GENIUS OLYMPIAD 2016: WE DID IT AGAIN! Being able to attend Genius Olympiad for my second phase was actually another level of challenge both for me and my teammate, Sokheang. Even though this was our second time - as we also joined last year-, it still wasn’t an easy work for us to complete our research and project we painstakingly prepared this year. Challenging all qualifiers around the globe was tremendously tough mainly because there was significant number of outstanding projects presented to the honorable judges. The judges visited our booth and so we presented our work immediately. Our audience intently listened and while they were carefully writing down our score. The deliberation for the winner took half-a-day and the results were ready the following day. All finalists were called on to the stage accordingly starting from the Honorable Mentions to Bronze, Silver, Gold and Grand winners. Our research and project bagged the bronze medal which I anticipated. This wasn’t a disappointment for me just because we received the first prize last year; instead it was another learning experience for me and Sokheang. We both once more represented our countrymen showing what we,Cambodians, are capable of. As an experienced contestant, I would like to send my words to all students in Zaman starting from the 10th grade: This would be a rare opportunity you’d have, so grab it! Accept the challenge. Don’t be fearful of failure because this chance to experience the outer world would also serve as a training ground for exploration. Win or lose, this would still be a great accomplishment. Why? It’s because you would be representing your nation, your country and most especially, yourself. Name: Rothvichet Poch Class: 12-B

THE STORY OF 3 PHOTOS

Life is full of surprises. One day while you are walking in the school corridor, you notice an colored, A3-size poster featuring GENIUS Olympiad. Although you are not confident in joining because of lack of experience and interest, your friend talks you into giving a try and send abstract. A few hours later you find yourself browsing the internet to get more scoop about this Olympiad. You ask your never-asked questions to your friends and talk to your science teachers more frequently. Why? Because you want your medal displayed and your name scripted at the school lobby. This is Zaman International School and “you refers to not only the participants seen in the pictures but also any curious student, interested reader, motivated candidate, keen scholarship-seeker or maybe a well-known prospective scientist/ researcher. This is YOUR story. Here starts the story of 3 pictures in this article. Action speaks louder than words. Pictures do the loudest. I will try to depict the past and the future of these snapshots, because every picture has a past and future but you, the reader, see that picture only.

AT THE AIRPORT BEFORE: A few months had passed by very quickly. Lots of endless research and draft writing. Sleepless nights. Team work with sometimes enjoying collaboration and sometimes ending up in arguments. Follow-up and abstract submission with your supervisor. Snacks and biscuits in the breaks at the weekends. Experiments, failure and success. Everything was over. You packed what you had prepared and were waiting for the final stage. You remembered the moment when your supervisor told you that you had been shortlisted. You were jubilant, speechless and just felt the sense of pride of achievement and hope of being a champion. After dreaming of grabbing the chance to study or even at least travel to the USA, you finally made it. You bought some warm clothes and a GAP coat as you had read that there was some breeze and chilling in Oswego, New York State. You did not forget to buy some souvenirs for the opponents during

4

the competition and would-be-friends afterwards. You were very excited to get to know them and their cultures. You had heard about the activity of ice-breakers, held on the first day the arrival, from the previous year medalists. A few drops of tears accumulated at the side of your eyes, as you would miss your family, your friends, dogs and your country during this fortnight-trip. AFTER: Your journey was long and exhausting but worth it. Your plane was flying across the Atlantic Ocean. While the other passengers were dozing off, you were awake maybe because of excitement or anxiety. You had set high goals with your partner in the beginning and so it was high time you did some prep going over the presentation and asking some questions that you would expect to get from the judges. When asked why you were still up instead of taking some rest, you replied with certainty that you were cool and not feeling sleepy yet. After many hours of flight, the plane finally touched down at(John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, USA. You bought yourself your first cup of coffee in the USA.

AT THE STAGE BEFORE: The bus was taking you to the campus where the GENIUS Olympiad would be held. Same type of cars, apartments, brands, sky, sunshine. Yet, wider roads, different vegetation, some deer in the forests, lots of space, overweight people. You started daydreaming of studying at an Ivy League university, then working at one of these skyscrapers in Manhattan, settling down in a mansion in the countryside, and so on. With lots of viewing, sightseeing, chitchatting and taking photos, the bus trip took shorter than expected and it arrived at the spacious and green campus of State University of New York. You went through the registration and got your room key. Finally, you were in the bed where you could nod off comfortably. You were very anxious, which could be spotted anywhere anytime. As expected, it was too cold that you felt freezing and

ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

chilled to the bone. Most of the time you stayed in your room as you had wanted to realize your goal and make your teachers and parents proud. You left the campus once for only running errands and grabbing some sandwich at Subway, located inside the closest Wal-Mart. On that remarkable day when the presentations were made, everything was stressful in the morning but your teachers and friends helped you calm down. Luckily, the presentation of your project and Q&A session went well and you were able to answer all the challenging questions thanks to your comprehensive study and analytical research skills. Considering that there were many top students from different states of the country and other nations, you just could not make sure to accomplish extraordinary success. AFTER: The announcements started with the Honorary Mention, followed by Bronze medalists and then continued with the ones who won Silver. You barely lost your hope. However, when your name appeared on the large screen which could be seen from many seats in the hall and was announced as the Gold medal winner loudly, you were jumping up next to your table and hugging your partner. You shed some tears and wished that your parents were there to witness the indescribable, once-in-a-lifetime moment. You did not forget to take Cambodian flag that your team had brought along and ran to the stage. The medal was hung around your neck and you posed for the flashing photos and selfies. That day, Cambodia was one of the countries which were announced many times in the hall thanks to its smart, hard-working students and dedicated, motivated teachers. You were glad to be studying at ZIS when you were applauding all the way as it was awarded with a plaquette in recognition of being the school with the most projects shortlisted for that year’s Olympiad. You called your family paying no heed to what time it was in Cambodia at that time and shared the best news ever with your family members and sent the photos and the messages to your classmates and friends via social media.

BACK AT THE AIRPORT AGAIN, IN FRONT OF THE TV CAMERAS AND PRESS BEFORE: Everything has taken its place in your mind as unforgettable memory. Hour-long shopping at the malls, taking painful strolls along the well-known avenues of New York City, visiting loads of shops of the popular brands, shop-till-you-drop experience, satisfying hunger sometimes at either fast-food or sumptuous restaurants. Your day at Six Flags, located in New Jersey, was superb, too. Heart-shaking thrills, wet’n’wild waterslides, unique, pulse-pounding and state-of-the-art roller coasters, gravity-defying rides. AFTER: Your baggage was heavy, as it had lots of gifts for your beloved ones and goods and souvenirs for yourself. Your family took you to their vehicle and bombarded you with lots of inquiries. You reunited with your family and would meet up your friends in the coming days. You were invited for TV programmes and newspaper interviews. Your picture was featured in the school magazine and you placed your GENIUS Olympiad certificate in your portfolio to submit to the colleges/ universities to earn some scholarships. Good luck to the participants in GENIUS Olympiad 2017.

ZIS' 1ST HALLOWEEN BLAST 2016 Halloween is considered as one of the well sought holidays which only happens once (on the 31st of October) a year. The celebration gives people the opportunity to creatively dress up and mainly, to have fun (trick-or-treating) with family and friends. Zaman International School has had many exciting and interesting events held in the past. Unfortunately, ZIS have never celebrated Halloween before which is probably the reason why the students eagerly waited for this moment. They were actually thrilled when they were informed about it. Although tickets were needed in order to join, there were still a great number of participants as they knew that 100% of the generated profit will be for a good cause. The event was hosted by Zaman Student Union but there were also several volunteers who helped organize the event. The painstaking process of planning and implementing the project was discouraging but fortunately, the organizers’ tremendous determination and enthusiasm made the project such a success. A day before the event, boys and girls joined forces to achieve a harmonious theme. Some went to buy materials as soon as classes ended while others started to decorate by placing artificial spider webs and splattering fake blood in some classroom. They also sprayed creepy images and graffiti on the magazine papers covering the glass windows to add more chills to the room. On the day of the event, several volunteers painted their face white, wore jetblack lipstick, smeared fake blood on their body, and donned their scary costume with the sole intention of terrifying everyone who passes by. There were also various activities prepared such as watching two timetabled horror movies: “Poltergeist” was played in the morning and “The Grudge” on display at noon; taking awesome photos at the photo booth; and checking out the most anticipated part of the whole event, the “Haunted House”- a concept that just started last year. ZIS’ first Halloween Party was a success. The ZSU and volunteers have done an impressive job despite the fact that the preparation was only for few hours. The event was surely a tedious task however, everything else turned out great. 36 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

A school event doesn’t only benefit participants and beneficiaries but organizers, facilitators and coordinators, as well. It brings the students and staff members together. It solidifies friendship with old friends and develops a bond with acquaintances during the process. We hope that in the future, ZIS would again allow and support the students to organize events just like this year’s Halloween program. Name: Chhenglun Pen Class:12-E

TRIP TO SIEM REAP (11E)

On the 22nd of June, my friends and I went to Siem Reap with our beloved homeroom Teacher Jennet and assistant Rabia. During this trip, we had made lots of unforgettable moments. In the morning of departure day everyone met up at the Phnom Penh International Airport. We landed in Siem Reap by 11 am and went to rest at the Angkor Miracle hotel. After the lunch, we decided to visit Cultural Village. We left the village around 6 PM and proceed to have dinner at Pub Street which is the most talked about night market in Cambodia. Moving onto the next day, all of us went to famous Angkor Wat Temple. Unfortunately, after just stepping the entrance sky started to pour heavy rain. My friends and I was so eager to see the amazing Temple so, we went in by using umbrella and raincoat. It was so refreshing running with my friend under the rain. By the end of the day we visit Angkor museum. The final day, we woke up and went to shopping at T-Galleria. After the last activity, all of us went to airport and get ready to go back home. Even though, the plane has delayed and we couldn’t get home until 9 o’clock we enjoyed time together. Name: Houyting Hong Class:11-E

All those things happened in Siem Reap will never be forgotten. The 10km bike ride in Cultural Village, our first walk in pub street together, our walk under the rain at Angkor Wat, the poolside pizza, the shopping and the sunset at airport. This trip will keep reminding us of each other, no matter where we are. Name: Rithya Mong Dom Class:11-E 42 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

Our trip to Siem Reap was like “FRIENDSHIP TRIP” and was a memorable trip that we can’t forget. We understood each other more and more, we understood about what friendship means. We learnt how to enjoy the moments that we have. As an example walking under the rain in temple, swimming together, watching sunset at the airport, shopping, sleep over, riding bikes and etc. I hope that we will have another trip together soon. Name: Shiennith Kea Class:11-E Siem Reap has always been my second favorite city because it holds numerous beautiful memories I’ve spent with all the people I love. And, this Siem Reap trip was another step for our friendship and our bond to be stronger and closer. It was an unforgettable memory that will possibly stay at the back of my mind for a long time and will be one wonderful throwback to think of in the future. Name:Khunkimpor Sun Class:11-E

TRIP TO KOMPOT (12B)

I have had a really amazing time with my buddies at Kompot province- the land of durians and spectacular waterfall. The trip took about 3 hour, but it did not seem to bore us at all because we had music, some snacks and most importantly, a powerful bond of friendship. The food was delightful especially our breakfast, fried crab rice, which is a traditional Kompot style dish. Some of us, including me ate two bowls of those because the dish was so irresistibly tasty. At Tada waterfall, the water was as clear as a crystal. It was the first clearest water source that I have seen in Cambodia. We also had a barbeque party and everybody had a lot of fun. After w left Tada waterfall, we headed over the coast to try zip line. I have always been scared of heights. Even though I did not ride the zip line, I watched my friends as they do it. I could see the fun in their eyes who made the nerve-wrecking trip through from one side to the other despite the heavy and pouring rain. All in all, we really had a fantastic time together in Kompot province and we hope for another trip just like this soon.

IDP UK EXPO There was an education fair at ACE TTP on the 26th of October and our class (12F) was invited to join the event. When we first arrived, we were asked by the IDP members to register our personal information into the devices. Some of the IDP elected representatives asked us which university we would prefer to study at after finishing our high school year. Later on, we received a free Costa drink with a coupon that they provided earlier including a bag of books and pamphlets. Straight away, we were led by the arrow signs towards the room where the fair was held. We spent our remaining time seeking information from random universities there. We also took plenty of photos from the photo booth with an amazing Britain theme. Thus, we acquired knowledge about UK universities and their requirements for application. Truthfully, it was one of the best exhibitions we’ve been through as the event was executed with much precision and enthusiasm.

THE JOURNEY OF CAMBODIAN STUDENT TO MIT “I knew it was real. Everything I have done up to that point will determine how my adult life is going to start,” says a young Cambodian girl who is currently studying in Boston, U.S. Grew up in Phnom Penh, a 20-year-old girl, Sotheara has made so much effort and determination to achieve a golden opportunity to be a scholarship student majoring in Biological Engineering in one of the prestigious universities in the U.S, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Back in the past years, Sotheara was a student of Zaman International School and graduated in 2012. As she was young, Sotheara did not have much faith in herself, and she often feel uncertain toward what she wants to do with her favorite science biology subject. Her life met its changing point she got an opportunity to meet a Cambodian scientist, Rethy Chem, who is the Director of the Division of Human Health at International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Rethy Chem’s struggling experiences and his successful career path have deeply inspired her to start to believe in herself that she can be anything she wants to be.

With her high level of academic competency, the support from her friends and the passion to be a doctor, Sotheara was successfully selected to be a Biological Engineering student at MIT and currently enrolled as a junior student. Apart from what she strive for her academic journey, Sotheara has also been involved in community service activities and was a leader of SEALNet Project Cambodia 2015 which was conducted in Cambodia on August 2015. She also completed student internship in India and Singapore in the field of her study during her sophomore year. From her academic accomplishment, Sotheara gains more trust in herself that she defines. “To be a successful person, you have to believe in yourself. You need to define what you count as success. And you have to definitely ask yourself what you want for yourself.”

Regardless of what she has achieved in her adult life, Sotheara still have a problem to communicate with her parents of what she want to live her life. This is what failure means to her. “Failure to me is not being able to fix the problem in your life even you tried so many solutions” This is how her role model has changed her academic life explains Sotheara. to a new level of accomplishment. With high commitment to follow her passion science, Sotheara has worked “However, it is not finite. People can change it.
