Shambolic Angels give match away against Europa

Football

T

Europa 3-0 Angels

he Gibraltar First Division was brought to ridicule when relegation bound Angels FC turned up onto the field with just seven players against second placed Europa FC. With seven players the match could still be played, although with the rules stating that the match would have to be abandoned if a team had less than seven players observers soon pointed out that it would not take long for the match to be abandoned. Europa, fielding a team which already had many of its first team players in the stands or bench had already

come prepared to test out some of their less regular players. They were however, not to have much chance of doing so. Angels were fielding their President Hoskens as a defender, even though his introduction into last weeks match against Britannia had seen them go from 3-0 up to losing 4-3 as from the moment he walked onto the field.

Sources from within Angels confirmed on Monday night that the team were aware that they were not fielding a full team from earlier on the same day. A car accident had left two players unable to attend. Players are also said to have already decided that they would not be continuing with the club. One key player also confirmed that he

had informed the club that he refused make the two to three hour car journey to Gibraltar unless it was confirmed that they would be fielding a full team. When this was not confirmed he decided to stay behind. His decision came on the back of his substitution two matches earlier which had led to him being sidelined the next match for speaking out against the coaches decision to replace him. Europa went into the lead very early in the match. By the 13th Minute they were 3-0 up and it was a matter of time before predictions would materialise. At least two Angels players rubbed their knees following the third goal. Just second after restarting an Angels player dropped massaging his leg. A quick consultation between the official and the player and it was determined that he was not going to continue play. The 8th man, who had appeared late at the stadium, did not have any time to finish talking by the bench and

head to the changing room. As he spoke to those at the bench the official blew for the end of the match, abandoning the match and leaving Europa with only a 3-0 scoreline to show for their appearance.

Many obervers, even a first division coach who had turned up to watch the match sighed at the outcome of the match suggesting that this would only bring Gibraltar football into disrepute if a first division side in UEFA was allowed to not even field a full team in a crucial first division match without further sanctions. His comments were echoed by other representatives of various first division clubs who had been watching. The result leaves Europa still 8 point behind Lincoln but now provides further security for those fighting at the foot of the table as Angels revival seems to have been exhausted.

Gibraltar United prove doubters wrong

Football

Lynx 0-1 Gibraltar United

We are going to win today,” that was the very emphatic, confident remarks of a Robert Montovio prior to the start of Gibraltar United’s battle against fourth placed Lynx.

Gibraltar United had failed to secure any points in their relegation battle against Glacis United last weekend, and was looking at a relegation playoff unless they started accumulating points. Fourth placed Lynx were not the punters obvious choice for them to do this, but as the first half concluded it was obvious doubters could be proven wrong.

Gibraltar United had played out a very defensive game, not changing their own game play and concentrating on not letting the opponents through to goal. At every opportunity Montovio and Perez had prodded Lynx’s defence causing mayhem as they surged forward. A very young Under 17 Robert, replacing Robba in goal for the day, was given a baptism of fire as his namesake Robert (Montovio) tested him out even in the chases for a back pass.

Lynx dominated most of the play but found they were unable to strike with danger at goal. In the first half they had only had one shot on target.

Football

The second half started with Lynx pushing even harder and causing danger in Gibraltar United’s penalty box. However, Montovio was soon to make his words count as he struck from a quick break and put the ball past the young keeper (who had done little wrong in the match). Gibraltar United celebrated as if they had scored in a cup final, as Lynx heads bowed in realisation that after all their effort they were now 1-0 behind.

Lynx threw all the guns at Gibraltar United who just formed a solid wall in front of goal.

Gibraltar United held on to the bitter end, blocking every shot, scrambling for every pass, swarming in every intrusion into their penalty area. The last ten minutes were as if Gibraltar United were under siege from two teams as shot after shot rained in, cross after cross rained in but young Aidan’s goal remained clean. As the final whistle blew the joy in Gibraltar United’s ranks were clear to see as players celebrated a deserved victory

Goals galore for Wilson's men

Football

Lions 6 - 3 Glacis United

ave Wilson and Rafa Bado's start as coaches at Lions could not have been more exhilarating in a match that had everything in it, including goals galore and red card incidents, with seven goals in a second half. Glacis came from having made the first steps away from a relegation play off place after beating Gibraltar United last weekend. Lions, however, had only drawn against Manchester 62, had also seen the door to their manager and although with little to win or lose expect pride now had two interim coaches to end the season whilst they look towards the Rock Cup semi –finals. Lions stepped ahead scoring early

in the match only to see Glacis step up their own game and come back with the equaliser.

The match was to take on a ding dong type affair as both teams played it out with nine goals and two red cards completing what was an eventful match in which Wilson earned his first three points as coach. Lions, who had found it hard to find the net in recent weeks came out of the battle with six goals to their name, a marked improvement from previous performances. Wilson and Bado's presence very much apparent at the touchline as Lions seemed to have been re-energised. Glacis did get three to their name though. A total of seven goals scored in the second half after both

teams came out level at 1-1 at half-time.

Glacis, who maintained their game plan of trying to use their now not so secret weapon of the fast counter attack were effectively shut down from doing so. The loss of two of their players to red cards did not help their cause as they were reduced to nine men in a match in which they were hoping for points to leapfrog Britannia XI, who were one point above them before the start of the weekend. Lions momentarily put themselves above Lynx, and increased the gap between themselves and Manchester 62.

The differences between the two became very clear when looking at the league table after. Lincoln’s win places them 29 points ahead of St Joseph who are in 3rd place.

Lincoln still reached the Saints area with danger even from the first few minutes getting three corners in the first five minutes, before Saints defensive formation pushed the match into the centre of the midfield.

Cabreras, who was fractionally offside, stuck a foot out to flick it past Perez for the first.

St Joseph’s did not change their tactics much, and maintained their pressure in the middle, without looking for an all out attacks which they knew would see them left wide open at the back. Instead they played out for quick counters which were soon dismantled by a firmly positioned Chipolina and Garcia partnership.

Lincoln came into the second half pinning St Joseph’s into their own half, forcing Perez to make some very good saves to keep them out. The pressure, nevertheless led to a second goal as Lee Casciaro, who had just been brought on, met a cross from the wide left and slotted it in for the second. Without St Joseph’s really having much luck when they went forward Lincoln kept their lead intact. A last minute penalty gave Lincoln their third and final goal to seal the game.

Manchester 62 eases past Britannia

Football

Manchester 62 (6-0) Britannia XI

A shambolic performance by Britannia XI left Manchester 62 controlling the match from the very first minutes of the first half as they eased to a comfortable win.

Britannia, although starting off quiet brightly soon faded as Manchester 62 scored the first goal, Toncheff, who had played out his one match sanction via the reserve fixtures, broke through and passed to Hernandez, alone in the penalty box, and with Barnfather beaten, for the 1-0.

Britannia’s woes continued as on the 23rd minute a cross into the centre

of the box saw Hastings smash it into his own net for an own goal. A cracker of a goal had it been a Manchester 62 player scoring. Just three minutes later Toncheff put his name on the score sheet.

Already 3-0 down Britannia walked back onto the field from the half time break missing a keeper as Lee took up the gloves. Manchester were not to capitalise on Britannia’s vulnerability at the back having lost their first keeper and main centre back in one sweep. It was not until Lee had asked for a change to allow Reyes to go in goal that Toncheff smashed in his second from a cross from the right.

Even though Britannia tried to push forward with the score at 4-0 Manchester were playing a pedestrian game, allowing younger local players like Mikey to accumulate some much needed minutes on the playing field.

Manchester was to score two more through Isola and Lopez, ensuring their place in the first division.

Return of women’s football to our pitches

Football

Lincoln Red Imps Ladies 2-0 Lions Ladies

Women’s football made a return to Gibraltar’s football pitches after a lengthy absence whilst the Gibraltar Football Association sought alternative allocations for the girls. On Saturday Lions Ladies played out a tight match against Lincoln Red Imps ladies which eventually saw the latter win by 2-0.

The match was played on pitch 1, the main pitch, with new lines drawn in to accommodate the 9 a-side format the women’s league has taken. The pitch which was more of a square than a rectangle

measuring 80m by 70m saw the ladies struggle to accustom themselves to the width with most of the play at the centre.

Lions with new temporary coach Jansen Olivero on the touchline whilst Adrian Parral attended to his European Coaching Academy in the US was getting accustomed to his role as manager. Parral had to leave for the US on a pre-planned trip which he had scheduled for after the end of the women’s season. However, the over seven week delay in restarting the league meant that his team were still to complete their season which should have ended by now.

Lincoln took advantage of the narrower defensive play by opening up their game in the second half and playing wider. The two teams nevertheless concentrated most of the play on one third of the pitch with very few scoring chances. An issue which observers on the sidelines, including the women’s national coach pointed out. Lincoln became the more dominant of the two as the second half progressed Lions defence, especially their keeper seemed frustrated at the manner the match was developing, which led to them losing their focus and giving Lincoln the chance to score their second and final goal.

Boys against men - Street Soccer put them together

Football

The Street Soccer League SPring Cup was played out at the MUGA on Sunday, under the menacing rain clouds. The event, the second tournament of its kind this year brought together players from all categories and levels, allowing those who just wanted a competitive kick about without the training and commitment of club football to take part.

It was an enjoyable events, and one in which some players had humble pie for lunch as they saw themselves beaten by some unlikely opponents.

In one match the balance seemed to

be all wrong when youngsters, no more than 12/13 or less in some cases, came up against grown up men.

The balance was surely wrong, the men were obviously going to win, but not until the match started that it was obvious it was heading the other way. The boys soon took the lead, and within minutes the somewhat beer bellied adults were already 5-0 down, without a single shot at goal to thier name. This was Street Soccer League, where anything can happen.

A total of nine teams took part with JP Haulage lifting the cup in the end.

TOP FOUR THROUGH TO CUP SEMIS

Basketball

The teams currently occupying the top four places in the GABBA First Division table were successful in their quarter final ties. The closest of these ties was the only one between 2 First Division teams, in which Isolas Blue Stars overcame Europa 73-70.

It was a hard-fought encounter right up to the end, unfortunately marred by the sending-off of Europa’s Carlos Perez, a very good player with a volatile temperament. Early in the last quarter, Perez hit an opponent in the face and got an unsportsmanlike foul for it, which was his fourth personal foul. He then threw the ball at the referee, just

missing him, and was promptly disqualified. This was his second disqualification this season.

The 3 foul shots for the offences were converted, putting Isolas 59-50 ahead but Europa rallied, led by Jason Schwartz, and almost saved the game. The first quarter was tied 16-16, Isolas edged the second 1513 and the third 23-20, losing the fourth 19-21. Raul Garcia 22, Angel Guerrero 20 and Alex Ruiz 12 led Isolas, while Shwartz 19, Perez 14 and Jesus Fernandez 10 were best for Europa.

In the other ties, CS Bayside Argus (Aaron Turner 38, Stephen Britto 16,

Solomon Ojapah 13, Nicky Lopez 11) beat Valmar Wrighttech Reserves (Rodney Sheriff 17, Alejandro Ordoñez 17, Ian Viñales 16, Kyle Pecino 12) 95-74; Valmar Wrighttech (Juandi Camacho 37, Jesus Camacho 19, Julian Smart 12, Juanma Cabrita 12) beat Europa Youth (Santi Palacios 11, Jose Pozo 10) 99-53; and Mill Pharmacy Airball (Ian Yeats 17, Liam Banda 15, Reagan Lima 15, Fabian Marzan 11, Chad Medina 11) beat Isolas Blue Stars Reserves (Sami Tunbridge 25, Stuart Felice 22, Ethan Santos 12) 77-65. WOMEN’S LEAGUE FOR MONS CALPE GIANTS It was a foregone conclusion that Mons Calpe Giants would run away with the Women’s League, such is their superiority, and, following their 52-38 win over Panthers, it’s a reality. Karla Gomez 15 and Joelle Moreno 10 led the winners’ scoring

while Valerie Doherty 21 and Caroline Robba 10 were best for the losers. Jets (Anabella De la Chica 24, Celine King 10) beat Sparks (Arianne Garro 20) 64-43 to clinch third place.

The champions play a Rest Selection in Tuesday’s presentation game, tip-off 7:30 pm. U18 LEAGUE WILL BE DECIDED IN LAST GAME

This season’s most attractive and spectacular games are, without a doubt, in the Under 18 League. Fittingly, following the latest wins by Isolas Blue Stars and CS Bayside Argus, the last game (on Wednesday 27th April at 5:30 pm) will decide the title. Isolas have lost once, to Bayside, who have themselves lost twice, but the headto-head between the two is 1-1, so,

although a win for the latter would bring them level on points, they would take the title on the head-tohead.

Isolas, with superior fire power, from Sergio Gil 34, Aaron Santos 24, Alex Garcia 20 and Jamie Mesilio 15, could not find ways to stop the brilliance of Ian Yeats, who hit a game-high 45, well supported by Julian Smart’s 27, and it was only in the last 3 minutes of the game that, led by the enigmatic Gil, they pulled away to register a 99-84 win. Bayside (Nicky Lopez 28, Jayron Sevilla 22, Kyle Tellez 13) beat a depleted Europa (Alberto Rojas 28, Stefan Tellez 15, Santi Palacios 13, Liberto Carande 11) 78-68 in another excellent contest.

ISOLAS BLUE STARS U16 AND U14 CHAMPIONS IN WAITING

Mathematically, not quite, but

realistically, only an upset of mega proportions can prevent Isolas Blue Stars from becoming Under 16 and Under 14 League Champions.

At Under 16, 1 win in their last 3 games – they are unbeaten – will be enough. At Under 14, they have to make certain that they turn up with the regulation minimum 8 players for their last 2 games. Latest results: U16, Valmar Wrighttech 76 (Julian Smart 34, Aimad Ben Youssef 30) – CS Bayside Argus 41 (Mikey Jeffries 30); Isolas Blue Stars 88 (Alex Garcia 28, Jamie Mesilio 23, Rafa Aradas 16) – Europa 55 (Michael Rodriguez 21, Alberto Rojas 11).

U14, Isolas Blue Stars 63 (Sami Tunbridge 27, Haitham El Hichou 14) – Valmar Wrighttech 26 (Airidas Viktorov 18); Europa 63 (Djordge Parkovic 16, Ethan Penfold 14, Liam Santos 13) – CS Bayside Argus 41

A couple of weeks ago this reporter prematurely announced that Europa B had won the Second Division. This was incorrect. Also on Friday, Valmar Wrighttech Reserves (Ian Viñales 17, Alejandro Ordoñez 16, Adrian Castellon 11) beat Europa B (Andrew Barratt 21, Damian Holmes 12, Jonathan Cisarello 10) 59-56. This result means that, if Isolas Blue Stars Reserves beat Europa Youth in their last game, Europa B need to beat Valmar Wrighttech Veterans to clinch the title, as a defeat would give it to the blues on a better headto-head. A win for Europa Youth will give them runners-up spot and hand Europa B the title, regardless of their result. These matches are scheduled to be played on Friday 13 May.

In an Under 16 League game, Europa (Alberto Rojas 28, Joel Lobos 12, Stefan Tellez 11) beat Valmar Wrighttech (Julian Smart 21, Mohamed El Yettefti 16) by 61-38. SEAN’S NIGHT

Gibraltar Basketball makes two young boys dreams come true as they play together

Basketball

I

t was an emotive day at the Tercentenary Sports Hall on Friday evening, thanks to the efforts and ideas of Stuart Felice (player coach at Isola Blue Stars), the collaboration of a whole Isola Blue Stars team and Valmar Wrightec team, the GABBA President (also FIBA) John Goncalves (who without his authority none of it would have happened) and a basketball family of Tunbridges who knew how to keep a secret well within their own household.

The story started several weeks ago when Stuart Felice had wanted to

give young Sami Tunbridge a chance to fulfil one of his wishes. The young teen Isola Blue Stars player had commented that he had always wanted to play alongside his brother Sean, a young boy who had been wheelchair bound since young due to a rare illness, but believed it was one thing he would never be able to do.

Sami and Sean come from a family of basketball players, Paul, the grandfather, Wayne, the father, and Tom Tunbridge and Francis Caruana the uncles all played. With Sami in the ranks of Isola Blue Stars, as was the grandfather and Sami's father

and uncle in the ranks of Valmar Wrightec the occasion had come when father and sons would meet on Friday in a B Division match.

Sean had come to watch his brother in as many matches as the family could take him to, and Sami had always wanted to have his brother alongside him on the basketball court.

It was not difficult to convince the Isola Blue Stars team to take up the idea of letting Sean play for them for one match. It was even less difficult to convince GABBA President who thought the idea was incredible, it was far more difficult to convince a family without letting Sami and Sean know, but it was achieved. Friday evening saw emotions running deep as Sami and grandfather Paul joined the Isola Blue Stars Reserves ranks, on the bench at first, whilst Wayne, the

father, and Tom and Francis, the uncles, filed for Valmar Wrightec Veterans. As the teams warmed up the bonding between Sami and Sean was evident as the former looked towards his brother smiled and gave his thumbs up with an immediate response from the sidelines, a smile and cheer.

As the match progressed Sami was brought on for the first time towards the start of the second quarter. Minutes later his father came on. The first move was to see Sami having to negotiate a block from both father and uncle, winning a foul, to the joking laughs of his older relatives. His response was a three pointer. It was the start of a family moment which everyone playing was very aware and happy to be involved in. Just as the minutes ticked away, towards the halfway mark of the second quarter, grandfather Paul Tunbridge came on to the applause of the crowd. It was

father against son, on both sides, with a touch of uncles in the mix.

Unbeknown to Sami, Sean had been taken to get changed. Isola Blue Stars had signed him on for the match and would be bringing him on, even if only for a few moments.

As father played against son, behind the blue screen that signals the centre of the Tercentenary Sports Hall, the divide between pitches Sean was being assisted towards the benches. The signal came that everything was ready and coach David Parody called for a change immediately after a time out. Through the curtains, assisted by his mother walked Sean dressed in the Isola Blue Stars, as he entered the match court his father embraced him, Sami run to his brother and embraced him, and the small crowd of family, friends and basketball colleagues that had gathered cheered and applauded and some

tears fell. No more so than the tears of joy that run down Sami's cheeks as he walked back to play watching how his brother sat on the Isola Blue Stars bench. Coach David Parody handed Sean a basketball, making it even more evident that he was a part of the team. GABBA and Isola Blue Star John Goncalves sat next to Sean as the minutes ticked towards halftime. As the teams gathered for the halftime pep talk grandfather Paul, SAMI and SEAN were gathered around as part of the same team. A basketball family was now complete on the match court, forming a part of the Isola Blue Stars team, playing against their father and uncle.

A wish had been made possible, if at least momentarily.

Hockey

Hawks 5-2 Eagles

Gibraltar’s two European Hockey Challenge III hopefuls met on Saturday in a clash which could be called a warm up for their encounter in a month’s time where they will play each other in the European Hockey tournament to be held in Gibraltar. Hawks started the match nervy and unable to settle in properly, a description which one of their own players was to make after the match. Eagles went 2-0 ahead before

Hawks reacted and their game plan clicked into place.

A tightly fought contest, in which both teams played out to win saw Hawks take the edge off Eagles lead and bounce back. Watched by a visiting Teyminister team and fans the stands had some noise to go with the entertainment on the field as both teams clashed horns in what would be a statement of intent for next month. Both teams battled it out demonstrating that their recent under performances had been a minor bleep in the scope.

Hawks were to come out the better as they took over and jumped ahead into the lead, eventually winning 5-2.

The two teams are now in full training towards the European matches.

The match also saw the start of a 3 week period in which a selection of junior squad players practiced their role as “Ball Patrols”.

The young girls will be taking on the crucial role of “ball boys” as is commonly known, a role which is not often seen in Gibraltar’s hockey league, but which could prove essential in the forthcoming European Hockey matches.

Hockey

T

Collegians Veterans 4-7 Grammarians 2

hey might not be young boys any more, but Collegians Veterans are far from a totally spent force, at least that is what their momentary revival in the first part of the second half against Grammarians boys highlighted.

Three – one down at half time Collegians were to come out playing a hard, quick pressing game that gave them a momentary comeback.

However not before they also showed some real sportsmanship when Umpire of the Year, Golden Whistle man himself Nathan Stagno, who forms part of Collegians Veterans openly apologised to his opponents and was the first to indicate that their goal should never have been given. Collegians came out into the second half scoring an early goal. Just as quick Grammarians boys pulled one back to make it 4-2. However some quick play let the not so young Hernandez through to strike in the

third for Collegians. They were not to stop here. An excellent piece of stick work from several Collegians players left Grammarians Boys rooted to the ground unable to stop them reaching the by line and pushing the ball back to be slotted in for the equaliser. However, this was to be Collegians last goal. Their last puff of the day you could say. Grammarians came knocking back to put themselves ahead on 5-4 before some confusion among Collegians players in the rolling substitutions left their defence open to allow the 6-4.

Grammarians closed the score with their seventh and final goal, just before the whistle blew, and before it became too dark to play. Even with the presence of expensive floodlights, without the possibility of

these being used until all aircraft had landed and departed the floodlights would remain down. Luckily the match had been started earlier than normal and the overcast skies had not interfered with play too much. Collegians had shown that they were the true “regulars in the league still, even with most of the players in their late forties. The youngsters, although winning, and showing they have a bright future ahead were taught and on field and off field lesson as they argued decisions even with the veterans who on more than one occasion had turned around and put their hands up as having committed an offence rather than counter the umpires decision.

Grammarians pushed to limits in friendly

Hockey

G

Grammarians 2-1 San Fernando

rammarians were pushed to the limits by a San Fernando senior team that had just 12hrs earlier come from a 5-1 victory in their AndalucĂa League match against Alcala. San Fernando playing with Gibraltarian Gareth Henwood up front produced the best play in the first half. They dominated the pace pinning Grammarians back in their half. Quick play up front by Henwood had him with a constant shadow by him as they pressed for goal.

Grammarians nevertheless held on and produced their own chance which they converted to go one up.

In the second half Grammarians opened up the field with a bold move moving two players up front. As San Fernando sought the equalizer they were stretched. This allowed Grammarians more chance to prod forward.

San Fernando continued to press forward and earned numerous short corners. Grammarians keeper made several key saves to keep them in the game as San Fernando tired. An ugly scene was seen when Henwood after dribbling past four

players headed to goal and was tumbled over. A Grammarians defender stood over him shouting and grabbing at his shirt as he tried to pull him up from the ground. The intervention of other Grammarian players diffused the situation as he was led away with Henwood not having reacted to the aggressive response whilst he was on the floor.

Tensions seemed to rise and San Fernando were more determined to score. Within minutes they got their well deserved equalizer. However as the match neared its end Grammarians younger players produced a good break and struck an across goal swipe into the back of the net for the 2-1. The match was a practice match for the European campaign Grammarians are due to embark upon next month. San Fernando provided a good testing ground with a good track record this season including wins against Berliners recently. There was a marked contrast in discipline on the pitch between both sides however, Grammarians win, and their tactical changes at half time highlighted their strength.

Hawks put to test by Andalusian league winners

Hockey

Hawks 0 – 4 San Fernando

Hawks could not have chosen a tougher opponent to face immediately after a clash against Eagles the previous day. San Fernando women had just won the women's Andalucian league the previous day and came full of confidence and belief. Hawks were pedestrian in comparison to the previous day’s confident resurgence that gave them the win against Eagles. Just as they

had put five past Eagles, San Fernando put four past them to bring them down to earth. A well rehearsed well organised San Fernando pushed Hawks to the limits. Stretching their lines and pinning them back. Hawks looked tired and out of sorts compared to San Fernando who had played two matches in the same period of time and had travelled down to Gibraltar to play. Whilst on Saturday they had clicked together, they looked nervy even in the third

quarter as they allowed the Andalucian champions to further open the gap. Hawks had few chances to score and also saw their keeper Chelsea makes a brave penalty save once again. Hawks eventually lost 5-0, although the test was far tougher than even the Hawks ladies had imagined. Speaking to some of them after the match they admitted that they had not been aware that San Fernando were actually the Andalusian League champions this year.
