To mark this milestone, we report on the visit to Prime Minister, Samdech Hun Sen, by our GENIUS Olympiad winners. We are of the opinion that this privilege inspired our students and set a great example for many more students of Zaman. Paying A Visit To Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen

2015 Winners Winners of the Genius Olympiad met with Cambodian Prime Minister, Samdech Hun Sen. During the visit, The Prime Minister conveyed his appreciation to Zaman International School. Samdech Hun Sen thanked the school and the Principal for all the hard work which is done here in order to bring such great international achievements and opportunities to Cambodian students. The Prime Minister gave cash prizes to the students who won Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals. In the spirit of kindness and fairness, he also invited the previous winners of the Olympiad to join them and receive their prizes. The Prime Minister was very humble and thoughtful throughout the visit as he ensured all the students were seated with him at the table. He also asked the students to remain seated while talking to him rather than standing to him out of respect. Samdech Hun Sen spent a large amount of time talking to each winner, getting to know them personally. He was interested to know about each of them, their projects, their studies, and their plans for the future. He offered the students lots of great advice and expressed his hopes of helping them achieve their goals. He also stated the importance of gaining an international education and international achievements.

I did not think that I would become the Prime Minister. When I was studying, I slept in pagodas. Before the civil war, I was dreaming of becoming a pilot. During the war, however, we were attacked my military planes. The country was bombed. He added, “I never thought I would end up Prime Minister. Nobody knows what they will become in the future. All you can do is work hard and be determined”. It was clear from the Prime Minister’s words of advice and support that he is very proud of these students’ successes. Therefore his government generously rewarded them with following prizes. GENIUS Gold, Silver and Bronze medallists received, 3000, 2000 and 1000 USD respectively. Samdech Hun Sen ended the visit with a small tour of the ministry buildings which showed the students an amazing example of Cambodian architecture. The Prime Minister mentioned that Cambodian architecture is an impressive feat which can serve as inspiration for the Cambodian people. He stated, “we built Angkor Wat; we can succeed internationally too”. Overall, the visit was inspiring and emotional. Many students were filled with awe at the words of their Prime Minister, his brilliant advice, and his vision for the Cambodia of tomorrow.

The Prime Minister also shared inspiring stories from his own life which proved to be very poignant and had a powerful effect on the students. Samdech Hun Sen shared, “you are really lucky. APT JSO 2015 THREE STUDENTS OF ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL REPRESENTED CAMBODIA AT APT JSO 2015 (ASEAN+3 JUNIOR SCIENCE ODYSSEY) IN INDONESIA.

VANNARA LIM

SARAK VIKOMA NGOR

2015 is a year full of inspiration, excitement, happiness, and fright. I have to carry out many things. I have put all of my energy in to studying harder because, at the end of the year, I have to take the grade 9 national government exam. Before the exam, I received news from the school that I had been chosen to represent Cambodia and to compete against other countries in Indonesia where I would present my environmental project. I did not think that I would be able to put myself through this tough challenge, as I had never experienced anything like this before. At that time, I think I felt a lot of pressure; my potential and confidence seemed at a loss. On 15th August, I joined SIMOC competition in Singapore with 12 different countries and I did not expect to get any medals at this competition. I was just thinking of relaxing and relieving some stresses after the Khmer Government exam. This was my first experience of an international Maths competition, and luckily, I got an honorable mention, which means I was only 4 or 5 points away from a bronze medal. Because of those achievements, I regained back my energy for the next mission. Only one week left until the competition comes around. Time went fast for us as a Cambodian team; Kimsan, Vannara, and me. We just knew the main title and aim of the competition. The competition is APT JSO, Asean Plus Three Junior Science Odyssey, and it’s the 4th time this event was held. The 1st time was held in Korea, 2nd time in Brunei, 3rd time in Thailand, and 4th time is in Indonesia. The theme is about ‘Biodiversity towards Innovative, Smart & Green Society’, and the sub-theme is about ‘native plants’. Together with Teacher Mustafa Ozgur, our supervisor, we kept in touch with each other. We reviewed and practiced many lab assessment skills that had to be ready on time. I had no rest in that days, trying to get all the research of our

country’s native plants completed, in order to get the best information and to share our culture and traditions with thirteen other countries. We burned up our energy and finally we got the right things done on time. In twenty-four mornings, we would be taking off for Indonesia. When we arrived, it was late evening because of the 3-hour transit in Singapore. We had dinner together with all other 89 participants. We tried to understand each other, to make a connection, and start a friendship. On the first day, a welcome speech from the Ministers was given in the morning and a poster presentation was held in the afternoon. We presented Rumdul flowers and a palm tree, which are Cambodia’s native plants, to all judges. All of the judges were surprised at our presentation because they had never heard about Rumdul flowers before, and we brought a palm hat and kroma as a souvenir for them and many of our new friends. On the second day, we went to the big support vessel in Indonesia, Baruna Jaya, to get some experience and listen to some lectures. We really enjoyed seeing how mariner life works. The third day was the most pressuring and tiring of the days because we had to take a lab assessment in four subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Innovation skill. This assessment took almost the full day. In the nighttime, there was a culture night in order to show the traditional clothes and songs of all 13 countries that had attended the competition.

I look forward to participating in the next comOn our fourth and last day there, everything in Indonesia seemed similar to Cambodia. Our closing petition to win another Gold medal for my nation, ceremony was held in BBPT Auditorium; I felt glad school, and my family. that we did our best and made it this far but we felt a bit hopeless after seeing a lot of countries going up to the stage. We sat down quietly and gently lisACADEMIC tened to the announcements, hoping and wishing for a chance to win a medal. The ceremony was Sarakvikoma NGOR nearly over when they finally announced our coun10A Student try’s name. Cambodia received the gold medal from Innovation Lab Assessment Skill. I paused for a second and waited for the MC to repeat it; at that time, I felt alive and surprised for my team and myself. We had tried so hard over the 3 days together and we came back with a good result, winning gold medals for our country, school, family, and ourselves. We really appreciate all the work that had been done in order to allow us to participate in this contest. We want to thank, His Excellency, Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Education, Youth and Sport, the Principal and staff of Zaman International School, our parents who gave us permission to have the experience of competing with other countries, and Teacher Mustafa Ozgur for taking care of us during this memorable time.

National Examination Reform The Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport (MoEYS) have reformed their examination policy and examination content based on the personal needs of each Cambodian citizen and the needs of Cambodia’s future. MoEYS have devised that Cambodia needs different types of students to enhance the future of Cambodia and have therefore created two different examination groups. These two groups are based highly on intelligence and a student will pick only one exam programme based on their abilities and their own personal future goals. Students can choose from the Science examination set and the Social Science examination set. Once students have made their choice, they are helped, guided, and tutored for their exam by specialist teachers and the school principal. This year, there were 150 examination centers, 3,427 examination rooms, 84,930 registered students, 83,325 students taking the exam, 1,605 (1.89%) students absent. Students must demonstrate knowledge in seven subjects which differ for each group (Science group or social science group). They cannot be absent for even one subject otherwise they will fail. The list below shows the examination subjects and durations for each programme: Science Subjects

I was relieved and a little lost after seeing my result. Not that I ever expected to get an A, but it seemed unpredictable. All of the hard work I put in definitely paid off because I knew I would have regretted not studying hard enough. So everyone must have a desire to learn and to give yourself opportunities to prove that you can do it. Believe that you will pass no matter what. Think of the exam as a challenge that you will overcome. Stop doing many of the other things that you normally do. Then start studying - HARD !!!

Zaman Charity in Prey Veng Province As the School Charity Week came to an end, a total of over $9000 - has been collected from parents, students, and staff. The school decided to donate this money to three different schools in Prey Veng. The money repainted the library, supplied some books to start a library, built a water-well, and built toilets for each school. In July, we went to these schools to join the opening ceremony with Zaman Alumni Association. The trip started in the early morning at 6:00am. Mr.Cihan, with some students, set out on the trip, happily. While travelling, some students on the bus talked, some sang songs, and some slept until we arrived. We arrived at the school around 10:00am. All of us got off

the bus and went on a tour of the school to see all of the all improvements the money had provided the school with which made us really happy. More than that we were much happier to see the students’ smiles at having been given the resources we take for granted. After that, we went to the two other schools we had donated money to and saw what had been accomplished with it and the happiness it had brought. This really was an unforgettable trip which made me appreciate all that we have and all that we take for granted.

Teachers’ Day Another school year is successfully underway and another set of attentive students are ready to learn and obtain as much as possible from their teachers. Giving everything you have to your students; your time, your energy, your knowledge, your personality, and even your humour, can sometimes take its toll. October 5th celebrates International Teacher's Day. I have worked in schools in different countries around the world, yet here at Zaman is the only place I have seen this day acknowledge. Coming to work on Teacher's Day, I was presented with flowers, chocolates, and cards, not just from the students I teach, but from all students who just wanted to thank teachers in general. Later on, the school organised a ceremony with cake and gifts for the teachers. Students came and read out stories and performed songs for the teachers. If you had entered the conference hall on Teacher's Day, you would have seen all the teachers and staff, chilled and happy, stealing precious and relaxed moments with their co-workers. Sometimes being a teacher can be stressful. At a school such as Zaman, however, where both students and directors appreciate what you do and help you take a little rest from the everyday worries, really helps to make your life easier and less hectic. Having some time to relax and laugh with my fellow teachers is the best gift I could have possibly received for Teacher's Day.

Staff Outing: As a great send off for the end of the academic year, the entire ZAMAN team enjoyed an exhilarating and truly magical day on our school boat outing. Departing from the riverside at around 1:00pm, we were met by a charming, authentic river cabin cruiser, impressively designed and eloquently furnished. The weather was perfect and views all the way along were stunning. Indeed, even local staff who knew the area extremely well savored the opportunity to see the River Bassac from a different angle. Comfortably seated, gently sipping our cool beverages, and listening to soothing music everyone was wonderfully relaxed and fully engaged with the passing countryside. At around 1:30 we delved into a

tasty luncheon of kebabs accompanied by an assortment of tossed salad with freshly baked bread. Photo sessions, lively conversations and staff playfulness characterized this incredibly fun day. On our return, spirits reached new highs when local staff, foreign teachers and administrators alike began bopping and jiving to lively tunes. A multi – cultural display of Turkish, Cambodian and European dance moves burst out onto the deck of the boat with laughter and cheer adding to the festivities. When emotions had calmed from all the excitement, staff members gave a passionate speech to thank the Principal for such a memorable and engaging day, requesting that the same event be scheduled for next year. I know I speak for everyone when I say, “I hope so!”

ZAMAN STAFF BOAT CRUISE

M

ost of Zaman secondary school employees thought of the question, “What’s for lunch today?” which is answered daily by the menu served in staff canteen. It’s one of the staff benefits that lunch is served daily in the canteen between 11:30 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. At the of beginning week, Monday (June 15, 2015) which also marks the start of the Zaman secondary students final examinations, Mr. Muhtor, the academic vice principal, sent an email which says that there will be no food served at the canteen on June 15, Monday. I wondered where would the employees eat? After a little while, another email came informing us that the school administrators arranged a boat lunch cruise for all employees. We were expected to assemble at 12:00 noon at the building entrance; school buses would take us to the riverside. Exactly 12:10 pm we left the school and moved towards Street 1 (Preah Sisowath Quay) in Wat Phnom Commune, Daun Penh District. Excitedly, everyone hopped on the boat and at around 12:30 the boat cruise started. This was my first time to have lunch while in a cruise with Zaman staff. Excitement could be seen in every-

one’s faces while enjoying the cold air breeze. Lunch was served around 12:45 then Khmer traditional dances were participated by most Khmer staff and other employees. There was so much fun; it was an excellent way to get away from usual school paper works and a hood form of relaxation while enjoying the food and the Mekong River. The boat cruise typically takes about 2 hours and runs up the Tonle Sap River along the central riverfront area providing a photographic view of the Royal Palace and many more. The cruise ended with a simple word from the Khmer vice Principal Mr.Phit Kiev. He mentioned that may there be another gathering such as this for all employees to build good relationships. As an employee of Zaman Secondary school I am overwhelmed that Zaman administrators were kind enough to have organized an event like this. I truly believed that surprised lunch like this will not only provide a relaxation but a chance to cultivate fellowship among colleagues. It was such a fun experience to end the school academic school year.

Visit to Prek Bong Kong Pagoda

On Saturday morning, 10th October, Zaman International School organized an activity for the staff and students, together with the Principal and vice principals, to visit the pagoda during Pchum Ben day in Kandal Province. This is time that the Principal put aside in order to create a stronger connection with the staff and also with our country. It was my pleasure that I, as a student, could join this activity with my best friends, Yuth and Kiry, plus four other students from grade 10 and four students from grade 12. My best friends and I brought some snacks, like noodles, rice, water and beverages, such as coke and fruit juice, as offering to the monks at the pagoda. Some of the Khmer teachers also brought some essential snacks and donated money to the monks who were trying hard to celebrate Pchum Ben in their pagoda. On the way back to school, we stopped at many places in the village. We visited a

Khmer silk village which produces 100% silk products and Cambodia’s traditional Royal house. We really enjoyed doing this activity together. We took a ride on a ferry to view the Mekong River, drank coconut juice, and showed Cambodia’s traditions and culture to foreign teachers, as well as our Principal. In addition, we would like to thank our Khmer Teacher who helped to guide us on our way to the pagoda during our activities. I wish we could organise this kind of activity again and again, in order to make the relationships between Khmer Teachers and Foreign teachers stronger. We hope that next time this type of activity is arranged, there will be more teachers and students to join so that it will be more fun and enjoyable.

Mr. Phit Kiev Vice-Principal The fifteenth day of the tenth month of the Khmer calendar marks the Pchum Ben Festival. This is a time when the spirits of dead ancestors walk the Earth and the living can ease their suffering by offering them food to eat. Buddhist scholars say the festival of the dead stems from the three month period when Buddha went into retreat during the rainy season. During that time, monks were not allowed to leave the Pagoda overnight, unless their parents were seriously ill. In Buddha’s time, the festival of the dead lasted about one month. In later years, it was reduced to 15 days because many families were busy with their farming.

USA SUMMER PROGRAM I spent two weeks of my summer in New York which is also known as the Big Apple. It was the most incredible and memorable trip I’ve ever had. I’ve experienced so many new and different things which I never imagined I’d be able to do. I was blessed to be able to enjoy this trip with my girl friends, while meeting many more new and awesome people. We didn’t have much time but every single minute counts and we made the best out of each day. And now, here am I, wanting to go back. By Kim Harrison

It was an amazing trip. I had some unforgettable experiences to fill in my life. I swear I will never forget the day I visited NYC with my friends. Our main purpose was to have fun while we're still young and we thought that was no better time as now to go to NYC together. We didn't have any second thoughts or regrets making this trip. NYC is an amazing city where there are tons of special places like the famous Times Square. We made friends and enjoyed the time with each other. We took pictures as many as we could, also we walked a lot. We loved it. The food was fine as well as the accommodation. What I really loved the most was the day we went hiking and got to watch the city at night. It was such a memorable time. By Puthina Keang

This was a trip like no other; the best of the best to be exact. I not only had a wonderful time and met new people but I also got closer to my friends and had some unforgettable experiences. Me and my friends visited a lot of places and had a lot of fun. Not to mention that we also got a two weeks prep course for the SATs with the best teachers ever. We had a few long boring car rides but it was all worth it to just visit places such as the White House, the capital building, and a couple of Ivy league universities. Even though these may sound like some of the best places to visit, for me the best trip was definitely when we went to six flags. I for one have never really been on a rollercoaster so my friends pushed me to take a leap of faith. We went on approximately 11 rollercoasters and it was beyond amazing. Also, we had late night sleepovers and did many weird, funny, unforgettable, and crazy things. I wish I could do it all over again because it is one of those memories that you will never forget. Why? Because you had fun, you went somewhere without your parents around, and you made it back alive with a new taste of what independence is like. By Mei lan Loh

London Eye When we arrived in the UK, we were all looking forward to being on top of one of the World’s tallest Ferris wheels, The London Eye. The moment we got to hop on the ferris wheel, we were automatically hypnotized by the view. As we moved to the top of the ferris wheel, we saw Big Ben and all of the other amazing sights. Everyone was taking millions of pictures and suddenly our teacher asked if we could all take a moment to absorb the beautiful sights and experience. We leaned against the glass, and suddenly saw much more than just a second before. All of the buildings varied in structure and size. A few buildings were modern and made of glass, they were twinkling in sun. The majority of buildings were older and were made of beige with a hint of gold brick and intricate stone carvings of religious leaders. The dark blue water glistened and it moved slowly under us. It was simply stunning. We began to clear our mind and enjoy the moment. Moving forward, we are going to appreciate every moment with our own eyes, not through the lens of a camera. As we looked at Big Ben, we thought, we’re here. We’re actually in London.

On the 27th June 2015, I was to go to the UK; I felt completely nothing because I was too engulfed in an overwhelming excitement. I packed everything and checked everything countless times just to make sure that I wouldn’t forget any important things. I got to the airport around 9pm, and again, I was attacked by the same surge of feelings which had me almost crying and bursting in to laughter at the same time. Everyone arrived at the airport and then went to the check-in counter to get our boarding passes. I almost had a heart attack when my friend realised that her passport was five months past expiration. Mr. Sedar came to the rescue; he told the check-in staff that she could still be checked in because she could go on her issued visa. After that, we took some pictures with my friend’s family then we went up to get ready for boarding. That was how my trip began. We were taken to many significant places in London, like The British Museum, St. Paul’s Cathedral, The Natural Museum, and Madame Tussauds. If you can picture a clutter of old vintage buildings, then you can also picture the city of London’s view. Aside from the walking tours, we also did some riding tours. We got to ride on the famous open-topped red double-decker bus and sightsee for two hours. The tour covered almost all of London’s most famous places, like Buckingham Palace, London Bridge, The London eye, The Big Ben, and two other famous bridges. In addition to visiting London, we also got to spend a great amount of time at our summer school and

visiting Cambridge and Birmingham. In Cambridge, we went around the university where old colleges lie; walking inside Cambridge is like walking inside a Harry Potter movie. We shopped around in their magnificent bookstores where we can find books that are published by Cambridge University Press. In Birmingham, we visited a mouth-watering place, Cadbury’s World. We learned a lot about the history of chocolate and the factory history, as well. We also got to taste the chocolate for free too and it was so awesome. Last but not least, I just cannot exclude the shopping experience. We got to shop in Harrods, Selfridges&Co, and also many shops along Oxford Street. In both shopping malls, all categories of products are divided onto different floors. However, on Oxford Street all the brands and products, both internationally and locally made, can be found along the street. On this summer program I made a lot of friends from different countries, like Russia, France, Turkey, Slovakia, and China. From these precious experiences and memories, I feel nostalgic towards England. I highly recommend and encourage my juniors to give it a try for their summer program and experience something that is truly extraordinary and will last a lifetime.

Zaman International School - High School Magazine

After studying at Zaman for four years, I never thought I would have be given a leadership position. I always thought that I would just be that guy who goes through his high school years not having any specific titles at all, but then again, it is nice to know that a great number of students were so kind enough to actually vote for me. I really have to thank my classmates for their enthusiasm and willingness to help me run my campaign. In all honesty, this position as “president is quite new to me but I will try my best to be a good one. I am supposedly the voice of the student body to the school administration, along with our vice-pres-

idents, which means if you have any problems related to school, besides solving your homework and doing your projects, then we can try to help you solve it. We will also try to come up with ideas for school administration events to keep the school active and interesting such as; the STEM festival, culture festival, charity events, guest lectures, and so on. Lastly, I don’t know if politicians have ever done this before but I would like to thank everyone who voted for me. Thank you for making my senior year a bit more interesting.

The term president has always been a word of superiority, reminding us of someone with a very important role, one that requires determination, amazing leadership, communication skills, and, probably the most important, responsibility. As you already know, for the past 5 years, our school has had the tradition of holding an election to choose a suitable candidate who stands as the representative of the student body. To be very truthful, I have never been the perfect student. I have never had straight A’s or exemplary discipline. Due to this, I was in great shock, knowing that I had been elected as president. Of course, it is hard to deny the overwhelming joy that comes with great responsibility. Although I have never been a part of the students’ union, which makes me lacking in many areas, I will promise to do everything

in my power to make this academic year educating, entertaining, and rewarding for all of you fellow students. Although there are quite a few things I can do for you, including voicing your opinions and requirements towards the administration, there are certain things I hope you will help me with, and that is to work together with me and the rest of the students’ union. Together we are the heart and soul of this school, so never hesitate to come to me for whatever problems you have, big or small, I will do everything I can to help. Once again, thank you for voting for me, let’s together make this a memorable year.

Principal’s Message For Class of 2015 Dear chairman, dear colleagues, dear parents and class of 2015 Thank you for joining us this evening and thank you for providing the support and guidance that has fostered the success of these fine young men and women. I would also like to take a moment to thank our colleagues and administrative staff for their effort. End of high school is a turning point from when it is time to take responsibilities for a student; it is the time when the teachers’ advice starts to make sense. Some think that graduation is the end of the ties between a school / teachers and students. However, what I honestly believe is that our relationship now is ascending to a new dimension. This is a dimension in which we are no more formal, moreover we are now closer to each other. To be close means we can keep in touch, organize activities and be part of the huge Zaman alumni network. Throughout the time, I have come to believe that learning is like swimming against a current in the river. If you do not proceed and progress, you will definitely recede. So you should always keep yourselves up-to-date. As a scholar says, difficulties and troubles of the past would melt while happiness would remain forever untouched. Likewise, there were hard times and good times all together. We, your teachers and my colleagues, bury all the hurtful things into history and we only keep timeless positive memories we have shared. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own now. You are the person who’ll decide where to go.” Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Before you stretch a lifetime of adventure and opportunity, look back with fondness and happy memories but always look forward with strength and determination. I wish you all success and happiness. Valedictory Speech

ment you get from your parents is confirmed by your friend which gives you confidence. They help you out when you’re in need, they listen to you when you are in pain, and the list goes on and on and on. These years went by so quickly that we didn’t have time to stop and think about this. That’s why I want to spend this time to thank all my friends who have helped me all this time, no matter what problems they are facing.

T

Senior Graduatio

he graduation ceremony held at the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra took place on June 13, 2015. The ballroom was beautifully decorated with several large crystal chandeliers that sparkled overhead. The tables were covered with tablecloths and circled by chairs with seat covers. Staff bustled among the tables while carrying silver water pitchers and several courses of delicacies and formal favorites. And, amid all of this celebration, the seniors, formerly clad in school uniforms as young students, walked in elegant gowns and suits as young adults. It was a lovely evening. The night began with special Apsara dances, although other well-loved dances, such as the Robam Khmer, would also fill the schedule. The dances mirrored the grace and traditions embodied in the graduation ceremony. As the night began, it was a chance for the teachers and staff to meet the families of the students.

Many of the students’ parents at Zaman have time-consuming careers or household obligations that prevent large gatherings of young and old on a regular basis. Zaman is an international school where the students are necessarily trained in multiple languages to be leaders in demanding professions. It is also a private school that is expected to nurture their emotions and provide support and flexibility as they go through life changes. As a teacher of future business leaders, neighbors, mothers and fathers, I found it incredibly sweet to watch the seniors interact with their younger siblings. They were proud and generous in the ways they introduced and helped the little ones. It was clear that the students were surrounded by people who valued the right things. The Grade 12 Valedictorian Channimol Touch gave the senior speech. She talked about friendships and memories. The students have had so many adventures together. For months and years, five days a week, eight hours each day the students sat side-by-side sharing fears, hopes, problems, loves, and notes. She was thankful for the strength she received from her classmates. She has used that momentum for good things. She has achieved in both academics and extra-curricular activities. It was nice to see Ms. Touch celebrate her peers while receiving her own hardearned recognition.

While the families chatted and sipped water, orange juice, and soda from goblets, the graduates prepared backstage for the senior class song & dance. 12A graduating senior Nittavann gave a special performance. Each senior class, 12A/12B/12E/12F, had a song & dance routine that required them to spend hours together practicing and enjoying their teamwork.

on

They also created senior videos to be shown as introductions for the routines. The students had gathered photographs that were taken over the last several years. They had also gathered film during the last few weeks of classes. All of the images were compiled into visual scrapbooks. Each video was played before the class proceeded onto the stage. Rock songs, pop music, and traditional music all blended as the students danced and sang. Principal M. Gurkan Cil personally gave each Zaman Senior his/her graduation diploma. Each student paused for a handshake and photograph. Some carried the diplomas carefully, watching to avoid any wrinkles or dents. Others waved the diplomas overhead as they walked into the wings of the stage. Some tried to figure out how to store it and tuck it away.

The last goodbye was the tossing of the graduation caps! The students gathered on stage and prepared for the toss. I read a quote by Zora Neale Hurston: “No matter how far a person can go the horizon is still way beyond you.” The topic of change and the power of human relationships were constants in Hurston’s writings. I intentionally did not choose the quote from the American author’s most famous book entitled Their Eyes Were Watching God. That book is about one woman’s journey through life that ends in the same place it began, yet she is forever changed. She was an inspiring author because she consistently wrote about daily life choices having the ability to empower and define long term ambitions and success. Although this wisdom, actually advice, is ancient, the reminder is timely. The seniors are preparing for colleges, trade schools, marriages, and jobs. Some of these challenges will be far more demanding, take much longer to fully achieve, and the daily choices of friends or activities made along the way will define their lives. When the caps went sailing into the air… and sailing into the air again… and sailing into the air… for all the necessary pictures and videos, the smiles on the seniors were timeless. They are an exceptional group of young people. We all look forward to seeing their futures unfold!

12B Graduation is an exciting time in a person’s life, especially a high school graduation. No more high school, and for some it means that they are now able to move out on their own and embark on the independent journey of college. Although we were finally leaving high school, the feeling of being unsure didn’t go away. Moments that we all had shared, every new friends that we have made throughout the year have great

impact on our lives. We had ups and downs but especially, we were able to move forward as one team; having fun together, cherishing the time that we had and keeping one another in our heart. Graduation day was a very exciting day and full of dramas; but hopefully, I wish that there will be another day just like that day. 12B 14th Generation will always be in my heart. 12F Time flies and our graduation day had come. It was a big day for us and a precious moment that we had shared together. I still remember the feeling I had on that day. We’re happy, excited, nervous, plus we all cried, hugging each other so hard. Our parents sitting there in the hall watching us wearing gowns and holding the diploma certificate is the most touching thing to do as we finish high school. Furthermore, while watching the class song, we sang along as the tears just dropped down. I feel like I’m going to be apart from friends and from teachers. I’m

going to miss something, a part of me will be gone and I won’t be here to study in this school anymore. On that day, I realized that I’m mature enough and I will soon take a step into university life. To the next generation, I bet they will feel the same way as I did. They will experience the last year of their high school lives and their excitement on their graduation day. Last but not least, I wish and pray for all the 12th graders this year and I wish them all the best. Especially best of luck with their national exam! By Bonasy Hoy

Language Learning In my country, there is a great saying about the importance of language which is, “if you can speak a language, you have a power of man. If you speak two languages, you have the power of two men. If you can speak more, you have the power of how many languages you speak”. This idiom points out the value of a language. Is there anything else like a language which is so effective for people to communicate with each other? A language is such a thing that we can use it to connect to various cultures and races. For example, if you imagine that you are on an unknown planet and there are different species on this planet who speak their own languages which are different than your languages, you are looking around as you don’t understand them. In the situation, firstly, what are you going to do? Of course, you find a way to learn their language. A language is a necessity because you have to express your needs and feelings to another being. In human history, what has been founded has been out of necessity. If eating, love, and technological improvements are necessity, talking is as well. Nowadays, people can’t make language enough, they are learning more than one because one or even two languages aren’t enough. In the world, there are a few languages that are being used by people in large amounts, which are Chinese, English, Urdu, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, French, and Turkish. Someone who knows 3-4 of these languages can find a job easily and travel to different parts of the world.

For this point, I am dealing with Turkish because I am a Turkish teacher. Today, in the world, 200 million people are speaking Turkish and this number is increasing day by day. What is the Turkish language like? Is it easy to learn? Let’s answer these questions. Turkish is an agglutinative language. This means that when you add a word on to an original word, the word’s meaning will change. In this way, you will create another word. For example, ‘okul’ it means school. When I add ‘a’, it will be ‘okula’ which means to school. When you add another word which is ‘da’, the original meaning will change, it will be ‘okulda’ which means at school. Turkish also has quite an easy pronunciation. The Turkish alphabet consists of 29 characters. The Turkish alphabet and the English alphabet are similar but there are some additional letters which are ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, ü. These can be hard pronouncing for the first time but you can overcome this problem by doing speaking exercises. The other way of learning Turkish is to sing songs and listen to them as well. For this reason, I teach two-three songs in a year. Moreover, if some students have a skill in singing, I push them to participate in a great event, the international language and culture festival (iflc). Last year, some of our students received medals from the organisation. This year, Sonty and Porcheav represented our school. Sonty received a silver medal and Porcheav also got a bronze medal. I thank both our students for their hard work.

Programming In the current century, people want everything to be automatic; traffic lights, airplanes, surgery, and even the weather. When you consider new technological improvements all around the world, you will understand that human beings want to have everything under control. I want to mention how technological improvements, especially computer programming, came about and how it became a modern language. The Kurdish medieval scientist Al-Jazari built programmable automata in 1206 AD. It was a machine or a control mechanism designed to automatically follow a sequence of programs. This system was utilized with the use of pegs and cams placed into a wooden drum at specific locations which would sequentially trigger levers that in turn operated percussion instruments. The output of this device was a small drummer playing various rhythms and drum patterns. Furthermore, this device was dependant on an algorithm and its source of energy was water. When he put them together, he figured out that he had controlled motions using an algorithm and water power; this is the basics of programming and computing. During World War II, American, German, and British scientists made great progress on electronics, such as radar systems, the invention of the semiconductor, and calculating positions by using electronic circuits. These improvements created the backbone of the first general-purpose computer. The Analytical Engine was a proposed mechanical general-purpose computer which was designed by an English Mathematician and computer pioneer, Charles Babbage. The Analytical Engine incorporated an arithmetic logic unit, controlled flow in the form of conditional branching and loops, and integrated memory, making it the first design for a general-purpose computer that could be described, in modern terms, as Turing-complete. After that, the first computer (ENIAC) was built in the USA by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at University of Pennsylvania.

affected every field of our daily life, like communication, transportation, health, engineering, education, sport, space, technology, and so on. The invention of the John von Neumann architecture allowed computer programs to be stored in computer memory. The first machine language was developed which was based on binary notation. After that, assembly languages were developed that let the programmer specify each instruction in a text format. It was the first instance of a modern or high level language which means that it was similar to a spoken language. Programmers are able to code their own comments as if they are actually speaking to a computer. In 1954, FORTRAN was invented right after the assembly languages (C, java, PHP, Python, Visual Basic, Perl, and Ruby). Programming is an everlasting vogue, for 820 years now. It is neither a start nor an end. It exists with Algebra and we see a lot of inventions and improvements that we can handle, a lot of problems easily solved thanks to programming. Undoubtedly, it takes a great place in our lives. You can see it in everywhere, like on the bus, on a ship, in your cell phone, in your washing machine, and so on. Additionally, a programmer deals with new kinds of programming languages and artificial intelligences. Maybe in this decade, everything will be totally different due to the limitless possibilities of programming. We may soon see flying cars, clever robots, robotic surgeons, and self-driving vehicles.

ZIS FRIENDSHIP BREAKFAST

Noah’s pudding party “Offering of peace and love”

As a new teacher at the school I felt pleasantly welcomed to the Zaman family when we shared a taste of Noah’s pudding together. The tradition of Noah’s pudding is celebrated by some Jewish, Christian and Muslim cultures. It originates from the story of Noah’s Ark; Noah and his family celebrated coming to rest on Mount Ararat with a special pudding. As they had spent so much time out at sea, the pudding was prepared with the little food they had left: grains and dried fruits. Some of the teachers had spent all day preparing Noah’s pudding for us, carefully adding the various ingredients, such as pomegranate, rice, nuts, plums and other delicious fruits. Before sharing this tasty dessert together, we watched a video that taught us that Noah’s pudding signifies a successful mix of seemingly incompatible ingredients. If the ingredients are carefully treated according to their specific requirements, a wonderful nutritious meal can be created. In the same way we could attempt to treat each other with respect and love for our differences, so together we can become a beautiful mosaic of flavours, just like Noah’s pudding.

SUMMER SCHOOL After the academic year finished, I joined summer school so that I wouldn’t feel bored staying at home. The course started on June 29th. On the first day, when I came to school, I met Visal, who’s also a 9th grader at ZIS this year but he didn’t study at ZIS last year. First, we felt like strangers as we had not taken any courses together before. After a few days, however, we started to get closer and became good friends. During summer school, we did many new things, such as learning , new words, having fun with new games, and we even went on some field trips. I enjoyed some classes, especially music. We played and sang songs with our music teacher. There were a lot of unforgettable memories and I will not forget the friendships I created with many new friends. The summer school came to an end after 8 weeks of classes. The last day was August 21st. Before everyone went back to their own houses, we had had a party and we also received a summer school certificate. I really enjoyed summer school and I hope I will be able to join it again next summer.

THE LIVER DETOXIFICATION PATHWAYS I am the body’s main fat-digesting and detoxification organ. Every molecule of fat that you eat must pass through me, but if I am overburdened by more than 500 other essential activities, I can become sluggish. Here are ways to boost my function: 1. Since the liver requires high amounts of vitamins and minerals to perform its many functions, your diet should be high in fruits and vegetables and nutrient-rich foods. 2. Because food additives and preservatives need to be filtered by your liver, your diet should be free of processed foods, artificial food additives, colourings, and preservatives to take the load off your liver. Additionally, choose to eat diet low in refined sugar and synthetic sweeteners. 3. You should definitely be avoiding margarine, shortening, commercial oils (choose unrefined oils from the refrigerator section of your local health food store). Avoid eating animal fat and fried foods as well. 4. Drink between eight to ten glasses of pure, filtered water every day. This is the only way your liver can flush toxins out of your body. 5. Better yet, start every day with a large glass of water with the fresh juice of one-half to one lemon add-

ed. Lemon helps bolster your liver’s detoxification abilities. 6. Eat plenty of liver-rebuilding foods, including: carrots, beets, leafy greens, and other green vegetables. 7. Eat lots of garlic, onions, and broccoli since these foods contain sulfur which is required to increase the liver’s detoxification ability. 8. Detoxification in the liver requires considerable amounts of nutrients to function properly so be sure to take a high quality multivitamin and mineral supplement. Even a single nutrient deficiency can seriously disrupt natural detoxification processes. 9. While lying flat on your back, you can gently massage the liver/gallbladder area, which is located along the lower rib area on the right side of your body. This helps improve circulation to the area. Always consult your physician prior to making your liver healthy. Resource: http://www.liver.ca http://www.care2.com
