Clarification and Apologies to Lynx FC

In issue 11 of CoreSportGib, in our brief news section we inaccurately wrote that Lynx were being investigated over an incident in which a mother had jumped onto the field of play during a youth match to confront officials.

We would like to apologize to Lynx and their fans as the person in question was NOT associated or involved with the Lynx Football club in any way, and had no relationship with the club. Lynx supporters were in no way involved in any incident during the match in question.

Although an incident did take place at the said youth match in which Lynx were playing, the female in question has no links to the club, and we would therefore like to extend our apologies to the club for any inconvenience caused to both club and supporters for the error in linking the club to the incident.

EVA F

welco welc

ormer Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro has made a return home, it seems. In an announcement made by Specialist Medical Clinic on Wednesday afternoon on their Facebook page they posted:

"Gibraltarian Sports

A

ome home Physician Doctor, Eva Carneiro (formerly of Chelsea Football Club, Olympic Medical Institute, and England's Women Football) will be working at the Specialist Medical clinic on Thursday 31st March." Contacted by CoreSportGib a spokesperson for the clinic confirmed that Eva will be working from the clinic but had asked not to speak to the media. She is expected to start work this

Thursday.

Just hours after the announcement Eva made her first public appearance in Gibraltar, appropriately at the Gibraltar versus Latvia international friendly at the Victoria Stadium where she was among the many VIP's attending the match. Eva sat just two seats away from the Chief Secretary of the GFA Dennis Beiso with her family alongside.

31.03.2016

Earlier on Easter Sunday she attended one of the national squad training sessions where she spoke to coaches and staff whilst the players trained.

Although a spokesperson for the Gibraltar Football Association, when asked after the Latvia match if Mrs Carniero was to become a consultant for the GFA officially stated that he was "not aware of any such thing happening," and added that merely because she was a VIP should not be interpreted as meaning anything. CoreSportGib, nevertheless, understands that unofficial approaches have been made to Mrs Eva Carneiro to assist in the development of the medical side of the national team, an offer which close

sources indicated at the time, prior to her wedding, she had neither rejected nor accepted.

Mrs Carneiro took some time away from the public focus just pre-Christmas as she got married in London to polar explorer Jason De Carteret.

Although there has been some expectation that she might have applied for the Chief Medical Consultants position within the GFA when the vacancy was opened to the public late last year, sources close to the GFA had already indicated that she was not expected to apply partly due to her personal circumstances following her departure from Chelsea and the fact even GFA officials understood that the re-

numeration offered would have been below the pay scale expected to be offered to a professional with her international experience and calibre.

Eva has nevertheless had close relations with Gibraltar Football and is known to have attended other national team gatherings in the past, although her presence was kept away from the public eye.

Her presence on Sunday at the National team training session was kept away from the public eye even though it would have increased the expected publicity around the match. The 42-year-old Gibraltarian doctor was dropped in a highly publicised manner from

first-team duties at Premiership club Chelsea after then manager Jose Mourinho criticised her publicly for treating Eden Hazard on the opening day of the season. She has since been the focus of the UK and international media. Eva has received high praise in Gibraltar as she continues to be supported by locals who have admired her achievements in reaching high levels in her career as a sports doctor. Social media posts highlighting the continued support that exists.

It is hoped that her return to Gibraltar will become more permanent with even Government officials having in recent months indicated that Gibraltarians with the vast experience gained, such as that gained by Eva,

CoreSportGib

Football are encouraged to return to Gibraltar where they can make use of their experience to develop areas within Gibraltar's own sporting arena. Since her departure from Chelsea Eva has returned to Gibraltar where her family still lives. Her visits going without much publicity. It is expected that the latest announcements sees a more permanent move which might lead to local sports, and in particular football, being able to tap into her wealth of experience as it continues to develop its structures into the future. Welcome back home EVA, you are much needed.

Futsal Latest

The Scottish Futsal Association has this week announced that they will be hosting two matches against Gibraltar on the 27th and 28th April in Scotland.

There has as yet not been any confirmation from the Gibraltar Football Association as to the announcement, although it is expected to be confirmed within the coming days.

The announcement was featured in Scottish Futsal twitter on the 28th March,

just day after it is believed to have been agreed with Gibraltar Futsal for the match to take place.

Gibraltar is also expected to

play in another international against Andorra, although no further details are as yet known. Futsal officials have confirmed that arrangements are being made for both internationals with a prospect of providing the futsal national squad and Under 21s more international experience.

The match against Andorra, if it were to be confirmed, would allow Gibraltar Futsal to also see how Andorra has created its futsal academy which develop players from grassroots level, something which is seen as a possibility for the future in Gibraltar as plans are underway to create the structures to involve younger players in the game.

Football

T

he Gibraltar FA was delighted to announce a five year partnership with the Welsh Football Trust which will allow Gibraltarian Coaches to train and be assessed in Gibraltar, up to UEFA B level. A spokesman said, "The details of the agreement are as follows:

"The agreement spans a total of five years and follow's Gibraltar's admission as a signatory to the UEFA Coaching Convention at the B level in 2015. As a result of joining the Convention, the Football Association of Wales (FAW), through the Welsh Football Trust and under the auspices of UEFA, has offered to assist the GFA with its coach education requirements,

and in particular in the context of the GFA's efforts to set up its own independent coach education structure.

"The agreement will allow the WFT to train tutors in Gibraltar in order to create a pool of coaches who can deliver future FAW Level 1, FAW Level 2 and UEFA B courses in Gibraltar, meaning that in the near future Gibraltarian

candidates will no longer have to travel abroad to undertake courses at these levels - they will be able to carry them out in Gibraltar.

The Gibraltar Women's selection were involved in two friendly matches during the easter weekend as part of their on going development plans.

The selection came back with two consecutive victories under their belts, the first official wins for the women. Gibraltar women’s football

selection on Good Friday came out convincing winners against San Bernardo in Castellar, in a friendly 11 a-side match. The Gibraltar team, who only get 9 a-side league experience in Gibraltar, and who haven’t played a league match for over a month, won 17-0.

The very next day the young ladies travelled to Spain again to play CD Guardiaro where they were met by a tougher opposition

than the previous day. Gibraltar, who had already played Guardiaro, several months ago and lost 5-1, expected from the start to face a tough battle against the Spanish side.

The young ladies, nevertheless, took the lead from the start. Having gone two nil ahead in the first half through goals from Shania

The young keeper had made several good saves in the first part of the match to keep Gibraltar in the game and came from having kept a clean sheet the previous days, Gibraltar's first. Guardiaro then scored a second when Revagliatte was able to parry the ball but the rebound was reached first by the home side to score their second. Gibraltar’s third and winning goal came from a counter attack in which Sherilyn Orfila scored putting the match at 3-2 for Gibraltar. Speaking after the match Stacey Rowbottom said "it wasn't such an easy match as we won 3-2 so the margin says it all, but we

are starting to pass the ball between us very well and a few of the newer younger players are making improvements in leaps and bounds, the older more experienced ones are there to guide them as best we can."

Kyrelle Revagliette, who once again played in goal commented “we all played really well and distributed the ball amazingly , were improving and its showing and were all really happy and proud of the result against a team who are stronger than us.”

Gibraltar women’s success in Spain has highlighted the teams development in recent months the latest friendly matches providing the younger players with added experience.

Rock IX defeated by San Roque

A Rock XI selection, chosen from the 31 man squad announced for the national team, have been defeated by CD San Roque 3-1, in San Roque this Saturday. The Gibraltar selection took the lead, only to see San Roque come back and take the game in the San Roque anniversary friendly match.

The score for Gibraltar was opened by Anthony Hernandez in the 19th minute. It took only a few

minutes before San Roque equalised and took the lead. A shot/cross from De Jorge Junco surprised the Rock IX keeper for the equaliser. This was followed a few minutes later by a goal from Augustin for the 2-1.

San Roque scored their third and final goal before half time through a header on the 39th minute by Chieto.

The match was described by San Roque officials to have been played under a good friendly atmosphere. Gibraltar's first choice team, who weren't involved in tonight's match, will now play against Latvia in a full international on Tuesday where it is hope Gibraltar's national team will fare better having already drawn against higher ranked Liechtenstein earlier in the week.

Still work to be done as Gib loses heavily

CoreSportGib

Football

31.03.2016

Earlier in the afternoon The Gibraltar FA had announced a partnership with the Welsh FA bringing Gibraltar up to speed with coaching certificates and courses.

Among the one things mentioned was a goalkeeping coaching course which was described as "much needed." Yet this was the one area on the field that had no real need for

change.

Goalkeeper Jordan Perez once again became the hero with some magnificent saves in the second half that kept the score at 5-0, the score could have been higher. Yet it was not because Gibraltar was not at the same level as Latvia, it was because somewhere between the end of the first half and the start of the second half Gibraltar had

lost its focused, re-entered the match and seen themselves go one - nil down within seconds of the second half kicking off, and suddenly lost its confidence.

Although Latvia dominated most of the possession, in the first half Gibraltar had played a balanced, well disciplined game for most of the first half. Gibraltar's forwards proved once again

that they were there to cause problems. Both Cabreras and Casciaro, along with Liam Walker in the midfield pushed Latvia into a defensive posture as they threatened in attack. With Latvia having a couple of good chances, but nothing to what was to be seen in the second half.

Gibraltar came out a changed side. The deep runs were just not repeating

CoreSportGib

Football

31.03.2016

themselves, the midfield seemed static in its approach and the front runners just were not getting the balls anymore. There was a disjointed approach to the game in which Latvia were pulling Gibraltar apart in the flanks and trampling over them as they criss-crossed, changing widths to strike.

Gibraltar's problems seemed to have started in

the first half when from the touchline players could be heard arguing amongst each other. The Defence argued with the front line, the midfield with the defence. Teams shout among each other in normal day to day football, it is quite common place, but the tones and the responses were to the uninitiated of a team not communicating among each other with the clarity

that they had in the first match.

Latvia was proving to be a stern opponent from the first half. In the second half, with a solid defence Latvia was an impenetrable opponent, lethal in attack as they put away five at the back of the net and saw just as many saved by goal keeper Jordan Perez. The disunity in the Gibraltar ranks, was also apparent in

the stands where once again the Gibraltar fans, except for a group on the east stand, could hardly be heard. As the match neared its last ten minutes some fans started to depart early. The vociferous support of the past for Gibraltar football seemed to be a thing of the past. Just a handful of supporters could be heard. At times that handful were solely Latvian supporters whose 30 odd

CoreSportGib

Football

31.03.2016

strong supporters group out-did the west stands. Few voices, cheers, or chants could be heard coming from the west stand. A shameful sight in which those watching were literally spectators rather than supporters. A factor which forgets the importance of home matches, where the extra player is always the support for the home team.

Gibraltar had come home, but it seems it had been away for far too long. The defeat against Latvia was not all negatives.

Gibraltar proved in the first half that it has a solid foundation from which to build on. Gibraltar's attacks down the wing proved to be effective and caused enough danger to push Latvia back and take Gibraltar seriously.

Cabreras and Casciaro once again showed that they had what it takes to combat in the front line head to head international defenders. Liam Walker once again showed he continues to have the mindset to play against any side in midfield and still take control when he has to.

Gibraltar's defence also proved solid for the first 45 minutes. Where defenders

might have found the pace too fast at times, Jordan Perez was there to respond with his own heroics.

From the subs bench, Montovio, Guiling and Olivero once again showed that there is more than just one club that can supply talent into the squad. Payas has already shown strong character alongside Chipolina, whilst Bosio, Sergeant, Barnett and

CoreSportGib

Football

31.03.2016

Bardon had shown why they had been included in the team line-ups during the two latest friendly matches. Gibraltar had been unfortunate in not seeing an appearance at home of the likes of Goldwyn who had sustained an injury earlier on in the week during training, Torilla and Power but who had been involved in the 31 man squad structure increasing the pressure on established

internationals to maintain a higher level to keep their positions.

Gibraltar is not used to the prolonged international weekends experienced this Easter. A time when players take a back step to enjoy a break with families saw a 31 man squad put through their paces instead and placed under the spot light. Thrown straight into the Euro qualifiers after joining

UEFA, Gibraltar is now building for the future with three two years to build upon the foundations which started the journey, even though part of the journey has included fans having to learn how to live with defeats.

San Roque receives no fine yet

Football

Reports emerged earlier this week through Spanish media Europa Sur that the San Roque football club could be facing between 7,000 to 20,000 euros fine from the Spanish football federation for playing against a Rock XI side.

Although initial official football sources in Gibraltar had indicated that the fine had already been imposed CoreSportGib understands that there has been no fine imposed on the club and no indication, other than media reports of this being the case as of yet.

The San Roque versus Rock XI match was a commemorative match as part of their 50th Anniversary Celebrations and was played as a select Rock XI, featuring players who would not be playing in the two friendly internationals held this past week. The match was used as part of the overall training towards testing out new players and providing new opportunities whilst allowing the players to be integrated into a national team squad structure during a ten day period.

Scorpions B make it to semi finals in Futsal Rock Cup

CoreSportGib

Futsal

31.03.2016

Saturday saw the quarter finals of the Futsal Rock Cup played out at the Tercentenary Sports Hall with few surprises as the four teams expected to get through to the semi-finals won their matches.

Scorpions B are the only surviving side from the lower divisions beating third division Hercules 5-1.

Scorpions had a difficult

task at first but soon found the net to take the lead and entered the second half with a 3-0 lead. Hercules seemed unable to put the ball in the back of the net, with Scorpions tight defence keeping them out. League leaders Lynx had an easier task against second division Maccabi Alef putting 6 past them to reach the semi-finals.

first division side Pheonix and College 1974 saw fifth placed Pheonix 5-0 up before the second half. Pheonix went on to score two further goals as College 1975 pulled four back in the second half.

The best of the quarter finals was played out between second division

high flyers Gunwharf and Glacis United. Gunwharf, who had recently added to their ranks former national team player Daniel Duarte provided stern opposite to Glacis, although the latter's pace and stamina played a key role in ensuring they won comfortably in the end.

CoreSportGib

Futsal

Second division Scorpions B remain the only side outside the first division playing in the Rock Cup after beating third division Hercules in the quarter finals.

Scorpions B took the lead early on in the match as Hercules slowed down the pace with a focus on passing to open spaces and keeping possession. This was soon followed by

the second and third goal, the scoreline by half time gave the impression Hercules were an easy opponent, which was far from the reality.

Although many a time playing on the back foot Hercules were unlucky not to score in the first half as they saw the ball strike the post and cross bar on several occasions.

Hercule's luck in front of goal continue through into the second half as they saw Scorpions defence keep them out with block after block, and then saw several key saves made by the Scorpions keeper. Once again the post came into play to keep Hercules out. As Hercules thought the ball was not going to go in their consolation goal came to put the score at 3-1. This prompted Scorpions B to

increase their pressure and soon put the game well out of reach at 5-1. Hercules players head could be seen sinking as the two final goals went in, just when they had thought they had broken through.

Scorpions B will not be meeting one of three first division sides hoping to make it to the Rock Cup final.

Futsal X-Plode(s)

CoreSportGib

Futsal

31.03.2016

Easter Sunday saw the Tercentenary Sports Hall full of action in the newly created GFA Futsal X-plode Trophy Tournament.

Two categories were played out, Seniors and Under 21, with teams from both the leagues and those just wanting to take part, but not registered players wanting to take part, competing on the same pitch.

The tournament saw some exciting matches, with some surprises as teams such as Last Place reached the semi-finals, and Titans (Third Division league side) reach the finals of the seniors.

The Under 21 finals was played out between Maccabi Benchwarmers and Rock 54, the under 21 development selection that currently plays in the lower

divisions. Maccabi were eventual winners in an exciting match in which the non-stop clock played a key role as Rock 54 were only able to draw after the final buzzer, even though they had the most chances in front of goal. A penalty shoot-out decided the winners, with Maccabi goalkeeper becoming the hero as he saved a penalty kick. The senior tournament saw

an unexpected finalist in Titans who knocked out Scorpions, currently in the top four in the first division. Scorpions, who had knocked out St Joseph's had started well and were expected to win with ease. However, Titans frustrated the make-shift Scorpions side who did not have all of its main players present. Titans came out eventual 32 winners in the semi-finals and went on to meet

CoreSportGib

Futsal

31.03.2016

Pheonix.

The Third Division side played the final immediately after their own semi-final, with Pheonix having the advantage of having had a longer break between matches.

The faster paced Pheonix, with futsal league top scorer Ledesma among their ranks took the final with ease winning 8-1 against a valiant Titans.

Following the tournament GFA Futsal Chairman Micheal Bonavia was quick to praise everyone who had attended the tournament and thanked referees Antonio, Manolo, Daniel and Abdul for giving up their free time to referee all matchesand sponsors 'Close to Home' for

sponsoring the event. Mr Bonavia also had a special thanks for organiser Karl Zarb whom he said "without him this tournament would never have happened. We have to praise what he has done and the work he has put in to make it happen."

Titans made it to final

Futsal

31.03.2016

If you had written the script before the X-Plode Tournament started you would be forgiven for excluding third division Titans from the final.

However, in a dramatic turn, Titans came out on top in the semi-finals against a Scorpions side that had just beaten St Joseph's to reach the semis. Scorpions, without some of

their keys players, underperformed at the most crucial time, with a disjointed team firing well below their expectations as Titans took advantage to win 3-2.

Titans went on to meet Pheonix in the final, just minutes after completing their semi-final round against Scorpions, forcing the third division team to have to find that extra

CoreSportGib

Futsal

battery charge to take on another first division high flyer.

Pheonix opened the score only to see Titans make a comeback and score the equaliser. The Titans reaction, and their pressure up front forced Pheonix to up their pace. With the first division top scorer Ledesma among their rank Pheonix started to play a much faster paced futsal than Titans are normally accustomed to.

Ledesma's presence caused problems for the third division side who had to cover at the back all the time with two players. Four - one up in the first half the second half was one way traffic as Pheonix continuously used their quick counter style, and Ledesma's presence to good effect.

The third division team, although performing valiantly were beaten 7-1.

The Under 21 X-Plode Futsal tournament saw probably two of the best developing under 21 players on the pitch as Maccabi Benchwarmers and Rock 54 reached the finals.

The latter, known to be the under 21 Gibraltar development squad, found themselves behind in the first half as Maccabi struck in style, with a clean strike at goal catching the young Rock 54 side out.

Maccabi covered well at the back to keep Rock 54 away from goal. The latter played in a more aggressive style with determination but were thwarted time and again by Maccabi's simple basic play which saw them defending as a unit and using their quick pace to take the ball into the opponents half whenever they had the chance.

The Maccabi goalkeeper was among one of the key players keeping them in the

CoreSportGib

Futsal

game as he came out with four consecutive saves to the frustrations of Rock 54.

As the second half progressed Rock 54 mounted the pressure further forcing more saves from the young keeper who excelled in the final, and was to become the eventual hero in the penalty shoot out.

Rock 54 eventually struck home the equaliser, but were unable to score again, as Maccabi showed they were not in the finals because of a fluke. The match ended in a 1-1 draw forcing both teams to play out a penalty shoot out. Maccabi were to come out eventual winners after their keeper made a crucial save to gift Maccabi with the first Under 21 X-Plode trophy.

Minister for Education Promotes Gibraltar Backgammon Championship in Copenhagen

The Minister for Education, Gilbert Licudi QC, took part in the Nordic Backgammon Open held over the Easter weekend in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Nordic Open is one of the most prestigious backgammon competitions in Europe with

many of the world’s best players competing. Whilst in Copenhagen, Minister Licudi took the opportunity of promoting the Second Gibraltar Backgammon Championship which is due to be held at the Caleta

Hotel in February 2017.

Minister Licudi said: “It is clear from the comments by many players that the First Gibraltar Backgammon Championship held last February has had a real impact in the international backgammon community. Almost everyone was talking about it. Those that had come to Gibraltar commented on what a good competition it had been. Others said that they had heard excellent reviews on the Gibraltar Championship and that they would certainly be coming to Gibraltar for next year’s championship.

“The level of interest is such that next year’s competition will certainly build on the success of the championship held last

February. “The combination of the Caleta Hotel, with the already very successful Chess Festival, and Steen Grønbech, the tournament director for both the Gibraltar Championship and the Nordic Open, is a recipe for success and is sure to attract to Gibraltar numerous top players placing Gibraltar firmly in the map as one of the best backgammon competitions.”

Teddy appointed team captain

Rugby

31.03.2016

GRFU have announce that Edward (Teddy) Sacarello has been appointed as National Team Captain for the forthcoming tour to Malaysia and Singapore.

The locally born 28 year old 1.85m 90kg centre has a strong and distinguished rugby pedigree. He has represented his school (Worth), County (Sussex) and University (Edinburgh)

at the highest levels.

Teddy won his first cap in the 36-10 home win against Cyprus in 2013, where he announced his arrival on the International stage with a resounding 21 point contribution (2 tries, 4 conversions and 1 penalty). He unfortunately suffered a serious knee injury in a league match shortly after, and, combined with work

commitments, has only been able to add one other cap to his tally, the home loss to Malta in March 2015. Teddy has been a key player in the strong revival of Nature Group Stormers in this years' Super IV's.

A spokesperson for the GRFU said "Captaincy is a serious role in Rugby, and Teddy becomes our third International Captain.

Previous holders Chris Lugnani (returning to join the Asia Tour after a 3 year injury absence) and Fred Cruz (study commitments prevent him from joining the Asia tour) have been worthy holders, and we are certain Teddy will be a successful leader, with his quiet but intense personality held in high esteem by his players."
