speaks to CoreSportGib

his past Sunday Arnold Rogers stamped his mark on Gibraltar athletics winning the half marathon. His victory came just a week after winning the Top of the Rock race, and the 10kms the previous week.

CoreSportGib caught up with the athlete to find out more about what makes him tick and what his future holds for him.

Coresportgib - Now you have had some time to think about yesterday’s race how well did you think you did considering you were believed to be aiming for the 1hr 14min mark and you achieved it?

Arnold Rogers - Yes I’m pleased with how it went. I was using this race as a bit of a test to see where I am at and to test some pacing strategies in preparation for my main race the Army and Inter Services half marathon championships in March. Looking at how I did Sunday

my times are around about where I want them for a month out.

Coresportgib - how badly did the weather conditions affect you during the race considering the blistering wind conditions?

Arnold Rogers -Yeah the weather definitely had an impact on peoples race times. Fortunately there were some elements of the course that were sheltered from the wind, however from Queensway all the way to the track we had the wind in

our faces.

Coresportgib - Your closest rivals, Chris Walker and Robert Matto on the day were some distance from you from the start, did you think at any time they might catch up on you?

Arnold Rogers - I knew I had set a fast pace from the off and managed to open a big gap. That enabled me to relax into my pace and run my own race. I had thought that maybe I’d gone off to hard and would pay the price

later on and that maybe I would be caught by them but luckily for me that wasn’t the case. Robert and Chris are much more experienced than me and in a race of that distance anything can happen.

Coresportgib - Traffic on the day, in particular at Bayside Road was somewhat worse than other days, did it cause you any problems?

Arnold Rogers - It always adds to the experience competing with traffic as well

as other runners. Its one of the things that makes running in gibraltar all the more exciting. I try to catch the eye of the drivers and quickly let them know that I’m coming through. Luckily being at the front I’ve normally got a marshall on a moped not too far from me controlling traffic.

Coresportgib - You have been running in Gibraltar’s road races, but are not part of the league itself. does that make any difference to you in your final objectives when

racing?

Arnold Rogers - No, not at all. My objective is to always perform to the best of my ability and I always try to run my own races. Unfortunately, although I have won all of my races in the league, due to work commitments I’ve had to miss two races. This has left me a potential 200 points behind and so I cannot win the league. Hopefully next year ill be able to compete in

all the races.

Coresportgib - The winner of several key local races such as the 10k, the TOTR and the half marathon, some without anyone really challenging you for that first position. How difficult has it been to maintain your pace and develop yourself lately considering this fact?

Arnold Rogers - I think that I’m fairly good at pushing myself both in training and

23rd February 2016

racing. I think the hours and hours of training by myself help me mentally when running alone in races. Obviously their are times when having people around you would help and definitely improve running times but for now I’m happy to push on by myself and save that potential few percent for the really big races.

Coresportgib - Lets speak about Arnold Rogers a bit, when did you actually start

CoreSportgib

taking running seriously?

Arnold Rogers - I first started running in an attempt to get fit to join the Army in the UK back in 2009. Once I joined I carried on running but never at a competitive level. Its only since I came to Gibraltar in 2013 that I really upped my training and only last year that I started racing. Since Ive started training hard and racing I’m really enjoying it and luckily seem to be getting fairly

good at it. Im very keen to continue getting better and if the opportunity ever arose would love to make a career out of it.

Coresportgib - You have proven to be a consistently capable runner, who is not scared of challenging your own times even without competition. What keeps you going and what makes you tick?

Arnold Rogers - Sometimes I wonder myself why I do it. When your out running for hours on end in the wind and the rain it can get a bit tedious and you often wonder if its all worth it. But when you cross the line after pushing yourself to the limit for the last hour or so it makes you feel great and a real sense of achievement. Top that with coming in the top 3 and the buzz is even better. I love competing but

even more I love winning.

Coresportgib - What’s been the most challenging race you have competed in during recent years?

Arnold Rogers - Definitely last December at the Malaga marathon. I was ill the night before which meant my nutrition plan had gone out the window even before the start. Then I went out way too fast costing me dearly later in the race. By mile 22, I hit the wall “big time”. I had to walk/jog all the way to the

finish costing me about 10 minutes.

Coresportgib - Other than Gibraltar, do you run elsewhere or compete elsewhere now-a-days?

Arnold Rogers - At the moment I don’t really have time to venture anywhere else. Id love to run some of the bigger races in Spain in order to push myself further though. I am due to go back to the UK to run the inter services championships in March. Hopefully this will

23rd February 2016

open some doors and maybe even get me selected for the army team.

Coresportgib - What next for you? There is talk of a full marathon. Is this so? and where will we be able to see you next?

Arnold Rogers - I hope to compete in the round the rock race on the 6th March and then onto the Inter services, my main race so far this year. A good finish there could mean Im entered into the London marathon as

part of the Army team.

Coresportgib - What type of training do you have to go through to be able to compete at the level you want to achieve?

Arnold Rogers - Its not easy. A typical training week is about 16 hours long and involves around a 100 miles of running. On top of that there’s strength and conditioning training, Flexibility and those beloved ice baths to help recover from all of this. Diet is also

really important. Not so much loosing weight but just making sure your eating right and giving your body the fuel it needs to recover. I do enjoy training but at the same time as a full time job it is hard work.

Coresportgib - Will you be entering next seasons road racing league?

Arnold Rogers - Yes Hopefully next year I will have chance to race all the the races in the league.

Coresportgib - You have a proven record on the road, but will you be venturing into the shorter track races when the season starts?

Arnold Rogers - I would like to give it a go and see how I get on. I have never done it before so it would all be new to me. I see myself as a 10000m kind of guy anything else would be far too short

ith some 40 athletes competing in this Sunday’s half marathon, a total of 13.1 miles, and with the inclement weather which saw high winds across most of the northside of the course many expected a higher number of athletes not finishing. This was however, not to materialise as only two runners abandoned the race due to injury. All other runners completed the course.

The runners first had to complete a four lap course within Victoria Stadium before they ventured onto the road. The very exit onto Bayside Road became a hazard as runners crossed path with vehicles dropping of children who were

23rd February 2016

playing in the junior leagues matches on the main pitch. Something which had not been planned earlier The matches had only been organised to be played on the main pitch this Sunday at the last minute after the use of the small pitches had to be stopped until a roof netting is fitted due to complains from the RAF.

The runners would them have to run from the Sundial through Line Wall Road to the end of Rosia Road by Cumberland buildings where they would turn and return via Queensway to Bayside Road. The circuit would have to be completed three times before they returned to Victoria Stadium where they would complete one more lap.

Once again the race was pretty much determined at the very start with Arnold Rogers taking an early lead. Arnold gained a close to 200m advantage within the stadium against Chris Walker and Robert Matto who followed closely behind. The British runner lapped runners within the stadium itself as he set his pace for the race.

Arnold was to hold his lead throughout the race completing the circuits within the 21 minute range expected for him. As he completed the first road circuit Arnold had already stretched his lead to approximately 1000m from the 2nd and 3rd placed runners who had maintained their pace together. Arnold was to lap the last runners

by the end of the second circuit lap as he continued his unrelenting pace to victory.

Chris Walker and Robert Matto who were the closest rival maintained their pace throughout, with Walker stepping up and stretching away from Matto at the end of the second circuit lap. Arnold was to enter Victoria Stadium first with a clear distance between himself and the runners up. Arnold completed his lap around Victoria Stadium with enough time to watch from the sidelines his closest rival Chris Walker enter. Arnold clocking a time of 1 hour 13 mins 54 seconds. The distance between Walker and Matto clearly now visible as Walker entered the final stretch of the final lap when

Matto entered the stadium.

Not far behind Turnock appeared to end up fourth.

Walker completed with a time of 1 hour 21 mins 22 seconds whilst Matto was just under a minute behind with 1 hour 22 mins 10 seconds. The first female to complete the course was Barnett who was unchallenged by other female runners.

The event was marred by the hazards created by the use of one entrance into the stadium for parents and junior footballers and the runners which saw many an instance with people forced out of the way so as not to interrupt the runners. The normally quite

Bayside Road on a Sunday morning was far from quite, with vehicles using the road to pick up children, stopping and on many occasions crossing the path of runners completing the circuit run. Something which observers pointed out would not have been the case had the small pitches been in used. The same area would have been clear from the traffic as most would have ended up in the area of CEPSA which is where the entrance to the small pitches are.

The event, however, was a success with the 38 runner who completed the race braving not just the challenging distance the half marathon presented but the fact the high winds posed a further problem on the day.

Coach against coach, sister against sister click here to see full gallery collection in our website

23rd February 2016

CoreSportgib Netball brought together some interesting combinations as Elite Travel faced Marble Arc it was the two Under 17 National team coaches that faced each other, sister against sister. If both enjoyed a friendly relation, it was on the court that they competed team against team with no loyalty but that for their team.

There was all to play after the second quarter ended with Marble Arc just one point ahead against Elite Travel. With a 14-13 score line both teams had been battling head to head and entering the second half of the game with little splitting them apart.

Elite soon went ahead in the third quarter. Good tactical running and positioning from a team whose key players coached the under 17, although Marble arc also presumed of the same as they too had members of their squad coaching at national level.

Elite were making good use of space to receive the ball, pressing on Marble Arc in defence to reduce space. Marble Arc nevertheless kept pace and stayed one point behind for most of the quarter.

Elite could have gone further ahead but found their finishing not quite up to their standards, and with Marble Arc making good intercepts at the back whilst dominating play in the 3rd period Elite was not breaking away on the scoreboard.

Marble Arc’s finishing was more consistent, allowing them to keep up with Elite with the score board staying one point between the two

CoreSportgib teams.

Elite eventually brought it on and with very quick paced passing and positioning in open space managed to take the lead to four points at one stage.

At the end of the 3rd quarter they had the score shortened to 25-22.

Marble arc entered the last quarter attacking Elite, and were able to reduce the score to one point at one stage.

Elite then took control and returned to very quick passing and open positioning which saw them put themselves four ahead once again.

As the match intensified further it was Elite who broke away finding space and penetrating the Elite defence to score. Elite pulled the game out of reach ending with a ten point lead, and winning with a score of 3727. A score line which merely represented the final minutes of play, as both teams had equally deserved to gather points from this match.

A spectacle in netball

A

nyone who would have seen last week’s announcem ent on Facebook of a “match not to be missed!” might have wondered why a second division match could be so important.

Indeed the clues were in the continuing lines stating “both teams showing our powerful up-and-coming youngsters at their best and no doubt demonstrating top quality and skill on court.” Anyone who paid attention, and there were some 50 people

who actually did turn up, were not to be disappointed as indeed the match was true to the very description of it.

The second clue was at the match itself, just before the start two very young teams appeared on court. The dressed in green on one side and green and black on the other anyone who have been following netball would soon realise that they were looking at the Under 17 Gibraltar National team, those selected, those not as fortunate to have reached the final twelve, but surely enough players who had

committed to training every week, at least three times a week in some cases, for the past six months.

With the Netball Under 17 European Championship due to be hosted in Gibraltar in just a fortnight from now there was no better place to be than at the top of the second division clash between Agones-Alwani and Eastgate. Watching both teams field their sides was like watching the Under 17 Gibraltar squad line up for a competitive match between each other, that was the calibre on offer at the Victoria Stadium old sports

hall. This just moments after a first division clash between Marble Arc and Elite Travel that had seen two top teams in the league battle it out to the end in a highly contested match. A match in which itself had seen the coaches of the Under 17, and those assisting, clash one against the other in a highly skilled, tactical match full of energy and intensity. A precursor of what was to come on the courts next.

The second division match was not to disappoint. Actually, for neutral observers, there was little to differentiate between first

and second division except for the age and experience of the players. With most players already having undergone intensive training during the past six months, coached and ready to play an international level championship the game play going to be fast and furious. However, friendly enough between both to be very disciplined and easy to officiate. After most players had been team mates in the national squad during the past six months.

The fast paced, quick passing style coached at national level was soon to be

seen as both teams steamed up and down the courts looking for points. The energy in jumping to intercept, to collect and receive, and the positioning in open space, or creating open space was a pure delight to see from very early on from the young ladies.

The match momentarily had a cold bucket of water poured over it when national player Joelle twisted her ankle and had to be taken off. Her injury keeping her out throughout the match to the dismay and fears of the national coaches watching by the touchline.

Netball

The energy in the game was very evident with both teams matching each other’s pace ball to ball, throw for thrown, pass for pass. The first quarter saw little in way of splitting the two sides with the first quarter ending 5-5.

With both teams playing fast quick passing game, and working on getting the better positioning on the court it was not until the last few minutes of the first half that Alwani took control of the match and slowed down the pace deliberately.

This afforded them a 3 point lead which they were unable to hold in full, seeing Eastgate respond to their moment of dominance with their own. The first half ended 14-13 narrowly in favour of Agones-Alwani.

The third quarter saw a change in the tide of the game as Eastgate suddenly increased the pace and started gaining ground through very effective interceptions to take the lead to 20-16. Agones-Alwani for a while unable to find their rhythm as they were stunned by the loss of points.

The latter soon refocused their game and assisted by some excellent intercepts in defence clawed back the points and stopped the rush of baskets.

As Alwani found its way back in, Eastgate once again turned the tables in what was ending to be a very balanced,

23rd February 2016 equally fought match, but equally entertaining.

As the match entered the final minutes of the quarter and with Eastgate ahead by four points anyone would have thought that the match was heading one way. Once again fast pace, quick movements into space and a battle over who could get the most intercepts saw Agones-Alwani fight back. With just a minute to go the match was at 23-23. Eastagte won a point placing them ahead with just seconds to go.

Agones-Alwani were not to be beaten and pushed ahead with four seconds to go they collected the ball and to the cheers and celebrations of the small crowd that had attended the 24-24 was recorded on the very final buzzer.

The scorer of the last basket jumped in joy as if she had just won a cup final, the match which pitted the national team players one against each other was more than just a second division title fight, it was a matter of pride to claim publicly their position in the national team playing in March.

The small crowd stood and applauded both teams for the exhilarating finale which they had just witnessed. A prelude of what Gibraltar can expect to witness in the coming weeks as the same young ladies represent Gibraltar in the European Championship.

oaches, managers and heads of associations have to sometimes make hard decisions, and this Friday the Under 17 National team saw once such decision which was going to bring the young girls back to earth. Just a week from having been chosen to play for the National team at the European Champions to be held in Gibraltar, and after a performance in the second division clash of the two top teams in the same division, composed mainly of Under 17 players, the young ladies were now in a confident mood which the coaches were about to put a realism guidance mark on.

Six months of training had been hard work, and had build a team spirit among the girls, yet they had yet to be really tested on the court and on Friday Gibraltar Netball ensured that they were.

A selection of some of the best players in division one gathered to play a friendly against the Under 17 squad. The match was anything but friendly as the more experienced first team players played to win every ball, every space and every minute of the match, giving little to no ground away. The Under 17s were beatable and more or less that was a lesson that the national team coaches were more than willing to remind the team of. To win the European Championship they would need to face criticism, face the possibility of losing, and still find a place to up their game and battle to win. The friendly match had one advantage, the young players were being coached by the players they were playing against, by the umpires, by the coaches, they were being constructively criticised and constructively analysed in every step of the way. This was a lesson which they had required, and one which Gibraltar Netball was willing to give. The young girls improved with every period of the match, and went away with lessons learnt which in the next few weeks they will have to digest and put into their own game if they are to do Gibraltar proud.

CoreSportgib Nine teams competed in the Interschool tournament organised by the Gibraltar Netball Association and the Department of Education at the Tercentenary Sports Hall on Saturday. The teams were divided into two groups, the Championship division and the Challenge division, giving players from different levels a chance to participate.

Teams from St Joseph’s, Bishop Fitzgerald, Loreto and St Bernard’s took part in what was an exciting Saturday of netball for the youngsters as teams competed in a round robin series of matches throughout Saturday afternoon.

The tournament started of with an exhibition display by the Under 17 Gibraltar Netabll national squad. The young ladies who had this week been in full training, had played a major second division match and been thrown at the deep end on Friday in a friendly against a select team from the first division demonstrated their warm up display before the tournament started. Many of the young players watching imitating them as they watched from the stand.

The tournament saw Loretto Red Hawks come out as eventual Interschool Championships Winners with Bishop Green as the runners-up. St Bernards School were the Challenge Cup winners with Loreto’s yellow Hawks coming out runner up. The Challenge cup Best player award went to Ella Stewart Montegriffo, with Runner up being Sofia Brinkman. CoreSportgib The season was now really over with Sovereign Insurance Scorpions having already been guaranteed the league title after entering the match with seven consecutive wins.

Inline Framing Sharks were really no match against Sovereign Insurance Scorpions, at least not in the first three quarters of the match. It was not until Scorpions were already 24-5 up that they allowed their grip on the game to go and let the Sharks in to narrow the gap to 25-15.

Dubious handling by Sharks had let them down as they lost many a ball to Scorpions attacker who run at them, scoring four tries. Sharks were not far behind with their three tries, but their kick conversions just did not materialise. A factor which could have easily have changed the score line in their favour.

Although still very much a Super IVs league match, the result itself was unimportant to the final outcome, Scorpions had already successfully defended the title in the previous fortnight. The match against Sharks merely emphasised Scorpions dominance throughout the season. The match on Thursday was not to be any different. Scorpions runners tore through the Sharks defence many a time, as their fast past flanks attempted to

CoreSportgib play for the touchline.

Scorpions proved that they were more interested in completing tries than the actual easy points opting throughout to attack for the tries rather than opt for drop kicks or penalty kicks which they could have with ease.

With eight consecutive wins under their belt, and only one defeat at the start of the season Scorpions had already notched their name in the Super IV trophy steaming ahead in the league.

Scorpions demonstrated the reasons behind their successful season from early in the start of the match which saw them go ahead with an early try. They let Sharks come back with their own, only to increase the pressure and add three more. Scorpions, unlike Sharks played on speed, opening the ball wide to run at the opened up Sharks defence, and driving their men through to the touchline.

Sharks, however, did not capitulate to the to-be crowned champions and forced through their own tries by pinning Scorpions back into their own last third for the latter part of the second half. Driving through, and battling it out within yards of the touchline for a prolonged period of time.

Scorpions, however, absorbed the pressure even knowing that the score line was irrelevant to the final outcome as they had come prepared to be pronounced Champions of the Super IV league. The win to them was just as important even in this the final match before receiving their trophy confirming their seasons success.

Pride in defeat

T

he Gibraltar women’s national team might have left the pitch defeated after conceding three to the Royal Air Force women’s first team. However, they had left an impression on the pitch which baffled even the RAF team, who were not disappointed with what they saw, but could not understand why they had not been able to play in the same way as the year before.

Only last year the RAF had comprehensively beaten the

Gibraltar team by 9-0. This time round they were only able to score three, two of them only towards the end as the Gibraltar selection tired, not used to a full pitch match.

Gibraltar started slowly, with the team trying to find its place on the pitch. Not used to playing eleven aside on an eleven aside pitch, the team found it hard to settle down, allowing the RAF girls to get a goal. Their pressure paid off as they went 0-1 up within the first five minutes of the start thanks to a goal from Ashleigh Mackenzie.

23rd February 2016

Gibraltar pressed forward and re-ignited their focus on the game keeping the score at one nil. Gibraltar, were however, found to be limited in their attacking options as they couldn’t finalise in the last quarter.

Good running from Charlyann Pizzarello down the left wing caused the RAF problems. The GFA who had progressed a lot sicne last year won several corners and free kicks and piled the pressure inside the RAF half for 10-15 mins. It was, however GFA’s goalkeeper Kyrelle Revagliatte who was to be the star when she

The keeper stayed on the field even though she had received a kick in the face.

The RAF, who were stronger and more disciplined having played more often together, this being the RAF first team selection, performed better towards the latter stages of the match. Unlike the Gibraltar team the RAF are already very experienced at playing a full eleven aside match on a full pitch. The last two goals came in the last quarter of the match.

Gibraltar had a chance go

narrowly wide, yet were unable to score as the ball fell just past the wrong side of the post. Keeper Kyrelle was to prove her worth again throughout the second half as she kept her goal clear through most of the second half.

Gibraltar, although having several chances begun to lose possession and were on the backfoot letting Keri Haywood and Zara McIntosh’s score for the RAF who eventually won 30.

The match left some of the RAF players wondering what

had gone wrong with their game play, yet it was their own coach and players who later spoke of the improvements they had seen in Gibraltar which led to such a vast change in fortunes. Gibraltar’s young team had developed further in their football, and with more football being played in the leagues, and the young girls settling into the game, the team has seen a change in their attitude and game play which is beginning to take shape with better performances in every match.

A highly balanced match in which Manchester 62 had more of the possession but only narrowly.

With strong winds the midday match was very much influenced by the weather with few shots at goal. The few coming mostly from Manchester 62. The latter, however, had difficulties reaching the last third with most of the play staying in that centre third of the pitch.

Manchester 62, however, went on to win 4-0.

In the other Under 17 match Lincoln convincingly beat Lynx by 9-0 under the blistering windy conditions of early weekend.

Cannon outgunned by Lynx click here to see full gallery collection in our website

23rd February 2016

CoreSportgib What was supposed to be an easy game for Lynx started off being anything but that as Cannon held on to a 1-0 deficit for over 10 minutes, and even threatened to score.

Lynx, who had clearly entered the match confident that they would win, were forced to step up their game to mark their dominance on the court. In just a few minutes they spelled it out to Cannon. Showing the latter who had the real firepower by producing three consecutive goals that demoralised Cannon in an instant.

Lynx, pushed forward and scored a further two as they made a game change which saw them move a front man to the very goal mouth and roam free in front of goal. The tactic worked as they stretched Cannon who had decided on a man to man system forcing a space between the last man and the three others who were chasing the passing game between three Lynx players.

The tactic forced open gaps which saw Cannon’s last man having to face two oncoming players, the one he was following and the one who had broken through onto goal.

By half time Lynx were already 9-0 up and happy to ease off the pressure. Lynx dictated the pace throughout as Cannon knew there was little to no chance they would catch up, let alone have any chance of winning.

Lynx by half-time ensuring that everyone knew that it was them who had the firepower in this game.

23rd February 2016

CoreSportgib In a match played in the unusual time of a weekday evening, first placed St Joseph’s stepped up to take on fifth placed Pheonix, who themselves have been riding high after some key results in the past few weeks.

The first moments of the game saw St Joseph’s take the lead before Gibraltar Pheonix came back, only to see them go behind again, come back to equal terms again and then start losing ground as St Joseph’s took the game by the scruff of the neck.

St Joseph were already 7-3 up during the second half when Gibraltar Pheonix re-ignited themselves and started to claw back the lost ground. Pheonix were led forward by the controversial Ledesma, who this week saw Scorpions abandon a match after a penalty was given in his favour. Ledesma, who himself scored a hat-trick, pushed his team forward giving them the vociferous encouragement required to lift the team up.

Within a space of a minute Gibraltar Pheonix put the match at 7-6 showing that they were not to be taken lightly.

The high intensity match between the leaders and fifth placed Pheonix saw how St Joseph’s responded with their own three goals within a two minute space. At 10-7 they marked down why they were league leaders notching a further two goals and keeping Pheonix away from scoring.

Game 2 - St Joseph collect easy points from Manchester

St Joseph’s went on to play against Manchester 62 on Sunday, just three days after beating Pheonix. In what was a very one sided affair, with St Joseph’s going ahead by 5-0 within the first ten minutes. Somehow Manchester 62 kept the score at 5-0 for the next 9 minutes. With St Joseph’s bombarding them left, right and centre, Manchester 62

only had one attempt at goal. The sixth goal came with 42 seconds to go of the first half, with the ball firmly driven to the top corner away from the keeper.

Just thirty seconds later St Joseph’s were awarded a free kick close to goal. A quick pass to the side and the ball was driven in low for the seventh.

The second half saw the match continue much in the same way, with Manchester defending against the continued attacks from St Joseph’s. With the latter going 10-0 up the match transcended into arguments with officials, mainly from Manchester 62 who questioned the officials decisions.

Manchester 62 had two chances at goal saved by Saints keeper who kept them out.

With Saints clearly dominating the match even the keeper ventured forward in attack.

However, in one of this five man attacks Manchester collected the ball and their counter ended with St

Joseph’s conceding a penalty and having one of their players send off. This was Manchester’s chance to score, which they did.

Even with one man less St Joseph’s continued to dominate play not giving Manchester any clear chance at goal, and pressing forward to increase their 101 tally. St Joseph’s got another goal to make it 11-1

to Manchester’s dismay.

As the minutes ticked away Manchester were nowhere near capable of getting a second, the three outfield men of St Joseph dominating the pace as if they had not lost anyone on the field.

The final score ended in 111, in what was an easy win for St Joseph’s.

Scorpions stung my Ledesma powerhouse game click here to see full gallery collection in our website

23rd February 2016

CoreSportgib After the controversial Rock Cup tie last week between Scorpions and Gibraltar Phoenix, both teams faced each other in the league this weekend, both fielding a full set of players, Scorpions still with Dani Wink in goal.

The match was to end up being one of the classics of the season, with twists and turns, drama and all sorts which would have seen any neutral watching at his feet.

An end to end match in which it was not until the last minutes that a clear winner emerged.

The first chance of the match fell to Scorpions when Pilli struck wide, unable to turn the ball around the post, just feet away.

The intensity of the match was clear from the start. Scorpions had the initial chances in the first few minutes unlike last weeks match which saw them two behind by the fourth minute.

However, it was Pheonix who broke the deadlock, and just after four minutes as if to signal their intent.

Their first attack on Scorpions goal brought the one-nil. Just seconds later Ledesma was foiled by Wink who saved at blank range.

Scorpions, who now have most of the former Lincoln players, enjoyed a good spell when Hanafi pulled back the goal and scored the equaliser. Although injured, he immediately followed the first by rounding the keeper and slotting in the second for the 2-1.

Scorpions with Hanafi and Karim combining well seemed to have taken on the style of Lincoln and were easing into the match, but just as Pheonix keeper kept the ball out, Scorpions

were stung again and saw Pheonix equalise and with just a minute to go for half time go ahead 3-2.

Scorpions started the match attacking but their dominance was marred by their defensive play which saw them slow returning to defend as a team.

With the score at 4-4 Pheonix saw their key player Ledesma take centre stage terrorising Scorpions up

front.

Playing at Scorpions key weakness, their lack of defensive response, Ledesma was receiving the ball and countering, many a time the result seeming to depend on who would win the challenge between Wink, Scorpions keeper and Ledesma.

Ledesma who had played from the back in the first half changed tactics and led

literally from the front. Even with Azziz starting to stay behind, Ledesma power drives, running into the defence and going for goal saw Phoenix go in front taking the score to 6, then 7, 8, 9, 10 and finally the eleventh, all with Ledesma either scoring or being a key part of the play. Even though Scorpions responded with their own three, a lacklustre effort in defence cost Scorpions the match, losing

11-7.

The controversial Ledesma, had this time, focused on his game rather than focusing on his well known complaints against his own team mates and officials which had moved the focus away from his value in turning Phoenixs fortunes in more than one match. Deep runs, pulling back, or even staying up front to collect and run at goal. Ledesma

showed that it was his capacity to turn the game around that provided Phoenix with the tools that saw them win three precious points. Four goals in eight minutes with two assists after he had broken Scorpions defence had literally turned a match in which Scorpions looked like candidates to win, into a defeat that brought the latter down to earth with a bang.

Scorpions who are still three points clear of Pheonix whilst reinforcing their team with former Lincoln players have also inherited some of Lincolns weaknesses, one of which was a slow return to defend from their players. Scorpions, who have still to gel together, nevertheless provided enough evidence as to why they continue within the top four teams in the futsal first division.

Lincoln lose their pace CoreSportgib

Football

J

ust a week ago Lincoln Red Imps run riot around Britannia putting five past them in the Rock Cup tie, with Britannia only get one back in a bizzare series of mistakes. Britannia, managerless, Brazilianless were just a semblance of their pre-January selves. In just a week, things had changed.

Now with a new manager by the touchline there was a new air in the feel of Britannia, a discipline in their play. Yet it was not Britannia that stirred the biggest surprise. It was Lincoln Red Imps who on this chilly Monday night were anything but the team that had terrorised defences throughout the season.

Lincoln came into the match controlling the pace.

23rd February 2016

Unfashionably for them by slowing the pace down and playing back through defence. The first half saw very little of Lincolns wide crosses, changes of pace, or movement which opened defences throughout the season with great effect.

Lincoln instead were opting to play a tight close game, passing short and making Britannia chase the ball. For the first thirty minutes

Lincoln only had a couple of chances at goal. Smack on the half hour they rose out of the slow pace pit they had created and started to attack in earnest. It was however, not until after Britannia had a chance to score well saved by Navas that Lincoln actually did one of their sweeping runs down the flank breaking past defenders and opening up the defence. A low driven

cross into the middle was met by Cabreras who met the ball with a swinging on the run kick which Barnfather had little chance of stopping for the 1-0.

The second half saw Lincoln come out with greater intent, at least for a period of time. This time they started to move with greater pace and determination. Running down the flanks and crossing wide to change

flanks before putting in crosses, or hammering the ball towards the target. Barnfather lived a charmed life as the crosses many a time ended in his hands, or headers were put just over the bar or in one case the driven strike hit the crossbar only to bounce well out of the danger area. Barnfather had to make at least three good saves. In one instance a curled freekick to the near

CoreSportgib post saw Barnfather lunge towards the ball punching it clear past the post for a corner to the praise of his defence who had been squarely beaten by the free kick.

As the minutes ticked on, and with Lincoln unable to score Liam Walker was brought onto the field, his first appearance for several weeks.

Lincoln instead of finding their rhythm went to sleep, which is the only way one could describe it. Britannia who had been pinned back, were beginning to gain ground inch by inch as Lincoln players started to slow down and find less and less space through lack of movement. The lacklustre display shown by Lincoln players even had their supporters on the stand calling for them to wake up. Lincoln had not only lost their pace, but were bundling together in the middle with fewer, and fewer balls going across wide to change flanks, and lesser and lesser movement from players to create the space they are so well known for.

Lincoln were lucky not to concede a goal when Britannia started to get closer and closer to Navas’ goal. Luckily for Lincoln Britannia’s firepower has itself drained since the departure of their Brazilian stars and their effectiveness in front of goal was far from threatening.

Lincoln took the points, but could have just as easily have conceded points as their form seemed to slump momentarily against Britannia.

Lions tamed

Lions faced three rivals on Friday night on the same very pitch, Europa who continue to playing for top points in case Lincoln slip up, a near gale force wind that decided much of play, and themselves.

Having come from a defeat at the hands of Manchester 62 which knocked them out of the cup Lions had little to play for this season except pride, too far in points from second placed Europa for there to be any realistic hope of a European spot if it were to emerge. Europa for their part are still playing to secure second place and be

within reach of the leaders in case they slip up. A runners up spot could secure a place in Europe if Lincoln were to win the Rock cup and League, therefore making second place as lucrative as winning the cup.

Europa started the match controlling the flow of play passing from deep in the area and playing through midfield. They seemed to be in no rush to venture forward making the pace of the game slow and unexciting to watch. The wind played a major factor as a sweeping near gale force wind, steered the ball from its

normal trajectory.

A decision by Europa keeper and captain to play with the wind to their backs was probably the first good decision Europa had made towards victory. The wind assisted their play as Lions continued to rely on trying to find Lata with long balls. Lions Polish keeper also found himself lacking in his kick as ball after ball were lost in the air as his kicks didn’t get beyond the half way mark. Whilst Europa had instead opted to play the ball low on the ground and their use of aerial play was very much a controlled affair.

Although Europa had very few attempts at goal, Alex Quillo was the first to strike as he received a ball on the edge of the box to the far right. Striking it at chest height and without too much power behind his shot the ball found itself in the back of the net as the wind played its part to put it past the polish keeper.

Not long after Montero found Leiva at the edge of the box who took a leaf out of Quillo’s book and made a similar attempt at goal. The ball once again slipping past Szpilczynski for the 2-0.

Lions came out in the second half with greater belief and with the wind behind them. For an initial period in the second half Lions threatened Arevalo’s goal forcing him into several good saves as corner cross, long balls in and high shots at target seemed to float uncontrollably towards the target aided by the wind. For a while Lions looked as if they could score.

Arevalo ensured his goal was cleared allowing Europa space to regroup and reignite their attack. The third was soon to follow as once again a shot from

outside the area, driven low to the far post slipped past the keeper, who was once again showing some of his weaknesses. Lions were deflated but not out of the game altogether.

Lions soon lost their vociferous manager when officials, tired of his constant arguing and complaining to the linesman by the touchline, which he had been doing throughout the first half, warned him to stop. The subsequent vociferous response to the fourth official prompted the referee to ask him to leave the bench and go to the stands.

CoreSportgib Lions tried to press forward, against an Europa who were happy to control the ball in midfield and not have to exert themselves too much. Relying only on trying to get the forwards running at the ball Lions were losing the battle with the wind as well as themselves.

Their lack of foresight on how to play the ball with a wind assisting its flight became obvious as a freekick was floated to the right only to see it run out. Crosses from the left ended in similar circumstances, losing Lions the chance to get close to Arevalo’s goal.

Their lack creativity to open up Europa’s defence, or use the wind in their favour saw them lose another three points as Europa took three crucial points keeping them at touching distance from Lincoln, at least mathematically.

Lynx unlucky not to take a point

The weather conditions had caused havoc in the previous two first divisions matches this weekend, and St Joseph’s and Lynx came into the match knowing that they faced a hard challenge. St Joseph and Lynx both fighting for that third place in the league.

St Joseph’s were already three points clear before the start and were to see their difference increase by

another three as they defended a 1-0 score line throughout most of the match.

The first quarter of the match saw St Joseph’s attack Lynx’s goal rewarded with two corners in just ten minutes. Both were to result in little more than a lesson on the effects of the wind on the ball.

Lynx played a short passing game out of their area as

they ensured that they did not lose the ball to the wind.

In the fifteenth minute controversy struck when St Joseph’s had a player brought down within the Lynx penalty area. Referee Jason Barcelo was unwilling to point at the penalty spot and instead decided to give a free kick just outside the box.

Lynx’s national keeper Robba was caught off guard

by the wind conditions when the shot from the free kick by Lopez directed itself to target only to accelerate into the top far corner for the first and only goal.

St Joseph’s decided to retreat and formed a defensive line which was to hold for the next hour and a quarter to the end. Lynx had most of the possession, but a fixed back four from St Joseph’s proved too much to

beat for Lynx who hardly tested Perez.

St Joseph’s played the defensive posture throughout, using the fact they had the wind behind them in the second half to their advantage.

Lynx, who now have little to play for than just pride could not overcome the one-nil deficit even though they pressed St Joseph back into their area. Lynx battled not

just against the wind, but the fact St Josephs had decided to stay deep in their area. On every counter when St Joseph ventured forward Lynx were met with a solid back four which did not venture beyond their halfway line.

Albert Parody, Lynx’s manager/owner could not be found at fault for his tactics. Substituting Montenegro Parody and sending in

Doxagarat who soon made his mark by running deep into St Joseph’s area only to be caught narrowly offside. Parody’s choice of trainers was, however, a small talking point as the soles lit up with blue lights during the match.

Moments later Doxagarat had a shot blocked by the St Joseph’s defence. His next run saw him reach the touchline, and cross in to the other substitute, Capoy, whose header fell into Perez’s arm’s, who had stayed firm in his spot.

Doxagarat was then to see his shot go just over the bar as he broke through St Joseph’s left defence.

Lynx started to lose their momentum towards the end as their frustrations at not getting into St Joseph’s final third saw them reacting to the referees decisions and the baiting by some St Joseph’s players. All of which delayed play in favour of St Joseph’s.

The latter seemed intend to secure their three points with just one goal, even though Lynx had the capacity to turn the game. As Lynx lost their focus, St Joseph’s had a couple of chances to increase the lead. They, nevertheless, kept four at the back at all times. This prevented Lynx from a proper counter attack as they faced a flat four which kept up their zonal marking and defending knowing that the midfield had been requested back to defend by their coach.

Late winner for 62

The wind had threatened to still cause chaos on Sunday afternoon, but as luck would have it for both teams the conditions other teams played throughout the weekend were not to materialise for them. The wind slowed down and the sun started to shine. Both teams, must have felt lucky at the end of the match considering the type of game play they both decided to embark upon which would have been severely hampered by high winds.

Manchester 62, a team that had not ignited many sparkling performances

these season was not to inspire much confidence after this match. Embarrassingly for them their manager was to be watching from the stand after he had been send off during the Rock Cup tie the week before. Even more embarrassing one of their younger players faces a possible sanction after being send off, whilst on the subs bench, after being caught by officials in a naive activity which brings the game into disrepute, even more so if it’s found as was later stated that other players do the same. The player was

caught urinating behind the subs bench which is just in front of the main stand. A situation in which the GSLA will itself be forced to look into themselves if found to be true.

Gibraltar United, already known for their very defensive style of game play were not to change modus operandi, and once again seemed to be content parking the bus at the back and playing for the counter attacks.

relegation battle match of the weekend. With both Gibraltar United and Manchester 62 secure for the time being, but failing to spark their seasons campaign beyond the bottom half of the table the match was crucial to both teams to ensure they were save from relegation.

Gibraltar United played in their usual defensive style, keeping Manchester 62 out of the danger zone effectively throughout most of the first half, and into the second half.

Neither Mateo, former

Angels keeper and now with Manchester, who played his first match for the first team for Manchester, nor Goldwyn, who is seen by many observers as the keeper who should be chosen for the forthcoming international match by the national squad, were to be called upon much during the first half.

Robert Montovio, the only front man Gibraltar United seemed to count on, was the only real weapon up front for United. His role was relegated to chasing balls upfront against a tight Manchester defence who

were to keep him under tabs throughout the match.

Manchester 62 pressed forward from the start but their failings during the earlier part of the season seemed to show up with little in the way of any creativity in midfield which would open the way for the Manchester forwards, namely Toncheff to find a way to target. A couple of chances were well saved by El Chino, but with few openings as Manchester tried to chase balls into the middle, Toncheff and Co found few chances to hit the target.

CoreSportgib

Football

Gibraltar United also failed to capitalise themselves when they had the wind behind them. Several corners and free kicks in which they could have threatened Manchester’s goal were cleanly cleared by the Manchester defence without too many problems.

The first half finished 0-0 with neither team really having had any real goal scoring opportunities.

Manchester 62 started the second half more fired up

23rd February 2016

than Gib Utd, and launched a series of attacks which saw balls driven through the middle for Toncheff to chase. However, Gib Utd were soon to take a momentary control of the match as Manchester’s game play became monotonous and predictable, with United effectively closing down the middle of defence and keeping Toncheff away from the area.

It was not until the latter part of the match when Toncheff changed momentarily to

chase and run from the right flank that Manchester did get through.

Toncheff who was proving to be a handful, but had been kept in- check in the centre, soon became a real threat as he outpaced the defence on the flanks. Reaching the touchline from a counter, his cross to the centre was met by Mikey who struck the ball low and with power past a fully outstretched Chino for the one nil. The keeper had little chance

of reaching the ball that had gone through his defence like a hot knife through melted butter.

Gibraltar United who had been defending for the draw were found wanting as they sought to get the equaliser, to no avail. A change in tactics towards the end of the match with Pitu already in the shower meant that they had few options upfront to provide Montovio with any opening to goal.

The loss of the three points, although damaging, still

leaves United three points clear from Glacis, but with everything still to play for if they are not to be caught up and sank deeper into the relegation battle.

Gibraltar United must keep up, at the minimum, with the same pace of both Angels and Glacis to secure their position, any failure to do so could see them dropping into the relegation places.

After the final whistle Gibraltar United’s coaching staff were observed in a confrontation with one of the

linesman after accusing the latter of having been at fault for the defeat. The incident saw main the main official and the manager of Gibraltar United having to intervene moving the United staff member away. Gibraltar United’s manager immediately apologised for the incident to both the first official and the linesman who had been met with a barrage of criticisms with some words spoken between the two.

The battle

T

he 5pm fixture on Saturday would not have raised many eyebrows prior to the start of the second round of the First division, but with Glacis United and Angels both having refreshed their squads successfully the match was one not of relegation, but who would stay up? Could both do so?

Both teams had come up with new signings which were turning the heads of many, both sides making their mark in the Rock Cup reaching the quarter finals. Angels having shown they

can now play football with confidence with their last victory against Gibraltar United, another of the struggling clubs at the foot of the table.

Glacis United, for their part have seen their season turned inside out from being the team everyone expected to put five or six past them to the side teams now fear due to their counter attacking style of play. A style of football which saw them put seven past Bruno Magpies earlier in the week.

The match itself was in some doubt as to whether it

would start as officials checked on the wind conditions. High winds sweeping across the pitch seemed perilously close to ensuring the match would be abandoned, but official referee Herbert Warwick seemed to think otherwise.

Angels kicked off demonstrating that they were not going to be defending their goal all throughout the match. A quick counter by Mena drove the ball onto target with Glacis keeper saving in the very first few seconds of the match.

to stay up Glacis responded with their own attack at goal with Tovar alone on goal missing a good chance.

The match was firmly balanced between both sides, the wind playing havoc with passes and control of the ball. Glacis keeper Simon found out early what effects the wind had on the ball when a kick into the air from Angels dropped in front of him and what should have been an easy catch saw the ball swirling and bouncing high over him to just drop outside the near post.

It was in the 19th minute that Glacis turned the match in their favour, playing against the wind, as they found themselves running into Angels penalty area. Sastrie, who had been a menace until then was clearly shoved to the ground as he was clean on goal. The striker took the penalty himself and slotted it in with ease, but not without keeper Filoho getting the tips of his fingers to it.

The Brazilian keeper was to prove himself an Angel in goal as he went on to make some spectacular saves throughout the match to

keep Glacis out.

It was Glacis keeper Simons turn to show that he was a capable stopper when a curled ball from a free-kick forced him to stretch for a save to corner.

Glacis once again responded with a quick attack, a lobbed ball over Filoho seeing the first spectacular save as he dived back and cleared the ball with a punch off his lines to a corner.

Filoho was however, caught out on the 41st minute when a freekick from the edge of the box was driven to target,

with the wind braking its progress Filoho was forced to double back for a ball that looked like going out and clear his line, this time the ball rebounded off the crosssbar. Sastrie, who had already shown himself to be a good poacher came in to header the rebound into the back of the net for the second.

The second half started with both sides playing against the wind. The swirling wind saw many a bouncing ball

just fly up into the air and over players who kept on missing clearances and high balls. The conditions of the game, allowed both teams to turn the match into a scrappy affair with some very ugly tackling taking place. The official was forced to intervene and give out a total of ten yellow cards, plus a red to Angel’s Fernandez. Angels this week showing another facet to their game which was not pleasing to see. Their diving for a foul

also among one of the key points those watching were very critical of.

Angels pressed on Glacis but found it difficult to play against the wind having few chances to force a goal. Glacis for their part were finding that their counter attacking low drives forward where stretching their own forwards, with the ball far too fast to collect in many occasions.

It was not until around the

80th minute that Angels actually broke through the solid Glacis defence, with Simon forced to make a miraculous block save .

It was on the 84th minute that Nunez who had just come on for Cortes was put into space on the left and as Filoho came out to block slotted the ball to the keepers left for the third and final goal.

Just seconds later Nunez nearly scored a fourth as he

once again found space only to see the keeper save this time.

The match ended in 3-0 for Glacis, once again spelling out their intend of staying in the first division. Angels, who at the end of the transfer window changed nearly their whole squad, once again faced defeat after two weeks of winning. However, their style of play demonstrated marked improvement which will prove difficult to beat as the team gels together.

The wind was a constant factor throughout the match which saw maintenance staff at the stadium having to clear the white plastic border stripes from the side of the pitch as the wind blew them onto the pitch. The swirling winds, and constant battering from the high winds saw the ball making many unpredictable paths which left players kicking at the air or jumping well short from being able to clear.

CoreSportgib

CoreSportGib is a digital weekly sports news publication for Gibraltar. It is published on a weekly basis and can be read online, or offline using the Issuu.com digital publishing platform.

CoresportGib is a publication created by Core Photography who have been actively dedicated as photojournalist in Gibraltar since the launch of our service in early 2014.

As part of our service we launched www.corephotographygibr altar.com, our image collection online service

Over 5,000 unique users every month return to our site on nearly a daily basis, and with over 250,000 page views a month the photographic collection has become a mainstream media information service for many users.

Recently Core Photography opted to divert its attention from main stream news to sports recognizing the need to fill a gap in the

market in which sports reporting was limited in Gibraltar.

The success of our Coresport galleries led us to seek new forms of keeping readers informed on sports news stories. This led us to the creation of a weekly digital review magazine, CORESPORTGIB

We have since refocused our objectives and Core Photography's services have been aligned to provide a full sports coverage through its various platforms, moving away from main stream everyday political news to sports news.

We are exclusively dedicated to Sports news coverage and reporting.

The digital publication itself can be viewed through three different platforms, allowing readers to choose their preferred option.

The main publication which allows for hyperlinks within adverts will be uploaded to our issuu.com/coresportgib platform. Providing a

unique reader experience where traditional magazine reading meets digital technology.

The magazine can also be read on multiple mobile devices, desktop and offline. It can even be printed if you prefer to read it on paper.

We provide options for the magazine to be downloaded in full.

The page spreads are also available at our Facebook page at Coresportgib as one of our image albums which will allow readers to share, comment, download, save or basically do as they generally do when interacting with social media.

Being a part of Core Photography, which has its own website www.corephotographygibr altar.com, the digital magazine will also see the page spreads published online as part of our online collections.

What does all this mean to you the advertiser?

Simply speaking Core

Photography has created and is developing further a way of targetting the sports community, and groups associated to, actively participating or have a part in sports in Gibraltar.

These community has few boundaries except the sports itself.

They come from all walks of life, all political sectors, workplaces and social structures.

Sports is the one place where you can have a company director mixed with public servants or any mix of genders, social groupings with little to differentiate them between each other.

Most sportsmen and women in Gibraltar are dedicated to their sport but come from other fields of work. They work, buy, shop, travel, buy property, could be running a small company or even a large corporation. The one thing that brings them together is sport.

For the advertiser this is a perfect avenue through which to target a global market which in itself has a multitude of smaller target audiences which can be reached.

It means that there is also now a publication which

does not rely on political news stories, or headline news to attract a large social group.

Sportsmen and women, like everyone else, like to read about themselves, their clubs or associations and their own sport.

Relatives and friends like to read about their loved ones achievements.

Sports enthusiasts like to keep up with what is happening.

This is where CoreSportGib comes in, it provides this service to our readers, and therefore creates for you the advertiser that unique target audience you might want to attract.

In the near future Coresportgib will spread its distribution even further as it seeks to widen its market and reach new audiences interested in Gibraltar related sports stories.

Our stats show that since the launch of CoreSportGib as a digital publication it has been growing in readership every week, with every publication in our archives increasing in readership weeks after as well.

We have at present an average of 1900 readers

for the magazine alone on our issuu.com/coresportgib platform. With stats showing that over 45% do more than just flick through the pages.

We acknowledge that many readers will just read titles and look at the images, however, that is why we focus our attention on images and layouts, not just stories.

Our presence in Facebook also sees over our reach increased with anything from 1500 - 6,000 users reached at any given week.

Our objective is not to provide hyped up stats saying we have 18,000 or even 100,000 likes as likes do NOT provide evidence of readership just that someone has clicked on the like button at some stage when they have viewed your page.

Instead we seek to reach as high a number of readers as we can. Our main aim is to create an organic readership base which comes back to read us every week and whose loyalty will generate its own organic increase in the readership.

A happy reader is a valueable reader to both us and YOU THE ADVERTISER.

The inclusion of third and fourth division team players has led to some criticism after players from third division leaders Titans have been left out of the squad. Titans who last December beat Rock 54 (seen as the Under 21 squad) by 5-3 have a 100% record in the league, six points ahead of second placed Rock 54 and

23rd February 2016 with their top goal scorer, Olivero also the division’s top scorer.

The announcement of the selected players has led to social media criticisms over the exclusion of some players some believe should have been had a try out at least.

It has also been raised that some players have been approached to play for the national team but have rejected the offer, opting out of being selected.

Hockey - Henwood gets injured

Gareth Henwood will be off for two weeks after sustaining a calf injury during his latest match for San Fernando.

Henwood will be out for two weeks, although it coincides with a two week rest period he was due to take anyway after playing in a series of matches one after another.

The former national player has been placed in the midfield due to his contribution as a playmaker. In his last match he provided three assists.

San Fernando in the meantime played against Grammarians on Sunday in Cadiz. The Andalucia league team, presently riding high, proved too strong for the

Europa let 24 point lead slip through their fingers

Basketball - Europa let 24pt slip

Europa let a chance to take points from Isola Blue Stars slip during an Under 16 clash last week which saw

Europa lose a 24 point advantage due to the temper of some of the players.

Europa, who had showed up with just five players were able to take a comfortable 27 point lead into the third quarter as they played against Isola Blue Star’s seven players, four of which were only Under 14s.

The game changer started when their main ball handler Michael Rodriguez was fouled out in the fourth quarter with just over 5mins left. Europa still in the lead, but one man down were still 24 points in the lead. Europa’s fate went from bad to worse as Stefan Tellez forced the referee to give a disqualifying foul and send him off leaving Europa with only three on court.

Isola Blues Stars coach Timothy Azorpardi ensured that his team did not get embroiled in the heated tension being seen on the court as Europa went on to lose another player leaving them only with two. The 24 point lead soon lost as the players faced the overwhelming odds in trying to hold the match against a determined Isola Blue Stars youngsters.

Isola Blues Stars who had been behind for most of the match eventually came out 77-72 winners, in a match which Europa should have won with ease.
