SAN FRANCISCO ANA SIRBU, CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER AT NITRO, INC

Native Moldovan Ana Sirbu has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the fintech world, taking just 11 years to climb to the top of her game. She joined BlueVine in 2015 and has swiftly become a leading figure in the fintech company which has serviced more than 125,000 SMEs through its innovative digital pathways. An enthusiastic advocate of fintech, Sirbu entered the world of finance by banking on Wall Street. She then became a technology investor at Google Capital. The Harvard-educated pioneer, Sirbu is known for her conscientious attitude to leadership and her dedication to building businesses that assist millions of customers and contribute to various communities.

Over time, if you challenge yourself to think about a lot of different companies, you develop pattern recognition, it’s helpful to understand the needs of a business having looked at a large number of startups.

ROMANIAN IMMIGRANT IN IN ACTION ACTION

My name is Aura Imbarus. I have lived in Rancho Palos Verdes for 20 years, and I am running to represent you on the PVP USD School Board. I was born and raised in Transylvania, Romania, in a mixed background family (Romanian, Greek, Hungarian and German), exposed to several religions (Greek-Orthodox, Catholic and Lutheran) and several educational institutions, methods and curriculums. I hold a BA in Foreign Languages, an MA in American and British Studies, and a PhD in World Humanities. In 1997, I was one of 55,000 Green Card recipients out of a pool of 12 million because of the Diversity Visa, a program signed into law by President George Bush, titled The Immigration Act of 1990. My desire to serve Palos Verdes Peninsula on its school board is rooted in two lifelong passions: teaching and serving our teens, the future of this country. N.G: Do you consider yourself a born artist or do you consider that this talent develops throughout life? A.P: This is an interesting and quite delicate question. Although I have studies in the field, I still consider myself more of an innate artist than an educated one. Without diminishing the role of studies in the field of art, my conviction is that any true artist or creator is born with this ability, with an individual vision and perception of things special and deep, which is perfected throughout one’s life.Seeing things in the world is different from feeling it. Painting a work and living it are different things too, but easily noticed by art admirers. Socrates said, „Every man resembles everyone, resembles some and does not resemble anyone.” In the case of an artist I would reverse this order, because, in my opinion, the special and unique things come from within, namely they make us not resemble anyone.

From her I inherited a love for everything that is beautiful, refined and new, as well as an attraction for change and renovation. N.G: Do you think that America helped you to realize your projects for clothing design, painting and other artistic activities more than if you would have stayed in Moldova? A.P: The reason I left Moldova, by far, wasn’t the impossibility to achieve there. I believe I have succeeded a lot, and my works have gained recognition in both national and international competitions.I try never to work via template, or according to rules and standards. Maybe for these reasons, I was requested and appreciated in Moldova, yet also here. My intention is to promote beauty through everything I do and think, because as Dostoevsky said, „Beauty will save the world.”If I refer to clothing design, I must emphasize that Colorado is not yet considered a state well known for fashion, especially Boulder, where I live. This is confirmed by the fact that Denver is only in its 3rd year of organizing and conducting a „Fashion Week”, but the Denver fashion community is very ambitious and rising to the challenge.

For what I am now, I owe most of it to my parents. I have certainly taken, overall, the artistic abilities and inclinations from both my parents. Both were creative, perfectionists, with extraordinary ideas and innate drawing skills. My father was a very good and inventive engineer. From him I inherited the sense of inventiveness as well as an analytical, abstract and unpatterned way of thinking. My mother successfully practiced tailoring, a passion shared and learned from her grandfather who was a tailor of the village of Tira.

I BELIEVE THAT MY WORKS IN FISH BONES ARE A SYMBOL OF CHANGE, REFORMATION, REVALUATION; A SYMBOL OF THE METAMORPHOSIS OF IDEAS AND FORMS. ANY WORK MADE OF FISH BONES GIVES FISH A NEW LIFE IN A DIFFERENT WAY.

Most of my work is the result of improvisations and that explains exactly my unpredictable way of being. In addition, I don’t like to repeat myself, which is why I don’t like copying or multiplying my works, whether it’s interior design, clothing or fine arts. I believe that the art mediums I have chosen are already programmed to be unique. As much as you would like to repeat an image in encaustic art, it will never look the same. A.P: I don’t have a traditional answer that lists specific people or things that inspire me. But, I know I am interested in all that is new, unknown and undiscovered. The truth is that I live with a constant need to create and perfect, no matter what and how, when and where, in what environment, or domain. What I feel is an impulse that comes from within, that is influenced or even dictated by certain greater-or-lesser challenges: internal or external, conscious or subconscious.

fish bones. Even when they are specific bones from the same type of fish they will not look exactly the same, nor will the curves created from them be the same. In addition, my ambition and intention in fish bone work is to use the bones in their natural forms with minimal adjustments, which makes the creative process more difficult. N.G: You are passionate about creations made of fish bones. How did you come to this style and how appreciated are these A.P: The creations made of fish bones are like

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been attracted to everything new and unusual, to „something else.” As an artist and designer, working in many different domains including encaustic, textile design and more, I felt the challenge for an absolutely new, distinct and unique expression. It all started in 1994 with a brooch I made of the fish bones left over from a dinner with my sisters. It unexpectedly, impressed my friends and acquaintances, and served as an impulse to go further.

Then I remembered my impressions and the emotional impact in 1984, as a high school student, visiting the Hermitage of St. Petersburg where among the crowd of old masters were exhibited the totally unusual works of art of a Russian artist. They were made using various cottons placed masterfully on black velvet, creating landscape images, portraits, etc. I was very impressed by his imagination, talent and extraordinary way of expressing his own artistic impulses. It is how I found myself in this new, original and unique form of mixed media: fish bones and velvet, different from any found in existing arts. It arouses more and more curiosity, attracts the attention of different people who find it „impossible and incredible”. The likes of which they have “never seen before” and “surprises with the degree of imagination in each work”. I must admit that imagination in this type of domain plays the key role, for without it, the work would not be possible. N.G: How did you integrate into the American artist community and what differences did you notice compared to those in Moldova? A.P: Art has its universal language and those who possess it do not encounter barriers in communication and collaboration. When you have something to say, you make yourself heard. If you have something new or unique to offer the world, you get noticed and in that case the integration is not problematic. But notwithstanding this, I would like to thank the NoBo Art District, Boulder Office of Arts and Culture, Boulder County Arts Alliance, Dairy Arts Center and other local organizations for their guidance and support which helped me get acquainted with all aspects and peculiarities of the local and national artistic sphere in America. N.G: How did you overcome the transition to American life and style? What struck you most when you moved to the United States? A.P: When you really want to do something, to leave a deep mark behind you, you do it regardless of place, circumstances and age. I am deeply convinced that we are never too old to set another goal or dream of a new dream; and no matter where we are, our dreams are valid. Being a person focused on details, I have to say that quite a few things caught my attention here, but the most striking thing which is observed in America right upon arrival, is the gigantism and immensity of this country; its power, sense of protection and freedom of expression.

I AM DEEPLY CONVINCED THAT WE ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO SET ANOTHER GOAL OR DREAM OF A NEW DREAM; AND NO MATTER WHERE WE ARE, OUR DREAMS ARE VALID.

Lisa Kennedy Montgomery: I grew up in a

loud, very funny house where you had to compete to be heard. I worked at MTV, where the visual component and the aesthetic was very important and satisfying, because it was layered with music and meaning. Just as music was the common language at MTV, news is the common language here. But we consume it in a way that’s much more comfortable, in a language that we understand. It’s the kind of conversation that you have with your friends when you’re having a great dinner. When you’re out at a restaurant with

Everyone’s been there, and it was a horrible position to be in. My husband was like, „You need to figure out what you’re most passionate about and don’t worry about the money. Let go of that employment anxiety. The work will come.” He was absolutely right. He was the one who believed in me.

Sasha Meret was born in Romania in 1955, where he studied art from an early age and obtained both his B.A. and M.A. He arrived in New York in 1987 and studied printmaking at Columbia University, setting up his studio in Tribeca. He currently lives and works in NYC and has exhibits in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. Meret’s recent work applies a wide range of techniques that interact with genres such as fashion, science, essay and film.

For Meret, the lack of sleep doesn’t bother him since it lets him work at what he loves best—creating art. Meret’s obsession with art isn’t new. He’s been at it since he was a child in Bucharest, Romania, he experimented with different kinds of art, mostly drawings with pencils and when he could find them, markers and watercolor. The majority of these immigrants particularly those from Transylvania and Banat that were under AustroHungarian rule left their native regions because of economic depression and forced assimilation, a policy practiced by Hungarian rulers. They settled mostly in the industrial centers in Pennsylvania and Delaware as well as in areas around the Great Lakes such as Cleveland, Chicago, and Detroit. The migrants from the Romanian Old Kingdom were mostly Jews, most of whom settled in New York.

ROMANIAN STATISTICS

According to the 2017 American Community Survey, 478,278 Americans indicated Romanian as their first or second ancestry. Other sources provide higher estimates for the numbers of Romanian Americans in the contemporary US; for example, the Romanian-American Network Inc. supplies a rough estimate of 1.2 million who are fully or partially of Romanian ethnicity. 42 | AROH • 0202 | TCO TPES

There is also a significant number of persons of Romanian Jewish ancestry, estimated at about 225,000. The first Romanian known to have been to what is now the United States was Samuel Damian (also spelled Domien), a former priest. Samuel Damian's name appears as far back as 1748, when he placed an advertisement in the South Carolina Gazette announcing the electrical demonstrations he planned to give and inviting the public to attend. Letters written in 1753 and 1755 by Benjamin Franklin attest to the fact that the two had met and had carried on discussions concerning electricity. Damian remained in the States some years living in South Carolina, then travelled on to Jamaica.

One of their prominent organizations was the United Rumanian Jews of America. 75,000 Romanian Jews emigrated in the period 1881–1914, mostly to the United States. The states with the largest estimated Romanian American populations are: New York (161,900), California (128,133), Florida (121,015), Michigan (119,624), Pennsylvania (114,529), Illinois (106,017), Delaware (84,958), Ohio (83,228), Georgia (47,689). After the Second World War, the number of Romanians who migrated to the United States increased again. This time, they settled mostly in California, Florida and New York and they came from throughout Romania. After the Romanian Revolution, increased numbers of Romanians came to the US, taking advantage of the new relaxation of Romania's emigration policies (during the communist rule, the borders were officially closed, although some people managed to migrate, including to the US). In the 1990s, New York and Los Angeles were favorite destinations for Romanian emigrants to the US. Embassy of Romania in Washington DC.

Oregon star Sabrina Ionescu became the first player to reach 2,000 points, 1,000 assists and 1,000 rebounds in NCAA Division I basketball history. She is the only member of one of the most exclusive clubs in college basketball. No other player in NCAA women's basketball history has 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists in a career — until now. She was awarded the USBWA National Freshman of the Year as the top freshman in the nation.

basketball at the City College of San Francisco before transferring to Oregon; he was solely a student in the 2018–19 school year[6] before walking on to the Ducks men's basketball team in 2019–20. In a 2019 interview with Ava Wallace of The Washington Post, Ionescu admitted to being a "natural scorer", but said that most of the rest of her skill set came from playing alongside both boys and older girls in her childhood:

Sabrina Ionescu was born in Walnut Creek, California to Romanian-American parents. Her father, Dan Ionescu, fled Communist Romania around the time of the 1989 revolution, seeking political asylum in the United States. He hoped that his then-wife, Liliana Blaj, and their son Andrei could join them in a few months, but they were unable to move to the US until 1995. By that time, Dan owned a limousine service in Northern California, where he had chosen to settle because he had several extended family members in that area.

"When I was younger, I was always playing with the guys, and I had to find ways to get the ball, because they never wanted to pass to me. So I figured that if I could rebound, I would be able to get the ball myself. Then passing-wise, when I was in sixth grade playing with the eighth-grade team, I was obviously a lot shorter, skinnier, smaller than they were. I would just have to find ways to impact the game other than shooting or scoring, and that was passing.

Sabrina was around three years old when she first picked up a basketball. She has a twin brother Edward ("Eddy"), who was born 18 minutes after her. Eddy played

Ionescu attended a middle school that did not have enough players to field a girls' team, and her school refused to allow her to play on the boys' team.

She recalled, "My middle school said I should be playing with dolls. Seriously, word-forword." She responded by recruiting enough girls to enable her school to have a team. "I started to play basketball at the age of 3, though I was just throwing the ball around. I gained a lot of experience playing on my brothers' 10-foot hoop. I used my older brother as inspiration to keep improving. Playing him was not always easy, but I do improve because he's harder to play. ... My family has always been there for inspiration to keep pushing and one day become a WNBA player." Playing basketball with her older brother, Andrei, and her twin brother, Eddy, had taught her the joy of clawing for every rebound, every point. Small and stubborn, she willed her game to improve. As the years passed, the game respected her wishes. “We're built-in best friends.

Being able to grow up, have the same friends, play the same sports and do everything together is really fun. We were always so competitive, and I think it's 'cause we were the same age. Everything was fair game”. Liliana Blaj calls her daughter "the hardest self-critic. It motivates her to go back and practice more from learning from her mistakes.” Her father, Dan, remembers that in middle school, they had no girls team to speak of, but they had a boys team. So Sabrina always kept her shoes with her when we went to Eddy's games. “One day when we were short — I think we only had four guys warming up — I asked my coach if it was all right to have my sister play with us. At first he was a little skeptical. She absolutely killed it that game. If we ever needed a player, I would just look at Sabrina”, explains her twin brother, Eddy. SABRINA IONESCU, CHAMPION

OREGON

Sabrina gets her first collegiate tripledouble just seven games into her Oregon career, in a 91-62 victory over San Jose State. It's Oregon's first triple-double since 1988. “I knew I was doing a little bit of everything, but there were no stats up on the scoreboard. I just walked into the locker room and knew we won”. After two years at the City College of San Francisco, Eddy transfers to Oregon, and he and Sabrina become roommates. Heading into her junior season, Sabrina has 10 triple-doubles in her career. With the eight she'll add in her third year in college, she will become the NCAA leader in triple-doubles.Deep down, fear isn't what causes Ionescu's nervousness. No. She's not afraid of anyone, anything. Except for maybe one thing: not living up to the expectations she set for herself, for her team. That is why she tosses in her bed, eyes open, mind wild. What Ionescu sees is everything. Weird things. Cool things. Different things. She watches the ball when she shoots, which is untraditional. Players are usually taught to stare at the back of the rim, but Ionescu taught herself to shoot. She knows when a teammate will miss and where the ball will come off. She knows how to time a pass so her teammate can catch and shoot without needing a step to gather. Ionescu wasn't always comfortable in a leadership role. She had to earn the right. It didn't take long, though.

MY STORY IN BOOKS

WE DON’T WRITE BETTER ENGLISH. WE JUST WRITE SLOW AND BREATHLESS ENGLISH NEW ORLEANS NEW YORK ANDREI CODRESCU

Andrei Codrescu is the winner of the Peabody Award for his film Road Scholar and the Ovid Prize for poetry. He was Mac Curdy Distinguished Professor of English at Louisiana State University from 1984 until his retirement in 2009. A refugee born in Transylvania, found his home in a place where vampires roam the streets and voodoo queens live around the corner; where cemeteries are the most popular picnic spots, the ghosts of poets, prostitutes, and pirates are palpable, and in the French Quarter, no one ever sleeps.

here in America. My first poetry book, License

I was born in Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania, where in the 16th century they burned witches, in 1989 they shot students, and now citizens don’t flinch when Europe’s second biggest theatre festival sets off fireworks at midnight. I emigrated to Detroit in 1966 where a revolution was in progress. Tanks of the 82nd airborne and National Guard shot at me for sticking my head out the window after the 6pm curfew. To avoid gunfire and meet poets, I moved to New York City in 1966. I didn’t speak English, which made it easy to communicate with natives using sign language. When I came to America I went to the New York School of Poetry, where they taught me how to look at things like toasters. Where I was from in Romania we were poor and didn’t have the material things we do

to Carry a Gun, won the 1970 Big Table Poetry award, to the chagrin of my contemporaries who were great but, unfortunately, fluent. Later I moved to San Francisco in 1970, and lived on the West Coast for seven years, four of those in Monte Rio, a Sonoma County town on the Russian River. I also lived in Baltimore (teaching at Johns Hopkins University), New Orleans and Baton Rouge, publishing a book every year. During this time I wrote poetry, stories, essays and reviews for many the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, Harper's, and the Paris Review. I had regular columns in The Baltimore Sun, the City Paper, Architecture, Funny Times, Gambit Weekly, and Neon. In 1983, I founded Exquisite Corpse: a Journal of Books & Ideas, taught literature and poetry at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Baltimore, and Louisiana State University (as MacCurdy Distinguished Professor of English). I read fiendishly and used my vulgate and indo-european substratum to keep language from wasting away in the swamp of politcopsycho-bureaucratic trash. Since 1983, I’ve been a regular commentator on NPR's

All Things Considered, because you can’t live on fighting kitsch every minute. I received a Peabody Award for writing and staring in the film Road Scholar, which started out cute but ended up making people cry. In 1989, I returned to my native Romania to cover the fall of the Ceausescu regime for NPR and ABC News, and wrote The Hole in the Flag: an Exile's Story of Return and Revolution. After this return, I reconnected with Romania’s majestic poetry, and started to write again in my third language (German and Hungarian, respectively the first and second). The result was a separate body of work in Romanian: poetry, essay, collaborations, criticism. English is still my primary language: the site of my books of poetry, novels, essays. My work, correspondence, notebooks, art works, and sundry documents are at the LSU Hill Memorial Library, the University of Illinois/ Champaign-Urbana’s Slavic Library, the New Orleans Historical Collection, the University of Iowa’s collection of Twentieth-Century Avantgarde Art, and in a shed in the Ozarks. These repositories are filled with enough weirdness to keep one hundred grad students wearing out their keyboards.
