ZAMAN’S DEDICATION TO CHARITY AND THE COMMUNITY

Pictured here is the handover ceremony of the school donation project organised and sponsored by Zaman International School and the Mekong Chairty in co-operation with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. The charity work was carried out by students, parents, staff and teachers of Zaman. During the school’s charity week students had run campaigns like food sales, concerts and had asked for cash donations to go towards helping and providing improved facilities for needy schools in Cambodia.

CHARITY WEEK: THE FOOD FESTIVAL

During the last week of November in 2016, one of the most exciting events was held. It was the Charity Week. Most of the classes took responsibility for conducting different activities. Some sold food, some hosted games, the rest came up with other forms of entertainment in order to raise funds for charity. At the canteen, it was really crowded because students came to look for exciting foods that had never been sold in the cafeteria before. As for other activities such as movies, an auction and a charity concert, the conference room was always fully packed with students and friends. I had a wonderful experience during the week as it involved teamwork with the same goal: helping those in need. They will be receiving the money raised. I believe that what we consider as a little financial aid is already a great help for others. Chan Pheanuk Mean 12-E

CHARITY WEEK: TEACHERS VS STUDENTS

The ZIS community did a great job in raising funds during the Charity Festival. One of the fantastic activities was a number of football matches that the class teams played against the teachers’ team, paying $15 per team. Thanks to the teachers and to those kids who made a great effort in contributing to the charity week.

CHARITY WEEK: THE AUCTION Zaman International School (ZIS) organizes an annual charity week. Among several events, our third ZIS auction fundraiser was a resounding success. The amount of donations it generated, the vibrant atmosphere it engendered, the unceasing barrage of cheers and bids throughout the event made it a success. Emotions ran high from the very beginning, with students and teachers displaying extraordinary generosity, passion and confidence as purchasers.Since the auction was so much fun and so helpful to the needy, ZIS aims to continue this tradition and ensure that next time, exhibits will be even more inspiring! Thank you, bidders!

CHARITY WEEK: DON’T BLINK FOR A GOOD CAUSE When it comes to charity, we usually think of the traditional way of donating and that is by giving money directly to the beneficiary or to the organizers of a particular fundraising activity. No fun, right? However, my class, 12 A, thought of an exciting way to help the school generate funds for the charity event. We came up with the fantastic idea of creating an alluring event that had never happened in school before. Namely, ‘The Staring Contest’. This is a contest which requires two people to stare at each other on the stage. Participants were informed about the two conditions. First, no blinking of more than three times and second, no smiling.

Therefore, your voices are our dreams. To clarify, all of the funds will be donated to the Zaman International School’s charity committee. Phannyreach Dolin 12-A Kimhour Dy 12-A

Initially, I thought that there would not be enough participants to pursue this. However, the outcome astonished me and it was surprisingly a successful activity. About twenty contestants joined and was cheered on by the audience of over one hundred students and staff members. The level of struggle of each and every competitor was so challenging that two or more of them shed tears due to the ‘blink’ rule. However, this obstacle did not let them down but instead it encouraged them to fight on until there were only three winners left. In addition, the three winners were awarded with special prizes. Interestingly, a student of 10F, Donita Sopheakun, was the champion of the game and she was awarded heartily. Lastly, I really have nothing more to say because I am still shocked in the aftermath of this amazing competition. Furthermore, my classmates, in 12A, and I, are so grateful to everybody who took part in making this occasion a success. Without each and every one of you, this fantastic event would not even have appeared on the charity week schedule.

CHARITY WEEK: THE CONCERT One of the events of Zaman’s charity week was the concert which was performed by nine students from various grade levels and classes. I was one of the students chosen by Ms Sibel, our mentor, to sing alongside the others on the stage. I was extremely nervous and thrilled at the same time to be on the platform singing in front of many teachers and students; yet, the idea of raising money to help people who are in need made me feel grateful and overwhelmed to be a participant of the activity. The event started with a brief introduction from our mentor, who introduced each member of the team to the audience. There were a total of eight songs during the concert and our opening song was Counting Stars. As I was about to begin, the nervousness got the better of me especially when I saw how crowded the room was. Fortuitously, the viewers’ cheers made me loosen up. I eventually overcame the uneasy feeling I had earlier. The whole experience was so much fun that minutes later, I wasn’t even aware that we reached the finale. We ended the activity with the song Khmer Help Khmer. To sum it all up, the concert was enjoyable for us performers and simultaneously entertaining to our audience. It was also beneficial to the charity week program. I was very glad to be part of something so big and charitable. Porphymean Ung 9-E

2016 CHARITY FESTIVAL FEEDBACK Chanbopear Peng 10-E I think that the charity week this year had more interesting activities compared to the last one. Overall, it was a spectacular way to raise money to help others. By participating in these activities, we didn’t only have fun; we also brought joy to the less fortunate. Mr. Kudret Dogan Vice-Principal and Academic Affairs It is about teamwork: doing something with your study partners, classmates and everybody else at school including the staff. Everybody cares about their community: the people living in it most especially the ones in need. To show that concern, the ZIS family came up with various activities to generate funds for its chosen beneficiary. We systematically planned, willingly donated, diligently invited and talked to our friends and relatives; and finally raised a generous amount this year. All the donations were given to people who may not have the chance to see the future which made the Charity Festival a praiseworthy and remarkable affair to everyone. Phech Hoang Ing 10-E “No one has ever become poor from giving”- Anne Frank. On November 26 until December 3, a week of charity was held and I would describe it as an enjoyable, exemplary and unforgettable happening. Compared to the previous year, it had additional gimmicks and money collected from each class. The festival made me appreciate the essence of community service and humanitarian acts. I am looking forward to witnessing further improvements next year.

CHARITY WEEK: THE SPICY NOODLES CHALLENFGE When I first heard that a class organized an eating contest called ‘The Spicy Noodles Challenge’ for the charity week, I was hyped and I couldn’t wait to join. At first, I thought to myself that I was only there to enjoy and not to force myself to devour the bowl of hot food. I guess the enthusiasm of my friend behind me with all her cheering and shouting got me super excited. I made up my mind and I started to gobble everything as fast as I could. I had an adrenaline rush on that moment and one thing led to another. I don’t even remember what happened next. When I was done, I quickly grabbed the water bottle and thirstily chugged the whole thing up. Then I heard my name being announced as the winner of the challenge and as the receiver of the prize (that would be given shortly after the activity). Overall, it was a great experience for me even though I had almost burned my mouth. I do hope that there will be more daring activities like this in the future.

CHARITY WEEK: THE VAINGLORY TOURNAMENT

Joining and volunteering in events such as tournaments help us gain experiences, however, doing this and helping host an event simultaneously was more rewarding than I could have ever imagined, especially when the main purpose was to give back to the community. I felt useful and satisfied considering the fact that I did my very best in aiding my society. I personally enjoyed helping others host the event, it was the best part for me. Halcyon Charity Tournament was held from November 26 to December 3 during the charity week. The events were divided into two categories: the lower ranking and the upper ranking. The games were spectacular as the participants showed off their incredible skills. Furthermore, everything went smoothly thanks to the cooperation from the players. Competitors of the ever-popular Vainglory online game included ZIS students as well as members of the public. The most significant part of these two events were the responses of our audiences, however, despite some negative feedback we received, the cinema was filled with excitement, laughter and cheers. I am very proud of being an instrument of this successful tournament. The fun I experienced during the process was just a consolation. Puthina Keang 12-E

THE NETHERLANDS

History and English Teacher Michelle Konijn gave a speech about her country entitled, ‘The Netherlands and Dutch Culture’ on November 10. She writes of the experience: “When someone asks you to give a presentation about your home country and culture, it starts off sounding fun. That is until you realize that 15 minutes is way too short for a presentation on your home town, let alone your country and culture. What I found most unexpected was how often I had to pace myself because I realized, that many things I find natural and normal, might be confusing for students and colleagues, who have never been to the Netherlands. This was all during my preparation, but what I was most nervous about was whether any students would turn up. However, I am pleased to say I had a good turnout, half the room was full and there were still students walking in after I had started. I moved through my presentation at lightning speed to make sure I could say as much as possible but in the end the bell rang to signal the end. I hope the students enjoyed the presentation as much as I enjoyed preparing it.”

THE AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY FAIR 2016 The speaker on November 11, 2016 for ‘ZIS Talks’ was Teparun Sok. She writes: “During an Australian University Fair held at the Zaman cafeteria last year, I found out about the Young Leaders Program (YLP), a short three-week summer school program at Trinity College, University of Melbourne. Unexpectedly, one of the program organizers offered me a scholarship of the programs for two weeks. I was surprised but excited at the same time because I knew that this was my golden chance to experience Australia’s Number 1 University, the University of Melbourne. I completed the application form, applied for the visa and was ready to make most of this opportunity. I chose Arts Stream for the first week and Biomedicine for the second. The program was full of surprises and delight. There were enlightening lectures and plenty of fantastic activities including rock climbing, Zumba dancing, the ‘Amazing Race’, a Melbourne tour and so on. At first, I was uncomfortable and homesick until I met my new friends. Most importantly, the YLP has helped me develop my leadership skills. I definitely recommend this program to everyone who is interested in experiencing university life in Australia.” 16 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

US UNIVERSITIES: ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND SOME TIPS The first guest speaker on the second week of the 3 in 1 Activity was Adjunct Professor Richard E Beal who works at the State University of New York and is a visiting lecturer at RUPP. He presented facts about the admission requirements of universities in the USA. ZIS students showed keen interest by jotting down notes and asking some questions. They acquired good tips from him. Eventually, they asked for his email address to know more information such as scholarships and so on. It was indeed a helpful presentation.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY SERVICE Monk Venerable Oeun Sam Art, the personal assistant to His Holiness Tep Vong, The Great Supreme Patriarch of Kingdom of Cambodia, the Head Office of Protocol and International Relation of The Secretariat of The Supreme Sangha Council of Kingdom of Cambodia, the Deputy Head office of Admin and Finance of Preah Sihanouk Raja Buddhist University, the president and founder of Life Library Foundation, visited ZIS and discussed with the students the importance of helping the community and making charity a habit.

NEW ZEALAND Mr Dah Lee, the head of the New Zealand Cambodia Association, gave an informative presentation on December 7, 2016 at the Conference Hall. He was born in China but lived in New Zealand since his childhood. ZIS students were really impressed to hear his life experiences in Wellington, where he was raised. Furthermore, he talked about the geographical features, history, education and tourism of New Zealand. To visualize the presentation, he showed the pictures of the beautiful scenery of Queensland and other tourist attractions. As expected, the students were very interested when he gave information about the university admissions and scholarship opportunities offered by the New Zealand Government and some universities. Meanwhile, Mr Lee gave the students some tips on how to apply for a scholarship to universities in NZ. . ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS An interview with Mr Socheat, the general manager for Samsung Electronics in Cambodia. Q: Why did you choose to major in Business? A: It was a no-brainer to study Business back in the old days. Back then, working in this field guaranteed a good salary and I didn’t put much thought into it. However, as time passed, I began to enjoy business as it challenges people who always want more than they already know and have. Q: How were you able to obtain a job at such a big company like Samsung? A: Companies like these are always on the lookout for people who are competitive and ‘hungry’. They want people who are ‘hungry’ for more knowledge and are always ready to fight for their goals. I just grabbed the opportunity as soon as it came towards me. Q: What advice would you give to students who are looking to major in business? A: Like I mentioned in my presentation, it is important to keep your life in balance. You have to learn how to balance between your personal life, your family, your community and also your school life. You should never be stuck in one place and decide what to do. Always keep your mind open to opinions of others when making your decision. Q: What is your opinion of cultural diversity? A: It is one of the most important things. Learn about all types of people and preferences. It varies from one place to another. Always keep yourself updated and you’re well on your way to success. Q: What final words and advice do you have for us? A: Don’t believe what people tell you, not even the things I had to say today. People will go through different experiences. Keep your mind active and only believe what you know is right.

PONDERING THE GAP YEAR Chhenglun Pen, a student in 12E, gave a talk about the aspects to consider during the gap year. A gap year is a period, typically an academic year, taken by a student as a break between high school and university or college education. It’s also known as a sabbatical year. Advantages: - Ample time to be academically and socially prepared - Independence - Self-actualization - Ample time to earn money for college - A chance to experience life before starting university Disadvantages: - May be costly (as it encourages travel and gap year programmes) - Changes to one’s course or one’s student finance package during the year off may apply - One’s social life may be at risk when friends are attending universities - Tendency to forget a lot in a year that would be useful to one’s course - Possibility of being idle during the gap year which isn’t good for the CV

a movement to recognize that an addiction to selfies could actually be related to a mental disorder? It’s a way of saying that taking three selfies a day is nuts; posting seven selfies on any social media is dire.

Selfie is a global phenomenon which millenials are obsessed about. They take selfies more than usual: posting a photo of them with their lunch on Instagram before eating, Tweeting how haggard they look after exams. Crazy enough, we also have the term duck face related to this phenomenon. It’s when you take a selfie with an exaggerated pout to contour your lips. Cynical about this? Check someone’s Facebook timeline and observe. I bet a dollar on it. Surprisingly, it’s a social trend that even middle-aged people and oldies do. Take The Kardashians for example especially Kim Kardashian-West. If there would be a Global Awards for Selfies and Duck Faces, she would go home a victor.

Lately, APA actually confirmed that taking selfies is a mental disorder, and came up with the name, ‘selfitis’ which means, the obsessive compulsive desire to take photos of one’s self and post them on social media as a way to make up for the lack of self-esteem and to fill a gap in intimacy (which I am not completely shocked about). Moreover, APA categorized it into three levels: borderline, acute and chronic. It sounds surreal but think logically. Why would someone take ample time taking pictures of himself, figuring his good (facial) angle, editing these photos and posting them on the internet? Some psychologists claim that it is related to narcissistic personality disorder – a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admi-

To catch up, companies even invented the selfie stick which enables a person to take a photo of themselves in a more convenient way using an adjustable metal stick. There’s more! FUN FACTS: SOUTH KOREA Did you know that? 1.

Each section of the flag of South Korea, also known as Taegukki, has a meaning? Some people might wonder why there are so many black lines with each of them referred to as a trigram. In fact, each trigram (kwae) denotes one of the four classical elements: heaven, fire, water, earth.

On the other hand, the flag has a white with red and blue yin-yang symbol in the center. White is a traditional Korean colour and represents peace and purity. The blue section represents the negative cosmic forces of the yin while the red symbolizes the opposite positive forces of the yang.

2.

Many people say that the Korean language (Hangul) is one of the most scientific languages in the world. There are several reasons that can prove this. In its classical and modern forms combined, the alphabet has 19 consonants and 21 vowel letters. There is an interesting story about how Hangul was created. In the past, the Korean people were forced to labour under the primitive and poorly adapted Chinese characters (Hanja), so only elite classes got to learn them by spending long amounts of time memorizing them. So the king, Sejong the Great, created Hunminjungeaum to make sure that every one in his country knew how to speak and write it well, and the meaning of Hunminjungeaum is “the proper sound for the education of the people”.

3.

‘Hanbok’ are the Korean traditional clothes that were made over five thousand years ago containing the traditional pattern of South Korea. It is often characterized by vibrant colours and simple lines without pockets. Hanbok is mostly made of silk. In summer, people wear hanbok that is made with ramie or hemp and in winter, it is made with brocade or satin. So by changing the types of fabric, people were able to wear different types of clothing throughout the year without having problems with seasons.

4.

Korea has five grand palaces and Genykokgung is the largest one among the five and is where the king lived. It was built in 1395. In the past, the palace was destroyed by war and abandoned for a few centuries but in the early 20th century it was destroyed by the Japanese. However, the government rebuilt the palace again and opened the palace for Korean citizens and tourists to appreciate the beautiful building.

THE HAUNTED SHIP In 1872, the Mary Celeste departed from New York with my father as its captain. My mother and I decided to come along because we wanted to explore Italy as a family, along with eight other crew members. It was finally the day of the trip, the smile on everyone’s face as we waved goodbye made me even more excited about it. We went over all the supplies on our list that we needed to bring with us one more time just to make sure. My calculations stated that our food supply was more than enough for this entire trip. Everyone was onboard and everything was ready. The next thing I knew, it was time to set sail. It was very refreshing to feel the calm and warm breeze but there was also an uncomforting sulfuric smell and a pinch of green to the briny air. My mother often experienced mild seasickness, but I rarely did. We spent days and nights on the sea which was a lot of getting-used-to, but we eventually got the hang of things. Soon enough days turned to weeks, and weeks turned to months. I couldn’t keep track of time anymore, but luckily my father recorded every detail in his logbook as a great captain would usually do. November 24 was the day I would never forget. The sun was shining brightly on that morning but somehow, I was feeling a slight shiver down my spine upon waking up. It was almost noon and when it seemed like I was finally calming myself down, the sudden pressure hit me all at once. It was the most intense thing I have ever experienced outdoors. The air got colder, almost unbreathable, and I felt very uncomfortable. “Crystals… ice crystals…” I thought to myself as they started forming on the water’s surface. The area started to get foggy. As it got thicker and thicker, I started to see a shadow. I couldn’t believe my eyes, but the figure looked like a woman with a long hair. I tried to look harder but the longer I looked, the more scared I got. I didn’t know why no one else seemed to see the shadow. It was only me who did. She slowly moved her arms towards one of the crew members, ice crystals formed on his feet, spreading upwards until he was completely frozen. She then closed her palms, and the ice shattered completely without leaving a single trace behind. I was speechless. I couldn’t feel my legs anymore and my hands were shaking. My heart was pounding so hard, I felt like it could burst out any second. The next victim was me. I was too shocked to even have any thoughts at that moment. My mother quickly appeared in front of me, spreading out her arms to shield me. Before I knew it, she was completely shattered. My heart skipped a beat and I lost all consciousness. I woke up finding myself on the beach of a deserted island. Fortunately, my father was with me, and he told me everything. Everyone else tried to escape. Some got thrashed, some froze to death, and others sank into the ocean. Only one of the crew members survived. They swam to the nearest piece of land they could spot. That story was long, long ago. It still surprises me how much I remember about that trip. My father passed away a few years back because of a disease, and the former crew member who also survived passed away not too long ago due to an accident. No one else has discovered this island yet. It gets awfully lonely sometimes. 22 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

THE PUTRID EXPERIMENT OF THE 12TH GRADERS Some time in November, some of you must have noticed the mild sweet, yet obnoxious smell coming from the Chemistry lab. You might have even thought that we were operating a brewery at the lab. Kidding aside, we were actually just mastering one type of fermentation. Apparently, we (12th graders) were preparing ourselves for our Chemistry lab exam by doing enough trials to avoid any failure on exam day and to ensure more than just a passing grade. We were divided into groups and given different assignments relating to organic chemistry, specifically alcohol. They were: • • • • • •

Fermentation of ethanol Dehydration of ethanol to ethene Oxidation of carboxylic acid from alcohol Oxidation of aldehyde from alcohol Confirmatory test for aldehydes and ketones Reaction between sodium and alcohol

As you can see, alcohol is the most crucial component for this entire lab exam, and the alcohol assigned was ethanol. We weren’t allowed to use the pure ethanol found in the lab storeroom, but we were supposed to produce it ourselves. Production of ethanol is just simply fermenting sugar with the help of yeast. This is how it works. Sugar is dissolved in water in a container, and a bit of yeast is added to the sugar solution, which is then sealed and left to sit for two to three days. Yeast, on the other hand, is a type of fungi. It breaks down the sugar and releases ethanol and carbon dioxide. The challenging part of this kind of fermentation is the extraction of ethanol when it’s ready. If we aren’t careful, the ethanol might be exposed to oxygen in the air for a little longer than it should be, and it’ll be oxidized into ethanoic acid, which is 200% the opposite of what is needed. As you might have guessed, the putrid smell coming from the Chemistry lab the whole time was the combination of ethanol and ethanoic acids. During the earlier trials, each group brought their materials and tried to ferment ethanol, but the outcomes turned into a fiasco. All previous attempts produced ethanoic acid instead of ethanol. After many frustrating disasters, our class, 12E, came to the conclusion of working together just to have a positive result and sharing the final product. When many great minds work together as a team, all the obstacles would definitely be overcome. The ethanol, indeed, was successfully fermented; but it had to be distilled to remove the impurities and to get an almost pure ethanol, which can be used for our lab work. It was a long process. It would take at least half an hour to make at least three drops of pure ethanol. However, with the perseverance and painstaking effort of my colleagues, we managed to produce sufficient ethanol for everyone. Having completed half the work, the rest of the lab work went smoothly for everyone; and we all ended up receiving very satisfying marks on our final assessment. Lesson learnt: teamwork is the miraculous shortcut to possibly everything impossible. I’d also like to show my gratitude to our lovely Chemistry teacher, Ms Zainab Ojoro, who assigned us this educational task and helped us along the way.

MY PASSION, ART My dear friends, I’ve written a short and interesting story about a part of my life. Art is everything to me: my passion, my life. When I was five years old, I started attending art competitions.

and learning from my mistakes because every artist dips her brush into her own soul and paints her own nature into her painting.” That’s what I needed to accept by practising art.

I reminisced that my first experience in competing was at Zaman Primary School back in 2010. It was an amazing experience. From then, I started to challenge myself by participating in art contests at my school.

2016: My mother’s dream of going to China was fulfilled. My sister and I joined a competition in China so we had to be accompanied by her. It was freezing cold out there and every night, I spent my free time coloring.

2013: I started to join worldwide competitions. I found out about an event which was huge and prestigious! Over 400 contenders joined.

Finally, the anticipated day had arrived. My friends, family, and teachers hoped that I could at least get the fourth place. I gave all my best, and I was the third runner-up of over 600 competitors around the world! It was unbelievable, I mean it was magical. They called me up to the stage and I was holding a Cambodian flag. I just felt elated and I couldn’t stop smiling even to unfamiliar people at the event.

The center’s name is Global Art. Its mission is to successfully accomplish nurturing young minds to be imaginative, creative and innovative; unlocking their creative potentials; and enriching their lives. I excitedly grabbed this opportunity. I joined the competition and to my surprise, it was harder than I expected. The experience didn’t shatter me. I didn’t accept defeat; instead, I enrolled at Global Art Toul Kork Center. I did all my best to become the best. I learned that art is all about practice. An artist cannot fail. It is a success just to be one. 2014: In the national competition, I got the Best of Best Trophy while my younger sister was awarded the Champion’s Trophy in the Philippines, a beautiful country if I may say so. We both competed in Manila and won the ‘Excellence’ trophies. Both my parents were very proud of these achievements and that’s when I realized that I had to work even harder.

Touching the trophy gave me the sense of empowerment. The trophy, however, wasn’t the only rewarding thing. It was also knowing that all my hard work didn’t go to waste. Moreover, it was also gratifying to represent Cambodia. Present day: I’m still far from finishing my journey. My life is all about art and my last time doing it had been such a fulfilment. I will continue my journey hand in hand with the people whom I love. I did my best to fulfil my dreams, I hope you do, too. “Good things come to those who BELIEVE, better things come to those who are PATIENT and the best things come to those who Don’t Give Up!”

2015: I won the championship in the national competition! Unfortunately, I received the consolation medal during the international competition. I cried in my room asking myself why I only got the lowest medal. Moments later, I composed myself and uttered, “There is no use crying, I must keep trying 24 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

THE SIEM REAP TOUR (12-E: 16TH GENERATION) This was our first class outing ever! We spent three fantastic days and two enjoyable nights together. Everyone was just so excited on the way to Siem Reap (SR). The trip started off with a magnificent sunset. Next, we got to see the largest historical play at the cultural village and the most famous Khmer temple, Angkor Wat, which is one of SR’s landmarks that attracts a large number of tourists. Sadly, it was a short voyage but every precious minute we had was spent wisely and productively. Our dream to travel together as a class was something that has been planned for so long and has only been fulfilled now. It’s sad because this is our last year together in ZIS which means we won’t be able to be on an amazing trip together just like this one again. The SR tour meant a lot to us. We will keep these wonderful memories and cherish this unforgettable experience forever. Sokunmerdey Dara 12-E

WHAT SHOULD I WATCH? Kimi No Na Wa also known as, Your Name is, in a word, a journey. A journey to what will surely be the future of cinematography, as well as a journey on a grand roller coaster of emotions. Technically speaking, the omission of labeling the film a masterpiece is probably an insult given that everything made by Makoto Shinkai is a work of art. On the other hand, among silts there are golds; among golds, there are diamonds. This movie is one of the diamonds that shine way brighter than others. Mitsuha and Taki, both in high school, wake up one day and realize that they’ve switched bodies. It is absolute mayhem but they both figure out a way to live normal lives despite their bizarre situation. Eventually, they come up with an idea to communicate through paper notes and phone memos.

+++ “Mitsuha, Mitsuha, Mitsuha. Your name is Mitsuha. Your name is-…..what is your name?” muttered Taki. +++ As time passes, they get accustomed to playing their new roles and start to intervene with each other’s personal lives. Eventually, they drift apart and lost contact with each other. Taki goes through a great length of trouble just to see Mitsuha again but to no avail; until he seeks out the sake (rice wine) she’d been making. Things start to change after that…..

The film is truly remarkable. Its inception can’t truly be discussed briefly. It contains complexity beyond what I thought was possible while it maintains a fun and relatable narrative. The story is full of foreshadowing, it drags you into a wild stream of emotions like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. It has layers of metanarrative and copious amounts of immersive animation that will glue you to your seat like a blinking tear fountain. I should probably stop talking about this, not because I want to; but I genuinely can’t spoil the film for you. This is a MUST-SEE movie on your list. Borey Sok 11-F

OUR CAMPING ADVENTURE AT KIRIROM Rathanak Sambo 7-A The trip to Kirirom was fun, fun, fun. It was awesome because I got to go camping with my classmates and teachers. The weather was pretty cold and we enjoyed it.We all had good time because we got to do many activities there such as cycling, enjoying a barbecue, playing soccer, playing bubble run and so on. We all hope to experience this for a second time with Zaman High School. Tararith Kaing 7-A Hi my name is Tararith Kaing. I’m in grade 7A and last Saturday, we went to Kirirom to experience camping. The view there was majestic. Everybody’s eyes were satiated. Finally, the best part was when we had a barbecue and it was also the hardest part because it was raining. It was difficult to find dry twigs to light the fire with. On the other hand, there was tons of stuff to do but we chose swimming and cycling. I really wish I could go there again.

Several parents came and they were very eager to talk and listen to the teachers. The teachers scrupulously reported their child’s performance and behaviour in school. They also showed their students’ score on each activity. It was a productive and satisfying meeting. We hope that more parents will be encouraged to join the PTM next time. DAYS WELL-SPENT AT THE DORMITORY It’s hard to deny that staying at another house changes you. Even though it was only for four nights at the dorm, a different ‘you’ emerges. I surely did miss my cozy bed and welcoming home at first, but hey, it was worth it. Not only did I get to experience different types of situations but I also got to spend more ‘dorm time’. I also had the luxury to spend more time with my friends. The were Panha, Lever, Sonyn and Kateka, in case you’re wondering. Well, for the first few hours after arriving at the dormitory, we literally got everything messed up: not knowing what to do and where to go. Fortunately, we got some help from Pretty who’s also staying in the dorm. I have to admit that we had a lot fun there, me and my crew did everything together. Almost… we shared secrets, played games, sang songs, danced to the music, cooked food, washed dishes and even brushed our teeth together. Trust me, it was the most well-spent week of my entire life.

IN PRIMARY THEN, IN HIGH SCHOOL NOW I enjoy being in high school; it is a great experience for me. The environment, the lessons, friends and everything else is refreshing. Comparing it to my primary years, it is somehow different. In primary, there are not many different types of rooms and it is less strict. Moreover, we tend to hang out with our own cliques while in primary, we could just make friends with anybody we saw on the campus. The environment is also different, use of space and so on. Activities in high school are less supervised, too. It makes us become independent and responsible. The cafeteria and its service on the other hand is better than in primary school but outdoor space is doubled in the high school campus with bigger football and basketball fields. My new school’s green playground also gives a relaxing vibe. It is enticing to everyone’s eyes. Ngounheng Pen 7-A

It was supported by the School Board and led by Mr Meas Phirun, a history teacher for grade 12, as well as by some other teachers who joined the trip. The purpose of the trip was to allow the students to learn about some historical sites relating to their content of studies in the national curriculum for grade 12 and to know the locations of cities and achievements of the people in the past. Additionally, the teachers showed the students Catholic churches, Islamic mosque and Buddhist temples that are related to the history of the country. This also enabled students to know and learn about the diversity of Cambodia, its architectural styles, religious practices, structures and the reasons why such buildings were constructed in certain places. The trip was very beneficial to the students and was ideal for the academic programme for grade 12.

MY INDOOR WALL CLIMBING EXPERIENCE On Saturday, December 7 I went on a trip with a bunch of other people. It was surprising to see a van full of people attending because I thought it was just me and a few other friends. It turned out I was wrong. Having more people with you really changes the mood; it was a crazy bus ride. Once we got there, instructions were given to us and we followed. Of course, going with friends was what made it most fun, but the climbing was a unique experience in itself. It was thrilling and every moment was filled with excitement. Reaching the top and ringing the bell felt like ecstasy flowing in us. It’s just joyful and we felt like we’d accomplished something amazing. There were no accidents that transpired, so everything was wonderful. Everything, from the ride going until the ride coming back, was amazing and it’s just so heartwarming to make friends with people who you’ve never known before through such a trip. And overall I’d say everybody who went would agree with me when I say I want to go back there with everyone again. Borey Sok 11-F

THE SIXTH ANNUAL HUMAN RIGHTS SOCCER TOURNAMENT The U-15 girls’ football team of ZIS has successfully participated in the Sixth Annual Human Rights Soccer Tournament which was held on Saturday, December 10 at Emperial Sports Club, Phnom Penh. We got the second place in this sports event. We would like to show our appreciation to our girls for this outstanding performance despite having only three training sessions to practise. In those sessions, they really worked hard to prepare themselves physically and mentally. As a result, they still gave their very best during the tournament even with an unfavourable weather conditions. The weather couldn’t dampen their enthusiasm and their performance improved match by match. U-15 FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT, THAILAND

The ‘U-15’ tournament in Thailand was held between November 24 and 29. Teams from twelve different countries participated in the tournament and Cambodia came third. It was an honorable moment for all who represented the country. Additionally, it was an incredible experience for coaches and students. Students made many friends from different countries. When we landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, we got a hearty welcome from the host country. They catered for our needs in every way imaginable. We greatly appreciated their hospitality. Moreover, Thai people are cheerful and they always have smiling faces.

To sum up, being a part of the tournament was a wonderful experience. The emotions left behind were inexpressible. You could see so many qualities in action such as friendship, fairplay, and modesty. It was one of the best organized tournaments and trips we have ever experienced. We are looking forward to the next tournament now. We are grateful to Zaman International School for allowing students to participate in such competitions and for giving them the chance to show off their talents. Also, we again give our thanks to Thailand and Pan-Asia International School for making this event go ahead so successfully.

The ‘U-15’ tournament is organized by Pan-Asia International School, a private school in Bangkok. They had put much preparation into making the event happen. We send our thanks for their hard-work, well-organized program and zealous and consistent efforts for ensuring things went smoothly throughout the tournament. Or students deserved to win a trophy. They tried their best from the beginning to the end. In every match, they performed better than expected. However, it depends on luck sometimes. Although we could not make it to the final, we gave our best to earn the award for ‘third place winner’ of the tournament. We are proud of them because in all matches they showed great sportsmanship and fair play which was very important as they were representing their country. Furthermore, students made friends who were also participants of the tournament and who were from other teams and different countries. 44 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

Rathanak Sambo 7-A

Sovinhou Ung 9-B

I was totally excited about Thailand but when I arrived, I suddenly started to feel anxious. We were obviously one of the shortest and smallest among the other teams. Despite our injuries, we managed to do well enough to gain third place. To our coach, thank you for your relentless encouragement and support. To Zaman International School and Cambodia, I hope you are proud of what we accomplished. Sovannrothanak Pich 10-B It was my first time participating in a tournament and I had mixed emotions about it. I was eager for the match to start, but I was also very nervous. First day was a rest day. We had our first match on the second day and started well by winning two out of three games. Sadly, we lost during the semi-finals but still got third place in the end. Our captain, Rotanak, also bagged his first golden boot for our country. I feel proud of what I contributed in the tournament and if there’s an opportunity for me to join again then count me in!

Before the tournament started, I was a little nervous because it was my first time playing against other countries in a big tournament like this one. When we arrived in Thailand, we had to rest first to prepare our minds and bodies. On our second day, the tournament started. We played three matches during the day and won two. We were still qualified for the semi-finals though. The third day was judgment day. It was against Laos and we lost. It meant that we were only to compete for third place. At the end, we got third which was still a victory for us. We are glad that we were given this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the tournament in Thailand, and we are looking forward to participating and playing in the tournament next year.

WE, THE CHIMERAS Borey Sok 11-F Throughout the entire basketball season, everyone worked hard. All the effort that was put in – none of it went to waste. We are a strong team, the bond between us is unspeakable. Even if the basketball season is over, we’ve still got Nationals to go to. We train twice a week preparing for it. We will unite as a team on the court once more. Speaking on behalf of everyone, I’d say we all love basketball a lot, and we love our team just as much. It’s very clear through the determination on everyone’s faces. We all know what our goal is and we’re all working hard in order to achieve that. Every single moment spent with my teammates was magical in a way of its own. The team we pulled together went through a lot of hardship, but through everything that transpired, we’ve managed to conquer it all. Practice makes perfect as many would say, and I have to agree with that. This isn’t our last farewell my fellow teammates, I hope we all become stronger to overcome our weaknesses before we play with each other again. Until then, I wish you the best of luck.

Huang Hao Taing 12-A Swish, swoosh! These are the sounds you probably hear when you step foot on the basketball court. Apparently, basketball hasn’t been a popular sport in Zaman until recent times. Lately, there are students seen scattered in the basketball court every break time. As for me personally, being a part of the school’s basketball team has been a delightful experience throughout my high school years. I get to work with students from various grades and play with them as a team. We improve our skills, master teamwork and so much more. What makes the basketball team more intriguing is that every week, there’s a basketball competition against another school. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. This is just part of the game. Anyhow, this is my last year in Zaman. Hence, I sincerely hope that there will be more newbies this season. Cheers to that! 46 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

After the exhausting event, we treated ourselves and went for a walk around the street market. I have never participated in anything quite like this. It was a great first experience.
