GFA understood to have asked for due diligence to be met Angels this weekend shocked Gibraltar's small football world, and left it with rumours spinning around like wildfire, rumours which have shown no clear signs of disappearing as the intrigue over how and where 13 players arrived and the intentions of new alleged investors, at the time of publication publicly unknown figures, into what is a club struggling to survive in the first division.

Rumours that Angels had bought onboard up to five Brazilians were denied to Coresportgib, when owner Hoskens was asked directly claiming that he had called upon friends to come and help him out when they found out that his team was in trouble.

Speaking to Coresport before the match Hosken dismissed that any of the players were a

new investment or even of any merit to report on.

Coresportgib caught up with Angels President Edmund Hosken, when asked to comment on the changes of players and rumours of investors Edmunds said, " Yes I have eleven new players all friends who are helping me out. They saw I was having a bad time and they have come to help me out," as he denied that there were any investors who had brought in new players into the team. Asked on the investors Edmonds said "In the future there might be an investor but not yet we have to wait and see." His comments came just hours after reports emerged of several people expected to be part of the Angels team would not be allowed to be pitch side as essential paperwork required by the GFA had not arrived, and were therefore

not considered a part of the coaching team, or players a fact which following some research on at least one of the players leads to some interesting contradictions on the players origins. The player in question having a record worthy of reporting on. Angels have made changes, a total of 13 changes from the team that started the season in the first division. The only survivors in the team being , Villada Morente (c), Larouia, Bernal and Arroyal. On Saturday CoreSportGib was informed that there were only eleven changes, yet the line ups from September to November show otherwise when compared to the team lined-up on Saturday. CoreSportGib understands that eleven new players were registered on the very last days of the transfer deadline.

11th February 2016 Coresportgib also understands that persons who were to stand by the pitchside were on Saturday denied doing so after records and paperwork required by the GFA had as yet not arrived. The same people were believed to be at least two players, coaching staff and new alleged investors.

Instructions were given to not allow these persons on the bench during the match by the GFA as the paperwork was as yet not in order. A group of around five people were seen moving to the stand, three of them very much active participants in the organisation, formation and playing factors of Angels during the match as they provided their instructions to the bench from the stands. All of them very much persons who had been frequently seen at the stadium together watching other first division matches in recent days with Angels FC President Edmonds Hosken alongside.

The group seemed to be coaching those standing by the touchline in what to say and what formations or changes to make. Something which was very clear to see just one aisle away from them.

Coresportgib understands that the Gibraltar Football Association has raised eyebrows over the changes

being seen within the Angels FC club, and directly enquired as to the club affairs and changes, as they are required to do. The issues were brought before the club President and have since seen the GFA highlight and advise that UEFA regulations, and GFA regulations are met by the club with all due diligence requirements met before approval can be given for the active participation of the persons who are believed to be behind the new investment into the club and any new coaching staff. Coresportgib further understands that at the time of writing no officially endorsed approval has as yet been granted with the process still ongoing. There is no evidence, however, that there is any wrongdoing at the moment. The only issue of concern being the delay in the completion of the due diligence process as required which has further fanned the speculation among observers of the game.

Even though the prospect of investors was denied to CoreSportgib, and is yet to materialise depending of the completion of the paperwork being finalised, even more interesting was the fact that at least one player, from the "friends" who have joined the club has shown up as someone whose career makes him more than just a mere friend with nothing to report on.

Goalkeeper Filoho Welerson Ribeiro Dias wrote in his own facebook profile "Good afternoon friends and family, very happy because this month To hit with the club "Angels fc" of gibaltrar .. A country in the UK . What is within Spain. And today first run for the championship .. Very happy .. And once again football providing good things and different cultures."

Filoho, nicknamed El Gigante, is a 44 year old Brazilian with EU Passport whose playing career stretches back to the Brazilian league in 1993, and recently saw him taking up a

11th February 2016 role as Goalkeeper player-coach at Al Wasl FC, one of the United Arab Emirates top first division clubs. His playing career saw him play in Fluminense, Americano, Ituano, Juventude (with whom he played in the Copa Libertadores), Olaria, Coritiba, America, Sampaio CorrĂŞa and Gondomar (Portugal). Having gone through most of the division in Brazil and played in the second division in Portugal. Wellerson has been coaching goalkeepers for Fluminense, America, Sendas and recently Al Wasl (UAE). The goalkeeper is no lightweight, his experience clearly showing during the match against Gibraltar United when he completed several crucial saves and showed confidence under the bar in a match that even before the changes in line-up were publicly known already had Angels put down at 40/1 to win against Gibraltar United's 2/1 by some foreign betting companies.

The whole squad similarly showed that they were not the same type of players that had been picked from a group of friends alone. A well disciplined, well formed, structured play showed signs of players with experience in league football, at least at a level comparable to that in Gibraltar. Angels were a transformed side, yet the questions over how the changes have come about not only leaves Gibraltar football under intrigue, it has also raised serious questions on how easy a team failing in the league can suddenly change a whole outfit and bring in foreigners to fill in all the gaps under the present registration criteria. Although Angels was already a team without any Gibraltarian players, it is the very fact that an all foreign player squad has replaced an all foreign player squad overnight. Now it's just a matter of time to see how far the changes do affect the league and whether the 11 ( or 13 or 15) changes will have any impact whatsoever against bigger opponents. Angels next match is a Rock Cup round 2 match against second division Pheonix. The

Rock Cup is now becoming the prestigious reward all teams are looking for as Lincoln steam ahead in the league making it difficult for others to see the league as a realistic option. However, CoreSportGib understands that under the present UEFA regulations on European competition licence Angels is unlikely to meet any such licence requirements under its present structure due to its lack of youth football, reserve football and infrastructure which would require stringent criteria to be met for them to qualify to participate in European competitions if they were to by chance reach the final, something that few believed possible at the end of the year. For the club to meet UEFA requirements they would need to make a major infrastructural change with a huge investment even before contemplating submitting for application. This in itself means that the rewards from the Rock Cup itself are not considered by observers as the incentive which would initially lead to a huge investment into a struggling club. However this leaves teams playing against Angels more concerned over their prospects of getting through to the next round, Angels no longer being the push over team they were when beaten 13-0 by Lincoln just a few weeks ago.

What is certain is that the surprise package on Saturday has not only opened intrigue in Gibraltar's football world, highlighting many concerns and raising many eyebrows, even if there is no evidence of any wrongdoing. It has also led to officials highlighting the importance of vigilance within the sport and of the possibility of revising regulations which would stop similar scenarios from re-emerging. On the other side of the coin it also probably means that some fortunate punter who might have gambled on Angels winning probably had a good day, as even the betting statisticians at the stadium were caught out by the new line-up and what it meant to the game. One wonders if anyone did actually put a bet on Angels winning on the day, let's hope for their sake it was not a mere quid.

arents attending junior football matches this weekend were surprised to see GSLA staff members call upon the referees to stop matches when planes were landing and departing, raising complaints amongst them over the reasons as to why this was happening.

The stoppages did not just affect junior matches, it also included women's league matches and training sessions on the small pitches.

Coresportgib understands that the decision to stop matches was taken after consultation with the RAF who had highlighted the dangers of

4th February 2016

continued presence of footballs across the runways, posing problems to aircraft. A decision was made to stop all activity on the pitches whilst aircraft activity was present in order to reduce the risk.

Speaking to Coresportgib Minister Steven Linares explained that he was fully aware of the situation and sympathised with those affected. He, however, pointed out that it was a matter of assessing the risks and prioritising the safety of passengers.

The Minister, further explained to Coresportgib that the situation was a temporary measure which had been put in place after consultation

with the RAF, and after agreement that indeed there had been a substantial increase in the use of the small pitches which provided the potential for a risk of balls falling onto the runway. Although junior football was not considered as much of a risk, a decision had been taken to remove all risks whilst a solution was sought to remedy the problem.

According to the Minister, who was at the Victoria Stadium on Saturday a solution had already been found, costed and awaiting delivery. With consultation with the MOD/RAF, a safety net was to be put in place above the ground which would prevent balls from going over the fence. A half pitch netting, securely

fitted to the specifications required to ensure the safety of users and aircraft would be installed within the coming weeks. This would allow for the pitches to be used again as normal.

The Minister also pointed out that whilst space was still at a premium in Gibraltar, there was a growing need for more facilities and that his ministry was actively seeking to increase the number of facilities available. The use of the Cepsa Petrol station, once the east side road is complete is seen as a further solution to decrease the use of the smaller pitches and return them to their original purpose as training pitches if necessary.

Gibraltar Rugby Select XV provided ample proof that rugby in Gibraltar has a good future ahead with a convincing win over visiting Jersey Rugby Association Select XV. Victoria Stadium saw itself turned from what is normally a football stadium on a Saturday to a celebration of Rugby this Saturday. As from 12 youth teams practised in exhibition matches which allowed the young players to get a taste of playing at Victoria Stadium. As two o'clock approached the stadium received a new boost of energy as both visiting fans and local rugby fans gathered to partly fill up the main stand, in what was a good turnout considering the short notice in announcing the event. The match started with Gibraltar Rugby imposing their authority over jersey from the very start. Within minutes Loddo had run the ball over the line for the first try, which was easily converted for the first seven points. A lack of concentration having gone 7-0 up so quickly saw Jersey take advantage with a deer run to the line catching Gibraltar out of position to bring the match back to a level score line. This was the last of Jersey's scoring chances as Gibraltar upped its game with fierce tackling, some of which saw the crowd stand and applause. There was little to dispute Gibraltar's dominance over the match as they started to accumulate tries leaving Jersey well behind in the score line. A well disciplined Gibraltar side maintained the pressure throughout looking to increase their tally to the delight of the crowd. A 51-7 score line highlighting the depth in strength of the Gibraltar Rugby Select XV who ensured that they proved their worth in front of their home crowd. The afternoon of rugby was not over as the veterans took to the field for the closing match. With most of the main crowd now gone, the match was far quieter affair between two sides who were competitive in nature but far more relaxed over the overall score line which went in favour of Jersey 17-5. Following the match Coresportgib caught up with Minister Steven Linares who had been present during the match. The minister highlighted that the proposed rugby pitches at Europa Point were to become a reality with talks over their use already well underway.

The penultimate race of the road racing season saw some new, although many would say old, faces turn up for what was the shortest of all the road racing distances. The 4km race would take athletes from Bayside Road through Winston Churchill into Line Wall and down to Ragged Staff before returning to Bayside Road for the finish.

The likes of Liam Byrnes and Joe Celecia added their names to the long list of runners, many short distance runners taking on a bigger challenge than they normally would, other taking on a much shorter course than they are normally accustomed to and raring for the challenge to see how different running a shorter race was like.

With no Richard Blagg to challenge for a place at the top, due to an Achilles injury Arnold Rogers had an easy ride in this weekend's 4km flat race. The race, which was run partly in the rain on Sunday saw a somewhat different group of athletes join

First through the line was Arnold Rogers who had build quite a gap between himself and second placed Abdullah Ahammad, who was himself the first youth past the line.

Although the turn out for the races was high the seasons times have been viewed as considerably lower than other seasons, many attributing it to a lack of top runners challenging for top position. Arnold once again saw himself having to beat his own pace with no other competitor really challenging him for first place.

Former road racing champion Liam Byrne, who before the race had himself stated that his legs were not what they were before came in third. He was to prove himself wrong coming in third with a sprint finish to the line. The first female past the finishing line was Karyn Barnett, with Alison Edwards another of the athletes not competing on the day.

The next race in the athletics calendar is the Round the Rock on the 6th March.

Futsal League mak changes as Lions a thrown out

As Coresportgib reported last week both Lincoln Red Imps and Lions FC Futsal teams have been thrown out of the First Division following their non-appearances at games in recent weeks.

The league took the decision last week, telling clubs at the end of the week and informing all clubs affected by the changes on how this would affect results.

A Futsal league official explained that on Friday all clubs in the first division have been spoken to with the end result being that points and results already completed in matches against Lincoln and Lions will stand as they are. All future fixtures will,

however, see the three points given to the rivals, with a 3-0 score line adjuticated.

The demise of both Lincoln and Lions has come as no surprise to some in the futsal league who have indicated that with many players playing both eleven aside and futsal, and having loyalty to two clubs these was expected as pressure increased on players to decide which was their priority. Lincoln are among one of the teams in which players dropped out as they went to other clubs, and some were forced to decide to either take up futsal or eleven aside.

The resulting changes saw a mixed

kes big and Lincoln package of fixtures which were confusing to see. Teams were listed as playing twice on the same day at the same time even in some cases, with only one match played. This inevitable scenario is likely to continue as matches are rescheduled to make the best out of the allocations in place for league matches.

The first match of the weekend saw Manchester 62 play against Champion hopefuls Lynx. The latter took control of the match from the very first instance, opening a substantial lead within the first few minutes of play.

Manchester 62 had among its players

former 11 aside coach Ochello in what was a surprising line-up for the struggling outfit. Ochello had prior to this week coached from the bench. On this occasion he actually took on the role as a player. The Manchester team which had many "old heads" playing has already led to some eyebrows lifted as the Manchester 62 are seen as the next team that could possibly end up with similar problems as Lions and Lincoln. Already struggling at the foot of the table the 18-0 scoreline is seen as a demoralising result which could lead to players dropping out in the coming weeks.

the table saw Lynx win by an 18-0 goal margin.

Lynx were not the only ones to put 18 past their opponents, with Gibraltar Scorpions, buoyed by the expulsion of Lincoln also putting 18 past Cannons, who are also struggling at the foot of the table.

It was the Gibraltar Pheonix versus Glacis match that brought about the biggest surprise. Glacis who last week did not field a team, were heavily defeated by Pheonix by 6-2, opening a gap at the top for St Joseph's who beat College 1975 4-2 and Lynx, both riding high in the table.

4th February 2016

The chilly cold evening of Friday saw the Saints face Glacis in a clash both teams were determined to get the three points. Glacis, whose season started with defeat after defeat, fresh faces now seeing a resurgence of the old Glacis feel, was a team with a new determination proof of which was their early warm up.

The talk amongst the team, which could be easily heard through the empty stands was "vamo pa gana" (let's go to win). After their defeat at the hands of Gibraltar United this was a match they needed to grab by the scruff of the neck from the start.

This was not to happen after a tentative couple minutes Saints first attack ended with a goal from Lopez as the ball rebounded back to his feet to slot it back in.

Within seconds an outstretched leg from Lopez again was not enough to push the ball past Glacis keeper for the second. The ball going for a corner instead. Enrique soon made amends as he met the corner kick pass by the near post and flicked the ball into the back of the net with his back to goal.

Two nil down, Glacis were not to be out done yet. Sastrie, who was becoming a menace from early only putting the ball wide as a he cut a pass back to the keeper.

Glacis tried to regain control of the game playing on Saints mistakes. Sastrie once again took advantage of a mistake in the pass back cutting to the left and driving it home as Perez came out to meet him. Calls for offside were ignored to the frustration of Saints defenders.

Just four mins later a free kick from inside St Joseph's half saw the ball go straight through the Glacis defence leaving Morlan alone at the edge of the box. Driving the ball low to the inside of the post Glacis Keeper, Tover, was unable to meet it putting St Joseph's three up. Glacis were not to give up hope, and main-

tained their game pressing and countering st Joseph's to close the gap. With 32 minutes gone, a freekick lobbed into the area was missed by the saints defence leaving the ball to be cut across goal for Lopez to push in, once again with calls for offside.

After several more breaks by Glacis Saints keeper Perez was clearly annoyed with his defence for losing the ball close to the area. In turn his own coach got angry with Perez for ignoring his calls for goal kicks to be taken by someone else. Saints lost their cool momentarily as they argued among themselves.

Glacis pressed hard and had their chances but could not finalise them.

Instead it was St Joseph's who capitalised on mistakes as once again the Glacis keeper was beaten from a shot from outside the area, once again from Morlan who seemed to have found his target well.

Glacis coach kept his team going shouting from the sidelines that they were not giving up or throwing in the towel as the half time whistle blew.

As the second half started it was St Joseph's who came out the strongest with Gomes Torres broke through the defence and

blasted from the edge of the box for the 5-2.

With Glacis coach still singing the same hymn of "Don't give up" Glacis kept the momentum chasing after balls and running at St Joseph's as they tried to shorten the gap. Lopez was unfortunate to have a goal disallowed for offside with Sastrie denied two clear chances through saves from Perez.

Sastrie, nevertheless, hit his target with 8 minutes to go for full time.

As the tensions grew, and with St Joseph's seeing that their tactics to slow the pace were not working the match became a hot pot of frustrations, with some tough tackling and confrontations. It was in one of this that Lopez, who had been growing more frustrated not just with the tackles, but with his own teammates passing reacted angrily to a Saint's tackle and faced off with a defender, receiving an immediate red from the official.

With only ten men on the field Glacis were unable to reach St Joseph's penalty area, defeated on the final whistle, but demonstrating that the new faces in the team are likely to cause some upsets in the coming weeks as they battle for points to stay up.

Angels in new stride as they beat Gibraltar United click here to see full gallery collection in our website

The Gibraltar United versus Angels match had more than its share of drama and intrigue.

Angels who have been struggling all season came out with what can only be described as a totally new outfit, and with the rumour mill working overtime as the expected "Brazilian investors" had as yet not officially materialises.

Just before the match Coresportgib caught up with Angels President Edmund Hosken, when asked to comment on the changes of players and rumours of investors Edmunds said, " Yes I have eleven new players all friends who are helping me out.

Gibraltar United FC 1 - 2 Angels FC Green 88 Rodriguez 31 Rodriguez 75

They saw I was having a bad time and they have come to help me out," as he denied that there were any investors who had brought in new players into the team. Asked on the investors Edmonds said "In the future there might be an investor but not yet we have to wait and see." His comments came just hours after reports emerged of several people expected to be part of the Angels team would not be allowed to be pitch side as essential paperwork required by the GFA had not arrived, and were therefore not considered a part of the coaching team, or players.

This was quickly confirmed when during the match when a group were seen leaving the

4th February 2016 pitch side and head to the stand from where they were giving out instructions on how Angels should play, what changes to make and what the playing formation should be.

Angels own line -up saw a total of 13 changes from the team that first played at the start of the season. Only four players survived from the start of the season, Villada Morente (c), Larouia, Bernal and Arroyal in a line-up which included seven substitutes, this from a team that had difficulty before the close of the year in finding substitutes to be on the bench.

The unknown quantity, as Angels presented themselves as, was to be a mixed surprise for Gibraltar United, who came into the match on the back of a win against Glacis United.

The newly refreshed Angels demonstrated themselves to be a fast disciplined line-up. Banda Daniel and Fernandez proving to be very effective central defenders whose command of the area allowed for Lopez to push up through the flanks. Within the first few minutes Gibraltar United felt the new strength of Angels at their doorstep with three attempts at goal going narrowly wide. Angels presented themselves as a well disciplined, well organised outfit, with players supporting each other, forward attacking play strategies and very much a team that did not

consider themselves as a defensive playing outfit.

Although unsettled by the new look Angels, Gibraltar United did have their early chances only to see new keeper Filoho pushing the ball to safety.

The first goal came in the 31st minute when Rodriguez chipped over a defender to cut across him, and in the same stride launched a devastating half volley for the first.

With Angels improved across all zones of the field the match became a competitively edged game which saw both teams have their chances to increase the goal tally. Angels, however, had more of the ball, with a free flowing midfield play, and some dangerously accurate through balls tearing through Gibraltar's defence.

It was not until the 75th minute that Angels struck again, once again through Rodriguez who saw the ball land after a flick from a miss header beat both the Gibraltar United keeper and his defender Carl leaving him free to push the ball into the back of the net.

Gibraltar United did not give in, and continued to stride forward trying to find a way through to goal. Montovio who had been threatening to score met a deep cross into the area from Carl with an overhead kick which saw the ball go over the

CoreSportgib defence and keeper for Green to dive header over the line.

With the score at 2-1 and just a few minutes to go Gibraltar United had several chances to equalise only to see the ball hit wide off the mark.

Angels who had come into the match without a win since beating Glacis at the end of November recorded their second victory closing the gap with Glacis to four points. The initial signs now are that Angels new outfit could cause some upsets in what is already a league with a runaway leader.

The future of Angels is still a question of intrigue with the presence of what seemed like a full coaching team, and what seemed like players, in the stands further adding to the intrigue as Angels seemed to be controlled by those on the stand rather than those on the bench.

The GFA is already expected to be looking into the affairs of Angels as the massive changes within the club have raised concern. A fifteen man change in personnel in mid season has raised serious concerns across the football arena. 4th February 2016

CoreSportgib Just a week after being narrowly defeated by Lions in the cup, Europa came into the match knowing that they still had not won a game this league season.

Under the guidance of Adrian Holmes Europa are seen as one of the most improved teams in the women's league. At the start of the season the team showed some raw talent, but were still very much an undisciplined side finding their way around the pitch leading to some very heavy defeats.

Europa, however, who had still to win a league match this season were the underdogs from the very start. However, Lions had a depleted subs bench, with just to players on the bench to count on, something which they would eventually find was not enough as their luck seemed to have steered off course.

The match started much as expected with Lions taking control of the ball and pushing Europa back. Attempts through the flanks, deep balls in, through crosses were all met with the same resolute determination to clear their lines and defend their penalty area. Europa maintained their composure as the pressure mounting adding to the frustrations of the Lioness who could not get through for a clear chance.

As time wore on Europa's solid defending saw them grow in confidence and themselves push Lions back into their area.

Lions were the dominant side, with the greater control of possession, and the more chances. Their finishing, however, failed to have that edge which would have put them ahead.

With the game at nil nil, Europa started the second half with a surprise of their own. An early corner was driven low into the middle of the area catching the Lions defence napping. The ball struck in by Revagliatte for the 1-0. click here to see full gallery collection in our website

CoreSportgib Lions soon found themselves backpedalling again when Jackson broke through the flank and out run Espinosa to the line before turning and rounding the Lions keeper for the two nil in what was a well controlled run by the Europa forward.

Stunned by the score line Lions tried to gain control back of the match.

Lions pressed forward but were unable to find the net for a long time. A scramble in front of goal which should have seen Europa conceding ending with a clearance in the end. Lions however came back into the game scoring two consecutive times to bring the game back to level terms.

The luckless Lions saw two of their players injured, leaving them with no alternatives on the bench. With Lions restructuring, and losing Espinosa at the back a loose ball saw Europa strike for goal again, an outstretched Lions keeper unable to reach the ball as it trickled inside the post for the third.

Europa held on, keeping their composure at the back and pressing in midfield to earn the three points. Their first win of the season. click here to see full gallery collection in our website

A FOOTBALLER

Its sometimes still strange when you are listening to football talk and suddenly you realise that those speaking are actually women, and they are talking about their own experiences on the field, such is still the old macho ways of football.

Q - When did you start liking football?

At a very young age, I used to watch it at home all the time. The weekends at my dads used to be back to back football. I used to play at school and in the fields with my What is still even stranger is brothers and the other that some people do not even kids from the area. realise that there is a women's league in Gibraltar, Q - I understand you have three brothers, one of which and that there are women plays for Europa FC U17, footballers in Gibraltar. what's been their reaction They do not get the exposure to you playing football? they should, they do not get Two don't really interest the support they should. The conclusion, I won't be speaking to her that often, a Q - Who have you played for and what's been your Manchester player supportexperience so far? ing Liverpool, only Liverpool fans can get away doing that. I only joined teams once I was here in Gibraltar.

There weren't many girls who played football in the UK. Although once at school a World Cup competition was organized and there was a girls team and boys team from each form group and the boys got knocked out in the first round but my team won the World Cup. We got medals and mentioned in the school assembly. The whole school were talking about us as a team and came to watch the final. It was great. Once playing football in Gib, I played for Angels Alliance and then St Joseph's for a short period but due to work I couldn't be committed.

Years later I started playing with Manchester and have played with them ever since playing for Manchester has been great, we have won so much and still have more to win. We are not only a great team but a great family and we all share a great bond and understanding of the way we

Q - When you first returned to gib from uk how hard was it to play football in Gibraltar?

I just used to play in the parks at first but then we used to play as part of PE and that's when people started noticing me and my friend asked if I wanted to join her team...Angels Alliance. And that's how it all started.

Q - You were lucky to see gib enter UEFA and for women's football to take off at the same time, do you think that without UEFA you wouldn't have been playing?

No because if it hadn't have happened when it did the fact that so many people were committed to making it happen it would have happened eventually.

Q-The old ways of thinking is that girls playing football you are just not girls. What do you say to ppl who think like this?

well it think the idea in this day and age is ludicrous and I think more people are actually coming to terms with the idea of girls playing football. Us girls are allowed to play and we should receive the same privileges and same media coverage that the men's matches get

Q - when you are not playing how different are you from other girls?

I'm practically the same, I love shopping and make up and everything girly. Just because I play football doesn't mean I can't be girly.

Q - Now Gibraltar has its own league where do you personally hope to go from here?

I hope we can play more tournaments with different cities or countries and make women's football progress for the younger players

Q- There are young players who wish to become pros one day do you think Gibraltar offers them enough of a chance to do so on the future?

Unfortunately not. Hopefully one day it will but the young ones who are good now need to go off and develop their skills and they have the ability to do so they should take it.

And lastly surprise us who do you really support? Liverpool

n what was a wet chilly Sunday morning few ventured to attend the badly advertised Women's hockey cup final between Hawks and Eagles, the two teams representing Gibraltar hockey in the forthcoming European Hockey Challenge tournament to be held in Gibraltar. Both teams started slow with a string of failed passes and missed controls seen during the first few minutes of the match as both acquainted themselves to the environment. It was Hawks who seemed to warm up quicker to the match, giving it more urgency as the minutes progressed. Hawks pushed the Eagles team back into their own half. The initial pressure paid off when Hawks broke through when a ball was hit into the D, and on a one on one the ball was stroked past the keeper for the 1-0. The goal spurred Eagles into action pressing higher on the field. It was, however, Hawks who once again found themselves with a chance as they countered, finding themselves three against three, only to see the ball blocked by the Eagles keeper.

Eagles more aggressive in their play than at the start of the match then had their own chance when the ball was hit hard into the middle to leave number 15 alone. half. Eagles kept two up front who where shadowed well. Keeping a back four in their half. Hawks were playing with two defenders firmly in the back using more resources up front than Eagles. Using their midfield players to move in and out in support and bringing back their two flankers when required. Good defensive control play by Hawks also kept Eagles

out of reaching the D. As the match progressed Eagles higher pressure was not allowing Hawks many options upfront. When they did get into the D, Hawks were a clear threat which seemed to force Eagles to hold back their tight line of four at the back. The first half finished 1-0 with very little between both teams separating them.

Hawks started playing the second half with a more controlled passing game pressing further forward more and pinning Eagles back for long periods of the game. With Eagles not changing their formation this left them with difficulties going forward, making it harder for them to find space to break through Hawks tightly knitted midfield, which was acting as the first line of defence.

Hawks more intense pressing soon won them a short corner which after several attempts to find a way to goal saw the ball struck into the back of net for the two nil.

send off left the doors open for Eagles to attack. Moving Torilla further forward and reducing their numbers at the back Eagles found a way through to reduce the deficit. With an increased urgency Eagles threatened to equalise as Hawks were pinned back. They had, nevertheless left it to late.

As the match was reaching its finale the tension could be seen as both teams started seeing more vociferous calls to the umpire, and more players Hawks coming out eventual getting sin binned. Isola Blue Stars finally beaten

I

t had to come one day when Isola Blue Stars would find its match and lose its unbeaten run, Mill Pharmacy Airballs becoming the first team this season to take all the points this Monday in a tough, highly contested match.

The cards were already on the table even before the match begun with Isola Blue Stars coach already admitting it was going to be a "very tough match",

explaining that many key players had dropped out at the last minute, some due to illness.

Both teams started slow, with mistakes in passing and delivering seeing the scores maintained level for most of the first quarter.

There was little margin between the two sides. Isola Blue Stars with a depleted bench tried to set their own pace to the match, however, basic mistakes cost them dearly giving away some

basic passes away leading to points.

Mill Pharmacy eventually took the lead placing themselves five points clear throughout most of the first quarter, only to see it reduced to 22-21.

In the second quarter, Isola Blues Stars, already struggling because they only had two men on the bench were to see their team further reduced in numbers as GBC Sports Award nominee Aaron Santos took

a hard fall and injured his ankle.

The young man unable to continue with the game. Somehow, Isola Blue Stars fought back and brought the scores to their favour. The match was littered with mistakes in passing at this stage with a relatively slower pace than usual. Isola lost the advantage for a while and saw themselves trailing again by five points only to reduce it by half time and remain in the game with Mill Pharmacy going into the

break 40-38 in front.

With Isola Blue Stars having very few options on the bench Mill Pharmacy took the game to a new level running at the Blue Stars on counters and forcing them to retreat at pace. This was met with Isola doing likewise, turning the game from a slow moving match to a to and fro affair, neither team separating from each other.

It was not until Isola Blue Stars decided to keep one

player up front and only defend with four that the game turned in Isola's favour.

Isola start to control the pace setting the game at their pace level for a while, in doing so they increased the lead taking it to 58-48 by the end of the third quarter.

It was in the last quarter that Mill Pharmacy turned the match upside down as they used their advantage on the bench to good effect.

teams were at 69-69, with a frantic performance on both sides to try and get that final basket which would see them through.

It was not to be, as the match reached its full time with the scores level.

Unlike other sports basketball likes a winner, not a draw so a five minute fifth

period was played to the detriment of Isola Blue Stars. The already exhausted Isola Blue Stars team were no match for Mill Pharmacy who did not relent from attacking and taking the lead further forward. Mill Pharmacy came out 77-73 winners in the end and finally putting an end to Isola Blue Stars unbeaten run.

CoreSportgib

CoreSportGib is a digital weekly sports news publication for Gibraltar. It is published on a weekly basis and can be read online, or offline using the Issuu.com digital publishing platform.

However, that is not the only thing CoreSportGib is about. CoresportGib is a publication created by Core Photography who have been actively dedicated as photojournalist in Gibraltar since the launch of our service in early 2014.

As part of our work we have covered all the main news events in Gibraltar, created stock image libraries on events related to Gibraltar and have worked and collaborated with the UK National media.

As part of our service we launched www.corephotographygibralt ar.com, our image collection online service which exclusively provides all our images to the public and publishers. Users can purchase images

from our online service for either editorial or personal use. With over 5,000 unique users every month returning to our site on nearly a daily basis, and with over 250,000 page views a month the photographic collection has become a mainstream media information service for many users.

Recently Core Photography opted to divert its attention from main stream news to sports recognising the need to fill a gap in the market in which sports reporting was limited in Gibraltar.

The success of our Coresport galleries led us to seek new forms of keeping readers informed on sports news stories. This led us to the creation of a weekly digital review magazine, initially aimed at providing more information on the sports stories we were covering, but soon becoming a Sports magazine in its own right, with its own identity, separate from Core Photography's online service.

We have since refocused our objectives and Core Photography's services have been aligned to provide a full sports coverage through its various platforms, moving away from main stream everyday political news to sports news.

Our blog has daily updates on sports events, incidents, news stories, as well as general information. Our Facebookpage coresportgib carries similar information, whilst all our social media accounts at Twitter (CorePhotoGib), Tumblr, Pininterest, Linkdit, StumbleUpon and our Blogspot blogs carrying links to our information. Our main news blog at corephotographygibblog.wor dpress.com also carry news and information and the latest links to our stories, galleries and even the digital magazine pages. The digital publication itself can be viewed through three different platforms, allowing readers to choose their preferred option. The main publication will be

found, with hyperlinks and other facilities at our issuu.com/coresportgib platform. Providing a unique reader experience where traditional magazine reading meets digital technology.

The magazine can be read on multiple mobile devices, desktop and offline. It can even be printed if you prefer to read it on paper.

The page spreads will also be made available at our Facebook page at Coresportgib as one of our image albums which will allow for readers to share, comment, download, save or basically do as they generally do when interacting with social media.

Being a part of Core Photography, which has its own website www.corephotographygibralt ar.com, the digital magazine will also see the page spreads published online as part of our online collections. Pages can be viewed within our galleries and can be read individually via our slideshow. The only difference being that the pages will have no hyperlinks (which is why Issuu.com is the preferred option). In the near future

Coresportgib will spread its distribution even further as it seeks to widen its market and reach new audiences interested in Gibraltar related sports stories.

We are also present in Joomag.

Our stats show that since the launch of CoreSportGib as a digital publication it has been growing in readership every week, with every publication in our archives increasing in readership weeks after as well.

Over 3500 readers have read our second issue since it was published three weeks ago. Our latest issue, published last Thursday has already received the close to 1,500 readers, an average which has been seen every week with all publications.

Last week we also ventured to include our pages in our Facebook page. In just a couple of days over 4,300 users were reached, peaking at close to 5,300 by Tuesday.

The pagespreads which were also uploaded to corephotographygibraltar.co m, but not highlighted or publicised as we tested the system out also received over 1,000 page views in

just two days.

All in all, just adding the figures up our readership of last weeks pages would be well over 6,000. So why are we not celebrating, especially considering that as a new publication such figures would have others pronouncng themselves as “the best. Simply because we have a long way to do before we achieve our goal. Coresportgib is a free publication, and as such a dedicated team working on it requires for a stable platform which is funded via sponsorship and advertisers, both of which Coresportgib will now be seeking.

Our aim is simple, we want Coresportgib to be what readers relate to when speaking sports in Gibraltar. A place where readers know that they can count on us to deliver the latest news, and where sports people know that their efforts are acknolwedged and have a platform through which to be broadcast to the public.

We want Coresportgib to be the leading publication for sports in Gibraltar, and for that we have a long way to go before we even think we are close to being so.

short news Actively searching for new space

The Sports ministry is reported to have been actively seeking new spaces across Gibraltar which would increase the number of sporting and leisure facilities available in Gibraltar. With the Bayside Sports Complex seeing an increased used in recent years, including a more than doubling in its use as events host venues for events such as the international dog show and music concerts, the Ministry has been looking at every conceivable option available to them to increase sports and leisure facility spaces in Gibraltar.

Among the latest areas to have been looked at are abandoned and unused facilities within the rock such as old military tunnels.

Although no decisions have as yet been taken, the extensive number of tunnels, rooms and installations within the rock, constructed during the cold war means that there are numerous options available which have previously not been looked into in the past.

Other options looked at are the possibilities of using new

developments to incorporate facilities such as small pitches in areas such as flat rooftops.

The initiative to find new sites is said to be at an embryonic stage although Coresportgib understands that an urgency to provide new facilities has been put as one of the key priorities as demand for sporting and leisure facilities continues to increase.

Clarification on Victoria Stadium

A spokesman for Number Six Convent Place said last week - “Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar would like to clarify its position on Victoria Stadium.

Victoria Stadium will not be upgraded to a Category 3 stadium. As emphasised by the Minister for Sports, the Hon Steven Linares, in an interview printed in the Gibraltar Chronicle on 18th January,

it will remain a Municipal Stadium and the Government intends to expand and improve the facilities at the Bayside Sports Complex to accommodate all sports.

11th February 2016 The Government understands that the Gibraltar Football Association are commissioning their plans for a Gibraltar National Football Stadium at Lathbury Barracks through local architects and these are expected to be placed before the DPC shortly.”

Gibraltar United left it late

G

ibraltar United battling at the foot of the table in the First Division clashed with Red Imps, themselves only mid way up the second division in what was to be a match with little to talk about, in this the first of the round 2 Rock Cup matches this week.

Both teams started tentatively, Gibraltar United controlling play as they tested Red Imps, whilst the

latter tried to find ways to break through the tight defence which Gib Utd are now well known for.

United took control of the match within the first twenty minutes controlling the pace with elaborate passing through midfield which found very little in way of reaching the oppositions penalty area to cause any real damage. The first half saw a handful of shots at goal from either side. The clearest chance coming to Gib Utd's Pitu who hit the crossbar from a free kick, only to see the ball goal out to goal kick. Neither

keeper saw much action. It was in the first ten minutes of the second half that the deadlock was broken when Ellul got the ball inside the penalty area and lobbed over the keeper's head with a volley. Young 15 year old Red Imps keeper unable to do much about it.

The match transcended into a tactical play by Gibraltar United who for the next 30 minutes kept most of the control of the ball and played to their pace, slowing down the pace to a stroll.

With the match coming into

its last few minutes Red Imps stunned Gibraltar United when they broke through the left flank leaving the defence behind. A well placed cross into the middle, right in front of goal saw Hernandez come in with a header placing it away from the Gib United keeper for the 1-1.

The goal sparked both teams into frantic action, Gibraltar United, that had not really attempted a penetrating attack since they scored pressed forward. With four minutes of injury time given Ellul once again found the ball inside Red Imps penalty area and chipped over the keeper who was caught in no-mans land as he came to meet the pass.

With just minutes to go United held the ball to reach the next round of the Rock Cup, winning 2-1.

short news Football keeps an eye on betting trends

With Gibraltar having entered the professional football world a close watch is being maintained on the betting industry trends after concerns that Gibraltar is still a young football market which is open to the vulnerabilities from global organised syndicates and even at a lower scale abuses for financial gain using the betting industry, especially online betting originating outside the main regulated European markets by punters trying to make a quick buck. Recent trends have already raised concerns, including CoreSportGib understands, an investigation into some irregularities which have been raised involving local league players alleged to have placed bets online with respect to Gibraltar football matches.

Strict regulations govern the placement of bets by players registered with the Gibraltar leagues, which does not allow any player to make bets on matches, even if they are not playing in the same match.

The concerns are not only focused on 11 aside football, but also include all other football leagues and sports where bets are being taken for Gibraltar matches of any sort.

Concerns have also been raised over the potential of abuses in relation to growing trends which has seen some betting firms keeping tabs on things such as fouls, yellow cards, or other minor incidents during the games which punters can bet on.

The concerns follow trends which have been

reported on across other European football leagues which have been targeted by foreign betting companies, some from Asia and East European states, where regulations are less stringent, and which are easily accessible online, and in which abuses have been recorded in areas such as players receiving yellow cards or fouls given during a match. Areas which some betting companies are increasingly allowing punters to bet on.

The authorities, including the betting industry, are said to be keeping a watchful eye over this betting trends directly related to Gibraltar football matches to ensure that any irregularities are investigated to ensure that Gibraltar is kept secure from such activity. As one expert told CoreSportGib, "unless it is stopped from the very first instance you could have an avalanche and it would be very hard to get rid of such activity, Gibraltar has to watch out for such potential risks as other small football leagues have fallen foul to it and we do not want that to happen in Gibraltar." w: www.corephotographygibraltar.com f: facebook.com/Corephotographygib t: @CorePhotoGib
