Twelve young ladies will walk out to the centre court on Friday at the Tercentenary Sports Hall to represent Gibraltar in the Europe Under 17 Netball Championships. Months of training, day after day will have gone past. Selected from a group of young ladies who had trained for six months solid together, it is now on their young shoulders to do Gibraltar proud. Indeed expectations are high. Yet on the day they walk out

onto the court they will already have done Gibraltar netball proud.

After watching them train, compete in the league and overcome odds on the not so friendly environment of warm up matches against senior select teams it is the team spirit and progression of this team that will have done us proud. Under the watchful eye of their coaches team Gibraltar have created an elite set of players whose rhythm on the court,

passing, movement to free space is a delight to watch.

Last Friday the team played one of their routine warm up matches. The movement in passing, the communication between players, without the need to speak at times, the energy in intercepts, the running into open spaces and importantly the team spirit between them was astonishing to see from a Gibraltar side. Those who have had the chance to see them already

spoke with pride of how this was probably the best formed national squad from all of Gibraltar sports, and indeed coming out of the training grounds one could only support this view. There was no arguing, no individualism, no ego trips. The young ladies listened to their coaches, they listened to their teammates, importantly they did what they had been advised and listened again. Something that in many other

sports is difficult to find on the field of play, especially among

a whole collective such as one single team. A testament if any to the manner in which Netball Gibraltar has developed the ethos behind which its players perform on the court. Win or lose the young ladies will have worked for their achievements to be named as the players to walk out on court. Gibraltar hosts the Under 17

championship this very Friday, in two years time it will host the Under 21.

It is now Gibraltar that must work to be named as the extra player to stand behind them as they take on their visiting rivals and bid to become European champions. A feat which is not beyond this set of players. A feat which could take this very players to bid to become Under 21 champions in 2018 if Gibraltar stands behind them this week.

CoreSportGib speaks to

Moira Gomez This weekend Gibraltar sees the Netball Europe U17 Championships hosted locally.

Netball in Gibraltar was revived in 1991. From the humble beginnings of just eight senior teams, netball has become the leading ladies' team sport in Gibraltar and the most popular sport for women and girls on the Rock.

CoreSportGib had the chance to speak to President Moira Gomez who was awarded a Netball Europe Service Award in 2010.

Coresportgib - This Friday Gibraltar sees Netball Europe U17 Championships hosted locally, eight teams including our national team competing. So tell me how much of a nightmare has it been organising it all?

Moira - Anyone who has ever been involved in organising any event can tell you there are always hiccups along the way. What has made it easier for us is that we have been preparing for these Championships from last June, just after our season

ended. In our first meeting we discussed time frames for the different requirements and very importantly each of our roles. We matched each of our strengths to who was leading in which area; it is an incredible team. I would not call it a nightmare but more a journey with bumps and curves and believe you me it has been challenging at times but I am sure we will laugh about it when we look back. Coresportgib - When did you start organising the event,

and how many people are in your team?

Moira - We are a small committee of 8 ladies very passionate about netball, however I must say the response we have received from GNA members wanting to help out has been overwhelming.

CoreSportGib - Netball is one of those sports that everyone remembers having played in school at one time or another, which has been around for decades, yet it has never had the prominence it suddenly has. Do you hope this will

change?

Moira - I am hoping bringing the Championships to Gibraltar will inspire more players to take up netball, create awareness within the community of what a vibrant game netball is and attract the appropriate sponsors to help us take the sport to the next level.

CoreSportGib - The Netball Europe U17 Championships is a chance to promote the sport locally, what do you expect will come out of it for the future?

Moira - The core of Gibraltar Netball is development. We

strive to provide opportunities for our members not just the players. As you know, Officials make the Game. If we don't invest in their development GNA will not have a future. A structure is vital it helps us to plan, set targets and also allows members to know what they are working towards. The committee always meets at the end of every season to evaluate and discuss the outgoing season and at the same time plan ahead for the new one our Competitions Secretary Lauren Lewis has kept us

Netball Special sane during this time. Again planning is important when Netball Coaches would visit, Umpire workshops etc Allocations are so limited that a calendar of events is circulated as early as September to all members and updated monthly so we can have maximum use of the facilities. (I suppose I am letting you know all our secrets) We could not achieve this without the relentless energy from everyone. CoreSportGib - Apart from the championship we understand you have various other things going at the same time. On the one hand

you have a development programme for umpires, a development plan for younger players, and you have one of the most extensive sports leagues I have seen for netball with matches played nearly every day. Can you tell us a bit about how it' been keeping everything in perspective?

Moira - The u17 squad is always a great age group to work with they are so enthusiastic, so full of energy always wanting to improve it makes it so much easier for the coaches, and the fact that there is competition amongst the players to make it to the team encourages them to

3rd March 2016

work even harder. Their progress has been tremendous, a very intense training plan was scheduled by our coaches so the players could fit this around their studies. CoreSportGib - The Gibraltar Under 17 squad have been training for over seven months I believe now, how hard has it been to keep the team going and how do you see their progress?

Moira - In every competition we aim for the Gold, which team wouldn't? It is difficult to predict in the u17s because players change every year so we don’t really

know what to expect, however the team is focussed both mentally and physically for the competition, some of them already played their first international last year in Hull as the youngest squad ever and brought home Silver. I am confident we can improve on this. CoreSportGib - You will be playing against Republic of Ireland, Switzerland and Malta in the Challenge section. How do you see Gibraltar's chances?

Moira - The NE Open Championships will follow in May for our senior squad.

We only started participating at senior level 4 years ago when we achieved International Ranking for Gibraltar so it is relatively new for us. However our coaches are already working towards UKCC accreditation in support of their work and having Scotland coaches mentor our Squad coaches and National teams is already showing progress. CoreSportGib - After this weekend you have the Open Championships in the UK in which teams from Grenade and USA will be participating too. How do you see Gibraltar's chances? and what's the importance of

seeing Gibraltar playing at this level internationally?

Moira - In 2018 Gibraltar will be hosting the NE U21s an event we are already looking forward to host.

CoreSportGib - Lastly, your team has trained hard for this championship, the event has been brought to Gibraltar, how important is it for the future of netball to have the support from the public? And what would you say to the public before the tournament starts?

Moira - I would say to the public: Come on Gibraltar we need your support get behind the team!!!

Core Photogra Team Gi On Monday night Core Photography had the privilege to take the team photo of the Under 17 Gibraltar Netball Squad. The young ladies were just that, young ladies, all ready, having ensured their hair was done, their squad outfit was elegant, the ear-rings matched, they were just what you would expect.

As luck would have it, there

was a minor hiccup, they had to wait for one of the team players who was landing from a short trip abroad and had yet not arrived due to a minor delay. It would be some 30 minutes wait, and we would have to leave for another job, and return, as so we did.

The young ladies were asked to assist in setting up because they did not wish

us, the photographers to have to delay anymore, but what they did not realise was that Core Photography, publishers of CoreSportGib, was not going anywhere because these young ladies had jumped to the instructions of their coaches, started preparing the court for the shoot and were not fussing about or acting, as many teens do, as teens, they were disciplined,

aphy Supports ibraltar working together and as a team. One young lady had jumped off a plane, raced to the court, not even gone home yet, not even really greeted her own family, and was there dressed and ready to be part of the team. If ever there was a true testament to commitment towards the team these young ladies had shown demonstrated it to us in that very short hour.

This was TEAM GIBRALTAR, and we were proud to be there and proud to take our time delivering what they required.

Forming the shots was easy, every instruction, every request was listened to and immediately responded to. So it was easy to work with such a team, and yet even with this discipline, these young ladies had something which made them special as

a team, they still maintained their youthfulness and character, and so it was easy to also work with them when liaising with the captain the team responded to one instruction for them to be themselves for that one minute.

The result was probably a shoot to remember. This is TEAM GIBRALTAR. The team to support this weekend.

Jazz CafĂŠ did not have an easy ride in their match against Mons Calpe 7, even though in the first three quarters they might have felt they had all the reasons for an easy win.

Jazz took the early lead going 6-2 ahead midway through the first quarter,

further increasing their lead to 9-3 by the end of the quarter.

Good defensive interceptions and a more determine approached to their attacks than Mons Calpe led the way for Jazz to continue into the second quarter in much

the same way at first. It was not until midway into the second quarter that the tables were turned when Jazz's defence lost their edge and Mons Calpe started taking more control of the game. Within minutes Jazz had been reduced to netting just three baskets to Mons

CoreSportgib Calpe's seven. With the latter catching up fast Jazz seemed to be sparked back into the game. The match had a more aggressive determination from both sides, with some good passing keeping both teams on their toes.

Jazz edged ahead 14-10 as they took control of the game with their linear flank attacks which were catching Mons Calpe out as players criss-crossed down the flank to find better positioning.

The third quarter was to see some dramatic moments as even the strong passing by Jazz and their continued success in gaining better positions saw them go on the back foot as Mons Calpe countered with bolder across court passing splitting the court apart.

An inspired couple of minutes, with a spectacular netted basket which had even the opponents applaud at the clean manner in which the ball had been netted pushed Mons Calpe to not only equalise, but take them into the lead for the first time.

Mons Calpe took the lead with them into the fourth and final period further increasing it momentarily. As the match wore on, so did both teams, with some scrappy passing and loose balls which kept the netting down. It was not, however, until 3 minutes were left on the clock that Jazz took back the lead once again and didn't let go of it.

Mons Calpe, who had seemed to have turned the tables on Jazz gave way and let Jazz through to victory. Jazz cafĂŠ won on the final buzzer 23-21.

Fourteen, sixteen, eighteen year olds have better things than to train three to four times a week, let alone on a Saturday, many would say, but that is the reality of Gibraltar under 14/16 &18 Women's basketball squads.

Little has as yet been heard of their endeavours. The young ladies are part of a four year development plan for women's basketball which hopes to attract more women into the sport.

They are also very much a squad which is looking at representing Gibraltar on various international fronts in the coming months. Their one common denominator is that these young ladies, with their exams, mocks, education coming up, train on a regular basis every week to ensure that they reach the levels expected of them at national level.

These young ladies proudly wore their tracksuits to

training, basketball being the one love they hoped others would appreciate.

The teams will soon see the Under 14 heading to the Canary Islands were they will be representing Gibraltar. During the summer the young ladies will be playing for Gibraltar. Some will be within the senior squad representing Gibraltar, in Gibraltar. Then teams will travel to Andorra and Georgia where they will compete in the European Cup.

By the time they reach their destination they will have undergone months of training, much in silence, except for the occasional funding raising events which brings them to the public forefront. That is until CoreSportGib walked in through the doors and saw what they were doing, thanks to their coach Kaira Sene who asked if they could have some exposure. Something we are more than willing to do as they prepare for the coming months.

Round UP

DOING IT THE HARD WAY They won their first two games by margins of under 8 points, followed this up with 2 wins in overtime and, in their latest game, just pipped Valmar Wrighttech by 2 points. Nevertheless, Mill Pharmacy Airball are the only unbeaten team in GABBA’s First Division League and, doing it the hard way, are hot favourites to win it. The Second Division looks like being a 3-horse race, with Europa B, Isolas Blue Stars Reserves and Valmar Wrighttech Reserves all straining to cross the finishing line in first place. Mons Calpe Giants are clear favourites to win the Women’s League, as are Isolas Blue Stars in the Under 14 League, both unbeaten, and with clearly little risk of being beaten. Isolas Blue Stars are also unbeaten at the head of the Under 16 League but have had a couple of narrow wins and will have to be at full strength to keep their position to the end. It’s an open race in the Under 18 League, with CS Bayside Argus and Isolas Blue Stars sharing top spot and Europa close behind.

Marred only by the second division football cup being played on the adjoining pitch which saw several balls dangerously crossing the path of the young athletes, the races saw some very competitive running.

The track even saw youngsters from the ages of four and five racing up to the Under 16's who raced last.

Grammarians the winners

The final result was written on the wall from the evening before, not the actual scoreline, but the fact Grammarians would win the cup. It was a certainty that Grammarians would win the men's hockey final. After all it was Grammarians team 1 against their team 2. The match had been hailed a success for the club even before it was played. With Grammarians now on their 65th anniversary both teams in the final was a significant achievement and testament to their historical strength in

Gibraltar hockey.

The match was to prove somewhat of a one sided affair at least score wise as Grammarians 1 went on to beat Grammarians 2 by 4-1.

The game play was somewhat different as Grammarians 1 held the dominant status during the match but having to fight for it all the way. Many a time the first team were forced to play from deep in their defence as the youngsters forced them back.

The first chance of the match came within the first few minutes when the first team struck wide.

The first goal came in the first half from a direct short corner from Shane Rammage.

The second team held on and pushed on the first team keeping the score at 1-0 until half time.

The second half started with team 2 pinning team one back, however it was their lack of finishing that let them

down. To their disappointment team one struck again when they stretched teams 2s defense leaving the left flank open. Opening the way for Kris Lacoste Luise to make it 2-0.

Grammarians two were being caught on the break and the score could have been more had it not been for the goalkeeper's bravery.

Minutes after the second Grammarians one could have scored the third had it not been Udhwani who

came out to block.

As the match wore on team two found it harder to get through. With the growing confidence of team one they struck twice more but not before team two scored. The goal coming from a defensive error that left the Angelo Santini alone on goal to score the consolation goal.

The two other goals by Grammarians came from Carl Rammage and Gabriel Benatar.

Carl himself was injured dur-

ing the game, after ball struck the side of his face. He was conveyed to hospital for treatment after leaving most of the field in shock as to the extent of the injury which saw him stop in his track and immediately call for assistance knowing it was not a minor injury.

It was nevertheless a Grammarians victory as the club took this year's trophy just a month before their big Gala Dinner dance to celebrate their 65th Anniversary.

Good choice as Dutch return Young sports boys and girls have a choice on the 21st May and it's an international choice between sports.

On the 20th and 21st may two Dutch hockey coaches will visit Gibraltar to provide coaching sessions.

On the football field the young footballers can apply for a one day coaching session, said to cost ÂŁ60 per player to be coached by former premier league legends. Not a bad choice to develop sport locally.

Good group of lads - says O’Brien Gibraltar Rugby was treated to a special visit this week with Irish back row flanker Sean O'Brien providing some professional tips to senior players during the GRFU Senior Skills session at the DTC.

Gib Rugby on Monday evening saw Sean O'Brien hosting a Q&A session at the Grand Battery House, at Casemates. The occasion was the launch of The

Gibraltar Rugby Business Network, bringing together local corporates with a love for the game.

The event was an invitation only event for paid up GRFU members/players which saw quite a few people turning up including the press.

SeĂĄn Kevin O'Brien (born 14 February 1987) is an Irish professional rugby union player from Carlow, Ireland. He plays provincial rugby for

Leinster and club rugby for UCD.

He is known for his barging runs, and ball carrying, with the IRB's Rugby News Service describing him as 'a rampaging ball of destruction. He is also known for his speed, counter rucking, and defensive tackling.

He was selected to play for the British and Irish Lions for their 2013 tour to Australia.

On 25 May 2011, O'Brien was named ERC European Player of the Year he then went on to be awarded the Guinness/Rugby Writers of Ireland player of the year has received other awards since then.

Although half an hour later than expected, and with the sun already gone, the visit to the DTC coincided with the end of the Land Rover U12’s U14's, U16's & U18's Train-

ing. It was obvious he had arrived at the grounds when everyone suddenly converged towards a corner of the pitch, at the centre, surround by youngsters, and not so young, Sean signed autographs and obliged by having his picture taken.

Just minutes after saying his farewell to the youngesters Sean was soon on the field ready to get stuck into what he was there to do, to pro-

vide some professional coaching tips to the senior players getting ready for the forthcoming tour of Asia.

It was a short half hour coaching lesson, but one in which he provided basic but fundamental tips to the players who responded well to his advise and immediately put it into practise.

Speaking after the session Sean O'brien gave the

He considered the present facilities as "good facilities" and "ideal for them at the moment", but indicated it was even better that plans existed for better facilities to be made available in the future.

Asked about his initial impressions on the players

Sean commented, "it’s a good group of lads there you can see they are all committed and try to work hard and are trying to improve and learn so it's good for Gibraltar Rugby."

Gibraltar Rugby's Chad Thomson, watching from the sidelines on this occasion when asked on Sean O'Brien's coaching session commented, "it's amazing it's great to get the latest knowl-

edge from this professional players and bringing it to Gibraltar for our lads to learn. It's fantastic. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our players to pick something up."

Further adding when asked if he would like to see more visits like this taking place that "bringing to Gibraltar some expertise will bring up the level of rugby."

Bluefin join against balloons

The Bluefin Open Water Swimming Club has joined the local organisations partnering GONHS and Lewis Pugh, Patron of the Oceans for the United Nations Environment Programme, in the campaign to end the mass release of balloons that traditionally takes place during our National Day celebrations according to Nathan Payas, one of

Bluefin members.

Payas commented in a statement posted in Facebook that "The 'Bluefins', as they often refer to themselves, feel that they have an obligation to support the 'partnership' and do as much as they can to protect the marine environment which they hold so dear. As open

water swimmers, the 'Bluefins' regularly see the effects of pollution and littering, particularly of plastic bags, through their own goggles.

"Although they agree that the event has always been one of the highlights of the celebrations which would be missed by many, they are encouraged by the thought that, if the

campaign is successful, our seas will have been kept that little bit cleaner and perhaps some marine life will have been saved. The thought of a dolphin or a sea turtle swallowing one of our balloons and dying as a result of our celebrations is one of many examples that motivate the club to speak out.

"The club looks forward to continuing working closely with other organisations to protect our waters including organising events such as clearing up litter that collects in the Port area and cleaning up the seabed at our beaches. The 'Bluefins' hope that the cleaner water will benefit not only swimmers and bathers but all of

Gibraltar’s marine fauna and flora."

Lewis Pugh, Patron of the Oceans for the United Nations Environment Programme was in a visit last week where he met with Chief Minister Fabian Picardo. He was the shown some of the work the Bluefins undertake.

The rivalry transmits down the ranks

With senior league leaders Lincoln playing Europa on Monday the intensity of the rivalry between both clubs seems to have run down the tiers, even to Junior level.

Lincoln still led the way and had already claimed their status as the dominant force. Europa are still bidding to create a rival organisation which will one day take over at all levels.

Saturday afternoon saw the rivalry at its height as two of the feeder teams for these clubs met on the field.

The Red Imps were presumed from the start to be the ones that would come out on top, even before the match. The first few minutes indicated that this would be so as they pressed forward pushing Europa back.

It was, however, Europa who struck first. A beautifully executed drive to the top far corner, well out of the reach of the keeper gave Europa the lead. There was true jubilation in the celebrations as Lincoln picked the ball from the back of the net.

The joy was not to last for long as once again another beautifully executed drive, this time from an acute angle to the left

of the goal was squarely smashed across goal, past the keeper and into the top far corner. Even the opposition coach remarked on the beauty of the goal.

Red Imps had equalised and were now driving forward. Before half time they had a further chance to score as the ball was smacked squarely against the post and bounced away from danger.

With the match at 1-1 both teams received their half time team talk. The intensity of the rivalry was evident as one coach remarked out loud to his players that "it was not good enough" whilst the other called for focus and more effort.

With some good passing, a few skilful moves, some bold creative play from players from both sides were showing evidence of being capable of being true to their role as feeder teams.

The second half ended up being a different game ball, as Lincoln did eventually dominate play as expected. The Red Imps FC U13 Argus ended up putting a further six past Europa FC U13 Green, the latter firmly at the foot of the table.

Gibraltar United faced a crucial battle for points on Sunday as they met Britannia IX, a team which has struggled to get back to their initial rhythm from the beginning of the season. With Glacis United taking three points from Manchester 62 the previous evening the bottom of the league has become an exciting hot pot of teams pressing for survival.

As the teams entered the field Gibraltar United players spoke among themselves of the importance of grabbing the three points. This very fact already highlighted the

importance the match had been given by both teams.

The first five minutes of the match saw a very nervous looking Gibraltar United play tightly in defence but wasting many passes. Britannia for their part seemed more composed in their approach, holding the ball and playing short safe passes from defence into the midfield. However, even in this first five minutes Britannia showed a lack of capacity to make get any effective crosses or passes to their front line to threaten Goldwyn's goal.

As Gibraltar United begun to settle down, they started playing crosses to their flanks and front men which begun to show some effect as they started reaching the edge of Britannia's penalty area.

It was in one of this long ball crosses to the wings that Jared found himself chasing a ball with only Barnfather to beat. As the Britannia keeper decided to make the long run to outside the penalty box to clear, Jared arrived before him and lobbed the ball high over the keeper, floating it into the back of the goal for the 1-0. The small

r United take three points in battle to Gibraltar United contingent of supporters rose to their feet for a standing ovation at the execution of the goal. Gibraltar United opted to defend their lead from the back and started to allow Britannia to take possession of the ball, passing and controlling from the back. Britannia, however found themselves facing a tightly knitted defence that is now used to the constant barrage of attacks. They had little to no effective penetration with the only read save made by Goldwyn coming close to the

20th minute when his own defender in an attempt to clear at the edge of his box struck the ball firmly towards the far post. Goldwyn lunged to save, getting a hand to in to put it for a corner.

Gibraltar United maintained their defensive posture and relied on deep counters against what Britannia defence that looked vulnerable at times.

It was in one of this counters that Gibraltar United put together a string of quick one time passes across the length of the left flank, with a final ball swung in to the

frontline. Three Gibraltar United players found themselves by the edge of the box with only Barnfather to beat. Evans was first to the ball, controlling with his chest as he calmly rounded the oncoming Barnfather to slot in the second.

Gibraltar United went off for half time leading by 2-0 in what was turning out to be a disastrous performance for Britannia.

The second half started with Britannia short of two men as they substituted players, a na誰ve Gibraltar United held back from taking advantage

CoreSportgib as the match kicked off without the changes having been made due to a delay to the annoyance of Gibraltar United forward Montovio who shouted at his players to play forward. Instead seeing the ball played back and out for the changes.

Britannia pressed forward during the second half but once again found themselves with little opportunities to find the target. Gibraltar United were the more threatening of the two sides with their quick counter attacks using Montovio as their pivotal front man.

As the half wore on Gibraltar United started to push further up field causing further problems to Britannia who saw Barnfather having to palm out a ball on target after Montovio broke through the flanks and crossed for a shot at goal from Evans.

It was not until five minutes were left on the clock that Goldwyn was really called into action. A curled freekick to the near post saw Goldwyn having to stretch to push the ball for a corner.

Gibraltar United held on to record a further victory which sees them taking a further three points from mid table opponents, in what could be a crucial time of the season for them.

Rain, Rain go away

If it was entertainment you wanted St Joseph's clash with Lions had little on offer. The most notable talking points had little to do with the football, and more to do with the off the pitch events and the official's performance some would say.

Just an hour and a half before the match started the Under 15 Lions match had been abandoned as a sudden (well not that sudden as it had been forecast) downpour flooded the pitch leaving officials no other choice than to stop the match. With 45 minutes to

go before the match the stands were empty except for two women who had travelled all the way from Jerez to watch their sons play for St Joseph's. The women were optimistic the match would go on, but they seemed to be the only ones. They had received after all a Whatsup saying it was still on, even though no official had yet arrived at the stadium to decide.

Just 50m down the road, at the Tercentenary Sports Hall reception area Lions players arrived to attend to their prematch briefing. An odd event, but with obvious

reasons as to why it was not taking place in the changing room. The Lions coach had received a three match ban after he was send off in Lion's previous match. The briefing was to see the announcement that third choice national keeper, who had been sidelined by the two teams he had played for this season, was to get his first First division action of the season. Neale was to play in the starting eleven due to an injury to the Lions Polish first choice keeper.

With just 25 minutes to go before the match the first signs that the match would

go on emerged as first choice national keeper Jordan Perez warmed up with his goalkeeping coaches before the two teams entered the pitch for their warm up. The match was to go on but the rain was just not going away as the downpour turned to a big never-ending drizzle.

The match started with both St Joseph's and Lions highlighting that this was going to be a mid table clash where both teams would see little opportunities to score as the macth centred very much in midfield.

The first incursions by St Joseph's into Lions area which ended in corners were to be one of the turning points of the half as the Saints coach realised that Neale was still a bit rusty and had some problems leaving his line on corner kicks. The shouting for his team to pressure him in corners worked. With 39 minutes into the match, and neither team yet having a clear opportunity, a corner kick was floated to the near post. Neale remained on his line as the ball was headed back to goal by Cortijo floating over Lions defence

which was put under further pressure by the presence of Duran by the goal line.

Cortijo's ball bounced between defenders standing in the way of Neale and dropped into the back of the net for the first goal. Neale had little chance to get to the ball before it had crossed over the line.

As the half ended Lions sought the equaliser. Gines collected at the edge of the penalty area and drove a power shot to the far post. Perez dived for a superb save for a corner. Perez had seen more action in the

morning as he attended to minor fire incidents that he had seen during the first half.

The second half started with Lions pressing forward and tensions increasing between the two. The tensions reached their height when Sala reacted to a St Joseph's Morlan late kick to the back of the leg. Sala stepped forward facing off the Saints player. His head to head with Morlan was lucky to not see more than the yellow card given.

3rd March 2016

Lions had a spate of good chances. Lata, who had been causing St Joseph's defence a few problems became a key player in Lions attack. His power incursion into St Joseph's area, powering past three defenders was only by a Perez save from scoring.

A few minutes later a freekick curled into the area and saw three lions player miss striking it before the ball was kicked on target, Once again Perez saving.

Lions soon went a man

down as St Joseph's countered and saw Rodriguez trip a saints player en route to goal. The second yellow resulting in a red. A harsh decision to make, but one which the official was forced to make as the player was the last in the line of defence.

St Joseph's were found wanting as they did not capitalise on the man advantage, leaving Lions to have the most possession. A shot at goal from the edge of the box once again saw Perez in action. Lions

equalised from the subsequent corner kick as the ball was floated in for Martin to push it in.

As Lions continued to hold possession St Joseph's Gomez Torres (Borja) found himself chasing a long ball forward. As Neale stepped out Borja struck the ball past his right to the top corner of the goal making it 2-1.

St Joseph's with a man advantage on the field showed very little in way of keeping possession. Lions, who had difficulties in finding

clear chances prior to the red card, although getting to the second third of the pitch kept on having the same problems.

The game had little more to speak about expect the continued calls from Lions supporters and their assistant coach for the officials to change their decisions. At one time the main official had to warn the bench, and assistant coach for the continued remarks against officials by the touchline.

Lions tired towards the end of the match, leaving St Joseph's to pick up the points.

The match which saw the first choice and third choice keepers of the national team also highlighted the need to protect local players. Neale's absence from first team football saw the young man rusty in many areas, his confidence growing as the match went on. His lack of first team football very much a factor in his performance.

nx's asy win

CoreSportgib

3rd March 2016

Football is a complex world surrounding a simple game at best, and in Gibraltar it is no different.

Gibraltar's complexity in football transcends beyond the touchline. On Saturday any person waiting to get the Number Two bus to the Upper Town area would have been met by the smile of a young man, who was going about his daily work as normal. The only difference being that that day he was on the Upper town route. The young man was none other than Edmund Hosken, the owner of Angels FC. A team that had suddenly appeared out of now where, won promotion to the first division and in the last few months has seen a sudden change in its prospects.

Just two months ago Angels were very much considered the whipping boys. As the league enters the third round Angels are turning heads with their performances, although yet not collecting rewards for their efforts. Much mystery surrounds the team that changed a whole squad overnight. Former players allege that they had no previous warning than the response they received on the last day of the transfer window that their services were no longer required. The owner himself commented that the new squad were old friends who had come to assist him. When asked this weekend on one of his

players he refused to comment. A simple question such as "how old is your keeper has he played before?" received a starchy response of "how am I supposed to know how old all my players are or where they have played," the usually amicable Edmunds, followed by his new friends who come to watch the matches every week having little to say and very reluctant to say anything.

Angels were nevertheless a team which has set a few eyebrows twitching. Where some teams had believed that Angels were an easy three points, recent performances have shown that they are no longer to be believed to be so.

Although defeated 2-1 Angels left a stamp of their intent by demonstrating that they are not the easy pickings they used to be. Angels attacked from the start, putting Lynx on the back foot during long periods of the match.

Lynx did possess the greater control of the match yet their game plan once again seemed to lack that edge to create goal opportunities. It was not until around the 30th minute that Lynx broke through in their clearest chance with Santos ensuring he finished it off for the 1-0.

For the next five minutes Angels seemed to hang back and let Lynx settle in and

3rd March 2016 control play, growing in confidence as they did.

Angels however had other plans and soon snapped out of their gloomy cloud and buoyed by their new found confidence pushed Lynx back into their own area. Selva was the first to miss a chance to equalise as he skewed the ball wide. Mena came next as Robba's goal was bombarded forcing two corners. From one of them Mena had a chance to equalise with only Robba to beat, but finding himself with his back to goal on turning he gave time to get blocked.

The first half finished with Robba punching one of his posts in frustration at the manner Lynx had allowed Angels back into the game.

Angels started the second half pressing forward pinning Lynx back into their area. They nevertheless had few opportunities to equalise, instead it was Lynx who had the clearest chance in the first few minutes to score. A header struck to the ground in front of an open goal for an easy clearance.

Lynx brought on Doxagarat who was to prove himself a menace for Angels. In one of his first actions he run into Angels area, sidestepping the defender and striking a curled shot which was superbly saved by Filoho for a corner.

Angels soon launched another of their runs deep into Lynx

half. A cross to the middle was badly cleared by Lynx's Villegas Mena who send to ball back to the wrong side of Robba for the equaliser.

Angels joy was soon to be deflated as Lynx were sparked back into action realising they could lose crucial points.

Doxagarat was to prove a shrewd substitution when on one of his sweeping runs saw him once again side step the defender and goalkeeper Filoho to strike the ball sweetly past the far post for the winner.

Albert Parody has just walked past through the main gate leaving the bench when the goal happened.

Lynx maintained their momentum looking for the third but it was not to be. Lynx had taken the points but had been forced to play it out until the last minute.

It was a bitter sweet victory for Lynx, who had finally taken three points from a match but had found themselves on the backfoot against the bottom of the league table club. Those who are not aware of the progress of Angels would easily criticise Lynx for their performance. Yet it was a well earned hard fought victory, against an opposition which is likely to prove an obstacle to many other teams if their performances continue to lift their confidence as they seem to be doing.

A team that faltered in defence, feared passing and expressed so much vulnerability in their play that teams were crucifying them, has suddenly found it confidence. Not only have Glacis shown that they can now attack and score, their midfield play, passing movements and changes from counter acting defensive gameplan to controlling the midfield through the use of a solid defensive "brick wall" in defence as given them a new life.

Manchester for their part has seen their fortunes change, but not as much as their opponents this weekend. Their new manager has brought in a new determination, and a new belief which is clearly seen in their defensive confidence.

The Manchester v Glacis clash had an intensity of a cup tie from the start. Both teams vying for the points to keep them save.

Manchester started dominating possession from the start with simple passing making Glacis chase.

The tactic worked as they moved closer and closer to Glacis area. Within the first ten minutes Pecino put one past Glacis keeper for the 1-0.

Glacis were undeterred showing from the start they were relying on their quick counters to put pressure on Manchester. A fact which as the match progressed was to be proven to be a well founded confidence.

The match went into a phase in which the play was centred in the middle third of the pitch. Manchester holding men back and

not chasing whilst Glacis tried to press forward unsuccessfully.

Manchester were effectively stopping Glacis supply of crosses to their danger man Sastrie who was being kept an eye on by two defenders when he did get the ball. Sastries was to prove himself a slippery subject and posed the greatest threat to Manchester's defence. On the half hour a through ball saw him outrun the defence and round off the keeper to push it in with ease for the equaliser.

3rd March 2016

With neither team dominating, the match transcended into a physicality which saw the ref show several yellow cards to stamp it out.

Manchester were slow in supporting forward runs, lacking the determination to go for a winning goal. Instead quick counters were seen to fall flat as the attacking player had to hold back the ball to wait for support, many a time the support only coming when the Glacis defence had already positioned itself.

The last ten minutes of the first half saw Manchesters defence the more active as they repelled Glacis attacks. A solid defensive line kept Glacis out with the first half finishing 1-1.

The clearest signs that Glacis were finding their pace, whilst Manchester was beginning to lose it was now showing.

The second half started with Manchester pushed back deep as Glacis had two clear chances saved by keeper Macedo.

Minutes later Sastrie run down the right and shot across goal.

Manchester had a couple of occasions to reach penalty area, first with Mikey cutting through Glacis before putting to Toncheff, who was alone on goal only to let himself be caught by the defenders. Mikey then had the glare of his coach when a cross he could have jumped to head to goal was allowed to go over his head and easily cleared.

Glacis soon returned to the

attack. Keeper Macedo was forced to make a good save from a shot from number Sastrie who run into the area beating the defence in the run once again.

Minutes later another cross into the path of Sastrie saw him put it past Manchester for the 2-1 for Glacis, but not without him getting knocked on the head as he did.

Facebook might have highlighted that it was Jack Sergants birthday on Saturday but it seems nobody had told Barletta,

Sastrie and Nunez whose deep runs, deep crosses and through balls were causing misery to Manchester's defence time and time again.

Soon after his second goal Sastrie then had an open chance after a long pass from inside Glacis area went over the defence leaving him free. His finish was much to be desired putting the ball well wide of the two posts.

Glacis were getting the upper hand on Manchester who failed to get into the last

3rd March 2016 third of the area. Glacis instead had several good chances to break through, not taking them. Many coming from Manchester's own errors in passing in defence. It was the lack of finishing by Glacis front men that did not see Manchester end up like Brunos Magpies encounter with Glacis which saw them putting away everything they could throw forward.

Manchester when attacking were complicating themselves looking for the difficult routes which were cut off by Glacis. They were losing balls in the centre and slow in countering which saw their coach vociferously calling on their team to put some urgency and thought into their play. Manchester still had time to grab the game back but their attempts at incursions into Glacis half were met by a solid brick wall of a defence who were not scared to pump the ball forward and let their front men run after it.

Sastrie continued to terrorise the Manchester defence breaking through the middle. Just after laying a ball first controlled on the chest to see the shot by his colleague saved. He then received another cross through the middle and calmly controlled and put past Macedo who had no chance for the 3-1.

Seconds later he found himself chasing another cross this time Macedo got there first to clear with his feet.

Minutes later number Barletta run down flank whilst Sastrie found space behind the defence. His half volley going over the bar.

Manchester could not respond to Glacis counters and speed.

As the match neared its last ten minutes Manchester were met time and again against the brick wall defence and a Glacis growing in confidence as Sastrie, Barletta and Nunez continued to terrorise their rivals. Clean break through crosses, eloquent touches and skilful play playing rings around Manchester. Glacis were playing pleasing football and looking for more goals. Glacis failing to increase their score in the finishing.

Many a neutral watching the match, including some avid Lincoln supporters could not help but exclaim at the progress Glacis had made in recent weeks, and praising their game style and victory. The same indicating that teams should now reconsider what they thought of Glacis after seeing the devastating effects of Glacis attacks on their opponents.

3rd March 2016

CoreSportgib This was always going to be a classic, the two top teams of the league had their pride to play for even if eight points separated them before the match started.

Lincoln were already on the back foot even before first whistle blew. With several players injured their line up included players who were not considered by many as match fit for such a clash. A factor which later on in the evening was commented on by a Lincoln player as he walked to the changing rooms following the defeat.

Europa for their part also had injuries within their line-up but the they seemed to have the fitter of the two teams.

The intensity of the match was clear to see from the very kick off. Both teams battled for possession, but it was Europa who had the upper hand throughout most of the match. Lincoln were held back and uncharacteristically relied on their defence to stay in the match as they lost possession of the midfield. A solid defensive display by Europa kept Lincolns chances of goal to a minimum, with only two clear cut chances in the whole of the second half when they most needed it that reach the target. The battle for the control of the midfield was clearly swayed in Europa's favour as they won back balls and grew in confidence.

The turning point of the game came early. Europa opened the score early in the match when Mendez picked up the ball outside the penalty area and thundered it low past the defence to goal. An outstretched Navas unable to get his fingertips to the ball. The Europa bench rose in celebration as they smelled the first signs of victory. Unlike other matches the crowd rose and

cheered with over 350 fans on the stands on the night. After the incidents in the last match Europa had warned their fans as to what was expected from them so as not to incur a further ÂŁ800 fine, or even a six point deduction as had been mooted at first.

Buoyed by the early goal Europa continued to look for the second goal pushing on Lincoln's defence and shutting down the attempts for a break to goal by Lincoln's front me. Lincoln had tried to respond to the goal but found themselves

effectively shut down by a confident defensive display starting in midfield, which lasted for the rest of the match.

The second half started much the same way with a high intensity game which saw some sparks flying on the pitch. This time, however, the officials stamped their authority producing several yellow cards on the trot when the kicks started flying and the game looked like heading to its known conflicts of the past, such is the rivalry between the two teams.

Even the fourth official was kept on his feet making his presence known on the touchline at every opportunity tensions looked like flaring up.

Lincoln had a good spell halfway down the second half in which they took control for a while of the midfield and attacked in their now traditional fast paced flank moves to put pressure on Europa's defence. However, their final delivery and their well known bold crosses from flank to flank to change the direction of play was cut off with ease by

Europa's defence who seemed ready for these. The latter soon responded by pressing even harder and cutting down the opportunities for Lincoln to play their passing game and turned the heat back on with their own runs through the flanks and middle.

Europa begun again to take possession of the game, with a string of quick short passes keeping possession and looking at ways to reach the target as Lincoln defended from deep and chased the game. Although Lincoln seemed to be

playing well below their normal standards, Europa failed in produce to many attempts on goal themselves.

Their insistence of playing into the area rather than finding the target saw them held back from threatening the goal too often.

Lincoln's defence put their heads down, quite literally, and focused on getting the ball back. Roy Chipolina's semi-hunched back posture, eyes focused on the ball and player approach to obtain the ball many a time resulted

on Europa's attacks getting cleared before they reached the edge of the box.

Chipolina had a scare early in the second half as he blocked a shot just metres from the goalmouth and saw the ball bounce of him past the outside of the post to a beaten Navas.

Even Lincoln's midfield were pulled back in support of the defence to protect outside the penalty area at times.

Europa's pressure, nevertheless, paid off when on the 73rd minute Leiva

3rd March 2016 broke free on the right and raced into the box with the ball. As Navas came out Leiva struck with powerful low drive into the back of the net, giving the keeper little chance to block.

Europa now 2-0 ahead continued to look for a third as their fans pushed them on. Lincoln found themselves for the first time this season defending their goal as they found themselves unable to push through Europa's brick wall defence. Most of the possession ended at Europa's feet as time and again Lincoln were dispossessed as they attempted to go forward.

With a 2-0 victory at the end of the match Europa reduced the deficit between the two to just five points giving themselves some hope towards their ultimate goal of winning the league. Although even Europa supporters were not as optimistic, the drama played out on the field on Monday night had everyone rising to their feet. "If every match was like this" exclaimed one of the coaches of the junior sides of Europa, "then I would come to every single match this season, we would have nothing to reproach the premier league, this was a classic." In a similar tone photographers and supporters were quick to

compare the match to the "el clasico," although with none of the superstar studded line-ups, the Europa v Lincoln Red Imps is the derby of Gibraltar where Europa are bidding to take over the champions status Lincoln have held for so long.

As Europa celebrated with all their players, even some of the youth teams, gathered on the pitch Lincoln players left the field, many with their heads hanging down. As the water was sprayed in the air the remarks from Lincoln players still demonstrated some shrugged shoulders contempt for Europa's victory with comments such as "do they think they have won the league." Although still league leaders and unlikely to lose the points which would see Europa take first place, the pride of winning and losing this encounter was on par to playing the final of the cup and losing to their bitter rivals.

The mini league between Europa and Lincoln ended in both teams getting equal points from each other. However, it is the presence in the Champions League qualifiers that is the ultimate trophy and with few teams showing an ability to beat Lincoln the five point gap spells the end of Europa's bid for that trophy.

CoreSportGib is a digital weekly sports news publication for Gibraltar. It is published on a weekly basis and can be read online, or offline using the Issuu.com digital publishing platform.

CoresportGib is a publication created by Core Photography who have been actively dedicated as photojournalist in Gibraltar since the launch of our service in early 2014.

As part of our service we launched www.corephotographygibr altar.com, our image collection online service

Over 5,000 unique users every month return to our site on nearly a daily basis, and with over 250,000 page views a month the photographic collection has become a mainstream media information service for many users.

Recently Core Photography opted to divert its attention from main stream news to sports recognizing the need to fill a gap in the

market in which sports reporting was limited in Gibraltar.

The success of our Coresport galleries led us to seek new forms of keeping readers informed on sports news stories. This led us to the creation of a weekly digital review magazine, CORESPORTGIB

We have since refocused our objectives and Core Photography's services have been aligned to provide a full sports coverage through its various platforms, moving away from main stream everyday political news to sports news.

We are exclusively dedicated to Sports news coverage and reporting.

The digital publication itself can be viewed through three different platforms, allowing readers to choose their preferred option.

The main publication which allows for hyperlinks within adverts will be uploaded to our issuu.com/coresportgib platform. Providing a

unique reader experience where traditional magazine reading meets digital technology.

The magazine can also be read on multiple mobile devices, desktop and offline. It can even be printed if you prefer to read it on paper.

We provide options for the magazine to be downloaded in full.

The page spreads are also available at our Facebook page at Coresportgib as one of our image albums which will allow readers to share, comment, download, save or basically do as they generally do when interacting with social media.

Being a part of Core Photography, which has its own website www.corephotographygibr altar.com, the digital magazine will also see the page spreads published online as part of our online collections.

What does all this mean to you the advertiser?

Simply speaking Core

Photography has created and is developing further a way of targetting the sports community, and groups associated to, actively participating or have a part in sports in Gibraltar.

These community has few boundaries except the sports itself.

They come from all walks of life, all political sectors, workplaces and social structures.

Sports is the one place where you can have a company director mixed with public servants or any mix of genders, social groupings with little to differentiate them between each other.

Most sportsmen and women in Gibraltar are dedicated to their sport but come from other fields of work. They work, buy, shop, travel, buy property, could be running a small company or even a large corporation. The one thing that brings them together is sport.

For the advertiser this is a perfect avenue through which to target a global market which in itself has a multitude of smaller target audiences which can be reached.

It means that there is also now a publication which

does not rely on political news stories, or headline news to attract a large social group.

Sportsmen and women, like everyone else, like to read about themselves, their clubs or associations and their own sport.

Relatives and friends like to read about their loved ones achievements.

Sports enthusiasts like to keep up with what is happening.

This is where CoreSportGib comes in, it provides this service to our readers, and therefore creates for you the advertiser that unique target audience you might want to attract.

In the near future Coresportgib will spread its distribution even further as it seeks to widen its market and reach new audiences interested in Gibraltar related sports stories.

Our stats show that since the launch of CoreSportGib as a digital publication it has been growing in readership every week, with every publication in our archives increasing in readership weeks after as well.

We have at present an average of 1900 readers

for the magazine alone on our issuu.com/coresportgib platform. With stats showing that over 45% do more than just flick through the pages.

We acknowledge that many readers will just read titles and look at the images, however, that is why we focus our attention on images and layouts, not just stories.

Our presence in Facebook also sees over our reach increased with anything from 1500 - 6,000 users reached at any given week.

Our objective is not to provide hyped up stats saying we have 18,000 or even 100,000 likes as likes do NOT provide evidence of readership just that someone has clicked on the like button at some stage when they have viewed your page.

Instead we seek to reach as high a number of readers as we can. Our main aim is to create an organic readership base which comes back to read us every week and whose loyalty will generate its own organic increase in the readership.

A happy reader is a valueable reader to both us and YOU THE ADVERTISER.

Special Olympics beat New Saints click here to see full gallery collection in our website

CoreSportgib Saturday would see Lynx face St Joseph in what was to be the clash of the day for the first division leadership, but once again CoreSportGib had decided that it was time to look at the lower divisions, the forgotten teams.

The 3pm clash between Special Olympics and New Saints Team sounded interesting purely knowing that Special Olympics had had proven to be a solid team in previous matches observed.

What few realise is that the Special Olympics Futsal team is the only team in Special Olympics playing in a UEFA based league. More importantly, keeping with the Special Olympics ethos, the team restricts it's own team to follow the Special Olympics policies on who plays. Even though they are not required to do so under GFA rules, Special Olympics has decided that they would follow their own procedures in selection to develop the team further.

New Saints Team, were not that new, made up of veteran St Jospeh's players with Spencer Hanglin clearly the conductor of the gameplay, as was demonstrated during the match.

The New Saints Team were also to prove themselves as the experienced physically stronger team and on the day, at least when it came to tactical play in the first half.

Special Olympics went one down very early on, with New Saints showing why some of their players were once among the elite once upon a time ( a long time for some).

New Saints compensated for their lack of pace through physicality, control of possession and very determined play. Special Olympics were the faster of the two teams, however even striding forward Special Olympics found it hard to get close to the Saints area with ease to pose any real threat during the first half. Spencer making sure his team was performing in the manner he was dictating and controlling from the back.

Although they were no match against the Special Olympics pace New Saints Team had far more shots on target which required the keeper to pull out some great saves.

It was not until the start of the second half Special Olympics pulled one back to equalise. The veterans lost their momentum and begun to struggle as their tired legs also started to show.

As time wore on so did New Saints legs. Their pace slowed as Special Olympics increased in intensity. Within minutes Special Olympics went ahead. A third brilliantly executed drive saw Special Olympics take control with a two goal lead.

New Saints were then involved in a series of tough

CoreSportgib tackles which saw Special Olympics rattled. However just as soon as it started it ended with Special Olympics putting five more past for the 6-1 each goal saw New Saints deflated further as they came crushing down.

Lynx met st Joseph

Although the Old Victoria Stadium sports hall has none of the presence of the tercentenary Sports Hall, the match saw the grittiness of old style football played. Lacking the pace of the first division, and maybe even some of the intensity which sees the officials accosted so often, the match was an exciting affair between two very differently styled teams. Importantly the very essence of the match demonstrated that the Special Olympics were as respected as any other team and treated as any other team. Even to the point that some of the tackling from New Saints raised many eyebrows and many reactions from Special Olympics players, but were just as easily brushed aside as part of the game by New Saints oldies.

The battle for top spot of the Futsal league saw Lynx confront st Joseph in what was a very tense and physical match.

There was little to split both teams apart. With both teams playing a tough tackling far which kept the score at 1-1 into the second half. The officials playing a key part in trying to keep the game under control.

Both teams had at stake top spot as the points gained on this match were the equivalent of a six pointer. This in itself was enough initiative to prompt both teams to keep their focus and intensity throughout.

The match ended with neither team taking maximum points, a three-all draw benefitting St Hoseph who continue leading the pack in the first division.

Football - Lincoln's injury problems will persist

Lincoln Red Imps latest problems on the field have been directly linked to a current spate of injury problems which exists within the team. At least five players are carrying injuries which could see them affected for the next few weeks as the players come back to full fitness.

A lack of investment into the squad to replace players that

have left has seen the problems aggravated according to informed sources, which has led to players not having adequate match fit or league ready replacements.

At least one player is believed to have played on Monday against Europa after spending two days ill in bed, whilst another, namely Liam Walker, has only just returned to the playing field after prolonged period of absence. He is described as indicating that he was playing on "empties" when he was replaced during the Europa match, this being the first time he had lined up in the first team since the end of the transfer window.
