Nathan top of the world umpires

28th January 2016

Gibraltarian Umpire Nathan Stagno has been named FIH umpire of the year.

Immediately on the announcement being made The GIbraltar Hockey Association send out its congratulations said "The GHA congratulates Nathan on yet another fantastic achievement and wish him all the best for the Olympics in RIO."

Nathan had been unaware of the award just hours before it was made public in Gibraltar. The local umpire had been attending a Fitness awareness campaign organised by Bayside School, on his departure the announcement was made public.

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, who himself had attended the fitness awareness campaign when Stagno had been present, later said: ‘Nathan has been a stellar example of our community for a very long time. In 2012 he was asked to umpire at the London Olympics and in 2014 I had the honour of awarding him the Gibraltar Medallion of Distinction for his outstanding achievements when umpiring the final of the Hockey World Cup in Holland. In December 2015 he was presented with his Golden Whistle on the occasion of officiating in his 100th international match in Raipur, India. Nathan has also been appointed to umpire at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which will be his last international match before his well-earned retirement. I am sure the whole of Gibraltar will share in my pride in Nathan being named as the FIH Men’s Umpire of the Year, a fantastic achievement and a testament to his outstanding career’.

Gibraltar could easily host Youth or Junior Athletics meet

says European Athletics President The European Athletics federation have this week hosted a seminar onboard the luxury floating hotel the Sunborn in Gibraltar.

The European Athletic Association (also known as European Athletics) is the governing body for athletics in Europe. The association consists of 51 national members and is one of six Area Associations of the world's athletics governing body, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Svein Arne Hansen its current president met with Minister Steven Linares and GAAA Chairman Frank Carreras where they held a press conference together.

Hansen welcomed the fact that the seminar had been held in Gibraltar, pointing out the importance of Gibraltar as one of the 51 national members within the association's ranks.

Whilst congratulating Gibraltar on its facilities he did nevertheless point out that in discussions with Sports Minister Linares he had been promised that a new track would be fitted in the very near future as part of the overall upgrading of facilities in order to hold the Small Island Games in Gibraltar. He further added that his biggest pleasure was the investment that existed in sports facilities,

pointing out that whilst other cities were big they did not have some of the facilities that existed in Gibraltar.

Significantly the European Athletics president pointed out that Gibraltar, who was already due to host the Island Games in 2019, should aspire to host athletics meets at a European level, suggesting that its present facilities could cater for Youth championship, third division or even junior championships. Claiming there was a potential for meetings in Gibraltar as it already had a good stadium adding "Please apply."

Asked by the local press if he would back Gibraltar's application Hansen said that he would. His response seemingly getting the nod of approval from both the Chairman of the GAAA and Minister for Sports who were at the press conference as he made his remarks.

Gibraltar Hockey Told Spanish Actions Outside European Hockeys Remit

The Gibraltar Hockey Association have tonight commented publicly to reports that the Spanish Hockey Federation has warned Spanish clubs they will be sanctioned if they play against Gibraltar sides, play with players from Gibraltar or play in Gibraltar. In a statement issued this evening they state:- “Please see below Press release on behalf of the Gibraltar Hockey Association. In December 2015 the GHA received various emails from our contacts in Andalucia which had been sent to them by the Spanish Hockey Federation (“RFEH”) the text of which is set out below.

In brief, the RFEH claimed to have been contacted by the EHF who noted that matches involving Andalucian and Gibraltarian clubs were being played in Gibraltar and Spain.

They further sent a memo from the consejo superior de deportes banning all sporting contact with Gibraltar also set out below and threatening sanctions for non compliance. The GHA immediately referred this matter to the EHF who undertook to investigate. In brief their findings are the following :

1. The EHF categorically deny notifying the RFEH of any matches being played involving Gibraltarian and Spanish clubs.

2. The EHF support the efforts and cooperation between Gibraltar Hockey and Andalucia Hockey and fully encourage the relationship to continue to grow. 3. Unfortunately, the below is a National

measure imposed by the consejo superior de deportes on it’s sporting associations and outside of the remit of the EHF.

4. The EHF hopes the matter is resolved soon and Gibraltarian and Andalucian clubs continue to enjoy their traditional sporting friendship.

In addition we are aware that several clubs in Andalucia are lobbying their local authorities to tackle this issue, which also has significant consequences for them. They are fully aware that they have been misled by the RFEH as no notification was made by the EHF. We suspect that the visit of the EHF President to Gibraltar in October may have triggered this action by the Consejo / RFEH in retaliation for the press coverage that it attracted.

We will provide further updates in due course. ”

Its not just hockey!

EHF President in Gibraltar - the image Spanish political arm in sports seems to dislike so much seeing.

The latest manifestations by the Spanish Hockey Federation against Gibraltar hockey has come as a reality check to the sporting community in Gibraltar, one which highlights that it cannot sit on its laurels for too long and get comfortable as Spain will mix politics with sports, deliber-

ately.

As the President of the Gibraltar Hockey Association has highlighted the latest stream of events whilst targeting hockey, mainly due to the simple fact it’s the Spanish Hockey Federation that has issued the warnings, the

fact is that the Spanish Hockey Federation has only repeated the Consejo Superior de Deportes global warnings to ALL sporting bodies, clubs, associations and organisation over the participation of Gibraltarians, or Gibraltar related entities or events alongside Spanish

This has led many to believe that warnings, which have not been acted upon previously although in existence, were a deliberate manifestation of political discontent and an attempt to pacify the political arm by being seem to have taken some sort of action.

Yet, it is not an insurmountable battle.

Football proved that whilst Spain might continue mixing sport with politics a concerted campaign can overcome obstacles, as was proved when Gibraltar, against Spanish wishes, and against Spain's campaign against it, were accepted into UEFA after decades waiting. As far back as 1999 successes against Spanish political campaigns against Gibraltar's sportsmen and women can be seen.

Statement from the Government of Gibraltar “HMGoG Supports Gibraltar Hockey Federation Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar notes the clarification of the European Hockey Federation in respect of the ban on sporting contact between Gibraltarian and Spanish clubs. The Government fully and entirely supports the Gibraltar Hockey Federation in such actions as it deems appropriate to undo this clear and unacceptable discrimination against our hockey community. Once again Spain mixes politics with sport in a most inappropriate manner. Spanish teams competed in Gibraltar at the time of the visit

flaws, and even in hockey they have been found vulnerable to the very fact that Spain proclaims itself as a democracy and therefore its own laws can prevent them from enacting the warnings they have issued. Flaws which have been tested by sporting bodies more than willing to ignore the politics and merely continue down the sporting route.

Not only have Gibraltarian players registered with Spanish teams in recent months, they have played in Spanish leagues, not just in hockey, but in Football, Athletics and Rugby. Sports lawyers representing some Spanish clubs have questioned the regulations and demonstrated that

they cannot be enforced upon individuals. Whilst Spain has been able to block teams from playing friendly matches against Gibraltarian teams, through threats more than legitimate action, they have not been able to stop the registration of Gibraltarian sportspeople in events in Spain or Spanish leagues when representing Spanish clubs. The very nature of the discriminatory nature of the regulations have been raised and have seen clubs taking on and supporting Gibraltarian players within their ranks.

Even their attempt to stop all contact with Gibraltar's sports has failed where even in football there has been friendly matches taking place

between regional clubs and Gibraltarian clubs, even the women's national team. The most recent announcement made at the end of the year that a selection from Gibraltar will participate in a friendly match against San Roque, in Spain. Rare though it's been Gibraltarian footballers have ventured to play in Spain. Most recently, the transfer market itself has seen an influx of Spanish players, registered in Spain, moving to clubs in Gibraltar, directly from Spanish clubs.

Similar occurrences exist in other sports such as basketball where a Gibraltarian plays in the Spanish leagues, and tennis where a Gibraltarian is actively participating

European Hockey president meets Gibraltar hockey legends tournaments in Spain.

The Consejo Superior de Deportes instructions, whilst a major threat to the aspirations of good relations between Gibraltar sports bodies and Spanish sports bodies is not something which even sports organisations in Spain support. edge that their presence in Gibraltar was not acceptable to CSD eyes, the tournament went ahead with players undeterred. It was a clear action of unity among sports bodies from both sides of the border, a unity which if expanded upon could lead to the total rejection of the Spanish political arms interference in sports relations.

At least two Andalusian clubs have also enlisted Gibraltarian players into their teams, this done at the same time the warnings were issued, and with the knowledge in at least one case that the politiFlying the Spanish flag, cal arm of Spanish sports alongside the Gibraltar flag was not in approval of this from the Victoria Stadium, fact. and both teams in full knowl-

The European Hockey's position on the matter, at international levels is already seemingly clear. Their latest comments shows that whilst they cannot act on national bodies decision within their own country, at an international level they are not participants of the decision. This was officially demonstrated when earlier this month Gibraltarian officials were grouped with Spanish officials for forthcoming tournaments, with the added likelihood that their top umpire, who happens to be from Gibraltar, might officiate finals in which Spain itself might be one of the participants.

The registration of at least three Gibraltarians in Spanish regional leagues is seen as highlighting such a fact. The players, who are already plying their sport in Spain, have been officially accepted to participate in Spanish leagues, this being a trend which has been seen on numerous occasions, even though the Consejo Superior de As one local hockey offiDeportes instructions cial indicated to date back decades. a call for unity Paul Ignacio, former Road Racing champion in Gibraltar and who in 1999 led a campaign that saw all sports bodies in Gibraltar unite and the Great Britain Athletics teams support a campaign to stop Spain from stopping a Gibraltarian from competing in the World Championships has called for sports bodies in Gibraltar to once again join forces to campaign against Spain's continued policies against Gibraltar's sports men and women.

In 1999 Ignacio launched a campaign which saw most main sporting bodies in Gibraltar join forces to lobby their international organisations to support a Gibraltarian athlete from competing in the World Championships in Seville. The campaign led to members of the Great Britain team standing in full support of the athlete, even indicating that they would remove themselves if the athlete was

not allowed to compete.

The campaign itself opened some new doors to new relations being gained not just at an international level, but also at a regional level as sports bodies from even Spain ventured to challenge Spanish political manifestations in sport and instead forged better relations with sports in Gibraltar. Doors which had already been opened in some quarters but were further re-opened as the campaign took an international perspective.

Speaking to Coresportgib this week Paul Ignacio was asked to comment on the latest warnings issued by Spain over Gibraltar's hockey.

Spain must be reminded of this at Sporting level. With the current attitude taken by the Spanish Hockey Federation, Politicians should keep away they should just protest and not take further action, the European Federation can investigate as they wish the question is will Spain respect the decision if they found to be on contravention of any rule for discrimination. All I would say is in parallel locally we must through all sporting associations and bodies link up with our counterparts and colleagues and urge them to stand up to Sports should have No Frontiers, Sports should not allow Political interference despite race, colour or nationality .

Back in 1999 when Spain decided yet again prevent a local athlete to compete in a World Championship we reached out to our counterparts in UK and in turn other European counterparts lobbied about the wrongful action, Spain was exposed again we came through our athlete participated. The Spanish Hockey Federation might suggest they will take action against those that go against their direction so what Clubs/Players give in to this intimidation, standing united and getting

sport across a wide spectrum will create the solidarity to show up the Federation and give those that want to enjoy a game with us or make us part of their team feel they are not alone on this one we stand up to THE FEDERATION as ONE. SPORTS WITHOUT FRONTIERS" Similar calls have been made from local sports bodies and individuals who have highlighted that any campaign to proactively counter Spain's policies against Gibraltar's sporting fraternity requires the support from Spanish counterparts.

The call for SPORTS WITHOUT FRONTIERS has seen other local sports bodies and personalities express their support for all sports bodies to join together and proactively campaign as one, without the influence or interference from politics.

James Parody, also a former athlete who in 1999 was also part of the campaign group when asked to comment on Paul Ignacio's call for unity expressed his support for the initiative stating " I have always said Sports and Politics shouldn't mix but in my opinion those involved in politics should support the sports men and women without ex-

pecting anything in return Spanish politics have always been against Gibraltar being recognized as an independent Sporting organization so what has happened to the Gibraltar Hockey association is nothing new but I agree all sporting associations in Gibraltar should unite and gather support including from their Spanish counterparts to support our right to participate and be recognized as a team representing Gibraltar be it as an individual, a independent team or the National team"

The call for unity, which Coresportgib also posted on its facebook page has seen numerous sporting individuals and entities already step forward voicing their support publicly.

Gibraltar United keeper Goldwyn speaking to Coresportgib said "Sports and politics shouldn't mix in my opinion whether its hockey, football, basketball or any other sport! Sports is something that should be enjoyed by everyone regardless of your nationality! Sports brings people together." Most significantly, the football fraternity stepped forward immediately to offer their support.

SPORTS WITHOUT FRONTIERS

Dennis Beiso, General Secretary of the Gibraltar Football Association added his immediate support behind the Gibraltar Hockey Association and calls for a united front from all sporting bodies to campaign against the Spanish Hockey Federations ban on Gibraltar Hockey.

Responding to Coresportgib request to comment on whether the GFA would comment on a call for unity Dennis Beiso, General Secretary of the GFA did not hesitate to demonstrate his support.

In an official statement by the Gibraltar Football Association it states " The Gibraltar FA has taken note of the statement issued yesterday by the Gibraltar Hockey Association in relation to the Spanish Hockey Federation's prohibition (apparently following instructions from the Spanish Government's Consejo Superior de Deportes) on all forms of sporting contact between Spanish and Gibraltarian hockey teams.

The Gibraltar FA places on record its total support for the Gibraltar Hockey Association in its efforts to get the European Hockey Federation to redress this unacceptable situation and

thus ensure that the European hockey family, of which the GHA has been an integral and proud part for many years, remains free from any type of political interference."

Affecting all sports Coresportsgib asked one of Gibraltar's top swimmers Jonathan Cruz who also added his voice to calls of unity, commenting to Coresportgib, that like in 1999 he would support any such campaign where sportsmen and women come together and proactively continue the campaign together to allow Gibraltar's sports men and women to participate in sport without the interference from politics.

Coresportgib, for its part supports the call for a united front.

Editor Stephen Ignacio commenting, "The call for a SPORTS WITHOUT FRONTIERS campaign, where all sporting bodies, including those which can be gathered from outside Gibraltar is one which local sporting bodies should consider carefully.

Politics has no place in sports, but it’s the sportsmen and women from Gibraltar and Spain who must unite as one and

demonstrate that sports is above politics. It does not matter what our political differences are, or what our national differences are we cannot allow there to be an "aparthied" in sport purely on the grounds of a historical claim over a territory which has gone over 300 years without a shift in postures. This is an Aparthied in sports, and the sports community around the world must realise, but only those in Spain can really effect change by challenging it. And we must be willing to support them if they do, in which ever form or way we have to, but importantly we must show open arms to our sports colleagues in Spain to show we are not fighting them, but the politics which interfere. We would like to see our sports bodies and organisations meeting to discuss ways ahead for all sports to benefit from a concerted effort, and as part of the media industry, we would call on all the media to offer their support to promote the idea of SPORTS WITHOUT FRONTIERS.” Support SPORTS WITHOUT FRONTIERS!!

Lions roar returns

Having lost 6-0 to Glacis only seven days before, and with not one single point gained since the New Year Lions were out to prove that they were still far from finished.

The first half saw Lions take possession of the ball keeping Britannia within most of the first half. The latter only making a few rare runs forward as Lions dominated play.

It was in one of this Britannia breaks forward that a clearance from the Lions defence caught Britannia's defence out. With the ball taken forward onto goal and struck home by Romero Jimenez as they approached the first 30 minutes.

The match remained unchanged by the goal

28th January 2016 with Britannia only striding forward on long passes and breaks.

The second half saw a change in tune as Britannia pressed forward, this time with Lions pinned back into their own area. Britannia, nevertheless had few chances at goal. Their fortunes also turning for the worse when Risto Kago received a direct red card. Something that even the Britannia keeper was not happy about shouting out "not again, every single game," referring to the number of times the same player had been send off during the season.

Even down to ten men, Britannia remained for most of the second half with the main possession of the ball. Their prodding at Lions defence resulting in few chances as the match became a dull frenetic, hard tackling affair in the centre of the field.

It was not until around the last ten minutes, that the tired legs of Britannia felt the absence of that extra man. Lions strode forward using the flanks as a way to break down the Britannia defence. The latter's keeper, who had not really been tested, was called upon to come out of his box on several occasions to clear the danger with his feet. In one of these clearances he was seen controlling the ball with his arm, an action the officials missed.

Lions win takes them to fourth place whilst Britannia drop down to 5th. click here to see full gallery collection in our website

Lynx latest victim of Glacis

If there was any doubts in people's minds that Glacis United's six nil victory was just a blip in the first division scope, Glacis were out to prove otherwise in their clash with Lynx.

Lynx tipped at the start of the season to be amongst the top four, came into the match knowing that Lions, with a similar record to them had been humiliated by a refreshed Glacis squad, hammered six nil last Monday. Lynx themselves have brought in new signings who proved invaluable last week to get all three points against Gibraltar United.

The Glacis v Lynx match was to see

the small crowd, some two hundred people, excited as both teams offered end to end action, with very little between the two, except for the presence of newly signed number 24 Lopez. The front man was to become the star of the match as he tore through the Lynx defence, causing all kinds of problems. The first attack came from Lynx who won a corner. Javi Chico demonstrating early on he was a threat from set pieces, putting the ball just over the crossbar as he took the corner.

Glacis responded immediately with their own attack, with Barletta seeing his shot saved by Gibraltar national

keeper Robba.

The match went from end to end with Lynx piling the pressure on Glacis defence only to see the two Glacis Ruescas, Pineda and Puertas, clear everything thrown at them, cancelling out Robert Guilings threat down the flank. Glacis newly refreshed frontline, including Lopez, Barletta and Cortes Narvaez once again combined to tear down the oppositions flanks with quick flowing counterattacking wide passes and runs into the defence over and over again.

After numerous chances at both ends the first half ended in deadlock.

The second half saw Lynx lean on Glacis defence, taking back most of the initial possession and control, something Glacis seemed content to allow as they continued to plunge forward with their own counter attacks. The second half seeing only Lopez staying up front throughout. This proved to be a headache to Lynx's defences as he consistently prodded their defence, running at every ball, with several attempts at goal as he won possession or forced open gaps which were then filled by his own colleagues supporting his forward runs.

It was in one of this counters that

28th January 2016 Glacis went ahead. Entering the 50th minute mark Lynx were caught out when Lopez intercepted a pass pushing the ball to Tirado who was running unmarked on the right. A quick pass back from Tirado to Lopez as the Lynx defenders were caught out left Lopez on a one on one against Robba inside the penalty area. Lopez curled the ball around the oncoming Robba and to the near post as the latter came out to block.

With Glacis one nil ahead Lynx pushed forward, only to see Lopez make another break within minutes, this time getting a yellow card for allegedly diving as he was tackled inside the penalty area.

With Lynx looking for a goal, and Guiling having been effectively zone marked out of the match by Glacis defence, Parody made a change bringing on Akrapovic on the 65th minute. The latter's first touch ended in a miscued shot at goal from just outside the area. Within seconds Glacis were lucky not to concede as a cross from a foul ended with goalkeeper Carlin beaten and Ruesca Pineda clearing off the line. As Lynx continued to press forward, once again Lopez proved to be a nemesis, breaking free onto goal, once again on a one on one with Robba, his strike this time coming off the post.

Glacis continued for the rest of the match absorbing the pressure at the back, leaving Lopez alone upfront to cause havoc on Lynx's defence on counter, as the rest of the team kept a tight defensive position. As the whistle blew for full time the Glacis bench jumped in jubilation celebrating as if they had won a cup final. A 1-0 win against Lynx was considered a major milestone for a team whose season had started without a single victory in the first ten matches.

Manchester steal Europa's hopes

Europa saw their season's hopes of a place in the Champions League first round qualifiers fade even further as they stumbled to Manchester 62 for a one all draw, bringing their tally to five points lost in January alone.

Europa's fortunes were turned when their defensive midfielder Ivan Moya was sent off after deemed to have struck Shaun de Los Santos with his flailing arm. Europa who had most of the possession in the first part of the game, bombarded Manchester 62's area and controlled the midfield possession from the start. The departure of Moya saw them re-organise themselves. Javi Martinez, who had been breaking through the flanks moved into the centre for a while as they reformed their lines. Later returning to his flank after the half time break.

Manchester with the one man advantage still found it difficult in getting back possession, their defensive duo of Sergeant and Hoesken clearing the danger and keeping command at the back as Europa demonstrated

their physical strength in maintaining the pressure on.

Manchester seemed to have opted to absorb the pressure from the start of the match, using long passes and breaking runs to cause problems at the other end. Even with their advantage, Manchester did not adopt a new game plan. Instead they continued to run the ball forward on breaks and long passes, keeping little possession in the centre against a Europa team that kept pressing forward and keeping possession in midfield to maintain their quick short pass play before breaking down the flanks or steam through the centre.

The second half saw more of the same, with Manchester absorbing the pressure defensively as Europa kept possession of the ball and continued to lunge forward looking for goal. Manchester still reliant on the long pass and quick break to reach Moya's penalty area.

In one of the many breaks from defence Manchester saw a goal disallowed as Hernandez rummaged forward trying to get past two defenders. Sandwiched between the two Europa defenders Hernandez found the ball after momentarily losing it and struck it past keeper Munoz only to see the linesman wave for offside to his dismay.

With Manchester enraged by the decision Europa launched their own attack which saw new signing Alex click here to see full gallery collection in our website

28th January 2016 Quillo strike the ball into the top corner of the goal and past goalkeeper Macedo for his first for Europa.

Even one up and with ten men the Europa professionals maintained their pressure on Manchester, keeping possession of the ball and making Manchester chase after the ball. It was not until the last ten minutes and with JP Duarte coming on for Manchester that they begun to pile forward.

Manchester saw four shots at goal cleared from within the six yard box in a matter of seconds, as they literally threw everything at Europa, only to see it thrown back out again to their obvious frustration.

As the minutes ticked away Manchester won a throw-in. The ball was thrown into the danger area with the clearance from the Europa defence falling to the feet of Manchester's defender Rovengo who struck the ball before it hit the ground, nailing it into the back of the net for the equaliser and obvious celebrations to follow. Europa, with seconds to go on the clock were unable to pick up and attempt a comeback, losing two further points, the gap with Lincoln now widened to 8 points and their hopes for a Champions League qualifier fading further away. Europa have now dropped five points this January, with Manchester since the changes in manager have seen their fortunes change, regaining ground following their poor start to the season.

Red, White& powerful A humiliating defeat was the least of Angels problems as they face rebuilding their team after the departure of half their squad including keeper Mateo and their manager during the week. The last team owner Edmonds would have wished to meet was Lincoln, and for good reason following a 13-0 hammering they received.

came with two replacements for Mateo, just in case, and he needed them.

Angels started the match showing some good signs. For the first 30 minutes of play they seemed to have guardian angels in front of goal. From the very first two minutes new goalkeeper Gonzalez had to make two saves as Lincoln showed their intent. Angels had parked the bus, the house and everything they could find in front of goal to keep Lincoln out. For the first 30 minutes Angels looked like the side that had once gone ahead two nil against Europa before being between by the narrowest of margins. This was, however, not the case.

It was not until the 34th minute that a run down the left flank saw a deep cross into the centre which was struck whilst in the air to goal by Casciaro (Kyle that is). The ball bouncing off the crossbar and into the back of the net for the first. The goal itself seemed to be more of a miss kick than an accurate delivery, but finding the hole in Angels blockade. Lincoln had finally unlocked the game.

Lincoln launched an assault on the weaknesses they had found during the first thirty minutes and to good effect. Just minutes after the first Angels conceded a corner that was swung to the far post where it was headed back in for Cabrera to header into the back of the net. The Angels keepers lack of height seemed to have been noted and Lincoln were about to take advantage of his weaknesses and that of the defence. The 3-0 came from a break down the right flank with a cross into the penalty area seeing Abayian header the ball over the keeper, who had struggled to reach high balls. Half time came just on time for Angels with Lincoln going for the fourth but seeing the ball hit the post and bounce away from danger.

The second half started with Lincoln changing play to the right flank, where they had caused the most problems. Cabreras started to play a pivotal role within minutes with deep crosses into the penalty area within minutes of the match resuming.

Angels soon made a change of keeper bringing on the veteran Parody.

Within minutes of having come into the game Parody found his goal under assault again. The ball once again crossed from the right for Abayian to slot in at the post for the seventh. Valiant display by Gibraltar United, but not enough

Gibraltar United's fortunes turned on the (minute) when an off the ball infraction was seen by the officials leading to the sending off of Derek Asquez with a direct red card.

The red and whites who had absorbed St Joseph's attack from the first minutes now faced a free kick just outside the penalty box with just ten men against an attacking and determined St Joseph's.

The ball was swung goalwards striking the far post far from reach from the outstretched keeper. To the his own surprise a half volley power drive is struck back to goal, straight to the same far post, far from the keepers reach as he is clambering back up to his feet, by his own defender Gallardo for

Gibraltar United's woes increased further as they went down to nine men. Having used all substitutes, and with only a keeper replacement on the bench United were forced to carry one short of men.

St Joseph's drove forward, pressing for the second, but were not to have it all their way. United absorbed the pressure well maintaining their defensive lines. With Montovio as the lone attacker running at every break of the ball St Joseph's keeper Jordan Perez was forced into two saves from drives from outside the box.

It was not until the 60th minute that St Joseph's increased their lead. A break through the centre saw the ball passed back at the edge of the box to Samaniego who drove a powershot to the far post away from the reach of El Chino.

A tiring Gibraltar United see themselves holding back as the nine versus eleven battle wore them down. St Joseph's, who had struggled to find the target as often as they would have liked were to see their attempts rewarded with two further goals in the last five minutes. The third coming as Verdejo tore down the left of and struck across goal and into the back of the net on the 83rd minute. The final goal coming again from Verdejo who once again saw Gib United goal beaten from a low power drive from the edge of the box, this time from a cross into the box from the bye line. St Joseph completing a 4-0 win, and after Sundays triumph by Glacis over Lynx just three points safe from the penultimate place in the league, held by Glacis.

Angels in talks over future

As speculation over Angels FC future persists, with football observers questioning whether the club will see the end of the season, sources close to the club have indicated that recent changes in the club have also seen potential investors seeking to take over the club.

Coresportgib understands that the club is presently in talks with a Brazilian investor who is directly linked to the football transfer market. The same person likely to bring in new blood into the squad from abroad if the discussions conclude successfully before the end of the transfer window this week.

New signing

Alberto Urdin Gonzalez and striker Salva Garcia joins Lions whilst Britannia sign Theo Pizarro and highly rated defender Thomas Hastings.

New addition to Gibraltar United

Gibraltar United siad they “are very happy to announce the appointment of former Glacis United manager, Javi Sanchez, to the technical team. Javi is no stranger to the local football scene and his appointment shows how the club is gradually growing and developing on and off the pitch. Javi has managed youth and senior sides for Glacis United and has a wealth of experience to bring to the table. When he became available it was an easy decision for the club to make and we are elated Javi took up our offer. He will work under Manolo with the First Team and also take over the management of the Reserve side.

This is not the first international tournament to be hosted in Gibraltar with GABBA last summer acting as host to the FIBA under 18 and 19s women and boys categories.

The tournaments were played one after the other at the Tercentenary Sports Hall.

Match ends in controversy

The Isola Blue Stars

versus Europa Basketball Academy men's division match ended in controversy after the latter disagreed with the officials decision. With just 22seconds left on the

clock the team were instructed off the court by their coach. Only two players stayed on to complete the match. Blue stars were the eventual winner.

Futsal was struck by the lack of appearance bug

Futsal was struck by the lack of appearance bug this weekend when the first match of the day in the first division was cancelled, the points going to Lions after Lincoln were unable to field a full side.

Lincoln, fourth in the table, has seen two of their players leaving to play 11 aside, one for St Joseph's the other for Mons Calpe, neither believed to wish to continue playing futsal for the time being.

Lions who themselves have had to perform with limited resources, including men short, continue second from bottom, with the

guaranteed points playing in their favour.

The second match in the first division did not fair much better, as Pheonix met Cannons. The latter fielding just one substitute at the start of the match, with a second one arriving well into midway through the first half.

The match itself, although not a classic with respect to overall play was to see Pheonix play out another dramatic scoreline with bottom of the league Cannon who have only won one match all season.

Taking the lead with Ledesma scoring twice, Pheonix soon lost the least momentarily as Mena notched two of his own and Chidgey added another to put Cannon 3-2 ahead. Pheonix scored two of their own with McCarthy and Cuesta to bring them back in the lead only to see Cuesta then score an own goal.

Ledesma then went on the rampage scoring four more of his own as he kept Pheonix in the lead responding to goals from Dominquez, Carillo, Mena and Baglietto for Cannon.

With McCarthy scoring the nineth and Ledesma scoring two more, Pheonix run away with a narrow win of 11-9. For the second week running Pheonix was involved in a clash which saw them playing it out until the final minutes for a win.

Lynx win top flight battle Futsal

28th January 2016

Lynx third in the table with 18 point before the start of the match took over the lead from St Joseph with goals from Heredia Vargas (11 and 36) and Duarte (19 and 27) for a 4-0 win in what was the clash for top spot. Lynx's fortunes were further helped by Gib Scorpions 2-0 win against Glacis who had gone into the game second in the table. Goals from Correro and Dechraoui Pinero in the 19th minute opened the scoring for Gib Scorpion. Glacis who last week stumbled against title rivals St Joseph were in for a humiliating defeat losing 7-1 as Scorpions closed the gap at the top of the table placing themselves four points behind third placed Glacis.

In other matches bottom of the College 1975 FC took the points in their fixture against Manchester 62 in another no show for the weekend. click here to see full gallery collection in our website

NEW RUNNING TRACK PROMISED

Minister for Sports Steven Linares has stated that Gibraltar will have a new running track soon, in line with planned upgrades for the sports facilities in Gibraltar with a view to the Small Island Games in 2019.

Speaking at a press conference held by the GAAA to introduce European Athletics President Svein Arne, the Minister was very direct in his comments, referring to criticisms made recently in social media that his ministry is geared for football. " We are not football, we are for all sports" he said as he confirmed that his Ministry were all ready looking at plans to upgrade all sports facilities and were awaiting the finalisation of budget estimates before making further announcements.

Commenting on the importance of Athletics the Minister added that plans to upgrade the running tracks were already in the planning stages and "promised" a new running track in Gibraltar before the Island Games. The present track, due to the use of the present stadium is already showing signs of wear which has been highlighted among athletes.

The promise to upgrade the track comes also at a time when a warm up track is already under consideration for runners. The warm up track, a 200m racing track, is planned to be located in the area of Cepsa once the new east side link road is completed and the area is transformed, as planned, into an extension of the sports facilities at Bayside Sports complex. The warm up track is welcomed by athletes as one of the possible solutions in removing athletes from training next to the football pitch when matches are on. "It is an accident waiting to happen," commented a local athletics official to Coresportgib as he de-

scribed how during training sessions, especially when children are involved, football matches do take place placing the athletes at risk of being hit by balls kicked out of play. "Children are small, and a ball hitting them on the head could actually cause serious injuries or even kill them, these are grown men, some playing for clubs who are competing to be at the top of their league to get promoted," as he referred to the fact most matches taking place during practise sessions are second division matches, "you cannot expect them to stop playing because we are training, but one day someone, even a child, might get hit by a ball and get injured because of it. It's not the best of situations at the moment for any of us."

Other Sports News Gibraltar Island Games looks for accommodation

The company set up to organise the Island Games in Gibraltar for 2019, in conjunction with the Government, is exploring accommodation options and inviting expressions of interest.

The services that are being sought would require to accommodate approximately 2,500 people during the period of the 4th to the 14th of July 2019.

Expressions of interest should be handed in at the company’s offices in 124 Irish Town or emailed to info@gibraltar2019.com. The closing date is the 15th February.

Commonwealth Game Association might bid for 2021 Youth Games

In comments made to GBC Newswatch on Tuesday the Commonwealth Games Association Secretary General Joe Schembri indicated that he was confident that Gibraltar is capable of putting in a bid to become the backup host nation for the Youth Games in 2021.

Mr Schembri said that Gibraltar had wanted to make the bid earlier but that his association did not believe at the time the facilities were in place to do so. Since then the Island Games bid has been successfully allocated to Gibraltar for 2019, with facilities to be upgrade. This has led the association to believe that if the only bidder for the Youth Games were to pull out Gibraltar would present itself as an alternative option.

The bid is among issues to be discussed between the local committee and the Federation’s Executive Board, who have chosen to hold their inaugural meeting in Gibraltar.

Badminton

The Badminton Association in association with the Department of Education have organsied a badminton interschool tournament this week which will see middle schools compete against each other at the Tercentenary Sports Hall. Monday saw the start of the tournament with the Girls playing their mini league. Four schools, Bishop Fitzgerald, St Annes, St Joseph's and Loreto Convent taking part. Each team would play two singles matches and a doubles against each other. The decider came in the last round when St Annes, with three seasoned badminton players played against Loreto, who had four converts from tennis, St Annes marginally coming out on top. The tournament saw girls who had only just started playing compete for the first time. The next two days will see the Boys A and B teams playing, with thursday seeing a mix.

Day two saw some superb badminton being played by the young boys from five schools, Loreto, Bishop Fitzgerald, St Anne's, St Josephs and St Bernards. Very tight matches were seen at the start of play with some good young skills on display.

Once again St Anne's had the crop of the best players. The tournament saw the boys split into two groups the A teams and B teams, such was the number of players participating, as opposed to the Girls division which only counted with the A division.

The tournament was seen as a chance to provide competitive Badminton experience to the young players, some of whom had never played a competitive match before, raising the awareness of the game. Badminton coaches were on hand to guide players during the tournament.

GARA’s 2016 “Indoor” Rowing Event: Up-Close and Personal click here to see full gallery collection in our website

28th January 2016

Words and images: (c) 2016, Dino Chincotta

After an absence of some four years, the, somewhat, curiously-named, "Indoor Rowing Event" made a welcome return to the Gibraltar Amateur Rowing Association’s (GARA) Racing Calendar with the Calpe and Mediterranean Rowing Clubs (CRC and MRC respectively) gearing up to compete for the Rotary Challenge Cup.

The chilly, bracing conditions on Saturday the 16th January 2016 did not deter a good turnout of supporters from gathering in front of the Boathouses in anticipation of, and what proved to be, an entertaining and exciting exhibition of local, landbased, rowing prowess at its best.

It is, to some extent, unusual for rowers to find themselves so near to spectators. The up-close and personal, vocal encouragement, no doubt, contributed towards some excellent individual performances and impressive results overall. The morning’s proceedings opened with the Female and Male Junior 14 categories racing over 1,000m. This saw Sophie Peralta (CRC) and Craig Gill (CRC) completing the distance in times

of 4:03.20 and 3:55.50 respectively. A creditable performance by, second-placed, Daniella Wood (CRC: 4:04:10) in the Female event being worthy of note. For the remaining categories (with the exception of the Veteran Male event), the distance increased to 2,000m. This saw Dilys Roswell (CRC), in the Female Junior 16, and Alessandro Chincotta (CRC), in the Male Junior 16, finishing in times of 7:43:60 and 6:47:10 respectively.

In the Male Junior 18 competition, Jake Moreno (CRC) finished in 6:37:00; just ahead of Kenneth Alvarez (6:40:80). Dilys Roswell (CRC), who doubled up for the Female Junior 18 race minutes after her win in the Junior 16 event, again, finished first in a time of 7:50:30. The Veteran Male 1000m race provided

MRC with its solitary win of the day with James Vinales marking his return to the sport in a time of 3:02:20.

The remaining two events provided great excitement. In the Senior Female category, a determined effort by Nadine Villalta (CRC) allowed her to finish in a time of 7:44:50; seconds ahead of MRC’s Gianna Romero (7:47:10).

The final event saw 15 year-old Jack Prior (CRC) achieve the best performance of the day over 2,000m in a remarkable time of 6:24:50: just over 1 second ahead of MRC’s Sean Randall (6:25:90).

Even at his, relatively, young age, Jack is widely recognised as one of Gibraltar's most promising rowing talents. Dilys Roswell is also, clearly, another up-and-coming talent

as her time of 7:43:60 in the Under 16 event was the best Female performance of the day. For the purposes of the Rotary Challenge Cup, one point was awarded to the winner of each individual event and made CRC the clear winner. This victory by CRC translates into four points towards the Garbarino Challenge Cup: The trophy awarded to the most successful Club at the end of the Season.

particularly in younger categories: This only augurs great prospects for the future of Gibraltar rowing.

The next GARA event is scheduled for Saturday the 6th February 2016: When the Clubs compete for the Sacarello Challenge Cup Team Endurance Regatta over a course of 5,000m.

Overall, GARA’s Indoor Rowing Event, was an undoubted success and credit should be given to the organisers for ensuring a smoothly-run and most enjoyable morning of top-class sport.

It was particularly encouraging to witness the participation of a cohort of young rowers bolstering the representation of both Clubs

Eagles come up trumps

F

irst blood went for Eagles from short corner in what was to turn out as a competitively tough encounter with the RAF ladies.

Both teams were playing as if the match was a cup final not a friendly. Eagles soon stretched their lead further with some strong attacking play.

Having drawn the previous night both matches in the 7-aside tournament the Eagles young team were not scared to run the RAF back into their own area.

Piling on the pressure the RAF soon won a short corner, and although well blocked, allowed a bit of free space they took advantage to shorten the gap.

The RAF pressed on into the second have. Well disciplined and aggressive in their play, but this did not impede Eagles from playing

intelligently and without fear of their opponents.

With the second half reaching its final 15 minutes Eagles who had stretched the field by taking advantage of space opened up by their counterattacks broke from one of their counters. A shot from outside the D deflected off an RAF player who mishit the ball as she tried to clear it. Eagles going 3-1 ahead.

The RAF responded quickly, highlighting the competitive nature of the match coming back with their own goal.

A lovely dribble inside the d by Eagles number 9 got her around the keeper to push in the fourth. The goal once again saw the RAF girls responding with their own goal. Eagles finally winning 4-3.

28th January 2016

The Senior Cup match between Grammarians 1 and Grammarians 2 was an evenly matched contest where both teams competed for dominance.

Not to be out done by the first team the second team equalled them stick to stick and on every run during the first half of the match.

A short corner opportunity in the first few minutes saw the second team block and defend against the threat, leading to an immediate chance at the other end of the field as Flower found himself alone in the opposing D to strike just wide of the far post.

Both teams closed each other down well with neither getting many shots in at goal. Grammarians best chance in the first twenty minutes was saved by the keepers arm.

The first team eventually broke the deadlock with a run into the D where the player found himself one on one with the goalkeeper whom he rounded easily before slotting the ball at the back of the net for the 1-0.

The second team pushed the first team back, with Flower taking up a role in defense and allowing the faster paced youngster to venture forward.

The match saw both teams play for a win, with little difference between the two the first team narrowly winning by 2-1. Both having some clear chances at both ends.

Following the end of the match Grammarians commented that it was a "great display of skill by some of the young players and a great performance in goal by keeper Denil Udhwani . The future looks bright."

RAF visit sees lightning fast paced 7 a-side tournament at stadium

Women's hockey was treated to a fast paced, lightning fast, highly competitive 7-a-side hockey tournament on Wednesday evening. Two RAF teams, made up from the visiting RAF squad faced teams from the Eagles, Hawkes and Grammarians in a round robin tournament. Each playing each other in a one short, one period only, game each.

The matches saw quick paced action throughout with some surprising results, Grammarians beating Hawkes two nil in one of the matches, whilst Eagles held the second tier of the RAF to a nil-nil score-line in what was a tremendously competitively edged performance from both sides.
