Lynx speak out against betting companies

A

s football in Gibraltar turns pro a new phenomenon is suddenly emerging which has seen different reactions from within the football world, the new phenomenon is called betting. On a Friday night a young east European enters the stadium, casually dressed, friendly in manner, seats by the area which is for the VIPs, but which is frequently used by everyday fans as it has the best cover from the elements during normal weekly league matches.

A quietly spoken male, who seems to know some of the managers and players, but whose only focus once the game starts, is on delivering the data from the match. Speaking to him you soon find out, as he is quite open about it that he is the regional representative for some betting company dealing in sport. His main region is the Malaga province where he covers events such as the Spanish basketball league, or even the Primera Liga. His main tool is his mobile phone, which he is constantly on during the ninety minutes. Ask him anything on the match and he

will know, most of the time his predictions of how a match will end seem pretty accurate, except when teams put more than ten past the other which leaves him a bit speechless. He is but one of the many people now found attending first division matches, and the numbers will soon grow as the betting industry recruits, for ÂŁ50 per match, representatives willing to sit through matches and provide them with timely updates, scores and data.

There is nothing illegal about the activity; however, it is a clear indicator of the changing world football is living. Whilst teams struggle to pay their players, and clubs try to find new sources to fund their attempts to reach the elite status of becoming a professional outfit, from decades in the amateur sphere, there is an industry which profits from the very existence of a "professional" league in Gibraltar. Already last year The Gibraltar Football Association took steps to warn and educate teams and associated organisations of the risks faced by Gibraltar football if it were to ignore the potential for corruption and the pitfalls from not keeping tabs on the unscrupulous side of the betting industry. None of

which there has a yet been any reports on, but which as the league continues to develop and prosper opens up the possibility of attracting unwanted sectors. In comments to the local media last April Louis Wink, GFA security and integrity officer warned that Gibraltar is at grave risk of match fixing, further adding "In one year we have seen over €4 million bet on the Gibraltar First Division and cup matches. It could be a breeding ground for criminals.” At the time the GFA run community workshops at the John Mackintosh Hall for local team players and officials focussing on the dangers of match fixing. Since then the betting industry has continued to focus its attention on Gibraltar, and received its own condemnation from some quarters, the latest coming from Lynx Marketing & Commercial Director, Jonathan Costa.

Costa, however, a Marketing & Commercial Director of one of these clubs trying to enter that elite status in sports, has his own views on the betting industry. One which looks at the financial gains gained by one industry against what they give back to the same industry they are profiting from. In a lengthy message broadcast on the Lynx FC website Costa comments that "There are now over 34 online gaming companies in Gibraltar because of its generous tax environment, as they have benefited from lower corporation tax, no value added tax on marketing spend and in some cases exemption from gambling duty in the UK – Those who have a UK presence but are based offshore are required to pay POC (point of consumption tax).

”You would think that having such a financial benefit in Gibraltar, one would

be inclined in supporting a local sporting entity or invest in community programmes even if it's just youth academies. Unfortunately this has never been the case and on various occasions, through the media, such information has been blocked or removed completely from an interview and we ask you why?"

Costa claims that Lynx has "encountered many setbacks from the gaming industry when approaching them for sponsorship" pointing out that "they focus on international top platforms and premium rights packages – such as the partnerships with top teams in Europe that gain coverage and visibility on a Pan-European level" and that "Subject to any changes to the current strategy, they do not support alternative requests, neither on national nor on international levels."

Costa questions why the industry turns down local clubs requesting for sponsorship deals when he alleges it "reaps the benefits on our home ground and generate over £2.5 million worth of bets which involved Football clubs in Gibraltar". “It is mind boggling," he adds, "how we have not seen a single penny invested towards Local sponsorship of a sporting entity in Gibraltar but also be removed our rights of expression when highlighting our disappointment through the local media. Is the government taking sides in making sure we do not upset the Gaming industry with the truth? What we will say is this; for as long as we have the right to express our discontent, we will continue to do so until we feel fit and there is no stopping us."

Since entering UEFA Gibraltar’s football has seen greater interest from the international media and sports industry.

Lincoln’s campaign in Europe, where they reached the second round further increased Gibraltar’s presence within the European scene. Gibraltar’s own qualifiers against Germany, Poland and the Republic of Ireland, among others propelled Gibraltar further to the forefront. This is believed to have further increased the interest in Gibraltar football especially amon betting companies based outside GIbraltar, som eof which are based in eastern European states where the regulations are far less stringent.

Gibraltar should bid for 2023 youth games

I

f Gibraltar's sporting fraternity had not yet received enough endorsement in the past week over its facilities and enthusiasm for sport, the Commonwealth Games Association ensured it added its voice to highlight Gibraltar's potential future with sport.

Already the European Athletics had called on Gibraltar to look at the possibility of hosting youth and junior games. With the Island Games already allocated to Gibraltar,

Hockey hosting European Challenge championship matches in May, and Netball hosting this years under 17 International tournament the call from The Commonwealth Association for Gibraltar to bid for the 2023 youth games could only add to the value of Gibraltar's bid towards Sports tourism oriented markets.

Louise Martin, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) during the visit to Gibraltar last week claimed they would be strong contenders if they

decided to put themselves forward.

Just days before the Gibraltar Commonwealth Games Association president had highlighted that although Gibraltar had not bid for the 2021 Commonwealth Youth Games expected to be awarded to Northern Ireland, if the latter pulled out it would put its name forward for it. Speaking to Coresportgib, he had indicated that it was unlikely that Northern Ireland would pull out, but was ensuring that Gibraltar's intentions

were known. He also commented that as yet the association had not officially considered the 2023 Youth Games, although it was in his sights, purely because it was so far away that he required to ensure that the facilities and infrastructure, including the required support from the authorities existed by then.

With Gibraltar already due to host the Small Island Games in 2019 which is expected to bring together over 3,000 athletes from 24

countires with 12 sports, the Commonwealth Youth Games would involve a lesser number with only 1,000 athletes from 71 countries and territories taking part in up to nine sports. Something which has made the CGF look at Gibraltar with in a positive way as a potential bidder.

Speaking to Insidethegames.biz CGF President Louis Martin said "The 2019 Island Games could be Gibraltar's test event."

The Commonwealth

Games Association had a first hand look at Gibraltar's facilities last week when a meeting held in Gibraltar brought together senior officials including Regional Vice Presidents from across the Commonwealth with additional participants visiting for relating committees such as the Sports and Developments committees.

With sports facilities due to be upgraded in line with the requirements for the 2019 Small Island Games, and new training pitches,

running tracks and other facilities already part of a global plan to increase Gibraltar's sports facility capacity, the prospects for Gibraltar sport look considerable bright for the future.

The Commonwealth Games Association of Gibraltar supported the visit last week from the CGF and arranged extracurricular programme of events to engage at the highest level with national and civic political and sporting stakeholders including meeting with the

Gibraltar Government Ministers and officials.

All six regions of the Commonwealth were represented, Mrs Martin (Scotland) was joined by Vice Presidents Bruce Robertson (Canada), Gideon Sam (South Africa) and Kereyn Smith (New Zealand) as well as the Gold Coast 2018 representative, the Hon Medical Advisor, the Legal Advisor the Chief Executive Officer and six Region Vice Presidents representing Africa, Americas, Asia, Caribbean,

his week a selection of young ladies, all of school age will have completed a week of training under the watchful eye of Scottish coaches. This is just the latest of the extensive training regime these young ladies will have gone through since September in a bid to make Gibraltar proud in March.

Since early in September, and with little publicity, the Gibraltar Under 17

national squad has undergone an extensive, three day a week physical and mental preparation as they prepare of the March Under 17 European tournament to be held in Gibraltar.

CoreSportGib was invited to one of their many session. The seemingly young shy girls, very much teenagers when off court side, demonstrated their discipline, determination and enthusiasm for the sport as they were guided through the tough, well

planned training regime. Four coaches watched from the side-lines, and there was little they had to say in the first twenty minutes as the young ladies lined up to warm up. Following the lead from the leaders within their own ranks, the girls followed a sequence of training and warm up routines which very much exemplified the instilled discipline which one would expect from a national squad.

timed, sequence of exercises, saw the many facets of the game required being practised throughout. This was not just a warm up, it was a routine which showed that the young ladies were acting as a team. Mistakes would be corrected from within their own ranks, encouragement would come from within their own ranks, guidance would come from within their own ranks. The coaches watched closely and only in the rare occasions that required them giving advise would they interrupt.

Five months of intensive training had brought the team together as one, and the effects were clear to see at the Tercentenary.

Thos who had had the privilege to watch from the sidelines commented, "I have seen

national teams, and most other sports, but netball seems to have it right. This is probably the best organised, best disciplined team I have seen in many years." The description was echoed not by just the one, but by quite a large number of people who frequent the tercentenary sports hall and have seen the team training.

In March the young ladies will come up against Malta, Republic of Ireland and Switzerland in the Challenge section of the Netball Europe 17 Championships, which will be held between the 4th and 6th March at the Tercentenary Sports Hall.

The hosts, Gibraltar, will be defending their title, won in Malta in the last Championships, and are going to prove that it was not just a one off.

The beauty of sport as ban

he Spanish ban on Gibraltaria n players playing hockey in Spain has been lifted, not that it was actually enacted upon anyway. The news came as no surprise to many in the hockey world who had seen this type of action happen before, only to see Spanish policy turn around later as the sporting world united to challenge the policies.

Most importantly, no one person can take credit for the turn-around, if there was any. Yet there is much to be content with. Little politics was involved, few political manifestations were made, and the situation was resolved by sports not politics. As Coresportgib reported last week, Spanish clubs and organisations directly affected by the warnings issued by the Spanish hockey federation made

their own representations challenging the policy and asking for clarification. Two clubs, in particular, wished to know why the warnings had been issued when the federation itself had accepted the registration of Gibraltarian players into their teams. This evident by the mere fact that the RFEH itself had listed among the San Fernando CH team players Gibraltarian Gareth Henwood as part of the official registered team players.

By Thursday night the situation had been clarified and confirmation had come from the RFEH that any player from Gibraltar could play in Spain, and that friendly matches between Spanish teams and Gibraltar teams could take place as was first broadcasted exclusively by CoreSportGib through its Core Photography news blog.

On Saturday the Gibraltar Hockey Association confirmed that the lifting of

the ban was official. A spokesman for the Association posted in Facebook, "The GHA is pleased to announce that the ban imposed by the Consejo superior de Deportes on Spanish Clubs competing against Gibraltarian clubs has now been lifted. This was confirmed yesterday by the Secretary of the RFEH in writing to our President. We now look forward to continuing what has been a long established sporting friendship."

Rugby

Gibraltar Rugby will this Saturday test themselves against a Jersey Rugby Association Select XV.

The JRA Select XV is a representative team made up of players from the four Jersey clubs competing in the JRA organised Competitions which would include players from Beeches, Buccaneers, Quennevais and United Banks.

The match comes as a stepping stone towards Jersey's own annual clash for the Inter Insular trophy against their counterparts from the Guernsey Rugby Association.

Importantly, and according to Jersey Rugby Association, itself, the clash with Gibraltar will be the first in what is expected to be an annual trophy against the Gibraltar Select XV.

The Gibraltar Veterans (35 years +) is an integral section of the GRFU. A number of the players still regularly play for their clubs in the Super4s league and have had International experience with the National team. The Vets players are often leading the way in passing on their experience to young players stepping up to adult rugby. Obviously at this time in a players career its about as having as much fun off the pitch as it is on it. Gibraltar’s National League is played among four local clubs: Europa Stormers, Straits Sharks, Gibraltar Bay Buccaneers, Rock Scorpions. Matches are played in Gibraltar’s Victoria Stadium as from late last year, with some matches also played at the DTC. The aim of the Super IVs is to give Gibraltar’s young, aspiring rugby players a platform from which to continue their rugby development pathway.

4th February 2016 The last two games were both high scoring matches with the Sovereign Insurance Rock Scorpions beating an under strength Nature Group Europa Stormers by 66 points to 10. It was a fast flowing game with a total of 12 tries, with both teams cancelling each other out in the first 20 minutes, before the Scorpions took control and romped home, the worthy winners.

Remarkably, the other game, between the Kedhlow Gibraltar Bay Buccaneers and the InLine Framing Straits Sharks, also consisted of 12 tries, but it was a much more even contest. Right up until 10 minutes from the end it was neck and neck, at 25 all, before the Sharks broke the deadlock running in three unanswered tries to win the game 42 points to 25.

The Scorpions won the Cup last season, their first piece of silverware, and have been the dominant team this season, having won six of their seven games. They now have an unassailable lead in the league

and will be crowned champions at the last league game of the season on 18th February. As an indication of the competitiveness of the league, however, all Clubs have now been crowned Champions at least once in the last six years, and last year’s winners, the Buccaneers, are currently trailing in last place.

The Cup competition begins on 3rd March, with the final on the 17th of the same month, and it will be interesting to see if the Scorpions can win the double.

All the games this season have been played at Victoria Stadium, which has been great for Gibraltar Rugby, meaning that the games have been open to spectators, and proper posts have been in place for conversions and penalties. Due to the Representative game against Jersey on 6th February, we have postponed Round 8 of the League to 11th February, and this game will now be played at the Devils Tower Camp (DTC).

Street Football

4th February 2016

Street soccer kicks off with tournament T he Street Soccer League started off with the first Winter SSL Cup, but not without its first teething problems. Initially the matches were to be played at Mid Harbours, but this came to a quick stop when the organisers were informed that a paid for league or tournament could not take place at the estate without asking for permission and payment of arranged fees.

This led to a change of location with the GSLA providing allocations at the small concrete pitches, where allocation fees were enforced.

A total of seven teams registered for the warm up tournament. Few rules, no need for proper kits, and normal football rules applied, all of which resembled very much the GFA Futsal leagues.

The mini tournament took off on Saturday with seven teams competing across two of the small pitches.

The matches saw all levels of football on the pitches. The skilled, the not so skilled, the healthy and fit, the I am here for a day's kick about and even the pros playing to hone their skills on a different arena.

The street soccer phenomenon has attracted some interest among those who wish to play but cannot register their interest as they just want to be involved, not committed to the training and other commitments teams under the GFA now experience.

As the first Street Soccer League tournament took place at the Bayside Sports complex, just across the yard, in the old Victoria Stadium sports hall teams battled it out in the third and fourth division of the futsal league, many of the players home grown, young and old, and all playing in their spare time.

Just next door the first division of the futsal league also took place. Seeing all three together Street Soccer resembled the poor man's equivalent, and not necessarily having the effect which people had envisioned from the marketed product, but very much providing an opportunity to players from all levels, and skills who miss out on the regulation registration of the organised GFA seasons.

FC Magpies were crowned champions of the 5-a-side Winter Street Soccer League Cup after defeating FC Renegades 6 - 4 in the final match of the tournament

Lincoln could risk expulsion from Futsal first division Just twenty minutes before the start of Saturday's round of Futsal first division matches, in which Pheonix faced Lincoln, the league organisers received a not too surprising call that Lincoln could not field a full team.

This was the third consecutive time in which Lincoln had failed to field a team, forfeiting the points and now facing possible sanctions from the league.

Lincoln who on Saturday only had five registered players under their name, after losing a number of players in

January had until Monday to find new players before risking further non-appearances. The Futsal league will now have to look at the possibility of imposing sanctions in accordance to the regulations in which any team forfeiting three matches are liable to expulsion.

As one official pointed out, not only do we have people preparing the pitches in time for the matches, we have teams arriving only to be told there is no match, and officials turning up to officiate a match who need to get paid but there is no match. It is an

actual waste of time, money and resources."

Lincoln's possible expulsion would have a direct impact on the league with a decision required to be made on matches played and readjustments made in relation to points and goal differences already registered.

Lions also face a similar fate after not fielding a team this weekend, this not being the first time they have forfeited points.

Lincolns problems, however should not come as a sur-

prise as the team rode high attracting attention from many quarters in the football sector.

The transfere window saw how at least four of their players, to Coresportsgib’s knowledge, moved onto 11 aside teams, in at least one case, already having been in an eleven aside side and moving on to another side.

This in at least two cases meant that their future in futsal was questioned as coaches asked for the players to focus on one league or another.

The cross over between futsal and the 11 aside means that many other players risk the same fate in the future as teams ask for the to commit to one game or another. This mainly due to the high stakes now experienced as teams bid for financial, as well as football success.

The very nature of the corss

over between leagues also means that players represent different clubs when playing futsal as opposed to eleven aside football. Something which has raised some eyebrows among neutrals who question how players can maintain loyalty for clubs, especially in a day and age where football is geared just as much towards business as it is the sport.

Football Insider his week the gossip in the stands has been very samba driven as news of Britiannia's loss of its Brazilian trio challenged for top talking point rumours that Angels could see Brazilian investors move in with their own Brazilian players in toe. Following the resounding hammering received at the hands of Lincoln, and with some of their best players, and their manager going Angels fate was very much on a tightrope. News soon emerged from sources close to Angels that a Brazilian

investor had been in talks with the club, and that his intentions were to bring with him at least five new players, all of them Brazilian. One was believed to be linked to St Joseph, another to Britannia and the others nobody yet knew. As the news broke out Britannia made their own announcement, James Watson Britannia President stating on Facebook, "It is with regret that we announce the departure of our 3 Brazilians, Alan Arruda, Andre Dos Santos and Renan Bernardes. For 12 months they have graced us with their presence, and will leave an incredible mark on anyone

who met them." Watson praised the three players in a lengthy statement, what he was not to know was that just forty eight hours later, a coachless, Brazilian -less Britannia showed little signs of their old self. A ten goal hammering at the hands of Europa saw how the team missed their Brazilian players and coach. Yet its now what are the prospects of Angels? Will Brazilian blood inject new hope? What became very real throughout the week, as new players entered the football scene, is how Gibraltar has become a new entry point into

Europe's football market. Players from Africa, South America, and other far flung places, even Korea have sought to enter our league. Some successfully, others not with the same success. Their entry into Europe allowing them the first foothold towards their dreamed riches in Europe, for some, for others a rescue package to ensure they do not have to return home. For the clubs taking them on, a hope of success, not in the league, but in the cup, which is now where the money is as Lincoln stroll off with the title. As one manager said "its maybe time to learn from past mistakes, not

everything that is claimed by players wishing to come to Gibraltar is necessarily true. It is time we did learn to ensure we ignore the CV's and look at the football. Too many people want to come to Gibraltar and play in Gibraltar. And they just ain't good enough." However, as a former first division coach pointed out to Coresportgib, the problem with Gibraltar is that even if we tried to develop our local players we would still have problems with attitudes. You get a team like Europa and their players get paid, and they play for that wage. Many of them know if they don't get that wage they are

unemployed, so they will play for it. Here in Gibraltar most local players have other jobs, and better paid jobs than what football could give them. Whilst they might dream of football, their hearts are not in it as much as those others coming from outside Gibraltar. Their livelihoods are not at stake and it is not their priority, and unfortunately that is the reality today. Which is why we must start at looking at how we must start from the grassroots and provide those jobs for the younger ones to want to keep and dedicate themselves to the football."

Futsal lower division excitement

W

ith the first match of the first division cancelled Coresportgib had a chance to opt to cover a lower division match.

The much forgotten matches at the old Victoria Stadium sports hall had all the makings of an exciting atmosphere.

X faced Y, we soon find out that they were Rock 54 FC (Young Trends) and Laguna 55 FC sponsored by Worktop.

With just five minutes of the first half to go the score had been levelled to 2-2. Both teams excelled in determination and grit. Where the football skills lacked, in

comparison to the first division, the enthusiasm and passion to win was no lesser, if anything it seemed intense.

Hard tackles, straight talking, pushing, shoving, pressing and competitiveness were in abundance. The second half saw the young Trends take the lead to 3-2.

Soon after, absorbing the pressure they launched an attack with a quick string of passes that ended in the 4-2 being slotted in.

The young guns aggressive tackling was at one stage reprimanded by their own coach as the match continued with some

very tough tackling from the young Trends.

The match slowed down a tad to the benefit of Worktop who hit the post once but we're not able to score.

The fifth came from a well passed through ball down the centre, nudged past the side of the Keeper for the 5-2. Worktop could have reduced the difference when "Danny", at least that is how they called him, broke through but narrowly missed the target.

Eventually they put the ball in the net from a back header that caught the keeper out of position.

A chaotic clearance where the ball ends in a rebounds at the feet of a young Trend forward whose shot is then deflected into goal brought the difference back to three for the 6-3.

Rock 54 taking the three points with a 6-2 victory. We later found out that is was a second a against a fourth placed match from the third division, truthfully something we could have easily have known beforehand had we planned to cover the third division rather than the first division matches. The Lincoln nonappearance allowing us the time to take a peek at other divisions.

Glacis forfeit three important points by not turning up

The futsal league went into disarray this weekend when three teams were unable to field teams for their first division matches.

Significantly Glacis United, who have recently dropped points at the top of the table were among the teams that were involved in walkovers, gibing all three points to rivals Lynx after they did not have full team available to field.

St Joseph's also benefitted from a walkover after Lions had a similar fate. The Lions team who have faced constant problems throughout the season are among the teams which could face expulsion from the league for not fielding a team on more than three occasions. Lincoln, who are also among the top four, like Glacis also dropped points not having enough players registered following the departure of most of their squad during the transfer period.

Cannon and Manchester split the spoils

Two bottom clubs fighting it to the bitter end, with neither taking all the points, that was the way the Cannon v Manchester encountered ended on a day that Futsal saw many of its top teams not actually making an appearance.

Cannon opened the score on the 9th minute. This was followed by an equaliser from Ochello with set the tone for the rest of the match as both teams went into half time on equal terms.

The second half started with immediate action as Torremocha put Cannon ahead, only to see the match levelled immediately. Torremocha went out to put Cannon ahead again, and once again Manchester, through Asquez equalised, making it three all. Just as quickly De Los Santos stepped forward with two of his own for Manchester 62 putting them in the lead. It was not until the last minute of the match that Cannon got a goal back to bring the two to level terms. The match ending in a five all thriller.

College get stung by Scorpions

Scorpions, whose season has seen them battling in mid table were emphatic winners in their match against College 1975.

Going into half time with just a 3-0 scoreline in their favour, Scorpions stung College in the second half with another six goals before they even replied with their own. College's goal just adding to their misery as Scorpions responded with a further three to make it 12-1.

4th February 2016

It was a match Europa could ill afford to lose points on, and in which Britannia entered without their Brazilian trio.

Coach less and lacking the pace that saw Britannia terrify some of the top defences, this was a toothless team very much without guidance on the field.

A tentative start by Europa, who were out to control the game and ensure they captured early on and safeguarded the points soon saw them scoring their first through Belfortti. The onslaught had begun, luckily for Britannia Europa lacked pace and movement in the first half. Javi the only real option in relation to pace across the field seemed like a lonely figure at time trying to get the ball into danger areas.

It was Javi who provided the second. Javi stole the ball, and saw his shot blocked by the face of a Britannia defender. A shambolic attempt to clear by Britannia led to the ball slotted in for the 2-0 by Padal.

As defenders Britannia defenders squabbled among each other, Europa exposed Britannia's defence breaking through gaps left open by the high front defensive line. The coachless Britannia seemed to ignore any guidance from the touchline, as they interim coach bellowed instructions, most to be rebuked or ignored. The squabbling defenders conceded the third when they were unable to clear a missed header across goal which left the back open for the third, and his first, from Joselhino.

The second half started much the same but it was Britannia who opened the scoring with a thunderous volley from outside the area to the top corner from Roche for what can only be described as the goal of the season. The young man became an instant five minute hero having just stepped onto the field at half time in place of Graham.

The goal set Europa alive instead of Britannia.

CoreSportgib Joselinho suddenly spark to action with a break to goal forcing the keeper to a foul conceding a penalty, and just a yellow card. The penalty was easily slotted into the back of the net for the fourth by Padal. Joselihino once again broke through moments later to put number five past Barnfather.

Britannia's defence was in total disarray, and without their options to run at Europa, having lost their main runners when the Brazilians left, Britannia seemed like a team crumbling before the very eyes of the small crowd. Josephine, freely weaved between the Britannia defence and became a thorn to them, posing constant problems, but seemingly going unmarked throughout his time on the field.

Pinned back, Britannia conceded a penalty from a corner as they attempted to clear the ball with a high kick bring a Europa player down in the area. Rodriguez stepped forward to take it and slotted it past the keeper. The match was literally over by then, but just in case the inspired Joselhino continued to cause chaos upon the Britannia defence, his runs forcing numerous saves, his persistent free moving game, stealing balls deep inside Britannia's half as he sought to increase his goal tally.

And surely he did as he finished the game with five goals to his name to see Europa win by 10-1.

Britannia who had come into the match having provided up to now a respectable performance against tougher opposition were found lacking across the field. The departure of their Brazilian contingence , along with the absence of players injured and suspended leaving them with a mere semblance of their tough fast pace game which teams have come to respect them for.

anchester 62 got a good soaking on Friday evening, but not just literally from the pouring rain that saw the pitch semiwaterlogged. With a depleted squad from the start, after they saw some of their players pull out from action due to work commitments, Manchester were on the back foot from the start of the match against leaders Lincoln. The Manchester facing Lincoln resembling little of the team that had scraped a draw through their determination and tenacity the previous week.

Playing at a fast pace, and using both flanks to open up Manchester's defence, Lincoln maintained a near barrage on the Manchester defence from the start of the match. Within the first 20 minutes Lincoln were one up from a strike from the left side, when Casciaro received a cross from the right to strike it deep into the far post. A similar strike just minutes before saw Macedo make a flying save to keep the ball out.

Manchester were pinned back in their half for most of the second half, the only save made by Lincoln keeper being a back pass header from his own defence that nearly went over his head had he not punched it clear in a flying save.

The second came from a mistake from Macedo, who

4th February 2016 mistimed a high cross from the right leaving Argentinian striker Abayian to push the ball into an empty net with his outstretched leg.

Just minutes later, and just before the stroke of half time, Cabreras broke free down the right to strike the ball hard past Macedo with a low drive to the far post.

Lincoln had kept the style of football simple but with great effect. Missing once again Liam Walker, who is claimed not to have renewed his contract with Lincoln with Europa very much interested in the player, Lincolns midfield play was a simple open up space tactic and run with the ball, than keeping posession and creative midfield play.

The second half started much the same way as it ended. With Manchester with few real option to turn the game around, as even JP Duarte was missing from the bench due to work commitments.

With the rain now beginning to fall Manchester problems continued as Lincoln did not hesitate for one moment to continue the onslaught. With their typical frontline, high pressure tactics attempting to steal balls up front, and their deep cross to the flanks, with quick changes of flank through long ball across the danger areas, it was not long that Manchester's defence soon succumbed.

Chipolina, who had been lucky not to be send off for a second bookable offence at half time, stole the ball in midfield and run with it across the edge of the penalty area looking for a gap in Manchester's defence. On finding it he let loose a low drive, which saw a static Macedo watch it bounce off his post and into goal.

As Lincoln celebrated the weather came to Manchester's rescue. Unable to stop the runs down the flank, it was only with the aid of a sudden downpour which left the pitch waterlogged that Manchester found a way to stop the ball.

The downpour even made the Brazilian contingent, believed to be the new investors in Angels and their new players, scurry to cover such was its intensity through parts of the match.

As players struggled to keep the ball moving, with the water slowing it down, Manchester were able to defend against a tiring Lincoln. The most excitement during this part of the match came when a Lincoln player collided with the linesman, sending him sprawling to the ground on his back to the amusement of the small crowd.

The ninety minute whistle came with no celebrations, the players instead run for the changing rooms to get away from the pouring rain with the small crowd scurrying for their cars.

With both teams equal in points and stunned by the new bite of Glacis this was always going to be a tight jostle for dominant position. Both played for possession of the centre. Neither maintaining it for long. The first fifteen minutes saw no threats to goal.

Neither team yielded control of the midfield with the main battle in the centre, with no clear chances.

With both teams with new playmakers it was a matter of who would get the first break. A difficult task with both keepers commanding their respective areas in first half hour taking crosses in.

The break came when Lata broke through alone beating the defence and rounding off the keeper scored the first for Lions.

Within seconds Lynx called for a penalty when one of their players went down in the area. Linesman Ward signalling for a goal kick.

CoreSportgib As first half concluded lions had a chance to go ahead with the ball scrambled out from the very line.

Lions had the dominant possession of the match in the second half reaching goal on several occasions. Robba was forced to some good saves in one stopping on the very line.

The match was full of intensity as both tried for their second goal. Lynx had a call for handball ignored after the ball seemed to strike the arm of a lions defender.

Lions winner came right at the end when Lopez Luque dribbled past two defenders passing to Lata who crossed through where substitute Martin became an instant hero as he drove the ball into the back of the net for the 2-1. Lynx defender collapsed to the ground knowing that that was the last kick of the match.

Lions, who had been beaten in recent weeks by Glacis, confirmed their position Lynx, placing a three point difference between them and still within reach of Europa although a seemingly impossible task to even contemplate going better that third place.

rammarians ladies, on Friday, provided a steely tough opponent for one of Gibraltar's hopes in Europe. The young ladies, who were just a few weeks ago at the wrong end of an 8-0 score-line played with the type of determination and grit expected from a team looking to put the record straight.

Pressing the veteran Hawkes in every zone of the field, the Grammarians kept pushing Hawkes back into their own area. The veterans clearly frustrated as they reacted to umpire calls and the tough tackling, as the match came to its final 15 minutes, Grammarians winning also the chase for the ball in most areas giving Hawkes very little possession.

With neither team scoring, the saved penalty by Hawkes keeper Chelsea Glover, who was playing her first match after she was injured in the previous match with Grammarians, made her the hero of the day. The young keeper coming out second best when the rebound was struck straight onto her legs.

Hawkes, who had argued against some of the umpires decision, feeling short-changed in what they believed should have been a short corner, themselves had a chance to score in the last minute with a strike at goal going just wide.

sola Blue Stars continue on a roll, unbeaten so far, having taken all the trophies earlier this year, Under 14, Under 16, Under 18 and Mens and now still on a roll in the league.

The impressive run of results across the categories places Isola Blue Stars as the team to beat. Only this week alone the Under 14's beat Europa by 53-18, this was followed by the Under 18's winning 74-53 against Valmar Wrighttec. This Thursday the Under 16's hope to continue the unbeaten run.

Speaking to Coresportgib David Parody, highlighted how proud he is of his players, "Our Defensive attitude is amazing," he said, "So far every player in both games have scored. Its excellent team work." Isola Blue Star's success of late is not just about the sport but the ethos behind the team. This was clear to see speaking to Parody who explained that "coaches are not only there to help players in a game and teach them skills but to

educate them to ensure they work hard both in sports and school."

He explained that it was important for teams to realise that "the bottom of the Pyramid is meant to feed the top," something which Isola Blue Stars seems to have been working hard in doing.

Isola Blue Stars coaches have set themselves a hard task, but one which seems to be working for them as the team continues their success. "The first thing we tell our kids we win or lose as a team and school is as important as sport. We get the kids to produce time tables for school, homework and sport and to organise themselves. It’s a tool for life," explained Parody as he outlined the ethos that the team follow both on and off the courts. "What I like is when they see us in the future they have good memories and are thankful for what we gave that has helped them both in sport and school."
