The students received their certificates and some presents. Parents attended to appreciate their kids’ success as well. The refreshments and snacks lent more time for teachers and parents to catch up with updates about the school, next academic year and students’ progress. Thank you for our parents and students for making time to visit the campus and share these moments!

APT JSO Team In addition, we experienced various activities that exposed the Filipino and other participating countries’ cultures. We had a ‘’cultural Night’’, which was one of the great parts of the event, where our students performed Khmer traditional dance in Khmer traditional clothes. It was a mind-opening experience, not only because we had a chance to experience the Olympiad but also it was an international event that brought together representaAPT JSO is an annual competition organized since tives from all around the world for a common pur2012 to develop gifted and talented students aged pose and showed how interconnected our world is between 13 to 15 years in science and technolo- today. gy fields and to nurture future scientists and engineers. On 12-18 June 2016, me and our Zaman International School students, Somavattey Im, Anna Te, Sithiktiya Chey had an opportunity to join 5th ASEAN Plus Three Junior Science Odyssey (APTJSO) Science Olympiad which was held in the Philippines. As Cambodian group, we received 1 Silver and 3 Bronze Medals in Biology Laboratory Skills Category.

The event was composed of a poster exhibition, a laboratory skills competition, field exposures and project pitching. The theme of 5th APT JSO Olympiad was “Climate Change and the Rainforest”. As participants, we experienced the real challenges that confront the rainforest as an ecosystem, as it plays a critical role in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Over the summer of the previous academic year, I, along with two of my friends were invited to join a science competition in the Philippines. On June 11th, we went together as a team with our supervisor, T.Jennet, to join the 5th Asean Plus Three Junior Science Odyssey. When we arrived at the airport, we felt cheerfully excited, yet very nervous since it was our first time to ever get a chance to learn and experience such a competition. However, we did try our best and worked so hard for the entire week in the Philippines.

day, we did a project pitching by mixed group and dance for the cultural night. The next day, we were so relieved that we finished all the assessments and presentations of the program. We got to tour around many places including the mall. We’ve realized that all the hard work and everything we put in over the last few months paid off.

Though it was an academic competition, it also gave us the opportunity to strengthen the relationship among ASEAN members and foster friendship and networking with all the participating teams from different nations and cultures. It was such a wonderful journey for us. We did On the very first day, we went for an orientation many activities we had never done and went to given by the directors and professors in UPLB. We places we had never visited before. also had our poster presented on that day with the theme, “Climate Change and the Rainforest”. On the second day, we went on a tour to the Makiling Botanic Garden for tree planting and field exposure. The next day was interesting yet tiring day for us. We were assigned to do 3 laboratory Name: Sithiktiya Chey skills assessments on 3 different subjects which Class:10-F are biology, physics, and chemistry. On our fourth

Genius Olympiad is an international event that is filled with great opportunities and I should know, because I was one of the lucky contestants who had the chance to join. In this competition there are various people that you will meet from countless of countries such as America, Cameron, Brazil, Romania, Turkey, etc. I actually met a few people from lots of various countries. They were friendly people and explained to me of their culture, which gave me a brighter view. Also, we exchanged social contacts and kept in touch when we could. Additionally, there are social events in between the competition like the Ice Breaker and International Cultural Fair. The ice Breaker consists of games that you will play with random people that you don’t know, build teamwork and have fun along the way. Moreover, International Fair was a small get-together where all the competitors and supervisors join to exchange country information, souvenirs and cultural knowledge. Furthermore, having an Olympiad on your resume for university will score you a lot of bonus points and make you out shine other applicants. Additionally, this competition will give you an insight of what university life feels like. Due to the event being arranged and held in Oswego University, it gives you a view of what the campus is and how the professors help students to achieve academic success. All in all, GENIUS Olympiad is a wonderful competition Name: Mei Lan Loh that will benefit you academically and socially too, so why wait?! Class:11-E

Completion of projects funded by This years’ charity event has been very different. Our students wholeheartedly took the mission of generating funds and came up with most creative ideas. The projects were most popular among students, and even their teachers willingly helped make the charity week most successful. This charity keeps bringing us together as a community. We experience what it is like to be at Zaman. And in the spirit of pride that every contribution from each community member will make a difference in the other student’s or people’s lives and education. The outcome is what we have witnessed today. A token of respect to the local education. Our students have also observed the result of their effort. We have felt humbled by the guest of honor, H.E. Hang Chuon Naron’s presence on this occasion. We thank all of our students, parents and staff for their invaluable contribution to Zaman Charity Festival.

One of the most distinguished and significant annual events hosted by Zaman is STEM which stands for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. Stem is an exclusive fair where an abundance of students can display and explain about their unique projects. From the 7th till 8th of May, it was held at the enormous building A & B, which is located at Koh Pich. Hundreds of visitors from all around the city showed up in order to explore the spectacular world of science. Every project incredibly shone in their own way as they introduced valuable knowledge, exhibited interesting features and realistic experiments. Furthermore, some projects are not just for show, they also provided the viewers an opportunity to personally participate and experience the experiments. For instance, the most captivating project which was the hover-chair allowed people to sit and enjoy riding it in midair. Moreover, the atmosphere at STEM was never dull as there were always exhilarating activities and entertainments such as singing and dancing to lighten the mood. In the end, the fair succeeded with flying colors as everyone’s face including the students was filled joy and pleasure, especially after witnessing a magnificent flash mob performed by none other than the 11 graders of Zaman.

Leaning towards the end of last school year, the 12th annual Cambodia STEM Festival was slowly approaching. This was going to be my very first-hand experience at STEM. Naturally, everyone was working hard a sweat on their projects to be displayed during the festival. I also had a project which was physics-related. People were rushing to get their project finished on time. You could really feel the adrenaline rush that day, we all successfully finished it on time. At last, the much-awaited day arrived. I was the first to stay at our table, but that wasn’t boring. Many people came by and asked questions, as I answered them and demonstrated with the models. When they were being showed the demonstration there face was lit up with excitement, which brought me joy to see other people enjoying what I’ve put much effort in. My shift was over and I finally got to move around. My whole body was filed with excitement, it could barely be contained. There were so many projects and so many cool things to see. It’s always fun to see and learn something new. All in all, I’d say it was a fascinating experience for me, and I’m sure for many other people as well. I’m looking forward to next year’s festival.

Valedictorian Speech By Victory Ravan

Good evening class of 2016, honorable guests, and esteemed staff. My name is Victory Ravan and I am the vice president of the 15th generation. It is a great honor to be standing here speaking to all of you on this special occasion. First, I’d like to express my thanks to my family, all my friends and teachers who helped me get to where I am now. I remember leaving middle school and transferring here for the first time as a 9th grader. I remember how the word “high school” often made my palms sweaty with anxiety. I’ve always imagined it being tough, and admittedly, I was scared I wouldn’t fit in because I couldn’t really speak proper Khmer then. Though we had a few rough bumps at first, my classmates grew to accept me and welcomed me as part of the class. They were kind and welcoming, smart and creative, athletic and determined. Some even conformed to my obsessive impulses with anime. How did it all go by so fast? It seems like it was only a few weeks ago that we were younger kids, chasing each other all over the school. When we all sang and danced to lyrics we did not understand in the song Gangnam Style. But now, here we are, all of us, on the threshold of new possibilities and opportunities; To embark on new pathyways to live well and with purpose. The words of Charles Dickens seems so apt right now, ‘’It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.’’ We’ve helped raise tens of thousands of dollars in many charity events, won many international contests, went on several trips to the provinces, played in many sport competitions, planted trees in front of Aeon, and had too many water and powder fights for a lifetime. As happy as I am to graduate tonight, I’ll never forget the memories we had, the struggles we went through, the fights and disagreements, the apologies and tears, the laughter and happiness we shared. We’re certainly through with the stressful days of examinations and pop quizzes. 26 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE

Now, at the end of our time as a high school student, we have an opportunity. Now’s our time to take on the world, to find and pursue our passions, to discover our own pursuit of happiness. We have been through both hardships and success and had experience in a wide range of things. Because of these conditions, I believe that we can overcome any obstacle. As graduates, we’ll face many uncertainties in both the immediate and distant future. However, uncertainty is just another word for opportunity. As Abraham Lincoln once said, “The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time”. I know many of us doubt our abilities and talents and worry about our future, but this is just the beginning. Remember that you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. All it takes is just taking a step forward. Small it may be, but strong the outcome. Over the next few years some of us may end up at a college or trade school. Some may begin working full time or even start a family. No matter where we go or what we do, there are challenges ahead of us. What I’m asking from each and every one of you today, and myself, is to meet those challenges straight on with our head held high and our hearts wide open. Always remember where you came from. And always remember where you are going. Our time together as seniors and graduates of the 15th generation will be remembered by the relationships and time we spent together. Class of 2016, it’s been a splendid 4 years with you. Congratulations to my fellow graduates! We did it! I’d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the teachers and administrators who worked so hard to make us reach this final destination. To my family who has always been there for me through thick and thin, who’ve raised me up to be the person I have become tonight, who have spent hours, days, YEARS of hard work to make sure I had all the things I needed: education, love, and support. I hope I’ve made you proud.

Summer School in USA Last summer break, I went on a two weeks vacation to United State of America with my best friends. We visited various tourist attraction cities such as NewYork, Washington DC, and Boston. I had been looking forward to this trip for almost a year. Well, You don’t usually get to go on a trip with your friends, especially when you have asian parents. And due to luck, I have experience it. A trip with my friends give me a whole new views on things. I not only become more independent yet I also learn how to manage my own time and things. I think getting to go on trips with your friends sometimes are really good for growing teenagers. One of the tourist attraction and a must-visit place is the Empires state building, since it is the second tallest building in New York. I guarantee you it is the best place to star gaze at the same time you could see the color and beauty of the city from above. Moreover, we visited Times square, it represents the liveliness of the city as it is one of the most crowded place I’ve ever seen. TV advertisement every where, and you could surely find everything you need such as shopping malls, food from different culture and the most interesting thing - street performance. We also get to visit Harvard and MIT University in Boston, I think it is a very rare chance a student could visit such famous university. The exploration of the school gives me the motivation to study harder, grabbing the chance to get into a good university. Beside, Boston is the most peaceful city in America. The last trip was to visit Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between Canada and the United States; more specifically, between the province of Ontario and the state of NewYork. They form the southern end of the Niagara gorge. I could not forget the breathtaking view of the waterfall. Last but not least. I would like to thank the following for making my time in United States so memorable. With them, the trip was warm. With them, the trip was full of happiness and laughter. With them, I grew up. It was an idyllic experience. Name: Dalux Be Class: 10-A

Hello I’m Eddie; I’m one of the students that went to the States this summer. I can’t believe I’m so in love with the USA because I’ve seen so many beautiful and breathtaking places. The first stop was the airport; obviously we were so tired of taking 14 hours of plane ride. When we were riding the van to our hotel for the first time, we passed this river that you could see New York City from the other side. At the first sight, I knew that I loved this country so much! And the next stop was a Thai restaurant which made us so happy because everybody was getting sick of those airplane foods. Everybody enjoyed their food, and then we took a 45 minute-ride to our hotel. The second day it was literally the best day of my life. The first stop of the 2nd day was a school where we had to take a test and an interview and we got to meet our teacher who was funny and friendly. Now can you guess what our next stop was? It was NEW YORK CITY; everybody was filled with excitement and nervousness because it was our first time to see this city. The city that never sleeps, the second you step your foot in this city, you feel that it is so crowded. The city was so beautiful, so I’m suggesting you to go there at least once in your life. When it was time to go back, I was so shocked because everybody was carrying 5 bags on both sides. We went to so many places and states but I’m not going to tell you all details, but here’s a sneak peak; it’s awesome!!!!!

Summer School in USA Last Summer, I went to the USA and I got a lot of experiences such as meeting a lot of new friends and also learning a lot of new things. I visited many places such as Boston, Washington DC, and Nigara Falls. While I was there, I learned how to live alone without my family members taking care of me. I also learned about that country and the history. Moreover, I knew a lot of places and my favorite place was the 5th avenue, the six flag, and the Statue of Liberty. In the future, I am planning to study in the USA.

It has been a great memory in America. The most thing that I never forget is that I went to Six Flags and shopping. We have been to Boston, New York, New Jersey, and Washington. We do a lot of shopping at Macy’s Target and Time square. However, Six Flags is the place that I really enjoyed because I was riding a roller caster and other rides. The most beautiful thing is that I went to water fall and I have to stay in the car for 8 hours. At the water fall, it has a half American and half Canada Bridge that is called “Friendship Bridge”. I wish that I can stay longer. Name: Sungy Kong Class: 7-E

Last summer, I have a lot of experience in USA. I went there for two weeks. It was for summer school and field trip to New York, Washington D.C, Boston, and New Jersey. I stayed at the Hotel in New Jersey and the Hotel was surrounded by a forest. It looked fun at the swimming pool, but I did not get a chance to swim there. I went shopping on the fourth of July. There was a big sale in time square. Moreover, the most excited place for shopping was that the fifth avenue. It was so big that I was almost lost there with my friends. We all went to Macy and bought a lot of stuff because that was our last shopping there. We went to Six Flags, it was an amusement park that had a lot of extreme roller coaster and had much fun. It was my best memory ever.

The summer before my 12th grade, my friends and I took a trip to a completely new world. Being from a small country, I had never been exposed to the elements of a large city such as NYC. My trip there was like discovering an entirely new life that I had only heard stories of previously. Exhilarating feeling overcame me as I realized that I would soon be in one of the most amazing cities of the USA. On the first day of the trip, we went to the 5th Avenue which is one of the most popular and busiest streets in NYC. The buildings there were

an incredible sight: Each street was crammed with buildings that were built side by side with no room in between, and a number of skyscrapers were present throughout the city. The twin towers memorial was the most beautiful part of NYC. The quiet, sincere feeling brought us great peace. The water even had a calm way of falling down the sides of the square falls. The peaceful atmosphere of the museum reminded us of the tragedy that happened in the past where many people died because of building collapsing as a result of an attack.
