The drop looks closer for Angels

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

Angels look likely to be the team to drop into the second division directly this season after their latest defeat against Lion, but not because of their standard of play.

With 13 players changed since the start of the season, and under new guidance from a new coach Angels were anything but an easy opponent against Lions.

back to content page

As the match went on it looked more and more like it would be Lions who could have dropped the points, their only consolation at the end of the match being their solitary goal in the first half that gave them the 1-0 win. Lions had taken the lead early on with a goal by Martin on the 28th minute. Neither team had shown much in way of football to excite the small number of watching fans in the first

half. Lions had been held in the centre of the pitch and had made a few dangerous runs into goal, but with little effectiveness when it came to the finish. Angels for their part were seeming more in tune with their bottom of the league status as they seemed ineffective in finding a way into Lion's box when they got the chances.

From the stands Angels President Edmond Hoskens

could be heard shouting at his players in frustration, more than once telling them that the other team were putting more into the match than they were.

The second half soon saw Angels make changes which also saw a change in the mood of the game.

Mena, one of the few surviving players from the first half of the

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

season entered the pitch, and although in his usual slow pace demonstrated that Angels still had a chance of equalising. His first shot at goal a drive from the edge of the box to the far right of goal just scrapping over the top of the bar.

Angels seemed to spark into action, new boy Cordoba controlling from a deep back midfield position

back to content page

was spreading the ball with ease at the centre as Lions lost the ball to the back four. Lions had several good chances to go further ahead but found Filoho in top form as he made four superb saves to keep Angels in the game.

Angels undeterred by Lions danger up front when they got the ball turned on the style with some dazzling footwork and passing which

saw Lions defence having to tighten their belts and hold on.

Some of the footwork and creativity to get the ball forward highlighted the calibre of some of the players Angels had brought in, but they needed the spark to get them going. Mena seemed to have ignited them with his constant search for danger zones from which he

caused Lions defence to keep a tight control on his movements.

Angels maintained the pressure to the very last minute but were unable to find a clear way through on goal. Lions were left to look for quick counter attacks but found themselves having to back track quickly as Angels kept on the pressure looking for the equaliser.

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

With frustrations growing Angels soon lost a player as Cordoba found himself facing a second yellow for speaking out of turn to the officials. Although Angels had a free kick close to the box, Cordoba was seem shouting at the official and was alleged to have pushed

back to content page

a player getting a second yellow for his efforts and leaving Angels one man short at a crucial time.

With only ten men on the field Angel's task became more difficult, eventually losing by the solitary goal, their form however, still indicating that their defeat

of St Joseph and the fact they have only lost against Lynx and Lions by the one goal could still see them gain points to help their cause.

Angels will now have to find 9 points from the remaining six matches left if they hope to have a chance to survive

the drop. Mathematically still a possibility and with matches against Britannia, Gibraltar United, Manchester 62 and Glacis United still to come Angels will be hoping to take the points away from their closest rivals if they are to survive.

Manchester sink further down

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

This was going to be a high octane game, even though appearances before the match suggested differently as both teams arrived early and watched an under 13 match from the sidelines.

As players arrived the coaches spoke by the gates in a friendly manner, smiling as if there was nothing at stake in the coming minutes. Manchester players remained behind to

back to content page

see the end of the Under 13 match which had their younger team playing, whilst St Joseph went to prepare for their warm up session.

Appearances were however as fraught with erred as had been many observers predictions on Manchester 62 season. The early arrival of both teams was enough of a hint that both teams were taking this match

seriously, both teams at pitch side two hours before the game.

Manchester 62 knew before the 90 minutes that their survival in the first division was now at stake as Glacis continued to take points from top teams and were just two points behind them before the match. With Angels also having progressed and hinting at a change in their fortunes,

losing points in the last seven matches of the league could risk seeing them drop to the last two positions. Something nobody had even contemplated or wished to contemplate at the start of the season.

Manchester 62 one again started without JP Duarte who had been selected for the last 31 man squad for Gibraltar's

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

international friendlies.

St Joseph started the match playing a possession game which suited their purposes for most of the first half.

Controlled passing from the back slowed down what was the high octane match expected. Building from the back to the frustration of Manchester 62 who were looking at breaking quick. back to content page

The match suddenly turned on its head when Manchester did eventually break through. Two consecutive corners led to the controversial penalty for Manchester's first goal.

A corner struck low to the near post was judged to have been struck by the arm of a St. Joseph player.

Later Manchester players themselves would be

overhead commenting that "unless you called for it even if it hadn't hit someone's arm you wouldn't get it," referring to the penalty.

Toncheff converted the penalty against Perez who screamed in frustration. A few explicit phrases had been thrown towards the linesman already. Later he would be seen apologising to the same official over his

outburst.

Within minutes of the first goal, Manchester who had hardly reached the penalty area nearly struck again.

Mikey Yome, who has been called up to the 31 man GFA squad struck the ball, but without the potency everyone had expected and put it straight into Perez's arms.

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

St Joseph's upped their gears and started looking for an equaliser. A second defeat against a bottom side of the table team was not what they were looking for. Eventually Saints broke through down the right flank and with a cross into the middle saw the ball flicked

back to content page

back by Lopez to drop over Mateo and into the back of the net.

With the score at 1-1 Manchester came out attacking. St Joseph's who were hurrying when they received the ball were losing it in the middle giving

their opponents the chance to push forward.

St Joseph's suddenly turned the tables as they started getting nearer to the goal. Slowing down their game at the back by taking possession. Saints build play from the back and

started seeing their forwards breaking with some danger.

It was in one of this lunges forward that Gomez Torres picked up the ball and run into the box. Striking it with power the ball seemed to dip at the last moment

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

leaving Mateo, who was again first team keeper instead of Macedo, found himself stranded as he saw the ball go into the back of the net.

Saints took over control and went for the third. Two set pieces saw the ball strike the post. A bold shot from close to the halfway line saw Mateo having to race

back to content page

back to save. As he fell with the ball in his hands the keeper had to let go for a corner as he fell into the goal. Mateo's positioning was being put to question as it seemed luck was playing a part in keeping St Joseph from scoring as the ball once again scrapped just past over the crossbar.

Manchester had just a

handful of chances themselves, only forcing a save in the last minutes from Perez.

Manchester had De Los Santos injured during the match. The player just called up to the 31 man squad will now have to see what the extend of the injury usages limping off.

Manchester's weekend was to worse as the unthinkable happened and Europa lost all three points to Glacis the next day. Manchester third from bottom face crucial matches in which losing points could easily see them sinking lower down the table and having to fight to the last minute to stay in the first division.

Glacis out pace, out flank out hassle Europa

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

Few expected the result but those who had watched Glacis progress during the past weeks had warned before the match that Europa could be dealt with a shaock if they underestimated Glacis frontline potential.

Their warning would echo throughout the match as Europa found themselves behind from the first half in what was one of the most

back to content page

exciting matches of the season.

Europa could not be faltered for their game play. From the start of the match they had sought to find a way through Glacis and had played their normal "effective" football which had brought them close to the danger zones.

However Glacis had remained firm in their

positioning and gameplan and did not let the "might" of Europa and their European hopes daunt them.

Instead Europa were met by a game plan which had effectively destroyed other sides in recent weeks and was soon to prove as effective, although this time with a change up front. With Sastrie now gone, Lopez was back from his

six week suspension, and right on time and refreshed to demonstrate that he was the unquestionable number one forward for Glacis.

Lopez proved himself to be the "demon" that spoilt Europa's bid to stay in contention as he terrorised Europa's defence with high speed chases, and threats on goal, which even saw him try an overhead kick from the edge of

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

the box.

Glacis were intent in spoiling Europa's hopes from the start of the game as they bypassed all sense of midfield and smashed the ball forward for their front runners to do just that run.

A relentless kick and chase battle was seen with Lopez and Nunez at the helm running at Europa's back

back to content page

who were forced to backtrack at speed and not venture forward as time and again they were getting caught out.

Europa had tried to maintain possession and sought to play into Glacis area. However, they were met by a solid defensive wall that seemed well disciplined and with just one thought in their head, "keep them out." Glacis defence

would not venture forward or run forward. Their forwards would run for the ball, those they had a chance to get or a 50-50 chance to get, but they would not spend their energy on wasted balls. Instead they would trek back and position themselves to form the formidable wall that kept Europa out for most of the 90 minutes.

The speed in which Glacis countered was breathtaking, leaving everyone in awe as their "100mph" front line seemed to be inexhaustable.

It was in one of this many attacks that Glacis got their winner as Nunez beat goalkeeper Arevalo to the chase and slotted it easily into the back of the net as Europa's defence tried to get back.

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

Glacis contend on absorbing the pressure let Europa push forward after the goal. However, an impeccable well formed defensive play from Glacis left Europa with little to no chances at goal.

Even Jamie Carlin, whose antics at the back seemed intent on delaying the game as much as possible, proved himself to be in formidable faultless form.

back to content page

His continued treks forward acted as a sweeper behind the Glacis defence. His long kicks were also reaching the front players and allowing them to break at speed towards Europa's goal.

Europa found themselves chasing back at one point, towards the end of the first half as the ball beat the keeper and had to be cleared off the line by

defenders. Officials later recriminated by Glacis who believed the ball had gone in, although clearly not crossing the line.

The second half saw Europa pin, or at least they thought, Glacis back into their own area as they sought the equaliser. Glacis, who have now perfected the counter attack game, absorbed the pressure, allowing Europa

little space in the centre to find any opportunities at goal. Glacis' counter attack instead proved more lethal, with run after run at goal threatening to open the score further.

Glacis soon found themselves one man down and soon after a second man down as the official opted for red cards. With just nine men on the field, Lopez was left

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

alone upfront. His presence, nevertheless forced Europa to place two men next to him, reducing their effectiveness up front and reducing their advantage.

Neutrals within the crowd had turned to Glacis favour as their valiant performance looked destined to collapse at the last minutes.

Glacis held on, even past the 8 minutes injury time given by the officials and won 1-0 leaving Europa 8 points behind Lincoln.

Glacis were rewarded by leapfrogging both Gibraltar United and Manchester 62 and placing themselves at one point from Britannia. back to content page

With the devastating performance by Glacis they are now seen as potential team to keep on moving up the table. Their latest victory proving that Glacis transformation has been spectacular and effective and should see them well away from the relegation zone by the end of the season.

Europa now 8 point behind at the top will be looking towards the Rock Cup for their chance to play in Europa. However with teams like Angels next and even the possibility of facing Glacis again in the cup if the latter get through Europa's route could be hard fought and will be hoping Lincoln can also reach the final.

The yellow card farce during Lincoln victory

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

Lincoln against Gibraltar was probably the one match in which the most players called up for the national team would be seen. With just weeks for Gibraltar's next international friendly the prospect of seeing players pulling back further than usual to reserve themselves for the internationals was among the talking points. However, it was not the case as both teams entered the match

back to content page

full of determination to prove themselves. It was not until the second half that the match was to turn into a farce in which GFA officials would now need to consider the logic behind allowing sanctions to be played out with reserve league matches where first team players would also be considered eligible to play.

The match started with another controversy as both

teams played with white shorts and red stripes. The only difference between the two kits being the black stripes on Lincolns kit.

Officials had nonetheless decided that there was no colour clash even though pundits watching were themselves questioning the logic behind allowing both teams to play with similar coloured and patterned kits.

Lincoln, who have had a couple of mediocre matches for their standards were not about to let Gibraltar United think that they could take points from them. With Liam Walker now back to his usual best Gibraltar United saw themselves effectively pinned back from the start.

Used to the onslaught, Gib Utd held on and absorbed the pressure

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

for the first 25 minutes. Brad Power, recently selected for the national team, demonstrated why he had been selected as he commanded his defence.

Up front the lonely figure of Robert Montovio, who had been selected for the national squad too was to see his match end quickly as he received a knock that left him limping for parts of the first half.

It was not until the 25th minute that Lincoln opened their scoring. The next 20 minutes proved to be the match's determining factor.

back to content page

First it was Kyle Casciaro who broke through out pacing Gibraltar United's defence for the first.

Lincolns fast paced breaks from midfield were to prove too much for Gibraltar United once the red and black dynamites of Lincoln got going.

Just five minutes later, Cabrera, another of the national team selections, who was unusually played in the centre from the start, struck with his pace, beating fellow national team selection keeper Goldwyn as he came out to block him.

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

The third came on the 39th minute as Liam Walker, who had become the master in midfield decided to take a free kick. A deflection off the wall saw the Goldwyn stranded on the line as the ball went to the top corner away from his reach.

Lincoln finished Gibraltar United off with a fourth on the 42nd minute with a string of passes on the right side of the box which left

back to content page

Livramento with a clear shot on target.

GIbraltar United made their changes at half time, something that was to prove a tactical error as Evan Green limped of in the first few minutes of the second half after he injured himself.

The match transcended into a farce in the second half as players seemed to hold

back, many knowing that they were part of the selection for the next Gibraltar international friendlies, there was little in way of high pressure football seen in the first half. With Gibraltar United already four nil down the prospects of catching up seemed far from anyone's mind. Green and Montovio's early departure would also have send a shiver down the backs of many who had

made it to the squad.

Neither team seemed to put much effort in the second half except for their efforts to get yellowed carded.

From the stands Gibraltar United coach could clearly be seen gesturing to his players to get yellow carded. Actions which were done directly next to the fourth official.

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

As Goldwyn took his first and second goal kick in the half Gibraltar United's managers screamed at him and gestured holding his thumb and forefinger together in the air as if holding a yellow card, and telling him that he should not forget in the next goal kick. Similar gestures were also made to Perez and Buhagiar who were to play out some extraordinary scenes to get their yellow

back to content page

cards.

Goldwyn, who seemed a reluctant participant at first finally obliged and stepped to take a goalkick.

He soon backtracked and tried again. It was not until his fifth attempt that the official finally run to him to show him a yellow card.

Within minutes it was Lincoln who seemed to join

in the game as Lee Casciaro did the same for a free kick. From the sidelines Gibraltar United's coach could now be heard summoning his other two players, clearly heard shouting to one to do it during a throw in.

The best yellow card performance came when Buhagiar played out a "go here, no go there, no go here" with Currer as he was

due to take a throw-in, just as instructed. Lincoln players had left Currer totally unmarked with enough space to have a walk about, yet Buhagiar kept on signalling him to move to one spot, then another, then another, then another until finally referee Parody was forced to give a yellow card to the laughs of the crowd who were in awe at the scenes.

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

Within minutes Perez managed to get his own yellow card with the ball being driven miles away he grabbed one of the Lincoln players by the arm and turned him around enough to be seen by the official, but without causing any injury to the player. Three previous attempts at similar actions had been either gone unchecked by the same official who seemed not to want to yellow card

back to content page

the players.

The scenes have led to questions over the yellow card sanctions which can be played out in reserve matches, leaving players free to play in their next senior first division games. With Gibraltar United due to have a reserve match before their next senior first division match, the players will come into the next matches free from yellow

cards.

The blatant manner in which the yellow cards were obtained have led some observers working close to the GFA questioning whether further sanctions should be given. One source indicating that UEFA has already set a precedence in the past in similar situations by increasing the sanctions against players when such

situations are observed.

A league manager watching from the stands was himself in awe at the scenes. He exclaimed that whilst it is known that teams seek yellow cards to rest players or have them free from sanctions for crucial matches this is normally spoken about or requested in private, during changing room conversations or away from matches.

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

Not as blatantly seen during the match next to the fourth official as was seen on Saturday and to the full knowledge of officials and in the farcical manner seen on the day.

The match also saw Lincoln go down to ten players when Navas limped off injured. Joseph Chipolina was called upon to wear the keepers shirt. For the fifteen minutes in goal he did not have to make a single save.

Lincoln came out comfortable winners, placing themselves 8 points ahead of Europa, who were later to lose against Glacis to affirm Lincolns dominance at the top.

Yawn away Lynx Britannia

Football

There was little chance that the Lynx v Britannia clash on Tuesday evening would move the earth with excitement as it had moved earlier that morning with the earth tremors in the Strait of Gibraltar.

It was more a matter of could the handful of spectators, quite literally a handful, still be awake by the time Lynx scored. That was how the 90 minutes

back to content page

panned out. A lacklustre affair where anyone coming in to watch late would probably have thought, as someone did, that Lynx were already winning by a large margin, and Britannia were just doing their best not to let anymore in.

Lynx were the dominant team on the field, but their skilful footwork on the ball in midfield did not translate to chances in front of goal.

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

A handful of strike on target had been easily saved by Barnfather or pushed out for corner, but little else had happened to write home about.

The biggest talking issue of the first half was the yellow card received by a Lynx player for allegedly diving. The player, who had run into the penalty area and had squeezed in between two Britannia defenders

back to content page

was dispossesed and as he jumped over the players landed on his knees as he clearly lost his balance.

Immediately getting up and chasing after the ball without even gesturing for a foul. The match official had other ideas when he blew for a foul and showed the player a yellow card for feigning a foul to the disbelieve of his teammates, the player

himself and the few people watching.

The first half had been all about Lynx attacking and trying to find a way through. The second half started much the same way. The return of Guilling to Lynx's first eleven added pace to the flanks where he combined well with Javi Chico. New signing Vidic also

showed signs of promise causing Britannia all sorts of problems up front, but failing miserably to find the target.

It was not until halfway through the second half that Vidic Lazar showed why Lynx had made so much about his signing. Collecting on the left he run into the penalty area where he dribbled past two defenders, before

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

pushing past a third to set himself as Britannia keeper Barnfather run out to attempt to block him.

Vidic calming struck the ball past Barnfather for the first goal.

From then on Britannia saw themselves slowly deflating further, if that was possible, and played as if they were just hanging on to a 1-0 defeat.

Lynx continued with their attempt to score another, but found that their finishing had not changed much after the goal. It was not until the very last

kick of the night that Lynx found the next again winning 2-0 against a Britannia side which are but a mere shadow of their start of the season. Supporters could not be blamed for staying away from the ground on a chilly Tuesday night, immediately after a long weekend. Even those who stayed could not have been blamed for going with the little excitement brought onto the field by both teams. Lynx only redeeming factor being the nifty footwork players such as Javi Chico, Lazar, Montengro and Guilling provided as they weaved through Britannia's defence.

Walking football, run and it’s a foul

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

Yes, the title is correct, football where running is not allowed. That is the beauty of the sport of football, that it can be as versatile as you require and it can reach as wide a group of people as you wish.

Walking football is the latest idea to have been launched in Gibraltar by the Gibraltar Football Association in conjunction with the GSLA

back to content page

and other charitable organisations involved in providing leisure and sports services to the over 50's, such as PAAMOA.

On Friday a group of "younger" players were put through their paces by a team of 50's, 60's 70 year olds who had, for the past six weeks, been practising the sport in their leisure time, as part of the official launch of the sport.

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

Very much football, but with one rule that many found difficult to adapt to, you just couldn’t run, or for that matter slide tackle, it was cheating and therefore considered a foul. The ball was just the same as in football, the pitch just the same, the goals just the same, the tactics just the same, but it had those special rules which made football more accessible to larger groups who in their

back to content page

senior years didn't have the opportunity to kick a ball around.

Some admitted to not having kicked a ball around in a match for ten, twenty or more years. The chance to do so had not been there, yet they were all very willing and able, and wanting to do so. Football was in their blood and the desire to play was still there.

The aim of the launch of the sport was to encourage others like them to join in the sport so that more and more people could participate. Countless of former players exist, both male and female who still enjoy the sport, but due to health reasons, physical fitness or just mere fact they have reached a certain age they have not had the opportunity to continue with the sport.

Speaking after the match during a social gathering, which in itself is part of the overall idea, we found likeminded people talking among themselves enthusiastically about the match they had just played, with the same excitement as you would expect from the younger generations. CoreSportGib spoke to some of them to find out what they thought. First on hand was Alex

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

Lopez from the Gibraltar Referees association who had officiated one of the matches said, "you see them walking but they do not walk when they start running they can't. It's actually very enjoyable seeing people of their age, my age enjoying football.

Today's launch went very well, we enjoyed ourselves and we can now have a cup of coffee, it was great fun

back to content page

really."

Gladys Sanchez, one of the women who went to participate said "I really enjoyed it the tendency is you want to run."

"Yes I have always liked football, my dad was a ref he used to take me to the matches in England I think it has been at least ten years since I kicked a ball about, we played a charity

match for the airport and I played for them," she added, "more and more women will eventually get into it."

Amelia, representing PAAMOA, thought it was "a great idea" from the point of view of her organisation, adding that her association offer different activities for senior citizens "this is yet another one," she added "very different to what we

do it opens up new options, not only health wise but also socially, and it will probably attract more male members to our association, and above all working in a very very safe environment so I think it’s a brilliant idea."

She indicated that she definitely would encourage other people to join up. "Our association runs water based classes and it

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

might encourage people to join if they do not like water based activities."

Amongst those who had played during the launch was also women's footballer and referee Stacey Rowbottom, daughter of Linda Alvarez. Asked what she thought as a young person of her walking football experience she said "it was excellent it was so difficult to walk and not run,

back to content page

the competitiveness of even the older players gives you the wish to run I found most of this players wanted to play football."

Asked if she would do it again she replied that she enjoyed it and seeing that that is the main objective of it indeed she would.

CoreSportGib also had the chance to speak to Gibraltar FA's Grassroots

Manager Leslie Asquez asked what he thought of the launch he replied, "I think it a very positive launch this group of guys have been doing it for the past seven weeks and the Gibraltar Football Association with PAAMO association and Gibraltar Sports and Leisure Authority are going to get more people to get into playing walking football. We are going to get more

women to participate also."

Although the media had arrived late due to a minor error in the times send out we did catch Leslie scoring at the launch match, so we decided to ask him about his experience on the field. "The thing is I want to run, the mentality is you want to run but then you realise you have to walk so you stop.

Sometimes I could

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

have gone running, done dribbling or whatever, but its walking football you cannot run because if you run it’s a foul. You really do have to participate in it to realise the difficulties. Once you get into the system I think it will work properly."

Asked if this was more of a skill and tactics based game approach rather than physical Leslie agreed,

back to content page

"there is no need for contact, no sliding tackles just walking and passing the ball. You can see the faces of the guys they enjoy it and they have fun with it and yet they are doing a little bit of fitness."

However, the very description of a "bit of fitness" was not quite as simple as it would seem as one player admitted that

walking football might look easy, and might seem that you do not strain yourself too much because you are walking but players still need to remember that they are stretching muscles they might not have done so in many years, especially kicking the ball or stretching to control. One player told CoreSportGib that indeed he had felt the strain the next days after playing for

the first days, and had injured himself, not the injuries you would associate to the other football, but still muscles had been strained and noted. Walking football had proven to be more than just a fun game, it was a very good way of keeping fit, without the need to run and to stretch muscles he had forgotten he had.

Gibraltar starts friendlies with a win

CoreSportGib

Football

17.03.2016

Not much publicity had been seen from the GFA that the veterans were playing on Saturday so it came as little surprise that even the fans watching the Under 17's in a penalty shoot out during a cup tie were stunned to see the Gibraltar Veterans squad walk out to warm up.

Gibraltar was to play Cleobury Mortimer Old Boys, a bunch of lads from

back to content page

the UK who when asked who they were by CoreSportGib described themselves as "a bunch of lads who meet up on Thursday to play football and then we go to the pub for a drink."

The UK based veterans were on tour, and were warming up in their unusual style. Many of them over 60's some lounged under the sun taking in the bright

sunshine that shone throughout Saturday over the stadium. They even confessed to have some young lads playing for them after a couple of their players were injured before they arrived. However, they were far more concerned at the age of the Gibraltar veterans who were fielding an over 35 team. Not many in the 60's unlike the Uk based vets.

Gibraltar veterans were the first to kick off the international fixtures with their pre-arranged match against Cleobury Mortimer Old Boys and they were the only ones to score on the day. The UK based vets were no push overs showing that even at over 60 as some of them were their battling spirit was still

there. There was little evidence that they were just a Thursday night pub team, their record in recent tours showing that they played far more than they were letting on that day.

Gibraltar opened the score with Colin Ramirez scoring the first.

In the squad was also Minister Gilbert Licudi who provided proof that his ministerial role had not taken away his appetite for the game, running at the UK vets and forcing them to concede a penalty as he run into the penalty area for the second goal.

Gibraltar went on to win 30.

The final saw both teams play a strong exciting match with Bishop Fitzgerald coming out on top with a goal in each half.

The boys tournament saw teams from St Bernard's Middle School (formerly Sacred Heart), St Joseph's School, Hebrew School, St Anne's School, Loreto Convent and Bishop Fitzgerald playing.

The Girls mini league was played during the past week, with four teams from St Bernard's middle school, St Annes, Bishop Fitzgerald and St Joseph's playing throughout the week. The girls were playing two matches a day which led to St Joseph's and Bishop Fitzgerald as finalists.

The final, played just before the boys final at the Victoria Stadium was filled with

drama as Bishop Fitzgerald overcame a two goal deficit to finish the game on equal terms with St Joseph's. A penalty shootout followed which resulted in a sudden death which gave St Joseph's the trophy.

Minister Gilbert Licudi and GFA General Secretary Denis Beiso presented the winner with their trophies at the end of the boys finals.

U17 Europa come from behind to win

An entertaining match which saw both teams balanced in play. Glacis had more of the chances in the first half but were unable to capitalise. It was not until the second half that Europa had a player send off and were reduced to ten men. The player throwing his boots towards the wall by the benches as he came off.

With just ten men Europa held on until halfway through the half. Glacis striking with a clean shot off the keepers reach for the 1-0.

Europa responded with a free kick just going over the crossbar.

Glacis went on to score a second. Just as the match entered last ten minutes Europa scored from a corner giving the final minutes some tension. In another free kick Europa scored the equaliser as the ball rebounded off the keeper.

The match went into sudden death with Europa winning the penalty shoot out.

St Joseph pulled apart by Scorpions

CoreSportGib

Futsal

17.03.2016

St Joseph's were pulled apart by a devastating performance from former Lincoln boys Hanafi, Azziz and Nauofal who now played for Scorpions.

Already 4-2 up at half time, Scorpions stung time after time as Nauofal led the way to quick counter attacks that left St Joseph rubbing their heads at how to break past Scorpions to score. back to content page

St Joseph's usually lethal in front of goal found themselves trailing with every miss or block as their shots did not seem to want to go in. Either Chichon saved, or the ball went narrowly out, or was blocked by a solid defence as St Joseph's shooting at goal became more desperate and erratic as the second half ticked on.

Scorpions instead found

themselves going 5-2, then 6-2, 7-2 and 8-2 before St Joseph's were able to get one back. Nauofal led the way as he took on St Joseph's defence and combining well with his fellow colleagues Azziz first, then Hanafi and finally Pilli

struck time after time as they run at St Joseph to break to goal.

As the second half ticked on St Joseph's seem to deflate further allowing more space and play by Scorpions who had not only

taken the lead in the scoreboard but were not beginning to control the game.

A further four goals left St Joseph rubbing their wounds as they went down 12-5 against fifth placed Scorpions.

With Lynx winning in the previous matches on the day St Joseph were now six points behind and seeing how the Lynx were beginning to dominate at the top.

Lynx keep lead at the top

St Joseph's were unable to close the gap between themselves and Lynx, after the latter went on to beat Pheonix by 7-2 earlier in the day.

Lynx, running away at the top made it look easy with their 7-2 win against a team that has been bidding to enter the top four with wins against Scorpions. St Joseph, clashed with Scorpions now fourth in the

back to content page

table and failed to show signs that they will be overtaking Lynx.

Already 4-2 down in the first half St Joseph were failed to convert their many chances in the second half and saw themselves falling behind as Naoufal's devastating performance in quick counter attacks provided Scorpions with that extra sting which took them 5-2 up, then 6-2, then

7-2 and finally 8-2 before St Joseph's hit the back of the net.

Scorpions eventually won 12-5 as St Joseph's lost their confidence and were on the backfoot.

In other matches College destroyed Manchester 62 with a 16-1 score line providing further evidence of Manchester's demise in the futsal first division as

they continue second from the bottom.

Glacis remained in contention for top three with their win against bottom of the table Cannon. Although the official GFA league tables still show Lincoln and Lions neither team any longer play in the league, providing Manchester 62, Cannon and College 1975 a chance to remove themselves from the

Daryl, King of the Road

CoreSportGib

Athletics

17.03.2016

CoreSportGib speaks to him exclusively to find out more about the man who won this years Road Racing league. Two Sunday’s ago Daryl Vassallo became the King of the Road taking the necessary points from the Round the Rock Race, even though injured, to finish at the top of the season’s league table.

CoreSportGib has since caught up with him, we are not as fast a runner as he is, but we did track him down and asked him a few questions. Daryl has not had an easy

back to content page

season. Several of his races have had him either injured during the race or pre-race. As a shorter distance runner road racing would not be where you would think you would find him. Yet he has still been crowned the King of the Road. A feat in itself.

CoreSportGib - Daryl, King of the road after the last road race? How does it feel?

Daryll - To retain the king of the road title was one of the winter training set objectives..so it feels good to have met the set target.

CoreSportGib - It's been a tough season where you have had a couple injuries yet managed to come first tell us a bit about it?

Daryll - It has been quite hard for me to handle such long races as 10km as my training is targeted for an 800m .. then combining the faster track training and gym training with any road race is always difficult and may provoke injuries as such. Thankfully i was able to win a couple of the shorter races and i defended myself on the longer races making it always in the first 5.... and

CoreSportGib

Athletics

17.03.2016

even run an injured 11th place to finish the league.

CoreSportGib - You last race you were injured but completed it coming in 11th. How hard was it for you especially since this was the round the rock race?

Daryl - The last league race was a new experience for me...for the situation i was in ..injured and knowing i had to finish 8 places from Abdulah and 12 from walker to win the league. It was only that Thursday before that Itried running and couldn't so it was a big risk i took. Thankfully it ended positively for me finishing in 11th doing enough to win...yet i was more glad to had finished than anything else. back to content page

CoreSportGib - You are actually a shorter distance runner I gather. So what next?

Daryll - Yes i am preparing the 800M quite well this year. I am feeling a lot faster now than i did last season so my next target as from April is simply to tackle several 800M locally and hopefully elsewhere if my level is competent enough.

CoreSportGib - Although King of the road you had Rogers winning some of the last races but not being part of the league. How important is it to have more competition even if not part of the league?

Daryl - Yes Arnold didn't take part in enough races

CoreSportGib

Athletics

17.03.2016

to make himself count. Nevertheless it is very difficult for me or any track athlete without doing the quantity of kms for these long races to give any sort of challenge to a marathon runner who probably goes over the 100km per week when track athletes hardly go over 30km, as we tend to do more track & gym training. Yet it is always good have more competition of a higher level to push everyone to the limit.

CoreSportGib - You have been racing for some time now. How do you see the present level of competition as opposed to past seasons?

Daryl - I'd rather not compare as the past has

back to content page

passed..but On the road and track we have seen that Kim Baglietto has been to the highest Gibraltarian level running NR. And on the track we have seen Jessy Franco also running a 100M electronic NR. So I would say they are keeping the standard there. So the target for myself and the rest of the local athletes should be to match up with them two Gibraltarian top athletes performances.

CoreSportGib - Athletics had the rivalry between calpeans and Lourdians once upon a time which fuelled athletes. That has since been lost and it's very much individuals now. Do you think that's a detrimental thing for the sport or do you think it's

An injured Daryl completes the race

CoreSportGib

Athletics

17.03.2016

better?

Daryl - I do believe that having rivalry between teams is fundamental in any sport. Having the team event in the league has helped and somehow has revived the competitiveness in us all. We hope that these teams carry on competing with each other for the sake of the sport.

CoreSportGib - Any objectives you have set yourself for the year?

Daryl - My objective is to get as close as possible to my 800M PB and of course beat it if I can. I know it's a personal target but that is how I enjoy athletics nowadays.. enjoying my day to day training and also the competitions without any added pressure. back to content page

Boys show will to win

Basketball

17.03.2016

Wrighttec and Bayside youth sides played it out to the very last minute in what was a fluid well balance match between two teams demonstrating the passion to win is still alive in the youth games.

Bayside came out of the first quarter marginally ahead. Valmar Wrighttec soon came back into the match and took the lead keeping it until two minutes from half time. A tactical error by Bayside coach during a time out saw Bayside take advantage of

back to content page

players being rested. Bayside went into the second half with a ten point lead. Stealing and blocking in defence they netted 12 without response to go 3141 ahead.

Wrighttec seemed at first to be on the back foot. With Bayside only able to put away four baskets, Wrighttec came back into the game. In the last seconds of the third quarter they netted the equaliser. The fourth quarter was wide open. Both teams under pressure to score, but little

going in at first.

It was Bayside who edged ahead but with one minute to go only a point between them split them apart. Valmar Wrighttec then saw Bayside nudge ahead by three. As they tried to claw back they gave away a crucial foul that left them five points behind and just three seconds on the clock. Bayside winning by 65-61 in an exciting game of youth basketball.

In the other match of the night it was Isola Blue Stars who dominated throughout. From the start Isola Blue Stars led the game, with a substantial lead by the end of the first quarter which saw them 22-10 up.

Isola Blue Stars increased their lead by increasing

back to content page

their scoring ratio scoring another 33 points in the second quarter against Europa's 14 which put the match at 55-24 for Isola Blue Stars.

There was little Europa could do, as the young lads heads hang down and they watched Isola Blue Stars tear them apart. The antics by the coach during the first interval did nothing to raise Europa's game. The coach clearly heard from the stands shouting at his players with the crudest of languages which saw many of the players shoulders hand down instead of uplifted.

Europa came back into the game a bit in the third quarter when Isola Blue Stars eased the pressure. The Europa young boys

CoreSportGib

Basketball

17.03.2016

took advantage of the fact and netted 28 points, more than the two previous periods put together. Had that been the first quarter they would only have been 32-28 behind, however with the substantial lead already established and two periods already gone Isola Blue Stars came out of the third quarter leading 75-42.

Isola Blue Stars reached the 90 mark with three minutes to go. However, in those last three minutes they were unable to capitalise further just putting in two points. Isola Blue Stars were eventual winners with a 92-62 score line. In any other match 62 points could have given Europa the win.

Nevertheless, the contest was still very open at the start of the fourth quarter as

MPA’s lead was only 5 points (50-45), having taken the first-half quarters 15-11, 18-17. The third quarter was tied 17-17, but MPA clinched the game in the fourth, winning it 18-12 for a final 68-57 scoreline. Andrew Yeats 22, Dylan Gomez 12, Michael Medina 11 and Fabian Marzan 11 led the winners while Stephen Britto 23 and Solomon Ojapah 11 were best for the losers.

Earlier, Isolas Blue Stars recovered from a poor third quarter, which saw them lose their half-time 37-26 lead, built on 21-13, 16-13 quarter splits, to start the fourth 47-49 behind as Europa, powered by Carlos Perez’s 16 points, and a hard-working defence, took the quarter 23-10. Indicating that this was not the last planned events, he stated his belief that Gibraltar could reach further heights in the sport as it was achievable.

As a player himself he expressed the belief that the standards in Gibraltar were already high enough to compete against ranked players commenting that GIbraltar players were more "than capable" reach aim high and reach their objectives.

Speaking to CoreSportGib before the draw presentation Paul spoke of how he had been playing in the UK against some of the pros, reaching the quarter finals in one of the recent events he had been

involved in.

Paul was an enthusiastic player with a lot of passion for the sport, and when presented last November with the opportunity to bring the high profile IPA World Series event in Gibraltar he had been more than willing to do so.

Further commenting that "this was the beginning, there is further more to come," as he and his partner explained that they wanted to lift the profile of pool in Gibraltar to the next level. World Series is an exciting new concept from the IPA, giving both Professional and Amateur players the opportunities to play in new upcoming and established Blackball playing countries. It is an opportunity to

showcase the talents of the IPA to a new audience, helping raise the profile of both the players and the IPA.

Six new Professional qualifying events have been created, which will be played over three weekends (Sat & Sun) in

early 2016. Each event will be played down to the semi finals. The four remaining players will then play the final stages in the relevant country later in the year.

Shocker as Grammarians beat Hawks

CoreSportGib

Hockey

17.03.2016

Hawks the hosts to the Challenge III Eurohockey championship to take place in Gibraltar in May were treated to a late evening shock on Wednesday as Grammarians Girls held them from the start and eventually took over the lead and extended it for a win.

The young girls had just a few months ago been at the wrong end of an 8-0 score

line which had seen them struggling to contain Hawk ladies.

The bitter archrivals, whose historical differences have added to the tensions on the pitch were on equal terms until around 15 minutes from the end when Grammarians struck for the 2-1 from a short corner. As Hawks looked for the equaliser Grammarians took advantage of a break

to slot in the third. Their opponents tried to come back into the game scoring their second under some controversy after a call for feet was disputed by players.

As the seconds ticked towards the end Hawks pressed hard looking for the equaliser. With 25 seconds to go, the umpire having shouted it loud enough to be heard by everyone, Hawks were awarded a short corner to the frustration of one of the Grammarians players. As a Hawk player responded to the remarks a small confrontation ensued which saw the umpire expel both players from the field. Hawks pushed all their players forward for the short corner. As the ball was struck first it swung to one side, struck again and the time having run out, the ball swept past the outside of the post to the jubilation of Grammarians girls. The latter winning 3-2. back to content page

NO NObanter banter please! please!

Football - Rock Cup

The talking point from the match was anything but the actual sport. Manchester 62 versus College 1975 was a mismatch which still had many wondering how College 1975, rooted at the very bottom of the second division, reached the quarter finals.

Manchester 62's win was everything but a surprise, expected to win by

back to content page

double figures due to their high level of play and the status in the first division Manchester impressed little. Although constantly attacking there were found to be only thing keeping the score down.

Manchester 62 were miss firing in front of College 1975 goal. Numerous strikes were either not getting there or fluffed

over the bar or far from goal.

They, nevertheless found space to score 3 first half goals. This was later increased to even more when College 1975 found themselves one man down after the biggest talking point of the match.

The score line was very much irrelevant from the start, with even College

1975 players somewhat in disbelief at being the quarter finals of the Rock Cup, one player commenting that they were sat at the bottom of the league just before walking onto the pitch.

College 1975 did put in a good show, for their standards, and tried to make it hard for Manchester 62, but it was Manchester 62

who were making it hard for themselves not killing the game off from the start, and missing some easy chances. Especially against a goalkeeper that College 1975 themselves described as their futsal keeper. There was a jovialness among College 1975 which was clearly seen with their banter with the handful, literally speaking, of supporters in the stands watching.

back to content page

It was in one of this interchanges that the biggest talking point emerged as someone in the crowd shouted in Spanish to a College player that "he" meaning the official, "was scared of him," to which a likeminded retort was shouted back and followed by "we shall have a pint later" (in Spanish).

The official soon brought out a yellow card and

subsequently the red card as this was the second yellow. The player walked off laughing at the fact he had been send off, as he left the field he explained that he had received the first yellow for making a joking comment to the official which he had tried to explain was only in jest, the second yellow coming for joking with his mates on the stand who were referring to the first incident.
