Dear Zaman Community,

We are excited to present the next issue of Zaman Magazine. At Zaman, we put strong emphasis on the teacher, student and parent relationship. Zaman International Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vision is to bring up the individuals who are to thrive and contribute to this world having a solid sense of who they are, and respect for who others are as individuals, as members of a group, as citizens of their nation, and as members of the global community. To support and enhance these relationships and the vision, the school focuses on the project-based learning and we deem that international Olympiads across the disciplines lend many opportunities for our students. , ZRXOG OLNH WR JLYH \RX D TXLFN RYHUYLHZ RI VRPH H[FLWLQJ GHYHORSPHQWV RI WKH Âż UVW TXDUWHU More happened in the past months and our students must have enjoyed the Game 24 by the Math department as well as Chemistry Cartoon Contest. In the academics arena, particularly pertaining to the English and Math departments, we had an array of projects showcase by our students. We are delighted to see how our students are able to interpret the different concepts across the disciplines in their artwork and posters and give knowledge an interesting face-lift. ,Q DGGLWLRQ GXULQJ WKH Âż UVW TXDUWHU QHDUO\ HDFK ZHHN RXU YLFH SULQFLSDOV DQG , YLVLWHG WKH FODVVURRP I am pleased to report that we are always impressed with the quality of instructions and the high levels at which our students are learning. We are fortunate to have a professional staff that are dedicated to helping students, and supportive parents who value learning and actively partners with us. We recently administered midterm tests and general assessment and the results should be out by the time you receive this magazine. We are now in the process of developing the next set of general assessment for this quarter. The new schedule wherein lessons start at 7:35 a.m. has taken effect since the beginning of the second quarter. By Zeynep Figanioglu (English Teacher) Many colleges and schools around the world arrange innumerable tours simply to bring out broad-minded, sociable, ardent overall audacious individuals into our life. ZIS is one of those schools indeed where our students show how passionate they are in order to accomplish their goals. Therefore, here in ZIS we are aiming to support our ambitious as well as smart learners to achieve their aims not only indoors but also outside the school. Thus, this summer ZIS gave to our students that chance to set an amazing journey to Turkey by providing various opportunities. First, the most exciting opportunity for our students was to experience new things. Because Turkey has its own unique food choices. This gave our students a chance to try some new cooking. For this purpose, both they were invited by volunteer Turkish families and went different restaurants by the seaside. Secondly, there was an educational side. Our students gained and to expanded their knowledge while visiting new locations in Turkey. It widened their perspective of the world so they did not think all corners of the land were the same anymore. They discovered similarities and differences between our cultures. And furthermore, the new experiences helped to broaden their outlook. Our students had the chance to accommodate both at the hotel which offered sea view in Izmir and at the dormitory which had great comfort in Istanbul. Perhaps, we can get to know about the people of other countries by reading travel books. But ZKHQ ZH SHUVRQDOO\ YLVLW WKHVH FRXQWULHV ZH FDQ JHW Âż UVW KDQG NQRZOHGJH RI VXFK FRXQWULHV and their people. Knowledge obtained by visits has a personal touch. It lasts longer than the knowledge attained by books. By Heng Irseng 9C /DVW VXPPHU ZH ZHQW WR 7XUNH\ IRU D VFKRRO WULS :H KDG DQ KRXUV Ă&#x20AC; LJKW WKHQ WKH DLUSODQH landed in Istanbul. After that, we spent 9 more hours in the car to Bolu. In these 12 days, we went to 6 beautiful cities. We went to Istanbul, Bolu, Ankara, Eskisehir, Denizli, Bursa and the last 5 days we were spent in Istanbul. In Bolu, we went to a mountain with a really beautiful view. In Ankara, we went to the zoo and in Samanyolu, we went to a really nice school. Then we took the train to Eskisehir, a fast train around 300 km per hour. In Denizli, we went to Pamukale, the white stone. Back to Istanbul, we used a boat. Istanbul is a really nice and big city. There are around 20 million people living there. In Istanbul we went to Via land, a museum, a go kart track and some beautiful super-markets. On the last day, we all wanted to go back home, but when I was back home in Cambodia, I missed Turkey so much. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know why I felt that. ,Q WKH HQG , ZDQW WR VD\ WKDW 7XUNH\ LV D EHDXWLIXO FRXQWU\ 7KLV ZDV P\ Âż UVW H[SHULHQFH WUDYHO ing to another country by myself, with my classmates and my homeroom teacher Mr. Mohammed. I think everybody should have the experience of visiting another country like I did.

Rithirot Sokhom, Sokheang Dieng 9B After a long week of exams, our 8B class had a wonderful trip to Turkey. It was an extraordinary journey for my friends and I. Although sometimes fun can turn into unhappy memories, when we arrived there, everyone was happy. The 10 days trip seemed like one day to us. We visited many interesting places, the most beautiful of them being Pamukkale. It looked cold in the pictures that we had seen, but actually it was very hot there. The food was amazing! The spice that they use was beyond thought. The best was the ice-cream, which had a chewy and soft-gummy texture, it was great. In the end, we would like to say that it was a very cool trip, and we will look forward to another trip next time. Rothvichet Poch 9B Our trip started on 24th of June. Well, all I can say about Turkey is that it was fun. We spent a lot of time on a bus. The provinces that we visited were Istanbul, Bolu, Bursa, Eskisehir, Ankara Afyon and then we went back to Istanbul. We went to a cinema, a paranormal cinema, a BBQ, a museum park, the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and other places. The food mostly tasted good, but sometimes it tasted bad to me. Turkey is a really beautiful country. We also crossed the Trust Bridge which is from Europe to Asia to Europe. In the end, I want to say thanks to Mr. Mustafa Ozgur, Mr. Murat, Mr. Oguz Coygun and Mr. Maksat for spending their time with us. David Ty 9B My name is David Ty. Last summer our class took a trip to Turkey. We visited many cities there, such as Bolu, Afyan, and Istanbul. The city that I liked most was Istanbul. Our trip was 10 days long. We ate a lot of food, my favorites were a desert made from ice, a snack called turkish delight and kebab. We had a very good trip and returned to Cambodia. We were very excited to take this trip together. In Turkey, everywhere that I went was beautiful. I went to many places, but the most fun place for me was Bolu. At Bolu I went to the lake and that was totally fun. The restaurant food was very good. People in Turkey are attractive and kind. We also visited Pamukkale, I spent a little time there and I had so much fun. In Turkey there are a lot of ancient places and they are very beautiful. We visited a lot of places there and my friends and I had a lot of fun together. When we came back I missed Turkey so much. This was a long journey. Turkey was totally best trip that I have had. Sopanha Mak 9B I had lots of fun during our trip and wish I could be back to Turkey with all my friends again. The trip was so cool, but the one thing I remember the most is the toilets there. I had the time to relax and enjoy our trip. It was a good experience to stay in Turkey for 10 days. We visited many great places and tasted many delicious foods. We played soccer with the Turkish students every night, but we had no victories. During the trip I realized I miss my girlfriend, but I still really enjoyed it. The trip cost $1850, but we spent that money to visit a very good and fresh country that has many beautiful views. We all love Turkey. There were many ways that we can spend our time while visiting. It was a wonderful trip. On 24th June 2013 of 3:30 pm we all arrived at the Phnom Penh International Airport and we departed from Phnom Penh to Singapore that evening. We spent a little time in Singapore. We waited for 5 hours in Singapore till we departed for Turkey. We arrived in Istanbul at 8:30 a.m. RQ WKH WK RI -XQH ,W ZDV VR EDG RQ WKH Âż UVW GD\ EHFDXVH ZH ZHUH VR WLUHG IURP EHLQJ on the plane for 10 hours. Then we had to travel by bus from Istanbul to Bolu for the next 5 hours. On the way to Bolu we had dinner at a restaurant. It was so cold on the mountain, but we enjoyed the day. We took a rest at the dormitory. We spent the next day in Bolu. We traveled to many city such as Balu, Afyan, Eskisehir, Bursa, Ankara and Istanbul. :H KDG D ORW RI GLIÂż FXOW\ EXW DOO ZH QHHGHG WR GR ZDV IRUJLYH IRUJHW DQG UHVWDUW OLIH :H couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t eat many kinds of food. We traveled by bus, train and on foot. We sang on the bus and enjoyed much happy times together. We were all so happy to have our homeroom teacher Mr. Mustafa Ozgur, Mr. Oguz Caygun and Mr. Murat spend this time with us. We are so thankful to all of the teachers. Sometime we got angry with each other, but we forgave and forgot.

By Puthi Seng 9C I think Turkey is an amazing country because Turkey has many thing that Cambodia doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have, like food, shops, hotels and supermarkets. I really like the supermarkets in Turkey. Turkey also has a big boat and a big airport. Everybody in Turkey is friendly and I really like them. Unfortunately, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like turkish food, but I really enjoyed this trip. Then we rode the bus to BOLU, where we stayed at a dormitory for two nights. Then, we stayed at ANKARA one night. We also did some shopping there too. We also stayed in ESKISEHIR for one night and BURSA for one night. At last, we stayed in ,67$1%8/ IRU Âż YH QLJKWV 2YHU WKRVH ORQJ GD\V ZH VSHQW RXU WLPH VKRSSLQJ IRU FORWKHV food, drinks, toys and gifts for our parents. The dormitory was a nice place to stay. Our class stayed in one room. At night time we had some tea and biscuits. We also went to a very fun place called Vialand. We rode a roller-coaster, watched some movies, road on a boat. We also went to the zoo. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re lots of animals. We also visited the school. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very nice and big school. In ISTANBUL we also went swimming, had a BBQ party and visited the museum. One of the best memories is that we always bought noodles to eat before going to sleep. We went to the zoo to look at all of the animals and went to Vialand and had fun there as well. The part I like most was the time we spent on Bolu mountain togetherâ&#x20AC;Ś.. It was the best time Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever had. The food in Turkey is different from Cambodian food. Cambodian people eat rice and Turkish people eat their meals with bread, but it was no matter to us and we just tried to eat different foods that we never tried before. One more thing that I can remember is we went to the biggest Stadium in Turkey, called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fenerbahce Stadium.â&#x20AC;? That stadium was very nice and a wonderful place. It was such a nice time for me to go to Turkey. Lastly, if I had the chance, I would go to Turkey with my friends and my homeroom teacher again. I think that all of you would like and enjoy it too!!!

AMAN AT GENIUS In June of 2013, we joined this competition as the representatives of Cambodia with 6 students DQG PH DV WKH VXSHUYLVRU $IWHU RXU FRPIRUWDEOH Ă&#x20AC;LJKW WR 1HZ <RUN ZH FKHFNHG LQ RXU FDPpus where the competition was held. The climate, the country and the people were all different from the ones back in Cambodia. The students adapted to the new environment that they would stay temporarily. Of course, we were all excited and anxious for the competition. That day came and our smart and industrious students presented their well-prepared and creative projects. The day before the award ceremony we took a trip to Niagara Falls, where most of the people would like to pose for a picture. The award ceremony was an unforgettable event for all of us, as we got gold , silver and bronze medals. We were announced to come on the stage DQG ZDYHG &DPERGLDÂśV Ă&#x20AC;DJ DQG WRRN JUHDW SULGH LQ WKDW After our extraordinary achievements, we joined the city tours of Washington D.C. and New <RUN FLWLHV DQG IHOW TXLWH SOHDVHG DQG VDWLVÂżHG ZLWK ZKDW ZH KDG JRQH WKURXJK GXULQJ RXU WRXUV It was remarkable to walk in the streets and do both window-shopping and shopping. In my opinion, it is very fruitful for the students to participate in these kinds of project competitions as they get the opportunity to see the projects from different parts of the world and experience lots of memorable moments during high school years. I believe it was a perfect time both academically and socially. I would like to present my gratitude to my successful students for their decent manners and success, and my dear colleagues who have prepared the students for the competition and last but not the least, the school administration who have trusted and gave me the opportunity to take the students to this competition. I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have imagined that I had the opportunity to join this kind of international competition and it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t easy for me. I met many people from different countries all over the world. And we shared our knowledge, culture and tradition. It was an inspirational experience and I learned a lot from that. Also, I recommend to all Zaman students to join any Olympiad, it might be one of the most amazing experiences in your life. At last, I would like to share my happiness and show my gratitude to my respective family, teachers and friends who are my constant source of inspiration. By Sovannarong Pech (Zaman Alumnus) We went as a large group, 6 people, to join GENIUS in Oswego, NY. It was really nerve-wrecking during the judging session, other than that we had tons of fun such as visiting Niagara fall. But the highlight moment during GENIUS was that each and every one of us got a medal. It brought us huge smiles and laugh, before knowing that we did it, we dedicated ourselves to achieving, and that’s the results. By Uddam Pen (Zaman Alumnus) GENIUS Olympiad was one of the best times of my life and it’s all thanks to my family, friends as well as my teachers who motivated me since my last project turned down in 2012. It was one of the funniest experiences I’ve ever had. It gave me the opportunity to compete against other countries and saw different cultures likewise. The best moment there, of course, was during the announcement of the results that all Cambodian participants had got medals for their projects so far. I’m looking forward to you guys participating in the next Olympiad and GETTING MORE MEDALS. Oh yeah, DO MAKE FRIENDS!!!

By Leeyong Banh 12F “The awardees who hear their names please come up to the stage to receive your awards.” said the MC and started announcing names by names out of each project categories from special awards to honorable mention and ended with gold medalists. As the names started showing continuously on the screen along with the MC’s announcement, every participant got more and more nervous and we ZAMAN students were no different. At that moment, six of us started telling each other “You have to get a gold medal! We all have to get gold medals! Please do not show any of our names till the gold medalist category shows up!” However, things were completely opposite from what we used to do on the previous days: care freely played around with people, made it feel like home and kept our expectation low, only expected for an honorable mention so that we will not feel tensed while enjoying our time happily. But fortunately, the result came out quite amazing. Our ex-12B students, Sovannarong Pech got a silver medal among science projects while his friend Uddam Pen also received a silver medal among Art – Poster Design Category. Among Design - Architect projects, Sovandy Chin (12E) was rewarded with a bronze medal. Meanwhile, Dalika Bora (12E), Somonia Sophoan (12E) and Leeyong Banh (12F) were given a bronze, silver and a gold medal respectively in creative writing. To me, it was one of the most awesome experiences I’ve ever been through. Within a short five days in the campus, the six of us went through lots of things together. We also got to know each other better and made friends with people from many other different countries as well. At the end, I would like to give a short message to the next generations of ZAMAN. As an ex-GENIUS Olympiad participant, I have the urge to encourage those who have a slight interest in joining any Olympiads to not hesitate and give it a try. It’s totally worth it. Other than science, design, art, and creative writing, there will be a music field available for those who love music. For those who want to try creative writing, a great thing to let you guys know, “your grammar doesn’t have to be perfect” said one of the judges I talked to. By Somonia Sophoan 12E When my friends told me that I was one of the finalists of Genius Olympiad, I thought they were trolling me. But surprisingly, they weren’t. I was really shocked and excited at the same time. I’ve never thought that I could make it through to the final. I guess I’m quite lucky. Even though I was glad that I had the chance to compete in the final, I was quite nervous, too. I was just hoping that things would go smoothly and guess what? It was much much better than I expected. Everything was great; the environment, the weather and of course, the food. There were many students coming from other countries and they were really friendly. Moreover, the night of the International Fair was a blast. Honestly, I thought it was going to be boring but I was totally wrong. It was super duper fun! My friends and I were taking photos like crazy. We were too excited, that’s why. And the trip to Niagara Falls was the best of the best! The waterfall was huge and stunning. It is really one of a kind. However, the fun and joy came to an end when it was time to announce the results. I was a bit anxious though. Fortunately, the results turned out pretty well, I got silver medal. I was really happy but then upset again, because the Olympiad was finally over. It all happened so fast. ing Environment Project Olympiad-I-Sweeep 2013 announced our names and we got a bronze medal! We felt over the moon. Our next stop was Los Angeles, which lasted for three days sightseeing and relaxing. Going to Six Flag Amusement Park was one of the best chilling out experience. We were thrilled by the roller coasters and other fast ride. The next place to go was the Universal Studios. We spent the whole day there going on the studio tour and watching shows. We would never forget the Hollywood Boulevard and the dome with telescopes. Our trip came to the end, and it was bid a farewell. We left one of our friends, Visoth, who was going to continue his study there. It was hard to leave the country and our friend behind. I am grateful for having this opportunity to learn about the different cultures and visit breathtaking places. I would like to express my appreciation to school, to beloved teachers and the great supervisor for supporting us and helping in many ways to achieve this success. It was from the 2nd to the 7th of June. Three people including myself, my friend and schoolmate Priyanith and our supervisor Ms. Nurhan Celik departed from Phnom Penh. It took us about one day to arrive to Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, the capital city of Netherlands. I was excited when I arrived there. We received a warm welcome from the INESPOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s volunteers and about two hours later we continued our journey to the bungalows in Hof Domburg. The weather was colder than Amsterdam as itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s located near the ocean. We were all checked in then took a rest. Just one day after arriving from I6:(((3 , VWLOO KDG WR SDUWLFLSDWH LQ DQRWKHU ,QWHUQDWLRQDO 6FLHQFH 2O\PSLDG ,6352 ZLWK the same project in Jakarta, Indonesia. I was alone there with my teacher, Mr. Cihan. We started our journey from Phnom Penh in the morning and we arrived at Jakarta in the evening. During these times, we were sitting in the plane, always eating or walking around the airport. The next day, we went to a university to prepare our booth for the projectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presentation. The judging period was two days. My project was judged on the second day. After that we had a Âż HOG WULS WR 7DPDQ 6DIDUL DQG ZH ZHUH VHW IUHH WR GR ZKDWHYHU ZH ZDQWHG :H IRXQG LW ZDV DQ interesting place â&#x20AC;&#x201C; animals were walking around our buses. That evening we were taken to a very big shopping center where we bought souvenirs for our families. Arriving at the hotel, we were really exhausted. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sleep well that night because the next day was the time to see our results. It was a very nervous and exciting moment when we were waiting to know whether we would win something or not. I hoped to get something better than the bronze medal I had got from I-SWEEEP. Unfortunately, it was announced that I got a bronze medal again. I was a bit disappointed; however, it is still better than getting nothing to take home. After the awards ceremony, some participants had to go back to their home countries. For us, we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go anywhere that day because we needed to prepare, get ready for the journey and especially to gather energy going back home. We were so excited to get back home. However, I had to copy all of the lessons that I had missed during these days. Lastly, I would like to thank the school and teachers for introducing me to and helping me with this kind of Olympiad.

Turkish By Mustafa Tatliyer, Zuhal Tatliyer (Turkish Teachers) Sometimes people might think that why to learn a new language when you already know your own language besides some others. To answer this question, we would like to share this saying with our students â&#x20AC;&#x153;A language means a new friend, new world and knowledge.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; When you are more curious about the world, it is a tool that you all have to help you to communicate with people. Learning a new language is not easy issue as we all know. It needs time, patient and most importantly interest in that language. Last year, many of our students tried their best to open a new door in their life to the new world. It was very challenging for them to learn Turkish, and even sing and read poem in this language. Most of them were really good but unfortunately, we did not have chance to bring all of them to Turkey. After song and poem contests in our school, talented students of Zaman family got chance to see that excited atmosphere of Turkish Olympiads. As teachers and students of Cambodia, we all were very proud of being there. What was most exciting for us was that Cambodia, our second hometown, had a new opportunity to open its doors to new people in Turkey whom really wanted to know about our country. We can say that it was more than an Olympiad for all of us. It meant sharing, knowing and understanding others, and carrying your own culture to another country for people who you can read the excitement of new things from their eyes. It was not easy to leave this already â&#x20AC;&#x153;close-to-the heartâ&#x20AC;? place after a couple of days, as we had to head to Izmir.

Olympiad Izmir hosted the event “International Language and Culture Fair” where I met a huge group of international children who came from more than 140 different countries. The most enjoyable part of the event was the “showcase of cultures” where you can learn interesting background of diverse cultures and have opportunity to show you own. Our next stop was Ankara – capital city of Turkey. There all participants and supervising teachers were placed in one of the most beautiful hotels in the city Kizilcahamam Hotel. I would not exaggerate if I state that competition that lasted ten days was the pin point of that one month journey. Encountering thousands of people from varied backgrounds and performing on the stage to the massive audience was a lifelong experience. Even though I could not get the top prize, I am grateful for being granted this chance to visit such a beautiful place. After competition we returned back to beloved Istanbul. Spending sometime with new families, visiting some places of interest, testing delicious Turkish cuisine in the luxurious restaurants and shopping was the fun activities that spiced up our time in Turkey. When it was time to bid a farewell we wished that our time there would be a bit longer.

We were showing our beloved Cambodia and its culture to visitors. And other students were also describing their countries to other visitors, too. It was one of the best experiences because I met many people and friends over here. Just in 3 days the number of visitors increased to 3 million, it was a very crowded fair that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never met before. After the fair was over, it was time to start our journey again to Turkeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capital city, Ankara. :H UHDFKHG $QNDUD RQ -XQH DQG RXU FRPSHWLWLRQ VWDUWHG DW .Ă&#x2022;]Ă&#x2022;OFDKDPDP +RWHO QHDU Ankara city. From that point, we were very busy because we had to focus on our exams. There were 2000 students from 140 countries to participate in International Turkish Olympiad. Everything was focused on Turkish language and there were many categories such as Singing, Reading Poem, Speaking, Writing and so on. I competed in the Speaking competition. After PDQ\ GD\V WKH H[DPV Âż QLVKHG DQG , JRW WKH %URQ]H PHGDO , ZDV UHDOO\ H[FLWHG , GLGQÂśW H[SHFW any medal because I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know Turkish very well compared to many students; some of them were really good in Turkish and spoke Turkish as natives. After the competition, we went to DQRWKHU FLW\ DQG FDPH EDFN WR Ă¸VWDQEXO WR UHWXUQ WR &DPERGLD :H DUULYHG LQ &DPERGLD RQ July 2013 in the evening. The time that we spent in Turkey was the best time ever. It was a best educational experience for me because we gained many things from this special competition and the relationship between our teacher and us. Even though it happened two months ago, I still remember everything that I did there, especially people and friends that I met during that competition.

By Nittavan Ly 11B May 2013 the 14th was the time for me to leave Cambodia with our school Turkish Olympiads of the 11th Turkish International Olympiads to Turkey with three of our Turkish teachers. The Olympiads began on the 1st of June with the number of 3000 students from 140 different countries. With all the students there, we had so much fun and we shared the cultures of our countries. No one felt it was a competition but everyone felt it was a memorable month of the year. We were all family. We stood tall and praised the peace through the songs and poems. The Olympiads took place in 12 different cities for each continental group. Cambodia was in the 5th group which headed the tour in the southeast of Turkey. It started with Istanbul, Izmir, Mersin, Adana, Hatay, Osmaniye, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Sanliurfa, Batman, Mardin DQG ¿QDOO\ HQGHG LQ 'L\DUEDNLU :H ZHUH IURP GLIIHUHQW FRXQWULHV ZLWK GLIIHUHQW FXOWXUHV EXW we all had an idea of global citizenship. The last day was the sweetest and also the best moment for everybody. We could not bear to be separated from one another. We were like thousand year pals who made us so hard to stop hugging and saying last wishes. By what I have experienced in this big organization, I guess nothing was waste in any of those moments. By Dalen Prak 9E Through song contest at Zaman, I became one of the best participants among my friends and I obtained a chance to join Turkish Olympiads 2013, Turkey. There were many categories in the competition such as singing, dancing, recitation, speaking and etc. I can say that I had an unforgettable experience in my life. To be honest, the reason why I joined the song contest at Zaman was just because of getting high score in Turkish. I can say that I was score-oriented. Unexpectedly, I got the 3rd place in the contest and then my mind started to change. After a long term of practicing the language, singing and the stage usage, I was ready to go to Turkey with my teachers and friends. I was H[FLWHG DQG WKH ¿UVW VWHS LQ 7XUNH\ PDGH PH VKRFNHG 7XUNH\¶V EHDXWLIXO HQYLURQPHQW WKDW , did not expect to see was more than enough for me to love the country. My second shock was the stage. After Istanbul and Yalova, my third stop was Ankara Kizilcahamam and the contest was held on a big stage. We spent about 10 days over there and we went to other cities such as Izmir, Kirsehir, Aksaray, Nigde and at the end Istanbul again. Unfortunately, I was not a successful candidate in the Olympiads because I did not have enough capacity in Turkish as I was playful. I feel regret not to have spent enough time in Turkish and pay attention to what I was warned about. In conclusion, I want to say that I liked every moment of these 33 days of Turkey. Turkish friends, lovely Turkish families and beautiful provinces that I visited were my biggest gift I got. Most importantly, having a chance to visit Turkey and International friends from all over the world were other extra presents for me.

PEACE - bringing together young musicians to emphasize the importance of knowing each other, peaceful co-existence and purposeful social action. In short, to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation, individual by individual, and community by community, locally and globally. ORCHESTRA - establishing an annual â&#x20AC;&#x153;Play for Peaceâ&#x20AC;? performance in NYC by these curious young artists, performing repertoire comprised musically of classical instrumentalists from United States, ethnic instrumentalists from different countries, along with a local NYC choir.

Ultimately, the goal of the World Peace Orchestra experience is to assist each youth to better harness her/his capacity for creative social action through the universal language of music making, an open exchange of cultural views and customs, and participation within an international network of young people eager to carry out projects back in their home city and country. On behalf of its young players, the World Peace Orchestra commits to widespread dissemination of the students’ social action projects through the establishment of a worldwide “peace based” initiatives network. Throughout each year of this year-round work, WPO strives to help its participants discover that people, no matter their age, better understand others when they openly share their own constructive viewpoints and dreams. To make this possible, the WPO seeks to mobilize youth from across the globe around the theme of peace, utilizing the transformative and deeply personal impact of music making and music sharing. Imagining a world that can be “otherwise” is the goal. In sum, the World Peace Orchestra has an ambitious agenda to embolden itself and the youth it serves to build “communication bridges” between diverse cultures, carry out activities to raise public awareness of select social problems through online and print media, and create in-depth partnerships with other key national and international organizations that are active in the pursuit of social responsibility and action. WPO Summer Camp What is even more remarkable is what happens before and after this performance, what bookends it and gives it meaning. Students who have been selected to join the orchestra will receive in-depth training during all-expenses paid, month long summer camp, to be held in NYC during August and September of each year. In addition, they will have the opportunity to travel around the U.S., exploring various cultural and historical treasures in NYC, while also visiting Washington D.C., Boston and Philadelphia. To round out this experience, camp days will include various sports and social activities, and structured workshops where experts in media production and distribution will teach each student how to express their views through simple to sophisticated use of electronic and print media. The orchestra had started on the 10th of September so I got only 17 days left and I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the music notes yet but my friends were like professional musicians and they started to teach me how to play better. After that, I got my music notes from of the conductor. He was from Panama. I tried my best to learn the music as quickly as possible because it was harder than Khmer music. The instrument that I played was called â&#x20AC;&#x153;roneat Aekâ&#x20AC;?, a Khmer traditional instrument. Tea in Turkish Social Life Although tea passed through Turkey as part of the Silk Road trade in the 1500s, it did not become a part of the daily life until the end of 19th century. In 1878, Mehmet Izzet, then the governor of Adana, published the Çay Risalesi (Tea Pamphlet), touting the health benefits of drinking tea. Although coffee was still the favorite beverage in this period, tea consumption began to spread as tea houses opened in Sultanahmet, Istanbul. Tea gradually became a cheaper alternative to coffee; four glasses of tea could be purchased for the price of one cup of Turkish coffee.

Türk Çayý Nasýl Yapýlýr? 1. Büyük çaydanlýðý suyla doldurun. Suyu iyice kaynayana kadar ýsýtýn. 2. Küçük demliðe biraz siyah çay yapraðý koyun. Alttaki büyük çaydanlýktan küçük olana kaynamýþ sudan dökün, ancak alt kýsýmda biraz su kalmasýna dikkat edin. Büyük çaydanlýðý tekrar ateþe koyarken ateþi kýsýn. Küçük çaydanlýðý da büyüðün üzerine yerleþtirin. Çayýn çökmesi için 15 dakika bekleyin. Ateþi kapalý konuma getirin ve çaydanlýklarý ocaktan alýn. 3. Çayý süzgeç yardýmýyla küçük demlikten lale þeklinde olan bardaklara dökün. Çay bardaðýnýn ¼ oranýnda dolu olmasýna dikkat edin. Açýk çayý tercih edenler için bardaða çokca sýcak su ilave edin. Koyu (demli) çay sevenler için az miktarda sýcak su koyun. 4. Çay bardaðýnýn altýna tabak koyun.Tabaðýn kenarýna çay kaþýðý ve þeker yerleþtirin. Çayý tazeyken hemen servis edin.

Travel to any town in Turkey and you are sure to find a tea house or a tea garden. In smaller towns and rural areas, tea houses are the preferred social hub where people meet. In larger cities and touristic regions, tea houses welcome the young and the elderly as well as many foreigners. Tea gardens, another social venue to drink tea, gained popularity in the 1950s, especially in Istanbul, and became the places where families went for recreation. It is important to note that the Turkish tea garden is very different from a Japanese tea garden (roji). While the latter is quiet and serene and was developed in conjunction with the Japanese tea ceremony, Turkish tea gardens are the hubs of social activity where kids running around, music playing, and lively conversation among various people ranging from students, to businessmen to retirees and foreigners take place. Today, Turks have one of the highest per capita consumption rates of tea, averaging about 1,000 cups per year. This high rate owes itself to the availability of places to consume tea, social customs and traditions, and domestic production along the Eastern Black Sea coast. How to Make Turkish Tea 1. Fill the bottom part of the tea kettle with water and heat it until the boiling point. 2. Put some black Turkish tea in the top kettle. Pour some boiling water from the bottom kettle into the top kettle, and add some cold water to the remaining water left at the bottom kettle. Place the bottom tea kettle back on the burner, but turn the burner down to low heat. Place the top kettle on top of the bottom kettle. Wait 15-20 minutes for the tea leaves to be infused. Turn off the heat and remove both kettles from the burner. 3. Pour the Turkish tea from the top kettle into traditional tulip-shaped tea glasses using a tea strainer. Pour tea for the quarter of the glass and fill the rest with hot water from the bottom kettle. Depending on the preference for strong or light tea, you can add more tea or more hot water. 4. Place a saucer under the glass so that you may hold the glass. Put a spoon and some sugar cubes on the saucer. Serve the Turkish tea hot.

After the presentation, we went down to the building’s gym and did some sports activities with the students from CIA. It was really fun and after that we left NOCC and arrived back at ZIS. I learned a lot from this event because it taught me that the Olympics isn’t about winning but participating because everyone’s a winner.

Hi, my name is Udom. I consider myself very fortunate that I got a chance to study at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, from 2002 to 2006. Formerly known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Robert College,â&#x20AC;? it was established in 1863 as the oldest American college outside the U.S. border. In 1971, the PDLQ FDPSXV NQRZQ DV WKH Âł6RXWK &DPSXVÂ´ Âą RQH RI WKH PRVW QDWXUDOO\ EHDXWLIXO FDPSXVHV LQ the world) was passed on to the Turkish government. Nonetheless, the university retains its tradition of using English as the medium of instruction. Many professors at Bogazici University generally received their bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree from there, and eventually pursued their advanced degrees in Europe or the United States, including at many of the Ivy Leagues universities VXFK DV +DUYDUG DQG 3ULQFHWRQ ,W LV WKHUHIRUH QRW VXUSULVLQJ WKDW WKH TXDOLW\ RI HGXFDWLRQ DW Bogazici University is on par with world standard. As in previous years, This year p/e athletic department will organize activities, tournaments and school teams events. Football league which has become a time- honored custom will continue, besides table tennis, badminton, 3 on 3 street ball tournaments will be organized. Different from the previous years, this year, our students on the girl side will be able to attend most of the events, therefore we are expecting girls to be part of these events. There will be boys and girls football and volleyball school teams and these teams will have games with other international schools such as ispp, northbridge, hope, logos. Welcome Note from Zaman High-School Mathematics Department Dear parents, colleagues, student and all Zaman staff!!! Primarily, I would like to express my warm greetings to all Zaman High-School administrators, teachers, staff, students and parents on behalf of all members of Zaman High-School Mathematics Department. I wish all of Zaman staff a very fruitful, joyful and successful academic year. Secondly, I would like to welcome our new local and foreign mathematics teachers who have joined our school recently. The rich and colourful Cambodian culture fascinates me. Since I had previously read about Cambodia, her culture and history, I felt I was in a very familiar place when I visited Angkor Wat; I was able to read each story and relive the images depicted on the stone walls. I seek to instill the same impression in my students. Encouraging myself and my peers in the English Department, we facilitate better learning experience year by year. Obviously, academic excellence and guidance have been two pillars that strengthen the process of our studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; DFDGHPLF DQG VRFLDO SURJUHVV (QJOLVK VXEMHFW XQLÂż HV ERWK ZKLOH ZH HQKDQFH RXU OLQJXLVWLF skills; we also explore different people, places and times through literature. By Ali Yilmaz (English Teacher) I am a teacher of English from Turkey. I have been living and travelling outside of Turkey for about 7 years now. I have a BA in English and American Studies. I came to Cambodia in July, 2013. My hobbies are reading daily newspapers, watching popular TV shows, riding my motorbike, and visiting other countries, so that I can be introduced to new cultures. I try to visit as many countries as possible while I can. My favourite pastime activity is going out for a coffee. I think, a cup of coffee is the best company. This year, I am the homeroom teacher of 7A and 7B, and I am teaching English Writing to grades 7 & 8. I am glad to be part of Zaman. I believe that working at ZIS will be a stepping stone in my teaching career. Originally I am from the Republic of Ireland and grew up in the capital city, which is Dublin. After spending 4 years studying Journalism and Visual Media in University College Dublin, the biggest university in Europe. As a new, fresh faced college graduate with jobs few and far between, I decided to pack up and relocate to Phnom Penh. Having visited the country many times during my summer vacations from university, I knew this was the place for me and found my feet pretty quickly. Now after 5 years in the Kingdom, I have come to call Phnom Penh my home. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you over the coming months while living up to the responsibility of crafting your young minds and helping to shape your future.

Department By Sean Wayman (English Teacher) I went to Hurlstone Agricultural High School, which was a rather unusual place. It consisted of a large farm on the rural-urban fringe of Sydney and featured an historic colonial property FDOOHG 0DFTXDULH +RXVH ZKLFK ZDV VHW RQ WKH WRS RI D ODUJH KLOO :H ZHUH QHYHU DOORZHG WR go inside and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know who lived inside.) The school had two main groups of students: the boarders and the day students. The boarders most came from grazing properties in the far West of New South Wales that were more than 100 kilometres away from the nearest town. The boarders stayed in a boarding house, where many of the teachers lived too. Most of the boardersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; parents were sheep, cattle or wheat farmers and they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mix with the day students much. All students at the school had to study agriculture as well as the normal subjects. We grew vegetables, learnt to drive tractors, milked cows and herded sheep as part of our regular school routine. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like agriculture too much though: I preferred History and English. Overall, I would say I was a quiet student who didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t participate too much in school. By Zarina Dustova (English Teacher) I was born in Tajikistan on a warm sunny day of September. I lived in Dushanbe for 10 years and one year in England. Subsequently, I moved to Cambodia in 2010. I came from a big family. In my spare time, I like reading, swimming, biking in the sun, going to the movies, BBQ, and visiting family and friends. My work life prior to this had been quite varied from working as a steward in the Merchant Navy on various cruise liners, container ships and cross channel ferries, to a brief career in sales to working in construction mainly as an electrician. I quite like working outdoors in the summertime but in a cold long winter WKHUHÂśV QRWKLQJ ZRUVH LWÂśV QR MRE IRU WKH ROG 7KH ÂżUVW WHDFKLQJ H[SHULHQFH , HYHU KDG ZDV LQ Zurich Switzerland 2006 for 2 weeks apart of my University course. I enjoyed it very much DQG PD\EH WKLV ZDV WKH VSDUN WKDW PDGH PH ZDQW WR WHDFK ODWHU RQ 7KLV SDVW ÂżYH \HDUV ,ÂśYH taught in Thailand, England, China and now Cambodia at all levels from kindergarten, Infants, teenage, secondary right through to adults. By far my toughest challenge was teaching Kindergarten, I had to exercise the patience of a saint. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t my choice to teach kindergarten, but I guess from the very nature of my degree I was somewhat stereotyped. My hobbies and interests include yoga, swimming, Mountain Biking, travel, reading, acting, dance, the arts and music. Being here I feel a tremendous need to teach, to educate, to inspire and be a contributor to the positive change in my students. I see a need. The purpose of this competition is to measure studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fast-calculation skills and give them an opportunity to demonstrate their mathematical skill of using four basic operations for given numbers to obtain 24. Six different JURXSV RI VWXGHQWV SDUWLFLSDWHG LQ WKLV FRPSHWLWLRQ DQG WKH FRPSHWLWLRQ ODVWHG IRU VL[ GD\V 8-9-10-11-14 October 2013). And all of these classes selected four of their classmates to represent their classes in the competition. ABOUT GAME 24 Game 24 is a popular mathematical game which is organized for students in many different schools around the world. There are different versions of this game. In this game that we organized in our school, students are expected to make a mathematical expression using the digits IRXU EDVLF RSHUDWLRQV [ Âˇ DQG SDUHQWKHVLV WR JHW 7R GR WKLV VWXGHQWV DUH given 30 seconds. Whoever gets 24 with their correct mathematical expression, that group gets 5 points. At the end of the competition, the group who has answered most number of questions correctly achieved championship title. This measures studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fast-calculation skills and challenge them against time. During the contest, some interesting and tricky questions were asked to the audience and awarded those who answered correctly.

We gave her a present, and she also gave many presents to me, Sodalin, Rachny, Meychou, Yanuth and others who had birthdays in this month. lt was a good time for me to enjoy with my teacher and friends.
