ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

A message from your Hello, everyone. It’s the Student Editorial Board here. Another quarter has passed and many things have happened and it’s normal to be unable to remember every single thing that happened. Maybe, we will forever remember events that have actually played an essential part in our school year, but for the rest, we tend not to remember most of it after time passes, and we will forget about it eventually. Moreover, for everything you participated in, you only see it from one point of view and there might be loads of things that you missed or couldn’t understand unless you share another’s point of view. This is where we, The Student Editorial Board, come in. We put together all the experiences and the accounts

of each quarter into a book of memories or a magazine so that we can always turn back to the page of events that we missed. We worked really hard on the magazine and we’d like to introduce the new magazine issue to you all. In the following pages, you will find articles relating to education, culture, sports, etc. More specifically, there are articles about IFLC, school field trips, important events, educational articles, and entertaining articles. We hope you enjoy your time reading Zaman’s 103rd magazine issue.

student editorial board Bringing entertainment and excitement to our fellow students is our duty as the student body for the magazine. Each and every page that is filled with letters of feelings or a memory of an unforgettable moment is printed and shared with everyone who reads it. Before that, however, we must go through the elimination round by choosing any of the school events to write about, then turn in the article before the deadline. I chose to write about STEM Festival last year to apply for a position on the Editorial Board. It feels like it’s one of the biggest events at our school because students have to prepare a lot of various things just to get ready but they all enjoy doing them and so do I. It was a week after I had submitted the article, I was nervous while waiting for the result. As we all know “there are times when things won’t go the way you want them to because desire is just a desire and sometimes hard work is not enough”, but I was called out to the meeting room and

that made me so happy. I enjoyed the meeting even though it was a little bit intense at first and everyone was so serious about the school magazine improvements. We decide things and divide tasks between members. I was in a pinch, getting nowhere with all the tasks and school work. Moreover, the term exams were coming up which makes it become a pile of stress but with just a little time arrangement and effort, the mountain of stress will finally become something enjoyable. This actually helps me a lot, it makes me improve my time management, communication skills, and I was able to experience what a professional meeting would be like. I am looking forward to the next semester issue and I am looking forward to the continual work with our great editorial board members, teachers, and camera-crew.

Community of Compassion Where I went to university there lived a man called John Pittman. But to all of Newcastle he was Johnny Rainbow, Johnny Bongo or just Johnny.

ing but that never stopped him bringing the community together. Everyone had a Johnny story and when he died in February 2015 the whole city noticed and many people attended his funeral. People drew rainbows on Darby street where he used to hangout.

He called himself - Happy King Spirit or Johnny Day Brightener. Johnny was a man who brought the community together and reminded me that charity is not just a responsibility but a privilege. Charity can bind us and remind He would spray paint his beard purple. us we are all in this together whether it is for a large He would call at you from across the street: group of people or just for one man- the act of giving is its own reward. Everyone knew Johnny, for two dollars, he’d sing you a song, he’d listen to your problems he’d tell you a story he’d give you a massive grin or you could just sit on the curb and have a chat. If you asked he’d take you to his gallery (or rather his home). Where you would see his wonderful and weird art or read one of his many stories. He had been writing, painting and singing since he was a young man. He loved colour and strange shapes, anything to bring light and happiness. Ahhhhhhh……..the Kingdom of Wonder “We are the sum total of our experiences. Those experiences – be they positive or negative – make us the person we are, at any given point in our lives. And, like a flowing river, those same experiences, and those yet to come, continue to influence and reshape the person we are, and the person we become. None of us are the same as we were yesterday, nor will be tomorrow.” B.J. Neblett Forever etched in my mind is an experience that has shaped me, in part, to be who I am today. It was an experience granted to me by two uncanny individuals who didn’t ask for anything in return. Hailing from a country renowned for its efficient and effective governance, deliberately leaving behind the meritocratic and multicultural society of Singapore to the Kingdom of Wonder wasn’t at all easy in the initial years of being here. The early years were inundated with references to how much better things were back home and how I missed and longed for the high standards and quality that people stood up to and expected in return. Looking back, it seems like the entire experience I had that day was orchestrated at just the precise moment to drive a lesson to me . I guess Julius Caesar was right when he said ‘Experience is the teacher of all things!’ It happened on one sweltering hot day in mid April, 13 years ago. I was in a car, heading back home from Takmao

8

after visiting a friend. Despite having a break from my then little children who were always clamoring for attention, and being chauffer driven back home in a cool air-conditioned car, I was feeling very unhappy; a general dissatisfaction with life and wishing for more. I remember cursing the heat and waiting anxiously to get out of my current predicament to something bigger and better. Bitterness was certainly brewing deep and my negative thoughts were on a mission to fuel it further. With my shoulders slouched, elbows resting on the car’s window sill and face resting on the ends of the palm, I looked out at the passing fast vehicles dejectedly and sighed deep and wondered if things would ever get better. Will I ever feel better? Another deep sigh escaped. Settling in a new place has its fair share of challenges especially when you leave a haven like Singapore. I was certainly home sick! It was there at the traffic junction that I witnessed a remarkable sight; a middle-aged local man and his wife ‘cruising’ along the street. What’s special about that you may be wondering? The middle aged local man was a paraplegic. Using his bare hands, he ‘rode’ his bike to inch it forward with the weight of his wife at the back of him. The beauty of the moment didn’t just end with that.

ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

The wife had her arms around his waist while leaning against him and resting her face against his shoulder. Despite the man’s handicap and their apparent financial status, they appeared to be so in love with each other and life! They seemed genuinely happy and contented despite the obvious adversities of their lives. Questions were raging through my mind. Everything about their appearance and demeanor contradicted with all that I had grown to know and believe in. Their joyous chatter and smiles dumbfounded me as they passed me by. Is this what acceptance and unconditional love looks like? How could they be happy and still smile despite their abject poverty? Back from where I come from, poverty was shunned and certainly not visible. People were always unhappy with their state and wanted more, wanted better and weren’t satisfied till the objects of their desires were achieved only to clamor for more and more and more. Moreover, there was a stark difference between us; I, able bodied and in a cool, comfortable car, was unhappy and bitter, while they were out under the hot sweltering sun, handicapped and poverty stricken but happy. How could they still appear to be so joyful despite being poor and disabled? In earnestness I pondered deeply, who was really the poor one here? Who’s the one with the real disability to function fully in life? As they inched passed me slowly, the wife caught me staring at them with bewilderment and she smiled back. Truly I have never seen anything like this on the streets of Singapore. The couple would have been fined for sure for riding on an unregistered vehicle out on a busy street and endangering the safety of the others and disrupting traffic for

‘driving’ below the set speed limits! I felt embarrassed for ‘staring’ at them in that manner but I simply couldn’t help it. That smile is still fresh in my mind - it was the most beautiful, unpretentious smile I had ever seen on a woman. She mesmerized me. She had oh so little and yet she seemed to have so much to give; a life bursting with joy, contentment and what a smile she offered me. Money, sweltering mid-April heat, status symbols nor a disabled husband stole the essence of who she was nor crippled her joy for life. Just before the husband made a left turn, she waved at me, as little children do here when they see a foreigner. Her simplicity and especially her contentment touched me even more. In a world clamoring for more and bigger and better and an insatiable need to fill a bottomless pit with more wants and needs, she appeared to have found contentment regardless of the state she was in. I remembered staring back at her blankly as I was simply too stunned and dumbfounded by the sight of life that had just greeted me and passed me by. Serendipity? Call it whatever you may. I know I was given a gift; a new pair of lens.

International Festival of Language and Culture Cambodia, Turkey, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Russia, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Canada, USA, Germany, Italy, France, Botswana, and many more… From Europe to Africa, Central Asia to Southeast Asia…. Different nations, religions, ideologies, and cultures were united under Zaman roof on 26th March at Koch Pich Hall D. We have all seen the harmony of colours…We all listened, delightful music playing around, and seeing various cultures representing themselves. We all tasted the maximum level of love and tolerance in the culture festival. I don’t know what could be more beautiful than seeing this harmony in today’s world which can be seen covered with racism, terrorism, and war. I don’t know what would best describe the acceptance and patience other than IFLC Cambodia. A scholar says , “Love is the reason for existence and it is the strongest tie that binds creatures together”. Loving the creatures simply because they exist is the best reason, but we see people around who still cannot place these sentences into their hearts. While there are people around who cannot find a tiny place

in their life for others, I am happy to be surrounded by people who have a chair for everyone in their hearts. Even though I’ve written pages of essays here, nothing would be enough to describe what Zaman Family has shared and experienced at Koch Pich. All I can do is to thank to Zaman Admins for this big and lovely organization. I also want to thank embassies, invisible heroes, celebrities of Cambodia, teachers, students, and staff who put their hands and great efforts to make this harmony happen. Whatever goes around comes around… We all tried to reflect our understanding, love and tolerance to each other and I am sure we will be loved and tolerated. And this permanent love will also make this harmony permanent… CULTURE

Before the culture festival (IFLC), we had to prepare for several days. I didn’t want to participate at first as my cultural items are so far away from me in Cambodia. This did not make me mad but I wasn’t so happy about it either.

As we were getting closer to the festival day, Ms. Sibel told us this would be even more important as we would perform for the VIP guests which gave me an even heavier feeling of responsibility because I didn’t want to disappoint her.

We did a lot of things at the festival that were pretty enjoyable but I did not get to taste all the food. This culture festival also gave me the opportunity to express myself and where I come from. I guess that the school had prepared this festival nicely and lots of people came on the day.

When the day finally came, I was filled with mixed feelings of nervousness and excitement. I was patiently waiting for my turn while being in charge of the music for the other performers. When it was finally my turn, all my co-performers gathered and anxiety took over for a while but my confidence came back the moment I set foot on stage and we performed perfectly, so said Ms. Sibel. This raised my mood and got me excited for my other performance later that day.

This was the best festival that I have ever been to as I was able to see different peoples’ cultures, including the ones outside of Asia, like Australia, Africa, and Europe. I hope for the school to prepare this again. Name: Gabriel Sempe Class: 8 Int

When I was scheduled by Ms. Sibel to perform at the Culture Festival, I felt a sense of responsibility that I had to take, just like the previous times I’ve performed.

After long hours of managing other performances and walking around checking the booths, I was tired when it came to performing my last song. Messing up on certain parts and unable to start, I felt miserable until I looked backstage where Ms. Sibel was standing with a smile and told me to go on, and with the support of the crowd, I recovered and finished the performance with fair satisfaction. Despite all this, the day was overall a wonderful experience and I would love to participate again. Only this time with a better responsibility over myself.

Before the festival, Ms. Sibel spent a lot of her time preparing me and my partner, Hoklay. We also spent some time with 11B class as they were performing as well.

IFLC was a big event organised by Zaman showcasing the diversity of language, culture, and cuisine from across the world. We had around 32 booths of different nations under one roof. Students tried to engage with the visitors and the local community through initiating and participating in various social, cultural, and educational activities. Seeing students from different cultures was just like different colours shining altogether. It was a delightful experience for all, as the event had enriched our thoughts with international mindedness. The festival gave students the opportunity to demonstrate their talents in presenting the culture and traditions of different countries. I hope and look forward to seeing such platforms, which provide our students and community an understanding of the wealth of our cultures. This will help to shape a world that is mindful of diversity but grounded in tolerance and peace!

INTERVIEW WITH ADDA ANGEL

Adda Angel started playing her guitar and singing when she was 13. It’s her biggest passion. Her dad was in the navy in America for a few years and he had been pushing her to learn English. Her father would want her to focus on school but one day on his birthday, without her dad knowing, she played him a birthday song. He was surprised and shocked since he never knew that she could play the guitar. Despite going through many obstacles in her life, she knows that she will reach her goal if she keeps on doing her best. For her, music is life, expressing how she is feeling and how life has been going through every word of the lyrics. She sings them with passion and expresses her emotion by remembering the moment when she first wrote the songs. Recently, Adda can tell that her goal is within reach, she needs only a little more time and patience before that happen. What made you enjoy singing? A: Well, it started with my father who used to have a band, maybe in the 70s or 80s….. It’s actually more like a blood line. I just love singing and playing the guitar. It’s like a passion for this field. When I was 13, I started practising the guitar on my own and during that time I wrote an original song. What is the most successful thing you achieved in your life? A: I haven’t achieved success yet…. but I’m going there. How is your co-worker-working environment? A: It’s very fun, like we share the same passion, we joke from time to time and you know the original author is talented. Do you have any tips for vocal training? A: I don’t do vocal training. I don’t take classes for vocals. I just sing then listen to my singing and find where it’s off so I can improve. 14 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

How do you get into this field? What inspired you? A: How? It’s just that I love singing and I would hold a bottle of water and sing around with it.... (laugh) What is the last movie/book that made you cry? A: The notebook. It’s a really good book. I love it. But I like watching comedy movies more than Chick Flicks. What makes you laugh no matter what? A: (Thinking for a while). Actually, I laugh a lot. Pretty much at anything.

What is your goal? A: To achieve my goals inside this field and to travel. I have already travelled around Asia, like Japan, Hong Kong, and so on, so I want to travel to London this time. How is everything? Is it going well with your career? A: I’m gonna have one contract with a company….. so I’m pretty good. (smile)

If you were not singing, what would you be doing? A: I wanted to open an instrument shop. I love selling guitars, keyboards… It’s something that makes people express themselves. If you had a super power, what would it be? A: I love this question!! (Excited) I wanted to be a time traveler. I really enjoy watching movies that revolve around time travelling. It’s like you can go back and forth, to the future and past then back to future. Why? Is it because you want to change your bad moments or is it because you loved life more before? A: Well I wanted this power because….… (Gloomy) You know, so I can change things if I don’t like it…. Like you can go back and forth. What is the best gift you have ever received? A: An IPhone. There’s another one though. (Excitement). The camera that I got from my friend. She gave it to me as a present. I was so surprised, like wow!! Because I’d been saving for months in order to buy one. Based on your experience at this event, how likely are you to attend our future events? A: I would love to if it’s possible. But I have to check my schedule first. (laugh) How do you feel about our recent event, IFLC? A: I loved the reactions of the fans! And I thought the group…choir… yes, the chorus group, it was so awesome. How do you improve your English? A: I practise speaking in front of the mirror. My English was very poor before but then when I saw how well my classmate from my school could speak, from ACE could speak, I felt motivated, like wanting to be able to speak like them. My first experience at IFLC

Through Ms. Myra Castaneda and our group, The Filipino Choir, it was indeed a pleasant experience to have shared our very own Filipino culture through our dance, “Lulay. Singing the Khmer National Anthem imbibing the Cambodian Culture was emotional for us the Filipino Choir. I congratulate the faculty, staff, and the students who put together such a huge show which brought awareness about different cultural identities but at the same time reduces racial prejudices. It was a multi-collaboration of talent, skills, time and not to forget most of all the heart (emotion) which completed it all. It was a happy Cultural Community with beautiful diversities. Seeing people from different races and cultures, watching them eagerly and excitedly preparing their countries pride which ranges from food, personal apparels, songs, and more. Students who were preparing for their special performances are nervously practicing their part. It was sight of a concerted effort by the faculty, staff, students, and guests that this event took flight with coloured banners unfurling pride.

MESSAGES FROM THE PARTICIPANTS Genius is an international Olympiad, which occurs every year in New York. It gathers individuals from all around the world to help solve the world’s environmental issues. It was this that caused my friend Vichet and I to join this competition. One of the biggest inspirations for our projects was our concern for the environment. We looked in to using waste paper and fermenting it into sugar so that it Name: Sokheang Dieng can be converted into flexible fuel, E-85. Due to the various Class: 11 INT needs for our project, I feel a mix of both anxiety and excitement happening simultaneously. All in all, I feel like this is going to be a worthwhile experience. I always wanted to join something like the Olympiads and other international competitions. The reason why I wanted to is because I want to be challenged. I want to test out my limits and to gain something I’ve never experienced before. While I was doing my project, I was really excited because I didn’t expect the outcome, but even though Name: Dawin Lee I was excited, I still had concerns because we had so many Class: 11 E obstacles but we eventually pulled through it all. It was really a fun-thrilling moment in my life and I would participate in this kind of event in the future. Getting accepted on to the Genius Olympiad programme is one of the biggest achievements of our life. Before we reached our goal, however, we’d been working so hard, unlike our work on any other projects we had done before. Initially, we tried out many of our project options and waded through several failures until we found a convenient project with the most potential. Without expecting any outcome, we just put all of our effort in to doing it. When the result was released with our names on it, we still couldn’t believe that we’d come this far. Finally, we are both really looking forward to the upcoming competition and to reap what we have sowed. Last but not least, we’d like to say thanks to our supervisor, Ms. Zainab, for guiding us and encouraging us in doing this project, together with Mr. Mustafa Ozgur and our friends for always supporting us. Music in Genius Olympiad Genius Olympiad is an international Olympiad for high school students which is held in Oswego every year. Zaman International school represents Cambodia in Genius Olympiads with various subjects and remarkable projects. The projects mostly relate to ecology, business, creative writing, art, and science. Recently, music was also added as another category to open Genius’ doors for music lovers. There are three categories in music which are solo performance, group performance, and composing. After this addition to genius, it brought the question’’ Why not us?’’ to our mind… Most of our students and colleagues know Johan for his outstanding performance from the charity event 2016. Johan and the whole team gave us a great time and we all enjoyed every moment of it. Johan is a new student who has joined the Zaman Family this year and he helped me remarkably in every music project that I was and am handling. This gave me a chance to know him closer and also helped me realize his patience and talent for music. Then I asked myself “why not Johan?” The only requirements from the event was a student who loves music and has the ability to write new lyrics about environmental issues to an already composed song. He spent his valuable time writing his new lyrics to a song he used to sing during music classes. The song ‘little do you know’ turned into ‘Faith in Humanity’ with his magic touch. After he completed the lyrics process, the rest was something we both enjoyed doing; MV and recording!!!! After recording in the studio and the shooting was done, combining these two was a piece of cake. The very last step of our preparations was to sit down and enjoy our new MV with a cup of coffee and wait until the finalists were announced. Days were too slow, especially for me, waiting for 5th April for the results. Because it was the school’s first time joining Genius in this category, I was as excited as Johan. Then…Yay…!!!! We saw our name on the finalist list. Johan was able to make it to the finals in Oswego among 143 contestants. I knew that he could do it. The first step to being successful at something is to believe it and then go for it… I wish him good luck in Oswego in June 2016 for finals. I am sure he will do his best to make it to the gold medal. He believes in the power of music… and we believe in him… Genius, like gold and precious stones, is chiefly prized because of its rarity… 24 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

Thoughts about Genius My experience in preparing students for Genius started in 2011 and I must say that there has been no turning back ever since then. I remember this occasion as one in which students from the various disciplines came together to solve real-world issues relating to the environment. I was very impressed by the initiative of the students and the effort they placed in trying to find solutions to create a better future. On the last day of the 2011 event, an announcement was made which thrilled me; an inclusion of a creative writing category for the 2012 event! As an ESL teacher present at the global event, I had hoped for a wider scope of the English subject so that I could get directly involved and help our students participate and succeed in this category. Well, you could say, I got my cake and I ate it! Every international event presents a myriad of opportunities not only to the participants but to the supervisors as well. As such I have gained a wealth of experience in preparing students for such competitions and a new perspective towards desire, diligence and determination. Firstly, the experience has taught me how to be persistent and confident in helping my students cope with the many difficulties they may be facing in reaching their dreams of winning the competition. I found that my skills in challenging and encouraging students to give their best and not give up, got sharper.

Secondly, as you are aware, apart from merely joining the event to win, the Genius competition actually opens up many windows of opportunities for the students to recognize the global issues we are facing and serve as a platform of inspiration for saving our world and finding workable solutions to making this world a better place. I was and continue to be ecstatic to be part of this endeavor in helping students make contributions to a better tomorrow. Thirdly, apart from this ecstasy, the experience has also taught me to have an ‘eye’ to identify and spot talents amongst students and guide them to realize their full potential. There is no greater reward to me than to help my students do just that; help them recognize their talent and potential and achieve success through collaborative efforts. It doesn’t just end here. I could go on with the numerous ways I have gained through helping students, but for now this would suffice. In a nutshell, partaking in the Genius Olympiad competition is hard work yet it aspires me to inspire others. I have seen firsthand the wonderful affect it can have on students andI hope many more students will participate in this Olympiad. I am very proud of the students who have decided to be involved in such a marvelous project and make a difference. I wish this year’s students the best of luck.

ANGELS AND DEMONS: BOOK REVIEW BY: DAN BROWN A race between knowledge and secrets with the existence of a very ancient city on the line. The verge of extinction of religion. The true face of science behind its mask. He pays a visit to a Swiss research facility to analyze a cryptic symbol which leads him to a deadly adventure where darkness seeps from the depths of a long-forgotten organization, the Illuminati. In order to prevent the annihilation of the Vatican City by an innovative, powerful ticking bomb, he has to work together with a mysterious scientist, Vittoria Vetra, on a quest through crowded city squares to the most secretive vault on earth to put the puzzle pieces together. All this must be done in a time span of less than a day before it’s too late, but he, Robert Langdon, is nothing more than a symbologist at Harvard. Will Langdon and Vetra make it in time to

spare the Vatican City? Will they be able to stop the once unfathomable brotherhood of the Illuminati from rising once more? Dan Brown cleverly put together a masterpiece comprised with the knowledgeable, the intelligent, the mighty, and the powerful, and brewed them into a twisted concoction filled with schemes in a battle for time. When you expect the perplexing game to end, other problems arise in its stead. All those who prefer mysterious and puzzling adventures will definitely enjoy this phenomenal book.

“They thought they were alone. They were wrong”. This is a quote from the book ‘The 100: Day 21’. This book was one of the best books I have ever read. It was written by Kass Morgan. The author wrote this book with flair, everything about this book is perfect. A reason that this book is a really good book is because it is science fiction. It is set at a time when Earth has become radioactive and couldn’t support life after World War 3 and 100 teenagers were sent down to Earth from the airship where humanity now lives to check whether Earth is able to sustain life again. It has been 21 days since the one hundred landed on Earth. They’re the only humans to set foot on Earth in centuries, or so they thought. The group faced unknown enemies and Wells tried to keep the group together after a tragic attack. While Clarke tried searching for other colonists on Earth. Bellamy set his mind on finding his sister. And back at the ship Glass faves an impossible choice between the love of her life and life itself. This is book is one of the best books you will ever read. It’s a must read for all teenagers and high schoolers. It teaches and educates us to keep the world safe for the sake of our race and how bad things might get without the planet we enjoy our lives on.

STUDY TOUR On 17 February 2016, Students in Grade 12 A, B,E,F at Zaman International School conducted one-day study tour to Khmer Rouge tribunal court ( Extraordinary Trial in Cambodian Court) and continued to visit Cheung Eak Genocide Center, Tuol Sleng museum (S-21). All these places are related to Democratic Kampuchea regime. Democratic Kampuchea regime’s duration was 3 years 8 months and 20 days, starting from 17 April 1975 to 07 January 1979. A TOUR OF RAFFLES What I like most about university and college tours is not just about having an alternative way of spending my study time but it’s also about how we can get a much better idea on where we should choose to study in. We went on a college tour at Raffles on the 22nd of April, which was quite a pleasant and knowledgeable tour and what made it even better was that it was on a Friday. We made our way there by bus and we weren’t hesitant to take pictures together along the way so that we can make more memories of our senior year.

colleagues explaining to us about majoring in business, interior design, fashion design and multimedia design. They were quite informative and inspiring people. They also told us about their special program where we could spend 2 years studying in one of their schools and finish our degree in one year in a different branch abroad, this would be great for those who love traveling while studying. Also we learned how important design majors are as well. Afterwards we were given a tour of the college’s facilities, which was quite decent and we finished our tour yet again with more group photos before heading back to school.

Once we arrived there, we made our way to the sixth floor where we were given a welcoming speech from It was quite a pleasant trip for us and I hope we can do the college director along with other speeches from his it again soon. Name: Johnny Chung Class: 12A

A Trip to Soun Soben Resort In Cambodia, International Women’s right day is celebrated on 8 March. We have one day holiday and most people usually go out with their family. Particularly, it is one of the special occasions that most husbands buy gifts for their wives. That is why it was a special day for me and my colleagues, friends, because we had an exciting trip to Soun Soben Resort on 8 March 2016. I was so excited because it was my first experience over there and I really wondered how it was. At 8 o’clock in the morning, we met at school and head off around 9 o’clock. At first we expected only 40 minutes to reach the resort but due to traffic jam, it took an hour. We arrived there around 10 o’clock. Soun Soben is really beautiful place with green gardens with a nice pond and calm atmosphere. I noticed that everyone was happy with this trip. We took plenty of pictures, walked around, and saw some wild animals. At 11 o’clock some of us cooked our barbecue near the pond. At 11:30 we ate lunch in huts near pond. After lunch we had a chit chat, some of us laughed; some was watching the fish and view. I realized that as colleagues, we act closer to each other when we are outside the office. In conclusion, thanks to our superiors who made it possible to have a day trip to this beautiful resort. I hope one day we’re going to have a trip like this again.

10E Friendship Trip

Name: Sivheng Sok Class: 10-E Memories and our past play a big part in our lives. When I look back to the day when my friends and I went on a trip to Siem Reap with our home-room teacher, Jennet, I remember how incredibly fun and amusing it was. I know that 3 days are pretty short, yet it was the best trip that I’ve ever had in my entire life. The days were gloriously sunny, we went to see a lot of ancient temples, and also we went to a gorgeous street in the evenings. The trip really helped us to share our endeavors and our true feelings.

Name: Chanpich Danita Chhim Class: 10-E Febraury 20th, my friends and I arrived in Siem Reap, our eyelids and shoulders so incredibly heavy from the exhaustion. We spent at least 50% of our time dipped in water in the hotel’s swimming pool, playing Uno, having fun and eating pizza by the pool. What did I learn? That my friends are absolute weirdos.

Have you ever wished to go on a trip with your classmates before? Well, I have always wished to have a trip with my friends. On 20.02.2016 I finally got to hang-out with them. The entire trip was absolutely amazing. It will remain in our memories forever. I will never forget the beautiful images I saw and how I felt.

Last month on February 20th, I went to Siem Reap with ten of my friends. It was a short, 3-days and 2-nights trip with my favourite girls in a ravishing hotel – La Residence Blanc D’angkor. We have been waiting for this trip to happen for almost a year; however, our ephemeral plan didn’t happen at all. On the day we departed, we woke up as the first light could be seen so that we wouldn’t be late for our bus. Unfortunately, I managed to beat everyone, including other passengers, to be the last one on the bus which was very ignominious. As soon as the car stopped, we rushed to the hotel which was approximately 20 minutes away from the bus stop in a very packed car, since there were too many of us. We took only half of the day to explore Angkor Wat and about 2-3 hours in one of the famous streets on the very first night. Beside, most of the trip was spent fooling around in the swimming pool and playing with our friends. ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE 41

Khmer New Year or Bon Chol Chhnam Thmei in Khmer Language, is the greatest traditional festival in Cambodia. The celebration lasts for three days and starts on 13th, 14th or 15th of April, depending on the ancient horoscope called Maha Sangkran. This year, 2016, it started on 13th of April. Khmer New Year is celebrated for marking the end of the harvest season when farmers enjoy the fruits of their labour and relax before the rainy season comes. By the way, Zaman always celebrates with a party for all staff to enjoy during the Khmer New Year Festival. This year, the party was celebrated on 9th April at Zaman Kindergarten School. We prepared some food and played some Khmer popular games which we enjoyed together.

What should I watch? Have you ever thought that maybe someday, somewhere, a strange place where you just happen to go, will become your most precious place out of all places? Perhaps a person who you just meet suddenly becomes someone very dear to you? Then you should definitely watch Hotarubi no mori e (To the forest of Firefly lights). To the forest of Firefly lights is a comedy, a slice of life, and a tragic Japanese cartoon. “No matter what, don’t ever touch me.” #Gin. “Are you always going to be here? If I came back here, could we meet again?” #Hotaru This is the story of a six-year-old girl named Hotaru Takegawa who gets lost in a forest inhabited by a mountain spirit. She was found by a human-like entity with a mask covering his face. His name is Gin. He told her that he would disappear if he were to be touched by a human. How? Why? Is what we are asking as an audience, however as a six-year-old kid, she questions what it means to disappear. Gin leads Hotaru out of the forest; warning her to never come back to the forest again or she will never be able to find the way back. What will she do? What exactly is Gin? Is he a mountain spirit or isn’t he? If so then why would he disappear with just a single touch from a human? The friendship they share, the things they have been through, both the fun times and the sad times, and all the moments they spend together as years pass by will move you and your emotions throughout the story. I recommend that teenagers should watch this movie. Not only because you will start to treasure every minute you have, but also because it shows you how to stand up to the obstacles that are thrust in front of you: to stay patient, to appreciate, to love, to care, and many other mixed emotions dwell within the characters and the story line that will bring you to tears.

Water and Sanitation The most common diseases in Cambodia today are related to problems with water and sanitation. In 1979, many people who came from the countryside to Phnom Penh were unused to urban living. It is estimated by UNICEF that rural sanitation coverage in Cambodia is only eight percent, making it the lowest in the region and the second lowest outside of Africa. In the absence of sanitation facilities, most rural dwellers use rice paddies, banana groves, and other water sources to dispose of their own waste—thus polluting the water on which they depend. The nation’s Ministry of Rural Development, backed by many international partners, have attacked this problem with a rural water supply and sanitation initiative. In addition to digging new wells, hundreds of family and school-based latrines have been built within the last few years to provide safe access to sanitation for rural Cambodians. In addition to improving access to water and sanitation facilities, aid organizations have also stepped up efforts to teach young Cambodians about the need for proper hygiene practices to protect them from disease. Studies have shown that the simple practice of washing hands with soap can reduce diarrheal diseases by over 40 percent. As awareness about the connection between clean water, sanitation, and hygiene grows in rural Cambodia, further efforts to protect people against water-related diseases spread by insects are also on the rise. For instance, mosquito screens are being installed on latrine pipes to ensure that the insects breeding

within cannot escape to infect humans. Furthermore, household mosquito nets have also been marketed to protect individuals and reduce the spread of disease. Moreover, enclosed water tanks are being employed to reduce mosquito breeding in stored water, and filtration systems are increasingly used to remove any parasites or microbial from that same water before it is consumed. To conclude, hygiene plays an important role in achieving a healthy life. Practicing hygiene in our life daily maintains health and prevents the spread of diseases. Apart from maintaining a clean environment, it’s important to keep your house and community clean, practice proper hand hygiene, and have good water and sanitation system in place and a system for proper disposal of garbage as well. Apart from the common complaints about stomach ache and headache, I have not encountered major problems or diseases with the students. I usually educate the students about proper hand washing and how important it is to maintaining good health. In addition, to guiding students about proper hygiene, I also advise them about eating clean and healthy foods. In particular, I stress on the importance of including fruits and vegetables in their diet as much as possible as the consumption of fruits and vegetables help boost their immune system and make them strong and healthy. Increasing their water intake as well will help keep them hydrated throughout the day especially during hot season.

Zika Virus Outbreak

Earlier this month, Laos became the latest country to report a local transmission of the Zika virus, joining neighboring countries such as Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia who have each reported at least one Zika-related case since 2010. Thailand has been the worst-hit amongst the lot so far, with nine cases reported since 2012. The World Health Organization (WHO) believes that the Zika virus is more common in Southeast Asia. Southeast Asia’s growing urban centers, tropical climate, and often poor waste management, are factors that increase the risk of a Zika epidemic. The region is also susceptible to bi-annual monsoon seasons that increase breeding sites for the Aedesaegypti mosquito, which is responsible for spreading dengue and chikungunya virus. For now, the WHO classified Thailand and the Phil-

ippines as countries with “sporadic transmission” of the Zika virus, as opposed to most countries in South America and the Caribbean which have seen “increasing or widespread transmission.” Indonesia, Malaysia, and Cambodia have not made the list. A person suspected of being infected with the Zika virus shows symptoms of the virus or has a recent history of travel (e.g. residence or travel to an area where Zika virus is known to be present). Zika virus diagnosis can only be confirmed by laboratory testing for the presence of Zika virus RNA in the blood or other body fluids, such as urine or saliva. As most of us love to travel and visit new places especially during the holidays and school breaks, one should take the basic precautions described below to protect themselves from mosquito bites. People are advised to:

People sick with Zika virus should get plenty of rest, drink enough fluids, and treat pain and fever with common medicines. If symptoms worsen, they should seek medical care and advice. There is currently no vaccine available.

Health is Wealth Young people between the ages of 10 and 19 years – are often thought of as a healthy group. Nevertheless, many adolescents do die prematurely due to accidents, suicide, violence, pregnancy related complications and other illnesses that are either preventable or treatable. Many more suffer chronic ill-health and disability. In addition, many serious diseases in adulthood have their roots in adolescence. For example, tobacco use, sexually transmitted infections including HIV, poor eating and exercise habits, lead to illness or premature death later in life. Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. It moves beyond a focus on individual behaviour towards a wide range of social and environmental

interventions. As one popular adage states, ‘Prevention is much better than a cure,’ let’s make the choice for living a healthy lifestyle and experiencing positive changes in your life. As another wise saying goes, ‘Health is wealth,’ so it’s not too late to start living healthier by changing your lifestyle one day at a time. Taking small and gradual steps purposefully will help motivate you to sustain the change towards achieving better health and a better life. Remember: living a healthy lifestyle is the key to experiencing positive changes in your life. Sources: www.who.int/entity/en/ www.bbc.com/news/health-35441675

On the other hand, ZIS Senior Girls’ Football Team has had a successful season and got only one defeat. However, the team completed the tournament in the 5th place because of unfortunate games. We love soccer, there are many games and tournaments that we have joined but this is our first time playing against public school. We never expected much winning but all our teammates never thought of giving up, we challenged ourselves and tried our best until the end of the game. This experience taught us a lot, so hopefully we can get this experience once again and make sure to try harder to reach the top. On behalf of the basketball team, I would like to say it was a fun experience to be able to play against public schools. This year is our first experience for basketball and I have to say that it is beyond what I expected it to be. We played along side each other and never gave up, we treated everybody like our families to make the game work and it eventually did. We got third place in our tournament and we’re so proud of it, we never thought that we would ever get to stand there at the western stadium for our awards. It was a really fun and challenging experience. I hope we can do it again next year and for sure we’ll come back stronger than ever.
