A

ngels seemed to have sealed their fate with humiliating defeat against Manchester 62 in a second half display that brought back memories of the start of the season.

Already on their second week with their vociferous new coach no where to be seen on the pitch, or stands, and with players claiming they had not trained since before Easter, questions over Angels survival hopes were easy to be raised.

Angels whose mid season changes had threatened to turn the relegation battle on its head, especially with their defeat of St Joseph seemed to seal their fate this Sunday as they came untangled losing 6-1 against relegation battlers Manchester 62.

Manchester 62 found themselves startled at the start of the match, with Angels forwards breaking through the sides. Angels were using recent signing

Football

Cordoba as their playmaker in the centre, and were seen the fruit of his play pay dividends as they forced Manchester 62 back. However, a well disciplined central defensive play, with Payas at its helm kept Angels from having clear goal chances.

As the half progressed Manchester 62 had their own runs at goal, their few moments up front exposing Angels vulnerabilities at the back as Angels seemed to have to scramble the ball from their own penalty area on several occasions.

With Angels still very much in the dominant position at first attacking Manchester's area, the match was turned on its head as the latter opened the score with a last minute goal, right on half

time. However, not before Mateo had to push several good attempts at goal to corner as Angels had threatened to take the lead instead.

The goal seemed to deflate Angels who entered the second half with heads down and soon conceded a second. Angels, nevertheless shook it off and responded resolutely converting a corner into a goal with a clean header in front of goal.

Although having conceded one, Manchester still buoyed by taking the lead pressed forward pushing down the flanks and creating chances as Angel's defence was split apart time and again. Manchester finding the net a further two times to make it 4-1.

Toncheff masterminded the attacks and was rewarded with a beauty as he calmly chipped over Brazilian keeper Filoho when he found himself alone against the keeper on the right. Angels coach, who was clearly seen taking instructions from "club associates" in the stands made some unexpected changes when he substituted their main playmaker Cordoba and then replaced keeper Filoho, even though none of the four goals were his fault.

The last substitution saw the first team keeper walk angrily towards his own bench and recriminate them for substituting him before he finally walked off to the

changing rooms for a while.

An angry Filoho returned to the pitch side and eventually sat on the bench with the rest of the players although he had already publicly voiced his disgust at being substituted.

Manchester 62 continued to press on Angels seeking to increase their lead further.

Quick breaks down the flanks were met with some clever passes through the middle that left Angels defence in disarray as the team seemed unsettled by the changes made. The reds made the best of the open spaces created to score two further goals, for the 6-1 and continue their route away from the relegation play off places.

The sixth goal was a clear case of the keeper's height not being sufficient to reach the ball as the ball was struck from outside the area and flew in over the keepers outstretched arms about an arms length below the crossbar.

The defeat leaves Angels firmly rooted at the foot of the table, without their recent new coach now where to be seen on the bench in the past two matches, and players commenting that the team had not trained together since before the easter break.

Europa clinch the three points in last minutes

Football

T

he Easter break has brought about many changes, among which the absence of new Lynx signing Vidic in the frontline of Lynx was one of the most significant ones which would have an impact on the effectiveness of Lynx upfront.

Lynx who had seemed to have solved one of their keys problems earlier in the season upfront with the inclusion of Vidic once

again saw their front line depleted from having its poacher style forward to grab hold of those crucial chances.

Europa, who started the match eleven points behind Lincoln and needed to win to keep the gap from opening further came into the match with the resolution to find a goal early. However, they too seemed to lack that finishing touch in front of goal that would clinch the match for them.

CoreSportGib

Football

07.04.2016

Kitted out in their unusual white kit Europa were the dominant side throughout the match in terms of the possession of the ball. From the very start of the game they controlled possession pinning Lynx back into their own half through their typical passing game. Lynx seemed content to hold their formation and hold back without allowing space for Europa to find too much space to threaten their goal, and their plan worked throughout most of the match.

Europa were forced to find rare gaps to get into danger areas, weaving passes to and fro, but with little effectiveness in unsettling and threatening Lynx's

penalty area. Europa had few chances of scoring, forcing only one good save from Jamie Robba towards the end of the first half with a strike from outside the area. Other attempts were easily parried or caught by the keeper. Their forays into the area cleared in most instances as Lynx kept a tight hold on the back, shutting down Europa's main method of delivering the ball into danger areas.

Lynx, third in the table before the match started, sought to counter but with their players deep in their half Europa were able to thwart most attempts at attack with ease.

The match continued much the same way in the second half, with little too few

CoreSportGib

chances at goal from either side in what was a dreary run of the mill affair from two teams content in not risking much. Lynx seemed happy to seek a draw, which would have been seen as a loss for Europa who were already 8 points behind Lincoln with a handful of matches left.

As Lynx seemed to have succeeded in their task and with just six minutes to go Europa found the back of the net as Padal put the ball over Jamie Robba, hitting the crossbar and bouncing off the keeper into the back of the net. Although many would have considered it an own goal Padal received the official credit for the goal. Robba was later to make a save from a Joselinho's strike which

kept the score at 1-0.

Lynx's defeat placed them fourth in the table after St Joseph's win later that evening. Europa with just seven matches left continue 8 points behind and praying for an unlikely miracle that Lincoln lose points towards the end of the season.

Europa, who this week launched a book highlighting their 90 year history, and their directors/owners launched a tourism/culture/sports monthly magazine will now be looking at their fate in the Rock Cup for a place in Europe. The "green machine" will be hoping for a final against Lincoln which would guarantee them a place in the Europa League, win or lose, if they maintain their second place position in the league.

Gibraltar United pave their way out of relegation trouble

Football

07.04.2016

The battle to stay away from the relegation play-off spot took a greater significance on Monday as Gibraltar United proved that their earlier win against Lions had not been a fluke.

In a soggy, wet, winding Monday evening Gibraltar United started putting themselves in the lead within the first few minutes of the match.

Gibraltar United, whose team carries only locals was playing Lions, whose

side has been transformed with many foreign inputs among their ranks, many of whom continue to struggle to perform well when the pitch is wet.

Lions saw their Polish keeper Szpilczynski return, a decision which the manager might have regreted after seeing how he mistimed the bounce of the ball in the very first five minutes and saw Robert Montovio score his first of the night. Montovio, a natural poacher had

CoreSportGib

Football

followed the ball and put pressure on the keeper on the bounce, enough to see it bounce low and fast to the side past the keeper, and where he took his chance and scored with ease.

The keeper was to see several other similar mistakes during the match, luckily for Lions without a goal coming from them.

Lions tried to push forward to grab the equaliser but without Gines upfront their options seemed not to exist. A firm defensive, tightknitted display by Gibraltar United was proving effective in keeping them out. As the half progressed Lions were getting more and more frustrated, as their chances at goal were far an between.

It was Gibraltar United who, instead, had the better chances. Montovio, buoyed by his selection to the national squad seemed to have come out to prove his selection. In one such action Montovio stole the ball in midfield then flung a cross into the centre from the left where it was met by a header bouncing off the post for a goal kick, with Szpilczynski once again beaten.

Brad Power and Goldwyn, also returning from international duty were keeping a tight control over their defence and proved to be in command of the game.

Leading 1-0 at half time Gibraltar United were faced

with a Lions team that wanted the points and were pushing everyone forward at the start of the second half. A bombardment of crosses, shots and attempts continued as Gibraltar United kept their tight defence to keep them out. In one of this long ball crosses into the centre Goldwyn came out to meet the ball, but a miscommunication between him and his defence saw the ball bounce straight through both to the feet of Mouheli standing just a metre from the goal line. Brad Powers attempt at clearing as he untangled his feet from the previous mistake was not enough to get to the ball.

Later, after the match Goldwyn apologised for his

mistake taking responsibility for the error. Goldwyn would later be seen to become the hero as he foiled Lions best chance at goal with a superb reflect save on the very goal line which kept Gibraltar United in the game.

Gibraltar United's response to Lions goal was immediate, within a minute of Lions goal Montovio chased a long pass deep into Lions half, out pacing the defender. He struck low with power leaving the outstretched Szpilczynski grasping air.

As the clock ticked away Lions brought on Gines and Gonzalez. Although both made an impact on the match, Gibraltar United had settled into their well

Football

practised roll as a "brick wall" and were practically impenetrable. Frustrations grew within Lions with the vociferous Lions manager once again seen screaming from the sidelines. In one such moment a clash between Montovio and Mouheli saw the manager get involved verbally with Montovio. The Lions manager clearly heard from the stands saying to Montovio "luego hablamos el minuto 47" (Later we speak on the 47th minute). His comments made next to the fourth official who took no action, left fans who had heard the comments perplexed at the inaction.

Gibraltar United sat back, with a nine man defensive blockade that seemed impenetrable. Montovio

who had chased every ball and had seen up to three Lions defenders surround him at any one time was substituted. His two goals already having secured a comfortable lead by Gibraltar United standards which they could defend until the final whistle.

As the fourth official signaled that an additional five minutes injury time had been added Lions went for a direct approach to goal but with little success. Instead they saw Gibraltar United hoofing the ball forward chased by their lone forward. As the ball run loose inside Lions half Perez raced for it, beating Lions defence to the ball and unleashed a powerful driven strike from half way inside Lions half which

CoreSportGib

Football

rocketed into the back of the net bouncing right out. The goal had the handful of spectators on their feet. Gibraltar United held on for the last couple of minutes to win 3-1.

Their victory places them equal in points and goal difference with Glacis and just one point below Britannia XI who continue to struggle. With Glacis United still in good form and taking points from key matches, and with Angels unlikely to take enough point to lift themselves off the bottom of the table, the battle to stay away from the play off place seems destined to go to the wire between Britannia and Gibraltar United.

On Friday Britannia play bottom of the table Angels, whilst on Sunday Glacis play Gibraltar United in what is the battle for survival for all four teams. Both Glacis and Gibraltar United will also play Angels before the season comes to an end where both teams need to get points to secure their first division status if Britannia fail against Angels on Friday.

Officials become protagonists

Football

07.04.2016

R

eferee Jason Barcelo and his linesman Michael Gordillo became the protagonists of the match for all the wrong reasons as Lincoln Red Imps went down to ten men and saw a series of yellow cards which left those watching baffled.

The match could not have come at a worse time for Lincoln. Just a few days since the team came back together after the core of the team had been on

national squad duty, and with Mick McElwee taking over the reign, Lincoln were faced with a resurgent Glacis United.

However, from the very first kick of the ball Lincoln dominated play with three attempts at goal in just the first five minutes. The same time it took referee Jason Barcelo to produce his first two yellow cards to Lincoln players for incidents which left many watching baffled and later led to calls from players for the trigger happy officials to ease off with the

cards.

Within the first 15 minutes Linesman Michael Gordillo also came into play as Lincoln's Cabrera rounded off a defender and struck a low drive to goal for the Glacis keeper Simon to make a magnificent two handed save. The ball going for a corner. However, this was not to be as the officials had other ideas and gave a goal kick.

Lincoln were splitting Glacis defence wide open from the start, leaving them reeling for ball as the flanks were outrun and the keeper found himself having to come out on numerous occasions to cover or block.

The first goal came from Livramento when a cross

from Kyle Casciaro on the left split Glacis open and left Livramento, Walker and Cabreras alone in the box. The former picking the ball up and driving it to the far post for the first.

With Lincoln attacking Cabreras soon found the back of the net after numerous attempts. A cross from the left wing saw him flying to meet the ball in the centre of the penalty box and volley in his first. Cabreras, was on fire in the first half, just as he had been during the internationals, chasing every ball and looking for the ball to goal. In one such chase he picked up the ball outside the penalty box, and rounding off a defender with ease drove the ball low into the back of the net

CoreSportGib

Football

beating keeper, and two defenders at it for his second.

The first half saw another of the dubious refereeing emerge as Glacis players claimed there had been a foul which the referee and linesman had not signalled leaving play to go on. As the ball was driven out of play a Glacis player approached the linesman and complained that there had been an elbow to one of his colleagues. The referee who was in the other half of the field by them came up to the linesman spoke with him and subsequently approached Blasco to show him a direct red, which the player argued with the linesman was incorrect.

Ten man down, Lincoln did not relent and continued attacking, with Glacis showing little signs of taking any advantage.

As the second half started Glacis took advantage of a period in which Lincoln seemed to lose focus and seemed unsettled. Glacis centre forward Sastrie threatened with his pace and caused Roy Chipolina, Casciaro and JC Garcia problems forcing Navas to make two good saves, and striking the crossbar once.

Glacis brought on Lopez whose pace also threatened to unbalance Lincolns defence as the latter settled in to a new tactic leaving Cabreras alone up front. It was not until Mick McElwee made a

CoreSportGib

Football

07.04.2016

change in the middle that Lincoln found their balance again, Lee Cascairo making a return to the field. his presence soon became apparent as he surged forward and then returned to a central midfield holding role in which his fresh legs and battling gave Lincoln a new lease in life. Glacis , even with the one man advantage started to find it difficult to find a path to goal, unlike Lincoln who came up with several good chances to score again.

It was Lee Casciaro once again who became an instant hero as he chased a chipped through ball, beating the keeper to the ball and lobbing into the net for the fourth.

Mick McElwee made a

second big change as he brought off Cabreras who was feeling his tired legs for Abayian, whose presence up front pinned defenders back to control him.

Lincoln made one more change with Payas entering the field for Casciaro (r). Just seconds from entering Lincoln's defence were caught napping as a corner kick wasn’t cleared and the consolation goal for Glacis came.

Abayian was to become the next victim of a dubious yellow card which left those watching stunned. As he went for the ball and halted himself, Simon, the Glacis keeper collected with Abayian still over a metre away. Simon, who himself had described earlier in the

CoreSportGib

Football

07.04.2016

game his defence as a "disjointed bunch of mercenaries, rolled forward and sideways in to the path of Abayian and with his legs up hit the forward making him fall over him. Jason Barcelo was quick to show his 8th card of the night, not to the keeper who seemed to have been the one clashing with Abayian, but to the big forward.

A difficult match to start with for Mick McElwee became a nightmare in strategy which Lincoln won keeping themselves clearly ahead of the pack and seemingly wanting to finalise the decision on who the league champion is early on as they kept their 8pt lead.

Expectation have also increased over Lincoln as

rumours persist that the club is due to announce at the end of the season the signing of a top name as manager.

Speaking on Lincolns Facebook page McElwee, who is not expected to take over the full reigns commented “Raul Procopio's departure took us all by surprise so when I was asked to take over as manager until someone was appointed, I accepted the role for as long as I am needed. I know most of the players and although it was two years ago that I left this position, I think we are all older and wiser so we will just keep winning and we hope to take each game as it comes.

St Joseph give youngsters a chance

Football

07.04.2016

St Joseph's maintained their stance of giving young local talent a run in the first team with both 17 year old Negrette and 16 year old Prescott playing against Britannia.

Britannia without Barnfather, Breakspear and Graham were a depleted force with few ideas and a vulnerable defence that was lucky not to concede more in the first half.

Seventeen year old Negrette made a good start in his first team call up with some darting runs down the

flank which caused problems to the Britannia defence. This was soon to see him followed around by defenders who kept close to him during the first half. St Joseph found it difficult to penetrate deep into Britannia's area to cause too many problems although on several occasions the keeper was forced to come out and clear with his feet as St Joseph broke through the middle.

It was in one of this darting runs through the middle that Morlan got the better of the

CoreSportGib

Football

07.04.2016

keeper toeing the ball just past him as he came out of his area, leaving him alone on goal for the first goal.

Britannia had few chances to make a mark on the match with Perez having an easy first half as he saw wild shots from outside the area go well off target.

The second half started with Britannia trying to get an equaliser. A shot from outside the area easily caught by Perez. A second attempt going wide off the mark.

Negrette who had seemed star struck towards the end of the first half soon made an impression in the second half as he found himself space receiving the ball wide and with a clever quick

pass broke open Britannia's defence for a low cross to be put in for Morlan to push in before the oncoming sliding tackle from a defender.

With St Joseph's 2-0 up young Prescott was brought in for Negrette changing the dynamics of the Saints on the flanks. Prescott was to prove a shrewd tactical move as he searched and chased for the ball and proved to be difficult to chase after. His darting runs breaking Britannia down time and again and adding extra pace into St Joseph's game. Prescott himself having two attempts at goal with well struck drives which forced the keeper into saves.

A change of flanks saw

CoreSportGib

Football

07.04.2016

Prescott shift to the left causing Britannia further disarray as St Joseph took advantage and struck two more before the ninety minutes were up. Verejo scoring on the 63rd and Morlan completing his hattrick with the goal of the match as he struck from outside the area a power drive which left the keeper beaten.

The 4-0 win by St Joseph's places them three points above Lynx on 3rd place with a better goal difference. The match was watched by now more than six people as most spectators, even the most vociferous of St Josephs fans stayed away mainly due to the Spanish el Clasico coinciding with the second half of the match.

Magpies through to Division 2 Cup Final

Football

07.04.2016

Bruno Magpies will be meeting Europa Point in the Second Division cup final after convincing wins by both sides in their semifinals.

Europa Point outclassed Cannon in a match which saw them put ten past the second division mid-table contenders. Cannon failed to come to terms with the match and as the goals rained in were more focused on arguing than playing. In the second semi-final

Bruno Magpies put five past their promotion chasing rivals Gibraltar Phoenix in what turned out to be a very heated encounter between both sides.

Brunos went ahead as the match seemed to be heading for a low scoring encounter, with only two real chances in the first part of the match. A high ball towards goal from the right wing saw the ball dip over the keeper for the first. The second goal came from a cross on the right which was headed to goal but hit

Football

the post instead rebounding behind the Phoenix keeper and falling for Bothen to push in at the far post.

The first half saw the official having to show several yellow cards as the match became entangled in some heated confrontations and harsh tackling.

With the first half finishing 2-0, Phoenix started looking for goals. As time went by the match became more aggressive with several confrontations between players that looked like flaring up towards something more serious. Enough to force the Phoenix coach to enter the pitch and calm his own players down.

As Phoenix seemed more focused on the confrontations and arguments, Brunos Magpies took advantage of a lack of defensive discipline among their opponents. Finding space across both wings Brunos Magpies put the score-line out of Phoenix's reach with three more strikes on goal. Dembele ending up the hero with his semi-final hat-trick.

New Safety nets stop the ball but‌

Football

07.04.2016

Football returned to the small pitches on Saturday with the Junior leagues kicking off the restart of the league following the Easter break under the new rules imposed due to the installation of safety nets over the small pitches.

The nets cover a quarter of the pitch close to the runway, with wires crisscrossing above across the full length of the pitch. The presence of the new nets and wires have forced the league to impose new regulations in which play is

stopped and a throw in given if the ball touches the net or wires.

The new rules has meant that already the women's league has been stalled as officials and teams wanted to see what the actual effects of the netting was on play before deciding whether to proceed to play on the same pitch. A decision has as yet not been made, with coaches on Saturday indicating that the results of the junior matches had shown that the netting would impose

CoreSportGib

Football

restrictions which would be more apparent with senior players after matches in the under 9's had already seen the rules used as balls easily reached the safety netting.

A decision on the women's league will be made within the coming days, with officials indicating that there was a planned test match being organised before a final decision was made. Alternative allocations were also being sought out so that the women's league could continue.

Under 16 squad lose 1-0 to Steyning Town

Football

07.04.2016

The Gibraltar Under 16 national squad, which is preparing to play in a UEFA development Tournament in Cyprus later this month were narrowly defeated by visiting side Steyning Town Under 18 development team on Tuesday.

The local side had a tough test against the UK visiting team with the latter playing a very physical game which saw them chasing long balls deep into the area.

Gibraltar's young boys coped well at first with the

long balls, clearing at every attempt for their first part of the first half. As Steyning, who are touring Malaga, settled and got used to the bounce of the ball they begun to push Gibraltar back further, breaking down the wings and forcing young keeper Hanglin to come out on several occasions to clear.

Gibraltar had their own chances in the first half but it was Steyning Town who hit the ball into the back of the net from a corner. With Steyning Town having the

CoreSportGib

Football

07.04.2016

advantage in height they made good a corner to the near post which was well placed beyond the keeper's reach for the first goal.

Gibraltar were lucky not to concede a second when young Jadyan produced a one handed save on the goal line to keep Gibraltar in the game at the very start of the second half.

As the game progressed Gibraltar seemed to find their own feet and started to push forward more. Breaks down the flanks and quick counters forced Steyning back, however, Gibraltar's young boy could not find the back of the net.

Their encounter with the visiting UK side provided the young local boys with stiffer opposition than they

are accustomed to through their own leagues. As the minutes passed they got accustomed to the pace and the physicality of the game showing signs that they can handle themselves.

Although Steyning is unlikely to prove to be as strong an opposition as they are expected to meet in Cyrpus, Gibraltar's youngsters provided a good tactical performance that kept Steyning from having chances in the second half and saw them taking the game to the UK side.

Gibraltar will be travelling to Cyprus next where they will play Liechtenstein, Cyprus and Belarus.

Futsal or Football? National squad player Lopez asked to choose

Football

07.04.2016

Midfielder Andrew Lopez was dropped from the Gibraltar United team for yesterdays match against Lions, as he prepared for the forthcoming futsal international against Scotland. The midfielder who has played both futsal and 11 aside during the past season played this weekend's last futsal league

matches and is now preparing as part of the national squad selected to play futsal against Scotland at the end of the month.

With just six matches left for the end of the first division senior domestic league Gibraltar United CoreSportGib understands has given the player a

choice to either choose between eleven aside or futsal. The player who when asked did not wish to comment as he wished to remain in good relations with the club, confirmed that he will be proceeding with his futsal for the time being for which he will be representing Gibraltar at the end of April and would not comment further on the issue. Lopez has already scored at international level in futsal and is one of the key players expected to equal his previous feat again.

Gibraltar futsal are expected to play against Scotland and later on this year against Andorra.

Whilst there has been no official comments over Lopez's decision

CoreSportGib understands that Gibraltar United manager has spoken out against players playing both futsal and eleven aside prior to the latest incident after he watched key players from his team play both on the same match days. Robert Montovio and Pitu being among some of the players that have played in both leagues at the same time.

Speaking to CoreSportGib just after the transfer window at the end of the festive season the Gibraltar United manager indicated that he would prefer players not to play both and would support moves which would stop players playing for other clubs in futsal whilst playing for another in eleven aside.

Play off places decided

Futsal

07.04.2016

The semi-final play off places for first division futsal league were decided on Saturday with the final round of matches which saw one of the highest scores in futsal this season as St Joseph's put 24 past Cannon.

The afternoon started with Gibraltar Phoenix, who were in fifth place, taking on College 1975. Unexpectedly the latter scored first opening the score on the 3rd minute. Phoenix came back with three of their own to take

the lead in the first half. They soon completed their victory putting two more past College 1975 to finish 5-1.

Next came the thriller of the day as St Joseph wanted to ensure they ended the campaign in style. Bottom of the table Cannon were no match for the Saints who quickly brushed them aside. A free scoring, free playing St Joseph put 24 past Cannons, who themselves were able to score two. St Joseph's dominance of the game was so great that

Futsal

players were looking at scoring the "spectacular" goals rather than looking for the easy options.

The third scheduled match of the day did not materialise as Manchester 62 made a nonappearance. The Manchester side who had struggled to show up with enough players in previous matches forfieted the match to Glacis United who were seeking to confirm their place in the play offs.

The weekend first division action finished with the match of the day as Lynx, already confirmed as table toppers took on fourth placed Scorpions in a 10-5 thriller. A tense high intensity match was contested both teams

knowing that the final score line would decide who they would play in the play offs. Lynx found themselves in the lead early on, but saw the gap reduced as they got to half time with the score at 4-2. As the second half started a two minute hattrick by Duarte put the score at 7-2, Medina making it 8-2 just a minute later. With the score seemingly beyond reach Scorpions came back with two of their own to make it 8-4, Lynx responding with two further goals as Scorpions clawed one back leaving the match at 10-5. Neither team could be faulted for playing the match all out to win.

The results leaves the top four prior to the start of the weekend going through to

the play-offs.

Phoenix, with league top goal scorer Ledesma in their ranks lost out on the play off place through goal difference.

Surprisingly Manchester 62 and Cannon were the two bottom clubs in the table even though both Lincoln and Lions had not left the league earlier in the campaign and had forfeited their points to opponents. Team

GFA finally announce international match

Futsal

07.04.2016

The Gibraltar FA has announced, a week after CoreSportGib had already reported the fact, that two Futsal International Friendlies will take place later this month. Gibraltar's National Futsal Team will be in action twice, with Scotland as opponents on both occasions.

Both matches are to be played at the Bell Sports Centre in Perth, Scotland on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th April 2016.

An official squad announcement in addition to further match details will

be released in due course.

The Gibraltar squad has been training during the past month with a selection already picked for the forthcoming international.

CoreSportGib understands that the delay in confirming the matches was due to a delay in verifying travel arrangements.

Gibraltar futsal is also understood to be in talks for a second international against Andorra in which Gibraltar is expected to play both in Gibraltar and Andorra.

Fun Day sees moment of history

Grammarians held their 65th Anniversary Fun Day on Saturday taking over the training hockey pitches in what was to be a memorial moment. Players from all ages, young and old gathered for the event which saw a Veterans tournament played out with two visiting teams from Spain.

the applause of those gathered, with a rousing standing ovation the 78 year old former keeper, legend and founder of Grammarians played out part of the first half bringing back many memories of days gone by for those present.

The veterans tournament had been aptly named the Albert Rammage Cup as a tribute to him.

The occasion was made extra special with the decision for 78 year old Albert Rammage to don the Speaking to Albert goalkeepers kit one more Rammage just a three days time and take to the field. To later, whilst he watched the

"We didn't wear that in our days," he recalled, "ofcourse I needed help to put it on, in my days it was a few pads and that was it."

Rammage also spoke with excitement at the prospect of watching the Grammarians Under 16, "other teams complain that we do nothing, or nothing is done, but we have started early getting them started young," he commented as he explained that whilst other teams were playing senior players, many of

The legendary Gibraltar former goalkeeper also recalled one fact that many forget, he was the only hockey player that had competed on the field as a player in the Great Britain Olympic team. A fact which to this day remains unparalleled.

Eagles v Grammarians shrouded in controversy

Hockey

07.04.2016

The dark clouds that hand over Gibraltar's men's hockey emerged again as the Clash between Eagles and Grammarians was once again shrouded in controversy. Some players and officials remarking after the conclusion of the match, and the incidents before, that "these is what is keeping people away from hockey and has led to its present position."

The clash between Eagles and Grammarians on Sunday saw the bitter rivalry between the two sides emerge from the very instance both sides started to warm up. As officials checked the line-ups doubt was cast over the legitimacy of one of the players listed in Grammarians line-up. A heated argument between team coaches and officials could be heard from the

CoreSportGib

Hockey

07.04.2016

stands and saw the process to reach a decision on whether the player could legitimately play or not delay the match until the Gibraltar Hockey Association (GHA) had given their decision on the player. The matter was compounded further when the Grammarians coach indicated that he would not pull the player off the lineup suggesting that the team would be removed as he had been told by the GHA that the player could play prior to putting him down in the line-up.

After over a 15 minute delays for the match to start a decision was made for the match to continue, although by this time one of the umpires pulled out indicating that considering the discussions and his

position on the matter he did not feel it was appropriate for him to umpire and asked for someone else to take up his place.

With a replacement umpire agreed between the teams the match was allowed to continue.

The match was high in intensity with both sides battling for possession. Although Eagles had more of the initial play at first it was Grammarians boys who took the lead. Eagles continued to press on the young Grammarians side looking for the equaliser. However, a quick break saw Grammarians increase their lead to two.

As play progressed both teams scored bringing the

CoreSportGib

Hockey

07.04.2016

score to 3-1, Eagles then came back to score their second and put further tensions on the match as the latter sought to equalise. Grammarians though came near to scoring themselves as the match neared its finale.

As the game came into its last minutes the tensions came to a head when two of the young members of both Grammarians and Eagles clashed with arms flaying towards each other. As the players were separated the female umpire Espinosa called both players to the side with calls from the more senior ranks of Eagles heard from the sidelines calling on the official to send both players off as they did not agree with their own players

actions. The umpire made her decision on the spot sending both players off in what was an action applauded by neutrals and some supporters watching the match. Unfortunately the incident also saw how the rivalry between the two sides, and past historical differences saw calls from some sectors of the small audience raising tensions with their own remarks over who should be send off.

The match ended 3-2 for Grammarians although the incidents before and during the match left much to be desired for the state of local men's hockey in Gibraltar which has unfortunately spiralled downhill in recent years.

As supporters and some

CoreSportGib

Hockey

07.04.2016

players from both sides also commented later, "those on the field were there to enjoy hockey" and would rather see the back of the "politics" and "rivalry" that surrounds the sport.

The match in itself was a tense but exciting match in which both teams played with a desire to win.

Although you could slice the tension in the air with a knife due to the competitive rivarlly between the two sides, this in itself made for the match to have a competitive edge.

On both sides there were the detractors. One side claiming that the more veterans side were the stronger team because of their experience and on the other that the younger side

were a stronger team because of their young age and stamina.

Neutrals could, however, not be blamed for thinking that neither of these two factors mattered much as the match was finely balanced and provided some entertainment on the hockey field which is much needed locally.

It was good to see experienced veterans showing their skills and knowledge against youngsters learn the ropes to progress to one day become veterans themselves.

The ugly side of hockey was not a welcomed sight though and should be left where it belongs, in the trash can.

participate. The Gibraltarian coaches are described as having "enjoyed the experience tremendously and were assessed as being competent to Coach at that level." A spokesperson for the Gibraltar Hockey Association said "The second half of the programme will take place in Breda, Holland in late August and our Coaches are already looking forward to it. Local umpire and FIH Umpire of the Year for 2015 Nathan Stagno continues making the headlines.

Stagno appeared in a full featured article in this month's EHL online edition. The local umpire is quoted sayin that “Nobody from Gibraltar has gone to the Olympics except for one of my son’s friends, Georgina Cassar, in gymnastics,” he said of his career. “Because of this the Gibraltarians are very proud of who I am and where I have come from.”

Speaking to EHL Stagno advised, “Be yourself! I am Latin! You have to be yourself on the pitch. If something like moving your hands in a certain way on the pitch helps, you do it. You do not want to overdo it. The players accept it and respect it.”

Telford & Wreking play local teams

Hockey

07.04.2016

Telford & Wreking Hockey Club started their visit of Gibraltar with a win at Under 16 and a defeat at senior level with their predominantly under 18 side.

Established in 1895, Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club is one of the oldest hockey clubs in the UK and is one of the leading clubs in the Midlands. They have a membership base of 225 with 55 Adult members, 150 juniors and 20 social members, making it one of the largest Amateur sports club in Telford.

Throughout the week they are scheduled to play two matches a day with the next two matches being the under 16s against Grammarians Under 16 team, and the Under 18's against Eagles.

Their first encounters this week were against Grammarians. At Under 16 Telford & Wreking went behind against Grammarians Boys in the first half after the local side scored 2 early goals. The visiting side, however, pulled back the score and went 3-2 ahead before Grammarians drew level. A

Hockey

mistake at the end of the match by Grammarians let through the fourth and final goal for the UK side to win their first encounter by 4-3.

Telford & Wreking then went on to play Grammarians senior men's side with a predominantly Under 18 team. Although including some senior players among their ranks Telford were no match for Grammarians who went ahead within the first fifteen minutes through two short corners and a penalty. Telford pulled one back with the score at 4-1.

Resolute and confident defense by Grammarians gave the UK side very little chance up front throughout the match with Grammarians dominating play throughout.

Grammarians were to come out 7-1 winners in what was a big test for the visiting side.

Grammarians Boys clinch back a win next day

elford & Wrekin Under 16 played Grammarians Boys the next day, just twenty four hours after they were defeated 43 by the same team.

Grammarians Boys came back with the equaliser and the match became wide open as both teams played some great individual play, both looking for the win.

Unlike the previous day it was Telford who took the lead. Probably the point that shifted gears in Grammarians to push them further not to repeat the fate from the previous day where they had taken the

space before passing and to become more offensive.

Grammarians Boys were told that they were losing the ball too quickly in the frontline and should be looking to go forward and if they were to lose it to do so further up field.

The talk seemed to work as Grammarians played to keep the ball and became even more offensive scoring their third.

As Grammarians continued their offensive a short corner brought about their fourth goal.

At 4-1 Telford had a bit more of the possession

which they had lost and after being denied by the keeper they eventually scored their second. Grammarians hit back stealing a long cross ball going through the d and with an angled shot put the fifth past the keeper; another stolen ball making it 6-2.

Just 24hrs after their initial defeat of 4-3 Grammarians were comfortable winners by 6-2 against an Under 16 which just 24hrs early had been described as a feeder team for the Under 16 and Under 18 England national team with five of their players expected to be playing for England.

Eagles nearly snatch it against Telford

Hockey

07.04.2016

T

he visiting Under 18 squad of Telford & Wrekin played Eagles on Wednesday evening in what was to become an exciting encounter of two halves.

Eagles started well taking the ball forward and pushing Telford back during the first 7 minute sof play. It was to be their downfall, as they approached the first half as an offensive team. Eagles whose main players would otherwise be considered veterans in

other places where playing players some 20 years or more their juniors in some cases (except for the very small number of Eagles players below their 20's).

Telford took full advantage of this fact when they opened their score with their very first attack at goal. At first the match was evenly balanced. Eagles lacked Telford's pace but made up with experience.

As time went on and Telford settled they also increased their pace. A short corner

CoreSportGib

Hockey

07.04.2016

brought about the second goal for Telford. The third, just seconds later, was a matter of being out paced by the much younger Telford side which was essentially an under 18 side backed with a spine of veterans spine for this match.

As the half was coming to an end Eagles were no longer chasing at the back leaving the doors wide open for the 4-0 to come. Three Telford players against the keeper before a defender arrived in support a touch too late.

Eagles had been broken apart before half time, having tried to play with an offensive approach, but which had failed as they were physically and quite literally run to the ground.

Eagles players were looking more at the clock (in this case the umpire's watch) than at the scoreline. Although still battling on. The local team with the ball at their stick were another kettle of fish. Their experience and skills showed as they controlled the pace when they had the ball and even reached the opponents d with a threat to goal.

Eagles, knowing they were a veteran side, could have parked the bus and held on to the score but maintained their formation with front men and open spaces. It was not their ability to play, as with the ball they out did their opponents. It was their lack of pace and stamina which Telford used against them that left the Eagles chasing what could have

CoreSportGib

Hockey

07.04.2016

been a widening result.

Going away 4-0 down at half time Eagles returned with a new focus, and much needed fresh air.

Experience brought about two consecutive short corners the second of which they converted.

And then, yes, eagles parked the bus defending as a whole unit with just player up front.

Eagles absorbed Telfords front line pressure keeping them well clear of their D. Instead of chasing the ball or even chasing the much faster players as they had done in the first half they were waiting for them to come, as a unit. Four players stayed behind at all times, closer to their D and

ready to get stuck in and hold until their midfield came in support.

The tactic worked as Eagles, playing on the counter forced another short corner Counter. Again experience showed as Eagles forced Telford defence to concede them. Eagles second goal came from another short corner play to make it 4-2. Telford although pressing had not had a shot at goal in the second half by this time and were only to have one more shot at goal.

Eagles permanent defensive formation was cutting off Telford's supply to its front men and were forcing them to chase back as they countered quickly through very long passes to their front men.

CoreSportGib

Hockey

07.04.2016

As Telford failed up front Eagles were forcing saves from the keeper in their counters. Again the experience from players who had in their careers sampled European hockey soon forced Telford into further mistakes at the back. A penalty brought about their third and final goal, but not before there had been calls for a second penalty close to the end.

The differences between Telford and Eagles were clear to see and hear as a silent Telford Wreking, moaning at umpire calls, contrasted with the banter between Eagles players who were enjoying their game and mocking their own colleagues lack of stamina or minutes of play.

Eagles were unable to score the equaliser, although they deserved it. The score ending 4-3 in favour of Telford & Wrekin who must have felt relieved not to have actually lost the match after Eagles second half turn around.

Athletes in time trials

Athletics

07.04.2016

Athletes prepared for the forthcoming track season with some pre-season timetrials on Sunday. Among those participating included Jess Franco, veteran Liam Brynes and Harvey Dixon who raced for the first time this season in Gibraltar.

Some 12 young, and not so young, athletes participated in mixed races on Sunday afternoon which saw timetrials done for the 200m and 1500m (the latter race not finished as the lone athlete left standing inexplicably

stopped running himself).

The time-trials also saw some controversy as two of the main GAAA officials argued between each other in front of athletes over differences in the preparations. The argument marred the afternoon races for those who had attended in what was described as unofficial time-trials by athletes.

The time-trials also brought about concerns over the selection process in picking

CoreSportGib

Athletics

07.04.2016

representatives for Gibraltar. With only one athlete chosen for events, those close to athletics have questioned why the GAAA has not adopted the same policy as other federations in allowing all qualifying times to enter. Observers pointing out that whilst some athletes have reached the qualifying times required, athletes competing abroad, and with more races under their belt are being chosen over athletes who have trained all year round to reach qualifying times, only to find themselves excluded in the end even though they have successfully completed their qualifying time requirements.

Similar concerns have also been raised over foreigners applying to enter competitions and through loop-holes also seen as possible candidates who could achieve the necessary criterias to represent Gibraltar, although not having performed locally. Some veteran athletes advocating for the introduction of a policy to see qualifying times completed and achieved in national trials in Gibraltar and not based on performances during the season, some of which could, through the present policy be done solely outside Gibraltar.

“Having warmed up whilst the second half was underway in the previous game, the national teams of Malaysia and Gibraltar took to the field shortly after the final whistle had blown. The presentation of their teams by the captains of both sides to the match delegates was followed by the National Anthems and quickly thereafter by the

opening blast of the referee’s whistle. The slippery conditions following the earlier rain meant the first scrum wasn’t long in coming and the two, evenly-matched packs were soon packing down. Gibraltar’s forwards quickly asserted their scrum-time dominance, an area of the game which has quickly become the cornerstone of their performances. Pushing the Malaysian team off the ball and winning the scrum against the head, a short attacking move led to a penalty for not releasing once the ruck had formed. Malaysia kicked for the corner and the rolling maul that followed led to the opening score. Converted from out near the touchline, Malaysia took the lead by 7 points to nil.

The remainder of the first half followed a very similar pattern. Gibraltar dominant at the scrum took numerous penalties against the head. Solid defence from the Malaysians as well as the touring side meant fast backs were regularly meeting solid walls of defending players. The Malaysian backs however kept the ball under control and managed a number of silky offload manoeuvres which any International 7s team would have been proud of, running in 3 more tried before the end of the half. Add a penalty to this and the halftime score was a healthy 27 to nil lead to the home side. Gibraltar were quick out of the blocks at the start of the second half, attacking well and holding the Malaysian team in their 22 for the

opening 10 minutes of the half. Multiple penalties were given against the defending team with Gibraltar opting for the scrum each time. On another day, a penalty try or yellow card would perhaps have been given. Ultimately, after another attacking scrum, the ball slid out of the side of pack for the home-team 9 to kick downfield ending the attack. A Gibraltar attacking lineout is stolen leading to a nowfamiliar sight: a break away by the sizeable Malaysian inside centre who then offloads out of the tackle for the right wing to finish off between the posts. Another late penalty kick followed by a similar break by the Malaysia 12 feeding to the substitute full-back to score again brought the score approaching full-time to 420 to the home side.

The game came to its conclusion with more attacking runs from Gibraltar’s backs, notably from Matthew Isola, Teddy Sacarello and Hamish Couper, but Malaysia’s defence proved too tight to break through. A last gasp interception saw the Malaysians sprint almost the length of the field to score a final time. Final Score: Malaysia 49-0 Gibraltar

Vets win it in Malaysia

Rugby

Report Courtesy of Gibraltar Rugby

Wednesday saw the opening games of the GRFU tour to Asia, 2016 and after an early morning swimming pool session with team Fitness Coach, Sally Holmes, both the Development/Veteran squad and the National Team headed back to the hosts facilities at Cobra Rugby Club House for a quick lunch before making the bus journey to UKM MiniStadium.

First up were Gibraltar Veterans/Development taking on a Malaysia

Veterans Select team featuring Veterans and some of Cobra Club’s development team. Some old(er) hands and potentially hazy heads on both sides meant the game leant itself towards the forwards, with many a scrum to be enjoyed! When Gibraltar’s Development Team players did manage to get their hands on the ball, their youth showed with fast feet and a series of slick backs’ moves.

The Malaysian team’s backs were equally talented

and offloaded from the tackle whenever possible. This led to a fast-paced game but one filled with numerous handling errors as both sides tried to gain an advantage over their opponents. Halfway through the first half with the Malaysians defending a scrum 10 metres out from their tryline, good pressure in the scrum and on the home team’s fly-half led to a clearing kick that only reached Adam Cook near to the halfway mark on Gibraltar’s left wing. With a brilliant piece of individual skill, he chipped over the approaching defensive line only to collect his own kick some 5 metres from the try line to dot down in the corner. Rich Hatchman failed to convert putting the Gibraltarian team up by 5

points to nil.

Shortly after the restart, a high tackle from a Gibraltar player led to a penalty which the Malaysians took quickly. A fast, through-thehands move from their backs left their winger with acres of space to nip down the wing to score under the posts. A slip as their kicker took the drop-goal conversion meant the scores were tied at 5 all at half time.

The game remained a draw throughout the second half with neither team able to break the stalemate. The half-time lightning storm which delayed the start of the second half had brought in some rain which led to a close-knit contest between both sets of forwards.

Eventually, some attacking defensive pressure from Gibraltar caused confusion as Malaysia were trying to clear their lines, finally fumbling the ball over their own dead ball line. The subsequent 5-metre scrum was shunted forward by the Gibraltar pack allowing Captain and number 8, Chris Lyons, to pick up and force his way over the line to score. The final whistle blew as the conversion sailed wide of the posts. Final Score: Malaysia Select 5-10 Gibraltar Development/Veterans.
