Angels keeper joins Manchester 62 – confirmed

Mateo, the Angels heroic keeper, whose saves have wowed onlookers even though Angels struggled at the bottom of the table has confirmed his departure.

Playing his first official match in a Manchester 62 shirt Mateo lined up for the reserves. The keeper so used to a 90minute nonstop action hardly touched the ball with Manchester 62 reserves comfortably beating Mons Calpe.

Mateo confirmed that he had been approached earlier in the week and on Tuesday signed contracts with Manchester 62.

At the same time speculation over the future of Angel’s manager continues as reports alleged that he is set to leave the club. Angels who are in relegation trouble have lost several key players in recent weeks. Reports suggesting that the manager has stepped down, although there is no confirmation indicating he has.

Jayce heads to Leicester City

Mateo wears Manchester 62 badge as he plays for reserves for first time on Wednesday

Lions FC on Wednesday announced that youngster Jayce Olivero is going on trial to Leicester City.

In an announcement in social media Lions said “Really exciting to announce that our very own Jayce Olivero is flying out today for a trial with Leicester City FC. Jayce has been with the Lions since he was about 5 years old so you can understand how proud we are that his talents are being spotted. Much as we'd hate to lose him it is an opportunity that rarely comes along more so for young Gibraltarian's. We wish him all the best for the coming week.”

Spanish hockey teams seek Gibraltar players Following reports in which the Spanish hockey federation is reported to have highlighted the Consejo Superior de Deportes’ warning that Spanish teams are not to play against Gibraltar teams, or select Gibraltarian players Core understands that local players have been sought out to play for Spanish clubs.

At least two male players are reported to be playing for hockey clubs up the costa del sol with one female player having been approached to play in Spain.

Core also understands a former national player already plays in the Liga de Andalucia. His club having been aware of the warnings and having intervened in order to register the player in question. Whilst the reports suggest that there will be sanctions for clubs playing Gibraltarian players or participating in matches with Gibraltar sides, since the warnings were re-issued in November, which is when Core understands the warn-

ings were first given, Spanish sides have ignored the warnings and have played Registered players from Gibraltar, trained in Gibraltar and participated in matches against Gibraltar sides at youth level.

The latest warnings were issued just before the Spanish general elections and are seen locally as politically oriented policies affecting all sports, not just hockey, with the Consejo Superior de Deportes having issued this policy to all sports clubs and organisations as far back as 2012.Similar policies also existed as far back as 1999 when Athletes were stopped from flying the Gibraltar flag or registering with Spanish teams, which led to condemnation from across the athletics fraternity.

The Consejo Superior de Deportes making mention in their website the policies when commenting on Spain’s campaign to stop the Gibraltar Rugby Association from becoming a full mem-

ber of the European Rugby Association (FIRA-AER) back in 2013.

Spain’s political stance against Gibraltar sportsmen and women had been met by resistance by various sporting bodies with Gibraltar teams and officials still enjoying their participation in some events including friendly matches between regional teams, and lately the increased business in the transfer market which has seen players from Spain joining local teams in football and clubs training and playing friendlies in Spain in preparation for their season.

21st January 2016 Angels defended deep with Europa unfortunate not to go further up sooner after a ball was saved by Mario and then hitting a post.

Angels held their own in defence, although saved by the crossbar on at least one occasion as mateo watched the ball pass over him thinking it was going out. Alex quillos debut saw him in the centre of midfield. He was bold enough to try a shot from afar trying to beat the keeper to be saved easily by mateo.

Angels goal was under siege for most part of the second half.

Europa had a chance to get its new signings mould into the squad and sample Gibraltar's football. Once again Angels goalkeeper with a recurring injury and having hurt his back became their saviour with some great saves.

Quillo had his chance to get on the scoresheet shooting just over the crossbar on a half volley from inside the box. His through passes into the centre proving problematic to angels.

Angels defence held on conceding only the three.

Mateo to leave Angels

Angels goalkeeper, and their main saviour during recent games is set to depart Angels for Manchester 62. Coresportgib understands that the player has been approached this week and had trials with the team.

Lincoln remain unbeaten Lincoln 4 -0 St Joseph (Chipolina 3, K Casciaro 37, 56 (pen) & 86)

S

t Joseph's came into the match joint third on 23 points with Britannia, Lynx and Lions and having secured a win over Lincoln's closest rival Europa last week. Lincoln, still unbeaten in the League and six points clear, were without Lee Casciaro and Liam Walker, two key players, both out due to injury.

Lincoln were to set the tone of the match within the first three minutes but not before St Joseph's hit at goal forcing the first save of the match. Lincoln immediately attacked, and once again it was Chipolina who struck home early. In the same way he had scored against Lynx last week in the fourth minute, Chipolina went one better, scoring on the third, this time against national squad keeper Jordan Perez. click here to see full gallery collection in our website

21st January 2016

The match was played at a high tempo, both sides giving little away. Lincoln trying to keep control of the pace of the match by playing their passing game for possession. St Joseph's for their part pinning Lincoln back and pressing in the centre.

Few and clear chances were seen at both ends, the clearest chance coming to Lincoln from a free kick with the ball falling into Jordan Perez's arms from a header.

Moments later Lincoln had the chance to repeat the move. This time, however, Lincoln took the free kick quickly catching St Joseph's out of position. Against the protests of the St Joseph's players, Lincoln the ball was swung into the middle, a shot on goal parried by Jordan only for the rebound to be put away by an oncoming Casciaro for the 2-0. As the players went for half time, Lincolns focus on the match was clearly highlighted by their keeper Paul Navas who when asked to comment on the result commented that he "did not trust the result, one mistake and the game can change in a matter of second."

With the second half started, Lincoln made several changes, bringing on (number 9) who was

St Joseph maintained their pressure trying to press forward but with few chances to test the Lincoln keeper. On the 56th minute St Josephs conceded a penalty. Casciaro stepped forward to take it slotting it into the top left corner away from the reach of Jordan Perez's outstretch arms, scoring his second. With St Joseph's pushing forward they were to be caught out again on the break with Lincoln's running down the right and swinging a pass into the centre which was met by Casciaro who headed it past Perez for the fourth and his third of the match.

The result keeps Lincoln firmly at the top still six points in the lead. St Joseph's dropping down a few places.

Manchester, with JP Duarte on the bench resting and injury came out boasted by recent wins which have seen their season turned around, although still floating at the bottom half of the table. Both sides came out trying to impose their own style of game play in what was to become a tactical game where the change of game was to be seen on around the 70th minute when substitute Gomez was send off with a red after the linesman had seen an off the ball incident.

the flanks. Britannia, the more aggressive of the two sides pressed hard to get the ball pinning Manchester back into their own half, although not having control of the ball themselves through large parts of the first half.

Manchesters' woes seemed to reemerge on the 10th minute when defender Payas called on his coach to replace him having injured himself. JP Duarte, who had himself indicated before the match that he did not expect to play more than ten minutes was brought in taking up the right flank. An astute re-organisation of the defence and frontline saw a change in gameplay as Britannia were forced to keep Alt playing further back to cover for JP's presence. The first half saw few chances at either end. Britannia threatening Manchesters goal mostly from stopped ball play, whilst Manchester showed signs of threatening Britannia's goal from a few forages forward on the break.

JP, whose presence was causing problems for Britannia had the clearest chance when on stealing the ball his shot was pushed out by the Britannia keeper.

The second half saw more of the same. The match changed when Gomez who had come on for Grimmer was send off for an off the ball incident.

Manchester took advantage of the

Lopez, later substituted for Santos, had the clearest chance to open the scoring with his header pushed over the bar by Barnfather Marfe. Toncheff then had a further chance with the ball striking the crossbar and the rebound taken by Marfe.

Minutes later Duran opened the score as Manchester took advantage of a badly taken Britannia free kick which when cleared left Duran on a one to one against a defender and striking the ball past the oncoming Britannia keeper.

Britannia's keeper was kept busy in the final minutes having to save from a JP Duarte half volley from inside the penalty area, and seeing several shots go wide.

With Britannia on the backfoot, with just ten men, another break from defence for Manchester led to the second and final goal. Toncheff, who had already tested the keeper broke through and pushed the ball past the side of the keeper into an empty goal.

Manchester ending up taking three precious points and closing the gap with the four teams vying for third place.

Algeciras legend proves shrewd purchase for Lynx

A

lbert Parody, Manager and Director of Lynx, when asked about his new signings played down the introduction of his two new players, one of which was described by Lynx supporters as a legend in Algeciras. Parody, however, indicated that he had not taken lightly who he was signing "not this time, I have learnt my lessons he said," as he commented on how he had asked players to attend a tryout for him to see how they

performed before making any decisions. This had led to even players whose resume described them as having played for Ajax, being turned down.

This mere fact alone raised expectations on how good was Santos Francisco Gomez, (Javi Chico), considering he was being lined up as first team players.

Javi Chico was soon to show his class. Just

his second match for Lynx, and still supposedly settling into the team the number ten was true to his number as a playmaker.

As Lynx piled on the pressure against Gibraltar United from the very first few minutes giving a clear indication on how the match would transpire, Javi Chico took little time to take control of the midfield. Not only running around into free space and creating space with his passing, he was also clearing the general controlling the men as he started positioning his colleagues into space,

Lynx players were more than willing to play the ball to him, as they controlled possession pinning Gibraltar United back. As lynx tried to find a way through, pushing the ball quickly through midfield and trying to find space to run through the flanks, Gibraltar United kept their form, controlled by the bellowing Goldwyn, whose constant command of his defense saw them positioning themselves to block Lynx's way through into the penalty area.

Lynx, nevertheless, reached goal on several occasions forcing Jared Buhagiar to clear of the line from a corner on at least one occasion. The flying Chino, Gibraltar United keeper Goldwyn, was once again to prove a why many consider him to be the best goalkeeper in the first division this season. Goldwyn was to prove Sastrie's worst nightmare as he first cleared a header, and then saved in mid-air a point blank shot which would have rocketed into the back of the net had Chino not been in the way. All this in a matter of minutes.

Chino's flying saves and heroics were, however, not enough to keep Javi Chico from

scoring his first goals in the first division. As Badr broke through the right flank, he crossed dangerously into the middle, his cross met by a flying punch from Goldwyn which in other days would have put the ball out to safety. With Lynx deep in Gibraltar’s half, the ball was immediately struck back into the penalty area where Javi Chico took advantage of a rebound to curve the ball into the back of the net at the far post. The ball at first seeming to be going out, but just slotting into the corner,

Gibraltar United continued to defend deep, keeping Lynx out by leaving few spaces to play through. Carl Thomas, EL Andaloussi and Gallardo proving to be stalwarts in defense.

kick.

Lynx, continued to look for a second, and with just seconds to go for the first half to finish Gibraltar United conceded a foul outside the penalty box. The ball was passed short to the right of the wall and Javi Chico curled a shot to the near post sinking the ball into the back of the net. Goldwyn was unable to reach the shot diving late for it as the unexpected shot passed over a Lynx player who dived out of the way blocking the keepers line of sight The second half started much the same way as the first with Lynx piling the pressure on Gibraltar United's defense who maintained their form throughout making it difficult to penetrate. United for their part attempted to push forward when they could, but with Montovio their only front man, they found it difficult to out run the Lynx defense.

As the pressure continued Sastrie run into the box forcing Goldwyn into a penalty. Sastrie stepped forward to take it. A curled corner went over the Gibraltar United defense and into the back of the net at the far post. The same post just minutes earlier the bellowing Goldwyn had been heard shouting for his defense to cover.

With three goals up now, Lynx slowed down a gear. This allowed Gibraltar United to venture forward. For the last fifteen minutes it was the Lynx defense that had to clear the danger as Montovio proved to be a handful as Gibraltar United went forward. As the match came to its dying seconds a free kick outside the box led to the ball being swung into the box. Montovio jumped for it and flicked the ball in the air to the left of Robba and into the back of the net. Robba who had little to do throughout the match angry at his defense for allowing Montovio space to score.

Gibraltar United sought for the next few minutes to score a second as Lynx continued to leave them to push forward.

Lions mauled to submission by rejuvenated Glacis

ions were left licking their paws on Monday night as Glacis, with their three new signs "shocked and awed" them into submission with a six goal hammering.

From the first minute of play Glacis intent was clear lunging forward through the flanks with their newly signed attacker Lopez out running Lions defence, with Cortes Narvaez, Barrieta and Nunez all joining forces to tear Lions defence apart. On the very first minute a run through the flank led to a header from closer range which required an outstretched Szpilczynski to punch away across goal away from danger.

The first 20 minutes saw Lions on the backfoot,

21st January 2016 unable to keep possession for more than a few seconds as Glacis won most of every bounce, rebound and run for the ball. In the few occasions Lions managed to get the ball in those minutes they opted for long passes forward which were being dealt with by the Glacis defence with relative ease.

It was not up until the 20th minute that Lions settled down into the game and calmed the pace down by keeping possession playing short deliberate passes across defence and midfield. Glacis were bombarded with deep crosses into the centre, and runs through the centre, yet maintained their form kicking the ball out to their front runners.

On the 35th Minute the Glacis defence was tested when a ball sunk deep into the six yard box run menacingly towards an oncoming forward, with an outstretched leg from the Glacis defence the only thing between goal and him.

Glacis were not to be prevented from attempting further breaks forward, with runs through the flank causing the Lions defence problems. In one of this runs on the 40th minute, new signing Lopez forced a foul at the edge of the box. The freekick was swung into the centre over the heads of the Lions defence and was met by Nunez who chested to control and volleyed on the turn from just outside the six yard box past the Lions keeper for the 1-0.

With the first half ending 1-0 both teams came out to resume, pundits expecting Lions possession to be maintained.

The words of Lions defender Rodriguez "to believe that it was still nil nil" seems to have been heeded more by the Glacis forward than his defence as Glacis once again repeated their performance of the first half.

A run across the flank with a deep ball into the centre led to a freekick conceded just outside the box by Lions. The subsequent freekick was curled into the centre of goal

21st January 2016 where Szpilczynski had to punch it over the crossbar for a corner.

Lions went on the attack forcing a save from the Glacis keeper on his line before Glacis stormed back towards Lions goal again using the pace of their forwards to beat Lions defence. A freekick conceded just outside the penalty area saw Glacis pass short and with a curling shot around the defensive wall Funes slotted it into the top far corner for the 2-0 in his debut for the club since signing from Britannia last week.

Lions tried to go forward but found themselves running after balls being kicked out to the front line. The constant counters by Glacis rattled the Lions defence who struggled to keep up with the pace, especially of Lopez, Cortes Narvaez, Barrieta and Nunez who maintained the pressure on the defence.

On the 30th Minute Glacis broke free in one such run and saw Cortes Narvaez receive the ball in the air in just inside the penalty area and volleys a lob over Szpilczynski who was coming out of his goal to block.

Minutes later Lopez breaks free from the Lions defence on the right and slots it past Szpilczynski as he came out to challenge him for the fourth.

The Lions defence were in disarray, with a buoyant Glacis hungry for more. Already four nil up and with Lopez and co winning most runs on the flanks the ball once again found Cortes Narvaez just inside the penalty area. WIth Szpilczynski once again off his lines, and the only thing between him and goal, Lopez lobbed it over the keeper for the fifth.

Just one minute later, in what could only be described as a repeat play, this time Lopes found himself at the edge of the box with only Szpilczynski between him and goal, and once again the ball was lobbed over the

Glacis, whose season had started with dismal performances found themselves the unlikely winners highlighting the progress under the new coaching staff now managing the team. The inclusion of three new signings bringing fresh legs and ideas into the squad.

Lions who had come into the game on 23 points, having been jointly third with Britannia, St Joseph and Lynx prior to the start of the weekend dropped precious points. Conceding their third consecutive defeat since the start of 2016 having lost 1-0 against both Gibraltar United and Manchester 62. The defeat against Glacis means that Lions would have no lost against three of the four bottom clubs.

Unusually the match ended with just a few yellow cards. Official Barcelo who last week gave out 12 yellow cards in one match, only gave during the whole match.

Blue Stars Under 16 new champions

The final of the Under 16s between Blue Stars and Europa was a tense affair which made for what senior basketball officials described as probably the "best final so far" The tensions and excitement was maintained throughout the first half as both teams shared the lead between them.

Europa opened their lead from 4-0 down through a perfectly executed triple, then going on to score again to get the one point

lead at 4-5 early in the match. The tone of the match was soon to be seen as Rocca responded with his own triple for Isola Blue Stars.

With Isola Blue Stars netting four further points without respond to regain control of the scoreboard the first quarter finished at 16-13.

The second quarter saw a mix of fortunes as

Blue stars led 24-13 before Europa reopened their scoring. The match momentarily settled with a seven point lead for Blue Stars as both teams fought hard for possession. Just before half time Europa shortened the score by stealing some crucial passes and placing Isola Blue Stars on the backfoot and placing themselves ahead with 28-30.

For the next few minutes Isola Blue stars rhythmn seemed to hit a bump as they were getting frustrated at not netting for a period of time. On regrouping, and with both teams scoring low due to the tight defences in place Isola Blue Stars took advantage and took up the lead again once again ending the quarter ahead with a score of 35-32.

Isola Blue stars maintained their lead into the half opening it to 43-36.

A couple of two pointers accepted at the same time as fouls had been given aiding their progress.

Europa started to press at the top blocking some passes forward and shortening the progress of Isola Blue Star players. The match went from end to end with both teams hungry for a win.

A sudden glitche with the scoreboard as all the data was wiped-out momentarily led to a short break whilst it was restarted. The restart saw Isola Blue Stars scoreboard caught out from a slow start and losing ground when their players did not jump for rebounds and lost focus. Europa took advantage and took the score

They however, were unable to keep the lead with the third quarter ending with Blue Stars with a slender lead of 52-49, and both with all to play for in the final quarter. The last quarter as expected was a battle for the title both teams running to win.

The tone of the match was not to change much as Isola Blue stars widened their lead to six points only to see it cut back by a triple pointer.

Europa continued to press high, but were reliant more on individual skills of two of their players than the whole team. Isola Blue Stars, with their coaches giving them instructions from the bench throughout changed tactics and used their minor height advantage to increase the lead to 62-55 with just four minutes to go. As Europa attacked, a tighter swarming defence by the Blue Stars halted their progress allowing them to get two points to Blue stars eight putting the score at 70-57, with just two minutes left.

Isola Blue Stars kept the lead until the end taking a highly fought out final with 75-65. Europa having fought all the way and meriting high praise from Basketball officials at the end of the match.

Futsal tournament not for faint hearted Players participating in this Sunday's Futsal tournament were treated to a new experience. A ten minute match with no stoppages or breaks. From the moment they kicked off both teams had ten minutes exactly to score and beat the other. Arguments with officials, discussions, fouls even loss of the ball were just delays to your own team. This set the parameters for a fast paced tournament in which teams didn't have the luxury to change tactics or slow the game down to regroup. The two European participants play it out for a win

The clash between Eagles Ladies and Hawks was destined to be an interesting clash with both participating in next May's European Challenge III Eurohockey tournament in Gibraltar. Eagles having been invited to take part after Hawks was offered the opportunity to

host the event in Gibraltar. The match started with a one minute silence for former player Sussane, Eagles unfurling a banner as they paid tribute to the former player who passed away at a young age recently.

In the first minutes of the match Hawks began to dominate play, pinning Eagles into their own half. Eagles who took a while to settle into the game kept their form as Hawks lunged forward winning the centre of the field battle. A focused Eagles defence remained

solid not allowing Hawks any clear chances at goal, although not having many chances themselves to push forward. The few attacks in the first half were dealt with rapidly by Hawks defence. The first goal came in the 30th minute when Hawks took advantage of a short corner slotting the ball into the back of the net from a half cleared rebound.

With Eagles one nil behind, the second half was to see a change of pace. Eagles begun to move forward, pushing Hawks lines back into their own area. The match opened up as Eagles moved their lines forward looking for the equaliser. With Eagles attacking further the space opened up between their front lines and defence provided Hawks with the opportunity to break away on the counter attack.

Hawks attempt several break-aways, only to be thwarted by solid defending from Eagles central defence who maintained their focus throughout, even though they were to see little of the ball during a large part of the second half.

With both defences maintaining their positions well, there were few clear opportunities at either end to test the keepers. Eagles had

Eagles pressure was to pay off when their number 7 picked up the ball at the edge of the D and turned to strike it across goal and into the far post in what was to be the equaliser.

The goal saw Eagles pick up confidence, taking advantage of Hawks momentary collapse in focus as they reorganised. Eagles piled on the pressure sniffing a chance to score another. Within minutes a well executed short corner was slotted past the keeper making it 2-1 for Eagles.

Seconds later another short corner saw stand-in keeper for Hawks, following last week's injury to their first choice keeper, making a save which kept Hawks still with a chance to come back. With just minutes to go Hawks pressed forward looking for the equaliser. A quick counter attack saw the ball skid across the front of an empty Eagles goal with Hawks frontline unable to get to it.

Eagles regrouped at the back, tightening their defensive play and taking on the same format they had started the game with. Hawks piled on the pressure, lunging forward to try and get the equaliser to no avail.

Solid defensive play by Eagles in the last few minutes of play kept Hawks out of reach of goal once again giving them the victory on the final whistle. An exciting match in which pundits had it difficult to predict the final score ended Eagles 2-1 Hawks.

21st January 2016

This May's hosts for the Eurohockey Challenge III tournament in Gibraltar Hawkes came back from one nil down at half time to turn the score round to beat a visiting RAF selection by 3-2.

The Hawkes ladies, who are used the match as part of their training towards the European matches, had been pressing on the RAF during the first two quarters with little success. As the third quarter started Hawkes opened their scoresheet, followed within minutes by a second and third goal in open play, the last a reverse stick shot from the edge of the D.

Hawkes went into the fourth quarter slowing down a bit and were met by an RAF side pushing to score the equaliser and pressing the Gib ladies back into their own half.

Hawkes were able to contain the pressure to come out eventual winners by 3-2.

The visiting RAF team will next play in a seven aside tournament today Wednesday and will face Eagles ladies on Thursday.

Juniors

Last Thursday saw the first round of league matches for junior hockey players.

On the 7 a side pitch Grammarians boys beat the Falcons girls 6-4 and the Rugby Eagles boys got the better of the Hawks girls 4-0.

Normally there would be three matches on the 9 a side pitch. However, military action in the form of helicopters, meant that the floodlights were unable to be erected. Therefore at the time of writing Netball Falcons girls have yet to play Grammarians girls. Other results were: Grammarians boys 2, Eagles girls 1; Eagles boys 6, Hawks girls 1.

Not a bad effort for the Hawks girls, who have just moved up from 7 s side to enter the 9 a side league.
