvet: Well, we both live in Paris… If we get along so well writing online, just imagine what could happen in a room at the Hôtel du Nord. Fate wished to smile on their fantasy and, for different reasons, both Wolfgang and Rocio had a few days free in their diaries around the same time. Each concocted a solid excuse so that their respective partners wouldn’t even remotely suspect their intentions. At that moment, their adultery ceased to be an innocent game and turned into something delicious, something which neither of them had experienced for years. The fluttering in their stomachs
Wolfgang y Rocío eran adúlteros, pero de un modo inocente. Se habían conocido en un famoso portal de citas, y por alguna razón los dos habían mentido acerca de su lugar de residencia y los dos habían consignado “París” al rellenar el formulario en línea. Probablemente porque amaban a sus respectivas parejas, en Berlín y en Madrid. Y probablemente porque no querían complicarse la vida, más allá de un juego del que no esperaban obtener más que un cierto cosquilleo en el estómago. Pero las cosas se complicaron. Bien es sabido que en estos portales los algortimos facilitan a los usuarios el contacto de personas que residen en un determinado radio de kilómetros a la redonda de sus hogares. Los dos pensaron que si escribían “París”, y si sus perfiles despertaban el interés de alguien, ese alguien viviría en la Ciudad de la Luz. El hecho de que ambos estuvieran estudiando francés por muy diversos motivos también propició que la improbable cadena de acontecimientos tuviera lugar. Por si ello fuera poco, los dos eran unos enamorados del cine clásico en blanco y negro, y eran asiduos a las proyecciones que organizaban las filmotecas de sus respectivas ciudades. De entre todas las películas de aquel período, había una que les fascinaba, y no tardaron de descubrirlo en el chat de la aplicación. Se trataba de Hôtel du Nord, dirigida en los años 30 por el ya casi olvidado Marcel Carné. De hecho, Wolfgang había elegido como nickname en el portal el de Annabelle85, la mujer protagonista; mientras que Rocío había elegido Louis_Jouvet, que en la película encarna al protector de una entrañable meretriz vinculada al hotel. Annabelle85.- Estaría bien visitar el lugar en cuestión. ¿no te parece? Me encanta el realismo poético que rezuma la película. Louis_Jouvet.- Bueno, los dos vivimos en París... Si nos llevamos tan bien escribiendo en este chat, imagínate las cosas que podrían suceder en una habitación del Hôtel du Nord. Quiso el azar favorecer su fantasía, pues tanto Wolfgang como Rocío tenían por distintas razones unos días libres en la misma región del calendario, y cada uno por su cuenta urdió una buena excusa para que sus respectivas parejas no sospecharan ni remotamente sus intenciones. En aquel momento el adulterio dejó de ser inocente para convertirse en algo delicioso, que ninguno de ellos experimentaba desde hacía años. El cosquilleo en el estómago se convirtió en un enjambre de polillas, y los dos miraban el calendario contando los días que les separaban de la cita.

Las esclusas se abren de manera misteriosa a horas intempestivas y el viento barre la hojarasca de la vecina plaza de la République cuando, de manera inopinada, surge ese falso río que es un canal. Y el Hôtel du Nord, por supuesto, escenario de uno de los filmes (en realidad una trilogía) más célebres del cine temprano del siglo XX,
The locks open mysteriously at ungodly hours and the wind sweeps the leaves from the neighbouring Place de la République. Then, unexpectedly, emerges this false river, this canal. And of course, Hôtel du Nord, the setting for one of the most famous films (in fact a trilogy) of the early 20th century. It was Napoleon himself who ordered this canal to be built in 1802, with the idea of connecting it to l’Ourq, further north, in order to supply drinking water to the thirsty, rapidly growing capital. Building work took over 20 years and it was finally opened in 1825. The route required nine canal locks to tackle the sloping terrain and also has two unique swinging bridges. Their metal balustrades painted in green have the air of a carefully abandoned garden, with an impressionist touch. When the chosen day and time arrived, Wolfang expected to meet a man who went by the name of Louis_Jouvet and Rocio, a woman with the pseudonym of Annabelle85. In order to recognise each other, both had to carry a copy of the book Hôtel du Nord by Eugène Dabit, upon which the film was based. Once inside the hotel, still separately, the pair observed couples lazily playing chess in the courtyard garden, waiting for the famous chef, Pascal Brébant, to prepare their lunch. The scene was framed by heavy velvet curtains, half-light and a large library with an antique, reverential feel which maintained the atmosphere of the 1930s. It was precisely the library that the pair had identified as the most logical spot to find someone carrying a book. Among the hundreds of bound volumes, golden letters on their spines, the much awaited encounter took place. “Are you Annabelle?” asked Rocio, somewhere between incredulous and amused, directing her question to the strapping bloke of almost two metres height who was indeed carrying the aforementioned novel. “And you’re Louis_Jouvet?” replied Wolfgang, visibly taken aback, like someone caught out doing something unconfessably naughty. The respective photos they’d posted on the app did not coincide and nor, of course, did their gender or nationality. Only their love for an old black and white film seemed to provide a solid bond between the pair. Both spoke fluent French, with a strong German accent in Wolfgang’s case and a Spanish accent in Rocio’s. “I don’t mind. Affairs should be like this, unexpected,” said Rocio, to break the ice.

Su construcción se prolongó durante más de veinte años y fue inaugurado en 1825. El recorrido necesita nueve esclusas para un desnivel muy pronunciado, y cuenta con dos anacrónicos puentes giratorios únicos en su especie. Sus balaustradas metálicas pintadas de verde le dan un aire a jardín cuidadosamente descuidado, con un toque impresionista. Cuando llegó el día y la hora señalados, Wolfgang esperaba encontrar a un hombre que se hacía llamar Louis_Jouvet, y Rocío a una mujer con el seudónimo de Annabelle85. Para reconocerse los dos debían portar un ejemplar de la novela homónima de Eugène Dabit en la que se basa la película. Ya en el interior del propio hotel, y cada uno por su lado, pudieron contemplar parejas indolentes jugando al ajedrez en el patio ajardinado, esperando que el celebrado chef Pascal Brébant les preparase la comida. Todo ello presidido por pesadas cortinas de terciopelo, ambiente a media luz y una gran biblioteca de corte antiguo y reverente, salvaguardando la atmósfera de los años 30. Y fue precisamente en la biblioteca donde los dos pensaron que sería el lugar más lógico para encontrar a alguien con un libro. Entre sus cientos de volúmenes encuadernados y con letras doradas en sus lomos, se produjo el esperado contacto. —¿Tú eres Annabelle? —preguntó entre incrédula y divertida Rocío al hombretón de casi dos metros de estatura que efectivamente mostraba la portada del mencionado libro. —¿Y tú Louis_Jouvet? —respondió Wolfgang visiblemente turbado, como alguien a quien le sorprenden cometiendo una travesura inconfesable. No coincidían ni el físico que mostraban en las respectivas fotografías que habían subido al portal de contactos ni por supuesto el género ni la nacionalidad. Solo su amor por un viejo filme en blanco y negro parecía actuar como una sólida argamasa de unión entre ambos. Los dos hablaban francés fluido, pero con fuerte acento alemán en el caso de Wolfgang y español en el de Rocío. —A mí no me importa. Las aventuras han de ser así, inesperadas —dijo Rocío para romper el hielo.

hen the Romans founded Brigantium they must have stood on the rocky outcrop of Punta Eiras and observed the end of the known world. They called it Finis Terrae (“Land’s End”) and the name tells of their belief that beyond the wide ocean was nothing. Or maybe worse, a place where monsters roamed; a place that was not to be sought out and visited.

It was on this little peninsula that they built a tower: a lighthouse to warn sailors away from these hazardous rocks, a more immediate danger than any monsters, however terrible. The lighthouse became known as the Farum Brigantium, and since the late 1st century or early 2nd century AD it has kept watch as far as the horizon. Perhaps it is no surprise that such a distinctive structure has been called many things during its long history. In the Middle Ages it was known as the Old Lighthouse, or Old Castle, and at some point between that time and this, the name of the Tower of Hercules became attached to it. This latter tag is based on a legend linking the building of the tower to the mythical hero’s victory over the giant Geryon.

Europe has many Roman remains, but the Tower of Hercules has something about it that is truly unique: it is the world’s only Roman lighthouse still in operation. What is more, at 37.2 metres high, it is one of the tallest ancient buildings that has come down to us. These are two of the main reasons why, in June 2009, UNESCO logged the building as World Heritage and recognized its “contribution as unique testimony of a civilization that has now disappeared.”

This summer brings the tenth anniversary of the tower’s inclusion of the select list of UN heritage sites. The monument is not just of interest to visitors: it is also a symbol for the people of A Coruña, who see in it a reflection of their personality and history.

The city is running an extensive programme of events and cultural activities that will be open to everyone. The programme will run throughout the month of June and centres on a series of talks by writers and experts on matters related to the lighthouse, emigration and literature. There will be an exhibition of old photographs of the tower, as well as historical recreations, workshops for children and activities with an environmental theme. Furthermore, atmospheric night-time visits to the monument will take place during the last week of June. Two of the anniversary period’s great attractions both fall on the 29th of June. Firstly, the audio-visual show, the Light and Sound of Hercules, will be projected onto the walls of the monument. This video mapping will tell the history of the Roman lighthouse and touch on some of the myths linked to it. The second, programmed for the same evening, is a special concert by the Galician singer Mercedes Peón, and will be performed near the tower. It is a night intended to bring the celebrations to a perfect end, all in the open air and focussing on the tower itself. However, the tenth anniversary of the World Heritage declaration is not the only red-letter day to take place in A Coruña in June. Not far from the Tower of Hercules is the Finisterrae Aquarium which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary on the 5th of June. For culture, there is more in the immediate area: Domus, the world’s first interactive museum dedicated to the human body. The building alone is worth a visit: a work by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, winner of the 2019 Pritzker Architecture Prize. There is more: the San Xóan fiestas, now declared of International Tourist Interest by the Spanish Government. The night of San Xóan, or St John, is the focus of the festival and its most magical moment. Bonfires are lit around the city, with the most impressive being those on the Riazor and Orzán beaches. There are also sardine barbecues and preparation of the famous queimada drink, traditional in Galicia. As the summer begins, visitors will be mingling with the people of A Coruña to celebrate past, present and future.

En primer lugar, con el espectáculo audiovisual Luz e son de Hércules que se proyectará sobre las paredes del monumento, un video mapping en el que se narrará la historia y la mitología asociadas al faro romano. Esa misma noche se celebrará en el entorno de la Torre un concierto exclusivo de la artista gallega Mercedes Peón, que será el auténtico broche de oro a todo el programa de actividades. Ambos espectáculos serán al aire libre. No es el décimo aniversario de la declaración de la Torre como Patrimonio de la Humanidad la única oferta cultural que existe en A Coruña durante el mes de junio. En el entorno de la Torre de Hércules se encuentra el Aquarium Finisterrae, que celebra su 20º aniversario el 5 de junio, y la Domus, el primer museo interactivo del mundo dedicado al ser humano, obra del arquitecto japonés Arata Isozaki, premio Pritzker de Arquitectura en 2019. Y, por supuesto, las fiestas de San Xóan, declaradas de Interés Turístico Internacional. El 23 de junio la ciudad sale a festejar su noche más mágica. A las hogueras (las más célebres se encienden en las playas de Riazor y Orzán, pero pueden encontrarse en todos los barrios) se suman las típicas sardiñadas, la queimada y las verbenas que visten de fiesta A Coruña. Y todos, los vecinos de la ciudad y los que llegan de otros lugares del mundo, están invitados a esta fiesta que inaugura el verano.

Barcelona - Berlín. Seat 16E Berlin is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. I love its wide avenues and magnificent buildings. But if you board the “die Welt” hot air balloon in the city centre (near Checkpoint Charlie), you’ll be able to enjoy Berlin from above. This floating viewpoint rises to a height of 150 metres and the views are stunning. From there, you can see Berlin’s most emblematic buildings: the Reichstag, the cathedral, museum island… It’s an unbeatable experience.

I don’t tend to visit the same place twice because life’s short and there are so many things to do. San Sebastián, however, has earned a spot on my list of “Places worth going back to.” The sense of relaxation as you gaze out at the beaches of La Concha or Ordaneta, where, at the weekends, music and art come together; and those bars in the old town where you can choose one of the pintxos that make the city of Donosti therapeutic for the soul. Without a doubt, I’d stay much longer in this gorgeous city, especially in the area of Miramar.
No suelo visitar dos veces el mismo lugar porque en esta vida hay muy poco tiempo y muchas cosas por hacer. Pero San Sebastián se ha ganado un puesto en mi ránking de “Lugares a los que regresar”. La relajación que sientes al contemplar las playas de La Concha u Ordaneta, donde los fines de semana se mezclan música y arte; y esos bares del casco viejo en los que poder elegir los pinchos hacen que Donosti sea una terapia para el alma. Sin duda, me quedaría mucho más tiempo en esta preciosa ciudad, especialmente en el área de Miramar.
Berlín es, sin duda, una de las ciudades más bonitas de Europa. Me encantan sus calles, tan amplias y sus magníficos edificios. Pero si subes al globo aerostático “die Welt” que hay en el centro (cerca de Checkpoint Charlie), podrás disfrutar de Berlín viéndola desde arriba. Este mirador de aire caliente sube hasta una altura de 150 metros y las vistas son impresionantes. Málaga - Barcelona. Seat 12A Arrive at the hotel, get out of the taxi, grab the suitcase and…crash! Glasses straight to the floor. I’m seriously short-sighted, so a trip to the optician was inevitable. I went to the nearest I could find and it turned out to be a winner. It was the Etnia flagship that had just opened. Apart from helping me to choose a new frame, the opticians showed me to the store’s rooftop to enjoy a drink. Along with the most beautiful glasses I’ve ever owned, I also left the place with the most incredible views of Barcelona and the memory of a truly pleasant afternoon.
Mallorca → SANTIAGO VICENTE MAINAR
Zaragoza - Mallorca. Seat 29A It was my fourth time in Mallorca but the first visit for my girlfriend, who I wanted to show around the island I had talked about so much. For her, it was a huge surprise. She was used to the beach destination image which appears on television and couldn’t believe the lush forests, steep slopes of the Tramuntana and winding roads that lead to marvellous villages such as Sóller, Pollensa, Cape Formentor or Alcudia. The city of Palma is also worth taking the time to look around unhurried. After ten days in Mallorca, my girlfriend was convinced we have to go back.
Era mi cuarta vez en Mallorca, pero la primera para mi pareja, a quien acompañé para que conociera la isla de la que tanto le había hablado. Y la sorpresa para ella fue enorme. Acostumbrada a la imagen de destino de playa que muestra la televisión, no podía creerse la frondosidad de los bosques, las escarpadas alturas de la sierra de Tramuntana y las culebreantes carreteras que te llevan a pueblos maravillosos como Sóller, Pollensa, el cabo de Formentor o la Alcudia. También la ciudad de Palma merece un tiempo dedicado a ella para poder recorrerla con calma. Después de diez días en Mallorca, mi pareja está convencida de que hay que volver.
Llegar al hotel, bajar del taxi, coger la maleta y ¡crash! gafas al suelo. Mis muchas dioptrías hacían inevitable la visita a una óptica. Fui a la más cercana y acerté de lleno. Era la flagship de Etnia que acababa de inaugurarse. Además de asesorarme con la montura, los ópticos me invitaron a subir a la terraza de la tienda y a un refresco. Además de las gafas más bonitas que he tenido nunca, de allí me llevé unas vistas impresionantes de Barcelona y el recuerdo de una tarde de lo más agradable.

Ibiza - Madrid. Seat 14A I don’t like resorting to the word “getaway.” I love Madrid and when I have chance to travel there, the last thing on my mind is escaping. That’s why I prefer to use “excursions” to talk about the visits I usually make to La Granja when I spend a few days in the capital. A unique opportunity to enjoy a unique location, surrounded by nature and with suckling pig and butter beans as the stars of the local cuisine. It’s a great idea to finish off lunch with a serving of ponche segoviano (if you’ve space left for dessert.)
No me gusta recurrir al término ‘escapada’. Me encanta Madrid y cuando tengo ocasión de viajar allí en lo que menos pienso es en ‘escaparme’. Por eso prefiero hablar de ‘excursión’ para referirme a las visitas que suelo hacer a La Granja cuando paso unos días en la capital. Ocasión única para disfrutar de un lugar único, rodeado de naturaleza y con una gastronomía en la que los judiones y el cochinillo se llevan la palma. Muy recomendable rematar la comida con un ponche segoviano (si es que queda algo de sitio) .

Asturias is one of my favourite places in the world. As well as its delicious cuisine, there’s the charm of its towns and villages. In my last trip I discovered a gorgeous little village very close to Taramundi. It’s called Os Teixois and visiting is like travelling in time. Stone and slate houses emerge from an intense green landscape, and there’s a mill, a Roman ironmaking hammer and a fulling machine, used in the past to process linen or wool. Highly recommendable.
I’d already visited Seville on other occasions, but this time took advantage of the trip for a different kind of tourism. Together with my friend Irene, another Games of Thrones fan (or maybe geek?), we decided to visit some of the places used as locations in the series. It was great fun and really exciting to return to the Alcázar but now trying to visualise it as the Martell’s home and base for the government of Dorne. Or the ruins of Itálica, the Well of Dragons in the series. And yes, I admit that we did look skyward a couple of times, just in case we could spot Khaalesi flying overhead on one of her dragons (did I mention that we’re a bit geeky?)
Asturias es uno de mis lugares favoritos del mundo. A su deliciosa gastronomía, hay que sumar el encanto de sus aldeas y pueblos. En mi último viaje descubrí un pueblito precioso muy cerca de Taramundi. Se llama Os Teixois y es como hacer un viaje al pasado. En medio de un paisaje intensamente verde, se levanta esta aldea de casas de piedra y pizarra, que cuenta con un molino, un mazo romano para estirar el hierro y un batán, donde se machacaba antiguamente el lino y la lana. Muy recomendable.

Roma - Londres. Seat 15B Whenever I visit London with my children we make sure to visit the area of King’s Cross. Not only because it’s home to the station where Harry Potter took the train to Hogwarts, but also because there’s so much to do. For toddlers, I’d recommend spending some time at the fountains in Granary Square. If you download the Granary Squirt app, you can control the water jets yourself and even play Snake, the legendary video game by Nokia. Don’t worry about wifi. You can connect for free in the square.
Siempre que viajo a Londres con mis hijos no dejamos de visitar el barrio de King’s Cross. No solo porque allí se encuentra la estación donde Harry Potter cogía el tren hacia Hogwarts, sino también por sus muchos atractivos. Para los más pequeños, recomiendo pasar un rato en las fuentes de Granary Square. Si te descargas la app Granary Squirt podrás controlar los chorros a placer, incluso jugar al Snake, el mítico juego de los viejos Nokia. Por la wifi no te preocupes. Puedes conectarte gratuitamente a la de la plaza.
Conocía Sevilla de viajes anteriores, pero en esta ocasión aprovechamos para hacer turismo de forma distinta. Junto a mi amiga Irene, otra fan (¿o más bien friki?) de Juego de tronos, decidimos visitar algunos de los lugares que han servido como escenario para la serie. Fue divertidísimo y emocionante volver al Alcázar pero, ahora, tratando de visualizarlo como el hogar de los Martell, sede del gobierno de Dorne. O las ruinas de Itálica, Pozo Dragón en la serie. Y sí, reconozco que más de una vez levantamos el cuello para ver si veíamos volar por allí a la Khaalesi en uno de sus dragones (¿ya he dicho que somos un poco frikis?)
